The colorful houses on Charleston's infamous Rainbow Row make for a spectacular photo background. Other top activities include the city's harbor, Frankie's Fun Park (for the kids), farmers' markets, museums and shopping. Luckily, you can still enjoy the warm temperatures of South Carolina in October without any of the harsh summer humidity. Hotels typically start as low as $100 a night and get more expensive the closer you are to the center of Charleston. Airfare starts around $140 for a round-trip ticket .

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

If you're the kind of person who prefers to spend your vacation primarily in a bathing suit, then you'll want to book a quick flight to Puerto Viejo . October is the month to get the cheapest flights to Costa Rica . Puerto Viejo has everything you could want on vacation — water sports, hiking, zip lining, snorkeling, nightlife, shopping and even animal sanctuaries you can visit. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

calcite springs and the yellowstone river

If you love fresh air, nature and wildlife, a trip to Yellowstone sounds like the ideal vacay. Not only do hotels in the area start at $90 a night ($15 if you're camping ), but the impending winter means that wildlife is on full display. Bears, wolves, moose, elk, bison, otters and fox can be seen in almost every area of the park. Hike, walk, or fish and spend your time taking photos to show your friends and family when you get back home. Certain camp grounds start to close in October (or earlier) so make sure you check ahead of time to confirm your sleeping arrangements.

Bar Harbor, Maine

You'll have to venture little ways north to find this idyllic spot. Before the temperature drops to a frigid 19°F come December, take a drive up the East Coast to enjoy the picturesque nature of Bar Harbor. The stunning coastal view is only enhanced by the changing leaves, which hit their peak colors around mid-October. The town's quick-and-easy access to Acadia National Park as well as the Bar Island Trail , Lulu Lobster Boat Ride , Atlantic Climbing School , and whale watching make Bar Harbor the perfect place to take the entire family.

Edinburgh, Scotland

As the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh has a rustic European beauty that stuns locals and tourists alike. Known for the Edinburgh International Festival and The Fringe , the latter being the world's largest annual international arts festival, Edinburgh boasts good weather, smaller crowds and longer daylight hours in October. It's a great time to explore medieval architecture, the Scottish Highlands , Edinburgh Castle , and Inchcolm Abbey while enjoying a sip or two of whiskey between the excursions thanks to the Scotch Whiskey Experience . Lodging can cost as little as $14 , with the most expensive part of your trip likely being airfare. Fun fact: Edinburgh is often known for having a "nutty, toasty" smell that wafts through the streets due to all the local breweries and distilleries.

St. Augustine, Florida

If you enjoy the warm weather but don't want to be subjected to humidity, a visit to St. Augustine in October is your ideal getaway. As the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the United States , the city is chock-full of historic landmarks, like the Castillo de San Marcos Monument , the Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park and the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum . The kids will especially enjoy the Sea Dragon Airboat Adventure , the Alligator Farm Zoological Park and the Tag! Children's Museum of St. Augustine . The only snag about this trip? The closest airport ( Jacksonville International Airport ) is 50 minutes away.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

The gorgeous views and beautiful fall foliage make the Grand Canyon a great vacation in the outdoors before the winter temperatures hit. Since the crowds decrease dramatically after Labor Day, you and the family can go hiking and spend a night or more camping, rafting or simply enjoying a scenic drive. Flights can cost as little as $281 round trip and lodging can cost as little as $15 if you're planning on camping inside the park.

Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe rarely has a time of year when it's not busy. But the best time to visit is, you guessed it, October. Roundtrip airfare can be found for as little as $68 , hotels as low as $110 a night and camping for a fee of around $41 per night . In addition to running, walking or hiking one of Lake Tahoe's many trails , you can also go apple-picking at a local orchard, take some pictures of the truly stunning fall foliage in the area or attend a local concert. There's also the annual Freakers Ball Annual Halloween costume party . Occasionally, snow can start falling as early as October or November, but if you're fine with a few flurries then book away.

Newport, Rhode Island

Enjoy a relaxing getaway to Newport if you want to enjoy cool fall weather and fun autumn activities. Pick a pumpkin at the Trinity Church Pumpkin Patch while enjoying a homemade pumpkin baked good and live music, take a ghost tour at night through town, or attend one of the many fall festivals like the Rogue Island Comedy Festival , Festa Italiana or Newport Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival . If you're planning a trip with the kids, there's even a Hocus Pocus party on October 5th to celebrate the new sequel, which was filmed in Rhode Island . You can also see the autumn leaves at their most vibrant since peak fall foliage occurs around mid- to late-October in Newport .

Lisbon, Portugal

With flights priced as little as $293 and a variety of highly-rated yet cheap hotels costing about $72 a night , Lisbon is the perfect vacation for those who want an international trip on a budget. Enjoy local cuisine at the Time Out Market or enjoy a trip around the city to see monuments. 22 Cheap destinations in 2023 with great weather in October

October is a great month to travel for most of us because the weather in North America tends to be mild in most of the better places, the crowds are a bit thinner, and airfares and hotel prices are generally lower than they were all summer. There are even places in southern Europe where you can spend time on a beach in the first half of October, and the weather is pleasant in most of the rest of the continent as well.

Asia has some fantastic options as well in October. Some parts of Asia and Latin America are extremely rainy in October, but many other places have really lovely weather and much smaller crowds as well. Quite a few places on the list below still have summer-like weather (or better than summer!) in early October and it starts getting cool towards the end of the month. You’ll have a few more options if you can go a bit earlier so you might also want to check our list cheap places with great September weather for some interesting options.

This article was updated in April, 2023.

best travel deals for october 2023

Not only can you get a cheap flight into Cancun from most anywhere in October, but resorts charge around half what they were charging only a few months earlier. There are well over 1,000 hotels in this large area, which also includes  Playa del Carmen  and the nearby island of  Cozumel  just to the south. Even the all-inclusive resorts are unusually cheap in October, so if you mainly want to relax on a warm beach on your holiday, Cancun could be an ideal and cheap choice.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

best travel deals for october 2023

The all-inclusive resorts are also amazing bargains in October for those bold enough to go. Non-stop flights from many cities keep running this time of year, so airfare bargains tend to be easy to find as well. It’s probably also worth checking Punta Cana , which has even more all-inclusive resorts and is the southeastern corner of the Dominican Republic. The busy airport there often has better deals than to Puerto Plata as well.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

  • October avg low: 76°F/24°C
  • October avg precip: 3.3″/8.3cm

Montego Bay highlights

  • Arguably the Caribbean’s best food, especially if you like spicy
  • Sandy beaches at nearly all resorts
  • Excellent sunsets in Negril and other west-facing beaches
  • Music and nightlife in the non-tourist areas for culture vultures
  • The only large Caribbean island where all locals speak English

best travel deals for october 2023

Again, the all-inclusive resorts here are bargains worth considering even for those who’d normally shun that sort of thing. The prices in October can be so low that those places are only a bit more expensive than the a la carte resorts, so it can feel like a modestly priced room that comes with unlimited food and drinks for those who time it right. By the way, if you are looking for an all-inclusive resort on a lovely beach then Montego Bay or  Ocho Rios  are good choices, but if you prefer a small beach hotel with many restaurants and bars nearby, plus a real sense of Jamaica, then you should head to  Negril  instead.

It’s also worth noting that Montego Bay and Jamaica have a couple entries on the best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean list , including some overwater bungalows.

New Orleans, USA

  • October avg high: 80°F/27°C
  • October avg low: 60°F/16°C
  • October avg precip: 3.1″/7.8cm

New Orleans highlights

  • A famous nonstop party on Bourbon Street
  • Excellent food at surprisingly great prices
  • Arguably America’s most interesting architecture and culture
  • Many diverse and interesting neighborhoods beyond the French Quarter
  • Swamp tours and other unusual adventures nearby

best travel deals for october 2023

It can be hard to find hotel bargains in New Orleans during October, as the secret about the perfect weather is out, so it’s best to book as far in advance as possible, and perhaps even consider a bunk or a private room in one of the city’s hostels. Aside from the accommodation cost, bargains on food and drinks are pretty easy to find all year round, so this is a great budget destination in general. If you can visit New Orleans on weekdays you’ll get much cheaper rooms and smaller crowds to deal with in the tourist zones as well.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$86 per night for two people

Mexico City, Mexico

  • October avg high: 72°F/22°C

Mexico City highlights

  • Historic and gorgeous colonial city center
  • Modern culture and shopping districts that are surprisingly fancy and upscale
  • Excellent local food at affordable prices
  • Pyramids and other nearby Aztec ruins that are easy to reach
  • Very affordable accommodation at good standards in safe neighborhoods

best travel deals for october 2023

Mexico City is enormous and complicated, but the huge central tourist area is very nice and quite sophisticated. It’s more beautiful and interesting than many famous European cities, and it’s also easy to stay safe. Not many people outside the tourist industry speak English though, so if you don’t speak Spanish you’ll want to bring at least a menu translation app on your phone.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

  • October avg high: 73°F/23°C
  • October avg low: 55°F/13°C
  • October avg precip: 4.7″/11.8cm

Buenos Aires highlights

  • A vibrant and distinct culture unlike elsewhere in South America
  • Tango lessons and dinner shows
  • Probably the world’s best beef, which is also very affordable
  • Famous nightlife that goes on and on
  • Amazingly cheap as long as you know what the Blue Dollar is

best travel deals for october 2023

As of 2023, Argentina continues on with massive inflation, but as usual, it has accompanied a similar drop in the value of the currency. In fact, as of spring 2023, the currency has collapsed (once again) and the place is arguably the best value destination in the world. Part of the trick is to bring US dollars or Euros and exchange them at the street rate once you are there. You’ll get about double the official rate that you’d get through international banks or credit card transactions. Read up on the Argentina “blue dollar” or “blue rate” and you’ll unlock prices that are about half of what you’d pay otherwise.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$54 per night for two people

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • October avg high: 82°F/28°C
  • October avg low: 68°F/20°C

Rio de Janeiro highlights

  • Copacabana and Ipanema beach areas are lovely
  • Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf cable car are stunning to see in person
  • Famous beach culture where locals far outnumber tourists, even in high season
  • Exceptional food and drink culture at affordable prices
  • Surprisingly reasonably priced hotels in the nicer beach areas

best travel deals for october 2023

Another benefit about October in Rio is that it’s part of the dead zone for hotel prices so you’ll be able to get very good deals this month. This is an ideal season to shop around for big discounts at some of the larger beach hotels, which will often drop prices to come close to the smaller hotels a block or two inland during this month. Brazil had become somewhat expensive as of a few years ago, but it’s become weirdly cheap again. International chain hotels still charge a lot, but the local places are incredible bargains, especially in October.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$38 per night for two people

By the time October rolls around, everywhere in Europe that doesn’t border the Mediterranean is getting a bit too chilly to qualify as “great weather” but there are still some very good bargain choices left down south. If you are sure you want to head to Europe it’s probably better to pop over to our list of the best Europe destinations in October , which is now ranked from cheapest to most expensive so you can stay with cheaper places if you prefer.

Looking for some October beach weather? Check Europe’s cheapest beach cities for at least a few good options this month.

Lisbon, Portugal

  • October avg low: 58°F/14°C

Lisbon highlights

  • Castles, towers, and cathedrals, all conveniently in the historic center
  • Tram 28 – connects many of Lisbon’s tourist sights for €3
  • Elevador de Santa Justa – the famous and photogenic outdoor elevator
  • Great food at affordable prices for a large European city
  • Fado (famous local music) shows to go along with great meals

best travel deals for october 2023

Compared to elsewhere in Western Europe, Lisbon remains quite a bargain, with hotel rates that can be especially appealing during this time of year. Lisbon is also famous for having several of the highest rated hostels in the world, all with great locations, so you might look into a private room at one of those to save even a bit more money. The weather along Portugal’s southern coast, known as The Algarve, is also very pleasant for most of October, so combining a city trip and some time along the coast is a popular option for budget-oriented tourists.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$65 per night for two people

Barcelona, Spain

  • October avg high: 71°F/22°C
  • October avg precip: 3.6″/9.0cm

Barcelona highlights

  • Sagrada Familia cathedral and other Gaudi architectural highlights such as Park Guell
  • La Rambla pedestrian zone is one of Europe’s best
  • Sandy and pleasant beaches located within the city
  • Marina complex with great food, shopping, and things to do
  • Nightlife that is some of Europe’s best, especially in summer

best travel deals for october 2023

The low season for hotels in Barcelona doesn’t really begin until after Christmas, so you’ll want to look early for the best deal, but it shouldn’t be too challenging to get something at a good price. The food and drinks are generally quite reasonable all year round by European standards, and many attractions are free or very cheap, making this a bargain compared to its northern neighbors. Some of the top attractions in Barcelona are pretty expensive, but fortunately you can save quite a bit using a Go City Barcelona Pass .

  • October avg precip: 0.7″/1.7cm

Tenerife highlights

  • Long, sandy beaches and endless supply of hotel pools
  • A really nice atmosphere with very affordable food and drinks
  • Interesting and mellow nightlife with no loud mega clubs
  • Teide volcano and national park and cable car ride
  • Easy for those who don’t speak much Spanish

best travel deals for october 2023

October is an ideal month in Tenerife because most of the tourists are elsewhere and yet the weather is just amazing. The restaurants and bars here are dominated by expats and tourists, so you won’t see many exotic options. Los Cristianos is the most interesting town as a former fishing village, but Playa de las Americas is more modern with larger hotels to choose from. You’ll find some of the best beaches in October anywhere in the world here, and the weather is pretty much perfect. Starting in December, Tenerife starts filling up with northern Europeans, but October is still fairly quiet and even more affordable.

Athens, Greece

  • October avg high: 74°F/23°C
  • October avg low: 56°F/13°C

  • Acropolis Museum is new and amazing
  • Great food and famous drinks at affordable prices, mostly outdoor
  • Syntagma Square and its quirky ceremonies
  • Great shopping and outdoor flea markets

best travel deals for october 2023

The high season for hotels ends at the end of September so some good deals can be found, even at some of the nicer places. Many people like to spend a few days in Athens on their way to or from one of the Greek resort islands, and October is the last month of the year you’ll be able to pull that off as well, as ferry service cuts back to almost zero by the time November arrives. They still run regular ferries to the larger islands all year round, but honestly the beach clubs and many of the hotels are closed for the season at the end of October.

  • Great food at very reasonable prices, especially the breakfasts
  • Bargain hotels in central and tourist-friendly locations

best travel deals for october 2023

As of 2023, the Turkish currency has plummeted to levels not seen in years, and the country is very cheap for visitors once again. There has also been a bit of political unrest in Istanbul itself, but that generally doesn’t affect tourists as long as they don’t purposely get in the middle of it.

best travel deals for october 2023

You’ll be able to find great deals at the all-inclusive resorts along the beaches on either side of the main city area, or even better deals at some of the smaller boutique hotels in the heart of the historic district. There are few hostels but hotel prices can be shockingly low if you look around a bit, even at some of the nicer places with great locations. As with Istanbul (above), tourism is down and the currency is low, so finding bargains is easier than ever.

Northern Africa finally cools off enough in October to be nice. The list below is quite incomplete due to how few cities we cover in the region.

Fez, Morocco

  • October avg high: 75°F/24°C
  • October avg precip: 2.5″/6.3cm

Fez highlights

  • The Medina (Old City), which is very different from Marrakech
  • Visit a tannery (unforgettable sights and smells)
  • Ancient buildings and mosques, some are partly open to the public
  • Spice and food markets (amazing for photos)
  • Very reasonably priced hotels and local food

best travel deals for october 2023

Since summers can be brutal this time of year in Northern Africa, the high season for hotels actually begins in October. Still, prices are quite low here compared to Europe so you’ll find something within your budget for sure. Be warned that the lowest rungs on the quality scale might be lower than you are used to, so it could be worth paying a bit more for a nicer place.

Better still, hotel prices in Cairo don’t really start climbing until December, so you’ll have your choice of really nice hotels at bargain off-season rates. As long as you look for meals outside the fancy hotels you should be able to get by on a very low budget, but splurging on some nicer meals can be fun as well when prices for them are still quite low by comparison.

This town held a big international conference (COP 27) in November of 2022 with important attendees from all over the world. That should tell you something about the current state of security and stability, which is another reason hotels are no longer as cheap as they were a few years ago.

Middle East

October is quite a nice time for weather in most of the Middle East, so there are more destinations to consider than just the ones we cover here. Some areas do get an early winter starting in November, so this is really ideal for most places.

Amman, Jordan

  • October avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

Amman highlights

  • Gateway to Petra, Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum
  • Roman Theatre
  • The Citadel
  • cafes, bars, modern malls and art galleries
  • Very affordable hotels

best travel deals for october 2023

Amman is typically just a short stopover for people who are in the country to visit the desert of Wadi Rum and the Petra monuments, but it’s quite a pleasant place if you do a bit of research. Hotel prices are quite reasonable and food is cheap as well as long as you seek out places that aren’t built specifically for English-speaking tourists.

Beirut, Lebanon

  • October avg precip: 2.4″/6.0cm

Beirut highlights

  • National Museum of Beirut
  • Beirut Corniche (seaside pedestrian area)
  • Souks (market areas)
  • Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque
  • Lebanese food is arguably the best in the Middle East

best travel deals for october 2023

Hotels aren’t as cheap as you might expect in Beirut, but fortunately October marks the beginning of the low season so bargains should be easy to find, even at the last minute. During low season you might see really good deals at some of the places that would be out of your price range the rest of the year, so shop around.

NOTE: In 2023, Beirut is continuing to go through some challenges and is probably best avoided for the foreseeable future. The currency devalued early in 2023 so prices are jumping around as well.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$67 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$75 per night for two people

October is a tricky month for Asia. Nearly all of notoriously cheap Southeast Asia is having its final month of heavy rains, while cities to the north are already quite cool. There are still a few really good ones left over though.

Pokhara, Nepal

  • October avg precip: 2.2″/5.5cm

Pokhara highlights

  • Gateway to the Annapurna Circuit and some of the world’s best trekking
  • Devi’s Fall
  • Pleasant and quiet tourist town along a lake
  • Very cheap food and drinks as well as hotels

best travel deals for october 2023

Still, prices for just about everything in Pokhara are shockingly cheap compared to most of the rest of the world, so even if you are paying high-season hotel prices you’ll be able to get by on very little. They’ve been building new hotels like crazy in the town as well, so there’s likely to be an oversupply of vacant rooms for years to come. Bargain a bit and you should find a good deal even in October.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$23 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$80 per night for two people

  • October avg high: 89°F/31°C

Goa highlights

  • Excellent beaches, many extremely photogenic
  • Old Goa historic area is unusual even by Indian standards
  • Anjuna Flea Market – Famous hippie market and worth a visit
  • Great and cheap Portuguese-inspired cuisine
  • Famous beach parties and some of India’s cheapest alcohol

best travel deals for october 2023

If you’ve never been to Goa or to India itself, you’ll want to do some research before you book a holiday here. Goa is lovely and far less crowded than most everywhere else in India, yet it can also be frustrating for some newcomers. Also, hotels here come in a wide range of quality, and the absolute cheapest places are that cheap for a reason. It’s better to pay more for a place with good reviews than to chance a super cheap place based on price alone. Those on the lowest budgets can just show up without a reservation and shop around. Again, many hotels in Goa are not up to international standards, but there can be great bargains among the nicer hotels if they are half empty and you turn up in person.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$26 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$62 per night for two people

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia

  • October avg low: 77°F/25°C

Bali highlights

  • Great beaches and surfing in many areas, including the Kuta tourist zone
  • Stunning temples and monuments all over the island
  • Amazingly cheap hotels, with strangely cheap food and drinks
  • Fascinating Hindu culture and music
  • Excellent resorts in secluded area of Nusa Dua

best travel deals for october 2023

The traffic problem in Bali should ease off a bit in October as well, so it’s one of the better months for those hiring a driver for a tour of sites in different parts of the island. If you head to the smaller towns north of Ubud and on the northern coast you can find much smaller crowds as well. Bali is one of the best places to go in October as long as you do your research.

Bali was closed to tourism for most of the first two years of COVID and the travel industry suffered greatly. It’s now back open and deals are easy to find as they are still trying to get back to normal. Hotels in Bali are perhaps the best bargain in the world in 2023. We check the 3-star and 4-star prices of high-scoring hotels each year for this list and you can get a really nice place for next to nothing. As you can see below, good 4-star hotels start at US$24 (on weekdays) in October, and you can get a really amazing place for around US$50 per night.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$17 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$24 per night for two people

Hello Roger,

I’m interested why Puerto Vallarta is not on your list for either September or October. Rain ? Thanks,

September is part of the rainy season there, which can be very wet, but October is quite nice so I will add that to the October list now that you’ve reminded me. Thanks! -Roger

Hello Roger, I am originally from the US and have been traveling throughout Europe with my twin 7 year old daughters for the past three months and we are currently in England. As my business is able to be performed remotely and my girls take online classes, I am looking to travel and to stay in different countries for a month at a time from October to May while learning about the various cultures, in warmer climates preferably and as economically as possible. We do not have any restrictions on where to go and was wondering what advice and/or recommendations that you would give in our situation. Thank you in advance, and I love your articles.

That sounds like an amazing adventure you and the twins are on. Interestingly enough, I created much of this website on trips like that, with my longest trip being 3 years and 7 months mostly in Asia and Europe. I have “cheap destinations with great weather” articles for every month, so that would be one way to look for good candidates.

Since you want to go as economically as possible, your best choices are mostly in Asia and Latin America. Since you are already in Europe it would make the most sense to head towards Asia. One slightly tricky thing is that many of the best places for this have their rainy season lasting until late November, so October and November will have fewer choices. I spent over a year in a small tourist town in Turkey, which has a good climate in those months, but Turkey is kind of an odd place at the moment and some people are avoiding it.

You might consider Dubai for October and November, or at least part of that period. I’d think that you’d be able to find a fairly cheap serviced apartment or Airbnb if you were staying for a month like that. I like the place a lot and it’s quite easy to visit because all of the signs are in English (and Arabic) and almost everyone speaks English. I can help with more information if you need it.

In November there are some places in India were the rainy season is over or winding down, including in Goa. If you haven’t yet been to India I can give you some advice if you are interested. The main thing about India is that the cities are so insanely crowded that you won’t believe it, so it’s important to focus on small towns and rural areas.

Starting in December I’d focus on southeast Asia, and Thailand is by far the easiest place to start in and get oriented. Malaysia could also be good although it’s a bit more expensive although still a great bargain. If you haven’t been to Thailand it’s worth starting in Bangkok for at least a few days. I lived there for 3 straight months and it’s pretty overwhelming so most people prefer Chiang Mai or other smaller cities or even the islands. Chiang Mai has chilly evenings in winter, but still rather pleasant. It’s definitely the most popular place in Asia for people working on the internet. It’s incredibly cheap (I spent 3 months there as well) and it’s pretty easy because there are so many foreigners spending a few months at a time there. I can give you more advice on it if you like.

One last odd thing to know about is that April is actually the hottest month in almost all of southeast Asia and it can be unbearable because it’s always fairly humid as well. I’d probably head elsewhere in Asia or even back to Europe or the Middle East in April. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger

Thank you for this. I’ve added it to this article and the Europe-specific article. -Roger

Roger Thank-You so much I’m more concerned about having mostly hot dry weather with beautiful beaches than I am with cost as I will only be staying for about 8-9 days and I’ve never been to Mexico that and the ease of getting there of course. I def don’t want the DR. Been to Costa Rica and Cayman Islands. Is there another easy flight (besides Hawaii) place Oct 8-17 that fits this criteria or do you think Puerto Vallarta or Playa del Carmen are prob gonna be fine. Sorry I know it’s a weird time to travel and Thanks again I am looking forward to those sunsets

Aside from Hawaii, I think Mexico is your only good choice. Once you get into Central America and northern South America, the wet season tends to go until late November or early December. So the places in Mexico with a shorter wet season are almost certainly your best option. -Roger

Hello Roger I’m a little confused I’m reading the comments/suggestions for hot dry weather with beaches in October (I’ll be traveling around the 8-17) and at the top of the page it has Cancun listed although it says it’s rainy season it should still be dry most of the day (23 hrs it says ) but in the suggestions for Mexico you suggest Puerto Vallarta this time of year for hot dry area with nice beaches HELP? I do not mind all inclusives I want nice hot dry weather with sandy beaches , swimming pools , good food , maybe a couple of jet skis or quads we can always book an interesting tour or trip into the nearby town. Thank-You so much this info is so helpful. We are looking to go to Mexico for convenience from Seattle area unless you’ve got another suggestion.

Both Cancun and Puerto Vallarta are pretty good places in October, as long as you realize that there will probably be the occasional downpour on many afternoons, especially in Cancun. The room rates reflect the off-season status so you can get a better resort for less money than in, say, January.

Personally, I prefer Puerto Vallarta to Cancun by a bit, although I also really like Playa del Carmen and I’ve been hearing great things about Tulum’s recent growth spurt. I need to add Puerto Vallarta to this list because October tends to be fairly dry so the weather is pretty much perfect. And as a resident of Seattle you are aware that Pacific storms are extremely rare, at least compared to Caribbean storms.

And being honest, those places are fairly interchangeable. People mostly go there to enjoy the weather and a specific hotel and beach. And of course on the west coast you get gorgeous sunsets, which is another point in its favor. For me it’s mostly about getting there. From Seattle it should be much cheaper and a few hours faster to fly to Puerto Vallarta than Cancun, so I’d head to PV if I were you. I hope this helps. -Roger

How come you say nothing about Israel? It have a great weather in October Lots of stuff to see and lots of things to do!

I used to list Tel Aviv on some of these lists, but it’s actually become too expensive to qualify as a “cheap destination” for these lists. The focus of these lists is to point out places that are affordable once you get there, and some people pointed out that Tel Aviv doesn’t really fit by that standard. It’s a gray area so maybe I’ll add it back for the next year edition. Thank you for mentioning it. -Roger

Hi, Rogar Wade It’s amazing article in in my eyes. Thanks for giving effective information. There are much more information that i needed. I have a question this is, Information of this weather, Is it accurate?

We get the weather estimates from the most official sources we could, so they should be pretty accurate. That said, they are averages and the actual weather can obviously be a bit warmer or cooler or wetter or dryer. -Roger

hey roger.15-20 oct. trip for dubai and abu dhabi. is is be ok to be there at that time. how will weather .suggest me.max 7 days trip

October in Dubai and Abu Dhabi should be very nice as the summer heat has cooled off to the point that you can actually spend time outside, especially in the mornings and evenings. I’m not sure what else you are asking for. -Roger

Hi Roger, Thanks for your response. Very helpful. It seems like the Chinese airlines are okay when leaving from mainland China, but a different story when leavin^ America. The ratings are low across the board. It would be my third time going to Seoul, but my friend’s first time and trying not to sour the experience right out the gate. I will pass on these suggestions though. Will let you know what we decide.

Thanks again

Hi Roger, Fantastic article. Myself, my sister and a friend were planning on going to Seoul this October. We have been looking at flights for months and the prices are either extremely cheap for suspect airlines or charging First Class Prices for Economy seats. We decided to maybe switch gears and go somewhere else that would get us there cheaper and give us more bang for our buck. We would be leaving from NYC and have wiggle room between October 19th and November 2nd. We all would prefer somewhere not cold and that allows us to make use of public transportation ie. subway, train and/ or bus. Thank youfor any help

Thank you. First off, I wonder about those suspect airlines. I went to Seoul for the first time last year and then to four different places in mainland China. I flew Singapore from LAX to Seoul, but after that I flew China Southern and a couple other Chinese airlines the rest of the way and I was very impressed by the service. There are cheap Russian airlines and maybe from a few other countries where I would at least look up the data and reviews before booking, but I would happily fly the major Chinese airlines if they offer really good fares. Still, Seoul will be getting a bit chilly in late October and there are plenty of other great options over there.

As you’ve discovered, most major destinations in Asia are having their rainy season in October. I think my top choice of places with good weather would be Bali, which couldn’t be more different from Seoul. It’s slightly below the equator so it’s warm every day of the year, and in late October you’d probably only get a couple of short rainstorms in a week. It’s also low season there so you get even better value than normal. As long as you don’t spend too much time in the Kuta Beach area (always packed with partying Australians), then Bali is really a wonderful destination with great hotels starting well under US$100 per night.

If you are thinking more of a city vacation then I would consider Lisbon, Madrid, and Barcelona as great choices, especially from NYC. October is ideal in those places as long as you don’t plan on sunbathing because the summer crowds have thinned out and yet it’s still pleasantly warm. Let me know if any of these ideas sound good and I’m happy to help more, or if I’m off base let me know and I’ll try again. -Roger

The Best Ways to Spend Your Points and Miles in October 2023

By Ramsey Qubein

The Best Points and Miles Travel Deals in October 2023

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

It’s never too soon to start making those holiday travel plans or even decide on a winter vacation to escape the cold. If you’ve been saving up points and miles to make the trip easier, now is the time to put them to work for you.

This October, fall promotions, bonus points, and even some upcoming changes to elite status should have you laser-focused on getting the most value from what’s in your wallet (and your loyalty program balance). These are the deals to look for this month as you start booking your next trip.

Discounted awards

Each month, Air France and KLM put many of their redemption flights on sale, but the destinations and number of miles regularly change. This month’s Flying Blue Promo Rewards start as low as 3,750 miles each way for an intra-European award flight and 11,250 miles for a long-haul flight from cities like Chicago and Montreal to Europe . These are for flights between now and the end of March, but you’ll have to act fast and make a reservation in October. If you need Flying Blue miles, the program is a transfer partner with all the major credit card points currencies like American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Virgin Atlantic has its own discounted awards available through the end of the year, shaving as much as 25 percent off the cost of an award. The savings are only available for flights operated by Virgin Atlantic planes. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points are easy to accrue since the frequent flier program, like Flying Blue, is a partner of major credit card programs.

Lufthansa and its Miles & More program have a similar offer for discounted awards that must be booked by the end of October (eligible for travel through the end of February). These include discounts for as much as half off both intra-European and long-haul awards, but the loyalty program does not partner with any credit card transfer programs , so you’ll have to earn them the hard way.

Air France

Use your points and miles to book Air France business class at promotional rates.

Bonus points

For every two nights you stay at an IHG One Rewards hotel between October 12 and the end of the year, you’ll earn 2,000 bonus points. Be sure to register before your first hotel visit . This includes stays at some of its new hotels like Hotel Indigo Galapagos , Regent Hong Kong and the Kimpton Aysla Mallorca in Spain.

Stay with an Accor property between now and December 20 to earn more bonus points. On your first stay of at least two nights, you earn 500 points; your next stay scores 2,500 points. The third stay of at least two nights earns 3,000 more points. You’ll need to register for the promotion and reserve your stay by October 17.

On the credit card front, if you have the Chase Freedom or Chase Freedom Flex cards , you’re probably familiar with its quarterly bonus points categories. These change throughout the year, and in time for holiday shopping , the bonus can be particularly lucrative. Between now and the end of December, you can earn 5x points per dollar spent when using PayPal, shopping at wholesale clubs, or donating to charity—but you’ll need to activate the offer in your Chase account to be eligible.

Limited-time credit card perks

In honor of its Member Week (October 9–13), American Express is offering a $25 discount on restaurant bills of at least $75 when dining with Resy. Other benefits during this special week include an $80 credit for eligible cardmembers when making a reservation at Hilton.com for at least $200. Delta-branded American Express cardholders can also earn travel credits with the airline when making an international reservation with the card during Member Week.

Amex Offers, accessible when logging into your American Express account, give regular bonuses and discounts. They are targeted offers, however, so what one cardholder is offered may differ from another. Among the offers: a $150 rebate when spending at least $750 on a stay at a Park Hyatt hotel between now and Dec. 15. Another offer awards cardholders with a $75 rebate after spending at least $300 with IHG One Rewards brands like InterContinental and Kimpton. During the same timeframe, spend at least $300 with Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and you can receive a $100 rebate to your Amex card. Be sure to register for all of these offers before traveling.

Chase has its own spending bonuses, but as with Amex, these are targeted offers and you’ll want to check if you are eligible. You can do this by logging into your Chase account or checking directly on this page . Among the spending bonuses are the ability to earn 7x points at gas stations and 5x points on dining and via Amazon when using the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card . Those with The World of Hyatt Credit Card can unlock 5x points at gas stations, grocery stores, and Amazon this fall, too. Both bonuses, among others (check your card) are available through Dec. 31.

Watch for changes and competitor status match offers

Delta and American Express shocked the traveling public with major changes to the elite program and credit card partnership. If you’re considering other options, both Alaska and JetBlue are dangling the carrot to earn your business with elite status matches. These will give you equal (or even higher) status than what you had with Delta just by filling out a form.

JetBlue’s offer for its top-tier Mosaic status even includes bonus TrueBlue points, six one-way Mint upgrades, and four Blade helicopter transfers into Manhattan. If you are sticking it out with Delta, keep in mind you’ll need to spend more with the airline or on its credit cards to achieve elite status starting in 2024. Also, if you have The Platinum Card from American Express or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card, your visits to the Sky Club are now restricted to six or ten times a year, respectively.

Best places to travel in October

Valencia, Spain

1.  Valencia, Spain

Valencia might’ve been named World Design Capital back in 2022, but it’s still a darn dazzling place.  The aesthetically brilliant southeastern Spanish port city is home to fantastic art museums, contemporary galleries and dazzling architecture. Explore the stark white buildings at the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, including the uncannily stormtrooper-helmet-esque Palau de les Arts opera house and wander the modernist El Cabanyal barrio, with its tiled facades.

Philippines

2.  Philippines

Adventure travel, including diving, has grown in popularity over recent years, and the Philippines’ 7,000 islands get top marks for underwater adventures. Head to Palawan’s Coron Bay for mind-blowing wreck diving, while Anilao is one of the world’s best spots for biodiversity, meaning you might just see something that’s not even been named yet. More experienced divers can also try blackwater diving here, where you’re tethered to a boat line in the pitch-black ocean at night, with a torch, for an altogether more space-like experience. Visit once the rainy season’s out of the way, in the second half of October, to make the most of its beautiful beaches. Food more your jam? As Filipino cuisine takes root in global cities like New York and London, maybe it’s time to go eat the good stuff at the source, from vibrant ube (purple yam) ice cream to Lechon (roast suckling pig).

Average temp in October: 27C/82F

Bhutan

3.  Bhutan

With more than 70 percent of its land covered by forest, this Buddhist kingdom is the world’s only carbon-negative country, absorbing far more of the stuff than it produces. Travel is tightly controlled to make sure tourism remains low-impact, so it isn’t cheap—though the $200-a-day fee to be there includes all your accommodation, food and a guide (which is worth it because there’s a mythical story behind pretty much everything you encounter here). Go to get lost in pristine nature, breathe in lungfuls of clean Himalayan air and feel extra smug knowing you’re eating right too.

Average temp in October: 22C/72F

Bosnia and Herzegovina

4.  Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summers in Bosnia and Herzegovina are mighty hot, and the winters get pretty darn cold. You can do the maths from there, and October might be the best time to visit this remarkable country. The number of tourists drops dramatically, meaning more space to wander the enchanting old towns of Sarajevo, Mostar and the rest. Travnik’s charming collection of mosques sparkles a little brighter, while Banja Luka cements its spot as the country’s best night out. More and more people are waking up to the magic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, so make a point of visiting this October to see for yourself.

Average temp in October: 11C/52F

New Mexico

5.  New Mexico

There is more to New Mexico than desert and a certain Netflix show. Every October,  Albuquerque  hosts its eye-popping International Balloon Fiesta, where you can spot hundreds of technicolour hot air balloons making their spectacular ascent. Maybe it is the seemingly endless skies and epic sunrises that make it a prime location, but it has become the world’s largest balloon festival and the most photographed event on Earth. Make time to visit  Santa Fe , in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, for a mix of Spanish colonial architecture and earth-coloured historic adobe neighbourhoods, plus a comprehensive Georgia O'Keeffe Museum dedicated to her artistic legacy and American modernism.

Timisoara, Romania

6.  Timisoara, Romania

This under-the-radar city, with its large public squares, leafy gardens and restored pastel-painted art nouveau architecture, makes an attractive city break that’s a far cry from the tower blocks other Romanian cities are known for. Timisoara was Romania's ‘first free city’, home of the country’s 1989 revolution to overthrow the communist dictatorship (brush up on the history at the Museum of the 1989 Revolution). Its independent spark lives on in live music venues, from intimate jazz bars to the grand opera house.

Average temp in October: 19C/66F

San Francisco

7.  San Francisco

San Francisco has never been one to conform, even to weather norms: for warm, sunny SF days, you’re better off visiting in spring and fall rather than summer. Time your visit for October, so once you’re done with the classics— Golden Gate Bridge ,  Alcatraz  and the adorably blubbery sea lions at  Pier 39 —you can soak up the vibes at the  Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival . In true independent San Francisco spirit, the festival is entirely non-commercial (no ads or sponsorship banners), free to visit and BYOB. Held in the  Golden Gate Park , it’s become a beloved SF institution since it was first held in 2001 and has attracted acts including Emmylou Harris and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant.

Average temp in October: 14C/57F

Namibia

8.  Namibia

Namibia has been growing in popularity as a destination since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent their honeymoon there last year, and the boom in bookings has sparked a flurry of new lodge openings. Some of the best are making the most of the country’s stargazing opportunities in and around Africa’s only International Dark Sky Reserve (such as the sleek & Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, with a resident astronomer, and Kwessi Dunes, with open-roofed stargazing rooms in each of its chalets). It’s possible to camp in the reserve too, but book in advance as the limited spaces tend to fill up fast.

9.  Toronto

Toronto is one of the most exciting cities on the planet, with thrilling nightlife nestled next to gourmet restaurants and some of the finest live music venues on the continent. What makes October the perfect time to visit? Hockey, that’s what. Sure, Maple Leafs fans have suffered more than enough misery over the last half decade-plus, but the regular season isn’t a problem these days. The 2022 Toronto Maple Leafs season gets underway with an away game against Montreal Canadiens on October 12, with the home opener coming the next night against Washington Capitals. Don’t expect to get tickets, but watching a game in a Toronto bar is a bucket list experience.

NYC

10.  NYC

It’s pretty much always a good time to visit NYC—at  Christmas , you get the snow and ubiquitous festive decorations. In spring, you get the  Central Park  cherry blossom. In summer, you get the long evenings in the feelgood heat, and then fall brings a burnt amber hue to everything. This year, save it for  Halloween  when the annual  Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade  kicks off in Manhattan, shedding NYC’s pooches in a ghoulish new light as pups and their owners come dressed in ever-more outlandish costumes.

10 Best Places to Travel in October

Prepare yourself for a month of spirited traditions and natural transformation..

  • Copy Link copied

Ah, October. The Goldilocks time to travel, when everything’s just right. Weather, crowds, and prices are all moderate, and the only thing over the top is the schedule of events and festivals.

We’ve scoured the world for the best this month, whether you want to chop your way through the home of karate, immerse yourself in an alternative Day of the Dead, or even tackle some hikes in an unexpected European mountain range. Here are 10 top places to travel in October.

1. Arcadia, Greece

Come to Greece in October and visit Dimitsana, one of the villages found in Arcadia.

October is great for . . . an alternative outdoor vacation in the heart of the Mediterranean.

To Renaissance writers, the Arcadian ideal was a shorthand for earthly paradise. To modern travelers, the IRL Arcadia can offer much of what they dreamed, located in a quiet corner of Greece in the Peloponnese that’s easily overlooked by those rushing to fly and flop on one of its many islands.

Pause, though, and dawdle on the mainland and you’ll be rewarded by a different vision of the country. Come here in fall to go mountain biking, horse riding, or even mushroom foraging; the Menalon Trail here was the first in Greece to earn “leading quality” status from the European Ramblers’ Association, a mark not only of its high-caliber maintenance but also its sustainable impact on local communities. Follow its almost five-mile length via shepherds’ tracks and steep valleys, and you’ll see why the ancient Greeks considered this area the home turf of Pan, the untameable god of the wild.

There’s ample centuries-old human history here, too, whether cliffside monasteries Prodoromos and Philosophos that date back to the Byzantine era or villages like Bytina and Dimitsana. And don’t leave without picking up a jar of fir-tree honey, a signature product of this region thanks to the millennia-old fir forests that cover the 6,500-foot-high Mount Mainalo.

Where to stay: Manna

Come to this mountain retreat for a Greek riff on wellness, surrounded by fresh mountain air in a property originally built as a sanatorium in the 1920s and rebooted as a 32-room boutique hotel that opens this fall.

How to get to Athens

If you can, hop on the affordably priced Fifth Freedom flight that Emirates operates between New York and Athens—those throwbacks are always a bargain—or try the Delta service from Atlanta or American from Chicago, both of which are seasonal and end this month. It’s a 2.5-hour drive to the Peloponnese from there.

Día de los Muertos has its roots in Mexico, and is celebrated to honor the lives of ancestors and cycle of life and death.

2. San Antonio, Texas

October is great for . . . celebrating border culture, both haunted and hungry..

Don’t assume you need to cross the border to immerse yourself in a swirling, impactful celebration of Dia de los Muertos—the largest such gathering stateside is right here, a nod to San Antonio ’s close cultural and geographical connections to Mexico .

For two days, October 28–29, expect the city to celebrate the afterlife via a special Day of the Dead river parade and the usual trappings of a citywide festival—think live music and entertainment, food and craft stalls plus a huge, open altar exhibition. Expect bunches of marigolds ( cempasúchil ), paper cutouts, and the chance to nibble on pan de muerto.

The Tasting Texas Wine & Food Festival coincides with this celebration, running on Maverick Plaza from October 26 to 29, which includes special dinners at restaurants around the city as well as stand-alone events like Southern Hospitality, a chance to graze buffet-style on the best the city’s chefs have to offer.

Where to stay: Thompson Riverwalk

  • Book now: Thompson Riverwalk

The two-year-old, 162-room hotel, housed in a 20-story building right above the River Walk in the emerging Arts District has two noteworthy F&B spots—a swanky restaurant by local chef, and James Beard finalist, Steve McHugh, and a casual rooftop restaurant for maximum views, the Moon’s Daughters.

How to get to San Antonio

There’s direct service from the West Coast on AA, Delta, and Southwest, or try JetBlue or United from the Tri-State area.

3. Dominica

October is great for . . . celebrating the Caribbean’s musical heritage. For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, October 27–29 will mark the return of the country’s World Creole Festival . Anchored by Windsor Park Stadium in the capital, Roseau, it’s intended to champion music indigenous to this island, which also has influences from both Great Britain and France. It caps Creole heritage month and draws more than 10,000 visitors from around the globe to hear music like bouyon, which emerged on the island in the 1980s and has become popular across the entire Caribbean region.

While you’re here, don’t miss the local rum, which comes spiked with bois bandé, a local bark said to have aphrodisiac qualities. Also, take time to loll in the hot springs around Wotten Waven—a dip or two here is said to be skin-rejuvenating.

Where to stay: Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort

  • Book now: Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort

Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort is an unusual all-inclusive option, as its rates don’t just bundle F&B; activities like lionfish catching and hikes to the likes of Trafalgar Falls and Titou Gorge are also gratis.

How to get to Dominica

American Airlines services Dominica nonstop from MIA at least twice weekly this month, a new connection that’s unlocked the island for a quick weekend getaway.

Visit Okinawa and you can see sights like Shuri Castle in Naha.

4. Okinawa, Japan

October is great for . . . experiencing a martial art in its spiritual home.

In Japan ’s tropical answer to Hawai‘i, October 25 is Karate Day or heiwa no bu , the martial art of peace. The sport is said to have originated here, when the islands were an independent kingdom for several centuries apart from the Chrysanthemum throne, and there are more than 400 dojos on the main island now. Come to learn a few moves from the free demos all along Kokusai Street in the capital of Naha.

Even better, this is the ideal time to be outdoors here, as the temps hover comfortably in the high 70s or low 80s; it’s the end of the beach season, so you can find a few secluded sand spits somewhere on one of the 6,000-plus islands that comprise this corner of the country. Take a one-hour boat ride from Naha for a day trip to Aharen Beach.

Make sure to stay up late, too, for some impressive live music in the venues around the island. Thanks to the longtime U.S. military base here, the tropical island cluster has become the hard rock hub of the country, producing a slew of its best riff-strikers like metal legends Taia.

Where to stay: Halekulani Okinawa Resort

  • Book now: Halekulani Okinawa Resort

This 360-room outpost of the luxe Hawai‘i hotel was one of the first true high-end properties to open here in some time when it debuted in summer 2019. Japan’s pandemic-induced border closures have kept it as pristine as it was within weeks of opening.

How to get to Okinawa

Head to HND, the handier, international hub in Tokyo that has elbowed aside onetime focus NRT: Look for flights there from JFK on ANA or JAL, plus LAX on American, among others. The flight time is just under three hours from there to Okinawa.

White bear searching for salmon in river, Pacific Coast, BC, Canada

Sonora Island is within the Great Bear Rainforest, a temperate rain forest in British Columbia.

5. Sonora Island, British Columbia

October is great for . . . spawning salmon and the grizzlies that love them.

For the first two weeks of this month, you can still arrange a grizzly bear tour and see these beasts roaming their natural habitat, snacking at will on a salmon or two. Half of Canada’s entire population of grizzlies lives in B.C., which vastly increases your chance to spot them; expect to see adults and cubs in ample numbers.

Those salmon are a stand-alone appeal for humans, too: The chilly rivers teem with spawning fish through the beginning of this month, whether coho, steelhead, or pink—all five main species pass through the waters here. Stand on the waterside and watch with awe, or head out on a boat for a catch-and-release fishing session on the river.

Where to stay: Sonora Resort

  • Book now: Sonora Resort

Sonora Resort is a glamorous ranch-style hotel set in a rugged countryside ideal for any get-up-and-go traveler with its own indoor tennis court, nine-hole putting green, and fly fishing ponds. Its 88 rooms are spread through a dozen, widely distributed lodges, maximizing both privacy and connection to nature.

How to get to Sonora Island

The closest hub is Vancouver, which has nonstop service from the East Coast on JetBlue and Air Canada, and flights from LAX and ORD, too on American and United. From there, the best connection is a 50-minute puddle jumper—book a seat with the hotel’s reservations team and fight for a seat with the best chance of taking a few snaps of the jaw-dropping views en route.

Sigatoka river in Viti Levu, FIji Islands

Viti Levu is Fiji’s largest island.

6. Viti Levu, Fiji

October is great for . . . glorious weather and national celebrations.

Sure, the weather is warm here this month—expect it to hover around 80 degrees during the day, with much lower humidity than in the summer—and the rainfall low before the wet season properly starts. Come this month, though, for a chance to immerse yourself in the country’s culture, as it celebrates Fiji Day on October 10.

This marks the date when the nation emerged from British rule in 1970, and locals will dress up in period costumes dating back to the 1870s, when it was first annexed on October 10, 1874, to reenact the Deed of Cessation. There is a military parade—brace yourself for some ear-splitting cannon blasts—as well as a celebration of the dual cultures that dominate Fiji today: native Fijian and Indian. Expect market stalls filled with headpieces and sarongs, plus lots of music and parades.

Where to stay: Nanuku Resort Fiji

  • Book now: Nanuku Resort Fiji

The 500-acre private estate sits on the south coast of Viti Levu, the largest of the 300 or so islands in this nation, and operates much like a safari camp on a luxe all-inclusive basis. Its sustainability efforts, under the Batiwai Project umbrella, are world class.

How to get to Viti Levu

Head to Fiji on the country’s national carrier with direct flights to Nadi, the main airport, from LAX and SFO.

The Mohawk Trail is more than 60 miles long and includes stops like Western Gateway Heritage State Park and Natural Bridge State Park.

7. Western Massachusetts

October is great for . . . the ultimate fall foliage adventure.

Sure, travelers may assume the only place worth visiting in Massachusetts in October is Salem, but why not head a little west instead and shuck off the shuddery associations? Better to focus on some of the leaves on the slopes of the Berkshires: Usually, it’s at peak for the first couple of weeks this month, as the oaks, maples, and more change colors before carpeting the ground. The best route to follow is the Mohawk Trail , a 63-mile track taking in 50,000 acres of state parks and forest that opened in 1914, the first such scenic trail in the region.

On the first Sunday of the month, North Adams hosts a downtown parade celebrating the season. Don’t worry if you can’t make it that weekend: You can still hike the 14-mile or so Ashuwillticook Rail Trail or the shorter round trip of 5 miles on the Keystone Arch Bridges Trail; both once carried trains but have now been repurposed for walkers. Stop off, too, at Mass MOCA , the installation-heavy museum en route, as well as the so-called Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, right at the end of its blooming season heavy with dahlias, roses, and asters.

Where to stay: Warfield House Inn

  • Book now: Warfield House Inn

The family-owned, 14-room property in Charlemont is on its own 180-acre mountaintop preserve and working farm. During the summer it’s renowned as a wedding venue, but by fall it’s well suited for a hike around the grounds.

How to get to Western Massachusetts

There’s an airport in Bradley, Connecticut, served by Frontier from Atlanta, Breeze from Fort Myers and Raleigh-Durham, and several other low-cost carriers. For Northeasterners, Amtrak’s service to Springfield or Pittsfield is the handiest.

Sunset over White Pine Range of Mountains in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in White Pine County outside Ely, Nevada

While in Ely, travelers can visit the nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

October is great for . . . a star trek.

On October 14, 2023, the biggest celestial event of the year will take place, a solar eclipse—and the first of its kind in 11 years. It’s what’s called an annular eclipse, where the moon is just far enough from the Earth that it doesn’t entirely obscure the sun, but rather creates a dazzling ring of fire effect as it moves. It will be visible in much of the western USA, but one of the best spots to enjoy it will be Ely, Nevada, which sits directly in the path of totality—there, the eclipse will last for around 3.5 minutes starting from 9:24 a.m.

The area is celebrating its status as an eclipse spotter’s favorite via a five-day Ring of Fire Eclipse Festival , which starts on October 11. It will feature UFO events at the local White Pine Museum and the chance to ride the Nevada Northern Railway to view the eclipse, accompanied by NASA-affiliated interpreters.

Where to stay: Hotel Nevada

  • Book now: Hotel Nevada

Dating back to 1929, this 64-room property was a celebrity favorite as it has hosted guests like actor Jimmy Stewart, singer Charlie Rich, and actress Ann Rutherford. It has just undergone a much-needed upgrade after a recent renovation.

How to get to rural Nevada

The easiest option for most visitors is Salt Lake City airport in Utah, a 3.5-hour drive away—it’s one of Delta’s main hubs, and the carrier connects it to most major cities across the country. If you’d rather not drive that far, check the once-daily commercial flight from SLC to EKO, operated by Delta subsidiary Skywest.

Sunrise over Rockford Common in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire

England’s New Forest National Park covers more than 200 square miles.

9. London, United Kingdom

October is great for . . . classic cocktails and country walks.

Instead of the New England countryside, consider heading to England’s New Forest this fall. The name is a misnomer, an almost millennium-long holdover from William the Conqueror’s time, who called it the Nova Foresta. Today, it’s one of the largest undeveloped tracts of pasture and forest in the entire country at more than 71,000 acres. There are some 140 trails and walks quilting the countryside from which you can enjoy the fall colors: Don’t miss the quarter-mile-long Knightwood Oak trail, named after a redwood-like oak tree at its heart whose trunk has a 24-foot circumference.

Head back to the capital for London Cocktail Week, October 12–22, which hits its 13th year in 2023. Pick up a wristband for £15 (around US$19), and then ricochet between more than 300 bars in the capital, where you’ll score cut-price drinks as an LCW insider when you flash that band. Expect the same assortment as last year, including master classes, special pop-up venues, and chances to meet master distillers.

Where to stay: Chewton Glen

  • Book now: Chewton Glen

Did someone say tree house? There are 72 standard rooms here, but the real appeal is the 14 spots that allow you to crash amid the canopies 35 feet above the ground, indulging your inner kid.

How to get to London

There are budget carriers like Norse and Play, offering cut-price no-frills trips from the East Coast. Also consider JetBlue’s new service from BOS and JFK—there’s even a daytime flight from the latter, which means you don’t need to worry about struggling for shut-eye on a red-eye.

The Negev is a desert and semidesert region of southern Israel.

October is great for . . . indie culture in an alternative setting.

Come in the first week of the month to enjoy the four-day Tamar Festival , which runs October 2–6 and coincides with the joyous festival of Sukkot. Its name, which means “date,” is intended to symbolize the end of the harvest season, and the eclectic programming showcases creatives of all kinds at several sites at the foot of Mount Masada. Concerts take place in the evening and at sunrise.

From October 12 to 14, indie music festival InDnegev is held out in the wilds of the Negev Desert in the country’s southern reaches. Think of it as the Middle Eastern answer to Glastonbury or Woodstock, a chance to enjoy more than 100 shows featuring both well-known names and upcoming performers. It started in 2007 and has grown ever since, drawing around 12,000 fans each year. The lineup in 2022 included Afghan Whigs and Tess Parks, as well as local talents like Evyatar Banai and Shlomi Shaban.

Where to stay: The Beresheet Hotel

  • Book now: The Beresheet Hotel

This 111-room five-star resort sits right in the Negev Desert, overlooking the Ramon Crater, the 24-mile-long so-called erosion cirque, created millions of years ago when this land was under water—take a thrilling Jeep tour to see it up close.

How to get to Israel

It’s easy to reach Israel from American’s main hubs, with flights on Delta, El-Al, and United from Miami, Los Angeles, NYC, and San Francisco.

Best places to visit in october 2024.

Fall is here, and in many regions the leaves have changed and are ready for their close-up. While in some destinations you'll still have to contend with foliage-seeking tourists, other top getaways in October offer a bit more breathing room after the departure of summer crowds. Taking into account these factors, as well as expert opinion, traveler sentiment and array of sights (among other details), U.S. News chose the best places to visit in October. Have a favorite? Vote below to influence next year's list.

Yellowstone National Park

Zion national park, british virgin islands, serengeti national park, buenos aires, black forest, asheville, nc, acadia national park.

best travel deals for october 2023

If "White Lotus" piqued your interest in a Sicilian getaway, but you don't quite have the budget to splurge, plan a trip for October when the summer tourists have gone home. At the start of the offseason, hotel rates in this Italian paradise can drop to almost half of their peak prices. You'll still be able to squeeze in some of the season's last beach days as temperatures typically remain in the 70s. What's more, the streets are likely to be less crowded, so you can easily spend your days sauntering through the region's quaint villages and sampling exquisite Mediterranean cuisine.

best travel deals for october 2023

If you can handle declining temps (think: 40s and 50s), you'll be rewarded with a wonderful time of year to visit Yellowstone National Park. October sees far fewer visitors than peak summer months, which means you'll encounter less traffic and won't have to jostle for a spot at top attractions like Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring. Plus, you might catch the tail end of elk rutting season and hear their otherworldly bugling. This national park's roads close for the season in November, but keep in mind that some lodging options close earlier, so book your accommodations early.

Pleasant weather, more manageable crowds and fall foliage – what's not to love about Zion National Park in October? Daytime temperatures in the 70s will keep you comfortable for activities like hiking and rock climbing, but pack layers and prepare for cooler temperatures in sunless hiking spots like the Narrows. What's more, leaf peepers won't want to miss taking the Canyon Overlook trail to catch a glimpse of the autumn colors. While fewer travelers tend to visit this national park in October than the summer months, you'll want to avoid peak times like fall break.

Beat the winter holiday rush with an autumn trip to the British Virgin Islands. Though October falls in the middle of the rainy season, this typically means brief squalls rather than days full of rain, and low season travel will mean fewer tourists and great rates on accommodations. The Moorings Interline Regatta also takes place in October, delighting sailors and landlubbers alike with its exhilarating sailboat races and nightly parties. However, these great rewards do come with a bit of risk, as well. Since this island lies in the hurricane belt, you may want to consider travel insurance for a fall trip here.

Summer is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit Iceland's capital, so an October visit will give you access to top sights sans crowds. Take in the city's quirky architecture like Hallgrímskirkja and the Harpa concert hall on a free walking tour before grabbing a craft beer or a bowl of fiskisúpa (fish soup). Temperatures may hover in the 40s, but the area's hot springs and geothermal pools will warm you right up. Plus, as a trade-off for shorter days and cooler weather, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the northern lights this time of year.

October falls within the Southern Hemisphere's spring season, so expect to enjoy long, sunny days and beautiful blooming jacarandas during an October visit to Sydney. Average daytime temperatures rest in the 70s this time of year, meaning you can comfortably check out Sydney Harbour's most famous landmark , the Sydney Opera House, and tour the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. This is also a perfect time to stroll along the coastal walk between the iconic Bondi and Coogee beaches. What's more, October is when two of Sydney's most popular events – the Night Noodle Markets and Sculpture by the Sea – occur.

Serengeti National Park's wildlife-viewing opportunities are incomparable, and visiting in October at the end of its dry season offers certain benefits. October is one of the Tanzanian park's warmest months, with average temperatures sitting in the low 80s. And while you might encounter a few short rain showers toward the end of the month, October is generally still quite dry, meaning you'll find fewer mosquitos and sparse vegetation – which makes it easier to spot animals – during game drives. The best place to catch a glimpse of migrating herds this time of year is in the Northern Serengeti.

Buenos Aires' spring shoulder season promises mild weather and moderate crowds – ideal conditions for exploring this Argentinian capital's charming neighborhoods. Come October, chic Palermo's stately trees, gardens and parks are at their finest, while 70-degree temperatures breathe new life into San Telmo's street fairs and alfresco restaurants. With the money you save on accommodations by avoiding peak tourist season, buy tickets to an opera at Colón Theater, take in a tango show or wine and dine at a parrilla (steakhouse).

Japan may be famous for its spring cherry blossoms, but Kyoto's many beautiful shrines, temples and pavilions shine even brighter among the orange- and red-hued trees that begin to dot the city in October. Strolling the tree-lined Philosopher's Path or taking in the leafy views from the Kiyomizu-dera Temple's verandah will leave you with unforgettable memories of this Japanese city. Plus, if you time your visit around October 22, you can catch two popular festivals, the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages) and the Kurama no Hi Matsuri (Kurama Fire Festival).

For smaller crowds and more affordable accommodations and airfare, consider a tropical escape to Aruba in October. During this low season month, hotels slash their prices up to 50%. Plus, the island experiences some of its warmest weather (think: daytime temps in the high 80s) come October, so you can stretch out and enjoy various water sports on popular white sand shores like Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. Though October can be rainy, showers tend to be brief, leaving plenty of time for fun in the sun. Plus, since Aruba sits below the hurricane belt, storms here are unlikely.

While Germany's Bavaria region and its raucous Oktoberfest celebrations garner a lot of attention every fall, the Black Forest in southwestern Germany offers a quieter escape into nature. Despite its many evergreens, the Black Forest is one of the best destinations in the country for fall foliage. Take in the colors while driving along the Black Forest High Road, riding the Feldberg cableway or boating on Lake Schluchsee. Though you may encounter rain, the Black Forest (the birthplace of Grimm's Fairy Tales), offers plenty of enchanting villages and cozy towns to duck into.

October falls at the end of this Indonesian island's peak dry season, meaning you can enjoy great weather for most of the month without the crowds and high accommodation rates of the busier summer months. Daytime temperatures hover in the high 80s, providing ideal conditions for swimming, surfing and sunbathing at beaches like those in Padang Padang and Sanur. Families on fall break will also enjoy cooling off at the Waterbom Bali water park. What's more, tourist hot spots like Uluwatu Temple and Tanah Lot Temple are less likely to be packed in October, making it a great time for sightseeing.

As one of the first months without summer tourists, and the final one before chilly temperatures arrive in earnest, October in Lyon is a prime time to visit. Travelers can score dinner reservations and settle in for autumnal feasting in France's third largest city, which is widely celebrated for its cuisine. A stroll through Vieux-Lyon, the city's picturesque old town, will also be more pleasant without rubbing elbows with hordes of other tourists. What's more, this month, Lyon celebrates its fame as the birthplace of cinema – the Cinematograph was invented here in the late 1800s – with the Lumière Film Festival.

Nothing beats seeing the vibrant foliage take over Asheville in the autumn. With dozens of deciduous tree species showcasing vivid hues of red, yellow and orange come October, this North Carolina destination is a leaf peeping paradise. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fall colors and take photos at numerous overlooks. Plus, the mild fall weather is ideal for a scenic hike through the Pisgah National Forest or a stroll around the colorful Biltmore grounds. What's more, with Asheville's booming food scene, you'll be able to cozy up for a top-notch dinner after a day of adventure.

The most beautiful time to visit Acadia National Park is October, hands down. By mid-month, this top attraction in Maine is blanketed by vibrant fall foliage, both along the coast and high atop its many mountains. And starting Oct. 7 every year, Cadillac Mountain (the tallest peak on the North Atlantic seaboard) becomes the first place to see the sun rise in the U.S. Remember to register your car for a trip up the mountain, and bundle up before venturing out to catch a sunrise; it can be quite chilly at the peak early in the morning.

The Best Holiday Destinations In October 2023

October is a great month to travel, mainly because it sits between most places’ high and low seasons, plus you get the chance to celebrate Halloween in a different country! Check out this list of the best holiday destinations in October and get your passport ready!

The long hot summer days are long gone, yet the cosy wintry ones seem far away. Even if you’re down under , you’re still squashed between the two seasons. October usually doesn’t tickle the travel in most of us, but it really should!

We’ve listed, in no particular order,  some of the best places to visit in October for you to pick from. There are cute European towns, remote Pacific islands as well as potentially the most magical place on earth.

Where will you go this October?

Red rock arch with mountains in the background

Have you ever considered visiting Croatia? How about Easter Island? You can find a quick description of these places and more in this list, as well as the top tours to enjoy whilst you’re there and the best places to stay for all budgets!

Click on the links to read the place you’re most interested in visiting or look through the whole list to get some inspiration for somewhere to travel that you have never considered before!

Barcelona – Flunking Monkey

The great thing about Barcelona is that it is easily accessible by so much of Europe but what that can create is a problem with accommodation and especially during peak season.

What is so great about the city is that even going in October it was pretty warm, around the mid to high 20s (Celsius, not Fahrenheit).

Going in October which is what I would call a shoulder season means there are fewer people and more of a chance of you getting to stay in better parts of Barcelona for a little more bang for your buck.

Cathedral in background of red leaves on tree

One thing I really appreciate in Barcelona is that all the touristic sights are spread out across the city.

This means when you walk between them you really get to feel and experience the beat of the city, and you get to enjoy this so much more when you don’t have to walk through hoards of people.

Visiting one of the best things to do in Barcelona – the Sagrada Familia? Buy your fast-track tickets here . And, if you’d prefer to sight see the best attractions at your own pace, then jump aboard the local transport with this handy Travel card .

Varanasi – My Adventures Across the World

Varanasi is one of the  best places to visit in India . It’s also one of the best holiday destinations in October. It’s a perfect time to visit, for the weather is dry and the days hot, but not suffocating. It is a really gorgeous city that has a lot to offer to visitors.

Varanasi is the cradle of the Hindu religion and is considered to be a holy place. Like many other places in India, it is crowded and chaotic. Yet, among the chaos, it is possible to find some really quiet and peaceful corners.

A yellow building on the left with steps down to the river with boats on and people paddling

One of the nicest things to do in Varanasi is taking a walk in the narrow alleys of the Old City – they are so narrow that cars can’t go through, and so it is really quiet compared to the rest of the city.

Walking along the Ghats is a must, and, at night, attending the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat: during the wonderful ceremony, fire is donated to the Mother Gange.

The funeral ceremonies can be observed during a sunrise boat tour. Keep in mind that taking photos of cremation ceremonies is not allowed. Click here to buy your boat ticket .

Among the recommended places to eat there are Spicy Bites and Bona Café. The best lassi is at Bana Lassi. Bhang Lassi (which is made with an extract of flower heads and leaves of cannabis) is best at Blue Lassi, which is just a small hole in the wall outside the Old City.

Albuquerque, New Mexico – Independent Travel Cats

I used to live in Albuquerque and it is a great city to visit in the autumn. It’s one of the best holiday destinations in October as this is when the Albuquerque Balloon Festival  takes place each year.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest annual balloon fiesta in the world and during the 10-day event, you can watch hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies.

It is one of the most colourful and most photographs festivals in the world and I am lucky to have been there twice now.

If you’re feeling adventurous, then get in your own balloon and spend an hour watching the world go round below you! Click here for more information and prices.

Tens of colourful hot air balloons in the sky over greenery

But there are also other reasons to visit Albuquerque in the autumn as it is also green chilli roasting season (green chillis go great on burgers, burritos, and in stews) and it is when the trees start to turn to autumn shades of yellow, orange, and red.

There are of course loads of year-round things to do in the city, and I’d recommend first-time visitors leave time to explore the Old Town, take the Sandia Peak tramway, visit the Albuquerque Museum, eat in New Mexican restaurants, and go hiking at Petroglyph National Monument.

Santa Fe, one of the country’s top art destinations and oldest cities, is also only a short drive or train ride away if you are looking for an interesting day trip.

Easter Island – Dotted Globe

Easter Island is a tiny volcanic island located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in the Polynesian triangle. It is a territory of Chile and can be reached by a flight from Santiago.

This small, remote island is very popular with tourists because of its ancient stone statues called the Moai or the Easter Island heads. See them in all their glory on a private tour .

The statues are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are protected by the Rapa Nui National Park. They were built by the ancient Rapa Nui people that inhabited the island a long time ago and lots of mysteries surrounding the statues.

Easter Island statue

Apart from seeing the enigmatic Moai and other archaeological sites, Easter Island also offers many other things to do including snorkelling, scuba diving, horseback riding, and seeing traditional dance performances.

The island is located in the Southern hemisphere and the cold winter weather ends in August – September.

It’s one of the best holiday destinations in October since there are very few tourists and hotels, as well as activities, are offered at a discounted price. The water temperature in October is also ideal for swimming, surfing, and other water-based activities.

Istria, Croatia – Nylon Pink TV

Formerly known as Histria, this western Croatian peninsula is the largest in the Adriatic Sea. It has a variety of different climates such as continental, Mediterranean, and oceanic, as well as various geographical features such as mountains, rivers, and valleys.

Istria is becoming quite a popular tourist destination and it’s easy to see why. The beautiful peninsula offers many scenic views, picturesque towns, and comfy hotel beds.

Getting there is fairly easy – you can fly straight to the airport in the town of Pula, or to one of the nearby airports in Italy.

City of brown and orange buildings with tall twoer in the middle, reflecting on the water surrounding it

Istria is one of the best holiday destinations in October for a number of reasons. For one, the lack of tropic temperatures if that’s not your cup of tea.

Also, the fall months show stunning colours on the local vegetation, giving you many excellent photo ops.

There are also many local events in October, such as Truffle Days every weekend, the Marunada chestnut festival, the Pula boat fair, and a Brandy Festival in Hum, the smallest town in the world.

Disney World – Nomad By Trade

Fall is my favourite time to visit Disney World because of the combination of great weather and two of my favourite events.

The Epcot International Food and Wine Festival kicks off around Labour Day each year and features kiosks serving amazing small plates and boozy drinks from around the world.

The regular Epcot pavilions are represented, and additional countries like Australia and Brazil are added to bring extra flavour. It’s the perfect grown-up event for Disney parks.

Gigantic golf ball and model of the Eiffel Tower behind the Epcot food and wine sign

If you’re more into Halloween, Mickey’s Not so Scary Halloween Party runs on select evenings at the Magic Kingdom throughout September and October. This special after-hours ticketed event features an exclusive parade, fireworks presentation, and Hocus Pocus themed stage show.

Adults and kids can also dress up in their favourite costumes and trick or treat at designated spots around the park.

Rare characters make an appearance for a meet and greets with guests – you even have a chance to get a photo with all of the Seven Dwarves at once.

Utah – Wandering With A Dromomaniac

I bet you never thought about going to Utah in October! Most people think of skiing when they think of Utah but October is the perfect time to visit the Mighty 5 National Parks .

The crowds are minimal, the weather is perfect, and you can get some great travel deals.

If you want to see the 5 parks (Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches) all in one go I recommend flying into Las Vegas, renting a car, and driving the scenic route from one park to the next.

Red dusty land

For the 2 biggest parks (Zion and Bryce) there is a shuttle to take you to the trails and in the summer, you can end up waiting several hours for a ride but in October there is virtually no wait.

If you don’t want to take the shuttle, then another option is taking a small group tour. Explore the parks with plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent landscapes, and relax with your provided lunch too. Click here for more information and prices for a tour like this .

Once on the trails, if you like them a little more strenuous, you may not see another person for long stretches of time.

It’s the best way to experience these parks, without the stress of being overwhelmed by people. It’s just you and some of the best scenery you will ever have the privilege of witnessing.

The best October Prime Day travel deals, according to an editor who has taken 48 flights this year

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

We're serious about travel gear — from the best carry-on bags to the best travel pillow , our travel editors have tested it all firsthand. Through years of experience we've learned that the investing in the best luggage and travel accessories can make your trip infinitely more convenient and comfortable. During Amazon's October Prime Day, you can save on suitcases, portable pillows, and cozy outfits, including top-caliber brands like Samsonite and Travelpro.

I personally have taken 48 flights so far this year, and I'm always bringing along new suitcases and accessories to test. I've obsessively combed through thousands of Prime Day travel deals to find the absolute best bargains on truly great products. So far, my favorite deal is 50% off Samonsite's Freeform 2-Piece Set. Samsonite makes extremely durable, high-quality luggage, and this set comes with both a carry-on and a checked piece.

We're also keeping track of the best Prime Day deals  in real time, so check back often for the newest deals.

Top 4 travel deals

  • Travelpro Maxlite Air Hardside Carry-On 21-Inch $169.99 $115.59
  • Veken 8 Set Packing Cubes $29.99 $20.69
  • JISULIFE Portable Small Pocket Fan $24.99 $17.99
  • AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow $27.99 $19.19

The best luggage deals

In general, we think the best luggage for most people is a hard-sided bag, which offers durability. Soft-sided bags might be a good option if you mainly travel with hand-luggage only; soft-sided suitcases are more malleable and can usually be stuffed into even the most tight overhead spaces. However, they won't offer your belongings any protection from tough handling. If you're a hand-luggage only kind of person, or are going on a shorter trip the best travel backpacks , duffels, and personal items will save you from having to vye for space in the overhead bins.

best travel deals for october 2023

Top Day Trips from Moscow

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Entertainment , Travel , Video

Moscow , the sprawling historical, economic and cultural capital of Russia, home to 12 million people and countless museums, galleries, restaurants and parks, is certainly seeing a lot of action this summer.

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, over 1 million fans from across the globe have poured into this iconic city, which is hosting a grand total of 12 World Cup matches this summer. Although there’s never been a better time to be in Moscow, the intense crowds and, of course, the infamous summer heat waves, can sometimes be a little too much.

The Russian capital is well connected to a huge variety of national parks, cities, villages and historic sites, meaning you’ve got no shortage of amazing options to escape the city and soak up the best of Russian culture. Here’s a round-up of the best day trips to take from Moscow.

The Archangelskoye Estate

Only an hour away on the train from central Moscow, the sprawling Archangelskoye is a heart-stopping masterpiece of old Russian splendour. Originally belonging to the notorious Golitsyn dynasty, this massive estate is one of the best-preserved showcases of Russian neoclassical architecture in the world, with the ornately curated gardens being home to multiple mansions, each with their own original and eclectic design.

As well as drinking in the beautiful surroundings in this serene oasis, the estate also plays host to many of Russia’s most acclaimed music festivals, so make sure to keep tabs on what’s on this summer.

If you’re looking for a little bit of city life without the manic hustle of Moscow, hop on the train for 90 minutes and you’ll find yourself in the vibrant city of Saransk , the historic capital of the Republic of Mordovia.

Long known for its vibrant cultural scene, you should make sure to hit up the Maly Theatre and of course, the official State Puppet Theatre, which has a long tradition of performing daring and hilarious puppet satires. You may even find yourself there with the World Cup, as this small city has hosted eight teams there this summer, including Portugal – a team who topped their group and progressed as 25/1 outsiders according to the bookmaker Betway .

The Mordovia Arena stadium, which is hosting all the games, is worth a visit in itself, given the surreal design and monumental scale of this sparkling new stadium. Also make sure to check out the imposing Regional Museum, just a stone’s throw away from the train station, to learn more about this tiny and tortured republic, as well as sampling the fare at the surprisingly good museum cafe.

This unique and ancient little town , just a few miles outside of Moscow (although it has no train station, you can get the train to nearby Vladimir and use public transport), is often described as somewhere completely untouched by time.

It is the physical embodiment of the mythical and much-idealized Russian vision of simple country life, a small village full of dirt roads, friendly locals and beautiful old churches. The town is also well-known for the local mead produced there, a highly alcoholic drink made of honey, so make sure to sample the local wares and get a little buzz going before you hit up the 13th-century monastery by the main river.

This is definitely the place to go if you want to get away from the international bubble of Moscow and experience a little bit of traditional Russia, and prices here are naturally several times lower for just about everything.

Gorki Leninskie

You can’t do Russia without exploring some of the Soviet history which left a permanent mark on the country and the world, and the best place to do so is the Gorki Lenenskie.

Just under an hour away from Moscow by train, this estate was where the Soviet leader Lenin lived out his final years, and it’s where you’ll find some striking examples of Soviet architecture , as well as a painstakingly detailed museum documenting this influential figure’s life, loves, achievements and dramas.

Most of the exhibits are in Russian, but this is still an important place to go to get a better picture of the monumental upheavals that Russia has experienced in the last century.

You know what’s better than quiet luxury? Affordable luxury. These new hotels, including a much-anticipated Las Vegas hub and an Indonesian island getaway, are all inventive, luxurious, and around $300 a night or less.

21c Museum Hotel St. Louis

Courtesy of 21c Museum Hotels

Opening in August 2023 with the not-so-hidden agenda to breathe new life into one of St. Louis’s most historic neighborhoods, this 173-room property — Missouri’s second 21c Museum Hotel — has proven that it is indeed fun to stay at a YMCA. Before the renovated, 10-story neo-Renaissance building found a second life as a hotel, it housed the downtown St. Louis chapter of the YMCA for nearly a century. Today, instead of luring guests with team sports and weight rooms, this Locust Street location does so with art exhibitions, culinary extravagances, and well-curated guest rooms. The building’s Wes Anderson–esque facade was renovated by the preservation pros at Perfido Weiskopf Wagstaff + Goettel , while Bill Rooney Studio reimagined the guest rooms and architecture firm Hufft designed the public spaces. True to the brand’s ethos, the hotel only showcases art from the 21st century, each piece hanging from an unexpected place, like on the walls lining the YMCA’s former basketball court — gloss floors, suspended running track, and all. Altogether, there is more than 14,000 square feet of art exhibition space, all designed to double as event space hosting community activities like altruistic happy hours supporting a different local nonprofit each month. Even the hotel rooms act as mini galleries, featuring unconventional layouts and exclusive artwork from artists with strong ties to Missouri, like Carmon Colangelo. Designers brought in custom Rookwood Pottery tiles to replicate the historic inlays of the basement fitness and swim club, where the phrase “Swim for Life” is still etched on the pool floor, preserving a piece of YMCA history. In contrast, new culinary additions bring a fresh appeal to the hotel — I loved the Northwest Coffee at Good Press cafe and the playful, Spanish-style tapas and cocktails at Idol Wolf restaurant. From $161/night. Accessible hotel. — Kristy Alpert

Cap Karoso, Sumba, Indonesia

Frédéric Lagrange

Nothing builds anticipation like a 45-minute drive between corn fields and the sapphire Indian Ocean, on a road lined with flora so lush vines spill onto the pavement. It wouldn’t have taken much to enchant me after that trip, but the welcome I received at Cap Karoso , a 15-acre beachfront resort on an undeveloped island east of Bali, still managed to overdeliver. The staff greeted me by name and handed me an indigo ceramic cup containing a heavenly hibiscus-coconut elixir: precisely the type of off-the-grid charm that makes this 47-room, 20-villa property so singular. The food and drink from the Beach Club restaurant and Apicine Bar were flavored with local ingredients — think papaya spritzes and handmade gnocchi with Sumba cashew foam, courtesy of executive chef Antoine LeVacon and consulting mixology maestro Nico de Soto. The guest chef–only restaurant Julang stimulated my tastebuds with dishes like king prawn with asparagus, cardamom foam, and ponzu sauce courtesy of Tokyo-born chef Katsuaki Okiyama, the guest chef during my stay. This is a place well equipped for downtime, thanks to the Malala Spa, which uses healing herbs and rituals for its treatments, and has two picturesque pools, sunlit accommodations with generous bathtubs, and commissioned artwork that plays on motifs from ancient Sumbanese culture. Nearby, traditional Marapu villages, crystalline lagoons, and surf breaks are also ripe for exploration. Fiery sunsets mesmerized me from the beach, where at low tide locals fished for their dinners, but nothing captivated me quite like my interactions with the predominantly Sumbanese staff, who are overwhelmingly warm. From $300/night. — Kathryn Romeyn

Como Metropolitan Singapore

Courtesy of COMO Hotels and Resorts

Last September, the Singapore-based Como group unveiled Como Metropolitan Singapore , the brand’s first hotel in its home country. Located on Orchard Road — the city-state’s famed shopping and lifestyle hub — the hotel is part of Como Orchard, an immersive experience spread over 19 floors, which showcases the group’s strengths in hospitality, wellness, fashion and cuisine. Designed by Atelier Ikebuchi and Milan-based Otto Studio, the interiors feature clean lines, contemporary aesthetics, and furniture from noted Italian brand Giorgetti. A bonsai tree marks its discreet entrance, while the lobby features a huge LED display of flowers by artist Thomas Hilland and locally sourced coffees served by Bruno, the robot barista. The 156 rooms are full of thoughtful touches, such as amenities from wellness brand Como Shambhala, butler hatches, and refillable water bottles. A newly launched Sleep Dreams package encourages deep relaxation in your room using a device that plays low-frequency sound waves. Como Shambhala offers yoga, pilates, a 1,500 square foot gym, and innovative treatments like hot and cold immersion therapies. (I tried the Oxygen Therapy, which involved destressing in a lightly-pressurized hyperbaric device.) International dining concepts like Cedric Grolet Singapore and Cote Singapore draw both travelers and locals to the property; the former serves Grolet’s exquisite fruit and flower-shaped pastries, sandwiches, and teas. Cote Singapore — the Michelin-starred U.S. restaurant’s first international outpost–blends American steak preparations with Korean BBQ, offering top-quality beef cuts and a lively, clubby atmosphere best described as “sexy Yakuza den.” From $300/night. Accessible hotel. — Shamilee Vellu

Fontainebleau Las Vegas

Connie Zhou/Courtesy of Fontainebleau Las Vegas

Since Fontainebleau Las Vegas was first announced in 2005, there has been an infusion of more than $3.7 billion into this 67-story resort. And after walking through its cantilevered porte-cochere, I can say, as a Vegas local, that it’s been worth the wait. Beyond the lobby is an impressive art collection including a 46-foot sculpture by Urs Fischer and paintings by Richard Prince. The design, curated by the resort’s creative director Peter Arnell and executive vice president of design John Rawlins, feels cohesive, especially with a six-acre pool deck that boasts every aquatic feature imaginable, from serenity pools to baths hosting full-on bacchanals. The nearby spa features a performance sauna where professional dancers use choreographed towel flicks to warm the guests, and the massive co-ed thermal area is the city’s largest, with hydrotherapy pools, cold plunges, a snow shower, a salt-mist cave, and an herbal inhalation room. Rooms start at a generous 488 square feet and feature striking views of the Strip and Las Vegas Valley; I particularly loved the massive sunken tub in my Royal Suite. There are 36 restaurants and bars: my favorites included Kyu (an Asian-inspired, wood-fired BBQ) where the nam prik –sauced kale chips and wagyu tartare mixed with brûléed bone marrow was a revelation; Papi Steak, serving some of the city’s best prime selects; and Ito, where booking one of the 12 seats at the swank omakase counter affords access to the resort’s super-exclusive members’ club, the Poodle Room, before and after dinner. For more convivial pursuits, visit the on-site outpost of white-hot Miami nightclub Liv and Liv Beach. From $300/night. Accessible hotel. — David Morris

Hotel Honeyrose Montréal, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

Courtesy of Hotel Honeyrose Montreal

At Honeyrose , a new downtown Montreal hotel, bold design gestures mean Insta-ready surprises everywhere: a swirling lobby staircase, pressed-flower bar tables, and black-and-white murals in the common areas. While Honeyrose is part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio brand, its owners amped up the local flavor by tapping stellar Montreal talent. Architects from Provencher Roy designed the sleek guest rooms — among the city’s biggest — with bathroom amenities from local organic brand Idoine and art from Montreal painter Roxy Peroxyde, who adds floral face tattoos to traditional portraits. Homegrown design guru Zébulon Perron dreamed up the naval-inspired, ground-floor Commodore restaurant, where a wooden crown hovers over a glossy circular bar. French bistro fare here includes an epic Niçoise salad, Gruyère-slathered onion soup, and an ethereal crème brûlée. I was thrilled to see coffee sourced from my local roastery, Atwater Market’s beloved Brûlerie aux Quatre Vents. Montreal-based set designer Juliette Sarrazin outfitted the buzzy, fifth-floor Muze lounge with pink flamingos, birdcages, and 1970s swing seats on the massive terrace. The 15th floor houses a T-shaped pool and Precor machinery–equipped gym with city views through floor-to-ceiling windows. You won’t find a better location if you’re here for one of the city’s big cultural events, like the Montreal International Jazz Festival . Honeyrose borders the Quartier des Spectacles ― literally, the “neighborhood of shows” ― with its concert halls, outdoor performance venues, and museums. Access to the city’s speedy, efficient Metro is across the street, and Old Montreal is a 15-minute stroll south. From $269/night . Accessible hotel. — Michael Kaminer

Hotel San Fernando, Mexico City

Hugo Campoy/Courtesy of Hotel San Fernando

Did you know San Fernando is the patron saint of the Spanish Army Corps of Engineers? The designers from Bunkhouse Hotels , the creative Austin, Texas–based hospitality group, reveled in such off-beat details of Hispanic culture when they reimagined the Edificio San Fernando, an elegant art deco apartment building from 1947, as a boutique hotel in La Condesa, one of CDMX's leafiest and most charming neighborhoods. The Hotel San Fernando is a loving celebration of mexicanidad that recalls the genteel beauty of the city in the post-war era, when it was a sleepy mountain capital where a few cars trundled down broad, leafy avenues and artistic celebrities like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were bringing the country's Indigenous culture into the mainstream. The hotel’s 19 rooms spread over five floors feel like spacious apartments, with original casement windows, contemporary furnishings from local design studio La Metropolitana, and (in many cases) their own kitchens and lounge rooms. Bunkhouse's designers say they were inspired by the Mexican idea of sobremesa , the dreamy after-meal time when diners relax into conversation and take a respite from their hectic lives. The sense of entering a serene refuge from the 21st century begins as you pass through the original curved doors to the lobby, which is adorned with striking green tiles, stained-glass windows, hanging textiles, and decorative lamps from the Oaxacan-based studio Oaxifornia. The polished-stone and wood stairway leading upstairs is overflowing with potted plants, giving a calming, tropical greenhouse effect (there is no elevator), while the attached Lounge Fernando extending onto the sidewalk serves tasty small bites (try the fried shrimp tacos), an array of creative margaritas, and Mexican natural wines. Drinks can also be taken to the sun-dappled rooftop, which doubles as a breakfast patio for guests in the mornings. And because San Fernando opens into the heart of La Condesa, an array of fine restaurants, bars, cafes, parks, clothing boutiques, and art galleries are only a stroll away. From $225/night. — Tony Perrottet

Otro Oaxaca, Mexico

Courtesy of Otro Oaxaca/Design Hotels

Directly across the street from Oaxaca’s Baroque cathedral Santo Domingo, Otro Oaxaca boasts perhaps the best views and most coveted location of any hotel in the cobblestoned city. The newest opening from Mexican boutique hotel firm Grupo Habita , Otro is its fourth installment in the state of Oaxaca. Otro is just a short walk from some of the city’s most tempting restaurants, museums, and attractions, yet it offers guests a tranquil respite from the clamor. The neo-vanguardist hotel, with its natural palette of reclaimed wood, adobe, brick, and iron, is a dream for design aficionados, and each of its 16 utilitarian rooms includes surprising pops of color, like green–coated aluminum bed frames with built-in bedside tables and burgundy suede blackout curtains. On the rooftop, guests can take in the panoramic views of Oaxaca’s central valleys while lounging on French terry cloth daybeds lining the lap pool. For those who prefer more private swimming quarters, book an hour-long slot at Otro’s subterranean plunge pool, meant to mimic a cenote. I happily spent 60 minutes luxuriating in the underground space before heading to dinner at Otro’s restaurant. I started my meal by choosing from a wide selection of mezcals, the menu offering everything from espadín to rare agave spirits like tepeztate and tobasiche . Otro’s dinner menu highlights the bounty of Oaxacan seafood, with fish delivered daily from the coast. The stone crab pâté toast with fermented black garlic — at once sweet, savory, and with generous hunks of meaty crab — is a must-order. From $300/night. — Catherine Tansey

Palihouse Hyde Park Village, Tampa, Florida

Courtesy of Palisociety

Accessed from a street-level scene of upscale boutiques and restaurants in one of Tampa’s most sought-after residential neighborhoods, Palihouse Hyde Park Village made me feel like I was arriving at a friend’s house. Inside I found a two-story lobby with checkerboard terrazzo floors and a coffered white oak paneling; elsewhere in the property I spotted other surprising touches, like a three-tier, hand-blown glass chandelier, a framed collection of vintage Hermès scarves, and handmade Mexican ceramic tiles. The hotel’s living-room-style lounge, the Lobby Bar, is perfect for cocktails and conversation, and serves breakfast plus an all-day bar menu featuring classic burgers, lobster tacos, and tuna tartare. Tucked away down art-filled corridors are 36 rooms outfitted with Smeg mini fridges, custom wallpaper and drapery, and a cocktail bar stocked with artisan spirits, tools, and tumblers for in-room cocktail hour. Outside in the leafy Hyde Park Village neighborhood, you can browse boutiques, bike along the nearby bayfront, or just picnic on pizza under the shade of a live oak. From $305/night. Accessible hotel. — Terry Ward

Roost Detroit

Matthew Williams/Courtesy of ROOST Detroit

Tucked inside Detroit’s iconic Book Tower, this Roost location merges the comforts of a contemporary home with the elegance of a bygone era. The building’s past and future blend seamlessly, thanks to a transformative renovation by the real estate firm Bedrock Detroit. The painstaking restoration, conducted over a seven-year period, invokes the structure’s Italian Renaissance–revival style, originally conceived by architect Louis Kamper in the 1920s, which includes awe-inspiring arches and a romantic rotunda that now floats above an all-day café and wine bar. The property has been updated with a contemporary art collection curated by the Library Street Collective gallery and features pieces by local creatives Senghor Reid and Sydney James. Travelers staying in one of the property’s 117 apartment suites will love the spacious floor plans, some of which feature Detroit river views.

But the details are what define the guest experience: stellar service, Le Labo Santal 33 amenities, elevated electronics from Sonos and Samsung, and colorful Fortessa glassware are just a few ways this property defies the expectations of a standard extended stay. Roost is also an ideal hideaway for remote work: a 3,000-square-foot study also serves as a co-working space and lounge that features private booths and retreat-ready conference rooms. There are several restaurants, including a chic rooftop bar named Kampers, but Le Supreme is the one that stands out. This Parisian-inspired brasserie has vintage-inspired decor. I parked myself in a booth and ordered a rhubarb and rosé-filled Mon Cheri cocktail, which paired well with the peppercorn-crusted filet mignon and a shrimp, avocado, and mâche salad. From $289/night. Accessible hotel. — Keyaira Boone

Rosemary, Marrakesh

Hidden behind a hand-carved cedar door, Rosemary is the latest example of the creative energy sizzling through this ancient city. The five-bedroom guesthouse was designed by Belgian artist Laurence Leenaert, who founded the ceramics and textile brand Lrnce, known for its cool, artsy aesthetic. Working with more than 30 local artisans, she used materials sourced in Morocco — including stained glass from Meknes, pots from Safi, and marble from Rabat. Every inch of the riad is an expression of her imagination, from the abstract drawings hand-carved into sandstone tables to the colorful murals made from zellige tiles. Squint and you’ll notice that each of the tiles in the bathroom is a miniature painting; find out more in the ceramic and plaster workshops that turn Rosemary into a creative hub. From $236/night. — Chloe Sachdev

The Leela Ashtamudi, A Raviz Hotel, Kerala, India

Courtesy of The Leela Palaces Hotels and Resorts

On the banks of Kerala’s second largest lake, Ashtamudi, The Leela offers visitors the chance to experience the unhurried beauty of Kerala’s backwaters. Tourist traffic on Ashtamudi is substantially lower than at Kerala’s other waterways, like the sought-after Kumarakom Backwaters and Alleppey Backwaters. While the new hotel is still a work in progress — a bar and restaurant, among other things, are not yet open — it is arguably the best in this underappreciated region. On a recent trip, I saw no tourists as I took the hotel boat around the lake in search of brackish water dolphins, only fisherfolk tending to their nets. After a morning on the lake, I had lunch at the hotel overlooking the lakeside garden. Here, guests can have a chef prepare the fish they catch on their trip, or visit a local market with one to buy produce and cook it together. Later that day, I enjoyed an Abhyanga treatment at The Leela’s spa, where the masseurs kneaded my travel-weary back. The hotel’s 93 rooms and suites are tastefully done up; where some rooms feature traditional Kerala mural work drawn from Hindu myths, others carry modern art. The furniture, too, is a mix of colonial and contemporary. The room to book: the Royal Heritage suite that offers an expansive view of the lake, sunset included. From $97/night. Accessible hotel. — Prasad Ramamurthy

Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

From a distance, you could easily mistake Slieve Donard for a castle. The sprawling Victorian resort first opened 125 years ago as a railway hotel, becoming the grande dame of Newcastle, a small seaside resort town in Northern Ireland’s County Down. Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts — a brand with a collection of five historic properties located near some of Scotland and Northern Ireland’s best golf courses — completed Slieve Donard’s renovation in September. The transformed lobby and guest rooms highlight Northern Ireland’s natural beauty and the property’s heritage, and reimagined restaurants update the grandeur of the hotel’s heyday. J.J. Farrall’s, named after the hotel’s architect, serves afternoon tea and refined Irish cuisine at dinner; the Percy French, Lighthouse Lounge, and the Wolf offer more casual snacks and drinks. I was immediately struck by the hotel’s plush interiors, striking facade, and stunning views of the Irish Sea and the Mourne Mountains. Many of the 180 rooms look out over the Mournes, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — and home to Slieve Donard, the highest mountain in Northern Ireland and the hotel’s namesake. Beautiful hikes, Game of Thrones tours, and whisky distilleries are among the most popular things to do in the area, but many visitors come here for one thing: golf. The property is located right next to the Royal County Down Golf Club, which dates back to 1889 and is home to the Championship Course, widely recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world. From $286/night. Accessible hotel. — Elizabeth Rhodes

The Lafayette Hotel & Club, San Diego

Courtesy of The LaFayette

After opening in 1946, The Lafayette Hotel & Club in San Diego quickly became a celebrity hot spot. Bob Hope, its first guest, owned a penthouse apartment there. Johnny Weissmuller, of “Tarzan” fame, designed the pool. Confirmed visitors included Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, and Katharine Hepburn; local lore says Marilyn Monroe might have checked in with a politically powerful friend of hers. Over the subsequent decades, The Lafayette’s star flickered. Three years ago, local restaurateur Arsalun Tafazoli bought the hotel, and after a stunning, $31-million renovation, The Lafayette reopened this past summer. While the landmarked exterior is largely unchanged, the interior shouts loudly with new life. The Brooklyn, New York–based firm Post Company orchestrated the unabashedly maximalist design: sofas and chairs with leopard print, zebra stripes, and bold florals; multicolored Mexican Talavera toilets; hand-painted murals; one custom wallpaper featuring kimono-clad women, another with jungle-dwelling bush babies. Look closely at the bedside reading lamps and the posts of the canopy beds, and you might spot snakes; Tafazoli sees the creatures as avatars of revitalization because of how they shed their old skins. And this isn’t style over substance: There are Sferra linens on the beds, Diptyque toiletries in every bathroom, and even stationery custom-printed with the guest’s name on the desk in every room. Listen up; famed music producer Swizz Beatz curated the soundtrack. The Lafayette’s exuberant eclecticism continues in its bars — there are three, including The Gutter, where you can play skee-ball and shuffleboard while you drink — and its restaurants, most notably Quixote, where Mexican-born chef José Cepeda serves modern takes on venerable family recipes. From $248/night. Accessible hotel. — Jeff Chu

The Hoxton, Brussels

Courtesy of The Hoxton

In the rapidly developing Northern Quarter of Brussels, close to the Bruxelles-Nord railway station, is a 198-room outpost of The Hoxton , the U.K. hotel brand’s first in Belgium. Concrete architraves adorning the windows, which local architecture practice 51N4E left intact, are a stark yet nostalgic reminder of the building’s industrial and corporate past as the former IBM Tower. But the interiors, courtesy of in-house creative team Aime Studios, exude warmth and softness. For instance, the striking double-height lobby is filled with plants, in homage to the 19th-century botanical garden that once stood nearby. This greenery is juxtaposed with artwork (the lower level doubles as the Hox Gallery) and a smattering of glamorous vintage furniture snagged at flea markets and secondhand shops across the region. Public spaces are buzzy: Cantina Valentina, the Peruvian-style restaurant, is packed with locals devouring ceviche and tequeños against a backdrop of artist Madeleine Schilling’s dreamy botanical mural. There’s also Tope, a rooftop taqueria, where artist Claire de Quénetain’s painted pink ripple wallpaper is enjoyed alongside jalapeño margaritas, cacti, and heady views of the city. After a frothy, orange flower-scented Pisco sour nightcap in one of the lobby’s cocooning chairs, guests head up to their color-blocked rooms, a mélange of deep red, cream, and sky blue punctuated by striped headboards, long oval-shaped glass room dividers, and velvet sofas. Bathrooms, outfitted with confetti-pink pedestal sinks, exude an equally delightful retro feel. From $217/night. Accessible hotel. — Alia Akkam

The Pinch, Charleston, South Carolina

Matthew Williams/Courtesy of The Pinch, Charleston

Just off of King Street in Charleston, South Carolina, the flicker of gaslight beckons those in the know down a cobblestone alley to The Pinch . Housed in a collection of 19th-century buildings, the property was brought to life by design and management company Method Co . Its 22 rooms and suites, plus three extended-stay residences, are furnished tip to toe in sumptuous materials — walnut herringbone floors, zellige tiles, burnt-orange velvet sofas, marble farmhouse sinks with unlacquered brass fixtures — but the overall feel is playful and easygoing, never fussy or formal. The hotel is also home to The Quinte, a moody, wood-paneled oyster bar that retains traces of its billiards parlor past, and Lowland, a fine-dining spot in a historic townhouse across the alleyway. Presiding over the culinary show is James Beard Award–winning executive chef Jason Stanhope, who gestures to Southern classics without veering into cliché. At Lowland, unexpectedly inspired dishes such as a celery salad with dates and cheddar stuck with me well after I pushed back from the table. The Pinch is just right for a long, leisurely stay, with washer-dryers in every room and kitchens that bear the design fingerprints of a true cook: hooded gas ranges, a full lineup of kitchen tools, and enough place settings to invite friends for dinner. It’s the details that make this place sing: There’s a white-noise machine by the bed, a burr grinder for the freshest coffee, a minibar lineup that nails the high-low mix (An adaptogenic zero-proof spritz? Yep. Moon pies? Also yep.). Pair all that with extended-stay discounts and a price tag that feels refreshingly reasonable, and a multiweek Charleston residency starts to look less like a pipe dream and more like an ideal plan for shaking off the midwinter blues. From $300/night. Accessible hotel. — Lila Harron Battis

The Restoration Asheville, North Carolina

Blake Shorter/Courtesy of The Restoration Asheville

Front-door access to the best trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains, James Beard Award–winning restaurants, abundant breweries, and a thriving art scene have made Asheville, North Carolina, one of T+L readers’ favorite American cities . But what’s long been missing is an elevated hotel in the heart of downtown. Enter The Restoration Asheville , a 60-key property from The Restoration Hotel Collection (which has a flagship property in Charleston ) that opened in April 2023. My room had a green suede chaise lounge and a dramatic, oversized church-window mirror. I appreciated the Appalachian touches throughout the property, like floor-to-ceiling murals by local painter Scott Allred depicting the nearby mountains. The library-themed lobby and the adjacent streetside patio are excellent places for coffee and people-watching. I also appreciated the variety of dining options, including The Exchange restaurant, which has upgraded Southern favorites, like a jalapeño- and buttermilk-battered fried chicken sandwich and a trout and chicory caesar salad, and The Draftsman, a basement-level bar with a bowling alley and skee-ball. But if you’ve come to Asheville, you’ve come to eat and drink your way through the city . I recommend brunch at Chai Pani or Cúrate , dinner at Neng Jr.’s , and cocktails at Anoche , a snug mezcal bar in the River Arts District. Plus, the new S&W Market , a food hall and taproom in a soaring art deco building, is next door to the Restoration. From $225/night. Accessible hotel. — Elizabeth Cantrell

Yowie Hotel, Philadelphia

Bre Furlong/Courtesy of Yowie

Shannon Maldonado opened Yowie , a tiny shop in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood, in 2017, garnering a devoted following with her ever-evolving collection of cool, highly curated wares. In what feels like a natural evolution, last July, the designer opened a boutique hotel where nearly every item in the rooms is available to purchase. If walking through her shop is like getting a glimpse into Maldonado’s dynamic world, checking into the Yowie Hotel is getting to live inside it, even just for a night. The 11-room hotel is situated on the city’s historic South Street, anchored on the ground floor by the new Yowie shop and Wim, a bright, minimalist cafe. Accommodations range from a cozy room with a king-size bed to a two-bedroom suite, and while each space is outfitted with a kitchen and splashed in her calculated mashup of contemporary furniture, color, and custom art, no two are the same. Yowie is an invisible service hotel, which means in lieu of a check-in desk, you’ll get a welcome text with a code to unlock the doors. It’s all the more impressive, then, that even without the traditional hotel trappings, the designer and her team manage to impart so much warmth into the guest experience. Find a poster by the elevator with this month’s neighborhood happenings, a drawer full of goodies you may have forgotten to pack in the hallway, and a handwritten welcome note alongside a few paper guides recommending the staff’s favorite Philly spots in your room. And since there’s no lobby, I didn’t have to walk through the shop or cafe, but I wanted to for a salted caramel latte and a spiced carrot toast at Wim, and to pick up a few ceramic cereal bowls I admired in the room, as a way to bring a little piece of Yowie home. From $215/night . Accessible hotel. — Regan Stephens
