New spicy Casey McQuiston book 'The Pairing' comes out this summer: What fans can expect

casey mcquiston tour

Move over “hot girl summer” – “hot bisexual summer” is ready for its moment and Casey McQuiston ’s new novel “ The Pairing ” is here to usher it in.

If there’s one thing McQuiston knows, it’s queer romance – their past three novels prove as much. But “The Pairing" (on sale Aug. 6 from St. Martin's Griffin) is a much more indulgent read than its predecessors. Sexuality and gender are a constant conversation in McQuiston's work, but this forthcoming novel dives further into how they interact and shape our identities.

“I’ve written three books where the main character is openly bisexual – none of those books are ever described as bisexual ,” McQuiston tells USA TODAY. “I was curious, 'How do I write a book that is inherently bi?'”

We spoke with McQuiston about what fans can expect from “The Pairing.”

What is 'The Pairing' by Casey McQuiston about?

Set during a three-week European food and wine tasting tour, “The Pairing” is an exes-to-lovers novel. Theo and Kit have known each other for most of their lives, first as childhood best friends and later as lovers. But four years ago, they suffered a brutal breakup just before they were supposed to embark on a trip to Europe. They haven’t seen each other since.

Things have changed, mostly for the better. Theo is on the way to becoming a sommelier and Kit went to pastry school and now bakes at a prestigious Paris restaurant.

They’ve also both got vouchers for the tasting tour, valid for 48 months.

It's not until boarding the bus that they realize they're cashing the vouchers in at the same time, completely altering the tone of the three-week vacation. As the forced proximity lingers, Theo offers up a friendly bet that turns into a full-on international hookup competition with a chance to prove who really won the breakup.

McQuiston drew inspiration from their own European adventure, which began while visiting the set of the “Red, White & Royal Blue” movie in London. After writing their last novel, “I Kissed Shara Wheeler,” in their New York City apartment during the pandemic lockdowns, McQuiston knew book number four needed to be a physical experience.

“I was just so hungry – literally and figuratively – to get back out in the world and discover it, to reconnect with the joy of writing,” McQuiston says.

How spicy is 'The Pairing'?

Speaking from reader experience – very. There’s a lot to indulge in with “The Pairing." Steeped heavily in food, art, wine and culture, this book ignites the senses in more ways than one.

For the lay-reader (aka those not on BookTok), “spiciness” refers to the sexual content of a book. Given that the driving force behind the plot is a hookup competition, you can bet “The Pairing” gets a little hot and bothered.

“The Pairing” draws inspiration from the “slutty bisexual” trope – an often harmful characterization of bi people. In real life, bisexual people face stereotypes of being greedy and hypersexual. In media, many bisexual characters become lazy plot devices to demonstrate promiscuity .

With this novel, McQuiston wanted to give complex bisexual characters a chance to lean into it .

“When we try to subvert and take apart tropes, it’s not always enough to just say ‘that’s not true,’” McQuiston says. “Some people who are bi are also very sexual people, very open, and that is as much a part of the experience as being like ‘I’m a bisexual person in a four-year partnership.’”

McQuiston has been open about writing the stories they wished they had growing up. For this novel, that means portraying a “healthy sex positivity” for queer and trans folks.

“It was hard, when I was younger, to find accessible romance novels that depicted sex, gender in a way that was relatable to me,” McQuiston says. “The idea of casual sex being something that doesn’t have to make you feel shameful. It’s something that can be really cool and spiritual and intimate and transformative.”

Meet the main characters of 'The Pairing'

Theo Flowerday is a classic “leader of the pack” who lacks the self-confidence to see themselves that way. A defiant nepo baby and a jack-of-all-trades, Theo is “inspired by hot people
who work with their hands,” McQuiston says.

And then you’ve got Kit Fairfield, a dreamy French American pastry chef with a Rilke poem for every occasion that no one can resist falling in love with. McQuiston describes Kit as a “fairy prince” and “Howl Pendragon-coded,” a reference to Studio Ghibli’s “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

“I feel like I’m exposing myself here,” McQuiston admits. “This one North Star I kept coming back to was the dynamic between Legolas and Gimli.”

It’s not a “Lord of the Rings” fanfiction, they jokingly clarify (the two characters are often read as queer-coded ), but that’s often McQuiston's starting point when creating characters – start with a well-loved trope and build out from there.

How to get in your 'Pairing' era

“The Pairing” doesn’t come out until August, but if you can’t wait to live in this world of bisexual fairy princes, baguette-making classes and hot summer nights, McQuiston has you covered with a fool-proof checklist.

1. Host a dinner party .

Fun glassware, mood-lighting, tinned fish and mouth-watering hors d'oeuvres make a perfect pregame for “The Pairing.”

“The most common review I get from my friends and family who’ve read it is ‘It made me so hungry and it made me want to travel,’” McQuiston says.

2. Chat with your local sommelier .

McQuiston spent time chatting with wine experts and taking wine classes while researching “The Pairing.” Why not do the same?

“Go to your local wine store or a neighborhood restaurant that’s known for having very good wine and just talk to the somm for half an hour and let them tell you about wine,” McQuiston says. “Let them sell you something you’ve never had before.”

3. Break out your flowy button-downs.

“The only bisexual vibe for the summer,” I joke. McQuiston agrees.

4. Stock up on sunscreen .

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Safety first, after all.

“Please don't forget your SPF while you’re out there being sluts,” McQuiston says.

EXCLUSIVE: Get a first look at Casey McQuiston’s next novel, ‘The Pairing’ — their 'spiciest' book yet

Casey McQuiston has written their "spiciest" book yet.

Their third adult novel, "The Pairing," brought McQuiston on a culinary tour of Europe — all part of the research required for writing about a pair of ex-lovers who find themselves on the same vacation.

In "The Pairing," which comes out Aug. 6, exes Kit and Theo meet again on a shared food and wine tour. In an attempt to prove there's no lingering feelings, they embark on a "European hookup competition" — essentially, who can get with the most people.

"It's not just about making each other jealous, but it's about like, proving to you that I'm fine," McQuiston tells TODAY.com in an exclusive interview for a cover reveal of "The Pairing." "It's about finding parts of you in other people and making that enough for tonight."

The Pairing

Before writing the book, the Louisiana-born author says they'd never been to the places they wanted to write about. So after going to London to visit the set of the film adaptation of their first book "Red, White & Royal Blue " in summer 2022, they seized the chance to "research."

From London, they went to Paris, Barcelona, Florence and Rome and went on chocolate crawls, tapas tours, sunset sales, trips out to the countryside — essentially "everything I could imagine would spark an idea."

"There were so many little moments that I was like, 'Oh, this is a book,'" they say. "Like when I was in Barcelona, walking through the Gothic Quarter, I would look up and I would see how the apartments there, the streets are so narrow ... You have a balcony, you have a balcony, you have three feet of space between them. I was like, 'That's a scene.'"

McQuiston always has a nickname for their novels. "Red, White & Royal Blue" was known as "Friendly Relations," an innuendo based on the diplomatic term. "One Last Stop" was "Subway Girl," which ended up being a nickname for one of the main characters.

Casey McQuiston

"The Pairing" is also known as "Sluts in Europe," based in part around the idea of exploring the trope of the "slutty bisexual" in a "lighthearted and sensual and transformative way that explores how queer sex can be transformational and affirming," McQuiston explains.

So when they looked up at those nearly adjoined balconies in Barcelona, they saw a metaphor — emotionally apart, yet physically right next to each other — that informed their upcoming book.

"I'm just imagining these two characters going home with two neighbors, and they're both hooking up with their conquest of the evening in neighboring apartments — and there's literally three feet of space between the two," they say.

"It really like completely rebirthed me as an artist and as a writer... All of the time trapped indoors, to be able to go out into the world, reconnect with humanity and art and flavors and everything, I think all of that is in the book," they add.

Below McQuiston walks us through the experiencing of writing "The Pairing" and how it reminded them of why they loved writing in the first place.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

What was the initial inspiration for this book?

I was gearing up to write my fourth book, and I really wanted to reconnect with the joy of creation and the joy of writing and the spark that brought me here in the first place. This thing that was once my passion project, hobby, is now my bread and butter. Sometimes that takes a little bit of the magic out of it.

Could you walk me through the inspiration behind the cover design?

I wanted a cover design that is kind of flirting with literary crossover. I think some of the cover comps I sent were like Sally Rooney and Emma Straub and authors like that who are sort of romance and also fiction.

This book is definitely extremely romance. But I was really trying to bring my A-game on a craft level. I always am attempting to bring my A-game on a craft level, but this time, I really felt when I was writing it, I could tell I was leveling up as an artist and that I had leveled up with time. It's been seven years since I started writing my first book. And so, God, I hope I have grown as an artist since then.

When we were talking about what we wanted the cover to look like, we want it to feel like romance, we want it to read as romance and to have this very evocative, sensual vibe to it. Because it's a super evocative, sensual book. But we also wanted something that showed that it was a little bit of a break from my first two books in terms of like, "This is Casey 2.0."

Compared to “Red, White & Royal Blue” and “One Last Stop,” what’s different about this novel?

From just like a behind-the-scenes point of view, it is the most fun I’ve had writing a book in a long time. And I had tons of fun writing my last two books, but there was something about this one that I got to really bury myself in it in a very fun way. A lot of it is about food and wine and art. And so I got to travel around Europe and call it research. I took wine classes. And I was baking weird little, local French pastries that were specific to the scenes I was writing. It’s really amazing and really rare as a writer to get to have the chance to bury yourself in all of your favorite things and call it research.

I was just having a blast and being totally indulgent. And I think that kind of shows in the book. I think this is definitely my most like indulgent book. I feel like both “Red, White & Royal Blue” and “One Last Stop" had a really intense, high-stakes plot engine behind them, where it’s like, the future of the world or time and space. And this one is like, just about being hot and sweaty in Europe.

I feel like both “Red, White & Royal Blue” and “One Last Stop” had a really intense, high-stakes plot engine behind them, where it’s like, the future of the world or time and space. And this one is like, just about being hot and sweaty in Europe.

I would also say it is my — what is the word that romance readers like to use these days? I would say it’s my spiciest book. I think I’ve been building up my confidence as a writer to be able to publish spicy romance without being self conscious or embarrassed about it.

I’ve always wondered if authors are embarrassed about other people reading their romance novels. Have you felt that and is it embarrassment?

It’s more just like — it’s like that thing where it’s like, even if you have a kid, you don’t want your parents to think about how the kid was made, you know? It’s like, yes, I have written a very successful novel. However, I have to live with the fact that all of my mom’s neighbors know that I have thought about at least three specific sexual scenarios. I don’t love that.

But I find that as I get farther into this career, I am so much less apologetic and so much less embarrassed about sex and pleasure being something that we talk about and that we use as a tool in romance to do really beautiful emotional storytelling. It’s just fun, and it’s OK for that to be the point. Pleasure reading is nothing to be ashamed of, and pleasure writing is nothing to be ashamed of.

But certainly, when I wrote my first book, my mom read it, and I was like, “OK, well please tell me you at least skimmed the sex scenes and didn’t read all of them,” and she’s like, “Oh, no, I read those. I just skimmed like the plot.” I was like, “I wish I didn’t know that.”

Looking back at your career, how has your motivation for writing romance changed over time?

I feel like it's gone through a sort of full circle thing. When I sat down to write my first book, I wanted to write something really fun and really delicious and delightful that people would love to read.

And then, as I started publishing books, and my work started being something that didn't exist only in a vacuum or off my computer, I really wanted to make a difference, and I wanted to write things that were quote unquote "important." And I think that's a really honorable goal to have for any artist. But I think also it's a lot of pressure to put on yourself, and sometimes it can get in the way of just being able to write and to do what you're trying to do. For a while, my motivations and my goals and writing were more externally focused on wanting to write something that would mean something to people and wanting to write something that could change something.

Then I kind of came back around to wanting to write something for fun. Sometimes writing for pleasure is important. And it does change things because — especially when you're writing about queer love and about queer intimacy — it's really important that those things are just allowed to exist for pleasure. That, too, is transgressive, and it makes a difference in the world. I'm really proud of my body of work, and I'm kind of coming back around the circle to the place where I'm like, let's just have a good time, guys.

To give readers a hint of what’s to come with the two main characters of "The Pairing," what are their star signs?

Oh my god, OK. So Theo is a Libra. Theo is a bartender by day, aspiring sommelier by night, and they are completely unserious. Very rarely are they serious about anything, but they’re so charming, they’re so gregarious, they can do anything that they put their mind to. But they have such an inferiority complex in a way, because they’re very much a jack of all trades, master of none. They’ve never really found their way in the world, but my God, can they find their way through any situation? Yeah. When I was giving notes for the audiobook narrator I was like, "Theo sounds like the friend who is always down to help you move, but they’re gonna show up an hour late because they forgot."

Then Kit. I thought a lot about fairy princes. I thought about Legolas, I thought about soft fantasy heroes. He has a sort of ethereal quality, but he’s also into the finest linens and the ripest fruits. He wants the most of everything. He’s deeply a pleasure seeker. He loves art. He’s just very sensitive, very soft, very passionate, very French. And he’s a Taurus. Listen, I love a Taurus. I think Tauruses are the backbone of our society.

If your six main characters — Theo and Kit, Alex and Henry from “Red, White & Royal Blue” and Jane and August from “One Last Stop" — were on a desert island together, what would happen?

So first of all, I feel like Henry and Kit are forming the finer things club. They're sitting in a corner discussing like, artisanal butters. And then I feel like Jane and Theo are like, competing to see who can lift something heavier. Alex is maybe involved in this competition, too. Then I feel like Alex and August are like, both going to try to become the logistical manager of the situation, and they're going to have very different methods, and they're probably going to beef. They're going to become friends in the end, but like, August is going be like, "This is no way to organize." It's going to be like, a spreadsheet and Alex is going to be like, "Please don't question my methods."

Seeing the film adaptation of "Red, White & Royal Blue" in a theater, what was it like seeing people react to your work?

It was an out-of-body experience. Every step of the way with the movie, I was like, the next thing that happens is when it will start feeling real. Surely when I visit the set, it will start feeling real. Surely when I see this trailer, surely when I go to a screening and when I see it on the big screen — Here I am, almost six months later, I'm like, I don't believe that happened.

It's such a surreal experience. I think, as an artist and as a writer, the greatest thing you can hope for is for people to care as much as you do, because you care so much about the characters in the story. And to be in a room full of people that very vocally cared as much as I did was amazing.

It's so funny, because I could tell there were people there who hadn't read the book yet. And so there'd be moments where there'd be like a little moment that is definitely an inside joke with readers of the book that I could just tell certain pockets of the audience were reacting to you. I was like, "My people."

Are you still in touch with the cast ?

The cast is chock full of absolute angels. They are all extremely booked and busy right now. We drop each other Instagram DMs whenever we have time.

Aneesh, who played Amy, was living in the city for a while, and so we would like meet up for dinner and stuff like that. I had dinner with Taylor (Zakhar Perez) a few months ago, shortly after the movie came out. Nick (Galitzine) and I will occasionally DM about video games. They're so sweet, and it's just a great cast. Everybody likes each other so much. I feel really lucky to get to know them.

Are there any potential adaptations of your other works coming down the pipeline?

I have to plead the fifth on that one. I have some assorted things percolating, but nothing I can speak on yet.

THE PAIRING title reveal (10/23/23)

Wcag heading.

Casey mcquiston cover

Casey McQuiston fans everywhere will be thrilled to learn that they will soon be coming out with a new novel in August 2024! THE PAIRING is a romance about two bisexual exes who accidentally end up on the same food and wine tour during their European vacation and challenge each other to a hookup competition to prove they’re over each other except they’re definitely not.

Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends, crushes, in love, and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on the transatlantic flight to their dream European food and wine tour, they exited each other’s lives once and for all. Time apart has done them good. Theo has found confidence as a hustling bartender by night and aspiring sommelier by day, with a long roster of casual lovers. Kit, who never returned to America, graduated as the reigning sex god of his pastry school class and now bakes at one of the finest restaurants in Paris. Sure, nothing really compares to what they had, and life stretches out long and lonely ahead of them, but yeah. It’s in the past. All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened, good for 48 months after its original date and about to expire. Four years later, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately. It’s not until they board the tour bus that they discover they’ve both accidentally had the exact same idea, and now they’re trapped with each other for eighteen days of stunning views, luscious flavors, and the most romantic cities of France, Spain, and Italy. It’s fine. There’s nothing left between them. So much nothing that, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, Kit is totally game. And why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition? But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can’t have.

Casey McQuiston

Meet one of the artists, disruptors, educators, groundbreakers, innovators, and storytellers who all helped make the world a better place for lgbtq+ people..

Amazon Prime Video’s delicious gay romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue took the world by storm when it premiered this summer. But before it was a streaming juggernaut, it was the brainchild of nonbinary bisexual author Casey McQuiston.

The best-selling romance novel is a perfect example of how LGBTQ + representation doesn’t always have to come at the cost of outing, homophobia, transphobia, pain, and/or misery. In fact, RWRB ’s unapologetically sexy, romantic, hilarious, and joyous themes are what made it a powerhouse to begin with. And it’s not lost on McQuiston that one of their biggest accomplishments of the year, they feel, is getting to learn that “queer triumph doesn’t always require a struggle.”

“It’s OK if I spend a week just writing about people like me making out with each other in different fantastical settings, and it’s OK if my triumph of the day is just making breakfast,” they say. “Sometimes simple pleasures are defiant on their own.”

And RWRB is, indeed, a simple pleasure for so many of their fans in the community.

With a fourth book project on the way soon (this being a queer adult rom-com about lost loves, a European tour, food, wine, bisexuality, art, pleasure, and gender), and some top-secret film and television projects they can’t disclose the details of just yet, McQuiston’s media empire is steadily growing. It is a treat to witness younger LGBTQ+ generations get the kind of representative content they’ve long awaited.

“Queer fiction was such a formative experience for me because as a young person, it was the safest place I had to engage with queerness and the closest thing to a tangible queer community I could access,” they say. “So much of my work now as an author is about taking care of that conduit and preserving it for young queer and trans people who need it the way I did.” @casey.mcquiston

See Attached (from Casey McQuiston)

Introducing book 4 ().

casey mcquiston tour

I’m thinking of a galette.

Not a fancy one. No pùte feuilletée, just a simple fruit filling and a rough crust folded over on four sides for shape and structure. When I started contemplating how to explain everything my fourth book is to me, I could almost taste this galette. Apricot filling, lemon zest, clove, egg wash, cinnamon sugar, and those untidy walls of pastry holding it all together.

Thanks for reading See Attached (from Casey McQuiston)! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

The first fold of dough would be the concept of romance as a pleasure genre. A good romance can do a lot of things—illuminate, transgress, teach you the number of eyelets in a period-accurate corset—but the only thing it has to do is give the reader pleasure. Isn’t that incredible? A whole mode of art with that primary purpose? Once, I’d have felt obligated to justify my work as more than that, as if romcoms about queer people had to serve some greater good to be allowed to exist. Now, I hold pleasure in much higher esteem. I think we all should. I think a lot of us probably need to repair our relationship with pleasure, and a romance novel might be the best place to do that. So, I decided I wanted to write a book that first and foremost was about pleasure in every form.

The second fold is maximalism. Depriving yourself of nothing, having anything and everything you want. At some point I thought, how much book can I squeeze into this book? I wanted it to read the way a long trip through Europe feels, sumptuous and indulgent, beyond satiated and close to passing out from all five senses being 24/7 filled with a million things. Why hold anything back? Why settle for one POV when I could have two? Why not two epigraphs and a prologue and a map and a mid-book interlude and half a dozen sex scenes and yet another detailed description of a meal and an epilogue? So, the second pastry wall holding this thing together is the desire for the most of everything.

The third fold is, well, bisexuality. Broadly, a question I’ve asked myself after writing three books with bisexual protagonists: what do I have to write for people to actually call one of these a bisexual novel? More specifically, though, I’m so interested in the stereotype of the slutty bisexual in fiction, and I wanted to rejig it. What if, for some, bisexuality does manifest as being a slut? What is so terrible about being sensual or embodied or horny or just plain old promiscuous, when you have access to the full range of human sexuality and the freedom to fuck around? What about all the ways that interacts with gender? What if I wrote a book where my characters are slutty bisexuals, and they like that about themselves, because it’s expansive and interesting and fun ?

And the last wall of this horny little galette is the simplest and most selfish one: Things I Like. I love travel and eating and drinking good wine, I love thinking about recipes and ingredients, I love Italian renaissance art and hot people and old churches. If the category is indulgence, writing this book was my indulgence.

All of that pastry is wrapped around this beautiful, glossy, fruity (see what I did there) filling—the story itself and the two characters who lead it.

Which brings us to why you’re actually here. No more pastry metaphors in this newsletter, I promise. Let’s talk about this book.

I could not be happier or prouder to introduce you to my fourth book, coming August 6, 2024: THE PAIRING .

Here is the official blurb from my publisher, Macmillan:

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston’s latest romantic comedy, two bisexual exes accidentally book the same European food and wine tour and challenge each other to an international hookup competition to prove they’re over each other. And they are over each other, right?

And here is a little more from me:

Theo is the assistant sommelier at the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Palm Springs. Kit is a chef pñtissier at a luxury hotel in Paris. But before that, they were lifelong best friends turned lovers who planned to spend the rest of their lives together, pursuing their shared love of food and drink. They booked the European food and wine tour of their dreams, boarded their transatlantic flight, and broke up before they even reached their first destination. That was four years ago, and they haven’t spoken since—until they both unknowingly book a solo do-over ticket on the same tour and find themselves trapped on a bus with each other for three weeks through the most beautiful sights and flavors of France, Spain, and Italy. They can handle it, though. Four years is a long time. They can peacefully coexist. In fact, you know what would alleviate some of the tension? A friendly competition to see who can bed the highest number of sexy locals along the way. Surely this won’t complicate anything or stir up any lingering feelings between Theo and Kit. Everything is delicious, and everything is fine.

Friends, readers: I had the time of my life writing this book. I spent a year immersing myself in it, traveling, indulging, reading poetry, looking at art, taking duolingo courses, painting watercolors, baking from scratch, zooming around google maps, going to wine classes, everything I could do to feel what Theo and Kit feel. I mean, it’s a dirty job, but somebody has got to do it.

Every book I write, I try to push myself to do better than the one before, and every book until now, I’ve felt like I spent most of the process reaching for what a good book might be. This manuscript was the first time I felt like I was standing over what I was trying to write and putting pieces into place deliberately. I read more widely than I ever have, experimented with structure and form, drafted by hand, pushed myself to act like I deserve the opportunity to create it. I wanted to stop worrying about being an imposter and write as if I saw myself as an artist. The result is: my favorite book to date.

The main two characters you’ll find in this book are a hot nonbinary jock who loves ‘80s action movies (Theo) and an ethereal half-French romantic elf-prince who recites poetry (Kit). A few more things you’ll find:

A sexy Italian tour guide named Fabrizio

At least one sheep

Many, many erotic descriptions of food and drink

Unprecedented amounts of smut (for my body of work, at least

Ruminations on gender while staring at The Birth of Venus

Influences including such great artists as: Rilke, Forster, Tolkien, Botticelli, Bourdain, Swayze, Caravaggio, Cezanne, Henry James, and Keanu Reeves in Point Break

God, I love this book. I hope you will too. I cannot wait for you to read it. If it sounds like your jam (or your jambon), you can preorder it right now .

An Exclusive Interview with Casey McQuiston

casey mcquiston tour

Author Casey McQuiston makes her literary debut this summer with the charming romance everyone is talking about: Red, White & Royal Blue . Embarking on her first book tour, sharing her writing with the world and keeping up a strong Instagram game , Casey is a busy woman with an incredible future ahead of her. Learn more about Casey McQuiston now in this exclusive She Reads interview.

Don’t forget to order your copy of Red, White & Royal Blue !

What was the inspiration behind  Red, White & Royal Blue ?

I mention in my acknowledgments that I came up with the idea for the book while obsessively following the presidential election in early 2016, but that’s only part of it. That spring, I was also watching a new season of Veep and alternating between reading a dense Hillary Clinton biography by Carl Bernstein and The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. I was so intrigued by these incredibly high profile worlds that are still very exclusive – everyone sees everything you do, but there’s a whole other story happening behind closed doors. So I knew I wanted to do a first family story or a royal family story. And then I realized – if I had a member of the first family fall in love with a member of the royal family, I didn’t have to pick just one!

What message do you hope readers take away from your new release?

Wow, there are so many. I hope people come away with this book feeling energized and excited about doing work to make our world better. I hope they remember the line from a certain speech I won’t spoil: love is indomitable. And on a meta level, I hope people can look at this book and see that queer romcoms for adults can work and find an audience.

If you had to choose three to five of your favorite books of all time, what would they be and why?

Oh, this is so hard! Let’s see
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, because I think reading it as a teen hardwired my brain to write banter. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo , because it explores that kind of high profile secret world that I love and includes such a powerful, heartwrenching queer love story. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , because it’s my favorite installment of the series that totally shaped my adolescence. Can I say a screenplay? Because I would pick one of Nora Ephron’s.

What’s the one thing you always take with you on book tour?

This is going to be my first ever book tour, so I’m still picking it up as I go! But I’m not sure I’d survive this tour without packing cubes to keep all my stuff neat and compact. I’m doing multiple weeks of travel for the first two legs so it makes a huge difference in what I can fit in my suitcase! Also, Haribo bears. Never leave home without them.

Which 2019 book release are you most looking forward to?

There are so, so very many incredible books coming out this year, but one that’s very close to my heart is Mason Deaver’s I Wish You All The Best . It’s a YA about a non-binary teen who finds love and a new home after their parents kick them out, and it’s just so sweet and kind. It means so much to me on a personal level – and not just because we share a release date!

The Pairing

Casey McQuiston

The Pairing

#1 New York Times bestselling author of Red, White & Royal Blue, Casey McQuiston's delicious romantic comedy The Pairing . Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends, crushes, lovers and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on a flight to their dream European food and wine tour, they exited each other's lives. Time apart has done them good. Theo is a bartender and aspiring sommelier with a long roster of lovers. Kit graduated as the reigning sex god of his pastry school and now bakes at one of the finest restaurants in Paris. All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened. Four years later, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately. It's not until Theo and Kit board the tour bus that they discover they've both had the exact same idea, and now they're trapped with each other for three weeks of the most romantic sights and sensuous flavours of France, Spain, and Italy. But, it'll be fine as long as they agree they're absolutely over each other. So, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, Kit is game. In fact, why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition? But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can't have.

LIMITED FIRST PRINT RUN--featuring spray-painted edges with a stenciled script design. Only available for a limited time and while supplies last. In #1 New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston's latest romantic comedy, two bisexual exes accidentally book the same European food and wine tour and challenge each other to a hookup competition to prove they're over each other—except they're definitely not. Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends, crushes, in love, and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on the transatlantic flight to their dream European food and wine tour, they exited each other's lives once and for all. Sure, nothing really compares to what they had, and life stretches out long and lonely ahead of them, but—yeah. It's in the past. All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened, good for 48 months after its original date and about to expire. Four years later, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately. It's not until they board the tour bus that they discover they've both accidentally had the exact same idea, and now they're trapped with each other for three weeks of stunning views, luscious flavors, and the most romantic cities of France, Spain, and Italy. It's fine. There's nothing left between them. So much nothing that, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, Kit is totally game. And why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition? But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can't have. If you told 2019 me that I would have the honor to read an early-access digital ARC of one of Casey’s new books, I wouldn’t believe you. With that being said, I am so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to get my hands on this work earlier than the release date. I kid you not, I read this in 24 hours straight. I read it non-stop, catching little snippets while at work, and could NOT for the life of me, put it down. That’s how good it was. It felt like I was catapulted on a summer food and wine tasting excursion right at the tips of my fingers. Not to mention the steamy, yearning and romantic plot within the book, it was astounding and very binge-worthy. I give this book a whopping 5 stars, but wish I could give more than that. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who’s feeling a little indulgent. You’ve done it once again, Casey! You are my icon and hero. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this incredible digital ARC of The Pairing in exchange for an honest review!

As a fan of Casey's writing I knew I'd like this book. But I wasn't prepared for just how much I'd absolutely love it! This book was beautiful! I loved the characters, the world and everything about it. I started reading and just couldn't put it down, I finished the whole book in one sitting. It's just that good! If you love romance books with heart, this book is for you! Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read this book ahead of release in exchange for my honest opinion.

I need to preface by saying that it's very probable CMQ could write a book containing one word per page and I would probably throw myself at their feet accordingly. Be that as it may: this book was everything I wanted it to be and more. It was rich and decadent and brimming with writing that had me moving from blushing ( as if I haven't been reading fanfic since the age of 12), contemplating crying, crying and then absolutely shrieking with laughter. All in a 15 page span. What is it like to be loved the way Casey McQuiston writes about love? Every sentence and emotion- horny, sad & happy- all came together in the best way and I will now be wandering around aimlessly contemplating this book until it comes out and I can force it upon everyone around me and wax poetic (as Kit would want me to tbh). This book sets the bar for romance and, maybe reminded me that second chances can happen. True love really hits, eh?

Theo and Kit are best friends as children, who became lovers, which ended abruptly on a plane on the way to a food and wine tour in Europe. They both decided to use their tour vouchers 4 years later, at the same time. What is the best course of action to take when on a tour with your ex? A competition, of course. I enjoyed this book. It follows Theo and Kit as they realize what was and was not true, and work though their respective hangups. This story is a beautiful exploration of what love is and what it means to be happy. I recommend this to anyone looking for romance, set against gorgeous French, Spanish, and Italian countryside. Pairs well with food and wine. I received a free copy from St Martin's Press through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

I think is book broke me
TheoandKit KitandTheo broke me, The amount of highlighting I did for this was insane. Who let Casey write, “Sometimes I think the only way to keep something forever is to lose it and let it haunt you.” Because I think I need financial compensation for that one. What a beautiful and decadent book. Can’t believe I read my favorite book in January and it doesn’t even come out until August.

Theo and Kit are childhood sweethearts who has a brutal breakup on the flight to their dream European food and wine tour. Years later, they both cash in the unused voucher for their trip at the same time and end up together for 3 weeks.... they realize that they still have feelings for each other... Love Theo and Kit 's chemistry. Their banter is fun. It's a terrific romantic story. Love how they work out their issues. Thanks to the publisher for the arc.

casey mcquiston tour

To say that I loved this book feels like a massive understatement and an inadequate description of just how good it is. The characters are wonderfully flawed, wildly dynamic, and so incredibly lovable. The story itself is a love letter to Europe, elegantly leading you on the journey the characters are on too. The descriptions were so vivid, I felt like I was back in places I’d seen before but also visiting for the first time places I’ve never been. I felt every part of the story so thoroughly. I already want to read it again and I can’t wait to buy it. Utterly thrilled NetGalley let me experience it.

casey mcquiston tour

Casey McQuiston not only did it again, but made me feel (as one of the characters in The Pairing expresses) the full spectrum of human emotions. I was weeping, I was cheering, I was gasping, I was—everything. On the surface, The Pairing just sounds like a great romp—bisexual exes on the same food and wine tour they were meant to take just when they broke up four years prior. But Casey McQuiston layers these characters and their story with dashes of nepotism, self sabotage, found family, childhood friendship, and more in a way that only they can. Theo and Kit join the lexicon of CMQ romantic leads that you just need to root for—and god, they'll make you work for it. They're difficult people who clearly give a shit about each other, and struggle with it because of their complex history; two pieces of one whole suddenly ripped apart. As expected, the supporting cast of characters are just as fun—particularly the rest of the tour group and, of course, Fabrizio, who lived up to the hype I've had for him since Casey first mentioned him when first telling fans about the book. It was a particular joy getting to read this having just been to Europe for the first time as an adult last year, and headed back this summer—like Casey's other books, they're able to capture a true love for the places and things in their writing, both with their language and attention to detail. In RWRB there's the passion for politics and change, in OLS there's the infatuation with NYC, and in IKSW, there's hope for queer kids in the religious South. In The Pairing, you feel Europe; you taste the food; you feel the love on those streets and for those things. I want to find all the places Theo and Kit were, want to eat and drink what they did. It was magic. I was nervous as someone not typically inclined to first-person POV how I'd feel about this—because Casey is a writer who puts on an incredible cast of characters, I was worried I'd find it limiting. But the way CMQ weaves characters in and out of Theo's POV, who we start the book with, is delightful, just tinged with the character's biases. We're introduced to Theo and Kit's love story from this perspective, too—along with the game they play, trying to sleep with as many locals on their tour as possible. But the second the POV switches to first person from Kit, the story gets turned on its head—and for the better. Leave it to Casey to get me this thrilled with a First Person POV. The Pairing was another piece of CMQ magic; sluts and fairytale romances pair together just as well as pastry and a great cocktail. Who knew?

casey mcquiston tour

Emotional and raw, the Pairing is a perfect romance from Casey McQuiston. I adored the descriptions of Europe and the food in the tour, but the real stunner of the story is the relationship between Theo and Kit. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this electronic advanced reader copy!

I have been chomping at the bit to get my hands on CMQ4 and boy did it live up to, and exceed, my expectations. This book has all my favourite things: bisexual sluts, travel, poetic odes to one true love, along with that perfect mix of tough and tender witty banter that we love and Casey does so well. They have this unfailing ability to craft characters that make me.feel seen, either through their thoughts, words or actions. Theo makes me feel SEEN, and Kit, Kit makes me hope that one day someone will see me like that. Oooff I absolutely zoomed through this because I have no self restraint, but I cannot wait to hold it in my hands and savour its decadence slowly, like it deserves. 10/5 stars, no notes.

Casey McQuiston has done it again! Their magical ability to combine hilarity and poignancy has produced another swoon worthy romance novel filled with all the warmth and richness of the food and wine pairings that accompany each chapter. The miscommunications and mental anguishes of both Theo and Kit keep the reader engaged, but even when you want to shake them for being stupid, you can relate so much to those feelings of inferiority and terror of holding their partner back. Even though you know it's a happily ever after, you don't expect a single one of the twists and turns that get you there. Easily their best book to date!

casey mcquiston tour

Casey McQuiston has done it again. The Pairing was one of the most beautifully gut-wrenching and yet somehow so deeply intimate books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. A story starting with lost love, soon reunited and navigating life as....friends? Maybe something more? Kit & Theo's story was so beautiful and REAL. I could see myself in both of them, in their worries, their flaws, their willingness to love and experience the world. I cannot recommend this enough, the world needs more beautiful queer love-filled stories that explore the complexities of self-doubt and living up to family standards. I am also feeling a deep need to research European food tours to perhaps experience a fraction of the beauty Casey wrote about in this book. I will be gushing about this for months to anyone willing to listen, as it has surely warmed me from the inside.

(Thank you St Martin's Press for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own ) Well where do i start. Can I give six stars? Asking for a friend here. The prose is so delicious, both literally (my mouth was watering at some of these descriptions) and emotionally. (I just kept highlighting more and more passages). If you liked RWRB, you will like this. If you like reading about stubbornness, gender thoughts, pastries, competent people, self-destructive actions, the people met and the connections made during travel, art and art history, wine, European architecture, or all of the above, you will like this. If you like having to pause reading a page because your chest feels physically tight and you might cry (in a good way) if you don't, you will like this. Tldr: you will like this, and I cannot wait to rotate this book in my mind 24/7 for the foreseeable future.

I made the mistake of starting this during my lunch break, and it's amazing that I got anything else done today. Casey McQuiston's writing is so easy to get lost in, and this book was no exception. The way the book is broken up into periods of time, cities, and POVs without ever feeling disjointed or rushed is masterful. I might be biased as someone that has lived through the bestfriends-to-lovers trope irl, but the relationship felt so realistic to being head over heels for your best friend that watching them miss and re-learn each other made my heart ache too; I had to take a break to hug my partner. Now I need to go book a European food tour. This book is my first 5 star read of 2024, and is definitely in the running to be my favorite read of the year already too.

casey mcquiston tour

This was so much fun. I loved the dynamic, the setting and banter so much. This one by CMQ did not disappoint me at all. It was the perfect read and I loved this so much. Highly recommend all books by CMQ. You will not be disappointed.

Pairs well with: fresh grapes, pasta salad, cheese, olive oil, and freshly baked bread. Sometimes I wonder what an alternative me in an alternate timeline would do, and I think this would be it. Taking in art in all its forms and glory. Indulging in the decadence, the abundance of something someone, somewhere worked hard to create. There’s something about Casey McQuiston’s characters and stories that make me think about the universe in a way I never thought of, and yet in a way that sings to me, like it’s made for me, in a strange ethereal way. I’ll always think of Kit and Theo, and I’ll always come back to them. Extremely grateful to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC.

Beautifully full of lust for food, drink, and people. As in all of McQuiston’s work I was delighted, compelled, and just a bit heartbroken by each character. Couldn’t put this book down for a moment

casey mcquiston tour

Pastry, Wine, European Travel, and Your Ex...what could go wrong? I loved this book from the first page to the last. Kit and Theo each have a distinct voice and character that you can't help falling for. Both of these characters are charismatic and sexy and deeply human. Careful- reading this might make you want to spontaneously take off to Europe for your own sensual food and wine vacation.

casey mcquiston tour

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. Maybe it’s the high of finishing a great book but I think this is my new favorite Casey McQuiston book. Everything in The Pairing is heightened from their previous works, and I say this as someone who worships Red, White and Royal Blue. The writing is Casey at the top of their game. Everything is so rich and indulgent. I felt like I was on this tour across Europe with them. Everything is so cinematic and vivid. Their descriptions of art and food and love and gender and sex were so incredible they made me weep. There’s a section about Venus and David that’s so beautiful I could die. And it’s maybe the sexiest book I’ve ever read. Casey wasn’t kidding when they said it was their horniest, smuttiest book yet. Bravo. I also love the dual-POV here. It’s the perfect approach to Theo and Kit’s story. Theo’s chapters made me fall in love with Kit and Kit’s chapters made me fall in love with Theo. I could write a million different reviews highlighting different things I loved about this book. I haven’t even touched upon how funny it is too! I can’t wait to read it again when it’s released in August.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 10: Phil Mickelson of the United States and his caddie, Jon Yarbrough, ... [+] walks the 13th fairway during a practice round prior to the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 10, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Warren Little/Getty Images)

There’s not a lot of highly competitive golf left in Phil Mickelson’s tank. He led the line of players defecting from the PGA Tour to join the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf two years ago, and has finished in the top 10 only twice in the 26 events he’s played.

He could be playing on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, as he’s 53. It’s easy to see why oddsmakers list Mickelson somewhere between 125-to-1 and 300-to-1 to win the Masters, placing him in the range of golfers like Jake Knapp, Kevin Na, Eric Cole and Adam Svensson.

But here’s a question to ask the guy sitting on the next bar stool: Where did Mickelson finish in last year’s Masters?

The answer, believe it or not, is second.

Mickelson was never a threat to Jon Rahm but put together a final-round 65 to tie 54-hole leader Brooks Koepka for second. It marked his 16th top-10 at Augusta National, where he built his legend by winning three times (2004, ’06 and ’10).

One of the fascinating features of the Masters is that it is one of the few events where all of the world’s best golfers are welcome, whether they stayed with the PGA Tour or took the guaranteed money being offered by LIV Golf.

NYT ‘Strands’ Hints, Spangram And Answers For Friday, April 12th

Juiced o j simpson once had a hidden camera prank show and made stabbing jokes on it, aaron lewis hits a new career low with his new album.

There are 13 LIV members in the 89-man field for the Masters, including the defending champ. Rahm was still on the PGA Tour side of the split when he out-dueled Koepka to win last April but shook hands with Greg Norman and LIV’s deal-makers in December, with reports of his guarantee ranging from $300 million to $550 million.

Eighteen LIV golfers qualified for the 2023 Masters but it is becoming harder for them to qualify with LIV events not registering in the Official World Golf Rankings. You can see why that is a point of great contention among LIV golfers.

The list of those playing this years Masters: Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Koepka, Adrian Meronk, Mickelson, Joaquin Niemann, Rahm, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Cameron Smith and Bubba Watson.

Garcia, Johnson, Mickelson, Rahm, Reed, Schwartzel and Watson qualified as past champions. DeChambeau, Hatton and Koepka qualified as past champions of other majors of the Players Championship. Hatton and Meronk were ranked within the top 50 in the OWGR, and Niemann was given a special exemption after winning once on the DP World Tour and twice in LIV events since November.

The list of LIV members who did not qualify for the Masters is headed by Talor Gooch, Louis Oosthuizen, Abraham Ancer, Mito Pereira, Harold Varner III, Paul Casey and Dean Burmester, who beat Garcia in a playoff to win last week’s LIV event in Miami.

The other three majors have also elected to include LIV members who qualify. There are currently eight LIV members eligible for the PGA Championship, nine eligible for the US Open and 13 eligible for the Open Championship.

It is a point of pride for LIV that 12 of their members made the Masters cut in 2023, with Koepka and Reed (tied for fourth) joining Mickelson in the top-10. Including Rahm, four of the top six finishers from last year enter this year’s event representing LIV. The only exceptions are Jordan Spieth and Russell Henley, who shared fourth with Reed.

PGA Tour members Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy head to Thursday’s first round with the lowest odds to win the Masters. But LIV members Rahm, Koepka, Niemann and DeChambeau are generally among the 10 players with the lowest odds.

McIlroy has become outspoken about the need for golf’s ruling bodies to bridge the chasm that was created when the the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, known as the Public Investment Fund, changed the financial landscape of the sport in 2022. The PGA Tour responded a year ago, adjusting its structure and elevating its prize money in an attempt to stop the exodus from its ranks.

It doesn’t appear a resolution is in sight. That makes events like the Masters even more interesting than they’ve always been.
