Experience Scotland, Your Way

Jeniffer, Tennesee

“Bo is a remarkable bespoke tour guide. We spent two days with her this March travelling through her ‘back yard.’ Rather than visit some of the most famous sites of the area, we wanted to see the hidden places, the quieter streets, and places that don’t garner as much attention in tour books. Her knowledge of the area is outstanding as is her ability to teach and talk about anything. We have travelled a fair amount - Bo sets the bar very high.”

What Scotland has to offer

Bo Fraser, bespoke driving tour guide, blue badge certified.

Scotland Your Way is looking forward to curating a private, guided tour that entirely suits your personal tastes and interests. This may be anything from a half-day tour of St Andrews’ golf courses and historic buildings to a full- or multi-day excursion around the Scottish mainland and islands. Whatever you choose, we will tailor a unique experience that ensures you can explore and experience Scotland’s diverse regions, culture and cuisine in a way that works for you.

Be inspired, educated and entertained by your fully-qualified Blue Badge Guide, Bo Fraser, who will personally escort you through the breathtaking landscapes, picturesque towns and vibrant cities for which Scotland is renowned. Her knowledge and experience ensure that every tour will be unforgettable.

We are proud to provide an eco-friendly service, ensuring all our Scottish tours are sustainable and respectful of the environment. We use hybrid vehicles and plant trees for every tour we run, are always mindful of our environment and will guide you responsibly through every aspect of your visit.

Scotland is a country fortunate to have many well-known, dramatic locations but Scotland Your Way also take roads that are less well-travelled. These let you discover more of its ‘hidden’ charms and visit places where you can get an appreciation of its true nature and character.

Every tour is designed around you and each is unique. Whatever draws you to Scotland – and this might include our history, scenery, amazing food or your own family connections – please let us know. We can then start creating an itinerary that satisfies your wishes and curiosity, providing experiences and memories that will remain with you forever.

About STGA

Blue Badge Guide Course

What is the blue badge course.

The Scottish Tourist Guides Association (STGA) offers a Blue Badge Training Programme for tourist guides in Scotland. This course uses the latest standards and allows you to establish your own qualified Blue Badge Scottish tourist guide business after completion. Blue Badge guides are qualified to guide Scotland-wide. While anyone can set themselves up as a guide, many people actively already involved in guiding or are new to guiding join the courses. Applicants recognise the need for training and the recognition that a guiding qualification brings when working with tour operators. Tour operators are aware of the training standards and will employ a trained qualified guide knowing that they will provide good guiding services and in turn will give visitors a quality experience.

STGA Blue badge course

What does the Blue Badge Course involve?

The 18-month STGA Blue Badge Training Programme is delivered in English through three integrated modules: Core Knowledge Regional Studies Professional Skills The delivery of these modules incorporates PowerPoint presentations, talks, seminars (delivered online and in class), group work, individual presentations, practical training on walks, sites and in moving vehicles, online resources, study away-days, written and practical assessments as well as ongoing feedback and discussion. Students are expected to be self-driven and take responsibility for their learning. The minimum requirement for self-directed study for this course is 1200 to 1600 hours.

2025 - 2027 Blue Badge Course

The next STGA Blue Badge Training Programme will begin in Autumn 2025. Blue Badge guide course numbers are limited to a maximum of 36 who: ☞ are absolutely committed to a future career as a professional tourist guide in Scotland ☞ can demonstrate the skills and attributes required of a professional tourist guide ☞ have the time and resources to commit to an intensive 18-month course ☞ are prepared to work substantial hours in the main tourist season (April-October) The STGA are now accepting expressions of interest for the 2025-27 Blue Badge Course. If you wish to express your interest in the course, please complete the form below.

how to spot an STGA guide

The fee for the Blue Badge Course is likely to be in the region of  £7,500-£7,850:

  • This price includes a first payment of 10% which is required to be paid on accepting a place
  • As the course is completely self-funding, we regret there are no refunds if a student withdraws from the course/part of course/non-use of services provided

Please note that not all applicants will progress through all stages. You may have the opportunity to apply again if your application is unsuccessful at any stage, or you decide to delay your application.

Once offered a place on the course you will need to be available for the following classes:

  • streamed lectures from 6pm on Wednesdays
  • classroom sessions, field trips and practical guiding activities on Saturdays and Sundays, once or twice a month. These sessions take place in Central Scotland where possible, for example Glasgow, Edinburgh, or Linlithgow.
  • one week in October for seminars and away days to different locations
  • one week (with overnight stays) in July, when course activities will take place in different parts of the country.

Students must be prepared to commit a substantial amount of time to self study and preparation for assessments.

Upon completion of the Blue Badge Guide Course and the Blue Badge exam, students become self-employed members of the STGA. Members of the Association get work via many different avenues including tour operators, Destination Management Companies (DMCs), shore excursions companies, and independent tourists.

Once qualified each guide is self employed. This means the amount an individual works as a guide is up to that individual. Tourism in Scotland is growing and there has not been any shortage of work in recent years.

All STGA guides are self-employed members of the Association, it is up to each member to determine their own rates for the services they provide.

Our suggested guide rates can be found here .

Get up close and personal in Small & Private Groups

Scotland is best in a small group. Taste the salt spray from a sea loch, feel the rough and ancient stone, listen to the raucous fiddle in a cosy pub corner.

All tours are

Personalised to your t astes.

Your exclusive tours are personalised based on your preferences. Whether it's Mountains & Castles, Music & Dance or Food & Drink, I can design a trip to remember, just for you.

A warm and honest

Scottish welcome.

We're a hospitable lot, here in Scotland. I'm certainly stereotypical that way. It's my honour to be your host while we explore Scotland together.

Fergus is quite simply everything you would want from a guide and frankly a person. He is passionate about what he does, knows SO MUCH about the history of Scotland and details others don't, as well as extremely organized and pays attention to details - details we even forgot we mentioned ;) While he stuck to the original plan, the little things he did on the fly for our kids and us really touched our hearts and we consider him a family friend at this point.

Welcome to Scotland!

My name is Ross Tillbrook and sharing both my home town of Edinburgh and my bonnie wee country of Scotland with visitors and locals is something I’m truly passionate about.

As a Blue Badge Guide accredited by the Scottish Tourist Guides Association, I’m qualified to help you explore the entire country and my skills as an expert storyteller will help bring it to life

After roles promoting the country as a tourism destination with both Visit Scotland and Visit Britain. I started working as a tourist guide on the open top bus tours of Edinburgh 20 years ago before training with Mercat Tours to take historic walking tours through the Old Town. When darkness fell I led ghost tours beneath the city which helped develop my storytelling. Working as a guide in the newly opened Scottish Parliament gave me an insight into modern Scotland

On the operational side I spent a number of years organising tours to Scotland as the Groups Operations Manager for JacTravel, the biggest inbound tour operator to the country. I therefore fully understand the challenges and opportunities putting an itinerary together provides

As an experienced tourist guide who has worked with both leisure and business groups of all ages and nationalities.  I only guide in English but I am often praised for my clarity and groups, including student groups, who have English as a second language find me easy to understand  I see myself as both an ambassador for my city and my country and believe that guiding should be fun!

Driver-Guide Scotland

Private tours of scotland with morag dunbar.

I am a Scottish Driver-Guide and an accredited Scottish Blue Badge Tourist Guide with a great enthusiasm for my native country. My Private Tours of Scotland are intended, not only to be interesting, but fun, aiming to give you a holiday with many lasting memories and, who knows, to bring you back again.

Morag with walking group

Over time I have come to find genealogy tours very rewarding, locating these family-related places which are of special interest to relatives now living far away.

The Clan MacRae Church & burial ground

I even have a special tour focusing on the Scottish-born actor, Gerard (Gerry) Butler.

The making of a king: Part 2

Listen to the podcast.

Extraordinary Stories of Britain is a podcast packed with fun and informative tales from our island’s long and storied past. Visiting little-known corners of history, shedding new light on familiar faces, uncovering unusual - and sometimes bizarre - facts along the way, this is the podcast for anglophiles, history buffs, and anyone interested in finding out more about the UK. From killer queens to grime and punishment, from medieval medicine to celebrity cats, from secret sewers to pickled philosophers, we leave no historic stone unturned.

My favourite ...

London Blue Badge Guide, Mr Londoner, tells us about his favourite London event. “My favourite event is the Colour Walk. Spitalfields Market hosts this relatively un-discovered happening on the third Thursday of every month, to coincide with the Flea Market. I delight in ‘the hidden and the lost’ - and this is secret London at its very best. The Colour Walkers are creative types who revel in all things bright, flamboyant and outrageous. I love it because this special event brings all sorts of different people together - gay, straight, black, white, men, women or people in between. But all anyone really cares about is the colour and curation of the outfits - and the joy of the moment. The participants apply themselves rigorously to the task - yet the whole thing is so welcoming and inclusive. Adventurous guests love it. It offers a different perspective. And it’s an insight into a surprisingly witty, quirky and more diverse side of Old London Town.” Mr Londoner is writer, photographer and broadcaster Antony Robbins.
