For most travelers in their 20's, money is a major obstacle for adventure. It's rare for a young person to have substantial amounts of money saved, especially during or right after studying at university. This means luxurious getaways with five-star hotels and first-class flights are often out of the question. But even on a tight budget, you can have a lot of fun in many places around the world.

A popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia, Thailand is just as beautiful as the hype suggests. Sparkling Buddhist temples, limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, lush jungles, bustling cities...Thailand is full of diverse landscapes and welcoming locals. It has the appearance and feel of an expensive vacation, but you can easily enjoy the same experience on a budget .

You can cross so many items off your bucket list in Thailand without spending a ton of money . A full day cooking class in Chiang Mai can cost under $30, a boat tour around the islands of Koh Phi Phi can stay under $20, and a ticket to the incredible temples of the Grand Palace in Bangkok costs only $15. All these are pretty cheap for what they're worth . 

Even the day-to-day expenses in Thailand are affordable . For example, you can get a full plate of fresh Pad Thai or a giant fruit smoothie at a street market for $1.

2. Bulgaria

This gem of South America is most famous for its wonder of the ancient world, Machu Picchu. Peru is a rather large country with lots to offer, including the Andes Mountains, Amazon Rainforest, and countless beaches, forests, deserts, and small local villages. 

Touristy adventures like hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu can be pricey through nice tour companies, but you can also find treks through local hostel tour companies like Loki Hostel or Milhouse Hostel for much cheaper. Visit this vibrant Caribbean island to feel like you've stepped back into the 1950's. With a unique history and a colorful culture full of aromatic Latin food, picturesque architecture and of course, Cuban cigars, there is no shortage of things to do in Cuba . 

Luckily, all these things can be enjoyed on a budget . Stay in an Airbnb or in a Casa Particular with a local family for about $20-$30 a night. This is a bit pricier than a hostel dorm room, but the authentic experience with locals is worth the extra cash. A comforting mix of eastern European culture and Mediterranean warmth, Croatia is one of my favorite places to travel in your 20s. Some of its more popular cities can be a bit touristy, but they are absolutely still worth the trip. 

F or example, Dubrovnik is full of rustic old churches and menacing stone walls, many of which were used for filming Game of Thrones. This is one of the most expensive cities in Croatia, but can still be done on a budget . 

If you have a student ID card, you can get a huge discount on climbing the city walls. You can also spend a day hiking and swimming on the nearby Lokrum Island, which is only a 5 Euro ferry-ride from the city pier.

Other beautiful cities in Croatia can easily be done on a budget . Split is a lazy beachside town with a whitewashed Old Town Center and a massive park perfect for running and watching the sunset. The good news is both of these activities are completely free and allow you to explore the beauty and serenity of Split.

6. Nicaragua

This small Central American nation has all the same assets as its neighbor, Costa Rica , but it's much cheaper and much less touristy . If you're wondering what are the best places to travel in your 20s in Central America , you should definitely consider Nicaragua.

Here you can find friendly, laid-back locals eager to interact with you, small historical cities with stunning architecture, and cheap produce markets with fresh tropical fruits for minuscule prices. Beginner surfers can learn how to ride the waves at beaches like Playa Maderas, while experienced surfers can hunt down the big waves in places like Popoya.

7. South Africa

South Africa is the perfect country for experiencing lots of life-changing moments in one trip . Visit Kruger National Park for a thrilling safari and spot lions, elephants, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and more in their natural habitat. 

A luxury guided safari is pricey, but you can purchase a self-drive safari for only $100 a night; this can drop down to as low as $60 a night if you camp. Witness more natural beauty at the tabletop mountains of Drakensberg Park, which lies on the border of South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Explore more jaw-dropping peaks at Table Mountain in Cape Town, one of the most popular cities in South Africa. You can hike Table Mountain for free, and there are numerous trails with varying levels of difficulty.  

Another free attraction in Cape Town is Green Point Park, the same spot where the FIFA World Cup was held in 2010. Scope out the architecture in Greenmarket Square or the neighborhood of Bo-Kaap, or learn to surf at Muizenberg.

9. Cambodia

Many travelers visit Cambodia to explore the ancient temples of Siem Reap, and with good reason. You can spend up to seven days roaming through the massive stone structures that date back to the 12th Century, watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat and witnessing the giant faces at the Bayon. 

Stay in a hostel in Siem Reap while you plan your stay; some hostels are as cheap as $4 a night and the staff will help you plan your visit to the temples. 

The prices for the temples passes are currently $37 for one day, $62 for three days, and $72 for seven days, which is very reasonable considering tourism is one of Cambodia's main sources of income . Without these famous temples, the country would probably fall deeper into poverty.

So it's absolutely worth traveling to Cambodia and giving a bit of money towards the local economy , as long as you respect their culture. Always wear appropriate clothing in the temples and be kind to the locals.

10. Romania

Some people believe the land known as Transylvania is a myth, but it's actually a large region in the eastern European country of Romania. It's incredibly cheap to visit and easy to travel through Romania , and you'll be able to see some adorable little villages and impressive castles along the way. 

Some of the most popular towns aIong the Transylvanian route are Brasov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, and Sighisoara. Common factors among all these towns are brightly painted houses, visually pleasing public squares, and cheap food. While the debate over whether Turkey is European or Middle-Eastern has not been settled, the affordability of this country remains constant. Turkey  is undoubtedly one of the best places to travel in your 20s (or at any age) on a budget.

One of the highlights of this country is being able to enjoy authentic Turkish cuisine , like stuffed vine leaves, warm eggplant dishes with yogurt sauce, sugary baklava and Turkish delight, savory Gozleme, and tasty Doner kebabs.

12. Bolivia

To find authentic South American culture and unbelievable natural scenery , visit the mysterious country of Bolivia. Not only is everything extremely cheap here, such as food, accommodation and Spanish schools, but the intense local traditions and practically untouched ancient culture makes this country an unforgettable experience . 

Visit La Paz, the highest city in the world, to find some interesting witchcraft stores and beautiful handmade accessories from the local farmers. You can also trek to small villages to visit the Quechuan tribes , where people still speak their ancient languages and don't even know Spanish.

Located smack in the middle of Europe, the Czech Republic is a much more affordable destination than its neighbors , Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Your 20s are for rich dishes, late nights, and lazy, hazy mornings after. Sure, you could do all of this in the city or town you’ve chosen to spend your early adulthood. Or , you could do it on the beach in Tel Aviv. 

There’s nothing like traveling in your 20s. You’ve got a good amount of freedom and flexibility in your schedule, and (hopefully) the financial support of your first “real world” job. And as someone who’s stepping out into the world for the first time, you probably need a good point in the right direction.

Go Backpacking in Southeast Asia

From Thailand to the Philippines , Southeast Asia has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. And one of the best ways to see these sights is on your own two feet. Southeast Asia is incredibly welcoming, particularly for young backpackers. 

Activities here are plentiful, from breathtaking volcano hikes in Bali to world-class scuba diving in Malaysia . Explore small villages like Pai, Thailand, or crazy, sprawling cities such as Bangkok — and almost everything in between. Laissez les bons temps rouler in the city known as the birthplace of the first cocktail (the Sazerac, if you don’t know — you can order one at the Carousel Bar  in Hotel Monteleone). You'll certainly have your fill of hurricanes, French 75s, Ramos Gin Fizzes, vieux carrés, Pimm's Cups, brandy milk punches, and daiquiris (did we mention the city is known for its mixed drinks?).

Bar hop on Bourbon Street before a late-night, live jazz session at Preservation Hall , then recover with coffee and beignets at Café Du Monde the next day. Even beyond parades and Mardi Gras, New Orleans ’ laidback energy and out-of-this-world food mean it’s a good time all year long .

Explore Tokyo's Many Neighborhoods

Tokyo could be called the city with 1,000 faces because, in addition to being the most populated city in the world, it’s an eclectic blend of past, present, and future with a variety of unique neighborhoods. Spend the day sampling ramen and touring ancient temples before bellying up to a bar for genuine Japanese whisky and Michelin-starred cuisine.

The extensive train system makes Tokyo easy to navigate (as long as you don’t get lost — Google Maps is a necessity for any first-time tourists!), and you’ll want to take advantage when exploring the city’s various neighborhoods, like Shibuya and Shinjuku. Explore Nature in Slovenia

For nature lovers , Slovenia is a country of boundless treasures. From mountain biking to camping on beautiful Lake Bohinj to summiting the daunting Mount Triglav, adventure sport opportunities are around every turn in this quiet corner of the planet. (A word of warning: Beware of the local Slovenians’ definition of the phrase “beginner-level hike.”)

Driving through the countryside is a slightly more serene way to spend a few days exploring the outskirts of Ljubljana, the capital and largest city in Slovenia . The Dragon City, as its sometimes referred to, is a quaint European tourist destination that has perfected the art of riverside patio dining.

Though not exactly a party destination, Slovenia in general is an idyllic setting for a reset or for getting in some quality time with Mother Earth. English is reasonably prevalent in Ljubljana, and locals are quite amiable, but outside of the city prepare to rely on Google Translate to converse with village dwellers.

Jump Around the Greek Islands

Their whitewashed walls and turquoise waters make the Greek Isles feel like stepping into a postcard. There are actually six main archipelagoes to explore, and most people choose to spend their time island hopping within a particular group, made easy with local ferry operators. 

You’ll want to consider the Cyclades, where you’ll get the classic Greek experience (think blue roofs, bougainvillea, and party beaches) in Mykonos and Santorini. There are also the tony hotels on Crete (the largest Greek Island) and the cinematic views of the Sporades made famous in “Mamma Mia!” No matter where you end up, there’s plenty of fun to be found. Tour olive groves and vineyards, indulge in fresh Mediterranean meals, gaze out a deep blue caldera, or just relax on the beach, ouzo cocktail in hand.   

Dip Into the Hot Springs of Iceland

The Blue Lagoon, black-sand beaches, and the northern lights await in this beautifully austere landscape. Iceland is a mythic destination (literally, for the Vikings) where you’re sure to see natural wonders you won’t find in many other pockets of the world.  

Head here sometime between September and March for peak conditions to see the northern lights (read: darkness — there are only about five hours of daylight this time of year). Whereas in the summer months, the sun sets for only three hours and you’ll find better sightseeing weather if you want to tour the glacial lagoons and volcanic islands that make this the "Land of Fire and Ice.” 

Reykjavik makes a great home base and gives you a taste of the local culture (literally, if you slide into a table at one of the city’s many delectable restaurants). Of course, you can also stay directly at the Blue Lagoon (or many of the country’s other hot springs ) or hunker down in a prime northern lights viewing destination .   

Camp at the Grand Canyon

Make the ultimate southwestern pilgrimage to one of America’s most famous national parks for the views and camping of a lifetime. Featuring the gorgeous red rocks that make Arizona famous, the canyon runs for 278 miles with plenty of opportunities for backcountry hiking, stargazing, and whitewater trips down the Colorado River.

Hiking in Grand Canyon National Park takes a good amount of preparation (this is the desert, after all, with plenty of steep cliffs and drop-offs), but the payoff will be well worth it once you’re gazing out at one of the Hermit Road scenic overlooks. Whether you decide to tackle the more accessible South Rim or the less-crowded North Rim, you’ll be rewarded with world-class views and bragging-worthy campsites . If you prefer a less rugged experience, however, Under Canvas does have a Grand Canyon location where you’ll sleep soundly in your safari-inspired glamping tent just 40 minutes from the Grand Canyon Village.

And after visiting it, I know why.

Hotels and daily expenses are rather cheap, and recent building booms have created “hotels” that use empty apartments, giving travelers affordable access to high scale accommodations. The city feels young and full of life because it is very easy to travel to on a budget. The city is very walkable, and public transportation is cheap and reliable.

6. Havana, Cuba

The capital city of Cuba has been a popular tourist destination even long before certain travel restrictions were lifted. The city’s history has created a very authentically distinct feel in terms of culture and appearance. You will see many old cars and buildings with very bright colors, underscoring the liveliness of the city itself.

No matter what your budget looks like, almost every hotel in the city is on the shoreline. This gives you amazing access to the beaches and nightlife of Havana.

7. Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for its universally low cost of living, which extends perfectly to tourists. There are few places I would recommend once there more than Tamarindo. The expansive city along the coast of Panama opposite the coast that holds Panama City . Though some may prefer the latter to San Blas, these islands are often unfairly overshadowed by the capital city. The city often feels like a living postcard, and it is an extremely cheap destination with many quaint ocean side accommodations for around $40 to $63 dollars with anything rarely being $100 or more. Perfect for any young person looking for the cheapest places to travel.

Travel in your 20s: 15 trips to take before you hit 30

Want to travel in your 20s but not sure where to start? Here are 15 different trips to add to your travel bucket list to tick off during this decade.

A heck of a lot happens in your 20s. From college experiences to long-term loves to fresh careers to first homes, your 20s are a decade packed with growth and change.

And while it can be tempting to rush to the traditional goal posts that society sets for us, like marriage, mortgage and babies, it’s also really important to realise that for most of us, this is the time in our lives that we have the best balance of minimal responsibilities and maximum freedom. And that’s something to take advantage of!

Everyone’s situation is different and not everyone will have the same access or ability to travel in their 20s, but travel doesn’t have to mean flying thousands of kilometres away from home and maxing out our credit card. Even a budget holiday or local adventure can do wonders for getting us out of our comfort zones, opening our eyes to other ways of life and building our self-confidence.

Whether you’re heading into your 20s, on your way out of the decade, or you’re already past it and want to give the decade another go just for fun, here are 15 bucket list ways to travel in your 20s.

Disclaimer before anyone comes at me in the comments: You CAN travel after your 20s. As I type this I’m planning my second multi-year round the world adventure which I hope will take me into my early to mid-30s. Travel doesn’t have an age limit, these trips are just suggestions for where young travellers in their 20s could start if they’re just kicking off their travel life.

A girls’ trip (or lads’ trip!)

A week or weekend away with your best girlfriends is an essential trip in your 20s. There’s nothing quite like spending a day exploring an unknown city with your besties, ordering a table full of local dishes to share between your group, then making your way through the cocktail menu while dancing up a storm to 90s bangers. Ah, the dream.

Some of my all-time favourite destinations for a girls’ trip are Mykonos in Greece, New York City, Turkey, and Bali in Indonesia.

A solo trip

I’m obsessed with solo travel ( can’t you tell? ) so I’m a bit biased here, but I firmly believe that everyone needs to travel solo at least once in their lives, and what better time to do it than in your 20s?

Solo travel is good for the soul, and it can have an incredibly positive impact on everything from your mindset to your resilience to your self-assurance. You’re forced to rely on yourself rather than on the people around you, you get to do what you want when you want without anyone getting in the way of your plans, and chances are you’ll meet far more people and make more friends than if you were travelling with people you already knew.

If a solo trip abroad seems way too crazy for you, start by taking an overnight trip away from home and slowly work your way up to something bigger.

My top suggestions for your first solo trip are Australia, the UK, Thailand, and Canada.

A romantic getaway

Slightly off-brand for me since I am not romantic whatsoever, but taking a trip with your partner is a great way to travel in your 20s. Whether you’re looking for a fly ‘n’ flop island holiday or an active adventure that pushes you both to your limits, travelling with someone you love is always one for the memory books.

As an added bonus, travelling as a couple is a brilliant way of testing your relationship’s ability to handle a bit of pressure before you get super serious. Travel brings out a different side in people, there’s logistical difficulties, financial stress and problems to solve, and the way that your potential life partner deals with these could show you some red or green flags. If they’re bad to travel with, they’re proooobably not going to be great to spend the rest of your life with.

(Told you I’m not romantic!)

An extended trip

While a couple of weeks off work for a holiday is always a treat, if you can save up your annual leave for a whole month off or even manage to request a sabbatical from your job, an extended trip is one way to learn a lot about yourself in a very short period of time.

Shorter trips can often be planned before you go, which means you can really relax and enjoy your time away. When you plan something longer than 3-4 weeks, you need to be flexible with your plans, which means going with the flow and dealing with issues on the road. Learning to roll with the punches is such an important skill to have throughout life, and gaining that skill through an epic adventure is probably the best way to get it.

Your choice of destination for an extended trip will depend on your location but many Kiwis and Aussies will opt for Europe, Europeans will opt for New Zealand or Australia, and many young travellers around the world head to Southeast Asia for a month or so of backpacking.

A working holiday

A month or so not long enough for you? It wasn’t for me either, enter the working holiday!

A working holiday (also known as a gap year) is where young people move overseas with the main aim of travelling, but they get access to a special visa which allows them to legally work to fund their travels. There are working holiday visa options in many countries around the world including NZ, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada and the USA, but each country has different eligibility requirements.

There are loads of reasons to do a working holiday, but the main benefits are that you can get amongst the local life of wherever you move to, you can explore the nearby areas without a strict time limit, and it looks brilliant on any CV.

Working holiday tip : Many companies (like my desk job before being a blogger) have offices or even sister companies overseas, which can offer an easy path into taking a working holiday. Consider these future options when you’re tossing up jobs to apply for, and start these conversations with your manager as early in your career as possible.

A luxury getaway

Treat yourself, you deserve it! There are plenty of milestones to celebrate in our 20s, from graduations to engagements to break ups to hitting our career goals, so book a fancy hotel, pop a bottle of champagne from your sea-view balcony and enjoy the good life.

If you can’t afford a full on luxury adventure (let’s be honest, neither can I), consider travelling in a way I like to call “shithouse to penthouse”*. Book the majority of your trip in a cheaper, self-catering accommodation to save on nightly spend and food, then splurge on a night or two at a five star hotel. This is how I stayed at luxury hotels in Hawaii, Portugal, Mykonos and Bali without blowing out my budget.

*Shithouse to penthouse isn’t a fair representation because the cheaper option could be super lovely and not shitty at all, it just needs to be cheap! But I can’t change the name because nothing else is as catchy.

A backpacking trip

And on the totally opposite end of the scale, another bucket list trip in your 20s is a backpacker adventure where you’re on a mission to make your money go as far as possible.

Whether you’re making your way around the lovingly-nicknamed Banana Pancake Trail in Southeast Asia or embarking on a classic Eurotrip, a stint of hostels, overnight bus rides and pub crawls will likely give you life-long friends, unforgettable memories and, without a doubt, some serious financial prowess. Did I once live off Nutella crepes and coconut ice cream for one month in Thailand and Cambodia? Yes.

Even when you reach the point of never wanting to stay in a dorm room or chug a cocktail bucket ever again, the people you meet, the experiences you have and the skills you learn while backpacking will stay with you for a lifetime.

A food crawl

Hands up if you travel for food 🙋🏼‍♀️

If you love doing a deep dive into the culinary scene of wherever you’re visiting, doing a fully food-focused adventure is absolutely one for your bucket list. And while food trips are incredible no matter your age, I do feel that my metabolism and energy levels were much more prepared for a full day of eating in my early 20s!

I’ve never cared about watching what I eat, especially while I’m travelling, because it’s my personal belief that life is too short to say no to pasta when you’re in Italy (and no to cheese in France, and no to kebabs in Turkey, and so on and so forth). But while I used to be able to handle carb-heavy and sugar-filled dishes from dawn til dusk with no issues, as I near my 30th birthday a main-sized portion of carbonara for lunch is likely to put me to sleep before you can say happy hour.

Make the most of a youthful metabolism and food crawl your way around a country or continent before you lose the chance.

An active adventure

If you’re the type of traveller who loves pushing your body to its physical limit (and I don’t mean by eating pasta three times a day), there are some incredible active adventures you could add to your travel to do list before you hit 30.

Some of the classic active trips are trekking to Everest Base Camp or Machu Picchu, hitting the slopes in Whistler or Zermatt, or doing your PADI open water dive course somewhere like the Thai Islands, Great Barrier Reef or Belize.

A road trip

The freedom and spontaneity of a road trip is one of the best feelings in the world, knowing that you can hit the road when you want and drive where you want without having to adhere to transport times or other travellers.

Road tripping can be a bit tougher for those in their early 20s as many car rental companies have additional costs if you’re under 25, but when you hit the sweet spot of being a confident driver in any car and country, not having to pay extra for a young driver surcharge, and still having the ability to roam freely without worrying about responsibilities back home, it’s a great place to be.

Try the van life

Taking a road trip to another level, van life is one travel style that has taken social media by storm. I bet you can picture it: cosying up in your favourite blanket, sipping a coffee as you watch the sunrise from the back window of your van parked up by the beach, set to a dreamy tune on repeat in a 15 second Tik Tok video.

While at times it might seem a bit overdone, the truth is that van life brings a whole new meaning to freedom and it’s something everyone should try at least once!

If you don’t like the idea of having to cook your stir fry on a hot plate that’s about 10cm away from your pillow in the back of a Toyota Hiace (I don’t blame you), I’d recommend upgrading from van life to motorhome life. A friend and I did an epic South Island road trip in a 6.3m 4-berth motorhome and absolutely loved it!

A cultural awakening

Most trips encompass some aspect of learning about a new culture, but planning a trip specifically focused on understanding a different way of life is something super special to experience in your younger years.

Whether you jump on an in-depth group tour to somewhere off the beaten track, participate in a formal exchange where you get to live in a totally different destination, or perhaps you want to learn more about your family’s background and choose to take a heritage trip to your homeland, a cultural adventure is good for the soul and the mind.

A group tour

Many travellers seem to have a bit of an aversion to group tours because they think they’re too touristy and don’t give you enough of an in-depth experience. Of course it depends on the specific tour, but from my group tour experiences I think that’s totally incorrect.

My first group tour was a Contiki down the East Coast of the USA when I was 20, and I still keep in contact with some people in that group ten years later. I’ve since done two more Contiki tours (Europe at 24, Southeast Asia at 27) plus two G Adventures tours in Asia, two Travel Talk tours (Jordan and Turkey), a One Life Philippines tour and a Medsailors Croatia tour all in my late 20s, and I’ve had an incredible time on every single one of them.

If you’re confident and clued up enough to travel independently then that does open many more doors, and it *usually* means your money will go further (not always), but a group tour is perfect for young or new travellers who want security, those short on time, or anyone who is travelling solo and wants to meet like-minded travel buddies.

A festival trip

Festival travel is one for any bucket list, but planning trips around festival dates can be expensiiiiive so it can be hard to make it work once you have kids to run around after or a pricey mortgage to cover each week.

Some of the most popular festivals to add to your bucket list are Oktoberfest in Munich, Holi Festival in India, Burning Man in Nevada and Tomorrowland in Belgium.

An island hopping trip

Last but certainly not least, island hopping is another travel style that requires a bit of flexibility while having enough spending money to travel comfortably. Whether you want to go solo and join a sailing tour, or get a bunch of friends together to book out a boat, spending a week or so at sea is one of the best things you’ll ever do.

You can island hop in many places around the world depending on what type of adventure you’re looking for. There’s an awesome island hopping pass in Fiji that gives you a night at different resorts all through the Yasawa Islands, you could jump on a yacht tour in Croatia or Greece, or cruise around the paradise islands in the Caribbean.

20 places to travel in your 20s

There’s no better way to change your perception of the world — and maybe yourself — than travel. You’ll experience different cultures, meet new friends and make lifelong memories. But traveling in your 20s poses challenges: You might have financial constraints, limited time off from work and concerns about safety. So think of this selection of 20 places less as a checklist and more as a starter kit to world travel. (We’ve left out the obvious classic cities: New York, Paris, London. They are, of course, great places to visit, too.)

1. A national park. They represent so much of what’s great about the United States — beauty, diversity of landscape, freedom. But which one to visit? There’s Acadia in Maine, the Badlands in South Dakota, Joshua Tree in California and 55 others. Pluses for young travelers: Camping (or park cabins) will help save on lodging; they are equally suited to solo travelers and groups; and they are endlessly Instagram-friendly. (Also consider Canada’s national parks, which will offer free admission for all of 2017, the country’s 150th birthday.)

2. Prague. Sure, it’s a bit of an after-college travel cliché, but Prague is still a great spot for backpackers — full of charm, great beer and energy. And the food has gotten a lot better . Visit the beautiful city center, but stay in Vinohrady or Zizkov, which are full of young Praguers and expats.

3. Oaxaca, Mexico. One of the world’s great gastronomic destinations, Oaxaca is also cheap, friendly and safe. Start in Oaxaca City (eat and drink your way through the sprawling markets and mezcalerias), and then take a very short flight or longer minibus ride down to the coast for surfing, swimming and whale-watching.

4. Cuba. It’s a lot easier to get to than it used to be, and still pulses with youthful energy. Start in Havana , but getting around the country will give you a real sense of the culture — perhaps before it starts its post-embargo transformation.

5. Amsterdam. Yes, there are plenty of places to get high. But even without the decriminalized marijuana, Amsterdam would be one of the most charming places on earth : gorgeous (those canals), friendly (with plenty of English speakers), easy to get around (especially on a cheap rental bike), incredibly diverse (because of the Dutch colonial past). The famous/infamous hostels can be fine, though more appealing lodging sits outside the city center, in neighborhoods like De Pijp and Westerpark .

6. Patagonia, Argentina. It feels like the ends of the earth and basically is, but you’ll be glad you took the flight or (very scenic) train ride from Buenos Aires. Stunningly beautiful, it’s home to lakes, skiing, plentiful wildlife and some of the world’s healthiest and most accessible glaciers .

7. New Orleans. This city is the closest you’ll get to an overseas experience in the continental United States. It’s a world unto itself, full of history, character and friendly folks. The food and drink scene is unlike anywhere else: po’boys, gumbo, beignets, Sazeracs. Skip Bourbon Street’s debaucherous chaos in favor of live music at the clubs on Frenchmen Street. Music festival lovers should also consider going in late April for Jazz Fest.

8. Berlin. There are few cities as welcoming for young people as Berlin — affordable, vibrant and friendly , with plenty of English speakers. Fans of contemporary art and beer will be especially pleased. Try Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg as home bases. (The city is also a great hub for getting around Europe, especially with today’s cheap European carriers.)

9. Montreal. Like New Orleans, it’s a taste of Europe without leaving North America. The food is spectacular (go early for the smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz’s), and summertime means easy biking and overflowing markets. If you have a few days to get out of town, the rest of Quebec is gorgeous all year long. (Oh, yeah, and the drinking age is 18.)

10. Vietnam. A trip to Southeast Asia would be tough to squeeze into a week, but if you find yourself with a bit more time, consider Vietnam, a country rich in cuisine , culture and natural beauty — and light on the wallet. Set your sights in particular on the seaside town of Hoi An and Hue, a former national capital. A boat trip through Ha Long Bay is equally memorable.

11. Budapest. It’s come a long way from its Soviet days. Language can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s a welcoming place full of charm and a youthful energy. Take a soak in one of its famous bathhouses and enjoy the city’s laid-back cafe culture.

12. New Zealand. It’s a long (and expensive) flight from the United States, but one with great rewards. Reasonably priced bus tours are easy ways to get around the islands, which offer the stunning, diverse beauty made famous in the “Lord of the Rings” movies.

13. Iceland. Not quite as cheap for Americans as it was after its economy collapsed, Iceland is still a quick flight from the East Coast. Its otherworldly beauty — hot springs , volcanic fields, waterfalls and the famous Blue Lagoon — is best appreciated by getting out of the capital, Reykjavik ; consider booking a tour.

14. Barcelona. Few cities offer such a wealth of dining and night life options as Barcelona. Architecture fans can go on a tour of the wild work of Antoni Gaudí, including the soaring Sagrada Familia. Neighborhoods to explore include medieval Barri Gòtic, seaside Barceloneta and more touristy El Born. It even has great beaches .

15. California coast. A trip up the Pacific Coast Highway requires driving skills and stamina, but you can’t beat the views. Save by camping along the way, in over 20 designated spots .

16. Morocco. Culturally rich, easy to get around and budget-friendly, Morocco is perfect for adventurous young travelers. Start in Casablanca (your flight will probably take you there anyway), but use the extensive train and bus system to get to the Fez (and its dizzying medina), Marrakesh (and the wildly colorful Jardin Majorelle) and the coastal town of Essaouira (and its piers, where you can eat fresh-off-the-boat seafood). If time permits, you can even head by camel into the desert .

17. Costa Rica. A few reasons to visit: Rain forests teeming with wildlife , two coasts peppered with reasonably priced eco-resorts and creative ways to get around (horseback riding and rafting, for example). Flights from the United States tend to be reasonable.

18. A Greek island that’s not Mykonos, Ios or Santorini. The Cyclades — the islands south of Athens — offer unrivaled beauty and relaxation, particularly if you stay away from the party destinations. There’s nothing wrong with them, of course (Santorini is particularly gorgeous), but less-visited islands like Naxos and Folegandros offer fewer tourists and more intact culture. Spend your days swimming, eating amazing grilled seafood and exploring ancient ruins. Evenings are for music, more food and ouzo.

19. Lisbon. Lisbon is an utterly charming city , both youthful and ancient. Neighborhoods to visit include colorful Bairro Alto, Alfama and Intendente . Also consider a side-trip to Sintra , a storybook village nestled in the hills with a castle and not one but two alluring palaces.

20. The Croatian coast. It’s gotten fancier over the years, but bopping down the Adriatic coast in Croatia is still a great option for young travelers. Start in scenic Dubrovnik and hit laid-back and gorgeous spots like Rovinj, Kornati Islands National Park and Makarska. You’ll find great food and wine, dazzling vistas and a welcoming attitude.

There’s no denying it — your 20s are probably the most formative years when it comes to shaping your beliefs, habits, and overall identity. There are so many major life events that happen over the course of the decade. College , new jobs, marriage, buying a house, having kids… it’s like an endless parade of change! That’s why it’s so important to travel in your 20s and take advantage of your relative freedom and lack of responsibilities.

Here are 17 suggestions for epic trips that everyone should take in their 20s!

(Side note: Of course, there is no age limit for traveling. These trips can be taken in your teens, 30s, 40s, and beyond! I just think that they would be particularly beneficial for people in their 20s — read on to find out why!)

Best types of trips to take in your 20s

A solo trip.

Taking a solo trip in your 20s can be a great way to gain independence and self-confidence.

When you travel alone, you’re in charge of your own schedule and plans, which can help you develop decision-making skills and increase confidence in your own abilities. Planning everything yourself in a foreign country can be daunting, but once you do it, you’ll feel a new-found sense of pride in your capabilities!

Solo travel also provides a great opportunity to learn more about yourself. When you’re on your own, you’re forced to confront your own thoughts and emotions, which can help you gain a deeper understanding of who you are and what you want out of life. Spending time alone in your 20s is really important for self-development.

So many places make an excellent choice for first time solo travelers. I’d recommend Iceland , the UK, and Southeast Asia as great places to consider for a solo trip.

A girls’ trip

A girls’ (or guy’s!) trip can be a great way to build and strengthen relationships with your best friends. Going on a trip with your girl friends allows you to spend quality time together, connect on a deeper level, and create memories that will last a lifetime. This can be particularly important in your 20s when you may be navigating new stages of life and building a support system of strong, trustworthy friends.

Additionally, going on a trip with friends is an opportunity to create lasting memories that you’ll look back on fondly for years to come. You’ll have stories to share and inside jokes to laugh about — plus, it’s just plain fun!

Some of the best girls trip destinations include Miami , Nashville, Sedona , Las Vegas, and Mexico .

A road trip

Road trips are an amazing way to explore a new destination with complete freedom. The sense of adventure you get from being able to stop where you want and be spontaneous is unmatched! It’s a great feeling to experience, especially when you’re first entering adulthood.

They are a super accessible way to travel as well. Road tripping can often be cheaper than flying, and you’re able to save on accommodation costs by camping or staying in budget-friendly options along the way. Once you get to your destination, you’ll also save on transportation costs since you already have your own vehicle!

In the United States , most car rental companies require you to be at least 20 years old to rent a car. If you’re under 25, you might have to pay a few extra fees and/or insurance costs. It’s always a good idea to have your own comprehensive travel insurance too, just to be safe!

Try road tripping around the Canadian Rockies , New Zealand’s South Island , or the Midwest’s Great Lakes .

A backpacking trip

For the longest time, I’ve been a huge advocate for backpacks as the superior luggage option for travel. They’re comfortable, they’re convenient, and they fit way more than you’d expect!

Backpacking is almost a rite of passage for people in their early 20s. Taking a gap year after graduating from college or spending a few months abroad between jobs is an incredible adventure and a great way to immerse yourself in the top destinations around the world.

It’s also relatively inexpensive, which is pretty important for travel in your 20s. Book a few cheap flights , stay in hostels, and eat exclusively street food — being so young means that you can sacrifice a bit of comfort to travel longer. Packing carry-on only is also a skill that will save you lots of money (and stress, once your checked bag is inevitably lost by the airlines!).

Classic backpacking destinations include Europe , Southeast Asia, and South America .

A luxury trip

On the other end of the spectrum, your 20s also make the perfect time to treat yourself to a luxury trip.

In my opinion, the best thing about travel is experiencing things that you don’t normally get to in your day-to-day life. And what better way to do that than by relaxing at a day spa or staying in a five-star hotel ?

Because life is so short, any reason could be a good reason to treat yourself to a luxury vacation. Graduating college, going on your honeymoon, or celebrating a promotion at work are all 100% valid. (So is booking a trip just because you want to, hah!)

Luxury trips don’t need to break the bank, either — there are lots of affordable destinations where the US dollar stretches particularly far. This includes places like Bali, Portugal, the Philippines, and parts of Mexico .

Study abroad

There’s no better way for college students to see a new part of the world than by studying abroad. My year abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France is still up there as one of the best years of my life.

You’ll get to learn about rich history, practice overcoming the language barrier, and experience a unique culture different from your own. Study abroad is also a great time to travel independently and take advantage of youth discounts, Interrail passes , and budget airlines.

Although there are study abroad programs available all over the world, the most popular ones (for American students) are in Western Europe. Make sure to pick a country that you’re interested in and passionate about — whether that be the language, the culture, or the food!

A working holiday

If you’ve ever wanted to experience living and working in a different country, a working holiday could be the right choice for you!

When you get a working holiday visa, you’re able to live and work in a country for an extended amount of time. You get to try out what it’s like to live abroad while making a bit of money to support your travels. Most countries only offer working holiday visas for people up until the age of 30, making it the perfect opportunity to travel in your 20s.

For Americans, Canadians, and Europeans, Australia and New Zealand are a classic choice for a working holiday (and vise versa!). Your options will be different depending on which country your passport is from — make sure to check each country’s specific requirements on their official websites.

A city break

Especially if you’re from a small town, taking a trip to a big city can be an eye-opening experience.

Cosmopolitan cities like New York City, London, Singapore, and San Francisco will have a little bit of something for every type of travel style. You can expand your cultural horizons with museums and art galleries, party the night away at world-class nightclubs, and eat so many different types of cuisines.

Your 20s are all about experiencing new things and seizing every opportunity — big cities allow you to do that with ease.

A romantic getaway

Romantic getaways with your significant other can strengthen your bond away from the distractions and stresses of everyday life. If you’ve been together for a while, it’s also a good opportunity to celebrate a milestone or special occasion, like an anniversary or engagement.

In my opinion, traveling with your partner is a must before deciding that they’re the one for you. Traveling can put you in stressful situations, and it’s important to see how they respond. (Are they nice to service staff? Do they lash out at strangers? Or, heaven forbid, do they stand up as soon as the plane lands?!)

Whether you’re whisked away to a secluded cabin in the woods or to the beautiful beaches of the Greek Islands, these getaways definitely create a unique and indulgent atmosphere.

A festival trip

Attending festivals is so fun, and is even more special in a new country! You’ll get to experience new music, art, and culture in a lively setting. Depending on the type of festival, you’ll also be able to learn about different traditions and immerse yourself in the local culture.

Festivals are also some of the best places to meet other fellow travelers, especially if you’re traveling solo. Generally, other festival-goers are open-minded, easygoing, and will be open to meeting new people.

For some epic bucket list festivals, try traveling to Germany for Oktoberfest, Belgium for Tomorrowland, or Nevada for Burning Man.

An adventurous trip

If you’re into thrill-seeking and active pursuits, an adventurous trip is a great one to take in your 20s. Hiking , cycling, water sports, skydiving, bungeeing — scheduling these types of activities during your trip are a sure-fire way to get any adrenaline-junkie excited.

Physically, your 20s are also the best time to take an adventure-focused trip. You’re probably at your peak level of fitness and have more energy than you will later on in life.

Costa Rica, New Zealand , and Peru are great places to have adventurous holiday because they offer a wide range of outdoor activities and day trips.

A family holiday

Just because you’re in your 20s doesn’t mean that you need to stop taking family vacations! They’re an excellent time to bond with your loved ones and create new memories, which is even more important now that you’ve probably moved out on your own.

Family holidays can be a good time to reconnect with your parents and siblings, especially if you don’t live in the same city anymore. It’s nice to schedule a set time every year where you’ll all be together — that way, you (and your family members!) have something to look forward to.

A food-focused trip

I don’t know about you, but personally, the search for delicious food is always a driving force in my travels.

Taking a food-focused trip is a must in your 20s because you’ll get exposed to new cuisines and might discover something that becomes your new favorite food! Whether you’re perusing a local market , trying an unusual new delicacy, or fine dining in a Michelin-starred restaurant, foodie travel is always a good time.

Even if your entire trip isn’t centered on eating, taking a guided food tour is a fun idea. That way, you’ll be able to try a few local dishes that you might not have tried otherwise.

A tropical getaway

Tropical getaways are some of the best trips to travel in your 20s because they provide you with much-needed rest and relaxation.

With all the change that happens in this stage of life (graduations, new jobs, new relationships, etc.), it’s important to take some quality time away from the hustle and bustle to do nothing. Tropical vacations make doing nothing very easy. Lay on the beach, drink a piña colada, and soak in the sun to escape from the real world for a bit.

Some amazing places for a tropical getaway include Fiji, the Dominican Republic , the Maldives, and Tahiti.

A group tour

Group trips are a great place to meet like-minded individuals with similar interests, especially if you’re traveling solo . Tons of companies offer trips geared towards people in their 20s, meaning you’ll most likely make some new friends that share similar values and are in the same stage of life.

If it’s your first trip abroad or to a particular destination, group trips can also be a convenient and safe way to test the waters. You’ll often have your entire trip planned out for you, which can be really helpful if you’re not used to planning transportation and accommodation logistics . You’ll also have a tour guide that’s familiar with the area who can provide assistance and make you feel more comfortable.

Group trips cater to all types of travelers and destinations — G Adventures , Viator , and Intrepid Travel are some popular options.

A stint at van life

Living the van life is one travel experience that many people don’t get to have. It’s one that I think is really fun and insightful, though, which is why I recommend it when traveling in your 20s!

Just like a road trip, van life is both cost-effective and flexible. It eliminates the need to pay for accommodation on the road and saves you money on transportation costs at your destination. You get to practice being more self-reliant, adventurous, and resourceful with your limited amount of space.

Van life is also a slower and more relaxing way to travel. Generally, you’ll spend a few weeks to a few months in your van at a time, getting to explore each place in more depth. Living in a van disconnects you from your daily routine and forces you to adapt to a simpler lifestyle. All in all, van life comes with a lot of benefits, especially for someone in their 20s that wants a unique and independent style of travel.

An “Eat, Pray, Love” trip

Based on the bestselling novel “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, this kind of trip is one where you seek out good food, spiritual enlightenment, and/or romantic adventure in order to better yourself. These trips typically involve exploring different cultures, getting out of your comfort zone, and visiting places of spiritual significance.

It might be a cliche, but your twenties are a time to “find yourself.” Taking a trip that focuses on feeling a sense of adventure, freedom, and spiritual fulfillment is one of the best ways to do so. This is the perfect age to learn from your personal experiences and apply them to the rest of your life.

Whether you’re practicing yoga in India, staying in Buddhist temples in Nepal, or attending an ayahuasca retreat in Peru , any trip where you connect with your true self is invaluable in your 20s.

Fewer responsibilities

Generally, the younger you are, the fewer responsibilities you have.

Taking an impromptu weekend trip or a long-term trek are way easier when you don’t have kids, pets, or a rigid full-time job. Young people definitely have the advantage when it comes to flexibility and spontaneity — having lots of free time allows you to travel without remorse!

Aside from having fewer obligations, people in their 20s often have more financial freedom, too. With new jobs to pad their savings account and fewer financial obligations such as mortgages, car payments, or families to support, many 20-somethings can save for travel more easily. Your 20s are the perfect time to start checking off that travel bucket list!

Young, dumb, & broke

The older you get, the less tolerance you have for discomfort and inconvenience. Travel in your 20s is great because you’re more open to new experiences and can handle uncomfortable situations more easily.

During my year studying abroad in France, my friends and I constantly took weekend trips all over Europe. We took 10€ Ryanair flights (in the middle seat), stayed in grimy hostels, and squeezed in as many activities and nights out as possible.

It was such a great experience that would have been completely different if I wasn’t as open to the discomfort. Although I wouldn’t want to stay in 30-bed mixed hostel dorms nowadays, I’m so grateful that I took the plunge and chased the adventures in my early 20s.

Find yourself

Throughout their 20s, many people are still figuring out who they are and what they want out of life. Traveling during this time allows you to immerse yourself in new cultures, meet new people, gain fresh perspectives, and challenge yourself and your beliefs.

These experiences can be instrumental in helping you discover your passions, values, and goals, which are all important aspects of “finding yourself.”

Travel in your 20s is a great way to become the best version of yourself — the more you get off the beaten track, the more enriched your life will ultimately become.

20 Places to Travel in Your 20s

Recently, the New York Times tweeted a link promising 20 places to travel in your 20s. Like the rest of humanity, I’m a total sucker for lists and couldn’t resist reading.

I’ve written a lot about how much I enjoy trip planning. Sometimes it can be daunting, though. The world is a freaking big place! As silly as this sounds, I’ve at times wondered if I’m traveling to all the places I’m supposed to be traveling to.

That’s ridiculous, though.

Travel is an incredibly intimate and personal thing. Despite what many blogs and other publications promise, there’s no ultimate list of places to travel in your 20s or 30s or 40s or lifetime. It’s important to remember these lists are simply sources of inspiration—not checklists. NYT writer Dan Saltzstein noted this very sentiment before continuing the list . Each traveler has to decide her or his ultimate list of places to travel.

20 places to travel in your 20s

A national park.

Super cool to start this list with a USA destination. Too many Americans think about travel on only a global scale. People get so caught up in the idea of backpacking around Europe or partying in Southeast Asia they forget about all the beautiful places in their very own country—perhaps even their own state. By that same token, travelers visiting the USA overwhelmingly gravitate toward big cities like New York City and Los Angeles. While those cities have a lot to offer, the natural beauty of national parks is equally (if not more) captivating and should not to be missed. My personal fave? Yosemite National Park .

Backpackers are wild for Prague. It’s often lauded as one of the most budget-friendly destinations in Eastern Europe. I visited in April 2016, and while it was affordable, it definitely wasn’t dirt cheap like many blogs had led me to believe. Regardless, it’s a beautiful city and worth visiting. Like so much else, bus travel is affordable, so pair Prague with Budapest (a city you also find on this list) . While visiting Eastern Europe, I spent three days in Budapest, one day in Vienna and three days in Prague. Bus trips to and from Vienna were three to four hours and cost  € 15 –  € 20.

Oaxaca, Mexico

I’ve never been to Oaxaca but grew up admiring Oaxacan folk art . Over the years, my mom has traveled to Oaxaca many times. It’s one of her favorite cities, and we have a collection of Oaxacan folk art displayed throughout our home to prove it. Every year our Christmas tree is adorned with tin decorations made in the likeness of alberijes . I plan to someday visit Oaxaca myself. Between the fantastical folk art and renowned gastronomy, I’m sure the city won’t disappoint.

Even though it’s been almost a year since Americans were permitted to travel to Cuba, I haven’t given the country much thought. The country was under embargo for the majority of my life, and it just hasn’t sunk in yet that I’m allowed to visit. I did eat at a Cuban restaurant in Madrid just the other day, though, and I might have a new obsession.

I’ve been to Amsterdam three times. The first time was during my five-week post-college backpacking trip. On night one, I went on a bar crawl with some Brazilian guys who kept buying me shots of Jaeger. The next two days were spent peering into coffee shops and lounging in Vondelpark (when the weather permitted it, of course). Before my second visit, I vowed to actually see the city, and in less than 24 hours, I made quite the go of it. Despite torrential rain, I visited the Anne Frank House and took a tour of the city’s canals. Amsterdam is famous for its partying, but try to work in some culture between your tokes.

Patagonia, argentina.

South America, I don’t know you, but I love you. When my time in Spain comes to an end later this year, I’m looking forward to traveling in South America. I’ll need to up my camping game before going to Patagonia. For lovers of the great outdoors, Patagonia has it all: mountains, deserts, grasslands and an incredible coastline. Do a Google image search, and prepare to have your breath taken away.

New Orleans

I feel slightly ashamed not to have visited the majority of North American destinations on this list. Hopefully, I’ll get to NOLA sooner rather than later and drink a hurricane in the streets. From friends who have visited, I’ve heard the nightlife is wild with lots of opportunities to hear live music. I’m also very interested in doing some gastronomical research. When I was living in Indianapolis, one of my favorite places to eat was a place in Broadripple called Yats . They served cajun food, and um, YUM. 

I wanted to visit Germany for ages and finally did so in July 2017. While I was planning the trip, I felt a little intimated because I’d read on other travel blogs that Berlin can be a tough city to navigate due to its expansiveness. It’s definitely a big city, but I didn’t have any trouble getting around. The hostels I stayed in were centrally located, and public transportation was easy to use. The highlight of my time in Berlin was an alternative street tour which showcased the city’s street art. It’s a city I definitely see myself visiting again. Similar to Madrid, I liked the vibe of everyone just doing their own thing. 

Canada, oh, Canada. The USA’s kindly neighbor to the north. I’ve visited Canada on two occasions, both before I turned 21. Yes, I was that American who crossed over from Detroit to Windsor in order to take advantage of the lower drinking age. Now that I’m 26, I’d like to take an actual trip to Canada, and Montreal seems like a good place to start. It’s regarded as a very European city, so I should feel right at home.

Unlike a lot of 20something travelers, I don’t have a whole of interest in exploring Southeast Asia (at the moment). NYT’s list does make Vietnam sound intriguing, though. It’s a budget-friendly destination with a lot to offer in terms of food, culture and natural beauty. Sounds right up my alley. Beautiful beaches and Buddhist pagodas? What more could you ask for?

I don’t know what first turned me onto Budapest, but I’d been wanting to visit the Hungarian capital for as long as I could remember. I finally visited in April 2016, and it didn’t disappoint. Budapest had the shit bombed out of it during WWII but has been almost completely restored. I love the city’s vibe, which definitely embodies rising from the ashes. Whether you’re a big partier or not, Budapest’s iconic ruin bars are a must when visiting. Constructed in the ruins of abandoned buildings, stores or lots, ruin bars were once the heart of the underground scene but have become much more mainstream over the last ten years. One memorable night, I watched several Hungarian rappers perform at Instant . I hadn’t the faintest clue what they were saying, but nevertheless, watching them perform was super fun. 

New Zealand

I’ve never been to New Zealand, but I’ve seen Lord of the Rings a dozen times, so I’m basically an expert. No? Okay. I recently saw on Instagram (yay, social media stalking) a couple I went to college with went to New Zealand for their honeymoon. I thought that was way cool because beach resorts and cruises are such a snooze. Exploring the island by hiking (just like Frodo and Sam!) seems like such a fun honeymoon that it’s making me consider getting married. Ha!

Here’s another reference to my rampant social media stalking, but this year people seemed to be losing their minds over Iceland. I can see why, though. How could you ever say no to smearing clay all over your face whilst sitting in a hot lagoon? You might think I’m joking, but that for real sounds like my jam. If (should I just say when?) I visit Iceland, I plan to get out of Reykjavik and find me some hot springs.

Over the last few years, I’ve visited Barcelona three times. The first time was in 2014 as part of my backpacking trip. I stayed on La Rambla, which is the tourist heart of the city. I hated it. I gave the city a second chance in March 2016, and I’m glad I did. I stayed in an Airbnb near La Sagrada Familia. It was a much more residential neighborhood, and as a result, I had an entirely different (more positive) experience. I visited Barcelona for a third time in April 2017 and spent a day at Montserrat. It’s a monastery built into the mountains outside the city. From Barcelona, it’s an easy train ride followed by a cable car journey that’s definitely not for anyone scared of heights!  

California coast

For a while, road trips were severely overrated, but now, they’re severely underrated. How fun does driving along the Pacific Coast Highway sound? It’s 147 of the most breathtaking miles in America . Roadtripping from Carmel to Morro Bay would be expensive, which isn’t ideal for travel in your 20s, but according to NYT, you can save a few bucks by camping along the way. I’m all for that! 

I should probably buy myself a world map because when I moved to Spain, I didn’t realize how close it is to Africa, more specifically Morocco. It’s only a two-hour flight from Madrid to Marrakech. Inspired by the proximity, my boyfriend is studying Arabic. He even has a professional teacher through italki ! When he gets better, he wants to make the trip and try out his language skills. I’d by lying if I didn’t say the famous  medinas  (markets) intrigue me. 

Costa Rica seems awesome, but after reading a post the other day about Nicaragua , I think I’d rather visit there instead. Apparently, Nicaragua is what Costa Rica was like before it got super popular and touristy. Not that there’s anything wrong with being super popular and touristy. I live in Madrid for crying out loud! Sometimes you want to get off the beaten path a little, and I think this might be one of those times.

A greek island that’s not mykonos, ios or santorini.

Personally, when I get to Greece, I’m interested in ferrying to the island of Crete. I want to hike the Samaria Gorge . You know how I love a strenuous hike! Like NYT, I believe everyone should seek out local, cultural experiences, but if you want to party on Mykonos, GO FOR IT! Always be true to yourself as a traveler. 

Although I never got to Lisbon while living in Spain, I visited Porto in February 2016. I can’t say enough good things about the city, and many of my friends who’ve visited both actually prefer Porto. The food is delicious, the people are nice, and the prices are cheap!  The two cities have a pretty fierce rivalry, a north versus south kind of thing. Once I visit Lisbon, I’ll let you know on which side I fall.

The Croatian coast

Backpackers adore the Adriatic coast in Croatia for its natural beauty and cheap prices. Generally, travelers fly into Dubrovnik and make their way along the coast. In summer, Croatia hosts several up-and-coming European music festivals . Whenever I get back to Europe, my travel budget is going to force me to choose between Croatia and Greece. Ugh, it’s going to be a tough decision. I want to hop some islands!

Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

All of the places we visited were amazing, but by and large the success of this tour was due to our incredible guide Voisin Munchan. To keep everyone together with patience and kindness, to enlighten us with history and humor, to always have a positive outlook, all of these abilities and so much more really my made the tour an amazing and emotionally moving experience.

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

Excellent tour with fantastic tour guide (Noddy). It's a tour aimed at younger (under 40) travellers, so the accommodation is mainly hostels and the pace is pretty fast but we still managed to spend a reasonable amount of time in each place. There was a good balance of history/culture and activities, and there is a lot of flexibility with the optional activities and free time to spend more or less time at the beach, museums, etc. Highly recommended as an introduction to the Balkans!

Essential Turkey

Enjoyable tour that took you around some must-see parts of Turkey. Highlight of the trip was the 2 night stay on the boat- the couple who owned the boat were so lovely and they cooked phenomenal meals for us during our stay. Accommodation was decent and we were lucky to have had a private bus that took us around during the first part of the tour. Highly recommend!

Explore a national park, see a space shuttle launch or even leave the country with these safe, family-friendly vacation destinations.

It’s true that those bucket-list destinations might have to move to a back burner for many travelers due to financial considerations. That doesn’t mean they need to sit at home, though. More people are turning to smaller cities, national parks, and other destinations they’ve never considered as they plan their next adventure.

Utilizing chain hotels with reward programs is one way travelers can save money, as is choosing cabins or condos with kitchens. Every fourth grader in America (and their family) is eligible for a free National Parks pass , as are people with disabilities and military members. Travel does not need to be expensive to be valuable. The benefit of looking at travel through this lens is that these locations are still packed with amenities and attractions at a lower price point. Check out some of the best cheap places to travel in 2023 that might not be on your radar — yet. I was lucky enough to be invited as press by many of the locations, and got to explore all the fun they have to offer firsthand.

Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

California draws thousands of tourists each year to its most widely-known national parks, like Yosemite and Joshua Tree . They are fabulous, but the state is also home to Lassen Volcanic National Park . Located in the Cascade Mountains, Lassen has everything that visitors could need within the park, including lodging, junior ranger programs and dining options. Most visitors camp or stay at cabins or the guest ranch located within the park, but neighboring towns have a slew of motels and chain hotels that are incredibly affordable. According to Priceline , the average hotel room near Lassen costs around $116. There are also some kitschy properties like the River Inn , which evokes Schitt’s Creek vibes, for around $80 bucks a night.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

An example of Rust Belt Revival, the steel city has worked hard to shed its smoggy skies and expose its award-winning skyline . With more than 400 bridges and steeper streets than San Francisco, the city often surprises first-time tourists with how vast it is and how much there is to do. Pittsburgh is home to Mr. Roger’s legacy and is still the filming location for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood . Stop by The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to pose by Roger’s iconic shoes and explore four floors of hands-on activities. There are also Carnegie Museums , a Smithsonian location and the National Aviary to explore. An influx of tech and medical sector workers has kicked the local food scene up a notch, too. While in town, every tourist must ride the Duquesne Incline to the top of Mount Washington to absorb that stellar skyline. An average domestic plane ticket to Pittsburgh costs around $280.

Badlands, South Dakota

Most Americans have seen a photo of Mount Rushmore, but more than half have never been there. While stopping by the mountain carving is a cool photo opp, the Badlands of South Dakota have so many other attractions to visit in addition. It’s also ultra-affordable, with an average hotel price of under $100. The Crazy Horse Memorial is an impressive rock carving — still uncompleted — honoring the Lakota leader who fought back against colonization. Badlands National Park is one of the richest fossil beds in the world, making it particularly enticing for dinosaur lovers. Every visitor to the Badlands is also required (unofficially, of course) to stop by Wall Drug , the rambling curiosities shop that attracts millions of visitors each year.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia

Of America’s 63 national parks, New River Gorge is the most recent. The park is centered around the dramatic path of New River — which is, ironically, one of the oldest rivers on the planet. Geared towards adventure, there are more than 1,600 climbing routes , world-class whitewater rafting and amazing fishing. There’s plenty of camping within the park and hotels averaging $100 per night in nearby Beckley. ACE Adventure Resorts has everything from luxe cabins to rustic campsites as well as whitewater tours where kids raft free with an adult ticket. Locals love Tudor’s Biscuit World — a regional chain based in West Virginia — for a hearty breakfast before outdoor adventures.

Door County, Wisconsin

A popular getaway for locals, the waterfront fun of Door County is actually a great budget option for travelers from any region. Lodging in Door County ranges from chain hotels and Airbnbs to condo communities with amenities such as The Landmark Resort , with rooms starting at around $150. From sand sculpture contests to kayak and stand-up paddleboarding rentals, there are a ton of low-key affordable and free activities in Door County. While water sports are one of the biggest draws, it’s also a great winter-time getaway for ice fishing and cross-country skiing. It’s also a great spot to curl up with a good book in front of a fire.

Panama City, Panama

Who says you can't go international on a budget? Travelers who frequent Mexico’s resort towns should try Panama City, a wallet-friendly option with so much to do. While flights from the U.S. can be a bit expensive — Priceline cites an average cost of $650 — the affordability of lodging and dining makes up for it. At Riane Aeropuerto Hotel and Casino , which has a pool with swim-up bar, outdoor games and a round-the-clock airport shuttle, a standard hotel room is around $100. Hyatt’s Hotel La Compañía , located in a former Jesuit convent in the historical cultural district, offers a luxury stay for around $350 per night — half what a comparable room would be in Cancun. Along the Amador Causeway, which has a bit of a Key West Vibe, guests can explore museums, check out a sloth preserve, bike or grab dinner at a local favorite — Fishlovers Ceviche y Bar.

Québec City, Canada

Tourists regularly flock to Canada’s two largest cities, Toronto and Montreal, when it's time to head up north. But travelers shouldn't miss their third-largest metropolis, Vieux Québec, or Old Québec City. The destination is a UNESCO World Heritage site lined with cobblestone streets and 400-year-old buildings. Don’t worry about not speaking the language: Québécois kids begin learning English in first grade and residents are happy to assist tourists. With an average hotel price of $200 per night, Quebec City is often described by visitors as having a European feel due to the architecture and French language, but at a fraction of the cost of an overseas trip.

Titusville, Florida

Florida has developed a reputation for affordable oceanfront vacations, but the post-pandemic travel boom has left many top spots like Daytona and Tampa short on hotel rooms. Titusville, located near Cape Canaveral on “ The Space Coast ,” offers everything more populous beach towns do at a more affordable price. The flight to Titusville costs around $250 and hotels average just $150. The Kennedy Space Center provides a full day of space flight simulations, tours and interactive experiences for kids and adults. While rocket launches are visible from many spots in and around Titusville, Marriott has a new hotel with rooftop launch viewing. There’s also a robust ecotourism industry in the region. The Marine Discovery Center offers boat tours, exploration, and even an occasional manatee sighting.

Washington, DC

While it’s not a small city or a lesser-known vacation spot, the nation’s capital is a truly affordable vacation with endless entertainment options. The Smithsonian museums and galleries, as well as the National Zoo, are all admission-free. D.C. has a vibrant and ever-evolving food scene that is perfect for a splurge dinner during a trip, but the cafés within museums as well as the food trucks and food halls across the city are packed with options at a much lower price point. The metro system is simple to navigate, so most visitors who fly to the capital will not need to rent a car.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

A survey by Campspot for their 2023 Outdoor Almanac ranked Great Smoky Mountains National Park as one of the top five national parks Americans hope to visit in 2023. Gatlinburg, considered the gateway to Smokies, is the perfect home base for travelers who want to explore the area. There are family-friendly campgrounds packed with amenities like Jellystone Pigeon Forge ; motels and cottages like Carr’s Cottages with family suites starting under $150 and plentiful chain hotels. From Ripley’s museum to mountain coasters and even their own space needle , it's impossible to get bored in Gatlinburg.

Indianapolis, Indiana

The largest children’s museum in the world is located in Indianapolis. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis covers nearly 30 acres and draws over one million visitors each year. For families with kids, this attraction alone makes Indy a great destination for a vacation. There’s so much more to do there, though. Time your visit to coincide with the Indy 500 , or visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum to learn about the history of auto racing any time of year. For an experience with a slower pace, take a pedal boat tour on a portion of the Indiana Central Canal . Big Bear Lake, California

Located in San Bernardino National Forest , Big Bear Lake is an easy drive from Phoenix, SoCal and Las Vegas. Some visitors compare it to Lake Tahoe at a lower price point. The skiing includes more beginner trails and affordable lift tickets — and is generally less crowded than Tahoe. During the other months of the year, Big Bear has all the popular mountain town activities like kayaking, horseback riding, mountain coasters and ziplining. There’s also a vibrant mountain biking community in and around Big Bear Lake.

Leesburg, Virginia

For East Coast travelers looking for a quaint town to spend a quiet vacation in, Leesburg fits the bill. Located within Loudoun County just about an hour outside of Washington, D.C., it also makes a great home base from which to explore the city without staying in an expensive hotel. Downtown Leesburg looks like stepping into a postcard, with art galleries, restaurants and retail space tucked into historic buildings. Shoe’s Cup and Cork is a popular local spot located in a former shoe store that serves local sustainable food, wine and beer. In surrounding Loudoun County , there are tours of wineries, breweries and a woman-owned distillery, Catoctin Creek , inside a former Pontiac dealership. Flights to nearby Dulles Airport average just over $300 for domestic flights.

Flagstaff, Arizona

When tourists think of visiting the Grand Canyon , the most popular base camps are Phoenix and Las Vegas — which can be pricey. Flagstaff , which is just over an hour away, allows vacationers to explore the canyon on a smaller budget. Flying to Flagstaff can be expensive, but it makes a great road trip destination for folks who want to explore the southwest. There are many hotel and bed-and-breakfast options that average just over $100 per night. For a quirkier accommodation, the vintage Airstreams at Village Camp Flagstaff are adorably Instagrammable.

Columbus, Ohio

Half of the U.S. population lives within a one-day drive of Columbus — making it both accessible and affordable. Columbus is home to Jack Hannah’s zoo , which includes a water park called Zoombezi Bay . Visitors should give themselves two days to enjoy everything the zoo has to offer. Arches National Park is one of the most stunning geographical formations in America. It’s also very, very rural. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, visitors do not need a passport — which can be an expensive document to obtain. The average flight, according to Priceline, is also just around $300. San Juan is more than 500 years old and filled with historic buildings — with stunning beaches and rainforests surrounding it. Jekyll Island, Georgia

The sleepy sister to the more popular Saint Simon, Jekyll Island is a budget-friendly way to enjoy Georgia’s Golden Isles . The oceanfront Holiday Inn resort includes free meals for kids 11 and under at any time of day as well as sweeping views of the Atlantic with a full-service poolside tiki bar restaurant. It’s a quick trip over to Saint Simon for more plentiful dining options, but part of the draw of Jekyll Island is its slower pace. Estes Park, Colorado

This mountain town situated just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park is made for individuals and families who love adventure. The average flight to Estes Park is under $250, and the town is less than 90 minutes from Denver. With classic eateries like Penelope’s World Famous Burgers and Fries and more foodie-friendly spots such as Himalayan Curry & Kebab , there are great meals for any budget. ATV and horseback tours allow visitors to see the mountainous terrain, and the fly-fishing is world-class.

Vacationing somewhere new or traveling back to a favorite spot is always exciting, but there's no doubt that some getaways can get expensive. And with inflation affecting many bottom lines, it's easy to let a fear of high pricing keep you from booking your next trip. But travel is still a priority for Americans. According to the U.S. Travel Association, travel spending will increase this year, even compared with pre-pandemic levels. And while demand may be high, and steals and deals harder to come by (you should know the best time to book a flight and the best time to book a hotel ), there are plenty of cheap places to travel around the world and some great travel apps to help you plan.

We've got you covered with the best low-cost quick trips and big adventures, both in the U.S. and around the globe, and they all have one thing in common: They're perfect for traveling on a budget . These spots offer affordable adventures without giving up any of the relaxation or entertainment that make vacations so enjoyable. And all of them are equally delightful outside of peak seasons, when prices on both airfare and hotels decrease. (In Europe, for example, avoid the prime tourist months of June through August.) For the most cost-effective travel (and to scratch that wanderlust itch), here are our cheap travel picks.

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal offers all the greatest hits of Europe , but at a wallet-friendly price. Its capital city, Lisbon, ranked in the top 10 in a recent travel trends report from Kayak for its affordable international airfare (averaging $708 round trip) and low-cost nightly hotel prices (averaging $153 per night).

And you don't need a pocket full of cash to enjoy your time here. Simply walk the winding, picturesque cobblestone streets of Lisbon, lined with shops, restaurants, fountains and statues of leaders and poets. Step into a bakery to sample a pastel de nata (egg custard tart) for only 1 euro, or stop at one of the many stands to down a shot of ginja, the signature Portuguese cherry liquor (served in a tiny chocolate cup) for about 1.20 euro. Live performances of Fado, traditional Portuguese folk music, can be heard at spots like the Tasca do Chico, in the center of town, for an authentic and affordable experience.

Cartagena, Colombia

Set on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena, Colombia (touted as the most romantic city in the country and perfect for a romantic getaway ) blends heritage with sparkling ocean for a true tropical paradise. It's just a five-hour direct flight from New York and a three-hour hop from Miami. (No major international airport near you? Consider pricing out a separate ticket that gets you to your primary flight's location.) Airfare is typically in the mid-$500 range round trip, and Kayak lists their affordable hotels around $182 per night.

The capital city was declared a World Heritage Site thanks to its history and beautiful architecture, with colorful castles, cobblestone streets and colonial churches, so there's plenty to see. But what makes this city one of the best cheap places to travel is the low cost of living in a country that offers many of the first-world amenities and infrastructure you'd expect in a much more expensive location. It's the cheapest day out for a family of four compared with other top U.S. amusement parks , with the lowest daily food spend ($26.32), the lowest average daily cost for park tickets ($160 for a family of four) and hotels at just $79 per night. Want to make a week of it? Cedar Point, Ohio, is about a three-hour drive from Mason and came in a close second, with a daily average ticket price for a family of four at $180.

Mexico City, Mexico

While Mexico has a long list of popular travel destinations , we find this North American city to be a great bang for your buck. There are plenty of historical sites to see throughout the area, including a host of world-class museums and amazing art centers in Mexico City with inexpensive admission fees. Plus, the exchange rate is more than 18 pesos to $1.

In particular, the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento is a phenomenal place for history buffs to revel in relics of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The well-preserved urban landscape has landed the city on the World Heritage List, offering historic walking tours of the cobbled streets flanked with colorful homes, restaurants and shops. In the warmer seasons, residents throw block parties, at which you can enjoy homemade Uruguayan street food. And even if you're dining at restaurants, an entire day of eating could cost you less than $10.

Lodging options range from small boutiques for about $50 per night to hotel chains, such as Sheraton, for around $160 per night. Round-trip flight prices tend to average about $540. And since the country is in the Southern Hemisphere, their summer high season is December through February, which makes it one of the best travel destinations during winter . San Juan, Puerto Rico

Although we've seen round-trip airfares for around $200 from the East Coast, it can be especially handy to use your points or  credit card travel rewards to fly down to Puerto Rico. Hotels will cost most during peak winter and spring break periods. You'll also want to avoid the late summer and early fall because of hurricane season. But weather during the rest of the year is downright beautiful.

Bangkok, Thailand

Book a trip to the mystical country of Thailand, one of the most underrated travel destinations in the world. Known as the Land of Smiles, this Southeast Asian trip of a lifetime is complete with relaxing, adventurous, culinary and cultural experiences, all of which are totally budget-friendly. The most affordable city when it comes to travel is Thailand's capital of Bangkok. It's a city sometimes associated with its backpacking scene , however according to a luxury-on-a-budget survey by money.co.uk, Bangkok was the cheapest city in the world for luxury car rentals, Michelin-starred meals and five-star hotel stays, with the cheapest luxury hotels starting at $110. As far as getting there, we found flights for $860 round trip from the East Coast in the late spring (you'll want to avoid visiting during the steamy mid-summer months).

Once there, travelers can take advantage of other affordable luxuries, such as authentic Thai spas (at $10 an hour), incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars and a tuk-tuk ride (motorized three-wheel rickshaws popular around the city) for just $1.50 to see the golden temples that line the Chao Phraya River.

Toronto, Canada

Cosmopolitan Toronto, one of the most popular destinations in Canada , is just a 90-minute trip from 60% of the United States, so it's easy to reach for many vacationers. Plus, the U.S. dollar is strong against Canadian currency, so it will feel like the whole city is on sale. And according to Kayak, Toronto is one of the top cities for great hotel and airfare deals, with overnight stays averaging $202 a night and airfare about $375 round trip.

While you're there, head to the top of the CN Tower to take in the amazing views. Then, head to the neighboring Ripley's aquarium where you can ride the moving sidewalk through a shark tank. Both are included in the Toronto CityPASS, which features admission to five top attractions for a discounted rate and starts at just $56. The warmer months are peak season to visit Toronto, but they're also when you can take advantage of the city's most notable free attraction: the downtown beaches of one of the Great Lakes , Lake Ontario. Cape Town, South Africa

South Africa is without a doubt a bucket list destination  and was named one of the best places to travel in 2023 . But can it be affordable? We think so! If flying to South Africa has seemed too prohibitive to keep you from visiting the Rainbow Nation, think again. Recently, both Delta and United have introduced non-stop flights to the country, creating competition on the routes and in turn, making airfare cheaper than we've ever seen—especially in the off-peak seasons of late spring and late fall, when rates dip well below $900 round trip. After you arrive, the exchange rate of nearly 18 rand to the dollar means that most hotels can cost $100 or less. Gourmet restaurants and award-winning wines are also affordable at every budget.

Head to Table Mountain and overlook the city of Cape Town. Visit Robben Island and take in its rich multi-layered history. Antigua, Guatemala
