The Chittorgarh fort in Rajasthan continues to fascinate historians even today. A visit to Chittorgarh fort, which covers an area of around 700 acres and has a perimeter wall of 13 km, is a must for travelers who want to see India’s most awe-inspiring architectural marvels.

It is one of the most significant forts of Rajasthan. As the local saying goes, if there is a fort it is Chittorgarh, the rest of them are smaller fortresses. Rajput valour, pride, sacrifice, and loyalty are reflected in this fort. As part of the ‘Hill Forts of Rajasthan’ World Heritage Site, it was also declared a World Heritage Site in 2013 by UNESCO.

1. Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort has a significant place in Indian history. Built by the Maurya Rulers in the 7th century AD, This fort is the largest in India and it is located in Rajasthan State. Spread across 692 acres of land, it is a remarkable example of the then Rajputana architecture.

Today, Chittorgarh Fort is a popular tourist spot filled with the heroic memories of the Rajput Rajas and Kings of the previous. Perhaps this is a major reason why tourists love to come here in great numbers annually. In 2013, Chittorgarh Fort was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The interesting thing is that Chittorgarh Fort was once known as the “Water Fort” as it had about 84 water bodies. This was way back in history, however. Today, out of these 84 water bodies only about 22 are left.

The Chittorgarh Fort is also believed to be a haunted site as many lives were lost here due to the Rajput Pratha (a ritual or tradition) of Jauhar. As such, many people avoid visiting the fort during the evening hours.

2. Padmini’s Palace (Maharani Shri Padmini Palace)

Queen Padmni’s palace is one of the best places to visit in Chittorgarh. This palace was the residing place of Rani Padmini (also hailed as Queen Padmavati) who was the wife of Maharana Rattan Singh, the monarch of the Mewar Kingdom who ruled between 1302 and 1303 CE.

The magnificent palace is a historical landmark connected to Rani Padmini’s act of selflessness after Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji stormed Chittorgarh. Many legends boast the bewildering beauty of Rani Padmini. It is said that her beauty won many hearts. One of which was of Alauddin who challenged to win over Chittor and Maharana Rattan Singh to make Rani Padmini his queen.

The two-story monument is elevated on rocky ground and stands quite strongly in the heart of the Chittorgarh Fort. A lotus pool surrounds the fort, adding to the attraction’s appeal. The pool, with its colourful lotuses portraying grace and beauty in the rocky Chittor Fort, makes one think of how magnificent this location must have been for royal women back in the day.

Visitors from all over the world come to Chittorgarh to see the impressive historical site and learn about the Rajputs of the Mewar Kingdom’s exploits and sacrifices. When Alauddin Khilji attacked the palace, the Rajput women gave their life at the Padmini Palace. Their willingness to battle or die rather than risk dishonour demonstrates their valour and courage. The Padmini Palace, albeit smaller than the other palaces on the grounds, is seen to be lovely and enthralling because of Rani Padmini’s beauty, intelligence, and charm as well as the tragic tale surrounding her demise. 3. Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory)

Located 600m away from Kumbha Palace and 8km from Chittorgarh Railway Station, Vijay Stambh or Victory Tower is an imposing historical monument located in Chittorgarh Fort of Rajasthan, India. This is also one of the best places to visit in Chittorgarh.

Maharana Kumbha of Mewar constructed the beautiful Vijaya Stambh in 1448 AD to mark his victory over the combined forces of Malwa and Gujarat led by Mahmud Khilji. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Vijay Stambh is a 9-story tower with a height of 37m. Made with red sand stone and white marble, this tower has a balcony on each level.

Rana Kumbha’s court scholar, Atri, began writing an inscription in the uppermost story that provides a thorough chronological chronicle of the lives and accomplishments of the monarchs of Chittaur. His son Mahesh later finished it.

The Rajput-styled Vijay Stambh is adorned with musical instruments, swords, god and goddess representations, and architectural embellishments. The Ramayana and Mahabharata are depicted in intricate sculptures on the tower. The tower is a remarkable example of religious pluralism practiced by the Rajputs.

The Kirti Stambh, also known as the Tower of Fame, is a famous and an ancient tower built on the premises of the Fort of Chittorgarh by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over the Khilji Dynasty.

It is the oldest tower at the premises of the fort and it towers up to 22 meters from the base. Based on the Solanki style of architecture, this tower attracts tourists from all over the world, so don’t miss it.

This seven-story tower, renowned for the elaborate carvings of Digambar, contains a lovely Adinatha statue on the second floor. As one ascends to the top floor, one is treated to breathtaking beautiful vistas of Chittorgarh.

5. Gaumukh Reservoir (Gau Mukh Kund)

A sacred spring of water called Gaumukh Kund is located on the western side of the renowned Chittorgarh Fort. Gaumukh literally translates to “cow’s mouth.” The water eventually enters the reservoir after passing through the rock fissures. Travelers are permitted to feed the reservoir’s fish.

Another well-known sight is the Rani Bindar Tunnel, which is close to this reservoir. This tunnel, according to a tradition, connects to a room below ground where Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh executed “Jauhar.”

8. Meera Temple & Kumbhshyam Temple

The Meera Bai Temple in Chittorgarh was constructed using a style of North Indian architecture that features four pavilions on each side of an open arcade in the area of the chamber. It is situated within the grounds of the Kumbha Shyam Temple at the Chittorgarh fort.

Chittor Fort once had an amazing 84 water bodies, but now it only has 22. One of these water bodies is a pond called Gaumukh Reservoir or Gaumukh Kund. The name of this water tank comes from the water spout which is shaped like the mouth of a cow.

Gaumukh Kund is a sacred site for the Hindus of this region. There is a shiv linga and an idol of Goddess Lakshmi at the base of the pond. Samdheshwar Temple is a temple that is close to this water tank. Feeding fish is a favorite activity for tourists who come to Gaumukh Kund.

8.) Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the places to spot wild animals near Chittorgarh is a wildlife sanctuary called Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary. Many river streams flow through this wildlife sanctuary and provide drinking water for the animals who live here. There are many lakes also located in this wildlife sanctuary and you can spot animals and birds coming near the lake to drink water.

The dry deciduous forest makes up much of the landscape of Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary. The various creatures you will find here are porcupines, wild boars, hyenas, jungle cats, antelopes, hawks, eagles, cranes, and others. You can also visit Bassi Fort Palace near the sanctuary. A jungle safari is the best way to spot the animals in their natural habitat.

9.) Vijay Stambh

One of the finest structures that you can visit in Chittor Fort is a victory tower which is called Vijay Stambh. This is one of the most elegant and scenic monuments that you can visit in Chittor Fort. Rana Kumbha, the king of Mewar, built Vijay Stambh to celebrate his victory over Mahmud Khilji. Vijay Stambh is so tall that you can view it from a far distance also. This tower was built between 1458 and 1488.

Vijay Stambh has elegant and beautiful sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. You can also find sculptures and carvings of musical instruments, religious symbols, weapons, and others on this tower. Vijay Stambh is built of red sandstone and marble stone. Every one of its nine storeys has a balcony, which is carved with exquisite elegance. You can climb 157 steps to reach the top from where you can view panoramic scenes of the surrounding areas.

10.) Sathis Deori Temple

This is a group of twenty-seven temples in Chittorgarh, that are built for the Jain Teerthankaras. Saathis Deori Temple has spectacular carvings and architecture. The sculptures in these temples are elegant in their artistic expression.

These temples were built during the 11th century and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bhagwan Adinath is the main deity of these temples. The interiors have exquisitely carved sculptures of figures of Jain mythology carved on them. This temple complex is also known as Sattavish Deori Temple. This temple complex is a pilgrimage site for the Jain religion.

11.) Kirti Stambh

Kirti Stambh is one of the two famous victory towers in Chittor Fort. A Jain merchant built the tower in the 12th century for the Rajput king Rawal Kumar Singh. It is called Kirti Stambh as it glorifies the prestige of the Jain religion.

Kirti Stambh is also called the Tower of Fame. The tower is seven storeys high and is built in devotion to the first Jain Tirthankara, Rishbhdev. The sculptures of damsels, saints, along with several other characters from Jain mythology are sculpted on this tower. Each sculpture is vivid in its artistic style and is the supreme example of the Solanki architectural style.

Kirti Stambh is 22 meters high tower with a base that is 30 feet wide. There is an observation hall on the topmost storey from which you can view scenic landscapes.

12.) Kumbha Shyam Temple

Among the several temples that you can visit in Chittor Fort is a temple known as Shyam Temple. The temple is dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu called Varaha Avatar. The temple has magnificent sculptures of Hindu deities and wonderful carvings on stone.

Rana Kumbha built this temple with the traditional Nagara style of architecture that was prevalent in North India at that time. One of the most beautiful temples in Chittor Fort is this temple. It has beautiful carvings, sculptures, and idols. The temple is also known as Kumbha Shyam Temple. Meera Bai spent many years at this temple. The pillars, dome, ceilings, and walls, are sculpted with exquisite carvings and are one of the most beautiful sights in Chittor Fort.

13.) Sanwariaji Temple

Another famous tourist attraction of Chittorgarh is a temple called Sanwariaji Temple. The temple comes on the road between Chittorgarh and Udaipur. Devotees have tremendous faith in the deity of this temple, Sanwariyaji. A deity is a form of Lord Krishna. The temple is famous for its colorful wall paintings, sculptures, and carvings. The deity is also known as Sanwariyaji Seth.

The idol of Sanwariyaji is sculpted out of black stone to give a dark skin complexion to the idol. Merchants, traders, and businessmen have tremendous devotion to the deity of this temple. Sanwariyaji Temple is situated approximately 40 km from Chittorgarh.

14.) Maha Sati

This place is approximately 110 km from Chittorgarh. The memorials here are made for the Rajput rulers who ruled over Chittorgarh. The memorials are similar to that at Ahar near Udaipur. All these cenotaphs have beautiful Rajput architecture and carvings.

15.) Ratan Singh Palace

One of the historic palaces that you can visit in Chittor Fort is a palace called Ratan Singh Palace. Though the palace is in ruins, whatever remains of this palace is enough to suggest it as one of the more impressive royal palaces in Chittor Fort. The architectural style of this palace is unmatched in its beauty. There is a small pond beside the palace and it is called Ratneshwar Talab.

The palace is also called Ratan Singh Mahal. One can make out the structures of the royal courts, chambers, pavilions, chhatris, and balconies in this palace. The palace was made somewhere between 1528 and 1531 AD. Amir Khusro, the celebrated Sufi poet mentioned the beauty of this palace in his poems, when he accompanied Alauddin Khilji during his attack on Chittor Fort.

16.) Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the wildlife sanctuaries that you can visit on your trip to Chittorgarh is Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is named after Sita of the Ramayana. According to popular legend, Sita lived here in the ashram of Sage Valmiki after she was separated from Lord Ram. The sanctuary has several types of trees such as teak, bamboo, Gulmohar, rudraksha, bel, and others. You can also find some rare medicinal herbs. Many rivers flow through the forest. The wild creatures that you can spot here are wild boar, spotted deer, nilgai, jungle cat, hyena, caracal, and others.

Menal is one of the places that you can visit during your trip to Chittorgarh. Menal is a heritage place and is famous for its architecture, temples, waterfall, and bird-watching site. Menal is close to Chittorgarh and also close to other famous places such as Mandalgarh, Rawatbhata, Bhilwara, and Shahpura.

You can explore the village and learn a lot about the rustic lifestyle of the tribals who live here amid nature and wildlife. You must visit Menal Waterfall during the monsoon months. You must visit Bhainsrorgarh Wildlife Sanctuary when you visit Chittorgarh. The wildlife sanctuary is the perfect place to spot hyenas, foxes, jackals, antelopes, wild boars, crocodiles, and many other creatures. The sanctuary is named after Bhainsrodgarh Fort. The fort is located on the confluence of the Chambal and Bamani Rivers. The impregnable fortress is now converted into a luxury heritage hotel. You can also spot river dolphins swimming in the Chambal river waters.

19.) Tulja Bhawani Temple

This temple is one of the temples that you can visit on your Chittorgarh trip. The temple is very ancient and is dedicated to the Hindu deity known as Tulja Bhawani. The temple has a magnificent architectural style and dates back to the 16th century. The local legend says that when Ram, Sita, and Laxman of the Ramayana were in their exile, they visited this place and worshipped the mother goddess for nine days. The mother goddess was pleased with their devotion and appeared before them in the form of Tulja Bhawani.

20.) Samadhisvara Temple

The Samadhiswara Temple is located in Chittor Fort. It was built somewhere around the 11th century and has incredible architecture and sculptures. The carvings on stone depict battles, royal processions, religious themes, deities, hunting, and scenes from everyday life in those times. The main deity of this temple is Lord Shiva, who is referred to as Samadhiswara.

21.) Mahanal Temple and Math

The magnificent Mahanal Temple is located close to Chittorgarh. This is a temple of Lord Shiva and was built somewhere around the 11th century. The fantastic architecture of this temple is eye-catching and a beauty to behold. The temples come on the road between Chittorgarh and Bundi. There are decorative sculptures of Hindu deities and wonderful architecture in the pillars, walls, ceilings, domes, and doors.

22.) Mandalgarh Fort

Mandalgarh Fort is one of the most powerful forts that you can visit near Chittorgarh. The local Bhil tribes originally built the powerful fort. But later on, the Rajput king Rana Kumbha rebuilt this impregnable fortress. The fort is considered to be one of the oldest forts in Rajasthan. There is a shiva temple inside the fort. Mandalgarh Fort was the place where many fierce battles were fought. The fort is built atop a hill from where you can view the scenic landscapes of the surrounding region.

Among the exhibits that you can visit are our paintings, scriptures, weapons, coins, terracotta figures, costumes, and metal sculptures.

The Chittorgarh fort spans at the area of 7000 acres and to witness the historical monuments like Kirti Stambh, Vijay Stambh, Palace of queen Padmawati, you need to walk a lot. But that’s not the only option, you can take an Elephant Ride to explore the beauty of Chittorgarh. But, when I visit the fort, I prefer to take a walk and explore every part of the fort which has its own significance.

I guess you guys watched the famous movie ‘Padmawat’ and the place where the queen and the womens of Chittorgarh do ‘Jauhar’ was maintained very well. The temples inside the fort and the sacred Gaumukh reservoir mesmerise you, from this point you can enjoy the beautiful view of the fort. Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory)

In the 14th century the Vijay Stambh or The Tower of Victory was built by Mahrana Kumbha after defeating the Muslim Rulers of Gujarat. The nine story Vijay Stambh stands tall at Chittorgarh Fort and the architecture of the Victory Tower is splendid. You can take a glimpse at the architect of hindu god and goddess and from the top of this tower you can take a panoramic view of the town – Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. 

Kirti Stambh

The Rajasthan Chittorgarh, Kirti Stambh was built in the 12th Century by the Jain Merchant. The seven storey Kirti Stambh is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankar, Adinath Ji who was 1st Jain Tirthankar. 

Padmini Palace

Queen Padmawati is wife of King Rana Ratan Singh and the people of Chittorgarh praised Maharani Padmawati’s beauty lavishly. The Palace of Maharani Padmawati is situated in the middle of a pond in the name of the queen itself. It was believed that Ala-ud-din-khilji saw the water image of queen Padmawati and was fond of her. The Padmawati Palace was built inside the Chittorgarh Fort of Rajasthan. 

Gaumukh Reservoir 

Gaumukh Reservoir is a sacred place where the water is filled and beside the Gaumukh Reservoir, the temple of Shiva is situated and the devotees poured water to Shiva Linga from the Gaumukh Reservoir. The name Gaumukh is derived from the rock which is formed in the shape of a cow.

Fateh Prakash Palace

The Fateh Prakash Palace was built in the Rajputana Style for the residential purpose by Maharana Fateh Singh. The Rajputana architecture Palace is now converted into Musuem by the Government, where you take a glimpse of artefacts, wooden crafts, weapons of traditional style, the traditional Rajputana costumes and the architecture of the palace at Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. The timing to visit the palace is from 9:45 am to 4:45 pm.

Ratan Singh Palace

The Chittorgarh Ratan Singh Palace was once lived by Maharaja Ratan Singh during the winter season. The place is quite interesting from a tourist perspective.

Rana Kumbha Palace

The Chittorgarh’s Rana Kumbha Palace was built by the then Maharaja Kumbha which has its own rajputana architect. The Palace is built in a structured format which has Tripoli Darwaza placed at the entrance of the palace. Nowadays the Rana Kumbha Palace is ruined but due to its significance, the government is concerned for the restoration. 

Jaimal and Patta Palace

The Palace of Jaimal and Patta was built at the top of hills of Chittorgarh Fort and the palace is the symbol of bravery. In the war between Maharana Uday Singh and Akbar, both Jaimal and Patta fought for the family of Maharana and lost their lives. After that the palace was built in their name which was later removed by Aurangzeb. 

Kalika Mata Temple

The Kalika Mata Temple was built in the 8th century and later in the 14th century the temple was rebuilt by Maharana Hameer Singh. The temple is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Maa Kalika which symbolises power and strength. 

Meerabai Temple

Meerabai, the devotee of Lord Krishna worshipped at the Meerabai Temple which is designed in the North Indian Style. The architecture and design of the temple are beautiful, and the pavilions at the corners of the Meerabai Temple look elegant.

Tulja Bhavani Temple

The Temple of Tulja Bhavani was built in the 16th century by Prithvira’s Maid, Banveer. Later the Chittorgarh Fort was dominated by the Marathas who placed the idol of Tulja Devi in the Temple, hence, it is known as Tulja Bhavani Temple. 

Kumbha Shyam Temple

The Temple was built in the 8th Century and the statue of Lord Varaha was placed in the temple. But later in the 16th century the Kumbha Shyam Temple was rebuilt by Maharaja Kumbha in the Indo-Aryan style and the statue of Lord Kumbhashyam was placed in the temple.

Bhainsrorgarh Fort

Bhainsrorgarh Fort was built by Rawat Lal Singh – II in the 17th century which is at the height of 200 feet and the fort is surrounded by Chambal and Brahmani Rivers. The Bhainsrorgarh Fort is now converted into a luxurious hotel at the Aravali ranges. 

Baroli Temple

The ancient Hindu Temple Baroli was built in the 9th century which is situated at the Brahmani and Chambal Rivers in Rawatbhata which is 115km from  Chittorgarh District. In the Baroli Temple, the idol of Lord Shiva is worshipped, and if you want to experience the hindu architecture then plan for the Baroli Temple.

Sanwaliya Ji Temple

The famous temple Sanwaliya Ji is built at the highway of Udaipur and Chittorgarh and every year hundreds and thousands of devotees worship the idol. If you visit the temple, don’t miss the aarti and rajbhog.

Samideshwar Temple

The temple was built in the 11th century by Parmar Raja Bhog of Malwa. The architecture of this temple is immensely beautiful and you can’t take your eyes off it. At the Samideshwar Temple, the idol of three faced Lord Shiva which was worshipped by the devotee.

Bhamshah ki Haveli

Bhamshah was a Rajput warrior who fought various battles under Maharana Pratap including the famous HaldiGhati War. The Bhamshah Haveli is now under the Archeological Survey of India and near haveli, Mahadev Temple is placed, and also has moti and naagin bazaar. Bassi Village and Wildlife Sanctuary

The Bassi Village was built in the 16th century and famous for the wooden art, even the temples which are built are of wooden. The Wildlife Sanctuary in the Bassi Village was built in 1988 at the Vindhyanchal hill range. Earlier the forest was used by Mahraja’s for hunting, now you can enjoy the wetlands habitats, trees and variety of animals including the migrant bird Orai, Bassi, Sarana and Sarus Crane.
