It's unlikely you'll feel the need for snow coats, or hefty boots, but it will undoubtedly serve you to pack a wind jacket and a pair of gloves or two. Something broadly used in Japan is the so-called Heat-Tech shirts. These are clothes that are very warm but also very thin, making packing and traveling that much easier. They may or may not be available in your country, but if you want some, you'll find them virtually everywhere in Japanese clothing stores and department stores . 2. Visiting northern Japan? Bring heavier clothes. You may opt, though, to go enjoy one of the most beautiful winters once you can experience. In that case, you'll visit the northern regions of Japan. Your suitcase will definitely need to fit some more stuff. Make sure to pack your regular clothes, but also heavy snow clothing, as well as snow boots, and possibly leg warmers. Heavier socks and shirts are practically mandatory. 1. Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

For those of you who enjoy spending time in beautiful snowy landscapes and sights, it will be hard to pass on these areas. These regions, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1995, are famous especially for their farmhouses, some of which are centuries old. In Shirakawa, you can visit many villages (the most popular of which is Ogimachi) in a peaceful and quiet setting. What's more, you can truly get the best out of your stay by lodging in one of the many minshuku , traditional, family-run, Japanese-style bed and breakfasts. If you're feeling more adventurous and want to see some of the county's most uncontaminated locations, take a trip to Gokayama. Its many villages are virtually untouched by large modern buildings and offer a truly unique experience.

2. Hokkaido - Sapporo

The Hokkaido region and its main city of Sapporo , are arguably the most famous and popular when it comes to all that is winter . If you enjoy winter sports , look no further. You'll find a large selection in Hokkaido regardless of your level of expertise, preference on location, or budget. But with ski resorts, we are only scratching the surface of what Hokkaido has to offer in February.

The Sapporo Yuki Matsuri ( Sapporo Snow Festival) takes place in February every year, over seven days. It's the largest winter festival in Japan, and one of the most attended ones among all Japanese festivals. In 2024, the festival will be held from February 4–11. During the festival, the vast Odori Park is the stage of tens of snow and ice sculptures, some of which are so massive in size that they resemble actual buildings. The best time to enjoy the sculptures is in the evening when beautiful lights complement them. The festival also sets up areas for bob sliding and other snow activities. All of this is accompanied by a plethora of fantastic street food and drinks.

The city of Asahikawa in Hokkaido also holds a winter festival (second only to the one in Sapporo ) with sculptures, food, and activities. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the city is in the truest north of Japan, and a lot of the attractions are set in beautiful plains overlooked by gorgeous mountains . This is part of the daily routine of the penguins homed at the Asahikawa Zoo , and it's one of the cutest spectacles you'll ever see.

3. Hokkaido - Otaru

Another festival held in February is the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival. In 2024, it will be held February 10-17. Also in Hokkaido, the city of Otaru is famous for this festival that lights up the streets with 120,000 candles glowing in the snow, creating a fable-like atmosphere. The people of Otaru often like to remind visitors that the festival aims at helping people leave their troubles behind and truly enjoy the moment, and unity with nature .

4. Lunar New Year

Let’s not forget, depending on the way the lunar calendar works out, that Lunar New Year is also often held in February! The occasion is celebrated in huge festivities in Japan’s major Chinatown areas in Yokohama and Kobe .

There are a number of other festivals across Japan in February. Sapporo and Northern Japan: Winter Sports

It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

February is the end of winter in Japan following the previous coldest month. It is a slower season with less foreign tourists compared to January when more travelers visit the country using their New Year’s holidays. You may see snow in February and there are snow festivals held in colder regions such as Hokkaido and Tohoku Region. In addition, you can experience a traditional Japanese event Setsubun and the globally famous Valentine’s Day. Some people take a trip to the country for plum blossoms or early-blooming cherry blossoms and Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. The average daily temperature in February in Tokyo is 5-9°C (41-48.2°F). It is recommended to simulate the colder conditions than that just in case, especially if you visit mountain areas or northern regions.

Yokote Kamakura Festival (横手かまくら祭り) is the biggest Kamakura festival in Japan, held annually in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture. 9. Setsubun

Setsubun (節分) is one of the most traditional events on the day before the beginning of Spring in Japan (usually 3 February). 10 ideas to make the most of a February visit to Japan

There are dozens of things to do in Japan in February. It is a cold month, but if you wrap up well, you can enjoy activities and witness celebrations limited to February or the winter months only. There are also two public holidays during the month of February. National Foundation Day is on February 11th and the Emperor's birthday is February 23rd. You will be able to enjoy events to mark both occasions. Here are 10 more ideas for a memorable February visit to Japan.

Celebrate Setsubun

This is something that can be done in every city, town and village around Japan. Setsubun is celebrated on February 3rd annually. People celebrate at home but also at shrines and temples that have a 'mamemaki' bean throwing ceremony . Although, some shrines and temples celebrate it on a different date, the vast majority celebrate it on the 3rd. However, apart from beans they also throw such things as amulets, candy and even money. Anybody can participate and generally, these events are free of charge. Update January 2021 : as Setsubun falls during the State of Emergency this year, the vast majority of bean throwing events have been cancelled.

Pick strawberries

Strawberry picking can start as early as mid December in Japan, but its generally not until mid January that all strawberry picking farms are open. By February, the season is in full swing. Strawberry greenhouses usually have 30 minutes of all-you-can-eat picking. If you want to bring strawberries back to your lodging, you have to pay an additional charge. You can find strawberry picking farms in every prefecture in Japan.

Ice skating can be enjoyed in Japan all-year-round in indoor skating rinks. However, during the winter months you will also find several outdoor ice rinks . Many of these are at outdoor summer pools that convert the pools into ice. Others are specifically erected at shopping centers. You can also find a few natural ice rinks in the rural areas of Japan. If you are on the mainland of Japan in February, you are bound to be within commutable distance of an outdoor seasonal ice-rink.

Try some snow sports

There are dozens of prefectures that have snow resorts . Even prefectures where snow doesn't fall often have an indoor ski resort. You don't have to stay overnight as most places offer day skiing. There are even some really convenient ski slopes that are close to either a train station or a highway interchange. You don't have to have any experience and the vast majority have classes for beginners.

Take in the illumination

A lot of winter illumination finishes in December. However, the larger night illumination displays generally run until mid-March. Illumination at malls and leisure complexes usually run until Valentine's day. Moreover, there are some places with natural winter scenery such as icicles that are lit up in January and February only.

View winter scenery

Only in winter can you see ice walls, icicles, snow statues and other snow or ice created scenery. It is also the only time you can enjoy snow festivals. There is still plenty of snow in February in the regions that enjoy snow fall annually. Furthermore, prefectures that don't have snow offer some innovative ways to enjoy scenery in the winter months. For example, the kotatsu boat rides are typically only available in January and February.

There is a misconception that hanami is only done in March and under Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms. But in fact, hanami can be done anytime of the year under any tree. Hanami literally just means "flower viewing". In Japan, people start to hanami in February under the plum blossoms and early blooming cherry blossoms. Kawazu cherry blossoms (as in featured photo) are a particularly famous early blooming cherry tree. They bloom from mid February to mid March .

Admire the Hina Dolls

The Dolls Festival 'Hina Matsuri' is on March 3rd annually. However, the dolls get displayed from February. Some places put up their dolls earlier than others, but by the second half of February, it is easy to find Hina Dolls on display in almost every town and city in Japan. In Saitama Prefecture, just North of Tokyo, you can see Japan's largest pyramid doll display .

Indulge in a hot spring

Of course, this can be done all year round, but what better time to take a hot bath than in the cold months of winter! There are hot springs all around Japan. You may even be lucky enough to have one in your hotel or ryokan. If you are in snow country, I highly recommend you brave a 'rotemburo' outdoor bath. There is nothing quite like viewing snow from an outdoor hot steaming bath.

One of the highlights of the seasonal foods available in February is the "dessert buffet". Combining Valentine's day celebrations and the abundance of ripe strawberries, restaurants and hotels around the country put on a dessert buffet in February. You can also pick up seasonal treats for setsubun and the dolls festival at any supermarket.

If you’re not big on sports, February is the season for joyous festivals, relaxing in a natural hot spring, and even cherry blossoms! Here are our top picks for things to do in February.

WINTER FESTIVALS IN JAPAN: SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL

Sapporo holds this festival every year in February, and it’s an occasion you must experience at least once in your life! International artists, local students, and even members of the Self Defense Force from the nearby Makomanai base all participate in building giant snow and ice sculptures. The main part of the Sapporo Snow Festival takes place just a few blocks from Sapporo station in the Odori Site . Snow statues taller than buildings dominate the city blocks from the Sapporo TV Tower to the local courthouse where the international snow sculpture contest takes place. In between, massive ice sculptures double as stages that host traditional dance performances and J-pop idol concerts. Along the way, don’t pass up hot Sapporo beer, warm Otaru wine, or some of Hokkaido’s giant scallops straight from the shell. In nearby Susukino Site — the entertainment district—smaller ice sculptures lit by flashing neon above line the streets. WINTER FESTIVALS IN JAPAN: OTARU SNOW LIGHT PATH FESTIVAL

At the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival, the neighboring town Otaru holds the Snow Light Path. Volunteers sculpt thousands of snow lanterns around the small port city and light the lanterns with candles between 17:00 and 21:00. Otaru is a town frozen in time, retaining its 1950s charm and most of its architecture. During the festival, hundreds of these lanterns line the road along the Otaru Canal , and candles float on the canal itself, giving this nostalgic town an elegant effervescent glow. The snow lanterns stretch for about a kilometer on the decommissioned tracks of the Temiya railway lines, and the path includes serene sights like a snow tunnel adorned with candles. The atmosphere of the tranquil Otaru Snow Light Path significantly differs from both the lively Sapporo Snow Festival and Asahikawa Winter Festival. WINTER FESTIVALS IN JAPAN: ASAHIKAWA WINTER FESTIVAL

The Asahikawa Winter Festival also runs around the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival. In 1994, a giant sculpture of Suwon Castle —a Korean fortress—made it into the Guinness World Records as the most massive structure made from snow. The Asahikawa Winter Festival is more family-friendly compared to the Sapporo Snow Festival, but more exhilarating than the Otaru Light Path. Every year, children participate in the giant snowball tournament, and they’re encouraged to help decorate the town with snowmen. There’s also a snow maze, a 100-meter ice slide, and small amusement park-like rides for children. At night, the ice and snow sculptures come alive with projection mapping and music! WAKASAGI SMELT FISHING

If you love sports but skiing, snowboarding, and ice climbing aren’t for you, you might try ice fishing! Wakasagi smelt (a tiny fish similar to delta smelt) fishing is a favorite Hokkaido pastime. There are many lakes in Hokkaido where you can try ice fishing, but Lake Akan is one of the best places to try it. Lake Akan has multiple tents set up around several holes, and you’ll find all the equipment you’ll need to catch your fish inside, along with a heater to keep you warm! After you’ve had enough fishing, you can head over to a separate area and have your fish cooked on the spot. Wakasagi smelt is usually eaten grilled or battered and fried like tempura . KAWAZU CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Japan’s winter won’t get in the way of you seeing iconic cherry blossoms ! Although most species of Japanese sakura begin to bloom sometime in April, the kawazu zakura variety’s season begins around mid-February. The Kawazu Cherry Blossom festival is held annually along the Kawazu River as the sakura hit their peak bloom. During the festival, you can shop for souvenirs or sample a variety of fresh local treats from one of the many food stalls along the bank. Generally, the best time to see them is during the last two weeks of February, but the exact dates can change each year due to weather conditions. Interestingly, since the kawazu zakura variety’s season is longer than most sakura types, the flowers tend to bloom at a much slower pace. Japan is a country with a magnificent blend of traditional and ultramodern culture on display everywhere you go. Cities around Japan are full of historical and cultural sights surrounded by wonderful nature too. Here is our list of the best cities in Japan, in no particular order, excluding Tokyo . Hopefully it will inspire your next travel plans in Japan.

The capital of Japan’s northernmost prefecture, Sapporo is a metropolis in the midst of nature. With snowy weather in winter and cool summers, it’s a great place to visit throughout the year. Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972 , so you can find high-class snow slopes. One of the biggest festivals of the year, the  Sapporo Snow Festival shouldn’t be missed either. Sapporo is a great place for a night out with good beer and fresh seafood.

Around 30 minutes away from Sapporo, Otaru is a small, historical, canal city nicknamed the “Venice of Japan.” When Hokkaido was colonized in the late 1800s, Otaru was a big trading and fishing port. It subsequently became the terminal for Hokkaido’s first railway between Otaru and Sapporo. Otaru is a lovely spot for a nice stroll and coffee.

Full of samurai history, Sendai is a city surrounded by both the sea and mountains. It was founded by feudal lord Date Masamune. Nicknamed the “City of Trees,” Sendai is a green metropolis with lots of activities to do throughout the four seasons. This includes cycling, SUP, walking around the Rinnoji Temple and enjoying the autumn foliage. Two hours northeast of Sendai is the famed Tashirojima Island, also known as Cat Island, which is inhabited by more than 100 cats.

4. Yokohama

One of Japan’s major port cities that was opened to the world in 1859, Yokohama is a diverse place bustling with different cultures. It boasts one of the world’s most famous Chinatowns, featuring old architecture and fancy hotels. Snack your way through various Chinese cuisines and have your palms read and your fortune told by fortune tellers. Check out the preserved Western architecture with local fashion boutiques and Japanese gardens in the Yamate district. The most popular spot, though, is the futuristic waterfront Minatomirai. The Cup Noodles Museum and Shin Yokohama Ramen Museum are also worth visiting.

5. Kawasaki

Conveniently located between Tokyo and Yokohama, Kawasaki features museums dedicated to artists Taro Okamoto and Fujiko F Fujio, the creator of Doraemon . Other popular sites include Kawasaki Daishi Heikenji Temple, the headquarters of the Chisan sect of Shingon Buddhism, and the Nihon Minkaen, also known as the Japan Open-air Folk Museum, which holds various exhibitions and traditional indigo dying workshops. Throughout the spring and autumn time, take a stroll in the rose garden Ikuta Greenspace, where you can gaze at a rainbow of different colored roses. Volunteer citizens tend the flowers and the managing facilities.

6. Kamakura

Once the capital during the Kamakura Shogunate era, Kamakura is a cultural coastal city in Kanagawa Prefecture. This ancient city is surrounded by three mountains and the ocean and is considered a popular summer spot to escape from the Tokyo heat. Kamakura is dotted with various spiritual sites, such as the Great Buddha of Kamakura, Hasedera Temple, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and Meigetsuin, known for its gorgeous hydrangea which bloom during rainy season. Foodies should grab a rice bowl of fresh shirasu, or small, young, white sardines, a local specialty. Another good option in the summer is to enjoy a local beer at an  umi-no-ie , drinking and eating establishments located on the city’s beaches.

Nicknamed “Little Edo”, Kawagoe is only 30 minutes away from central Tokyo. Its main shopping street, Ichibangai, is lined up with clay-walled warehouse-styled buildings, displaying its history as a supplier of commodities to Tokyo, then known as Edo. Check out Kawagoe’s historical remnants, such as the Toki no Kane (wooden bell tower), Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, Kitain Temple, Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace and much more. Visitors should try unagi, or broiled eel, a classic delicacy in Kawagoe. Take a stroll to the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine where you can purchase a special tai omikuji, that is a wooden carved red snapper fortune.

Toshogu, a luxuriously decorated shrine and mausoleum for Ieyasu Tokugawa, is one of the gems of  Nikko . Even before that, this area well known for being the core of Shinto and Buddhist Mountain worship for many centuries. Nikko National Park offers gorgeous mountainscapes, lakes, waterfalls, wild monkeys, hot springs and great hiking trails. Lake Chuzenji is a beautiful place to see autumn foliage. The colors start blossoming from the peaks of Yumoto Onsen and start descending in early October. The autumn leaves bloom in color around Lake Chuzenji in late October.

The fourth largest city in Japan, Nagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and one of Honshu’s main industrial centers. It is home to Toyota’s main manufacturing factory and also boasts the Toyota Kaikan Museum where car nerds can geek out. In the summer, Nagoya hosts the World Cosplay Summit where anime, games, manga and pop culture explode. World famous cosplayers fly to Nagoya for an annual cosplay contest. The first castle in Japan to be named a National Treasure, Nagoya Castle is one of the largest in the country. Check out the world’s biggest planetarium in Nagoya City Science Museum, which is full of lots of fun and interactive exhibitions. The adventurous foodies can try a wide array of Nagoya dishes from misokatsu, hitsumabushi and so much more.

10. Kanazawa

Easily accessible from Osaka and Kyoto, Kanazawa is one of Japan’s most underrated urban metropolises. This city is full of arts and crafts, culture, nature, history and great food, especially seafood. Kanazawa specializes in gold leaf and ceramics, sushi and sake, modern art, architecture and Zen Buddhism. Visitors can find fine crafted memorabilia to take home from their travels. Check out the Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s top three gardens for gorgeous blossoms, small creeks, Japanese traditional tea houses and cottages. Take a stroll along Kanazawa’s preserved historic streets, including Higashi Chaya District, Nagamachi Samurai District and more.

Famously known for its beautifully preserved Edo Period streets, Takayama is a charming city, bustling with tradition. During the Edo Period, it was home to many artisans, merchants, carpenters and timber craftsmen, especially in Sannomachi. Local food specialties include Takayama ramen and Hida-beef. For the early birds, check out the two morning markets, one near the Miyagawa River and another in front of Takayama Jinya, where local fresh produce, jams, sweets and crafts are sold. Takayama also hosts one of Japan’s most beautiful festivals called the Takayama Festival.

The former capital of Japan, Kyoto has much to offer in its long, deep-rooted history and traditions. Surrounded by temples, shrines and bamboo forests, there is truly an air of tranquility in the city. Kyoto is only a relatively short Shinkansen ride from Tokyo, making it a perfect weekend getaway trip from the hustle and bustle of the capital. From historic buildings, Japanese sweets, pop culture, traditional arts and crafts, there is so much to do for both first time travellers and frequent travellers, it truly does not get old.

The second largest city in Japan after Tokyo, Osaka is more relaxed than the capital. Visitors who enjoy a night out can expect a friendly encounter with the locals, plus should try dishes such as okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Get your shop on at Shinsaibashi, a shopping street with a history of more than 300 years. There is also history to this metropolis, with the Osaka Castle and the Tower of the Sun, the symbol of Expo ‘70, to discover. The capital of the Hyogo Prefecture and famously known for its beef, there is more to Kobe than meets the eye. This port city was one of the first port cities to open to foreign trade in the 19th century. Check out the Rokko Mountain and the modern art exhibition at the top of the mountain. After the hike, wind down and relax in the Arima Onsen. Explore along the port bay where the famed Kobe Port Tower is located. Have a taste of the city’s famed cuisine, Kobe beef for dinner.

A city crawling with wild deer which bow to visitors who bow to them, Nara was Japan’s first permanent capital in 710. The capital moved to Nagaoka in 784 due to the increasing Buddhist influence in the city. Temples and shrines worth visiting are the Todaiji Temple, Horyuji Temple, Kasuga Taisha and so much more. For nature lovers, Isuien Garden is another park to check out other than the famed Nara park with wild deer.

The second largest city in Hyogo after Kobe, Himeji is most well known for its samurai history. One famed national treasure of Himeji is the beautifully preserved Himeji Castle. It is a national treasure and a UNESCO heritage site. While visiting the castle, check out the Kokoen Zen Garden located beside Himeji Castle. Himeji is home to various temples and shrines, including Shoshazan Engyoji Temple, famed for its appearance in The Last Samurai film. Sake lovers should sample the local sake tasting workshop at Kokoromi Standing Bar, as 95 percent of the sake is made in Hyogo.

17. Hiroshima

A city that was once devastated during World War II, Hiroshima is now known as a city of peace. Alongside its historic sites, including the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, Hiroshima has a lot to offer, such as the Hiroshima Castle, Miyajima Island, Mitaki Temple, Itsukushima Shrine and more. Food lovers should try the Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and visit the Wood Egg Okonomiyaki Museum.

18. Okayama

Castles, trains, gardens and fairy tales, Okayama is the city of all of these things. It’s where the famous Japanese fairy tale “Momotaro” (“Peach Boy”) took place. Most tourists visit Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden. Head to Naoshima, the island of art, to check out the famed pumpkin sculpture by Yayoi Kusama and other modern art pieces for a short trip from Okayama. Check out the fun Manekineko or Lucky Cat Museum where more than 700 lucky cats were collected from all over Japan. There’s also Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a merchant town where the canals were used to transport goods.

Matsue in Shimane Prefecture is nicknamed the “city of water” because of its location between Lake Shinji, Nakaumi Lagoon and the Sea of Japan. Check out the Matsue Castle, one of the last surviving original castles. Near Matsue is Izumo Taisha, one of the most ancient and important Shinto shrines in Japan, and the Adachi Museum of Art. Matsue hosts the beautiful drum parade called Do Gyoretsu and Horanenya, a traditional Japanese boat festival. The city has beautifully preserved Edo Period samurai streets.

20. Onomichi

Onomichi is a quaint little city located beside the Seto Inland Sea in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. This city is famously known for its various slopes and a cycling heaven for cyclists. The retro vibes and charming old streets are memorable with former akiya (empty house) craft shops and known to be shooting spots for famed films. Most of the city’s famous attractions are located along these slopes, including Temple Walk. Rent a bike and cycle along the Shimanami Kaido, the only connection from Honshu, Japan’s main island, to Shikoku.

21. Nagasaki

The capital of Nagasaki Prefecture, Nagasaki is a gorgeous little port city located on Kyushu Island known for its devastating past during World War II. Nagasaki is heavily influenced by the Netherlands as it opened to foreign trade in the 17th Century. It is no wonder that the city is filled with beautiful cathedrals and churches, as the Netherlands also brought religion to the city. 22. Kumamoto

The capital city of the prefecture, Kumamoto is known for its sleek castle. Due to its location near the active volcano, Mount Aso, Kumamoto is also nicknamed the “Land of Fire.” Take a stroll along the Suizenji Jojuen, a picturesque Japanese garden, designed as the map of an ancient road with 53 stations from Tokyo to Kyoto. It even has a miniature Mount Fuji. Check out one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, Yamaga Onsen Sakurayu. This onsen was built around 370 years ago for Tadatoshi Hosokawa, the lord of the Higo region, as a vacation home.

23. Fukuoka

Both modern and traditional, Fukuoka is an international city. It has a long cultural connection with China and Korea due to its close distance to the two countries. This port city was heavily influenced by the West due to foreign trade when Japan first opened itself to the world. Visitors should sample a bowl of Hakata ramen, which originates from the city. It also has various breathtaking naturescapes and historic sites, including Fukuoka Castle.

Famously known for its hot springs, Beppu is a city of comfort and relaxation. Visitors have a wide array of onsen to choose from; from hot water baths, mud baths, sand baths, steam baths even foots baths, called ashiyu in Japanese. Jigoku Onsen, or the Hells of Beppu, showcases seven different natural hot springs. Head to Beppu’s theme park called Kijima Kogen Park, where the waiting time for rides are up until a maximum of 30 minutes. Make sure to taste some of the hot spring water-cooked delicacies at at restaurants or shops in the city.

Located on the southern coastline of the main island of Okinawa, Naha was the commercial and political center of the former Ryuku Kingdom and is the capital of the Okinawa Prefecture. From Naha, visitors can easily access various Okinawa islands and beaches as well as historical sites, including Shuri Castle and more. February is a studious month for pupils and students as it ends the last quarter of the academic year. It is also the season for university entrance exams, the most prestigious of which remaining very difficult to pass. Yet, February is quite a cheerful month where people are inclining toward relaxation.

Tourism statistics

February happens to be the second least visited month by foreigners, after January . National tourism compensates for this loss: winter breakers are mostly Japanese or expatriates. Therefore, the occupancy rate at lodging is high for skiing resorts, such as Hakuba, close to Nagano; Yusawa in Niigata region; and Niseko and Furano in Hokkaido island.

Climate and weather

As the last full winter month, February shows cold weather with average temperatures between 0 and 5°C (32°F to 41°F), and below 0°C (32°F) in the mountainous regions facing the Sea of Japan, where snow is abundant. With February's cloudier sky than January, the sunshine's duration is lower, while the humidity starts to slowly increase.

Progressively, the transition to spring   🌸 can be felt, with warmer temperatures in the south of the archipelago and also the first blossoming trees in some regions of Honshu, mostly on the Pacific coast.

National public holidays

The second month of the year has only one unworked public holiday:

• February 11 -- Birthday of Japan’s Foundation Day
• February 23 -- Mount Fuji Day and The Emperor's Birthday (Naruhito): Tennô Tanjôbi 天皇誕生日 (starting in 2020)

Other big national festivals are celebrated outside working hours:

• February 3 -- Setsubun , a festival involving throwing beans to celebrate the arrival of Spring

Top things to do

Skiing and other sliding sports remain a must. The season is at its top, with a white, thick coat of snow for several weeks that will only start to melt down from the next month. Moreover, thermal spas offer a great and warm break for hikers. Several events span the month: snow and ice festivals are at their fullest in the countryside, while popular festivals are coming back to the cities. It is also an occasion to celebrate the plum trees blossoming season during the ume matsuri , from the south to the north of Japan.

A diverse range of clothing should be prepared. Warm sweaters, coats and waterproof clothes will protect visitors while they enjoy outdoor day trips. Also, hats and gloves are essential in case of wind, especially for children . The Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort  is home to these chilling ice monsters otherwise known as juhyo . These natural formations are actually evergreen trees that become enveloped with snow and make for a stunning winter sight. For the ice monsters to appear, specific climate conditions have to be met, meaning there’s only a limited number of places and times that you can see this natural phenomenon.

Shirakawa-go, Gifu

The immaculately preserved Japanese village of Shirakawa-go is a sight to behold during the winter. Also designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the village is made up of numerous gassho-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouses that have been converted into hotels, restaurants and museums. The houses are designed to withstand heavy snowfall and make for a whimsical sight when covered in fresh snow.

Kamakura Snow Hut Village, Nagano

This magical igloo village in Nagano is actually a restaurant , and opens every winter. Restaurant Kamakura Village is made up of 20 pop-up igloos nestled in the snowy Japanese Alps in the small town of Iiyama. Each igloo fits up to four people and you'll be treated to a noroshi nabe, a tasty local hot pot made with miso, pork and local veggies. The snowy restaurant will return this winter from January 20 to February 29 2024.

Yunishigawa Onsen, Tochigi

This magical winter wonderland can be found at the Yunishigawa Kamakura Festival in Tochigi prefecture. The snowy festival takes place annually from late January to early March and showcases hundreds of illuminated mini snow huts known as kamakura . You can stroll through the kamakura, which are set up around the Sawaguchi riverbed at Yunishigawa Onsen. This year the festival is scheduled to be held from January 26 to February 25 2024.

Jigokudani Monkey Park, Nagano

Head to this park to meet the Japanese macaques, better known as snow monkeys, who lounge around in its steamy hot spring waters. You’ll find this winter retreat inside Joshinetsu Kogen National Park in Nagano prefecture. The monkeys often bathe in the onsen year round, but if you’d like to catch them with snowy surrounds, head up to the park between January and February.

Nabana no Sato Illuminations, Mie

This festival may not be snow-related, but the light-up at Nabana no Sato is one of the best winter illuminations in Japan . This botanical garden on the small island of Nagashima in Mie prefecture turns into a brilliant display of winter lights, showcasing millions of sparking LEDs forming iridescent rivers, waterfalls and more. The illumination continues all the way through to May, so there’s plenty of time to stop by and see it.

Sapporo Snow Festival, Hokkaido

Every February, Sapporo turns into a winter fairytale land during its annual Snow Festival . The festival first started back in 1950, when students began building snow statues in Odori Park, and has since become a full-blown week-long event with extravagant ice sculptures taking over the park, the grounds of Tsudome community dome and the city’s Susukino district. For this winter, the festival returns from February 4 to 11 2024.

Otaru, Hokkaido

Hokkaido’s port city of Otaru hosts an annual snow festival every February, and it sure is a showstopper. Known as the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival , the city's streets are illuminated with hundreds of lights and snow statues. We particularly love the view of the floating lights along Otaru’s main canal, which runs near the trendy Warehouse District. Hoping to check it out? Kenrokuen, Ishikawa

Kenrokuen in Ishikawa prefecture is considered one of Japan’s three great gardens. The well-manicured space is a popular spot to visit year-round, but during the winter, it’s particularly special. When snow falls, a blanket of white covers the grounds and turns the landscape into a truly serene space. The garden is often lit up during winter evenings and sometimes mini concerts are even held at the on-site Uchihashi-tei teahouse.

Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata

Once a former silver mine, Ginzan Onsen has since been turned into one of the most picturesque onsen resort towns in all of Japan. As a reminder of the past, it’s name literally means ‘silver mountain hot spring’ and the area features numerous ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), which line the river that runs through the town. Ginzan Onsen really is a stunner in winter when fallen snow collects on the rooftops and streets. Best of all, the town centre is pedestrian-only, so you can meander through this picture-perfect spot at your own pace.

Misotsuchi Icicles, Saitama

Heading up to see the Misotsuchi Icicles in Chichibu makes for an ideal day trip from Tokyo. Best seen in January and February, this natural phenomenon is the result of spring water from the Arakawa River being frozen to the surface of rocks. The icicles are also worth a visit in the evening as they are lit up in different colours to add to the mystical atmosphere.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, Toyama

This spectacular route through the Japanese alps stretches from Toyama all the way to Nagano prefecture and offers some pretty impressive scenery. Most notable is the staggering snow corridor, where the buildup of snow can reach as high as 20 metres. Due to the danger of collapse, the snow corridor is only open from spring onwards, but you could fool anyone into thinking its winter with a few photos from this spot.

February is a month brimming with special events and unique experiences throughout Japan. From historic celebrations to modern festivities, an array of events offers a deep dive into the country’s rich culture and lively community spirit. Let’s explore some special events you can look forward to in Japan in February 2024.

Setsubun, the day before the beginning of spring in Japan, usually falls in early February. It’s celebrated with a mamemaki ritual, where people throw roasted soybeans inside and outside their homes while shouting, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (Demons are out! Luck is in!). Many temples and shrines host Setsubun festivals, where celebrities and sumo wrestlers often participate in mamemaki. It’s a unique cultural experience filled with joy, laughter, and perhaps a few flying beans!

One of February’s most unusual and famous festivals is the Hadaka Matsuri, or Naked Festival, held at Saidaiji Temple in Okayama. Participants, mostly men wearing only a loincloth, battle in the cold to grab a pair of lucky sacred sticks thrown by the priest. It’s a wild, energetic event that’s said to bring a year of good luck to the one who secures the sticks. Witnessing or participating in this centuries-old tradition is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that embodies the spirit of endurance and fortune.

Though mentioned earlier, it’s worth reiterating the significance of the Sapporo Snow Festival as a special event in February. Then, men return the favour on White Day, March 14th, with gifts. Being in Japan during these months allows you to experience this unique exchange of gifts and the special treats prepared by confectioneries.

As the plum trees start blossoming, various regions in Japan celebrate plum festivals. These festivals showcase the beautiful plum blossoms, often including tea ceremonies, traditional games, and performances. The Kairakuen Garden’s Plum Blossom Festival in Mito and the Atami Baien Plum Garden Festival are particularly famous. In contrast, places like Tokyo and Kyoto are usually colder and drier, with occasional snowfall. Layering is key, as indoor areas are well-heated. Remember to pack good coats, scarves, gloves, and possibly thermal wear.

Japanese culture places a high value on manners and etiquette. Simple gestures like removing your shoes when entering someone’s home, bowing as a form of greeting, and being mindful of noise levels in public places are essential. Also, familiarize yourself with onsen etiquette if you plan to visit a hot spring. Remember, tattoos are often associated with the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) and might be frowned upon in public baths and onsens.

While Japan is a technologically advanced country, cash is still widely used, especially in smaller towns, temples, and rural areas. Many places do not accept credit cards, so carrying enough cash with you is advisable. You can withdraw Yen from ATMs at convenience stores like 7-Eleven or post offices.

Japan’s public transportation is efficient and punctual. If you plan to travel between cities, consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass before you arrive in Japan. It offers unlimited travel on most JR trains nationwide and can be a cost-effective way to explore the country. Subways and buses are convenient in cities, but understanding the system can be challenging, so a travel app or map can be handy.

While the English proficiency level in Japan varies, you’ll find signs and menus in major cities and tourist spots in English. However, learning a few basic Japanese phrases can be helpful and is appreciated by locals. Simple words like “Arigato” (Thank you), “Sumimasen” (Excuse me), and “Eigo o hanasemasu ka?” (Do you speak English?) can go a long way.

Renting a pocket Wi-Fi or purchasing a local SIM card can be incredibly useful for navigating, translating, and staying connected. Free Wi-Fi is available in many public areas, but having your own connection is more reliable and secure.

Japan is known for its cleanliness. You’ll notice a lack of public trash cans, so be prepared to carry your trash with you until you find a place to dispose of it properly. Recycling is taken seriously, and it’s expected that you follow the rules.

10 Events and Things to Do in Tokyo in February

In February, snow still accumulates in many places in Japan, and it’s a wonderful time to enjoy hot drinks and foods . It is also the season for university entrance examinations and Valentine’s Day, and many goods related to these events are on sale. There are also flowers that only bloom in February, so don’t miss them! In this article, we will introduce 10 events and things to do in and around Tokyo in February.

In Tokyo, plum blossoms begin to bloom in late January and are at their best in February. As with cherry blossoms, ume blossom viewing is very popular in Tokyo, and ume festivals are often held in places with many plum trees. Among the various plum blossom viewing events in Tokyo, the most famous is arguably the Yushima Tenjin Ume Festival. Approximately 300 plum trees of about 20 different varieties grow on the shrine grounds, and the entire area is enveloped in the flowers’ pale pink hue. At night, the shrine is illuminated, and if you time it right with the full moon, you’ll be able to experience a truly magical atmosphere.

The weather in February is still cold, but many farms in the suburbs of Tokyo and in Kanagawa Prefecture are already open for strawberry picking. Strawberries are very popular in Japan, and many varieties are grown here, making it fun to compare all the different ones.

Setsubun is a traditional holiday marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring . Many Japanese households hold Setsubun festivals, in which people throw fuku-mame (roasted ‘lucky’ soybeans) at a person dressed as an oni (demon) to ward off bad luck and misfortune. Many temples in Tokyo also host their own Setsubun festivals, and famous temples invite entertainers and celebrities as guests to throw fuku-mame at the audience. If you catch some of the beans, it is said to bring good luck in the coming year!

Valentine’s Day , which is mostly known in western countries as a day when couples celebrate their love together, has been adopted by Japan too. Here, Valentine’s Day has become a day for women to give chocolates to not only their partner, but also their male friends and coworkers. Limited edition chocolates from specialty stores are all the rage, and afternoon tea sets boasting chocolate-based sweets are also very popular.

The Kasai Rinkai Park Daffodil Festival boasts the largest area of daffodils in all of Tokyo’s 23 wards, and the best time to view them is February. Approximately 200,000 daffodils bloom beautifully here, covering an area of approximately 2,800 square meters. Visitors can follow the so-called “daffodil road” of potted daffodils leading from the park entrance to the ferris wheel area where the flower field is located. Tokyo Sea Life Park is also located here, making it perfect to combine the two.

Since it was first held in 2009, the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions has been held annually in February. Featuring the theme of artistic visual images, including video exhibitions, talk sessions, and live performances, you will surely be impressed by the outstanding visual techniques used in the artists’ works.

In February, a kite market is held at Oji Inari Shrine in Kita Ward, and many people flock here to buy the perfect kite. The town of Edo (ancient Tokyo) was often hit by large fires, and it is said that people bought kites as a good luck charm to protect them from fires. As a remnant of this tradition, the kite market is still held every year, and kites with many different and striking designs are sold here.

In Japan, New Year is celebrated according to the western calendar, but Chinese New Year occurs a few weeks later in late January or early February, and is celebrated by the Chinese population and others with many festivities and events. At this time of the year, Japan’s Chinatowns are decorated with red Chinese lanterns and mesmerising illuminations. A Chinese lion dance is held as one of the festive events, and it is said that being bitten by a Chinese lion will bring good luck and ward off evil.

The Yokohama Strawberry Festival is a month-long strawberry festival held from early February. The lineup of strawberry-focused events includes the sale of strawberries produced locally in Yokohama City as well as strawberry-based sweets. Official information for the 2023 festival has not yet been announced, but check the official website if you want to enjoy strawberries in Yokohama this year!

When the weather is still cold in Tokyo, eating warm noodles will warm your body to the core and heat you up from the inside. Ramen noodles are often paired with a flavorful broth while udon and soba noodles usually have an irresistible and more gentle flavor, and everywhere you turn in Tokyo you will find plenty of restaurants serving up steaming bowls of this delicious comfort food.

Choosing the best time of year to visit Japan can be downright overwhelming. Each of Japan’s 4 distinct seasons has its draws and drawbacks (some more than others!). We’re going to break down exactly what to expect during winter, spring, summer, and fall so you can choose the best time to visit Japan based on your travel style and interests.

Japan has four distinct seasons: You’ve got the famed cherry blossoms in the spring, festivals in the summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and powdery snow come wintertime.

So this begs the question: 

What time of year is best to visit Japan?

In short, you’ll have the best chance of comfortable weather and fewer crowds in early spring (March – early April) and in autumn (late October – November). Our personal pick would be to visit Japan during November; but more on that later…

Let me backup… Truthfully there is no correct answer, as each season has its own unique draws (and drawbacks too).

But we’re not going to just leave ya there, hangin’.

We visited Japan in summer, fall & winter

When: mid-August (2019) 

Our experience:

• Very hot and humid in most places
• Lots of Japanese tourists and international travelers in the popular places
• We had a few days of typhoon weather
• Mount Fuji wasn’t on our route, but she was only visible for a handful of days of our trip, due to clouds.
• Felt too hot to be able to enjoy onsens as much as other times of the year

Would we recommend visiting Japan in August? 

It wouldn’t be my top recommendation, honestly. I found it very hot and muggy, and I would much prefer visiting when the temps are more comfortable.

When: mid-November (2023) 

• Comfortable temperatures and no humidity
• Colorful foliage in some areas (it differs quite a bit throughout the country)
• During our 3-week trip, we had a little light rain , but not much
• Clear views of Mount Fuji
• Perfect weather for soaking in onsen
• Crowds in popular areas for foliage viewing, but nothing overwhelming

Would we recommend visiting Japan in November? 

Absolutely! Autumn is perhaps my all time favorite time to travel anywhere — and Japan is no different. I think autumn will always be my favorite time to visit Japan!

When: early February (2015)

• Mild winter temperatures (we’re used to very cold winters, and this wasn’t bad for us)
• Snow in the mountains was magical
• Even though winter is said to be the best time to view Mount Fuji , she was covered in fog when we visited
• Onsens were very enjoyable (we had a private outdoor onsen while it was snowing, which was amazing!)
• Obviously the cities are still busy (because they’re highly populated), but the amount of tourists was lower than other seasons
• Good deals on accommodation since it was outside of peak season
• We saw a few plum blossoms in Tokyo that were blooming early, which was a pleasant surprise!

Would we recommend visiting Japan in February?  Yes! I think winter is one of the best times to visit Japan and it’s very underrated. Next time we visit in the winter, I want to add more outdoor onsens and a snowboarding trip in the legendary Japanese powder!

While not a large country exactly, Japan spreads more than 1,800 miles (2,900+ kilometers) north to south, from the island of Hokkaido in the northeast all the way down to the island of Okinawa in the southwest.

A distance that large means the weather from north to south varies quite a lot. Hokkaido can be freezing while the subtropical island of Okinawa can be experiencing a beach day.

For the purpose of this article, we’ll mostly be discussing the weather on the island of Honshu. 

Located in the middle of the country, Honshu is where Tokyo , Osaka and Kyoto are all located, and is where most international travelers will start and end their trip, especially if it is your first time in Japan .

Another thing to take into consideration is that Japan is a very mountainous country. Common sense tells us that when you venture to higher elevations, you’ll find colder temperatures.

Fun Example: We went up into the Japanese Alps in August and found a drastic temperature swing: 95°F (35°C) at sea level to 65°F (18°C) in the mountains. This same area has snow until as late as early July. Crazy, huh?!

Let’s chat about the sun, the snow, the rain, and those dreaded typhoons. We’ll go over what type of weather you should expect throughout the year and describe our experience with a typhoon.

We’re also going over some important information if you are interested in viewing Mount Fuji.

Spoiler alert: You won’t be able to see this iconic mountain for much of the year.

Stats on Japan weather & seasons:

• Hottest month in Japan: August (average 80°F/41°C)
• Coldest month in Japan: January (41°F/5°C)
• Rainiest months in Japan: June and September
• Driest months in Japan: December and January
• Most crowded month in Japan: late April – early May (aka “Golden Week”, explained in the section about Spring )
• Least crowded months in Japan: January – early March are the least popular times to visit, which can mean cheaper prices and less crowds

Note: Again, these stats are for the central island of Honshu. If you are planning to visit the northernmost island of Hokkaido, or Okinawa in the very south, be sure to look up their specific weather, as they vary from the rest of the county.

Rainy season in Japan: Early Summer

The majority of the country experiences a rainy season from June through mid-July.

The good news is that during the rainy season, there’s a roughly 45% chance of precipitation each day (data from Tokyo), meaning you’ll have some dry days too! Some of those rainy days will be heavy, while others will be sunny before or after the rain.

Interesting Fact: Tokyo is one of the rainiest big cities on earth! In fact, it has more than double the amount of annual rainfall as London. Say whaaaat?!

Despite rain, you’ll find life goes on as usual in Japan, as locals are used to it. Do as the Japanese do and buy an umbrella to stay dry!

Typhoon season in Japan: Late Summer

Late May through October is known as typhoon season in Japan, with the majority of typhoons occurring in August and September. Data from the last 30 years show that an average of 11 typhoons approach the coast per year.

What is a typhoon?

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone. They are formed in the same way a hurricane forms, and the only real difference is the location at which they occur .

What is a typhoon like in Japan?

We visited Japan during the month of August, which as you now know is the peak of typhoon season. And one typhoon made landfall during our visit.

So how bad was it, really?

This was our experience: 

The entire day leading up to the typhoon was sunny with blue skies, and we both had this feeling that it wouldn’t be that bad.

But everyone was talking about it and how strong it would supposedly be. There was talk about trains shutting down, and we had a food tour cancel on us because restaurants were closing up shop.

But it’s beautiful outside, we thought naively. We put on rain jackets, grabbed our one umbrella and headed into town just as a drizzle began to start.

Soon, the winds increased and the rain started really coming down. But the trains still ran, and we decided to go catch a movie. By the time we got out of the show, the streets were mostly empty and the rain was really pounding, so despite our umbrella and rain jackets, we got completely soaked.

By the next morning, blue skies started peeking out from behind clouds and by the afternoon you would never know what had happened the previous night.

What to expect: Heavy rainfall and high winds, canceled and/or delayed trains, canceled tours. In some cases, it may only interrupt a day or two, and in others it might have longer-lasting effects. You should expect some plans to change since Japanese people take typhoons very seriously.

Best time of year to view Mount Fuji

Many visitors to Japan will want to glimpse the country’s most famous mountain, and for good reason — it’s absolutely stunning, and seeing Mount Fuji in person will be one of the highlights of your trip. That is, if you see her .

One thing many first-time visitors to Japan may not realize (ourselves included) is that Mount Fuji is notoriously shy. This means there is much of the year where your chances of seeing her are rare. Instead, this shy mountain will stay cloaked behind clouds and haze, only occasionally peeking through.

So what time of year will you have the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji?

• Best chances of seeing Mount Fuji: Based on data from years past, you will have the highest chance of seeing Mount Fuji between the months of November and February.
• Worst chances of seeing Mount Fuji: Alternatively, between April and August, you will have a slim chance of glimpsing this iconic mountain.

That said, nothing is promised when it comes to weather. 

We visited Japan for the first time during early February, when we should have had a good chance of seeing Fuji. We spent the night in Hakone and bought the (not so cheap!) Hakone Day Pass to get close to the mountain, yet we only saw WHITE FRICKIN’ CLOUDS.

And on the other hand, we’ve known people who have seen Fuji peek out during July and August, supposedly bad months for viewing the mountain.

But if you’re looking to get that iconic shot of a clear sky day and the mountain towering in the background in her famous symmetrical grandeur, late autumn through early spring will be your best bet at capturing this sight.

Japan has 4 distinct seasons: The winter is cold and the summer is hot. If either of those would bother you, it’s easy to eliminate a season right off the bat.

Spring is famously known for stunning displays of cherry blossoms around the country . But when we say famous, we mean it. Japan gets very busy this time of year with domestic and international travelers, so if crowds bother you, this is another easy elimination.

Fall comes with spectacular autumn foliage , and while not as crowded as cherry blossom season, it’s not an unpopular time to travel.

We’re going to go over what to expect during each season in detail so you can better plan your trip to Japan.

But before we dive in…

Did you know there are 72 “seasons” in Japan?

The traditional Japanese calendar was split up into 24 sections, and each of those were further divided into 3 subsections, creating 72 “micro seasons” .

These micro-seasons last 5 days, and the names of some of them are poetic:

• Frogs start singing (May 5th – 9th)
• Great rains sometimes fall (August 3rd – 7th)
• Dew glistens white on grass (September 8th – 12th)
• Insects hole up underground (September 28th – October 2nd)
• Maple leaves and ivy turn yellow (November 2nd – 6th)

While this isn’t necessarily something people go by in modern times, it’s a good reminder that the weather and atmosphere changes very often in Japan and it’s important to be prepared for it all.

During the winter months, major cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto tend to enjoy mild temperatures, but you can find snow and colder temps in the mountains and on Hokkaido (the northernmost island in Japan).

Crowds tend to be fewer during the winter season, except for at the ski resorts where outdoor enthusiasts will be spoiled with some of the best powder in the world.

Winter comes with sunshine and blue skies that are statistically the clearest they’ll be all year long.

While winter may not be the first season you think of traveling, there’s actually a ton to do, and we think it is a great time to visit Japan .

• Average winter temperatures:  35 ° F – 55 ° F (Tokyo) (2 ° C – 13 ° C)

Winter months at a glance

• December:  Third coldest month of the year, lots of Bonenkai (“forget the year”) parties and celebrations. Ski season begins in Sapporo.
• January:  Coldest month of the year, clear and sunny skies, snowy in the northern part of the country, best month for skiing and winter activities.
• February:  Second coldest month of the year, still great for skiing in the mountains, yet you can start seeing spring plum blossoms further south in the country.

Best things to do in the winter in Japan

What to pack for winter in Japan

• Hand warmers (you can buy these pretty much everywhere in Japan)
• Ski gear (if needed)

With stunning  sakura  (cherry blossoms) popping up all around the country and temperatures warming, it should come as no surprise that spring is a popular time to visit Japan. A  very  popular time, indeed.

If you travel to Japan in the spring, you’ll be rewarded with comfortable temperatures, beautiful blossoms, and  crowds .

• Typical weather in Japan during the spring:  Nice during the day, but chilly at night. Mostly sunny days with a more showers near the end of May.
• Average spring temperatures:  40 ° F – 70 ° F (Tokyo) (4 ° C – 21 ° C)

• crowded (make travel plans far in advance!)
• things may be more expensive since it is peak season

What is Golden Week in Japan?

“Golden Week” is a series of four national holidays that all fall within the same week from April 29th – May 5th every year.

• April 29, Showa Day:  birthday of Emperor Showa, who ruled the country during World War II.
• May 3, Constitution Day ( Kenpo kinenbi ):  called  ,  this is the celebration of the Japanese constitution ratification in 1947.
• May 4, Green Day ( Midori no hi ):  similar to Earth Day, this holiday honors the environment.
• Pssst! For everyone else out there wondering why they don’t include young girls in this, there is a “Girls’ Festival” (Hina Matsuri) on March 3rd.

Many Japanese people have holiday from work during this time, so it is a popular time to travel for both international and domestic visitors.

If your trip falls during these dates (or even a bit before and after), you’ll have the unique opportunity to see some celebrations and mingle with lots of Japanese travelers.

But be warned, you should start booking your accommodation well in advance because rooms sell out in popular places, like Kyoto, for example. You’ll also want to reserve seats on trains ahead of your trip, otherwise you’ll be out of luck.

Should you avoid visiting during Golden Week in Japan?

I’m going to be honest, I don’t think we would travel to Japan during Golden Week because of the insane crowds.

If you want to see Cherry Blossom but aren’t excited about the prospect of crowds, we’d urge you to avoid Golden Week, and instead travel to Japan during early March.

When and where can you see cherry blossoms?

Cherry blossoms are only in bloom for roughly one week per location. They bloom at different times throughout the country, so if you want to extend the length of time you can view them, it’s best to travel south to north so you can see them for a longer period of time.

• Fukuoka: Late March – Early April
• Hiroshima: Late March – Early April
• Kyoto: First Week of April (very popular)
• Osaka: First Week of April (very popular)

• Matsumoto: 2nd- 3rd week in April
• Sapporo: Late April – Early May

Spring months at a glance

• March:  Temperatures are still cool, but it noticeably warms throughout the month. Skiing season in the mountains is starting to wind down, and toward the end of the month the first cherry blossoms start to reveal themselves.
• April:  This is the prime month for cherry blossom viewing, though many Japanese people have a whole week off from work (Golden Week), so most major cherry blossom sites will be incredibly crowded.
• May:  Very nice weather during the month of May — warm temperatures and sunny skies. Though it is technically the start of typhoon season, strong storms are very rare during the month of May.

Best things to do in the spring in Japan

• Head to Kyoto to photograph sakura (aka cherry blossoms) of course!
• Catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji
• Try some interesting new foods in Japan
• Take a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima to check out some of the city’s super important historical sites

• …you don’t mind paying a bit more for hotels and tours during peak season

• Hiking attire if you plan to hit the trails

Summer in Japan is the time for festivals and celebrations. The summer spans from June to August, with August being the busiest travel month because school is out and many Japanese people travel over the Obon holiday (August 13-15).

(Unlucky for us, we unknowingly decided to visit Japan for our second time in August…whoops!)

Be prepare on ways to beat the humidity because it can get pretty sticky. Also it’s rainy season and the start of typhoon season, so don’t forget your rain jacket and umbrella

• Typical weather in Japan during the summer:  Hot, humid, sticky, and rainy. But not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
• Average summer temperatures:  70 ° F – 90 ° F (Tokyo) (21 ° C – 32 ° C)
• Festivals throughout the country during the summer months
• Prime season for outdoor activities like hiking
• great time to try scuba diving in Japan
• can get very humid
• rain is common at the beginning of summer (June – mid-July), and typhoons are common at the end of summer (August – September)

How bad is the heat in summer, really?

Over the last few years, I’ve realized I don’t handle extreme heat very well. I get tired and crabby much more quickly in the heat. Needless to say, I was very nervous about traveling to Japan during August — the hottest month of the year!

So what was it like?

Well, it did get pretty hot, like 98°F hot (37°C). And it did rain on us a few times but typically it would only last for 20-30 minutes and the rain would stop.

Some days were worse than others. After a rain, for example, it was actually pretty comfortable.

We’ve heard that summer in Tokyo is similar to summer in NYC, hot and humid. And Osaka in summer is similar to Washington D.C. in the summer, which is even more hot and humid. 

Knowing what to expect is half the battle , and this way you can prepare yourself for it.

All of our accommodation (even in tiny villages) had strong AC, so we never had an issue with being comfortable at night.

Summer months at a glance

• June:  The beginning of the month is quite nice, comparable to the weather in May. However,  tsuyu  (rainy season) starts around mid-June and last for about a month. It’s not rainy all day but there is a June gloom feeling that hangs around. Temperatures get warmer and the humidity increases as the month progresses.
• July:  Starts out rainy because of  tsuyu  (rainy season), this only lasts until mid-July. Temperatures and humidity continue to rise as this is typically the second hottest month of the year. Great time to see festivals including Kyoto famous Gion Matsuri festival.
• August:  The hottest month of the year in Japan. August is a good time to venture into the mountains to escape the heat. Many Japanese have August 13th-15th off because of Obon holiday, so try to avoid this time because it can get busy.

Best things to do in the summer in Japan

• Check out Tokyo’s digital art museum on a day that’s too hot or rainy to be outside
• Enjoy festivals including Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri

• Scuba diving (apparently the diving is actually really good in Japan!)
• Head to the beach

Ever thought of going  scuba diving in Japan ?  Being an island nation, the diving in Japan is actually quite good, and being an off the radar scuba destinations means less crowded dive sites! If you are visiting Japan in the summer time, you’ll have the best conditions for diving all over the country.

What to pack for summer in Japan

• Anti-chafing cream
• Hand-held fan (you can buy these all over and they make a nice Japanese souvenir )
• Deodorant, finding quality deodorant in Japan is very difficult (we switched to natural deodorant several years ago and will never go back!)
• Light, loose clothing that wicks sweat
• Umbrella for rain and shade

Fall in Japan

With typhoon season peaking at the beginning of September, the start of fall in Japan is typically rainy depending on where you are. However, the weather starts to clear up in October and by November the leaves are changing.

We visited Japan in November 2023 and put together this guide to autumn in Japan that’s full of useful info.

• When is autumn in Japan?  September – November
• Typical weather in Japan during the autumn:  Rainy in September and beginning of October because of typhoon season

When can you see fall foliage in Japan?

The colorful leaves peak a bit later than other places in the Northern Hemisphere, like North America and Europe. The best display of autumn colors can typically be seen toward the end of November and even through the beginning of December.

• September:  peak of typhoon season in the southern prefectures, there can be airport and train delays. But it is the month with the least amount of visitors so it will be less busy.
• October:  rainy in the beginning of the month but the temperatures start to drop making going outside more manageable.

It’s a good idea to check the calendar before booking your flight to Japan, as there are many national holidays that can affect your travels.

In our opinion…

We’ve traveled to Japan in both the summer and the wintertime, and each had its own pros and cons.

Summer was hot and humid—like really humid—so we found ourselves sweating through our shirts daily. But we’ve been in hot and humid climates before, so honestly, it wasn’t anything we hadn’t dealt with before. But still, it wasn’t all that pleasant, and it wouldn’t be our season of choice.

The wintertime was picturesque in the countryside where the snow stuck to the ground. And in the big cities, we actually got many sunny, blue sky days which was a surprise. The cold temperatures made it fun to pop into cozy noodle shops or soak in hot onsens, whereas those activities were not quite so pleasant in the August heat.

We preferred winter over summer, because the crowds were fewer and we’re accustomed to cold weather, so we found it to be quite mild actually.

However, if we were able to choose, we would without a doubt, travel to Japan in the fall: early November, specifically.

November has a smaller chance of rain than October, and more comfortable temperatures than December.

The temperatures will have cooled off from the crazy summer humidity, yet it wouldn’t be too cold for hiking. It wouldn’t have quite the same crazy crowds as cherry blossom season brings. And fall foliage in Japan is something we’ve been dreaming about seeing!

Alternatively, early March would offer the beginnings of cherry blossom season, comfortable weather, and less crowds than those you’ll find late April and early May during Golden Week.

How many days do you need in Japan?

There’s so much to see and do in Japan that it can be overwhelming trying to decide how long your trip should be. Ideally, 2-3 weeks  will give you enough time to see iconic and lesser-known sights as well as recover from a long travel day and potentially a big time difference.

Best places to visit in japan.

Known as the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan's civilization dates as far back as 30,000 years. Today, the archipelago seamlessly blends its rich history with its ultra-modern present. And while its capital, Tokyo, is a must-visit for first timers, Japan has so much more to offer travelers of all types, from cherry blossoms to white sand beaches to soothing onsen (hot spring spas). U.S. News took into account cultural attractions, culinary options and accessibility (among other factors) to bring you the best places to visit in Japan. Izu Peninsula

This metropolis is a feast for the senses. Neighborhoods like Ginza and Akihabara buzz with flashing lights and larger-than-life shopping, while Meiji Shrine and the Tokyo Imperial Palace give you a look into Japan's storied past. There are also a number of green spaces like Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, which acts as a place to escape from the chaotic, concrete jungle. What's more, Tokyo is regularly regarded as a top foodie city thanks in part to its abundant Michelin-starred restaurants (the most you'll find in any city in the world), so come hungry.

Travelers most interested in Japan's history and traditions should head to Kyoto. Centrally located on the archipelago, Kyoto has long been considered the cultural capital of Japan. Here, you'll find more than 1,000 Buddhist temples and 400-plus Shinto shrines (you can't miss the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha), including a whopping 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can also stroll through geisha districts like Gion and Miyagawacho, admire classic wooden architecture and visit traditional teahouses before checking out more modern attractions, such as the Kyoto Aquarium.

Nikko is the place to go to see lavish architecture surrounded by nature. Head to Nikko National Park, one of Japan's oldest national parks, to enjoy an up-close look at traditional structures situated alongside mountains, lakes, waterfalls and hot springs. The park is especially beautiful in fall when its trees display vivid shades of yellow, red and orange. The 103 Edo-era (1603–1868) temples and shrines in Nikko include world-renowned sites like Toshogu Shrine and Rinnoji Temple.

Situated about 35 miles southwest of Kyoto, this port city is worth a visit for its food alone. One of the city's most famous dishes, the tasty pancake-like okonomiyaki (which means "grilled as you like it" in Japanese), is made with batter, cabbage and your choice of meat and other toppings. After you've gotten your fill of the delectable local cuisine, explore the flashy Dotonbori neighborhood, check out the reconstructed 16th-century Osaka Castle or head to contemporary sights like Universal Studios Japan and the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

As Japan's second most populous city, Yokohama is often touted as a more approachable and more affordable alternative to Tokyo (located 22 miles northeast). As one of the country's first ports to open to international trade, Yokohama features unique culture fusions, including a sizable expat population, Western-style buildings in the Yamate area and the largest Chinatown in Japan (it has more businesses than residents). While here, visitors can explore Minato Mirai 21, the city's modern central district teeming with skyscrapers and shopping malls, and visit museums ranging from the Cup Noodles Museum to the Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum.

More than 160 islands comprise Okinawa, a top destination for snorkeling and diving. The Japanese prefecture boasts proximity to multiple coral reefs teeming with fish, manta rays and hammerhead sharks that you can access from beautiful beaches like those found on Okinawa's Kerama Islands. These 20-plus islands are also ideal places to see migrating whales between January and March. Back on the main island, visitors will find one of the world's largest aquariums, several castle ruins and a museum that focuses on Okinawa's unique history and culture. And on the less developed Iriomote Island, adventurous travelers can hike to awe-inspiring waterfalls.

Spared from World War II air raids and the major natural disasters that have affected other Japanese cities, Kanazawa on the western coast is home to some of the country's best-preserved architecture from the Edo period. Sites like Kanazawa Castle, Seisonkaku Villa and Myoryuji temple are popular among visitors, as are the Higashi Chaya geisha district and Nagamachi Samurai District. Plus, no trip to Kanazawa would be complete without a visit to the resplendent Kenrokuen Garden. With its water features, bridges and a variety of flowering trees that add beauty to any season, Kenrokuen is often described as the perfect garden.

Nestled in the mountains of the Gifu prefecture, Takayama is ideal for visitors looking for a rural retreat with a dose of history. Start your visit with a rickshaw ride through the well-preserved old town, which features sake breweries, traditional residences and shops that date back to the feudal ages. Then, head to the Hida Folk Village, a former farming village with 30 gassho-style houses. When you've worked up an appetite, indulge in must-try local specialties including Hida beef and Takayama ramen. To further immerse yourself in Takayama culture, visit during the Takayama Festival, held for two days every spring and fall.

The country's tallest mountain and one of its most iconic landmarks is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. For centuries, Japanese artists and poets have been inspired by Mount Fuji's almost perfectly round form. The Fuji Five Lakes region at the foot of this UNESCO World Heritage Site makes a great base for the thousands of climbers who visit each year. Enjoy the area's museums and amusement park during the warmer months. Or, arrive in winter to soak in the onsen and ski Mount Fuji's slopes.

Located on Kyushu (Japan's third-largest island), Fukuoka offers travelers a mix of urban sprawl, sandy coastlines and ancient temples and shrines. Can't-miss sights include Tochoji Temple – home of the largest sitting wooden Buddha in Japan – and Nokonoshima Island, which features colorful flower fields and beautiful views of the surrounding bay. Fukuoka is also known for its incredible Hakata ramen, so be sure to try this tasty dish at one of the city's many food stalls. Plan your visit around one of Fukuoka's lively festivals, such as the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, which takes place throughout the first half of July.

Head to the smallest of Japan's four main islands if you're looking to get off the beaten path. After you've dried off, visit one of Hakone's art museums, such as the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the Okada Museum of Art or the Hakone Museum of Art. No Hakone vacation would be complete without enjoying spectacular views of Mount Fuji from Lake Ashinoko and the Komagatake Ropeway.

After an earthquake caused significant damage to the city in 1995, Kobe rebuilt itself into a thriving cosmopolitan city. You'll want to remember to bring your appetite when you visit. Kobe is famous for its namesake beef, as well as its sake. It's also considered one of Japan's most attractive cities, with sleek architecture and beautiful green spaces like Sorakuen Garden. For some of the city's best views – especially at sunset – go to the top of Mount Rokko or ride the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway. End your evening exploring Nankinmachi (Kobe's compact Chinatown) or dining at one of Kobe Harborland's waterfront restaurants.

For many, Hiroshima brings up memories of war, as the city is where the world's first atomic bomb attack occurred in 1945. But today, Hiroshima is a city of peace, with the vast Peace Memorial Park as the center for monuments and memorials like the  the Children's Peace Monument and the UNESCO-certified Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Atomic Bomb Dome). It is also a city of great beauty. An outdoor-lover's delight, Matsumoto is just 22 miles east of Kamikochi, an awe-inspiring valley in the Hotaka mountain range. But though it serves as a gateway to the Japanese Alps, this city in central Japan should not be skipped over. As the birthplace of contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, known for polka dots and pumpkins, Matsumoto pays her tribute at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. Meanwhile, those who prefer more ancient masterpieces can visit Matsumoto Castle, one of the oldest and grandest castles in the country.  

Japan's first permanent capital is famous for housing the Great Buddha, a nearly 50-foot-tall bronze statue of Buddha. You'll find this jaw-dropping national treasure in Nara's Todaiji temple, which is the one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. While on the temple grounds, explore the deer-filled Nara Park and the ornate Kasuga Taisha shrine. Also save time for visiting Yakushiji Temple, one of Japan's oldest temples that dates back to A.D. 730.

This peninsula situated 62 miles southwest of Tokyo makes a great getaway from the busy city. It is popular among locals and tourists alike thanks to its relaxing hot springs and stunning beaches. These, along with various museums and ryokans, can be found in cities like Atami and Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula's eastern coast. During spring visits, travelers will also want to check out Kawazu's vibrant pink blooms at the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. Meanwhile, on the southern and western coasts, vacationers will find more rugged yet equally scenic coastlines, such as Cape Irozaki and Dogashima.

Charming and full of cultural sights, this samurai city is steeped in history and has a lovely castle for visitors to explore. Lying on the shores of Lake Shinji, there is an old-time feel to the place, as fishermen cast their nets in the lake and the lazy river flows by.

There are a few good museums to visit, and although the historic center is easily completed in half a day, Matsue´s peaceful ambiance means that visitors often end up staying longer than they intended.

The impressive, domineering, feudal-era fortress of Himeji-jo is reputed to be the finest castle in Japan, and is the prime draw in this quiet city. Nearby, there are some lovely samurai houses to explore, with their delightful traditional gardens.

Apart from a couple of museums, there is not much to do in Himeji, though there are the usual shrines, temples and restaurants that are not too dissimilar from other Japanese cites. An easy day-trip from a number of places, history lovers will love Himeji.

A charming and welcoming place, visitors to Beppu invariably stop by to relax and soak in the hot springs that populate the city. A popular ‘onsen’ (Japanese hot spring) resort, the city has over three thousand springs and life in Beppu is heavily geared towards the tourism sector.

The steam and mist that floats through the streets lends a magical air to the town, which is located on the coast and backed by mountains. With some impressive architecture on show and a quaint, laid-back feel to the place, Beppu is a lovely city in which to sit back and relax.

An attractive city set on a hillside next to the sea, Kobe is sandwiched between the water and Mount Rokko, which rears up behind it. A historic port, the city´s small stature belies the cosmopolitan feel about its streets. When wandering around, you can find religious buildings dedicated to every major religion.

With some excellent restaurants and cool cafes on offer, as well as lively nightlife, Kobe is great fun to explore. If you use the city as a gateway, many amazing sights are just a short train journey away.

11. Nagasaki

A picturesque place, Nagasaki´s lovely location nestled peacefully amidst hills overlooking a harbor, obscures the fact that the city was tragically devastated by an atomic bomb. While many visitors come to wander around the memorials and museums dedicated to the bombing, Nagasaki has much more to offer; it is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with lots to see and do.

Once the only port open to foreign traders, this openness is still evident; there are a mix of Western and Eastern influences here, as demonstrated by the churches, temples and cuisine on offer.

10. Yokohama

Despite being less than half-an-hour away from Tokyo, Yokohama certainly has its own identity and, as Japan´s second largest city, it´s well worth checking out. Lying on a lovely bay, it is a cosmopolitan destination, as evidenced by its large foreign community, wealth of different architectural styles, and delicious cuisine from around the world.

With a lively arts and jazz scene, it is pleasant to walk along its spacious streets – despite being a major port, Yokohama feels uncluttered and clean.

The largest city in Kyushu, Fukuoka used to be two towns before the different areas joined to form the city we know today. A friendly, welcoming place, what Fukuoka lacks in terms of actual sights, it more than makes up for in its charm and pleasant atmosphere. With a couple of great museums, some great architecture, delicious ramen, and the chance to see their famous baseball team in action, Fukuoka is well worth a visit for all that it has to offer.

Lying on the banks of the river running through it, there are some lovely temples dotted around the city and its surroundings. Many people use Fukuoka as a base from which to explore the rest of Kyushu.

Home to one of the country´s most famous festivals, every year Sendai´s leafy streets are thronged with people who have come to enjoy Tanabata Matsuri. Located in the Tohuko region, it is the largest city in the area and offers an insight into the local culture, with many visitors stopping here on their way to the wilderness nearby.

With a lively nightlife scene and a delightful dilapidated castle with lovely gardens, Sendai is a pleasant place to visit and an even nicer place to live. From here, you can also head to the nearby hot springs or to Matsushima, which has one of the best views in Japan.

The capital city of the island of Hokkaido, Sapporo is a chilled-out place to visit, with all the trappings of a typical Japanese city. While most people see it as a stop-off point on their way to the island´s delightful mountains and hot springs, the city itself has more than enough to keep guests entertained for a while – with fantastic restaurants, gigantic shopping malls and lively nightlife.

While people often visit during the summer, when Sapporo has a number of great festivals, the highlight of the year is during the renowned Snow Festival, when hordes of tourists descend upon the city to see the amazing sculptures.

Although the endless concrete buildings do not make Osaka a pretty place by any means, the profusion of neon lights certainly adds color and life to the city. A bustling metropolis with a lovely river meandering through its heart, Osaka is a fun place to visit with a lively local arts and music scene.

Renowned for its fantastic culinary scene and love of food, here you can dine in excellent restaurants or pick up a wide variety of great street food.

Considered to be the birthplace of Japanese civilization, this ancient former capital has a wealth of historic sites for visitors to enjoy. Easily explored on foot, the city´s undoubted highlight is the impressive Great Buddha statue, located in the lovely Todai-ji temple.

Other temples delightfully showcase the best of Japanese art and architecture, while the surrounding hills – which add to the picturesque nature of Nara – have yet more shrines and temples worth visiting.

4. Kanazawa

With beautiful temples, ancient shrines and a range of fantastic museums, this charming city lying on the Sea of Japan is not to be missed. Wonderfully preserved, its ancient neighborhoods are lovely to wander around, with the old geisha and samurai districts being particularly delightful. In fact, Kanazawa rivals Kyoto in the number of historical and cultural attractions that it has on show.

Although seldom visited by westerners, Japanese tourists flock to this city. The highlight is undoubtedly Kenroku-en, an impressive castle with idyllic gardens surrounding it.

3. Hiroshima

Lying in western Honshu, Hiroshima´s history will forever be linked to the atomic bomb which flattened the city on August 6th, 1945. Almost completely destroyed, Hiroshima has remarkably been reconstructed and is now a bustling modern city, full of life.

While many visitors come to pay their respects at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum and visit the chilling A-Bomb Dome ruins, the city has many other sights for visitors to enjoy. It also serves as a gateway to some beautiful nearby islands including famous Miyajima (shrine island).

The former capital of Japan drips with history and is reputed to be the nation´s most beautiful city. Upon arriving, however, many visitors are surprised to see Kyoto´s urban sprawl, which hides away its fantastic historical sites and rich cultural heritage. With over two thousand temples and shrines, as well as numerous Zen gardens, winding cobbled alleys and traditional teahouses, Kyoto is both the spiritual and cultural capital of Japan.

I have visited 8 cities in 2023. Sendai, Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji. Next will visit Sapporo and Fukuoka.

I have visited 5 largest cities out of the 15 in the list. Eager indeed to travel to this lovely country again to fulfill my dream travelling from the southernmost city Okinawa to the Hokkaido’s most north tip in Wakkanai.

Japan's beauty is not limited to Tokyo and Kyoto. The country is a hub of wonderful towns that are worth a trip. Therefore, this list was updated to include two of the best cities to visit in Japan besides Tokyo and Kyoto.

If tourists want to sample some of the greatest cuisine and beverages Japan has to offer, they should head over to Osaka , a seaside city famed for its incredible nightlife and outstanding cuisine. Tokyo's big-city energy is also present here but on a little lesser scale. This way, tourists can visit cities in Japan other than Tokyo and Kyoto while having the same vibes and escaping the crowds. Tourists are recommended to visit the Osaka Castle and Park in between all of their eating and exploring. It is one of the most well-known sights in Japan and is definitely worth visiting.

The island of Naoshima, which is reachable via ferry, is a wonderful location. Nagasaki is most often associated with the atomic bomb and the tragedy that followed. For those whose idea of a holiday in Japan includes spending hours soaking in hot water springs, Beppu is the place to be. Not only does the abundance of hot springs make Beppu the Onsen City of Japan, but Beppu also has several boiling ponds known as Jigoku or hell. Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is not a city but a traditional Japanese alpine village stuck in time . It is part of a national park and is a great place to visit to see the way things used to be in Japan. Here (and its sister village Gokayama), visitors may feel like they are living in the world of the 2003 movie, The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise (although it was actually filmed in New Zealand).

Hiroshima is one of only two cities to ever be hit with a nuclear bomb . It is also a testament to how cities can bounce back from destruction, being today a thriving city of over one million people. It was founded in 1589 as a castle town but transformed into a major industrial hub (which made it a target for nuclear bombing).

Today visitors can see the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Hiroshima Peace Memorial and commemorate the bombing wishing for such destruction to never again return to this planet.

Sapporo is the capital of Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. It is the largest city north of Tokyo and is considered the cultural and economic center of Hokkaido. The city hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics and is one of the best places in Japan to enjoy the winter season. Come in early February and attend the Sapporo Snow Festival. The festival draws over 2 million visitors from far and wide. Additionally, Sapporo is home to the only beer museum in Japan - the Sapporo Beer Museum.

Naha is the capital of the Okinawa Prefecture of Japan ( Okinawa is Japan's fifth major island ). The city has a population of around 300,000 and enjoys a humid subtropical climate (quite the opposite of Hokkaido's Sapporo). It is a stunning city and the gateway to Okinawa Island (which Americans may recall from the costly American invasion of the islands in World War Two). One of the top attractions in the city is the restored and rebuilt Shuri Castle (a former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom).
