The south Indian state of Kerala is famous for its national parks, among other things. And Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary happens to be one of the largest in this state. Also known as PNP, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies this under category II, which is for national parks. This means that the protected area is used for conservation of the wild animals and plants, and is not just a sightseeing spot.

Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is governed by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department and sees an average annual footfall of hundreds of thousands of people. The national park borders the state lines of Tamil Nadu and enjoys its position on the southern part of the Western Ghats.

There are very few national parks in India which are open in all seasons, and Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary happens to be one of those few. While sightings vary in each season, the park lets tourists and naturalists in throughout the year during designated entry and exit times.

One can visit this national park on any day of the week between 6 AM and 7 PM. Sighting of birds is the best during sunrise and sunset. However, if you are on the search for the big cats, afternoons are the best. The wildlife sanctuary also opens for night safaris after 8 PM. This safari primarily aims to help one spot the elusive leopard, among other night animals and even nocturnal birds such as owls.

Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary levies various fees depending on your nationality, age and gadgets that you carry. For Indian adults, the price is INR 45. For Indian children, it is INR 15 per head. Foreign adult nationals can enter by paying INR 500 whereas foreign children are charged INR 180 each.

If you carry a still camera, you will be charged INR 38, but for video cameras, the fee is INR 300. For better luck with sighting wild animals and identifying avifauna, it is recommended to bring along your binoculars. If you don’t have any, you can rent it from their office for INR 50, with an extra INR 100 as security deposit.

Apart from the regular entry fees, there are special safaris and treks which are available inside. They run a boat safari which is priced at INR 150 for those above the age of 11, and only INR 50 for those under 11 years of age.

The park also runs the adventurous Periyar Tiger Trails Trek which costs INR 5,500 per head per night. However, if you book this for two nights, it comes at a discounted price of INR 7,500 per person for the entire duration.

History Behind the Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary

Established in 1982, Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary’s history dates back to a time further back in the past. In 1899, the Periyar Lake Reserve was formed a few years after the construction of a masonry gravity dam, called the Mullaperiyar Dam, which was built over the Periyar River in 1895.

In 1934, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the then Maharaja of the erstwhile Kingdom of Travancore, earmarked the forested land around the Periyar Lake as private game reserve. This was done primarily to discourage encroachment of the area by tea plantation owners, who would ultimately clear the forest land to make tea gardens. Named Nellikkampatty Game Reserve, the forest saw its first conservation effort before India became independent.

Later in 1950, the land in Periyar was consolidated and declared a wildlife sanctuary after India became politically stable and autonomous. In 1978, Periyar was pronounced a tiger reserve, in an effort to preserve the tiger population in this part of Kerala. Finally, in 1982, the core area of the forest was notified as a national park, raising its status on the biodiversity and wildlife conservation yardstick.

In 1991, the national park received financial support for the conservation of its Asian Elephants under Project Elephant. The forest was later divided into Periyar East and Periyar West in 2001. The park saw an enlargement in 2007 when 148 square kilometers of the land of Goodrical Range was added to it. Again in 2012, the reserve received 148 square kilometers of the Ponnambalamedu evergreen forest.

Straddling the Pandalam Hills and the Cardamom Hills or Yela Mala of the Western Ghats, this national park has the privilege of altitude. The park is bounded by Medaganam and Vellimalai in the north and the Kallimalai Peak in the east. To its west is a plateau at an altitude of 1,200 metres or 3,900 feet. In a sharp contrast, the Pamba River valley in the premises presents the lowest altitude at 100 metres.

Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 925 square kilometres or 357 square miles. Of this sprawling protected area, 305 square kilometres or 118 square miles forms the Periyar National Park in the core zone. Most of the park has thickly wooded rolling hills which become quite steep at certain sections.

The Periyar Lake sits at the centre of the wildlife sanctuary, spanning an area of 26 square kilometres or 10 square miles. At 2,019 metres or 2,624 feet, the Kottamala Peak is the highest peak in the national park. Other important peaks inside the park are Karimala, Pachayarmala, Chokkampetti mala, Vellimala and Sunderamala.

5. One can also find other types of insects here, such as the Asian emerald dragonfly, which is only one of 85 species of odonata spotted here. You can also see the endemic saturniid Atlas moth here, which is one of the different types of moth inside the national park.

6. Amphibian fanatics can look forward to sightings of several types of toads, frogs and caecilians. Some of the species are the bicoloured Malabar frog endemic to the Western Ghats, the Asian Toad, the Malabar Hills fungoid frog and the Malabar gliding frog which is a flying rhacophorid tree frog.

7. The rivers and lakes that form the Periyar National Park house around 40 species of fish. Some of those are the Travancore loach, the Periyar barb, a cyprinid fish endemic to the Periyar Lake, the Channa barb which is endemic to India, the Periyar trout endemic to Kerala and the Periyar latia which is only seen in the Periyar River.

8. Keep your eyes peeled for the 45 species of reptiles in this ecosystem, of which 2 are turtles, 13 are lizards and the 30 rest are snakes. Some of the venomous snakes to watch out for are the Malabar pit viper, striped coral snake and king cobra.

9. Including threatened species, the park has 35 mammal species which comprise tigers, elephants, mongooses, gaurs, fruit bats, sambars, langurs, wild boars, macaques, squirrels, tahrs, jungle cats and sloth bears.

10. Periyar is primarily a tiger reserve, and one can see that clearly when one looks at the number of white tigers and Bengal tigers in the park, the number of Bengal tigers being 35.

11. Birdwatchers can rejoice in the fact that 266 native and migrant birds can be sighted inside the national park. Some birds to keep your binoculars ready for are the Eurasian woodcock, the paddyfield warbler, the steppe gull, the grey-necked bunting, the black baza, the Oriental darter, the spot-bellied eagle-owl, the black-necked stork, the Nilgiri thrush, Sri Lanka frogmouth, the little spiderhunter, the great hornbill, the rufous-bellied hawk-eagle and the brahminy kite.

12. Even endemic bird species can be spotted by birders. Some examples are the white-bellied blue flycatcher, the Malabar grey hornbill, the crimson-backed sunbird, Nilgiri wood pigeon, the blue-winged parakeet and Nilgiri flycatcher.

The lake was artificially created when the Mullaperiyar River was dammed by the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam in 1895. Periyar Lake is popular for boating, allowing for a lot of water birds to be sighted. The boat ride runs for 90 minutes and begins at designated times: 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:15 AM, 1:45 PM and 3:30 PM. Tickets cost INR 225 for adults and INR 75 for children.

2. Mullaperiyar Dam : A favourite with picnickers, the Mullaperiyar Dam sits over the Periyar River and enjoys a good amount of breeze. This gravity-type dam is a work of stone-masonry. Measuring 1,200 feet in length and 138 feet in width, the dam has 13 chute spillways with a capacity of a whopping 4,518 cubic yards per second! The water is said to be 142 feet at its deepest. There is even a “baby dam” to the right of the main dam. The reservoir can hold a maximum of 443,230,000 cubic metres of water.

3. Thekkady : Hardly 10 minutes from Periyar National Park by car, the small town of Thekkady is more than just a tourist spot with tea estates. Spread over the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills, this town is famous for its spices, particularly cardamom. Located in the Idukki district, Thekkady enjoys a dramatic landscape of lush mountains and wide lakes. One will also find well kept gardens and spice plantations that are worth a visit.

4. Sabarimala : Located inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the Sabarimala temple complex is one of the most visited Hindu temples in southern India. Sabarimala Temple is dedicated to Ayyappan, a Hindu deity who, according to mythology, remained celibate all his life. The temple complex, although located on a hill itself, is lucky to be surrounded by umpteen other hills. Along with the gorgeous view of the mountains, devotees will also find dense forests in its vicinity. Be prepared for the crowds when you visit Sabarimala.

5. Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple : About 10 km from the wildlife reserve, this Hindu temple takes a little more than half an hour to reach by road. At an altitude of 1,337 metres above sea level, Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple is open to tourists only during the religious festival of Chitra Pournami. This temple is said to have been built over 2,000 years ago by the ruler of the region of ancient Tamilakam, Cheran Chenguttuvan.

6. Suruli Falls : This beautiful waterfall is located more than 50 km away from the national park, and takes almost a couple of hours to reach. Originating from the Meghamalai range of mountains, Suruli Falls is a cascading waterfall with two steps. With a total height of 150 feet, the falls drop into a pool before falling again from a height of 40 feet. The falls are fed by the waters of the Suruli River.

7. Kakki Reservoir : A 15-minute car ride over a distance of a little less than 8 km from Periyar Reserve will bring you to Kakki Reservoir. Located inside the Ranni Reserve Forest, this reservoir lets out its waters to the River Pamba in the form of Kakki tributary. An interesting outing and picnic spot, the lake was actually formed as a result of the construction of two dams, Anathode dam and Kakki dam on the Kakki tributary.

8. Parunthumpara Hill View Point : If you drive for about an hour, covering almost 15 km along NH 183A, you will arrive at a location that offers unbelievable views of nature. Located in the Idukki district, Parunthumpara is most notable for its view point atop the hill. Enjoy some snacks along the road and hire an offroad jeep to better enjoy the windy surroundings. There is ample parking for those arriving by car or bike. If you prefer to walk, take a stroll along the barricaded promenade and relish the views of the verdant valleys, waterfalls and misty mountains.

9. Thekkady Rose Park : Only 5 km from the national park, Thekkady Rose Park is a botanical garden centred around roses. Apart from various coloured roses, you will also find other flowering plants at the park which costs INR 50 per head to enter. For those seeking a shorter adventure, there are also half-day rafting options. Like the full-day experience, they include 3-4 hours of trekking and an hour of rafting.

Timings: The full-day program operates from 8 am to 5 pm while the half-day programs operate in two slots: from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Ticket Prices: The full-day bamboo rafting adventure is priced at INR 2900 per person, and includes tea, snacks, and a packed lunch. The half-day option costs INR 2200 per person and includes packed food for participants.

Walking and Hiking

The nature walks at Periyar National Park are ideal for those looking for a brief yet fulfilling day of trekking. The treks, encompassing a distance of 4-5 km and lasting approximately 2.5 hours, lead you through various scenic trails within the park.

Jungle Scout Night Trek

This is a unique one. You can actually join a night-time trekking patrol in the park. It’s a whole different experience to be in the jungle at night.

This three-hour trek includes an armed guard and two guides for each group, limited to a maximum of six people.

It’s important to note that children under 12 years are not permitted.

This night safari is an excellent opportunity to explore the wilderness under the starry sky and experience the nocturnal activities of its wildlife.

Timings: This program is conducted between 7 pm to 4 am in three shifts: from 7 pm to 10 pm, 10 pm to 1 am, and 1 am to 4 am

Ticket Prices: The cost for this night trek is INR 1500, making it an affordable yet exciting way to experience the forest’s nocturnal life and contribute to its protection.

This article logs our experience of boat safari in Thekkady and we would talk a lot many things about Thekkady – its location, history, and the impressions during the ride.

Call of Jungles

Jungles keep calling us. When its long that Jaishree and I have visited a wildlife sanctuary, this silent call gets loud and clear, the impressions and images of wild-terrain start floating in our eyes and we start missing the wilderness and its rich flora and fauna.

This affair with jungles started couple of days after we exchanged marital vows. During our honeymoon trip when we were trying to understand and accommodate each other, and a never ending affair was about to begin, someone else also silently creeped up in our lives.

It happened during the visit to the Veerappan land of Bandipur. Jungle of Bandipur left us mesmerized. We sighted a playful elephant family, witnessed a deer falling prey to a group of wild dogs; becoming non-existent within blink of eyes.

With over a decade of living together, as our admiration and dependence on each other kept growing, this third angle, the jungles, also managed to retain its never ending charm and magnetism and both of us long for any visit to wildlife.

Where is Thekkady

So when we were planning a trip to Kerela, Thekkady was first in the itinerary. The name Thekkady is derived from the word “thekku” which means teak. 

Thekkady is situated about 257 km from  Trivandrum , 145 km from  Cochin International Airport and 114 km from  Kottayam  railway station. Thekkady is located 4 km away from  Kumily , a plantation town in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. 

Thekkady sits in the lap of scented cardamom hills. It is India’s largest and most visited wildlife sanctuary spread over an area of around 777 sq Km.

History of Thekkady

Till 19th century Thekkady Jungle area was mostly forestland and the hunting ground of the King of Travancore.

However, during that period British started to make further inroads everywhere and realized that Thekkady’s weather is optimal for tea and coffee plantation. This realization resulted in forest land quickly getting converted into tea, coffee, ginger, cinnamon and other spice farms.

This sudden and rapid increase in plantation farms alarmed Maharaja of Travancore and to prevent his favorite hunting ground from further encroachments, he declared 600 square km of this area as reserve forest and christened it Nellikkampetty sanctuary .

Legend of killing of an elephant resulting in getting this region converted into a sanctuary

According to another legend in 1934 killing of an elephant by a British soldier made Maharaja of Travancore remorseful. In that “Ashokan Moment” he realized the significance of conservation and turned the forests around the lake into a sanctuary.

Though, I find this legend hard to believe, it is possible that Maharaja used that incident as pretext to make his decision acceptable. In 1978 this sanctuary was declared part of Project tiger and now it is also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Jungles are not only for wild cats

As we are talking about tiger reserve, I would like to share an observation.

Our numerous visits to jungle slowly and silently introduced us to all the living things in jungle; bugs, wild flowers, medicinal plants, big trees, birds, reptiles and many more. Together they all constitute the jungle.

When one visits Jungles dreaming only about spotting ferocious cats, no doubt he returns disappointed. Once one opens to all the possibilities, jungles reveal their beauty. Then if one gets to see the cats, whose sightings are rare, it becomes icing on the cake.

Bus Ride from Munnar to Kumily

Resuming the trip , from Munnar we took a bus to Kumily – a small town at the periphery of Thekkady . This town is also known as the spice garden of Kerala.

It was a beautiful journey with breathtaking views. It was one of those journeys when you lose the desire to reach destination and want that journey never ends.

We unsuccessfully tried to capture the beauty of surroundings in our camera and ended up making grudging complaint that the bus is moving too fast, followed with a promise that next time on this route we would hire a taxi, enjoying the journey with halts at our will. After all,

Kumily is about four km from the Sanctuary. This erstwhile kingdom of Thekkumkoor kings is today a strip of tourist centers, hotels, ayurvedic massage centers and spice shops.

Boat Safari in Thekkady

Next day, when we reached the sanctuary, like all first time tourists in Thekkady, we too rushed to buy tickets for KTDC conducted boat-trip that lasts for around two and half hours. While the boat returned from the previous trip, there gathered big crowd to embark and we rushed to occupy a good viewing position.

This boat-trip of Thekkady is on the Periyar Lake.

Between 1887 and 1895, British constructed Mullaperiyar dam at the confluence of Mullayar River and Periyar River to supply water to the dry parts of Tamilnadu. Construction of the dam resulted in creation of twenty six square km of artificial Periyar Lake, the dam’s reservoir, that enhanced the beauty of wild area around. The maximum depth of Periyar Lake is about 140 feet deep.

The Story of Pennycuick – The man who constructed dam on the Periyar River

Pennycuick is revered in Tamilnadu. Tamil Farmers offer “Pennycuick Pongal” at harvest time (which generally coincides with Pennycuick’s birthday) as thanks for the dam that changed their lives.

According to those benefited from the construction of this dam, Periyar River used to flow 300 Km in Kerala before emptying wastefully in Arabian Sea. And there was small Vaigai river, which flowed east into Madurai and beyond. During summer, the Vaigai often dried up, many a time not even reaching Madurai.

Pennycuick felt that if part of the Periyar, which emptied into the Arabian Sea, could be diverted eastwards it could save the wastage of water and would be a big boon for farmers of the region. He realized the advantage of building a dam in the province across its largest river (the Periyar, which literally means “big river”) that flowed in the forest areas (mullai). Pennycuick settled down to work at his modest cottage in Idukki. Locals say he spoke fluent Tamil and relished biryani. It was this dream of Pennycuick that resulted in the construction of Mullaiperiyar dam.

He dammed the Periyar river at its confluence with the smaller Muallaiyar river and then diverted the water from the reservoir through a 1.6 Km long tunnel to feed the Suruliyar river and the Vaigai dam. This water passes through a grid of canals and irrigate vast tract of water-scarce land in the Southern region of Tamil Nadu. This water thus become the life-line for farmers of Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram district.

The construction of the dam impacted today’s over 2.17 Lakh acre of paddy, cultivated by 32,000 small farmers.

His first construction was washed away by torrent of rain in 1890. He is said to have wept and struggled to collect funds to construct another dam. British government was skeptical to his plans, however, the Chettiars of the region were convinced and donated liberally for his cause and helped him re-build the dam.

Current Controversy and Fear about the Dam

Kerala and Tamilnadu Governments are sparring for long about the operation of Mullaperiyar dam. There are concerns from Kerala Government about the safety of this gravity dam built using lime-surkhi (burnt brick powder) mortar, while the importance of this water for Tamilnadu government is understandable. The capacity of the dam is 152 Feet and discussions are ongoing between two governments to reduce this amount to avoid any accidents.

Impressions during the boat safari in Thekkady

As this lake is result of construction of a dam on Periyar River many trees could be seen submerged in the water. The boat sliced through the placid water of the lake, perturbing the silence of the Jungle, generating undulating waves gently kissing the banks, interrupted occasionally by the stumps of the trees trying to break free from the water.

Even when these trees are reduced to nothing but stumps they provide nesting and resting place to water birds – a generosity suiting to these magnanimous living beings.

Why Boat Safari in Thekkady?

One of the charm and in my opinion the only reason this boat ride may pass as wildlife safari is the possibility to spot wild elephants at the shore, frolicking in water.

Few years after our visit to Thekaddy, the elephant sighting led to a major mishappening when after sighting the elephant herd on the shore, tourists rushed to one side of the boat resulting in the capsize and death of several of them.

Best time to do boat safari in Thekkady

When we visited Thekkady there were ample rains, not the best time for wildlife safari. The best time for animal sightings in Thekaddy is March and April, when water reservoirs inside Jungle start to dry and more and more of wild animals are driven to the Lake to quench their thirst.

The Lake Palace of Thekkady

Our first halt was at Edapalayam Lake Palace, a palace in the midst of lake, to let the guest of this Palace disembark.

Maharaja of Travancore constructed this building to entertain his guests. It is now being converted into a heritage hotel, a global trend. I belong to Udaipur, a place that boast of a more popular Lake Palace . I was unaware of another lake palace in distant south and hence was pleasantly surprised to it.

Boat safari or a Lake Cruise?

The boat was crowded and the noise of its engine and the people on board was enough to put off any serious wild life enthusiast. I lowered my expectation and started to treat it more as a lake cruise than a wildlife safari.

It helped me notice the beauty of surroundings. It was a cloudy day. The clouds were casting a spell on mighty Sun and turned the burning sun-rays into soothing blessings; perfect weather to cruise in dazzling green surroundings.

It was a nice and relaxing cruise but still the desire and the feel of real Jungle was missing. In the next article I will write about the walking tour of the jungle that quashed this unsatisfactory feeling and gave us the feel of this beautiful jungle.

Periyar Tiger Reserve

Saddled in the southern region of the Western Ghats, spread across an area of 777 sq. km of forest land and home to a luxuriant collection of different species of flora and fauna is the Periyar Tiger Reserve. This spectacular stretch of greenery gets its name from the River Periyar which has its origin deep inside the reserve. The reserve also offers a host of eco-tourism programmes to the travellers.  For centuries, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady has been host to the most exquisite flora and fauna in the country and nature lovers throng to it in great numbers. JUNGLE SAFARIS

Bamboo Rafting

This memorable day-long rafting cum trekking programme through the pristine waters and the riches forest of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Visitors can also get an opportunity to sight wildlife as close quarters. A maximum of 5 visitors can go in a single raft and there are 3 rafts available per, all of them plying simultaneously. The package is available in two slots – Full day and Half day.  Reporting time - 7.45 am

Tribal Dance

Periyar Tiger Reserve is a model worldwide for the harmonious co-existence between indigenous tribal communities and the forests. There are six tribal communities nestled inside the reserve such as Mannans, Paliyans, Malayarayans, Mala Pandarams, Uralis and Ulladans. The tribal art performance provides an exclusive opportunity to witness the rich cultural heritage of Paliyan's and Mannans' tribal dances. This one-hour tribal dance performance also includes a brief introduction to the tribal communities, information on various musical instruments and costumes used for the ance performance as well as a memorable photo session with these tribal communities. It is a part of community based eco-tourism programmes at Periyar.

TREKKING TRAILS

Nature Walk

This trekking package provides one with a unique opportunity for watching birds, butterflies and the impressive wildlife of the Tiger Reserve. The Walk comprises of a host of trails traversing through a mosaic of habitats of the reserve. A walk through the trail which winds its way through the incredible landscape comprising of moist deciduous and evergreen forests interspersed with marshy grasslands offers a rare opportunity to witness the many splendours of nature. 

This guided trekking programme which lasts for two-and-half hours and traverses a distance of 4-5 km is offered in six time slots.  Time slots: 07.00 AM, 07.30AM, 10.00 AM, 10.30 AM, 02.00 PM and 02.30 PM

Rs. 350/- per person (for a group of minimum of four, maximum of six) Rs. 1400/- per trek Ticket rates do not include Entrance fees

It is an interpretive sandal protection trekking programme offering excellent opportunity to observe birds, butterflies and other wildlife through a range of habitats during the 4-5 km 3-hours walk. These programme are offered between 7 am to 3 pm in different nature trails inside the Park. A maximum of 5 persons can go for trekking at a time along each trail accompanied by a trained tribal guide. It is a programme where one can feel nature’s whispers and her sighs! Time slots: 07.00 AM, 07.30AM, 10.00 AM, 10.30 AM, 02.00 PM and 02.30 PM 

Jungle Scout

This eco-tourism package is a regular guided night trekking programme in the periphery of the eco-development zone of the Tiger Reserve. Along with the company of armed guards, this programme starts at 19.00 hrs and ends at 04.00 hrs. Explore the serene stretch at night and it lets one immerse in the grandeur of the woods at night.

Rs. 1200/- per person (Minimum Rs. 2400/- per trip)

Border Hiking

This is a day-long hiking programme within the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The undulating terrains and altitudinal hiking of 900 m to 1300 m will give you the glimpse of the lofty slopes bordering the region. Gaur, sloth bear and elephants are often sighted apart from birds and butterflies from here. This programme is open to a maximum of 10 tourists in 2 different groups. The trekkers along with two guides participate in the programme which starts at 08.00 hrs and ends in the evening. The package includes food also.  Timing: From 08.00 AM to 05.00 PM

JUNGLE CAMPS

Periyar Tiger Trail

Embark on the trail of the majestic cat in the Tiger Trail package, a trekking and camping programme where you can also stay inside your tent, and listen to the drama of the wilderness in solitude.  This guided trekking that traverses a distance of 20 to 35 km lets one observe the wildlife and sometimes even rewards the traveller with chance sightings of the tiger. En route one may be treated to vegetarian meals and can later camp in the tents inside the forest. This package is available in two slots, one is one night and two days (1N/2D) and the other is two nights and three days (2N/3D). It is conducted twice in a week and prior booking is needed. A group may include a maximum of six persons.  Timing: Starts from 09.00 AM

Bamboo Grove

The stay over programme provides eco-lodge accommodations inside bamboo thickets. 15 bamboo huts with double-bedded occupancy with hygienic and modern furnishing are available. The package includes an orientation programme, a visit to a tribal colony, wildlife film shows, bird watching, trekking and a complimentary boat ride on Periyar Lake. Lunch, dinner and breakfast are included in the package The package excludes children of below 12 years.

The watchtowers of Periyar offer one a brilliant visual of the entire place. A stay gives you a panoramic view of the entire area, watching the inhabitants of this ancient site going about their day to day activities. Boat Safari is the best option to visit the forest and wilds closely . Lake/river is the prime site to watch animals. If you visit the place in summer, then most of the mammals can be seen playing alongside the water. Elephants, sambars etc come to the lake/river very often. In summer, when the moisture evaporates from the forests, mammals come out to drink water.

You can see a number of migratory birds here. Native birds can be seen throughout the year, but around 150 rare species of birds can be witnessed in the months of October to May . Hence, this time period is considered good for boat safari. Necessary permits should be taken from the respective authorities of the park and a guide should be hired to be on safer side. This is important to get the best view of Periyar Wildlife .

The river is considered the base of life in Periyar. Therefore, a boat safari is the best way to explore most of the flora and fauna species. The boats take off in clusters of five to six, moving silently from one shore to the other. A tourist can get a good view of Periyar wildlife from this means of trip. It is preferable to go on this safari between 4-4:30 pm. You might get a chance to witness a tiger killing its most favorite prey “sambar deer'.

Boating in Thekkady – Instructions for Guests

1) Guest must produce the Unique Identification number along with the original id proof at check post for verification and issue of the entrance ticket.

2) Entrance ticket issued from check post is required to avail boat boarding pass and any other Eco-tourism programs.

3) Guest shall report at the Entrance Check post at least one hour prior to boating time and at least half an hour prior to the boating time at the special online counter at the Boat landing.

4) It is mandatory to wear life jackets while boating

5) E-Ticket will be sent to given email id if you are booking an online ticket

6) Any person while inside Periyar Tiger Reserve, leaving litters; smoking & consuming alcohol in public; illegally entering forests; speeding vehicles; blowing horns; playing music systems; parking vehicles outside the parking zone; feeding, teasing, disturbing wild animals; keeping pet animals; unauthorised trekking and picnicking; keeping firearms, wildlife traps, poisonous or other substances injurious to wildlife; causing a fire in Periyar Tiger Reserve, breaching the lawful directions of the park staff on duty will be fined suitably and/or penalised as per the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 or as deemed fit.

7) CBET programs are subjected to minimum people requirements, the Otherwise minimum charge is applicable.

8) Please obey the instructions of Boat staff / Officers on duty

9) Please keep the valid entrance ticket always with you (issued from check post against your Unique Identification number) for verification by forest officials

10) The Ticket may be cancelled without any prior notice if any Administrative contingency occurs

11) Cancellation policy applies for all online bookings

12) Wildlife sighting is a chance, be patient and silent during a boat cruise.
