El Clásico and Soccer Champions Tour to air on ESPN networks

kyle fansler

by Kyle Fansler July 10, 2023

champions tour espn

Sources tell World Soccer Talk that the Soccer Champions Tour has found a home on ESPN networks this summer.

The 2023 tournament features a slew of friendlies involving many of the top teams in Europe. For example, Manchester United, Arsenal, AC Milan and Juventus. Also, Barcelona and Real Madrid play out their third Clásico in the United States. The Spanish giants also play games against those aforementioned European powers.

Channel details include many of the games appearing on ESPN+ as well as ESPN Deportes. Barcelona and Real Madrid fans are well-accustomed to ESPN’s channels, as that is the home of LaLiga. Of course, last summer, the Clásico friendly in Las Vegas aired on FS2 .

Even though the games are in the United States, ESPN acquiring the rights is welcome news for those interested in watching from home. Some of the world’s greatest players will play in these friendlies later this month. That likely includes preseason debuts for new signings such as Christian Pulisic at AC Milan , Mason Mount at Manchester United, Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid and/or Declan Rice at Arsenal.

Soccer Champions Tour on ESPN provides plenty of options

In total, there are eight games in the Soccer Champions Tour on ESPN. As of press time, among the live games from the Soccer Champions Tour on TV and streaming, they include:

  • Barcelona vs Juventus (Saturday, July 22 – 10:30 p.m. ET), ESPN+
  • Real Madrid vs Milan (Sunday, July 23 – 10 p.m. ET), ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes
  • Real Madrid vs Man United (Wednesday, July 26 – 8:30 p.m. ET), ESPN+
  • Arsenal vs Barcelona (Wednesday, July 26 – 10:30 p.m. ET), ESPN+
  • Barcelona vs Real Madrid (Saturday, July 29 – 5 p.m. ET), ESPN+
  • Milan vs Barcelona (Tuesday, Aug. 1 – 11 p.m. ET), ESPN and ESPN Deportes

Each of these teams has a strong following in the United States, and they will pull in audiences for ESPN’s coverage of the friendlies. However, the Soccer Champions Tour on ESPN does create some challenges for some of the other games happening at the same time in the United States.

Soccer Champions Tour faces plenty of competition

For example, the Leagues Cup faces stiff competition from many of these games involving European giants. Lionel Messi’s impending debut with Inter Miami against Cruz Azul should not be affected. However, on July 29’s Clásico in Arlington, TX, there are Leagues Cup matches in both Atlanta and Austin. Those games may struggle to pull in the audiences. Worse off for the Leagues Cup, those games are airing only on MLS Season Pass, while the Clásico airs on ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes.

Then, there are other club friendlies going on during the same dates. The Premier League Summer Series has games on the same dates as Arsenal-Barcelona and Manchester United-Real Madrid. Premier League Summer Series games are mostly exclusive to streaming on Peacock . However, select games are on USA Network or NBC.

U.S. Soccer star uses CONCACAF Champions Cup as revenge tour

B randon Vazquez is one of U.S. Soccer's brightest young talents, but the forward's professional journey has been filled with frustration.

After an eye-catching youth career split between Chula Vista and Tijuana, Vazquez got his big break when coach Tata Martino signed him to Atlanta United of Major League Soccer for the club's debut season. From there, though, Vazquez found himself on the outside — shunned by Martino and struggling for playing time during the most important phase of his career.

"I didn't really have a great relationship with him," Vazquez told ESPN about Martino last summer.

Vazquez left MLS for Monterrey in Mexico over the winter, and he set his sights on North America's biggest prize: the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Fate threw some familiar foes in his path. First came FC Cincinnati, the team he left in the winter; Vazquez scored in both legs to eliminate his old club from the Round of 16.

From there, the true test awaited: Tata Martino, now in charge of Major League Soccer's star-studded Inter Miami.

For Monterrey, beating Inter Miami would mean everything. It would underline Liga MX's dominance over MLS and prove that even Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, the greatest player in the world, couldn't compete with it.

For Vazquez, beating Inter Miami meant revenge — over the coach and league that wasted his talent.

Monterrey won the first leg 2-1 in the United States thanks to goals from Maximiliano Meza and Jorge Rodriguez. But Messi missed that opening match, and with the Argentine set to return for the second leg in Mexico, the tie remained balanced on a knife's edge.

It was Vazquez, of course, who settled it. When Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender made an error inside his penalty box, Vazquez was their to seize the opportunity and fire the ball into the back of the net. His goal set the aggregate score at 3-1 and pushed the game beyond Miami's reach.

When Vazquez scored against Cincinnati in the Round of 16, he refused to celebrate out of respect for his former club. He had no such compulsions against Miami. Vazquez leapt in the air in front of the home fans and pumped his fists, clearly thrilled to have delivered a knockout blow to Martino's men.

Vazquez was reflective in the press box once the game ended with a Monterrey win. "It is another step on the path that we deserve to be on," he told the press in Spanish.

He was talking about Monterrey, of course. But after years of stops, starts and frustrations getting his MLS career off the ground under Martino's care, you'd be forgiven for thinking he was talking about himself, too.

Vazquez and Monterrey will continue their Champions Cup journey against the Columbus Crew on April 23.

The First Look: Masters Tournament

The First Look

It's time for the first major championship of the PGA TOUR season.

Augusta National is primed and ready for the 2024 Masters Tournament after a fabulous finish to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the wonderful Drive, Chip & Putt National Final.

Scottie Scheffler recently added a second PLAYERS Championship to his resume. Can the defending champ do the same at the Masters? He is the unquestioned No. 1 player in the world right now, but he will have plenty of challengers.

Here's everything you need to know as the TOUR returns to Augusta.

NOTABLE INVITES AND AMATEURS: Fred Ridley, the chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, extended three special invitations for 2024 to Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen , Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann . Olesen, who holds dual DP World Tour and PGA TOUR membership, has won three years in a row on the DP World Tour and finished T6 in his Masters debut in 2013. Hisatsune was last year’s Rookie of the Year on the DP World Tour and has made seven of 10 cuts on the PGA TOUR this season. This will be his Masters debut. Niemann will be playing his fifth Masters… World No. 1 amateur Christo Lamprecht of South Africa headlines the amateur contingent. Lamprecht, who is in the field as the reigning British Amateur champion, made headlines by holding the first-round lead at The Open. Lamprecht also is No. 2 in PGA TOUR University. The other amateurs in the Masters are Santiago de la Fuente of Mexico (the Latin America Amateur Championship winner), Neal Shipley of the United States (U.S. Amateur finalist), Australia’s Jasper Stubbs (Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship winner) and Stewart Hagestad (U.S. Mid-Amateur champion). All of the amateurs except Hagestad are making their Masters debut. Hagestad is playing for a third time; he was the low amateur in 2017.

SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: The Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 for the RBC Heritage will be finalized this week. Though the Masters does not count towards the Aon Swing 5, it could change if Peter Malnati or Thomas Detry are bumped from the Aon Next 10 this week. Malnati and Detry would move into the Aon Swing 5 if they fall out of the Aon Next 10. Click here for the full standings.

COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: Ludvig Åberg and Chris Kirk swapped spots in the TOUR TOP 10 after the Valero Texas Open, with Aberg now at No. 8 and Kirk at No. 9. The rest of the TOUR TOP 10 remained the same… Akshay Bhatia jumped from No. 55 to No. 12 in the standings after his victory and is within shouting distance of the TOUR TOP 10 for the first time… Denny McCarthy , who Bhatia topped in a playoff in San Antonio, moved from No. 85 to No. 19.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 750 FedExCup points.

COURSE: Augusta National Golf Club, par 72, 7,555 yards. After multiple changes in 2022 and 2023, there was just one update for 2024, as the par-5 second was lengthened by 10 yards. Over the past three Masters, the second hole played as the easiest each year.

Rory McIlroy, in his pre-tournament press conference at the Valero Texas Open, also mentioned there were changes to the greens on Nos. 2, 4 and 6.

“There's like a back middle hole location on two, there's a slightly bigger area in there where they can sort of move that around a little bit," he said. "On four they've sort of made the back right section a little bit bigger for an extra pin position there. And then six is different, like the top right plateau is definitely bigger and then they've flattened out a section in the back left to maybe have an extra hole location there, too."

72-HOLE RECORD: 268, Dustin Johnson (2020)

18-HOLE RECORD: 63, Nick Price (third round, 1986) and Greg Norman (first round, 1996)

LAST TIME: Jon Rahm won the green jacket in a come-from-behind triumph on a marathon final day at Augusta National. Rahm was four shots back of the leader, Brooks Koepka, to start Sunday and had to play 30 holes due to weather knocking out much of Saturday’s third round. Rahm shot a final-round 69 to win by four over Koepka and Phil Mickelson. Jordan Spieth and Russell Henley finished tied for fourth, along with Patrick Reed.
