Seattle’s Booming Cider Scene

Behind the barrel: seattle’s booming cider scene, we take our cider seriously in the emerald city—here’s where to find the best sips this apple season., emily boynton.

Washington state’s craft cider industry is relatively young but undeniably thriving, with Seattle at the tasting epicenter. There are plenty of ways to sip your way around the city, from a host of urban taprooms and cideries to an annual celebration of all things hard cider (plus, a number of cideries open to visitors just a short drive away).

Capitol Cider Blue Rose Photography

In the heart of Capitol Hill, Capitol Cider (*818 E Pike St) is the largest independent cider bar in the country, with 20 rotating ciders on tap and more than 200 unique bottles. Pair your pick with a dish off the 100 percent gluten-free menu, or cozy up in one of the roomy booths downstairs with a cider flight—for a spicy kick, try the three pepper flight featuring Finnriver Habañero.

At Number 6 Cider (945 Elliot Ave W, Ste 203) in Interbay, taste Northwest-centric flavors and seasonal releases from cold brew to honey and ginger. To try one of their six ciders on tap, stop next door at the Citizen Six (945 Elliot Ave W, Ste 203) tasting room and cafe serving Korean-Mexican fusion fare (the bulgolgi fries are a must).

Locust Cider ’s (5309 22nd Ave NW, Ste D) newly minted Ballard taproom offers both indoor seating and an outdoor patio for sipping throughout the year (it’s dog friendly, too). The folks behind the bar are happy to provide on-tap recommendations ranging a crisp Huckleberry Perry to local favorite Vanilla Bean.

Schilling Cider House Lauren Stelling

At nearby Schilling Cider House (708 N 34th St) in Fremont, curate your own flight from the 32 local and international ciders on tap, or choose from more than 300 ciders available by the bottle (the largest lineup in the nation). For a behind-the-scenes look at the production process, spend an afternoon at the Schilling Tasting Room in Auburn (a half-hour drive south) and sip limited release drafts right in the warehouse. Try the Chaider, a spiced chai cider infused with meant-for-fall aromatic flavor, or Co-Founder and Head Cidermaker Colin Schilling’s current favorite, Excelsior, a semisweet draft made with bitter heirloom apples. “The best way to learn about cider is through tasting,” Schilling says.

Last but not least, SoDo-based Seattle Cider Company (4660 Ohio Ave S) prides itself on highlighting the natural flavors of Washington apples.

“Everything you taste is fermented with the apples,” says Head Cidermaker Scott Katsma. Discover your new favorite flavor at The Woods, an expansive tasting room shared with Two Beers Brewing Co. boasting classic flavor profiles (dry and semisweet) and limited supply and seasonal flavors like Olympia Honey, Oaked Maple, and Berry Rosé.

Look to the Northwest Cider Association for the inside scoop on everything from new and noteworthy cideries to local production techniques. With fall harvest fast approaching, Executive Director Emily Ritchie recommends taking full advantage of the season by attending a festival or tasting, or even planning a visit to an area orchard. “It’s really fun to go out where the apples are growing and the grass is under your feet, and sip cider at an actual orchard.” Alpenfire (220 Pocket Ln), Eaglemount Wine and Cider (1893 S Jacob Miller Rd), and Finnriver Farm & Cidery (124 Center Rd) on the eastern end of the Olympic Peninsula all make for an excellent day trip.

Unlocking the Full Potential of Culinary Apples

Thu, Mar 21, 2024 10:00 AM — 10:45 AM Google Calendar • ICS

Join Scott Labs and Yonder Cider for a virtual workshop on increasing quality when working with culinary apples, concentrate, and less interesting bases than cider apples. Cider makers often find that they want to scale production and need to use culinary apple juice to do that economically, but don’t want to lose the nuance and quality that comes from using cider apples. Scott Labs is collaborating with Yonder Cider to discuss how to make culinary apple juice fall more in line with a cider apple profile in terms of flavor, aroma, and texture using a variety of tannins, mannoproteins and other fermentation products.

Vashon Island CiderFest

Sat, Oct 7, 2023 1:00 PM — 5:00 PM Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce (map) Google Calendar • ICS

Join us on Saturday October 7th, 2023 for CiderFest, when the Vashon community celebrates of all things cider! The day will be filled with fun events, exhibits and treats for all ages.

Cider has deep roots in American history. In colonial times, hard cider was by far the most popular alcoholic beverage, far more than whiskey, wine, or beer. Apple orchards were planted throughout the states, not for eating but for making cider. Many small farms grew cider apples and produced cider, sometimes supplementing farm worker wages with the fermented product.

Why cider lost popularity in the US is up for scholarly debate, but as more people look to eat local, support sustainable agriculture and help small farms grow artisan crafted local ciders are growing in popularity. Vashon is home to many small farms, specialty orchards and talented cider makers. Even the casual gardener has apple and pear trees growing in their yards and probably has a cider press in the garage.

Big Chill Cider and Harvest Fest

Sat, Oct 9, 2021 12:00 PM — 7:00 PM Pybus Public Market (map) Google Calendar • ICS

The cider story has been unfolding over the past decade in Central Washington.  Early adaptors include Kevin Van Reenan, owner of Pear Up, located in East  Wenatchee. Van Reenan’s “perrys” helped establish the category in America and are  now in Asia and Europe. Rootwood Cider in Manson started grafting cider apples  into their fourth generation family orchard around eight years ago. Today, they’re  pouring at two visitor locations. All through the region portions of family orchards are  being repurposed to help the cider flow. Some labels like Manchester Road, a  consistent crowd favorite, are inspired by classic British beverages, others like Union  Hill are innovating new territory. The awards and results speak for themselves.

On October 9, 2021, virtually all of the region’s hard cider makers will be pouring at  the third annual Big Chill Cider and HarvestFest, staged this year for the first time at  Pybus Public Market. Celebrate the season with over 40 choices of cider from 14  labels along with displays, games, music, food, cider making and a free kid’s harvest  play area. Discover the intricacies of cider and what to serve with it while visiting  with the makers behind the flavors. The Big Chill also hosts the biggest, annual  cider pop-up store in Eastern Washington, offering virtually every Central WA hard  cider including Pear Up, Rootwood, Manchester Road, ChelanCraft, Archibald  James, Union Hill, Bad Granny, Phillippi, Ole Swede, Snowdrift, Steelhead, Barns  Etc, Centre Ring, and introducing Watercore.

From dry to sweet, from pear to apple, explore the newest and finest entries onto the  local beverage scene at The Big Chill Cider and Harvestfest. Tickets start at $25 for  this outdoor event and can be purchased: https://savorcentralwa.com/events .

Swift Cider Taproom Grand Opening!

cider tour seattle

Portland, Oregon – Swift Cider opened their first ever taproom this February and they are inviting the community to celebrate the Grand Opening on Friday March 6 from 4pm to 9pm at 100 NE Farragut Street #101, Portland, Oregon.

After years as one of Portland’s leading distributed cider producers, Swift’s jump into retail marks a major milestone: “Opening the taproom means drinkers can taste the dozens of seasonal and small-batch barrel-aged ciders that we release in limited quantities each year,” says founder and head cider maker Aidan Currie.

From their twelve taps, Swift pours a rotating lineup of their own ciders alongside craft beer, wine, guest cider taps, hard seltzer, kombucha, water kefir and CBD soda. “Our local neighborhood, Piedmont, was founded by prohibitionists, so there has historically been a limited number of bars here. We created a community space where you can appreciate great cider and all types of fermented beverages,” says Currie.

The 500 square foot taproom seats 39 in a warm industrial space notable for its timbers-trussed ceiling, stainless tanks, oak barrels, warm lighting, local art, and greenery. A discreet projector screens local sports while a shuffleboard table and stack of board games invites patrons to play. Plans are in the works to add patio seating by summertime. To complement the drinks, Swift stocks a regular menu of snackable, allergen-friendly bites and plans to run pop-up food nights to showcase their favorite cider pairings.

During the Grand Opening Party, Swift will run cidery tours and let visitors explore their new digs in the newly renovated General Industry building, which houses a collection of local maker businesses. Their neighbor Happy Mountain Kombucha will also host a showcase of their new space down the hall. A Champagne toast is scheduled for 7pm that will kick off the music and dancing. All ages are welcome.

Swift Cider launched in 2015 and has grown into a regionally distributed cider brand in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. They have a mission to make exceptional cider with fresh, whole ingredients and inspire playful, creative communities like their namesake the Chapman Swifts. Their ciders have earned significant acclaim at the world’s largest cider competitions with 21 medals, including the Best Medium Cidery of the Year at the Portland International Cider Cup. Their normal taproom hours run Thursday and Friday from 4pm to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 9pm.

Wassail at Western Cider

Sat, Feb 9, 2019 5:00 PM — 11:00 PM Western Cider (map) Google Calendar • ICS

On February 9th, Western Cider hosts the seasonal rite of Wassail. The ancient ritual of wassailing apple trees is well known in the cider regions of England. Western Cider is in their second year of bringing their version of Wassail to Montana. Humorous and strange rituals are performed to ward off bad spirits from the orchard and encourage the good spirits to provide a bountiful crop for the following year.

In some traditions, the men of a village went out to the orchards carrying the “wassail bowl” filled with warm cider, to serenade and ridicule the apple trees into producing fruit.

The festivities will include costumed pageantry, singing, theater, and music in their outdoor cider garden. Ken Grinde will produce and direct a small play for this year’s event. Ken has assembled a group of local actors, a choir, and the River City Players to entertain. The first cider from Western’s orchard harvest will be released the night of Wassail. They are also serving a special, hot drink made from a New England style cider they call The Colonial.

Western Cider is encouraging everyone to attend the festivities in “Old World” costumes. They will be hosting several workshops in their tasting room to help prepare you for the festivities including mask, crown, and costume making – in partnership with Zootown Arts Community Center, Farm Hand Farm, and Earth Within Flowers. The Clay Studio of Missoula previously hosted a clay cup making class to equip attendees with an old-style cup to drink out of during the celebration.

You can follow Western Cider’s stories on Instagram and Facebook as they familiarize the community with this ancient celebration. “Since last year, our goal with Wassail has been to bring the community together during a bleak time of year in the hope of a good harvest. We want to partner with artists, performers, and anyone excited to add to Wassail’s participatory nature. It’s a holiday we know Missoula will have fun with once they understand its heritage and concept. It’s the best party in Missoula!” says Matthew LaRubbio, co-owner at Western Cider.

Western Cider is asking that people dress warm and arrive around 5pm on Saturday, February 9th. A suggested entry of $5 is being asked to support the performers. See facebook.com/westerncider/events

Get Excited For Cider

The region's largest cider festival is back in south lake union..

The Cider Summit Seattle is back for its 11th year. After a pandemic hiatus, the festival returns to the waterfront of Lake Union Park adjacent to MOHAI on September 9 and 10.

Aerial view of South Lake Union and MOHAI.

More than 50 cideries will set up at the festival to share their artisanal sips ranging from ciders to meads, cocktails, apple spirits, and more. Patrons can expect Pacific Northwest faves and international classics, with cider makers on site to share tasting notes and the more-than-occasional cider anecdote.

“We are thrilled to welcome back our community after the two-year hiatus,” said Ian Shapiro, Cider Summit co-founder and producer.

“Cider Summit is the perfect way to greet the beginning of fall for cider lovers and the cider curious. This year’s festival holds extra meaning and it feels great to be back together.”

In addition to the tastings, festival-goers can enjoy bites from Seattle Monster Dogs and Frelard Tamales, and more.

Plus, don’t miss:

  • Seeds Cider Cocktail Lounge featuring an array of fruit spirits, pommeau, and more.

  • Event store featuring bottles and cans to go, festival merch, and extra tasting tickets.

VIP tickets ($69.19) are available online only until September 8. The experience includes a festival tasting glass, early entry on September 9, and 18 tasting tickets. General admission tickets ($55.98 through Sept. 8 and $60 at the gate) includes a festival tasting glass and 14 tasting tickets.

More cider after hours

Used up all of your tasting tickets, but want more sips? Explore the SLU neighborhood after the Cider Summit for more delicious ciders. Tapster Seattle features a nice selection of ciders among its more than two-dozen self-serve taps. Teku Tavern is mostly beer focused, but you can find Washington-based ciders from Yonder, Tieton, and Seattle Cider on tap, plus a number of choices in its bottle section. Mix in some mini golf with cider offerings at FlatStick Pub — their tap list currently has selections from One Tree, Greenwood Cider, and Channel Marker.

Be sure to explore the South Lake Union Business Directory for more great dining and drinking options in the neighborhood.

Orchard to Glass: Taste Washington Cider

Autumn in Washington State means falling leaves, brisk temperatures, and ripe apples ready for the picking.

As a state known for its apples, it should come as no surprise there are plenty of places to taste cider in Washington. Visit during the fall for the chance to enjoy the tangy zing of a warm glass of fresh-pressed apple cider, or unwind with a cold bottle of hard apple cider. No matter which type of cider you prefer, Washington State is the best place to find it. According to the USDA, Washington produces more than 6 billion pounds of  apples every year.  That’s more than all the other 49 states combined.

Where to Taste Cider in Washington

Family-run farms across the state have produced fresh cider for years, perfecting their growing and pressing techniques along the way. At the same time, cider mills in Washington are creating delicious apple-based alcoholic beverages using innovative ingredient combinations. Here are some great options for where to taste Washington cider across the state.

Please check individual business hours before visiting.

Fresh-Pressed Cider

Fresh-pressed Washington cider (the non-alcoholic kind) comes from squeezing the juice out of the entire fruit using an apple press. To find a great natural cider that goes straight from the orchard to your glass, stop by one of these Washington farms. Families can often enjoy apple-picking, games, and more.

West Valley U-Pick Yakima

Head to Yakima’s beautiful West Valley for an incredible variety of u-pick produce and freshly pressed cider. Enjoy a day in the field this season harvesting everything from apples, peaches, pears, pluots, grapes, and plums to an array vegetables. Find their produce schedule on their website. The Yakima Valley is the leading producer of apples in the U.S., and you’ll find Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp and Blondee apples at West Valley U-Pick mid-August to October. After you pick, press your own apple cider on their old-fashioned hand-cranked cider presses. They’ll even press for you if you like. Add pears and grapes for an extra burst of flavor. Bring your own jug, or cider jugs are available for purchase.

Bellewood Farms Lynden

This family-run orchard in the lush northwest corner of the state features a whopping 25,000 apple trees of 21 different varieties.

Come for Harvest Festival (September-October) and pick your own juicy Honeycrisp and Cosmic Crisp apples. Bring the kids and navigate the corn maze, ride the apple bin train, or book a farm tour, all while taking in gorgeous views of snow-covered Mount Baker.

In addition to serving up fresh-pressed cider daily, Bellewood Farms makes a unique bubbly sparkling apple cider. This refreshing non-alcoholic drink highlights a blend of apple types, which are pressed and carbonated on the farm.

The exterior red barn of Lattin's Country Cider Mill & Farm

Lattin’s Country Cider Mill & Farm Olympia

Since 1976, Lattin’s Country Cider has been producing top-notch cider at its charming farm. Lattin’s presses fruity ciders like blackberry and strawberry, plus a delightful original apple cider, and a spiced apple cider for folks who want a bolder flavor.

Lattin’s market sells numerous apple products, including farm-picked whole apples, apple butter, apple sauce, and dried apple chips, and the bakery offers fritters and cider donuts.

And if you’ve never had an apple cider slushie, Lattin’s is the place to try it. You’ll be amazed at how satisfying the tart and tang of apple cider tastes when it’s reimagined into an icy slush form.

Swans Trail Farms Snohomish

For nearly four decades, Ben and Carol Krause — and now their kids — have operated Swans Trail Farms. They produce fresh Washington cider pressed daily using apples picked straight from their orchards along the banks of the Snohomish River.

Swans Trail sticks to four apple types: the sweet and crisp Ambrosia, Cosmic Crisp, and Honeycrisp varieties, plus the more tart Jonagold. On autumn weekends, visitors can pick their own apples from the tree, or observe the cidermaking process at the cider mill.

During the Fall Festival (late September-October), the Swans country store, donut shop, and apple shack sell mouthwatering treats like caramel apples, cider donuts, and apple-filled pastries.

Hard Cider Producers

Take things up a notch with some distinctive, apple-based alcoholic beverages. Head to one of these cideries for a taste of Washington’s apple bounty.

A sampler flight of five ciders sits on a table at Finnriver Farm & Cidery

Finnriver Farm & Cidery Chimacum

Finnriver, located on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, offers more than just a great beverage. With a food menu, live music, art events, and festivals year-round on an 80-acre farm, a visit to Finnriver is an entertainment experience that tickles all the senses. Guests can participate in tastings and tours through the organic fields and the “hall of tanks” to learn how this Washington cider is produced. In addition to hard ciders, Finnriver also serves up seasonal hot drinks and non-alcoholic offerings.

A man holds a glass of fresh-pressed cider in front of a bin of apples at Finnriver Farm & Cidery

Finnriver uses blends of Washington dessert apples and other produce (habanero peppers, berries, lavender) to create a range of thoughtful products. Try Sidra, a Spanish-style dry cider with an acidic tart, or Apple Abbey, a Belgian-style semi-sweet cider with nutty and fruity notes.

Seattle Cider Co. Seattle

“Not your standard cider” is the tagline of Seattle Cider, which in 2013 became the city’s first cidery since the Prohibition era. While the company makes several different ciders, including basil mint and seasonal pumpkin and marionberry flavors, its original apple-based cider remains a customer favorite. It’s a dry, semi-sweet cider that smartly highlights the rich flavor of its locally-grown apples, rather than overpowering them with extra sugars.

Find Seattle Cider at the vibrant Woods Tasting Room in the city’s SoDo neighborhood, or on tap in bars across the region and in 14 states.

Snowdrift Cider Co. East Wenatchee

The hot, dry summers of East Wenatchee help to cultivate an unusually large number of apple varieties in Snowdrift’s orchard, including lesser-known types like Dabinett, Frequin Rouge, and Foxwhelp. That gives Snowdrift the flexibility to experiment with creative flavor combinations for its small-batch artisan beverages.

The cidery’s most popular product is Cliffbreaks blend, a golden English cider with a rich, bittersweet flavor. Meanwhile, the striking red cider reveals strong fruit flavors and a bright crimson color that matches the flesh of its apples.

Visit the tasting room on Fridays and Saturdays, or join Snowdrift’s Cider Club to receive new cider varieties shipped to your door each month.

Twilight Cider Works Mead

Nestled among the farms and forests north of Spokane sits Twilight Cider Works, a cidery that creates hand-crafted beverages using apples from the orchards in Green Bluff.

Twilight produces crisp ciders with balanced flavors that aren’t excessively sweet. The cider offerings range from traditional apple and spiced apple varieties to more botanical blends that feature lavender, hibiscus, and rhubarb. The tasting room is open Saturdays and Sundays. Purchase a cider flight to sample several different flavors. You might just discover a surprising new favorite.

A man pours hard cider into a glass at Tieton Cider Works

Tieton Cider Works Yakima

Located in the heart of Washington cider (and wine) country in Yakima, Tieton’s Cider Bar has a half-dozen flavors on tap, and their cans and bottles can be found at retail outlets around the state. The top seller is Wild Washington Apple Cider, which incorporates multiple bittersweet and bittersharp apples into a perfect semi-dry blend.

Bone dry cider is a crisp beverage that mixes bittersweet and dessert apples, while dry hopped cider takes an acidic apple cider and adds three kinds of hops. Tieton also produces tangy fruit ciders, such as peach, cherry, and huckleberry, all of which incorporate Washington apples into the mix.

Methow Valley Ciderhouse Winthrop

The Methow Valley Ciderhouse is a hidden gem on the eastern edge of the North Cascades in a valley laden with rich soil. It’s now a full-service restaurant with an extensive menu, but the cider remains one of the primary draws for visitors.

Methow Valley Ciderhouse produces six ciders named after the region’s animals. Try Pinnacle Goat, a semi-sweet cider with a robust ginger infusion, or Black Raven, a tart dry cider with a bit of natural blackberry sweetness.

You can sample many of Washington’s hard ciders at annual events like Cider Smash each June in Kirkland or Marcus CiderFest in the fall in Eastern Washington.

Washington Gold Cider Chelan

An old apple packing shed from the 1930s now serves as the cider house tap room for Washington Gold Cider. Operated by the same folks behind Lake Chelan Winery and located just steps from the beautiful lake itself, Washington Gold creates bright-tasting ciders that never use any artificial flavors or colors.

The cider mill’s offerings include a sweet and crisp Golden Delicious cider and an original cider featuring subtle vanilla and floral notes. Also check out the inventive apple pie hard cider, which adds nutmeg, cinnamon, and brown sugar to recreate the comforting flavor of this favorite dessert.

Note: The taproom closes seasonally, so check hours before visiting.

Whether you’re cozying up inside a taproom or joining the family for a farm-fresh cider festival, these Washington State cideries have got you covered.

A Local’s Guide to Planning a Seattle Brewery Tour of Ballard (With a Map!)

Beer tasting in Seattle is easy at the Ballard breweries, which include a bunch of breweries clustered together in walking distance. Consider this area for your next Seattle brewery tour!

If you’re looking to go on a Seattle brewery tour, the Ballard neighborhood is the place to do it. I remember the sudden appearance of all the Ballard breweries: I was living with my sister at the time, and we’d sometimes walk through the neighborhood to downtown Ballard for the farmers market, passing by homes and empty-looking warehouses.

Then, one day, there was a brewery. It was in a sparse warehouse with the garage door thrown open. Since my brother-in-law brews beer, you could imagine our excitement. Especially when another one opened. Then another. And another.

Now there are 16 breweries and 6 taprooms in Ballard. Most of them seem randomly placed on home-lined streets, but it’s the perfect setup for a self-guided Seattle brewery tour (or a “crawl” if you will!) and most of them are family-friendly.

But since there are so many Ballard breweries, it can be daunting to figure out which ones you should go to. And which ones you should go to might change depending on who you’re rolling with.

So here’s a list of all the Ballard breweries, which are my favorites, and insights into what to expect at all of them. I also share a Seattle brewery map to give you a sense of place. Consider this the only guide you need for a fun day of beer tasting at the Ballard breweries.

The Ultimate Seattle Brewery Tour of Ballard

I’ve been to just about all of these Ballard breweries and have favorites, which I labeled below. Most of them create 100% Ballard brewed beers, so it doesn’t get much more local than that!

Also, consider doing tasters. There are so many awesome beers at each stop. I rarely get a full pint…I just continually go back and get samplers!

Obec Brewing

website | cross streets: 11th Ave NW & NW 52nd St | best known for: malty-style beers

Obec brewery mural wall outside this best Seattle brewery in Ballard

Obec (prounounced “Oh-betz”) is the Czech word for “community”. This microbrewery is different than most of the other Ballard breweries because it’s 21+ and pretty posh as far as breweries in a warehouse go. There are dim lights, makeshift couches made out of crates, and a big chandelier.

I go here weekly while my niece is at gymnastics nearby. I really love their selection of beers and moody vibes. They make great beer that even the pickiest beer lovers will enjoy. They also have vinyl nights, where you can bring your own or pick a record from their collection.

Beer to try: If available, try one of their saison, Belgian dubbel, or Belgian strong golden. All are malty, magical goodness with deep complex flavors.

Lucky Envelope Brewing

website | cross streets: 9th Ave NW & NW 50th St | best known for: casual atmosphere and well-executed beers

Lucky Envelope, a Ballard Brewery in Seattle perfect for beer tasting

Lucky Envelope Brewing is a no frills, laid back Ballard microbrewery. It’s one of my favorite of the bunch because I have yet to try a craft beer I don’t like. Sure it doesn’t have the ambiance like some of their neighbors, but what it lacks in decor it makes up for in impeccable beers. And they also have some toys and board games to entertain little ones.

Beer to try: If available, try their Two Pepper Pale Ale. This seasonal beer features habanero and shishito peppers. You can actually taste the pepper and bite from the habanero. I love spicy drinks, so this is right up my alley.

Fair Isle Brewing Co.

website | cross streets: NW 49th St & 11 Ave NW | best known for: farmhouse style beers & hip vibes

woman enjoying Fair Isle Brewing beer

Fair Isle is one of Ballard’s newest craft breweries. It’s hip as hell with a minimal, hipster interior of concrete floors and moody colors, plus a dreamy Instagram feed. I could go to town taking photos in here!

They create farmhouse style beer, using a unique crafting brewing technique that leverages wild yeasts from the Pacific Northwest. This is one of the other Ballard brewery that’s 21+, so it’s not a good fit for your Seattle brewery tour if you have kids in tow.

Urban Family Brewing Co.

website | cross streets: NW 52nd St & 11 Ave NW | best known for: sour beers

Urban Family is the brewery that opened most recently in Ballard, but they actually moved from Magnolia into a huge modern warehouse space across from Stoup. They have a 21+ upstairs, but allow kids. They focus on sours and IPA, particularly ones with interesting fruit bases like boysenberry. If you have a person who is usually a beer hater but open to trying them, this might be the best stop for them on your self-guided Seattle brewery tour.

website | cross streets: 11th Ave NW & NW 52nd St | best known for: IPAs

Stoup Brewing, one of the Ballard breweries in Seattle

Stoup is another brewery that offers a rotating selection of taps and food trucks. Like most of the other breweries, it started in just a small warehouse but has since expanded. They started in a humble warehouse, but since expanded their outdoor patio to include a beer garden with fun ambiance that makes it one of the neighborhood’s most popular spots.

Stoup isn’t my favorite brewery because they’re usually packed and I don’t like IPAs, their bread and butter. However, they are critically-acclaimed for their IPAs, so if your group has IPA beer lovers, head here.

Beer to try: A sampler of their IPAs.

Reuben’s Brews

website | cross streets: 14th Ave NW & NW 51st St | best known for: insane crowds

Reubens Brewing, one of many Ballard breweries perfect for beer tasting in Seattle.

I’d argue Reuben’s is everyone in Seattle’s favorite Ballard brewery. It’s one of the Ballard neighborhood’s most popular spots, so this place gets crowded because most people’s self-guided tour begins at Reuben’s. I recommend trying to go here on off peak days or times if possible.

I’ve never had a beer here I don’t like, but I don’t have a go-to beer and the crowds give me anxiety, so that’s why I don’t include it as one of my favorites. But it’s crowded for good reason. They make really good beer in a bunch of different varieties. They also have some board games, a big screen TV, and a food truck parked outside on the weekends.

Cloudburst Brewing

website | cross streets: NW Market St & Shilshole Ave NW | best known for: interesting IPAs

Cloudburst Brewing is Ballard’s newest craft brewing spots. I haven’t been here yet, but am very excited for this addition. They started downtown near Pike Place Market, an area I’m not around too often. So now that they are closer to me in Ballard, a visit is in order.

The owner used to brew for Elysian Brewing, but spun off to create bright, seasonal IPAs and a few other varietals like porters. This location allows kids up until 6 pm. After hours, it becomes a 21+ only brewery.

Old Stove Brewing

website | cross streets: 17th Ave NW & NW 49th St | best known for: being that awesome brewery in Pike Place

One of the best Pike Place Market restaurants and breweries recently opened up another brewhouse in Ballard. They have a stunning outdoor beer garden lined with string lights and plants that feels like a little oasis in industrial Ballard. You can expect all the same great beers at their Pike Place location, but with a less tourist-filled space.

Bickersons Brewhouse

website | cross streets: 15th Ave NW & Leary Way NW | best known for: a healthy dose of Belgian-style ales

Bickersons brewhouse is a Renton-based brewery that opened a tasting room in the older Peddler Brewing Company location in Ballard. Owners Shaunn and Frank turned a hobby into a full-fledged bewery and have a varied menu of Belgians, porters, IPAs, sours, and more. I haven’t been yet, but am excited to try their Belgians!

Great Notion Brewing

website | cross streets: 14th Ave NW & NW 51st St | best known for: hazy IPAs and sours

Great Notion is the newest addition to the Seattle brewery tour scene. They started in Portland, Oregon and now have a few different locations throughout the Pacific Northwest. There first move to Seattle was to the Georgetown neighborhood, but now they have two tasting rooms after opening their second on in Ballard in 2020.

They describe their beers as “hazy, fruit-forward IPAs and ‘culinary-inspired’ sours & stouts”. Many of their barrel-aged beers use fruits from the Pacific Northwest, such as pinot noir wine grapes or cherries.

Bale Breaker & Yonder Cider Taproom

website | cross streets: 9th Ave NW & NW 49th St | best known for: hoppy beers and ciders

The newest addition to the Ballard Seattle brewery tour scene is a joint venture between a brewery out in Yakima and a local cider company. They took over the old Populuxe space right in the heart of the brewery district. Like Populuxe, it has a large outdoor beer garden area perfect for sipping in the sun.

Yonder Cider opened in their garage in Phinney. They serve excellent, not-to-sweet hard ciders made with Washington apples. Fun fact, owner Caitlin is a friend of a friend who started a female entrepreneur Facebook group. Caitlin asked for feedback on their logo and packaging before launch, so I got a little sneak peak before the public.

Bale Breaker grows hops at its location in Yakima, so you can expect a lot of hoppy IPAs. Since they’re friends with Yonder, they decided to go in on a joint venture to open a new tasting room.

Wheelie Pop Brewing

website | cross streets: 11th Ave NW & NW 50th St | best known for: using PNW and North American malts and hops

Wheelie Pop is one of the newer Seattle breweries in Ballard. It’s owned by Jeremy and Mark, two friends with a love of motorcycles. The name actually comes from what they used to call wheelies when they were kids: “wheel pops”.

They have a variety of beer types on tap at any given time. You’ll find IPAs, pilsners, stouts, and ambers. What makes them unique is that they source their ingredients from as close to home as possible, meaning you may find Italian pilsners made with Pacific Northwest malts.

Distant West Brewing

website | cross streets: 14th Ave NW & NW 53th St | best known for: using PNW and North American malts and hops

Distant West is the newest brewery on the Seattle brewery scene in Ballard. They took over the old Rueben’s space and have a wide variety of beers with a healthy dose of IPAs and pale ales. The brewery was named after owner Greg’s grandfather who wrote about migrating to the great west from Ireland in the 1910s. So obviously Greg wants to honor him with plenty of west coast-style beers.

Maritime Pacific Brewery & Jolly Roger Taproom

web site  |  cross streets:  11th Ave NW & NW Ballard Way |  best known for:  lagers with a pirate vibe

The Jolly Roger Taproom has been open since I’ve lived in Seattle. Opened in 1990, it’s another one of the OG breweries in Seattle and Ballard. It reminds me of one of those sort-of-dive-bars, sort-of-family-pubs that you’d find down the shore on the east coast. There’s a lot of dark wood and a pirate vibe.

Pour Decisions

website  |  cross streets: 15th Ave NW & NW 80th St | best known for: a quiet neighborhood vibe

This spot is in an unassuming spot on busy 15th Ave toward Crown Hill. It’s not within walking distance from the other breweries, but it’s a good spot if you want a quiet place to grab a beer. You’ll find both Crucible Brewing and Sound Bite Cider under one roof, so it’s good for people who have different tastes in beverages.

Pike Taproom

website | cross streets: Ballard Ave NW & NW Vernon Pl | best known for: big production brews

Pike Brewing is probably one of the most recognizable breweries in Seattle thanks to their prime Pike Place Market location. They opened up a downtown Ballard taproom to get some of their famous brews and some guest taps.

More Ballard tap rooms

Here are spots that don’t brew their own beer, but that serve a bunch of local beers on tap.

Trailbend Taproom

website | cross streets: 11th Ave NW & NW 50th St | best known for: being the most restaurant-like place of the bunch

Trailbend Taproom, one of the beer tasting options in Ballard, Seattle

Trailbend isn’t a brewery, but a taproom that offers a selection of more than 40 beers on draft. More than half of them are local to Washington or Oregon, but there are also a few international pours.

If you think your group would appreciate more posh ambiance and restaurant-like food, come here. There are large tables big enough for large groups and they have a pretty extensive, Italian-leaning menu. If you plan to eat here, get the meatball sandwich or meatball appetizer.

Beer to try: Any of the local craft beers not in the Ballard area, such as Holy Mountain or Cloudburst if on tap

Ballard Beer Company

website | cross streets: NW Market St & Leary Way NW | best known for: A 21+ taproom that’s also a great place to work

Ballard Beer Company, a Ballard brewery in Seattle perfect for beer tasting

Ballard Beer Company is not a brewery, but a 17-tap taproom that offers mostly Ballard beers (and some from all over Washington). They also offer a pretty extension collection of beer bottles for purchase.

It’s located right on the main strip of downtown Ballard, so further away from the other breweries but closer to all the restaurants, bars, and shops in Ballard.

The best part? They’re open during the workday and have wifi, which means it’s a great alternative to a coffee shop if you’re looking for a place to work. There are quite a lot of long high-top tables, so it’s also good for a group.

Skål Beer Hall

website | cross streets: NW Market St & Ballard Ave NW | best known for: serious Viking vibes

Skål is one of the newest additions to the Seattle beer scene. It’s not a brewery, but a viking-inspired beer hall in downtown Ballard known for its food and quirky events for Nordic enthusiasts. If you love exploring Seattle craft beer bars , you’ll like this spot.

Ballard Beer Box

website  |  cross streets: NW Market St & 26th Ave NW | best known for: unique beers and pizza

Ballard Beer Box is one of the newer bottle shops among the Ballard beer scene. They have a show-stopping wall with tropical wallpaper and plenty of seating both inside and in the large back patio. You’ll find a great selection of beers on tap or in cases that you can enjoy onsite with a nominal corkage fee. They have some of my favorites like Garden Path Fermentation out of Skagit and Crux and Ale Apothecary out of Bend.

The other best thing about this spot is that they make excellent pizza. They ferment the dough themselves for 3 days and create 12″ pies in a small oven. You’ll find classics, but don’t miss their funky topping options.

Outpouring Bottle Shop

website  |  cross streets: 24th Ave NW & NW 65th St | best known for: curated list of beer, wine, and cider

This intimate bottle shop is a hidden gem a bit north of downtown Ballard. It’s a dimly-lit, small space with a ton of plants and a few tables. You can grab wine, cider, or beer to go, or grab a glass on tap. They do a great job selecting brews, so given its hidden-gem factor this is a must stop among your Ballard Seattle brewery tour.

Seattle brewery tour itineraries

Here is how I’d spend the ultimate day beer tasting on a Seattle brewery tour, depending if my nieces are in tow are not. Reference my Seattle brewery map below to see how far each of these breweries are from each other.

Family-friendly tour of Seattle breweries

  • Start at Rueben’s for a lot of space and games.
  • Head to Urban Family Brewing for crowds to drown out rowdy children.
  • End at Yonder Cider & Bale Breaker Brewing  with plenty of outdoor space for the kids to run around.

Adult Seattle brewery tour

  • Start at the 21+ Obec Brewing for mellow vibes and conversation.
  • Saunter over to 21+ Fair Isle Brewing and grab a bite from one of the awesome popups they usually host
  • Head to Lucky Envelope to try different beers in a brighter, but still low-key atmosphere. Note they allow kids, but there’s not as much space.

Ballard, Seattle brewery map

The majority of the Ballard breweries take up about a 6-by-12 block area in the residential area of Ballard. There are currently 16 breweries and 6 taprooms. Here they are all laid on a Seattle brewery map.

Transportation for your Seattle brewery tour of Ballard

There’s plenty of street parking if you want to drive and walk between the Ballard breweries, but if you plan on boozing for the day I recommend alternative options like ride sharing or the bus. The bus lines that stop nearby are the 44, 28X, D, 40, and 15X. You could bring a bike and ride between the breweries, but again, be safe friends.

You might have also seen the comical Cycle Saloon around Ballard. It’s a 15-person covered wagon that people pedal like a bike to move. They offer Seattle brewery tours of the Ballard breweries, which I did with my sister and her friends.

If you’re wondering, I don’t think it’s worth it. It’s quite expensive for a short amount of time and it doesn’t include any beer in the price. Plus you can’t bring beer on the vehicle (which was a disappointing surprise). So while it’s funny and a quirky way to explore the area, I’d say only do it if you can get on one for free.

Once you’re at the Ballard breweries, you can easily walk between them to do your own Seattle brewery tour. There’s a cluster of them between between NW 52nd St & 49th St, so if some people in your group can’t handle walking between the mile range to visit all the Ballard breweries in this guide, stay in that area. Reference my Seattle brewery map above for guidance!

BONUS: Tasting with a beer hater?

I’ll be honest, I don’t understand these people. But if you have beer haters in your crew, or maybe you just want to change it up, there are some options for places to stop during your Seattle brewery tour.

Besides the many bars and cocktail bars in downtown Ballard, there’s also Domanico Cellars and Wildwood Spirits .

We hosted my sister’s (Jersey Shore-themed) 40th birthday party at Domanico, which is in walking distance of most of the Ballard breweries. They have really good red wines in an unassuming warehouse with strings of white lights. I haven’t been to Locust Cider Taproom yet, but it’s a new cider place that opened in downtown Ballard. Plus a lot of the breweries will have guest taps, oftentimes featuring cider alongside beers.

Basically, you can rest assured there is something for everyone at the Ballard breweries. I’ll continue to update this guide as new places open or close. What are your favorites? Did I happen to miss any? Let me know in the comments!
