Around the 17th and 18th century, Breisach was dominated by the French and the Habsburg. The fortifications were destructed in the 18th century. The city was bombarded in 1793 and at the end of the Second World War (85%).

Unsere charmante Stadt liegt direkt am Rhein und ist damit sozusagen das Bindeglied zwischen den beiden Urlaubsregionen Schwarzwald und Elsass. Das Wahrzeichen der Stadt ist das St. Stephansmünster, das hoch über der Stadt und dem Rhein thront. Von dort hat man einen herrlichen Ausblick über die Rheinebene bis zum Schwarzwald im Osten und den Vogesen im Westen.

Von Breisach aus kann man die Region dies- und jenseits des Rheins bequem mit dem Fahrrad, mit Bus oder Bahn, mit dem eigenen Auto, zu Fuß oder sogar mit dem Schiff erkunden.    

Eine halbe Stunde entfernt liegen Freiburg – Schwarzwaldmetropole und Universitätsstadt – so wie Colmar, das Zentrum des elsässischen Weinbaus. Beide Städte kann man von Breisach aus mit Bahn oder Bus sehr gut erreichen. Nur einige Kilometer entfernt – auf der anderen Rheinseite – liegt Breisachs Partnerstadt Neuf-Brisach. Die in Europa einzigartige Festung wurde von Vauban, dem Baumeister Ludwigs XIV errichtet und steht seit Juli 2008 auf der UNESCO Weltkulturerbe-Liste. 

Breisach ist eine beliebte Station für Tourenradler, die den Rheinradweg – die EuroVelo 15 – befahren. Der zertifizierte Weg führt auf beiden Seiten des Flusses von den Alpen bis zur Rheinmündung in die Nordsee. Es lohnt sich aber auch, hier ein paar Tage Radurlaub zu verbringen. Denn die Region zwischen Freiburg und Colmar mit Breisach in der Mitte gelegen bietet ein großes Netz an beschilderten Radwegen an. Dazu gibt es eine passende Radkarte mit über 30 Tourenvorschlägen.

Wer es bequemer mag, kann mit dem E-Bike (Pedelec) auf Tour gehen. Es gibt eine Reihe von Verleihstationen in der Region.

Zum Wandern laden die nahe gelegenen Weinregionen Kaiserstuhl und Tuniberg ein. Dort steht ein weites, gut ausgeschildertes Wegenetz mit über 500 Kilometern Wander- und Themenpfaden  zur Verfügung. Besonders empfehlenswert sind dabei der Burgunderpfad am Tuniberg und der zertifizierte „Kaiserstuhlpfad“, der zu den ausgewählten Qualitätswanderwegen Deutschlands zählt.

Immer populärer werden Kreuzfahrten auf dem Rhein zwischen Amsterdam und Basel. Die Schiffe mit Passagieren aus aller Herren Länder legen regelmäßig in Breisach an – aufgrund von Corona kommen die Gäste überwiegend aus Deutschland und den angrenzenden europäischen Ländern. Hier stehen eine Stadtbesichtigung oder Kellereiführung auf dem Programm oder Ausflüge in den Schwarzwald.

Die Schiffe der Breisacher Fahrgast-Schifffahrt dagegen unternehmen Rundfahrten auf dem Rhein sowie Tagesausflüge nach Colmar, Straßburg und Basel. Darüber hinaus gibt es Themenfahrten mit Programm und kulinarischem Angebot. Besonders beliebt bei Jung und Alt ist der „Dampf im Elsass“ – eine kombinierte Fahrt mit dem Schiff und einem historischen Dampfzug auf französischer Seite.

In Breisach selbst sollte man auf jeden Fall einen Rundgang über den Münsterberg unternehmen mit Besichtigung des St. Stephansmünsters und des Rheintors. Außerdem empfehlen wir eine Wein- oder Sektprobe direkt beim Erzeuger. Der Badische Winzerkeller, eine der größten Kellereien in Europa, bietet Führungen durch den imposanten Holzfasskeller an. Die Geldermann Privatsektsektkellerei kreiert Sekte nach dem traditionellen Flaschengärungsverfahren direkt unter dem Breisacher Münsterberg.

Description

Breisach is located directly on the Rhine, what means near the border to France. The distinctive landmark of the town is the cathedral of St. Stephansmünster. Built on a hill called the Münsterberg, it overlooks the Rhine valley and the houses of the town.

St Stephansmünster

Plonked on a hill above the centre for all to behold in wonder, the Romanesque and Gothic St Stephansmünster shelters a faded fresco cycle, Martin Schongauer’s The Last Judgment (1491), and a magnificent altar triptych (1526) carved from linden wood. From the tree-shaded square outside, the Schänzletreppe steps lead down to the Gutgesellentor, the gate where Pope John XXIII was scandalously caught fleeing the Council of Constance in 1415.

What’s good about it.

Located on the Rhine River sits the small town of Breisach, well-known as the gateway to Germany’s Black Forest. Despite 85% of the town being flattened during World War II, it has been successfully restored. Today it’s a quaint town with cobblestone streets lined with pastel-painted houses, shops, and cafes, plus a cathedral and medieval prison tower. 

Best for 

Explore Breisach’s cobbled streets stopping in at shops, and sampling traditional fare at cafes and restaurants. Visit the “Hagenbachturm” (Hagenbach Tower), the medieval prison tower, and the town’s iconic landmark, St. Stephansmünster (St. Stephen’s), a beautiful Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. 

Take a scenic drive through the area’s mountain landscape to the Black Forest. Visit a local workshop to witness a cuckoo clock-making or glass-blowing demonstration, see how Black Forest Cake is made or take a forest stroll.

The preferred time to visit Breisach is from June to September when the weather is warm and pleasant and there is limited rainfall. November and December are chillier with some snow but is favoured by those wanting to visit Europe’s iconic Christmas markets.

St Stephan’s Minster

Visit Breisach – Self Guided Tour

River cruises provide excellent maps for a self guided tour when you visit Breisach. First, walk from the dock up the short but steep lanes to the fortified Old Town. Your first stop is the cathedral of St Stephan’s Minster inside the walls of the Old Town. St Stephan’s Minster was built in the 1200s. From St Stephan’s Minster there are pleasant views over the new town below and the rolling hills of the Kaiser-stuhl. On the square beside the cathedral is the Rathaus Breisach (City Hall) .

In the middle of the small Old Town is the Radbrunnen Tower (Radbrunnenturm) with its strange exterior workings for this early 1100s water well pump. At the far end of the Old Town is the festival area and the Tulla Tower, which forms part of the theater stage. Descending from this end of the Old Town to the Rhine leads to the Rhine Tower (Rheintor) and a pleasant walk back to the river cruise dock.

Get to Breisach by Rail

Since the destruction of the bridge on the Rhine during World War II, rail transportation has been restricted to the German side of the town. You can get to Breisach by rail from Freiburg in 30 minutes. You can also get to Breisach by rail from Riegel am Kaiserstuhl, north of Freiburg. To the west, Colmar, France is a 30 minute bus ride.

Breisach is not near any major airports. The main way visitors get to Breisach is on a Rhine River Cruise. The river cruise industry has made Breisach a standard stop for cruises between Basel and Amsterdam, but passengers do not start or finish voyages here.

Most Rhine River Cruises provide two options for river cruise shore excursions. The most popular option is a bus tour shore excursion through the Black Forest. The route takes you to picturesque view points and through numerous small villages such as Sankt Märgen. This river cruise shore excursion stops at popular tourist centers such as Hofgut Sternen. At Hofgut Sternen you can watch artisans create traditional Black Forest cuckoo clocks. The cuckoo clocks are displayed and sold too. If you find a clock you like, they will ship it home for you.

The second option for a river cruise shore excursion is a bus tours to the quaint historical village of Colmar, France. Visitors who aren’t on a river cruises can coordinate tours of the Black Forest and Colmar through tour operators in Freiburg, Germany.

Breisach weather is sunny and warm in the summer, while winters are cloudy and cold. Average highs in the July and August are around 80 F (27 C), while average lows are 60 F (16 C). In December and January average highs are a few degrees above freezing, while lows hover around the freezing mark. Rainfall is slightly higher in the summer months.

Breisach is a very small town on the German side of Upper Rhine River. Across the river is Neuf Brisach, France.  Germans pronounce the name “bry sack” and the French call it “bree sack”. The town had early Celtic and Roman occupations and was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Breisach has seen a boom in tourism since becoming a standard port of call for river cruises between Basel and Amsterdam. Most of the Rhine River Cruise shore excursions head from Breisach by bus to the Black Forest near Freiburg, Germany. Day trips also visit the picturesque town of Colmar in France. Old Town Breisach is located on an ancient fortified hill top with pleasant views over the rolling hills called the Kaiser-stuhl (Emperor’s seat). I have visited Breisach in December of 2022 and there was this unique sculpture of skeletons, soldiers and bees and what not. It was under a building and was circular in shape. I am trying to find more info on it but can’t seem it get anywhere. Wondering if you could help? I think it was under St Stephens church but could be wrong.

An Evening Stroll Through Breisach, Germany

Situated on the Rhine River, the town of Breisach am Rhein is often called the gateway to the Black Forest. It’s a popular place for cruise ships to dock; from there their passengers can visit the Black Forest, local wine towns, and France’s Alsace region.

After spending the morning touring the Black Forest, many of our shipmates enjoyed the afternoon wandering around Breisach, visiting its cathedral and exploring its streets. We didn’t, though. We signed up to take the optional afternoon trip to Colmar.

While it was everything we had expected and more, our dinner companions told us that they’d really enjoyed touring picturesque Breisach. They urged us to not miss the chance to see it.

So we told our tired feet to stop complaining, grabbed our cameras, and headed into town. After all, we might never have another chance to visit!

Breisach’s medieval heart

We love the atmosphere that medieval towns exude, and Breisach has it “in spades.” It was a significant stronghold of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century and it’s still very well preserved.

Passing through the city’s ancient gates, we slowly meandered along the narrow, cobbled streets. The sun was setting and street lights lit the cobblestones, bathing everything in a golden hue.

Our cruisemates were right: Breisach is a charming town. Many of the town’s old homes sported window boxes overflowing with flowers.

St. Stephan’s cathedral

It’s impossible to miss Stephansmünster, the best-known sight in Breisach. Like most cathedrals, it sits on the highest point, presiding over the heart of the old city.

St. Stephan’s Cathedral dates from the 13th early century, not long after Breisach became a free imperial town. It took nearly three centuries to build, and as a result the building contains both Gothic and Romanesque elements.

The doors to the church were closed at this late hour, so we walked around its exterior instead. The empty courtyard, peaceful and quiet, was dimly lit from the lamps reflecting off the cathedral’s walls.

We sat there for a while, listening to the leaves rustling in the warm summer breeze, and enjoyed the view from the courtyard’s waist-high wall. It offers a lovely panorama of the surrounding countryside, and in the evening you can see lights in the lowlands across the Rhine.

As charming as the village was, we didn’t linger to explore its shops. We preferred to remain in the past just a little while longer, savoring the lingering feeling of medieval Breisach’s past.

Our stroll back to the ship was just as peaceful. Except for the occasional car passing by, the ancient stone walls and gateways made it feel like the town had been frozen in time.

Haven’t been to the Black Forest yet so found this post a nice little teaser. I do love a nice, old German town at night, though. There’s something special about these cities.

The town of Breisach has a lively history of more than 3000 years.  The building of the famous cathedral of St.Stephan started at the end of the 12th century and was finished three centuries later.

The town was devasted twice in times of war in the year 1793 and 1945.
