About the Hong Kong Open

Founded in 1959, The Hong Kong Open is one of the Asian Tour’s most iconic golf tournaments, Hong Kong’s oldest professional sporting event and is recognized as one of Asia’s premier professional golf tournaments. It has a history and heritage that no other tournament in Asia can match.

Staged at Hong Kong Golf Club since the tournament was established, it is the only golf tournament in the world, apart from the US Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, to stay at the same venue for 60 consecutive years.

The 2023 Hong Kong Open sees the event return after a three-year hiatus due to Covid and will be part of the International Series on the Asian Tour offering a prize purse of US$ 2 million. It will be a spectacular showcase of both international and local sporting talent, including local hero, Taichi Kho, as well as a host of major champions and stars of the game.

World City Championship Set for HKGC

asian tour golf hong kong

Hong Kong: The reopening of Hong Kong to international travellers will be celebrated with the staging of the World City Championship presented by Hong Kong Golf Club.

To be held over the tournament Composite Course at the Hong Kong Golf Club’s (HKGC) world-acclaimed Fanling venue from March 23-26, the event will act as the seventh leg of the 2023 Asian Tour and carry a prize pot of US$1 million.

It will be the first international golf tournament in the Special Administrative Region of China for 38 months.

It was in the second week of January 2020 that Australian Wade Ormsby triumphed in the Hong Kong Open. Within two months the spread of Covid-19 prompted the imposition of travel bans and the cessation of sporting gatherings.

However, with the widespread recent lifting of pandemic-related restrictions, Hong Kong is once more ready to showcase itself as ‘Asia’s World City’ and a hub for major sporting events.

Cho Minn Thant , Asian Tour Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’re all excited to be able to return to Hong Kong and the iconic Hong Kong Golf Club, one of the world’s most historic golfing establishments and a perennial favourite among Asian Tour members.”

Hong Kong Golf Club Captain Andy Kwok said: “Staging international events is very much part of the club’s fabric and history, so to welcome back world-class golfers and spectators to the fairways of Fanling after three long years is something we are all very excited about.

“Through the inaugural World City Championship, the club is putting Hong Kong firmly back on the international golfing map, whilst at the same time providing a platform for talented young Hong Kong players to showcase their skills in front of a global audience.

“We definitely believe that Hong Kong golfers have what it takes to compete at the highest level and their confidence and development will only grow from experiences such as this. The club has long been the training ground to nurture local golfing talent and we cannot wait to get the event underway.”

Founded in 1889, the HKGC inaugurated the Hong Kong Open in 1959 and has hosted every edition since. In addition, the club staged the inaugural Johnnie Walker Classic in 1990, won by then world number one Sir Nick Faldo , the Alfred Dunhill Masters, the Alfred Dunhill Cup Asia-Pacific qualifying and the Hong Kong Ladies Open.

The World Amateur Team Championships for the Eisenhower Trophy (men) and Espirito Santo Trophy (women) took place at the HKGC in 1984 while the Queen Sirikit Cup Asia-Pacific Ladies Invitational Team Championship has been held at the club on three occasions (1990, 2001 and 2015).

The World City Championship presented by Hong Kong Golf Club will take place the week before the Hong Kong Sevens – making it a great time for sports fans to visit Hong Kong.

The HKGC is a Facility Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.

Asian Tour returns to Hong Kong Golf Club

Golf in uae, golf in uae world.

$1 million World City Championship starts tomorrow, Dubai-based Kapur in the Field

sport

After a three-year sabbatical from tournament golf, tomorrow (Thursday) sees Hong Kong Golf Club host the $1 million World City Championship on the Asian Tour.

132 players are in the field consisting of 17 tournament invitations along with representation from the PGA Tour of Australasia, Hong Kong Golf Association as well as the Asian Tour and Asian Development Tour (ADT).

Headliners in the field include Henrik Stenson (Swe) and Ian Poulter (Eng) and a strong regional representation.

In addition to the prizefund, this week’s event offers players the chance to play themselves into the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in July. This is one of three Asian tournaments selected for The R&A’s Open Qualifying Series (OQS), with four spots available to this year’s final major, for those not already qualified.

'Feeling better'

Dubai-based Shiv Kapur (Ind) is in the field and told Gulf News, “I am feeling better this week, I was still struggling from my bout of illness last week. This is one of my favourite golf courses and the history and tradition here remains intact. It’s great to see a classic layout that has withstood the test of time and technology. In spite of being one of the shortest courses we play all year, the winning score rarely goes below 15 under par. It’s a great example of a course set up and green complexes that are still relevant with the modern ball and golf clubs - a big debate these days. The course this week is set up as a par 70 at 6,710 yards. I’ve been playing here for 20 years now and it still presents a great challenge and I’m feeling good entering this week and hoping this is the week that gets me going.”

Shiv tees off in his first round at 12.50 pm. Also in the field is fellow Dubai Golden VISA Awardee Jeev Milkha Singh (Ind) who tees off tomorrow at 12 noon.

The World City Championship can be watched live on Dubai Sports Channel (DSC 2) as follows (UAE times):

Thursday 23rd March: from 9.30 am.

Friday 24th March: from 9.30 am.

Saturday 25th March: from 8.00 am.

Sunday 26th March: from 8.00 am.

Through the first full month of the season, the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers have indeed shown they are two of the top World Series-title threats, with a chance to compare notes this weekend amid play that has not been up to either's standards.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights head into Friday night's Game 6 in Las Vegas against the Dallas Stars in their Western Conference first-round series needing a victory to keep alive their hopes of repeating as champs.

LIV Golf stars Talor Gooch and Cam Smith take aim at Hong Kong Open

asian tour golf hong kong

LIV Golf stars are set to take aim at the Asian Tour’s International Series event in Hong Kong, with India’s Anirban Lahiri, Australia’s Matt Jones, Spanish phenom Eugenio Chacarra and 2023 LIV Golf League Individual Champion hopeful Talor Gooch confirmed to compete in the Hong Kong Open from November 9-12 at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

They will join last year’s Open Championship winner and Gooch’s fellow LIV Individual Champion front-runner Cameron Smith, two-time Hong Kong Open victor Wade Ormsby, and local hero Taichi Kho — winner of March’s World City Championship.

The world’s top golfers are making the trip to Fanling drawn by the Hong Kong Open’s history, its new status as an event on The International Series — 10 elite-level tournaments sanctioned by the Asian Tour, providing a pathway to the LIV Golf League — and its purse of $2 million.

The 31-year-old Gooch is making his Hong Kong Open debut in record-breaking form, having won three times already this season on LIV Golf — in Adelaide, Singapore and Andalucía — becoming the first-ever player to achieve that feat on the fledgling global circuit.

“I am excited to be making my debut appearance at the Hong Kong Open in 2023. I have heard a lot about the city and the Hong Kong Golf Club from other players, and I look forward to playing in front of the knowledgeable galleries in Fanling,” said Gooch.

“Last year I didn’t get a win, so this year I was just so focused on getting an individual win. You don’t think much past the first one until you get it. I definitely didn’t have three in mind for the season, but it’s cool to be here.”

Cameron Smith. LIV Golf

Gooch and Smith are two of the three LIV Golf stars in contention, along with American Bryson DeChambeau, for the 2023 LIV Golf Individual Champion crown to be decided at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on October 13-15.

A top-10 finish for Gooch at the LIV Golf Chicago has him in contention for the individual title on 162 points in the individual standings, eight behind Smith’s leading 170.

Another confirmed star for the Hong Kong Open, Lahiri, performed even better in Chicago, finishing tied for second in what was his third top-10 finish this season.

The 36-year-old is no stranger to Fanling, with seven Asian Tour titles to his name, he has a best finish of tied for seventh at the Hong Kong Open back in 2015.

Lahiri will also be familiar with fellow headliner Smith, having finished as runner-up to the young Australian at The Players Championship in 2022.

Chacarra is ranked eighth in The International Series Order of Merit standings. The Spanish star turned pro in 2022 to join the LIV Golf League and struck gold on his fifth ever event winning the LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok.

His debut non-LIV Golf win came on The International Series at the Asian Tour’s inaugural St Andrew’s Bay Championships in August, when he defeated Matt Jones in a 10-hole playoff, the longest in Asian Tour history.

How many LIV Golfers are playing in the Hong Kong Open? Asian Tour event's field explored

Taichi Kho – Get to know the history-making Hong Kong golfer in action at Volvo China Open

Taichi Kho is living out his dream as a professional on the global stage. A little over a year after joining the paid ranks, he has already made history as the first Hong Kong golfer to play at The Open and now has his sights set on impressing on the DP World Tour.

Getting to know Hong Kong history-maker Taichi Kho

After a stellar amateur career in which he won on six occasions and finished runner-up to DP future DP World Tour winner Keita Nakajima at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Kho joined the paid ranks in January 2023.

He promptly made his professional debut at the Singapore Classic on the DP World Tour and while he missed the cut, it was just a month later when he celebrated success in the paid ranks as he etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Hong Kong golfer to win an Asian Tour title at the rain-shortened World City Championship.

With the victory he qualified for his Major Championship appearance in The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

In addition to his victory in Hong Kong, he recorded five other top tens on the Asian Tour last year and won the gold medal at the Asian Games in China.

Ahead of just his sixth start on the DP World Tour as a professional at this week's Volvo China Open , we speak to the 23-year-old invite as he looks to continue making his mark on the professional stage.

How excited are you ahead of this latest opportunity to play on the DP World Tour?

It is great to be out here, so I am super grateful and honoured to get an invite from the DP World Tour again. Anytime I have an opportunity out here I really cherish it and make the most out of it. In terms of this specific invite, I have a lot of good memories from this place (Hidden Grace Golf Club). We played here for the Volvo China Open not too long ago where I had a pretty good finish so hopefully, I get to expand on that and improve on that.

How have you found the transition over the last year or so since adjusting from successful amateur to professional?

Playing professional golf so far really is a dream come true. It is something that I have always wanted to do since I picked up the game. It is really great to be living out this dream, especially when I get to play out here. I see a lot of players who I grew up looking at so it is really cool for me to actually compete with them and learn with them. It has been a really great learning curve so far and I have played some great golf and not so good golf along the way but I am taking in everything in my stride. I can’t complain about anything.

What have you learned so far about yourself when testing yourself against some of the best?

Playing in The Open Championship was by far the best experience I have ever had in my career so far. I didn’t play great but in terms of all the things that I learned and being in that atmosphere it is something that I really want to go back to. It is very motivating for me to continue my journey and very motivating for me to get 1% better each day. Hopefully in a few years’ time I get to compete at that level week in week out. It is definitely something that I look forward to.

Having finished second in this event last year, what test are you expecting from this week’s venue?

I think this golf course is doing a great job at taking the hard weather recently. I went out for a practice round yesterday and the course is in great shape considering all the rain. I think the course will hold up to its true potential. It is a great test tee to green, it is very fair around the greens. There are some big undulating slopes but overall, I think it is a really fair test of golf and you will see some great golf out there.

Do you feel any sense of added expectation playing in front of friends or family at a venue you have performed well at?

I feel really comfortable being out here. I think just knowing the golf course well, having some friends and family from back home to support me out here… I feel like there is a lot of momentum on my side when I am out there so I definitely feel comfortable in my shoes out here and hopefully it translates to some good golf.

Strength in numbers for 12-member Hong Kong boy band Mirror

asian tour golf hong kong

SINGAPORE – As far as groups go, having 12 members is definitely pushing it.

But for Hong Kong boy band Mirror, their strength lies in numbers. When one member is tired, another can continue to sing. And no matter the project or occasion, someone will have the right talent for it, be it singing, rapping or dancing.

Mirror, who formed in 2018 through Hong Kong reality talent show Good Night Show – King Maker, are on a four-day trip to perform their first concert here in Singapore at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 1.

During their interview with The Straits Times on April 30, it soon becomes clear that despite their distinct talents and personalities, they are united in their enthusiasm in meeting their Singapore fans.

Their leader is Lokman Yeung, while the vice-leader is Anson Kong. The oldest is Frankie Chan, 35, while the youngest is Tiger Yau, 24.

The most eloquent are Edan Lui and Keung To, while the quietest are Frankie Chan and Jer Lau.

Lau and Ian Chan are the main singers, while Yeung, Jeremy Lee and Anson Lo are among the strongest dancers. Yeung, Alton Wong and Lo are the most proficient rappers, and Stanley Yau proclaims himself to be the best-looking.

Some members also have thriving solo careers. For example, Keung, Lau, Lo and Lui have performed solo concerts in Hong Kong, while Kong and Ian Chan are slated to do the same later in 2024.

Ian Chan shares that although Mirror are known for fast dance numbers such as Ignited (2020) and Warrior (2021), his personal style is quite different. “As a solo artiste, I perform mainly slower, more sentimental numbers, which I write myself.”

Some parts of their upcoming concert will allow the members to showcase their solo works. Lui adds: “It is fortunate that we have had the support from our company to develop as solo artistes. But if not for Mirror, we would not have the chance to do all these projects.”

Given the sheer number of members, there are bound to be differences in opinion. When these occur, the members have discussions among themselves, and their company MakerVille has the final say.

The best thing about being part of a dozen-strong act, says Lui, is that they feel less nervous performing, since they know their bandmates are alongside them.

And the worst? He adds: “We have to get up so early, and it takes forever to do anything.”

But being in Mirror has taught him to be a team player. “As solo artistes, we can have many of our own ideas. But in a group, we have to cooperate with one another. There is an element of sacrifice.”

Their Feel The Passion concert tour, which kicked off with 16 shows in Hong Kong, has made stops in cities such as London, Toronto and San Francisco.

For Ian Chan, Kong and Lau, it is their first time in Singapore. Kong says the weather is similar to that of Hong Kong – hot and humid.

During their time in the Lion City, some of them are keen on visiting the Merlion after finishing their interviews on April 30. Ian Chan says: “Not everyone is interested. Not everybody will fit in the car.”

Apart from wanting to try local dishes such as black pepper crab, bak kut teh and Hainanese chicken rice, they are also happy to rattle off Singlish phrases such as “swee lah” and “yandao”.

Keung once collaborated with Singaporean singer-songwriter Joel Tan – better known by his stage name Gentle Bones – and Hong Kong singer-songwriter Gareth.T on the song Bread And Better, which was released in January.

On choosing to perform in Singapore, Stanley Yau says he believes that Singaporeans are familiar with aspects of Hong Kong, such as its culture, language and music. Singaporeans have also flown to Hong Kong to attend some of Mirror’s concerts, adds Kong.

The group have been heartened by the warm welcome from fans who turned up at Changi Airport on the day of their arrival on April 29. A number of fans have been spotted at the hotel where they are staying.

Wong says: “To be honest, we cannot tell if these fans are from Singapore or Hong Kong. But no matter, we are happy to see them. And we are excited to see how our concert and stay in Singapore turn out.”
