bangkok trip from dubai

From its northern hill tribes and dense jungle to the perfect beaches down south and the buzz of Bangkok, there’s no place quite like Thailand.

  • Thailand is home to the world’s ninth tallest statue, The Great Buddha of Thailand, proudly watching over the Wat Muang Monastery in Ang Thong province.
  • Head to Chang Mai to escape the heat and the crowds as you trek through ancient rainforests.
  • No trip to Thailand would be complete without sampling the world-class food. Hot, spicy, fresh and delicious, you’ll find hawkers selling it on every street corner.
  • Not quite in their original spirit and somewhat over-run with tourists, there’s still no denying that the Full Moon parties on Ko Phangan are a sight to behold.

You can visit Thailand all year round, but the best time to travel is during the cooler, dry season – between November and early April. Essentially, there are three main seasons: rainy (May–October), cool (November–February) and hot (March–May). The climate can vary in different parts of the country however, with the north much cooler, especially in the jungle regions, while the western and southern isles get much hotter.

Thailand lies in the heart of southeast Asia’s tropical zone and the southern most border runs around seven degrees north of the equator, meaning it enjoys a warm, tropical climate all year round. Pack lightweight clothing and expect to cover up when visiting sacred temples or sites. If you’re visiting the north it might be wise to pack a lightweight jumper. May to October is rainy season so packing some waterproof items might be a wise decision.

Hot, loud, frenetic, exotic and with a population of around 11 million people – heady Bangkok is a feast for the senses. Thai hospitality is in a class of its own, and much of the five-star accommodation can be found along the Chao Phraya River, such as The Peninsula, Shangri-La, Anantara and Mandarin Oriental. Options are varied, such as the incredible Wat Pho and The Grand Palace, Thai boxing matches, traditional dancing shows, hip bars, night markets and the Chatuchak Weekend Market - a law unto itself, this place has an estimated 8,000 stalls selling a cornucopia of wares.

Cooler, calmer and less developed than other regions, northern Thailand offers jungles, mountains, hill tribes and a plethora of Buddhist temples. Chang Mai is part of the ‘Golden Triangle’ and is a place for calm recollection and relaxation. Bordering Laos and Myanmar, many visitors head to the mountains and forests of the Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, others opt for a guided tour to Mae Sa on a quest to discover ancient hill tribes. Some tours are better than others, with questions occasionally raised as to their authenticity. Further north, Chang Rai offers unspoiled mountain villages, waterfall-filled rainforests and peaceful wats. Visitors to this part of the country can also test their nerves rafting in Um Phang, party with the backpacker crowd in Pai or enjoy a traditional homestay in rural Sukhothai and find peace at Phrae’s Buddhist temple.

The southern islands

Thousands of islands line the Gulf Coast on the east side and Andaman Sea on the west, both offering paradise-perfect beaches, but the unrivalled beauty of the islands has of course been affected by mass tourism. Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and Ko Tao are a trio of islands on the Gulf Coast. Ko Samui still manages to retain a certain amount of charm in the less developed resorts. Ko Phangan has changed immeasurably over the years due to its reputation for full and half moon parties, while Ko Tao is the smallest of the three and better suited to couples and families as well as being a popular spot for diving. The Andaman coast side is dotted with dramatic limestone karst islands, jutting out of the ocean. Phuket and Krabi are the most popular stop-off points here. Phuket is predominantly a brash party destination, but also attracts a well-heeled crowd to its villas, boutique boltholes and luxurious hotels. Krabi has a much calmer air, and is a great place to explore before heading to Ko Phi Phi Lee and Ko Phi Phi Don, the two picture-postcard islands made famous by James Bond and Leonardo di Caprio, but now rammed with tourism. For those looking for a more authentic experience, Ko Lipe, Ko Ra Wi and Ko Adang hold a special allure and are still relatively unspoilt.

bangkok trip from dubai

Holidaying Bangkokians and package tourists head to this part of the country, lured by the islands and beaches, some just as beautiful as the southern isles, but bear in mind that much of the first part of the coastline to the east of Bangkok is heavily industrialised. Pattaya is Thailand’s number one package-tour destination but perhaps not the highest quality destination, however the ever-enduring Ko Samet is a calm, beautiful, palm-fringed island that has long been a hangout for diving enthusiasts. Head to Trat if you want to access the more mainstream Ko Chang, lesser-known Ko Kood, Ko Mak and Ko Ku or family-friendly Ko Wai.

Central plains

Many travellers simply pass through central Thailand, but this part of the country is well worth a look, given this is home to a great deal of the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Visit the grand former capital, Ayutthaya, to discover gleaming temples and palaces of former Thai rulers, harking back to a bygone era or Sukhothai, birthplace of the Thai kingdom in the 13th century. Nature is all around too, with the vast mountain ranges, caves and crevices of Thong Pha Phum National Park waiting to be explored, along with the allure of potentially seeing wild tigers - all within easy reach of the capital.

Thai cuisine is arguably among the best in the world. Spicy green and red Thai curries made with rich, creamy coconut milk feature on menus throughout the region, as does the shrimp-, tofu- and noodle-based, Pad Thai. Tom Yum Goong is a hot, spicy soup, laced with herbs including Thai basil, coriander and kaffir lime leaves. No trip to Thailand would be complete without a visit to the street hawkers, very common throughout Thailand. Bustling night markets and hawker carts offer such delicacies as deep-fried crickets, bamboo worms, ants and scorpions. Try them if you dare.

Thai culture is deeply influenced Buddhism and Hinduism. Many traditions stem from Buddhist principles and locals worship at temples known as wats - ornate, gleaming buildings that are a huge draw for visitors – of which there are more than 40,000 in the country. The wai is a prayer-like gesture made with the hands that includes a slight bow of the head while the famous Thai smile has lead to the country being dubbed, ‘the land of a thousand smiles’. Food, dance, music, arts and literature are all an important part of everyday life. Thai boxing is a native form of kickboxing and is Thailand’s signature sport.

From Thailand’s most famous resident and national animal, the elephant, to Macaque monkeys, gibbons, geckos, lizards, snakes, rhinos and crocodiles, the country is home to a colourful and varied range of animals. Thailand’s rainforests host many mammals and over 900 species of birds. There are said to be 365 species of coral reef fish in the Gulf of Thailand.

Many Thai people originally lived in southwestern China and migrated to Thailand over a number of years. Early settlers split into two main groups: one in the north became the kingdom of Lanna, the other settled south and became known as the kingdom of Sukhothai. Meaning the ‘Dawn of Happiness’, Sukhothai was the first independent Thai Kingdom founded in 1238, followed by the unified Thai kingdom (Ayutthaya) in the mid-14th century, and the country was known as Siam until 1939.

Given its river location, Bangkok has been of major importance since 1782. In more recent history, military leaders staged a bloodless coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006 and unrest continued to unsettle the country up until 2015. However, most of Thailand remains unaffected and it still holds its place as the 15th most visited country in the world. It is also the only southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power.

Khao Sok National Park

Whether you want to trek through lust rainforest – said to be the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world – go deep underground on a pitch-black cave tour, trail limestone mountains or stay on the beautiful Cheow Larn Lake in the heart of the park with its floating houses, this area has huge appeal. Located in Surat Thani in the south, it’s the place to head for a real jungle adventure.

The Great Buddha of Thailand

Thailand is home to the world’s ninth tallest statue – The Great Buddha of Thailand, also known as The Big Buddha – proudly guarding over the Wat Muang Monastery in Ang Thong province. The statue is 92m high and 63m wide and is painted gleaming gold, a true sight to behold.

Bangkok’s Grand Palace

A complex of beautifully ornate buildings in the heart of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, the Palace was once home of the King and his court and the entire administrative seat of government for around 150 years. Spanning an area of 218,400 sq. metres, you will find gilded chapels, inner, outer and middle courtyards, a throne hall and perfectly manicured gardens.

A trip to the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya – founded in 1350 and the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom – is a must-see if you’re interested in discovering Thailand’s real history and heritage. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can explore the ancient ruins and visit gilded temples and palaces that hint at Thailand’s fascinating past.

Mae Hong Son Loop

This desirable 600km roadtrip through Mae Hong Son Province lures travellers in search of authentic, sleepy Thailand. This is the most mountainous province in Thailand and receives few visitors due to its remote location and time needed to reach it – most people allow four days to complete the trip, which includes the highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon.

Kanchanaburi

A two-hour drive from Bangkok, this town is an adventure hub and also the ideal base to explore the notorious Bridge Over The River Kwai and Death Railway, constructed in World War II when Japanese forces used allied Prisoners of War and Asian armed forces to build a rail route to Myanmar. It is estimated that around 90,000 people died during its construction. Further north from here is the Khao Laem Reservoir with several sunken temples that can be discovered by boat or kayak.

The Khmers of neighbouring Cambodia left a chain of incredible ruins across the northeast, such as those seen in this unassuming little town. On a par with Angkor, the Phimai historical park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand, Prasat Phimai, which once stood on the Ancient Khmer ‘highway’ linking Angkor with the northern reaches of its realm.

9 things you should know before visiting Bangkok

I moved to Bangkok in 1999, a time when most visitors to Thailand reluctantly did a night in this megacity before beelining to an island or the north. Synonymous with traffic jams, pollution and urban sprawl, the Thai capital was largely seen as an unwanted but obligatory stopover.

Decades later, things have changed and Bangkok is now the destination of choice for many visitors – with good reason. Easier to get around and cleaner than ever, with a vibrant eating and drinking scene that caters to just about every budget and an enviable spread of intriguing sights and fantastic-value shopping, the city has more to offer than ever before.

Yet like any big city, Bangkok has its quirks and surprises. Here's what you need to know before you go.

Find out what you should know in advance about Thailand , including important cultural, religious and legal issues, etiquette and health.

Bangkok is easier to get around than ever

Bangkok used to be synonymous with traffic jams and air pollution. The jams still happen, but the good news is that the city’s public transportation system has grown immensely. The various above and underground rail networks currently unite 10 different lines – with more in the works – and 192 stations, including trains linking both of Bangkok’s international airports and the city center.

On top of this, taxis remain ubiquitous and cheap – though subject to the issues that make the city’s traffic so infamous – while quirky public transportation systems such as the city’s river and canal taxis provide a slow but steady (and scenic) way to get around.

Crime happens but it's rare

Thailand has a low crime rate and is generally considered a safe country. Bangkok suffers from the same type of violent crimes as any big city, but anecdotally, is considered a safe place. Apart from occasional bag snatching and theft, the most dangerous thing in the city is its traffic (Thailand’s roads are some of the deadliest of any country). Solo women travelers and locals I’ve spoken to also report feeling safe in the city.

A particular Bangkok annoyance is scams directed at tourists. These typically involve taxi drivers who refuse to use their meters, or tuk-tuk drivers and/or well-dressed, English-speaking men who appear out of nowhere offering free tours that inevitably lead to dodgy gem shops or tailors. The good news is that most of these situations are easy to spot and relatively low-pressure; if something seems off, simply walk away.

It’s also worth noting that Bangkok’s police don’t have a great reputation. Steer clear of them unless you really need help.

Street food isn’t the only good food

Western chefs and food media have been raving about Bangkok’s street food for more than a decade. And it’s a fun, often delicious way to eat. But if you relegated yourself to street food alone, you’d miss the entire scope of Bangkok’s cuisine.

Supplement those streetside noodles with meals at the charming, decades-old restaurants in the old town – these are the places that get the most praise in the Thai-language media. In Bangkok’s newer districts, such as along Thanon Sukhumvit, consider a Japanese meal – the city is home to one of the largest populations of Japanese people outside of Japan.

If your budget allows, consider a splurge restaurant. While the rest of the world was obsessing over its street food, Bangkok's dining scene went in the opposite direction and today is home to several modern, cutting-edge upscale restaurants.

Sometimes it's too hot to handle

Bangkok is one of the hottest capital cities in the world, with an average mean temperature of 29°C (84°F). This heat is compounded by intense humidity and the urban environment, which reflects and retains heat, meaning the city often feels much, much ( much ) hotter. April is Bangkok's hottest month, with an average daily max temperature of 35°C (96 ° F) and during the “winter” in December and January, temperatures rarely dip below 20°C (68°F).

All of this means you shouldn't try to cover too much ground on foot – an already difficult task given the city’s lack of pedestrian infrastructure. If you do walk, learn the technique of regularly ducking into air-conditioned malls, hotel lobbies and 7-Elevens to cool off.

Likewise, pack light clothing, but remember – Thais are conservative when it concerns showing skin in public and Bangkok is not the beach.

Bangkok is a queer-friendly city

LGBTIQ+ people are made to feel welcome in Bangkok, which is generally considered Asia’s most queer-friendly city. The epicenter of the gay scene is Thanon Silom, especially in and around Soi 4, which is ostensibly Asia’s biggest queer nightlife area.

Thankfully, it looks like this queer-friendly vibe will extend to legislation. In 2023, the Thai parliament passed draft bills on same-sex marriage, which are expected to become laws, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to allow same-sex marriage.

Keep in mind that public displays of affection between people of any gender are frowned upon in Thailand.

There are better budget options than Khao San Road

If you want to be based in the world’s most famous backpacker strip – and all that that entails – book a bed or room on Thanon Khao San, generally known as Khao San Road. It’s lively and fun, and provides easy access to the city’s old town.

But having moved slightly upscale in recent decades, Khao San Road no longer represents the best value area to stay in Bangkok. And with loud bars and a boozy vibe, it’s definitely not the most peaceful place to stay.

If you want to have access to the backpacker amenities but don’t want the noise and hassle, consider staying in the streets nearby, such as Thanon Rambutri or Thanon Phra Athit.

Monsoon season brings sudden surprises

During the annual monsoon, from approximately May to October, Bangkok’s streets occasionally turn into rivers. During this time of year, don’t be surprised if you have to camp out on an elevated street corner or in a 7-Eleven until the waters recede.

Malls are part of city life

While shopping malls are a dying breed in much of the west, they’re thriving in Bangkok. The city is home to some of the most over-the-top shopping centers in the world, which in contemporary Bangkok, have a dual function as (conveniently air-conditioned) social centers. Thais gather at the city’s more than 500 shopping centers to chat, eat, take selfies and occasionally make purchases, and so should you.

Tourists spray water guns out of a tuk tuk on Khaosan Road during the Songkran festival

Bangkok essentially shuts down during the Thai New Year

Every year around April, Bangkok grinds to a halt during Thai New Year, known as Songkran or the water festival. The tradition has its origins in the cleansing role of water, but these days it essentially means that Bangkok becomes ground zero to a multi-day, raucous water battle.

Whether you're into it or not, you’ll be splashed with water and/or smeared with baby powder. Don’t even attempt stepping outside your door with your Sunday best on and don’t expect your favorite restaurant, or that museum or monument to be open (shopping centers, inevitably, will be operating). Discover more about Bangkok's festivals and seasonal attractions in our guide to the best time to visit the city .

Weed isn’t exactly legal in Bangkok

In June 2022, marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still many restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not legal and is not recommended.

Yes, there's a sex industry, but it's easy to avoid

“One Night in Bangkok” is indeed a reality. But if you steer clear of the main red-light zones at night – namely Thanon Patpong, Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy – it's likely you won’t even witness this side of the city.

I liked everything accept the delay try to improve in that area

Same problem with very poor food. Gluten free options can taste great, there is not reason to be give suboptimal meals in this situation.

Flights were both delayed. No luggage on arrival for the whole plane and no contact since submitting a PIR.

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

Nice selection of movies and TV shows. Plane was generally nice, not the newest but nice nonetheless. However, Emirates should have cancelled the flight, as hardly any flights flew out of Dubai at the time. Flight delays and cancellation was poorly communicated and passengers were left guessing and to their own devices on what to do. Connection desks were staffed too thinly, there was one desk with more than a hundred clients and just one poor lady. When I had my flights rebooked, I was told meal vouchers can be scanned using my boarding pass, nope. Was told to comeback for my hotel voucher, none. Had to book my hotel voucher the usual way through Dubai Connect despite having been told twice to comeback to the counters twice.

On the Dubai-Gatwick flight the only meal options were Beef or Chicken. No vegetarian option. This was a surprise. I would usually order in advance but did not this time. Would have been good to know that a vegetarian meal is not available as a standard meal. Thankfully it was just me travelling, but if I’d had my kids with me that would have been a big problem for us.

My Experience was ok. But the gentleman next to me vaped the whole flight and the attendants did nothing, whether they were aware, I’m not sure.

Flight from Dubai to Zagreb very bad cabin crew. Bad food

Checkin and boarding staff at Delhi Airport is not cooperative with passengers Their behavior very humiliating . They don’t allow Lap top bag and Ladies’ purse/vanity bag which most of the airlines allow besides cabin baggage and check in baggages. They try to charge extra payment on the pretext of small variations which normally other Airlines staff don’t do. Airline staff should be courteous & cooperative but check in staff of Emirates Airline at Delhi was not so at all.

Absolutely terrible delays for 3 hours changed seats after we paid an upgrade on both legs. It appears it’s up to us to request a refund after they down graded our seat. Never again !!

The flight was slightly delayed because of change of plane but informed beforehand. Flight was very good and comfortable

Superb like always. On time and quite comfortable. Only thing is that the arrival movement was by bus.

We were boarded by bus. That was a bit of pain.

Food could have been better Entertainment was absent even in Business Class

I like it very much. Gulf Air is always the topper rank of the world. I love it very much.

The drinks should come before food. Unable to have any fluid unless after food. Thanks

Gulfair were on top form and everything went as planned

The entertainment on board was really poor. The map doesn’t give enough information and the movies have arabic subtitles, you can’t choose. The stuff wasn’t very friendly and the breakfast really poor. The food must not be spicy! They didn’t have enough drinks.

Aereo nuovissimo e con tanti servizi malgrado la durata del volo Spazio per le gambe ridottk

It was a great experience, can’t wait to do it again soon!!

Aircraft was new and comfertable .on time. Cabin crews, which I got english language pronounce was very difficult to understand .ovee all ok flight

The boarding at Heathrow is chaotic. That's partly due to the lack of space and seating at gate 8, and a Qatar flight from gate 9 at the same time. That's down to Heathrow rather than Gulf Air. I've had a similar experience here before. Another problem which isn't specific to Gulf Air or Heathrow is announcements, and those for boarding in particular. They are difficult to hear with all the other noise and for me with hearing problems it's even worse. A simple tv screen would help, so long as it's updated of course.

This itineray had to be cancelled as the connection time in Paris was only 55 min which is below the 90 min required by Paris airport. Nether Chat deal/Kayak, nor Gulf air nor American Air picked on that. I called American Air for unrelated question was then told that boarding would be denied due to the short connection time. This should have been an automatic notification from Chat deal/ Kayak or Gulf air and itinery cancelled. What is the point of inconveniencing the passenger?? The return has still not be refunded. Shame on Gulf Air, very poor customer service for an airline that has so good flight crew!

This booking was as a result of stolen identity and hacking my debit account. I reported it to my bank. The thief tried to book two flights, maybe more. Hopefully, Kayak will be able to block fraudulent bookings and charges better in the future.

Very friendly and efficient staff. Would definitely fly Saudia again.

Entertainment on all 4 business class seats were terrible audio and could barley hear. The 11 hour layover in Riyadh was a nightmare and no one told us that nightmare matter what we do or what we were willing to pay there were no places to rest or sleep and nine of the lounges allow you to enter them no matter what unless you are 4 hours or less from flight time. With a 78 yearold mother with me this is ridiculous. The employees of the airline in Riyadh and of the lounge treated us like servants or lower class people. Never again

I wonder why checking carry on bags while the checking process was done by Moroccan security. Is it question of trust or Morocco security system is not qualified enough?

Food could be better. Bread should be warm served with butter. Bread quality is bad and cold served.

The seats’ reclined like premium economy seats, ie, not much.. but leg space was a lot l, so it did not feel cramped. Crew was very friendly and helpful.

Route from DC was ok nothing special or bad From Jeddah to cairo horrible First flight got delayed by 3 hours no explanation so what ever Arrived in cairo to find lock on my bag Saudia crew in cairo didn’t know who did could not open had to break my bag zipper to open my luggage

Good variety could have been better; crew not as friendly

Flight was delayed, but there was no explanation why. Seats were comfortable and service was good. Food was good and there were more snacks than I expected.

The best way to fly is saudia airlines flight Every thing is better (Number one 🫶) Thank you

Indigo attempts to make you pay for a seat during check in. I opted to not do this. The result - they allotted me and my minor son seats apart. In the interest of making maximum money, they seem to have lost common sense too. Similarly, even during the flight, the crew are busy trying to serve food to those who’ve already paid for it. By the time they’re done, it’s time to land and no one else is able to get anything. Sadly this seems to be what makes them profitable, customers just need to bear with it till a better airline comes along.

As usual invariably delayed Lots of time in getting chkd in baggage

Flight was delayed and also lots of mosquitoes on the flight

Two times the gate was changed and flight got delayed

INDIGO Never On Time & Always Prefer to Shuttle Passengers Like shuttle Corks

I did not like the communication gap existing amongst the staff and the customer. My flight to Nagpur was delayed by two and half hours but it was informed to me on email ( not by W.A. or SMS) when I have already left my home in Baner area. I was painfully detained at airport with luggage when the gate no. 10 was changed to 5. I'll never recommend your flight to anybody.

Wife and I were seated in separate seats across the aisle

There was inordinate delay without any plausible reason. This has become a normal feature of Indigo now a days.

Flight was inordinately delayed, which has become normal with Indigo. Crews were inattentive. After landing there was a lot of time for arrival of chek in baggage

The entire experience leave an impression that there are scopes for improvements in all spheres. Seems the airline has expanded beyond their capacity to manage.
