After a hugely successful tours across the UK and internationally, smash-hit American musical Chicago returns to the London stage, starring Martin Kemp as Billy Flynn. Last seen at the Garrick Theatre in 2012, the production returns to the Phoenix Theatre in March 2018, celebrating its 21st anniversary as the longest-running musical on Broadway. Based on Maureen Dallas Watkins' 1926 play of the same name, Chicago is the thrilling tale of 1920's nightclub performers turned murderess'. Dancing for their lives to stay off of Death Row, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly enlist the help of the smooth-talking Billy Flynn to help them clear their names. Featuring a sizzling score by Kander and Ebb, the musical includes numbers such as "All That Jazz", "Hot Honey Rag" and "Razzle Dazzle", amongst many more well-known show-stoppers. Casting includes Duncan James as Billy Flynn, Mazz Murray as Mama Morton, Alexandra Burke as Roxie and Josefina Gabrielle as Velma. One of the greatest musicals around, this is simply not to be missed!

Denise Van Outen stars as Velma Hart from 24 September 2018.

Absolutely brilliant! I went to see it with my mum in 2018 and Josefina Gabrielle, Duncan James and Alexandra Burke were fabulous - really, excellent casting choices! The show felt intimate and gave us chills the entire time. Would definitely see it again if possible!

Disappointing. Although the cast themselves where fantastic and I had no idea Caroline Flack was so talented, but there was no set/s - just the orchestra a few chairs and and a few feathers! I expected a large floor to ceiling 2-3 tier jail scene but no just some chairs! Poor value and I am sure there are better shows in London for over £100 per ticket. Travelled by train from the midlands just for the show - returning same day. Wasn’t worth the trouble.

What a truly amazing and enjoyable performance! Top quality cast who had relentless energy throughout, with an exceptional jazz band and thoroughly impressive and entertaining choreography. Surprisingly funny and interactive too which was a bonus! This is a must-see!

Worst show I have ever seen! Production, awful. Costumes, terrible. So much more could be done with this show. Definatly not worth the £170 cost for 2 tickets!

Incredbile performance but I was SO disappointed at the complete lack of diversity. There wasn't a single non-white cast member and barely even any brunettes. For a production like Chicago this felt almost like a conscious choice and one the director should be ashamed of.

what a birthday treat fantastic show brilliant cast thankyou for making my day

AMAZING - Well worth going to watch, the cast were spectacular, made you feel as though you were a part of it all.

Saw Chicago on July 21st for the 7:30, 19:30 showing and was very pleased. Theater is small and old but I am 5’6 and my husband 6’1 and there was just enough leg room. The cast was energetic and put on a great performance. I had read other reviews that bashed the production but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe my standards are lower but I had no complaints. Orchestra/ band was great.

Is there a 0 rating? Chicago – don’t waste your money or time on one of the most amateur productions and a cast that have reached their expiry dates! As South Africans, we do not have many opportunities to go to the theatre to see stage productions, and as part of our holiday, my partner wanted to treat me to a show for my birthday, and paid quite a handsome amount of pounds to see Chicago, in London! Yay, the excitement and build-up was incredible for the evening show at 19:30 on the 16th of July 2018, BUT… DISASTER struck! What a complete disappointment. The singing – off pitch Billy Flynn, you sound even worse than Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia, did you actually rehearse the part?; Roxie, your vibrato mutes the actual notes, not bad acting, but where’s your voice, or was it the ‘sound-engineer’…? Mr Sellofane – very missible, the reason why they chose you for this part. Shall I continue? The acting – did the cast have a drink-fest the previous night? There was no gutspa, passion or energy on stage, none whatsoever, like they were doing us a favour and forced themselves to ‘get through it’. The dilapidated theatre – the seats are ruined, worn and oh so uncomfortable! Is this a first world production in a first world country??? NOT! I had the privilege to see the amazingly fabulous and professional South African production (thank you Peter Toerien), and loved it so much that I went a second time – every cent worth it, in fact 100% better than this pathetic excuse of a high school musical! Can the owners of this production: 1. Ensure that cast members are cast properly in future, if you want to continue with this show, and change the theatre already! 2. Refund us! Or at least just cancel this show, it’s ruining the thrill and excitement of Chicago, the musical! Martin PS: thank you to the ‘female’ reporter, Mama Morton and the 3 or 4 dancers that gave it their all!

Amazing! Loved this production. Cast absolutely fantastic, music outstanding, well worth a visit. We loved every single moment and thought it was amazing value.

The next time you see a headline asking the question "Why is West End Theatre struggling?", here's the answer. I was unfortunate enough to experience this poor outing of a great musical a few weeks ago. Cuba Gooding Jr wasn't just awful, he was embarrassingly, watch it through your fingers awful. He can't sing, can't dance and has less stage presence than the cardboard in the scenery. He played the part like he was reading from an idiot board and even then managed to fluff the lines at least 5 times to my count. Ruthie Henshall was woefully miscast as Mama and seemed as bored singing and phoning in the lines as I was watching her. I truly feel for the rest of the cast who did their part brilliantly but probably end each performance with backache from all the heavy lifting of these two dead weights. The performance I saw cost me the best part of two hundred quid. I'd have had more fun setting the notes on fire.

Had seen the show several times in London back at The Cambridge and The Garrick and I already loved it then. Saw it multiple times on Broadway afterwards. And saw it 3 times at the end of May at The Phoenix. After seeing the show so many times you would think I would be blase but no. This London cast was/is absolutely magnificent. Sarah Soetaert is the best of all the Roxies I have seen. Josefina Gabrielle has now become my favorite Velma. Cuba Gooding Junior was fabulous. Ruthie was missing for the 3 shows I saw but her understudy was spot on. As was Cuba's. Bravo bravo bravo! And I will go back when Martin Kemp is on. Please extend your dates through the end of the year❤

Really enjoyed Chicago last night - Brilliant, upbeat show, quality dancing and singing. We were in the upper Circle and sometimes a bit hard to hear especially Cuba Gooding Junior who mumbled and to be fair was the least positive bit about the musical - thought he was poor!

The best show I’ve ever seen. It’s a must to watch!!

This is the third time I’ve seen Chicago - once years ago in London, when Ruthie Henshall played Roxie and more recently in New York. This was by far the best production - the musicians were fabulous. The actors just seemed to tick off each other brilliantly. It was great to see Ruthie come full circle and play mama - that was an added bonus! Although I’m usually sceptical of having a “big name” in a lead role for box office draw, Cuba Gooding Jr was wonderful - he played the Machiavellian lawyer to perfection, with just a the right amount of comic genius! Would recommend!

Ibought the ticket special to see MR Cuba Gooding JR ,at but he did not perform for the show on 26 of MAY at 3.00 pm,what was a bit dissapointing.

What a great production, I saw Chicago when it played at the Cambridge Theatre years ago and that was a dire production, but this one was brilliant. The ensemble were superb, the orchestra Razzled and Dazzled, Ruthie, Josefina and Sarah are true pros and a delight to watch them perform their art. Cuba relied on his comic timing to get him through, his voice was not strong enough and he only gave glimpses of pizzazz in his dancing which was a shame because he is an excellent actor. If you get the chance go an see this production it is very good.

An excellent performance, and the cast are truly exceptional! It is a shame that the cast is not more diverse however, with the exception of Cuba Gooding Jr. who is the only person from an ethnic minority background. Especially in such a multiculturally rich city as London, and being set in a 1930s American prison, it would have been nice to see more representation ofthis.

excellent show but a major flaw was the lack of diversity in the cast, Cuba Gooding Jr being the only exception. this is unacceptable for a show set in a circ 1930's Chicago prison playing in London a multi ethnic city. It is time that the issue of diversity on the London stage was addressed.

Stephen Sondheim wrote a song called There's No Place Like London – but was he right?

While the West End is undoubtedly the birthplace of musicals (sorry Broadway, but it's true), we can't help but notice that most major shows have outgrown their London home and moved out over the last few years.

From renowned classics like The Wizard of Oz and Chicago to more recent hits like Dear Evan Hansen, many shows are making their way across the country on tour.

This recent upswing in travelling musicals can only be considered a good thing as, instead of spending your weekends buying expensive train tickets into town, you can find a top quality West End show right on your doorstep.

Most of these touring shows also bring big names to your local area, like Michael Ball and Alfie Boe in Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular or Strictly Come Dancing's Johannes Radebe in Kinky Boots .

More like this

Plus, seats are bound to be cheaper - as we've covered in our how to get cheap theatre tickets piece, the cost of West End performances has gone up massively in the past few years.

Not convinced? That's OK, you can still take a look at our guide to the best West End shows . But otherwise, here are the best musicals to see on tour.

‘The Lord Of The Rings' UK Musical Sets Chicago U.S. Premiere

The Lord of the Rings musical that opened last year in the UK will stage its U.S. debut in Chicago this July, producers announced today.

Based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien and directed by Paul Hart, The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale will begin performances July 19 at The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, running through September 1. An international tour will follow, with venues and dates to be announced in June.

"I can't wait for this next step in the epic journey of The Lord of the Rings as we craft this new staging for the US premiere production with Chicago Shakespeare Theater for Chicago audiences,” Hart said in a statement. “We loved creating this version which was retold from the perspective of the Hobbits at The Watermill and will now be expanded far beyond those horizons. It will be thrilling to share with new audiences internationally as part of this next stage."

The open-air musical debuted last summer at the UK's Watermill Theatre in Berkshire, where Hart is the artistic director. The production features book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus and original music by A.R. Rahman, Finnish folk band Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale. (An earlier iteration was staged at London’s Royal Drury Lane in 2007).

The synopsis: As the Hobbits celebrate Bilbo Baggins' eleventy-first birthday in the Shire, he gifts his nephew Frodo his most precious belonging-a gold ring. This fateful moment launches Frodo on a legendary and perilous quest across Middle-earth to the darkest realms of Mordor to vanquish evil with his loyal Fellowship.
