  • If you have a Citi credit card that earns ThankYou points, you can book your travel with them.
  • The Citi Travel Portal is like an online travel agency, allowing you to make bookings with ease.
  • You can pay with points (worth 1 cent each), your Citi credit card, or a combination of both.

Citi ThankYou Rewards is a flexible points program that allows you to earn points from eligible Citi credit cards and banking products. You can redeem points in a number of ways, including for travel, cash back, or gift cards.

One of the best ways to use points is for travel, either by transferring Citi ThankYou points to airline partners for award flights (only available with certain Citi credit cards), or through an even easier option available to all program members — the Citi Travel portal.

Citi Travel recently got a big overhaul, and it's now partnered with Booking.com and powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda technology. Here's what to know about the new Citi Travel portal and what to expect if you decide to book.

Overview of the Portal

The Citi Travel Portal is an online travel booking platform that works in a similar way to Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Orbitz or Expedia. You can search for flights, hotels, rental cars, and attractions based on your destination, travel dates, and other preferences, and you have the option to pay with Citi ThankYou points, your Citi card, or a combination of both.

Benefits of Booking Through the Portal

Although Citi Travel doesn't get as much attention as American Express Travel or the Chase Ultimate Rewards® Travel Portal , it has many of the same benefits:

  • You can book travel with no blackout dates
  • There's no need to worry about loyalty program award charts or availability
  • Your points are worth a flat 1 cent each toward travel, and you can combine them with cash if you don't have enough for a booking
  • You'll still earn airline miles and elite-qualifying miles when you book flights, even when you pay entirely with points
  • It's possible to pool Citi points from different credit cards (or even share with friends and family who have Citi ThankYou accounts)

A downside to using the Citi Travel Portal is you won't earn points or elite status credit for hotel stays, and you might not have your elite status recognized because it's considered a third-party booking.

If you're looking for the easiest way to cash in Citi points for travel, the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal is a better choice for most people. That said, it's possible to get more than 1 cent per point in value if you skip the Citi Portal and instead transfer your points at a 1:1 ratio to an airline or hotel partner for award travel — but that involves more legwork.

The full range of partners is available if you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants). Otherwise, JetBlue, Choice, and Wyndham are the only airline and hotel options, with a reduced transfer ratio.

How to Log In

To access the Citi Travel Portal, you must be a Citi customer with a ThankYou rewards account. Once you sign in to your Citi account online and click the "View/Redeem" button in the rewards section, you'll land on a screen with several redemption options. Click "Book Travel" in the lower left-hand corner.

Alternatively, you can get to the same screen by signing in with your Citi login details at ThankYou.com .

Once you click "Book Travel," you'll be prompted to select the Citi card account you want to book with if you have multiple Citi cards. Then you'll land on the main Citi Travel search screen.

How to Book Flights with Citi Travel

To search for flights, click the "Flights" tab and enter your departure and destination airport and dates of travel. You'll also have options to select round-trip or one-way flights, class of service, number of passengers, and if you prefer non-stop flights. Then hit "Search."

Next, you'll see a list of flight search results — starting with your outbound flight — which you can sort by price, number of stops, departure time, arrival time, duration, or "best overall" (cheap, short flights). On the left sidebar, there are also filters for the departure and arrival times, airline, number of stops, price range, and total journey duration. To choose a flight, click on the "Select" button, then repeat the process for your return leg if you've searched for a round-trip itinerary.

Once you've selected your flights, you'll be prompted to enter passenger details and will be given options to upgrade your fare (most folks will skip this step). Then, on the final booking screen, you'll have the opportunity to select your payment method — either using your Citi card, ThankYou points, or a combination of both.

How to Book Hotels with Citi Travel

The process of finding a hotel to book through the Citi Travel portal is similar to searching for flights. After selecting the "Hotels" option from the main menu, enter your destination, stay dates, and the number of guests in the search fields.

The results page allows you to sort by property class, price, distance, hotel name, and recommended results. You can filter by price, class, TripAdvisor rating, amenities, nearby landmarks, and even hotels offering deals. One useful feature is the ability to quickly identify properties that have discounted rates by looking for the "Sale" flag in the corner of the hotel listing.

To find out more about the hotel you're interested in, click on the hotel name and you'll be shown different bed options, rate types with cancellation policies, and available packages (breakfast included, for instance) if applicable. Select "Check out" next to the room you want to book. You'll then be asked for guest details (name, address, phone number, and email).

Once you've entered your information, you'll come to the final booking screen where, again, you can choose your method of payment.

How to Rent a Car with Citi Travel

Searching for a car rental through Citi Travel is similarly easy. Once you've clicked "Cars" on the main menu, enter your pick-up location (you can select a different drop-off location if needed), rental dates and times, and the driver's age.

The results list allows you to sort by price, rental company, or car type.

Once you find a car you like, click on its listing to learn more about the rental and enter the driver's name and details.

On the final booking screen, you'll choose your method of payment — again, your Citi card, ThankYou points, or a combination of both.

How to Book Attractions Through Citi Travel

Select the "Attractions" tab on the main search page, and enter the city name where you want to search.

Depending on the destination, you'll get a list of all kinds of activities — from tours and sightseeing tickets to airport transfers and excursions.

When you click on the attraction, you'll get more details about what's included in the activity.

Click "See options" to choose your activity dates, times, and the number of participants.

Once you select "Choose" you'll have the opportunity to enter your traveler details. Then, you'll be brought to the final booking screen where you can select your payment method.

Before you choose between booking through the Citi Portal or transferring points to a partner for an award flight, be sure to compare the number of points required in each case — and verify that an award flight is actually available before you decide on that route.

  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Citi ThankYou Rewards may not be as convenient as other points for US-based travelers

If you're looking for an all-purpose travel credit card with strong rewards, many ways to use your points, and an annual fee under $100, the Citi Premier should be on your shortlist. Beyond the welcome bonus offer, the Citi Premier® Card offers great 3x earning categories that just about anyone can take advantage of — and the rewards it earns are incredibly flexible.

Citi offers several different cards that earn Citi ThankYou points:

  • Citi Premier® Card: Earn 60,000 bonus ThankYou® points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening
  • Citi Custom Cash℠ Card : Earn $200 cash back, fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first six months of account opening
  • Citi® Double Cash Card
  • Citi Rewards+® Card : Earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,500 in the first three months of account opening
  • Citi Prestige® Card: No longer available to new applicants

If you have the Citi Premier® Card, there's an additional incentive to book through the Citi ThankYou portal. Once per calendar year, cardholders can get $100 off a hotel stay of $500 or more (before taxes and fees) when they book through the Citi portal — whether the stay is booked with points, charged to the Citi Premier® Card, or a combination of both.

The Citi Travel Portal is a terrific tool if you're looking for a way to redeem points for flights, hotels, car rentals, and attractions without worrying about blackout dates or fussing with loyalty program award charts. You'll even earn frequent flyer miles and elite credits for flight bookings (but you won't earn hotel points or elite nights on hotel stays, because it's a third-party booking).

Anyone with an eligible Citi ThankYou credit card can redeem their points through the portal at a rate of 1 cent each. Or, if you don't have enough points to cover the entire booking, you can pay with your Citi card in combination with rewards to make up the difference.

Even though using the Citi Travel Portal is easy and convenient, it is usually possible to get more value from your Citi ThankYou points by transferring them to Citi's airline and hotel partners. This method requires jumping through more hoops and searching for award availability, so if you'd rather avoid that inconvenience, the Citi Travel Portal is an ideal booking method.

Citi cardholders can access the travel portal by logging into their online account and navigating to the travel section or directly through the Citi Travel website.

Yes, you can use your Citi points to book flights, hotels, car rentals, and more through the portal. Points can cover all or part of the booking cost.

Typically, bookings made through the portal using your Citi card will earn points according to your card's rewards program.

The portal does not usually charge additional booking fees, but it's always best to review the terms and conditions for any specific charges that may apply.

Yes, you can cancel or modify bookings, but the ability to do so without penalty depends on the specific terms of your booking. Always check the cancellation policy at the time of booking.

TPG exclusive: Revamped Citi travel portal launched

Ryan Smith

Citi is a TPG advertising partner. Editor's note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information. The portal is live, and our full guide is here .

After months of delays, TPG can reveal that the new Citi travel portal will finally launch Sunday in the afternoon. From what Citi has told us, the new portal's features sound awesome. However, whether the portal will be a game-changer in practice is yet to be seen.

We first noticed issues with the current Citi ThankYou Travel Center in July 2022. Citi launched a "coming soon" page for its new portal in August after TPG was the first to report on the planned launch of a new portal. In response to delays, Citi provided band-aids to enable customers to book travel in its portal for travel dates through June 2023 — not ideal for those planning future trips.

However, the wait is almost over — Citi Travel with Booking.com will launch Sunday, March 19.

Here's a closer look at the new Citi travel portal, which features you can expect at launch and which additional features will be coming in the future.

Overview of the new Citi travel portal

Citi's existing travel portal — the Citi ThankYou Travel Center — is disappearing, and it will be replaced with a new travel portal.

The new Citi Travel portal is powered by Booking.com and will provide access to over 1.4 million hotels worldwide, thanks to the Booking.com platform. The new portal will be called Citi Travel with Booking.com, and you will be able to access it through this link .

citibank travel deals 2023

Citi promises that the new platform will be easier to use and will be accessible through Citi's website (starting Sunday afternoon) and Citi's mobile app (after app updates, which are expected by the end of this month). Cardmembers can customize their payments, choosing which credit card(s) or points to pay with — or a combination of the two.

Another new aspect is 24-hour customer support. Cardmembers will be able to receive help with their bookings around the clock.

You'll earn points on all paid bookings through Citi Travel. You'll also be able to redeem your ThankYou Rewards points at a rate of 1 cent per point toward travel booked in the portal. This means a $150 flight will cost 15,000 Citi ThankYou points.

From what we've seen, the new portal feels very similar to Booking.com and other travel portals. You can search by destination (for hotels, rental cars and activities), by property name (for hotels) or by route (for flights).

Key features of Citi Travel with Booking.com

Citi's new portal will be integrated with your online Citi account and with the mobile app for the first time, making it easier to book travel without needing additional logins. Additionally, your points balance will be visible to help you see which travel purchases align with the spending power of your points.

You will be able to redeem points for all or part of your reservation. Redemption rates in the portal will be 1 cent per point. This is below TPG's valuation of ThankYou points at 1.8 cents apiece, but it provides options for using points in additional ways — such as tours and activities (more on that below).

As Booking.com powers the new portal, all hotels you see on Booking.com should be available through the portal. This includes not just chain hotels and resorts but also boutique properties, bed-and-breakfasts and Disney properties, including the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel and Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel. However, most hostels won't be bookable.

Highlight: Attractions available in the Citi travel portal

Citi's new travel portal offers access to more than just hotels, flights and rental cars. Hundreds of thousands of attractions will be available in all 50 U.S. states and in countries around the globe. This includes Universal theme parks (including multiday tickets and passes) but not tickets to Six Flags or Disney parks — though some Disney hotels can be booked in the new portal.

Additional offerings include river cruises, guided hikes in the Grand Canyon and entrance tickets to popular tourist attractions, like the Kennedy Space Center. To find and book attractions, search by your destination (e.g., New York City or Paris).

You'll be able to pay for all of these with points.

Launch of 2 new Citi hotel programs

Citi is also launching two new hotel programs: Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection. These programs are launching Sunday with the new travel portal, but they will start with a limited footprint of properties (the same thing happened with the recently-launched Capital One Premier Collection ). Initially, hotels will be available in the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean, then the number of hotels available will expand on a rolling basis.

For those familiar with other credit card issuer hotel programs , these two new hotel programs will sound familiar.

Related: A comparison of luxury hotel programs from credit card issuers: Amex, Chase and Capital One

Citi's Hotel Collection will offer free breakfast for two people daily and complimentary Wi-Fi as guaranteed perks. When available, you'll also get early check-in and late checkout privileges.

Citi's Luxury Collection — the more premium program of the two — will offer those benefits plus room upgrades (when available) and a $100 on-property credit. Uses of this benefit will vary by location, and it may cover purchases like spa services, meals at the hotel's restaurant and overnight parking.

There are no minimum stay requirements for these bookings (unlike American Express' The Hotel Collection , which has a minimum two-night stay when booking with The Platinum Card® from American Express ). Anyone with a credit card that earns ThankYou points can make reservations through the Hotel Collection. However, only those with the Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants) or the Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ) can access the Luxury Collection.

The information for the Citi Prestige has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Unfortunately, there is no option for adding your hotel loyalty program number to these reservations. However, as explained below, you can stack a valuable Citi-provided benefit on top of these reservations.

No changes to Prestige and Premier card portal benefits

The Citi Prestige Card and the Citi Premier Card both offer valuable hotel credits. Using these benefits requires booking your room through Citi's travel portal. The good news is that these benefits are not changing.

Citi Premier cardholders will continue to receive a once-per-year $100 credit for hotel bookings of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, through Citi Travel.

Those who have the Citi Prestige will still enjoy their fourth-night-free perk. This benefit is available twice yearly and offers a fourth night free on hotel bookings made in Citi's travel portal.

Thus, you can use these benefits on hotel reservations with the Hotel Collection or Luxury Collection to stack the hotel programs' benefits with your cardholder benefits. We will do a deeper dive on how to maximize these benefits in a guide coming soon.

Bonus points promotion

To coincide with the launch of Citi Travel with Booking.com, select Citi cardholders will be able to earn up to 10 points per dollar on bookings in the portal through June 30, 2024. Depending on your card, you'll earn:

  • 10 points per dollar on bookings for hotels, rental cars and eligible attractions with the Citi Prestige Card (no longer open to new applicants) and the Citi Premier Card .

Additionally, select Citi cardholders will be able to earn up to 5 points per dollar on bookings in the portal through December 31, 2025. You'll earn:

  • 5 points per dollar on these bookings with the Citi Rewards+® Card (see rates and fees ).

Once these limited-time earning rates end, a Citi spokesperson promised updates on the standard earning rates for travel booked in the portal.

The information for the Citi ThankYou Preferred card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Unfortunately, flights are not included in the bonus-earning rates.

Bottom line

Citi's new travel portal is powered by Booking.com and is launching Sunday. It includes several valuable benefits and additions, plus bonus points-earning opportunities. The launch also includes two new hotel programs: Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection. We're excited to do a deeper dive after the portal goes live.

Hopefully, Citi Travel with Booking.com will work as expected. And this concern has been the main reason for delays, according to a Citi spokesperson: "We are committed to everything being seamless at launch, so we have pushed back the launch date to make sure it's working correctly on day one."

For those who've been waiting, set your alarm. You'll be able to start using Citi Travel with Booking.com Sunday afternoon.

20 Years Helping You Live Richer

Trusted by Millions of Readers

Citi ® has a name for offering travel-related services, particularly in the credit card arena. While some of its travel credit cards are directly affiliated with American Airlines, others offer a wide range of travel benefits, from enhanced points earning capability to cash back .

Given the broad assortment of cards available, it pays to take the time to filter through and decide which is the best Citi travel credit card for you. Here’s an overview of the features and benefits of the top five Citi travel card options.

Top 5 Citi Travel Cards

Best for: Overall travel rewards

The best card to maximize overall travel rewards within the Citi family is the Citi Premier card . For starters, new cardholders can earn a big sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after spending $4,000 on the card in the first three months after opening an account. This provides the equivalent of $600 in gift cards right off the bat. The bonus points can also be redeemed for travel rewards.

However, the true value of the card is in the accruals for daily spending. The Citi Premier card offers triple points in not just one but a number of popular spending categories, from supermarkets and restaurants to gas stations, air travel and hotels. This alone makes it a contender for one of the most valuable Citi travel cards, as it rewards not just travel costs but also general, everyday spending .

Although the card has no foreign transaction fees, it does have an annual fee of .

Best for: High spending in one category

If you’re looking to earn the maximum points in the areas in which you spend the most, the Citi Custom Cash card could be just the ticket. Rather than simply providing a flat cash-back rate or offering quarterly bonus categories, this card actually pays you its maximum cash-back rate of 5% on your highest-spending category, up to $500 in purchases each billing cycle.

For example, if you spend $500 on groceries in one month and $400 on travel, you’ll earn 5% cash back on that $500 grocery spend. If in the following month you spend $500 on travel and only $400 on groceries, you’ll instead earn 5% cash back on your $500 travel spend.

This type of cash-back structure ensures that you’ll earn the most cash back you can every single month without having to worry about where you are allocating your spending. The only caveat is that your cash back is limited to the first $500 you spend in your top category every month. However, for a card with no annual fee , this is still a generous cash-back rate.

The Citi Custom Cash card also comes with some other perks, including a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on both purchases and balance transfers — followed by rates of 18.24% – 28.24% APR — although there is a 5% balance transfer fee. There’s also a 3% foreign transaction fee.

However, you’ll earn $200 cash back after spending just $1,500 in the first six months of card ownership.

Best for: ThankYou Rewards points

If collecting your benefits in the form of ThankYou Rewards points is your style, you might be well suited for the Citi Rewards+ card .

This card doesn’t have an annual fee but still provides 2x ThankYou Rewards points at gas stations and supermarkets for the first $6,000 per year. All other purchases net one point per dollar spent. Plus, for a limited time, earn 5 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on hotel, car rentals, and attractions (excluding air travel) booked on the Citi Travel℠ Portal through June 30, 2024.

A 20,000-point sign-up bonus is available to new cardholders who spend $1,500 in the first three months of card ownership. Cardholders are also granted a 10% bonus on up to the first 100,000 ThankYou Rewards points they redeem per year.

This card does have a 3% foreign transaction fee. However, for the first 15 months after you open the account, you can also avail of a 0% APR on both purchases and balance transfers, after which the rates are APR.

Best for: Regular travelers

Fans of American Airlines who don’t spend their whole lives traveling may enjoy the perks of the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. Some of the card’s most valuable perks include priority boarding and a free checked bag , not just for yourself but also for up to four travel companions on domestic itineraries.

When compared with the card’s modest $99 annual fee, the baggage perk alone typically makes the card worthwhile, as even a couple checking one bag each on a domestic round-trip itinerary would face $120 in fees. The annual fee is waived for the first year, plus the card has no foreign transaction fees .

On top of offering 2x miles on eligible American Airlines purchases and at restaurants and gas stations, the card also offers a lucrative bonus of 50,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,500 in the first three months after opening an account. And after spending $20,000 with the card in one year, you can earn a $125 American Airlines flight discount.

Best for: No annual fee

Those looking for a simple, no-annual-fee credit card that still offers travel perks may gravitate toward the American Airlines AAdvantage Mileup card.

The card’s 10,000-mile sign-up bonus is modest, but it requires just $500 in spending in the first three months after account opening to earn it. Those meeting the minimum spend requirement will also earn a $50 statement credit.

Beyond that, the main perk of the card is the 2x miles it pays on grocery purchases and eligible American Airlines purchases. Cardholders also earn a 25% discount on in-flight food and beverages on American Airlines flights. This travel card does carry a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Which Citi Travel Card Is Right for You?

One way to find the right Citi travel card for you is to consider which reward structure will benefit you the most. Are you strictly interested in earning miles or would you prefer the flexibility of earning other types of rewards?

Also consider any fees involved. If the card has an annual fee, will the benefits and perks it offers allow you to offset the fee each year? And if the card has a foreign transaction fee, is it feasible for the amount of international travel you plan to do?

By considering the rewards, benefits and fees of each Citi travel card, you can better determine which one will work best with your lifestyle.

  • Citi offers several travel credit cards with different perks and benefits, such as 0% introductory APR, no foreign transaction fees, a generous welcome bonus and a $100 annual hotel savings benefit.
  • Citi offers several credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, such as the Costco Anywhere Visa card by Citi, Citi Premier card and Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard.
  • The Citi Secured Mastercard is likely the easiest Citi card to get because it is for people with little to no credit and requires a security deposit.
  • Citi cards allow you to earn ThankYou Points that you can redeem for travel.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The holiday travel season is already here, and whether you’re going home or getting away from it all , these are some of the best points and miles deals for travel to take advantage of this fall. With access to these offers, you could wind up with some extra room in your budget for those holiday gifts .

Shift points between accounts to benefit you

Members of Leaders Club, the loyalty program for The Leading Hotels of the World, have a new way to earn points now that it has partnered with Citi ThankYou points. With more than 400 world-famous hotels like The Ritz Paris , Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome , and Acqualina Resort and Residences in Miami, adding points to your account could help save cash on your next trip. Points will transfer at a five-to-one ratio. This means you can exchange 1,000 Citi points for 200 Leaders Club points. (Redemptions start at around 4,000 points and are tied to the cash cost of a stay.)

You can check your balance and book your favorite hotels using Leaders Club’s newly launched mobile app. If you’re not yet a member, you can earn 500 bonus points by signing up and completing your profile ; the bonus arrives via email once you sign up. Another new feature: You can also transfer points to another account or gift points—just in time for the holidays .

Looking for more Flying Blue miles? You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air France-KLM Flying Blue any time in November and receive a 25% bonus. Just log into your Chase account to swap points for miles. (Hot tip: Read below for a solid redemption deal.)

Score these top November travel deals

Air France-KLM has quietly lowered the cost of its one-way business class awards between North America and Europe. If you’re lucky enough to find one of the saver flight deals on its website, you could be traveling in the pointy end of the plane for a cool 50,000 Flying Blue miles each way. That’s one of the best deals out there; some airlines can charge almost twice that amount.

Act quickly to take advantage of the remaining days of the Delta -Instacart partnership, which is ending on November 10. Until the time comes when they part ways, you can continue to earn one SkyMile for each dollar you spend with the food delivery service.

If you’re giving tickets to concerts, sporting events, or theater shows as a holiday present, there’s great news: A new partnership between American Airlines and Ticketmaster will reward you with one mile for each dollar you spend, as well as one American AAdvantage Loyalty Point that helps to qualify for elite status with the airline. Delta has its own version that offers one SkyMile per dollar spent through the entertainment ticket platform.

American has a new “instant status match” program designed to earn new business from Delta and United top elite travelers. Provide details of your existing elite status with either carrier, and American will match it for four months and continue to extend it if you meet certain travel thresholds.

Rack up bonus points galore

British Airways and the Avios program have a new promotion that could literally double your path to free travel . Between now and November 21 (for flight reservations through January 14, 2024), members can receive double Avios points on their next ten trips after registering. Keep in mind that you won’t earn double points on flights booked before you register for the promo.

If you prefer a private residence or villa for your vacation plans, Marriott Bonvoy is offering double elite qualifying nights for elite status and 10% off on reservations made between now and December 24 for completed stays by the end of the year. The stay must be for at least two nights to benefit from the bonus.

American Airlines and Qatar Airways have a promotion this fall where you can earn a significant bonus by adding your AAdvantage account number to American or Qatar Airways flights between the US and Doha. Travelers in business class can earn 15,000 bonus miles for each American or Qatar Airways flight between the U.S. and Doha between now and November 17 ( premium economy passengers on American flights only earn 5,000 miles in each direction). The promotion is targeted but is available for eligible members in the American Airlines mobile app or online. You can earn as many as 90,000 miles.

World of Hyatt is out with its fall promotion called Bonus Journeys, offering 3,000 bonus points for every three nights you stay (up to 21,000 points in total). If you have the World of Hyatt Credit Card , you will earn an additional 1,000 points at a subset of participating hotels. Be sure to register by November 10 and stay by the end of November to earn the bonus at popular properties like the Park Hyatt Sydney or the Hyatt Centric Gran Via Madrid .

Bask in these bank and credit card perks

The Preferred Rewards program from Bank of America is on the heels of adding nine new partners to its benefits list. The no-fee program has different elite tiers based on member balances across various accounts like savings, investments, and credit cards. New for Diamond and Diamond Honors members this season: an instant suite upgrade, $200 resort credit, and free spa service at any Canyon Ranch property. If they book before the end of the year, they will receive a $500 bonus resort credit to use by next summer. Other program goodies for members that can make holiday travel easier are discounts on CLEAR membership and up to a 75% points or cash back bonus on credit card spending.

Amex Offers—bonus promotions that you can add to your account within your online profile—is back with some cash-back offers for the holidays. Use your eligible American Express card and spend at least $750 at one of Hilton Honors’ properties in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America, and you will receive $150 back in your account between now and February 15, 2024. Log into your online account to activate this offer.

American Airlines credit cardholders have another promotion in their online account, but you will want to act fast. By November 6, register to earn one additional AAdvantage mile (as well as one Loyalty Point, which counts towards elite status) for each dollar spent on American flights in November.

Citi Double Cash card members are in for some extra cash back when making holiday travel plans. When booking hotels, car rentals, and attractions through the Citi Travel portal, they will receive 5% cash back (up from the normal 2%) between now and December 31, 2024. That’s over a year of double cash back perks that arrived just in time for the holidays.

Who can use the Citi ThankYou travel portal?

The baseline value of citi thankyou points, how to book travel in the citi thankyou rewards travel portal, benefits of booking in the citi thankyou travel portal, what else you need to know about citi travel portal, how good is the citi travel portal.

Citi has rolled out big changes to its online travel portal that will have a sizable impact on how its credit cardholders search and book travel — whether they’re paying for a trip or redeeming points.

In March 2023, Citi launched its revamped booking platform, officially called Citi Travel with Booking.com. Certain cardholders can book everything from flights and hotels to rental cars and experiences through the portal.

The booking website now offers some 1.4 million hotel options worldwide, including a growing list of properties in Citi’s two new hotel portfolios: the Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection. Bookings in these collections come with special perks such as property credit, free breakfast and more.

The changes give members more options to use Citi ThankYou points. In addition to redeeming ThankYou points for travel, members can also redeem points for cash back or transfer them to airline or hotel partners. In fact, members sometimes extract a higher value from their points by transferring them.

However, applying them toward travel in the Citi’s online travel portal can be a compelling option, particularly given some of the perks available at the platform’s two hotel collections and the current promotion: Now through Dec. 31, 2025, Citi Rewards+® Card cardholders can earn a total of 5x ThankYou Points on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked on CitiTravel.com through Dec. 31, 2025.

In this guide, we’ll go over which cards that members can use the Citi ThankYou travel portal, what the points are worth and when redeeming points through the Citi Travel portal can make sense.

Most cards that earn Citi ThankYou Points offer members access to the Citi Travel portal, including:

AT&T Access Card from Citi (not open to new applications).

AT&T Access More Card from Citi (not open to new applications).

Citi Custom Cash® Card .

Citi Premier® Card .

Citi Prestige® Card (not open to new applications).

Citi Rewards+® Card .

Citi Double Cash® Card .

The portal offers cardholders perks like same-day booking opportunities, a 24-hour cancellation window for full refunds and flexible payment options.

Cardholders can redeem Citi ThankYou points between 1 cent to 1.25 cents through the Citi Travel portal or when redeemed for cash back. So, 1 cent per point should be your baseline redemption rate when deciding whether you should transfer points to one of Citi's airline or hotel partners .

If the booking you are considering gives you less than a 1-cent-per-point redemption rate, consider getting cash back instead. Then, pay for that same booking in cash. This may be more optimal than redeeming your ThankYou points at a lower rate.

1. Log into your Citi account

One of the benefits of Citi’s new travel portal is that you can book a trip and manage your credit card account with just a single login. Eligible ThankYou members can access the new travel portal directly .

You can redeem Citi ThankYou Points at a rate of 1 cent to 1.25 cents toward the following travel purchases: flights, hotel rooms, car rentals and activities. The Citi Travel portal is powered by Booking.com and Rocket Travel by Agoda, and works like the online travel agencies you’ve likely used before.

2. Search your travel dates and destinations

Let’s say you want to book a flight. Select the “Flights” tab and begin your search. Select your trip type (round trip, one way or multicity), and enter the number of passengers and preferred class of service. Input your departure and destination cities and travel dates. Check the nonstop box if necessary and select “Search.”

Review your flight options on the following page. To further filter the search results, you can sort by price, travel duration, as well as departure and arrival time. You can also filter results by the number of stops and operating airlines.

3. Choose to pay with cash, points or a combination of both

Once you select the fare, you’ll have the option to select a payment method: using ThankYou Points or a Citi credit card. If you choose to redeem points, you can either pay in full or redeem for a partial payment.

Here’s an example of a flight booking through the portal: a flight from Salt Lake City to Denver aboard Delta Air Lines. You can see, it’s available for $113.90 or 11,390 ThankYou points — a 1 cent-per-point rate.

citibank travel deals 2023

You can also type in the number of points you want to apply toward the cost of the flight, select “Apply” and pay attention to the payment summary. If the points cover only part of the fare, use your credit card to pay the remaining amount. Then, enter passenger information and complete your booking.

Follow the same process online to make reservations for hotel rooms, car rentals and activities.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards you might not have

Historically, transferring ThankYou points to one of Citi’s partners, like airlines or hotel loyalty programs, sometimes results in a higher value for your rewards (in that they are likely to be worth more than 1 cent apiece). In a recent NerdWallet analysis , we value Citi ThankYou points between 1 cent to 1.3 cents per point. However, there are a few reasons you might consider booking travel through the ThankYou Travel portal instead.

Book flights on the dates you want

Let’s get real for a moment: Award travel is great when everything goes according to plan. But what if you want to travel on specific dates and can’t find available seats using miles with a specific airline? In that case, you have to be flexible and pick less convenient travel dates or times.

You can reserve any open seat on a plane by booking your flight through the Citi ThankYou Rewards travel portal because there are no blackout dates.

You might use slightly more points at a fixed redemption rate of 1 cent to 1.25 cents per point, but at least you can fly on your preferred dates. This option works best with inexpensive economy flights.

Book non-chain hotels with points

When you participate in hotel loyalty programs , you end up staying at chains. But what if you want to book that bewitching beachfront bed-and-breakfast and still take advantage of credit card rewards? Well, the good news is if it shows up in the portal search results, you can redeem points to reserve it.

In the Citi Travel portal, hotel reward bookings aren’t limited to chain hotels, which means you can book all kinds of properties outside of popular brands. This benefit is all the more noteworthy now that Citi has bolstered its property offerings through its Booking.com partnership.

Keep money in your pocket

If you’ve amassed a large collection of Citi ThankYou points, you might have more points than you know what to do with. And now that you’re ready to book a trip, you want to make use of your points instead of spending cash — essentially avoiding paying out of pocket for the same expense.

Though you’ll get a redemption rate of 1 cent to 1.25 cents per point, your trip will be paid for entirely with points. This can be a smart money move for the right situation.

Citi Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection

Perhaps the most significant change unveiled as part of the revamped Citi Travel with Booking.com portal is the addition of two hotel portfolios, at which eligible cardholders can enjoy added perks, not to mention, savings in some cases.

Citi is in the process of rolling out its new Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection — both bookable through its new platform. This may sound like a familiar concept. It’s similar to what other major credit card companies have offered through their travel portals, such as American Express Travel’s Hotel Collection and Fine Hotels and Resorts.

Citi’s Hotel Collection is available to all eligible ThankYou credit cardmembers. Guests who book one of these properties will enjoy a host of perks, including free breakfast for two, complimentary Wi-Fi and early check-in and late checkout (when available).

Here’s one property in San Francisco — the Argonaut Hotel, not far from Fisherman’s Wharf — available as part of the Hotel Collection. As you can see, the listing explicitly mentions late checkout and free premium Wi-Fi as a perk for this booking.

citibank travel deals 2023

Meanwhile, the higher-end Luxury Collection portfolio is available only for ThankYou members who carry the Citi Prestige® Card or Citi Premier® Card . On top of the same perks offered as part of the Hotel Collection, eligible members who book one of these properties will also enjoy room upgrades (when available) and a $100 experience credit, which can be used for on-property purchases ranging from food and beverages to spa treatments, depending on the hotel.

Citi’s initial rollout of the Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection is confined to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean, but the company plans to expand the two portfolios to new destinations around the world over the next year.

Complimentary fourth night on certain hotel bookings

Both the Citi Prestige® Card and Citi Premier® Card offer a fourth night free on eligible bookings, twice per year. One of the best ways to maximize use of Citi’s travel portal is to combine this card benefit with the perks offered as part of the Hotel and Luxury Collections.

To use this benefit, filter your hotel search results in the portal to display hotels designated as “Complimentary 4th Night Eligible.” Book at least four nights and look closely at checkout to confirm that the system applied the savings.

Bonus points for bookings

Extra points are certainly a way to sweeten any deal when it comes to booking, and Citi is offering a hefty promotion in concert with the new portal.

Between now and June 30, 2024, the Citi Prestige® Card and Citi Premier® Card members can earn a total of 10 points per dollar when booking hotels, rental cars or eligible attractions through Citi Travel.

Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card and Citi Rewards+® Card members can earn a total of 5 points per dollar on those bookings.

Earn airline miles

Similar to other credit card travel portals like American Express or Chase, Citi members earn airline miles even when booking through the portal. Just add your airline frequent flyer number to the reservation.

On the other hand, a notable downside of Citi’s new portal is that, at least for now, members cannot add their hotel loyalty numbers. So, for instance, if you book a stay at a Hilton property through Citi Travel, you would earn ThankYou points for the purchase, but not Hilton Honors points for the stay.

The Citi Travel with Booking.com portal includes 24/7 customer service, which can assist with reservation and rebooking needs.

Members with existing travel booked through the old ThankYou Travel Center (prior to March 19, 2023) can access their reservation at ThankYou.com. Select “Travel” and then “My trips."

Despite improvements as part of the revamped Citi Travel portal, it likely won’t appeal to points and miles enthusiasts whose main objective is to maximize value.

However, for others who simply want to use their ThankYou points, it offers plenty of options. And there are certain situations where booking through Citi Travel can be even more beneficial than transferring points, particularly as the company continues to expand the Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection.

The opportunity for certain cardmembers to earn up to 5 or 10 points per dollar on purchases through the portal doesn’t hurt, either. Plus, using the portal can help you travel on dates with limited award availability and expand your lodging selection.

Although the value of your rewards won’t always reach its ceiling, you’ll keep money in your pocket by using ThankYou points for travel.

The information related to the AT&T Access More Card from Citi and Citi Prestige® Card has been collected by NerdWallet and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer or provider of this product or service.

Hospitality industry looks strong for 2023 – despite recession fears

Umar Riaz

EY Americas Real Estate, Hospitality & Construction Consulting Leader

Related topics

Despite economic headwinds stoking fears of a 2023 recession, the hospitality industry still defies expectations and posts strong numbers..

  • Travel demand, while currently robust, may be impacted if companies need to cut costs in the face of a worsening economic outlook.
  • The industry should continue to focus on efficiencies at the hotel and corporate levels, prioritizing customer experience, analytics and automation.
  • Transaction activity is likely to be slower; due diligence is critical so teams are prepared when the right deal comes along.

T here is one cautionary note that is always important to keep in mind when evaluating the hospitality industry. Market performance of hospitality has exceeded other industries such as technology and retail, with the gap widening in the second half of the year.¹ Add the fact that revenue per available room (RevPAR) has exceeded GDP growth during the current economic cycle, and 2023 should be a good year for the hospitality sector (see graphic).

  • As per a CBRE study, during the 2009 recession, 10.2% of the properties that experienced a decline in RevPAR saw their rooms revenue drop by more than 30%. On average, these properties also suffered a 35.3% drop in total revenue, but the decline in Gross operating profit averaged 57.0%.
  • As per a CBRE study, in 2001, properties that experienced a decline in RevPAR, only 2% saw RevPAR fall by more than 30%. On average, these properties suffered a 35.3% drop in total revenue which resulted in a 54.2% decline in Gross operating profit.
  • The impact of Covid-19 ended the nine-year trend of profit growth and positive RevPAR for U.S. hotels since 2010, with a significant upwards spike of RevPAR starting in 2020.

How EY can help

Hospitality Services

EY global hospitality professionals can help you build a hospitality business of the future. Find out how.

“Historically there has been a strong correlation between GDP growth and RevPAR,” said Umar Riaz, EY Americas Hospitality Sector Leader, in a recent interview with HOTELS Magazine. “But it’s my opinion that given the current dynamics of the travel industry, even if there is a mild recession in the next six months or so, the travel industry will still perform strongly.”

The post-pandemic urge to travel remains strong, which should drive continued growth in 2023. In the US, RevPAR was up 8.1% in 2022 from 2019, and Europe was up 6.1% for the same period. Asia, driven primarily by China, was the weak spot with a 31.2% RevPAR decline from 2019 to 2022. The industry’s average daily rate (ADR), which measures the average rental revenue earned by an occupied room per day, was up 13.6% last year in the US and 18.5% in Europe, when compared with 2019 figures.²

Business travel is also poised for recovery as companies ramp up their travel budgets. Trade shows and conferences are selling out, reflecting the pent-up demand that persists across all industries to get out of the office. Another factor in the industry’s resurgence is the growing work-from-home (WFH) segment of the workforce. In some cases, those employees build their travel plans around both business and leisure. Bleisure travel, where business travelers add on a day or budget extra time in their work trip for sightseeing or some other type of leisure activity, is a growing trend. The result of these market developments is more revenue and continued economic recovery for the hospitality sector.

Reasons for optimism in hospitality sector

The EY organization projects that the global economic picture is mixed heading into 2023, depending on the region, but the long-simmering slowdown will likely turn into a global recession. In the US, the economy is visibly cooling because of persistent inflation, rising borrowing costs, deteriorating private sector morale and rapidly slowing global economic activity. Elevated inflation and a lingering energy crisis will lead to a moderate recession in the Eurozone. In China, the economic outlook remains uncertain, with growth constrained by the recently lifted zero-COVID-19 policy, a lingering property sector downturn and weakening global trade activity.

However, several factors contribute to optimism for the hospitality sector in 2023:

  • Leisure demand, group business travel poised to remain strong: Consumer surveys show that most people are planning at least one leisure trip over the next six months. Rising inflation might mean that consumers will make different choices when they travel, but demand still remains strong. As for group business travel, key statistics, such as a convention center booking increase of 13% in 2023 relative to 2022, point to a strong year for group travel.³ According to a survey conducted by American Express, 65% of respondents expect their spend on meetings and events to increase in 2023.⁴
  • Business travel recovery: According to a recent survey by Morgan Stanley of global corporate travel managers, travel budgets are likely to be 98% of 2019 levels, with nearly half the respondents expecting an increase of budgets relative to 2019.⁵
  • China’s re-opening: Before the pandemic, China was the world’s largest outbound travel market, with Chinese travelers taking 154 million trips and spending $255 billion.⁶ With the lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions, Chinese travelers will begin to travel again in 2023. While there are still significant airline capacity constraints, there will be a measurable impact on both the domestic and international hospitality industries.
  • The rise of the digital nomad:  According to a recent EY survey of companies , 87% said that COVID-19 has had a profound effect on the workplace, with 72% saying that they now have a hybrid remote/office approach and 75% saying that they anticipate no central office in the foreseeable future. As these workplace trends take hold and people become untethered to their offices, these digital nomads will become even more mobile and will work from places where they want to travel.
  • Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act: Spending associated with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) that was passed in the US in 2022 should lead to additional spending on hotels.

Deals market could see a slowdown

One aspect of the hospitality sector that isn’t expected to be so strong in 2023 is the transaction market.

With the Fed continuing to raise interest rates in an attempt to drive down inflation, the cost of borrowing money will continue to go up. As a result, transaction activity is likely to be slow in 2023. Deals will still get done, and there will be opportunities to create value and drive growth through M&A activity in the hospitality sector. Transaction due diligence will be even more critical to identifying the right transaction, given the market circumstances. In some cases, 2023 will be a good time to focus on organic growth. But teams still need to monitor what’s happening in the industry and be prepared should the right deal come along.

Boomerang workers?

During the pandemic, the hospitality industry lost much of its workforce as travel restrictions forced hotels to make severe staffing cuts. The industry’s unemployment rate leapt from 5.7% in February 2020 to 39.3% in April 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).⁷ Many of these workers took jobs in the technology sector, which desperately needed to fill positions to keep up with sudden demand created by lifestyle changes that came about due to the pandemic.

Three years later, the world is adjusting again. While tech companies shed jobs in response to the state of the economy in 2023, the hospitality industry is now ready to hire in response to the expected increase in travel. One of the sectors that had the biggest job growth in December 2022 was travel and leisure. Hotels that have struggled to provide the same level of service and amenities they did prior to the pandemic may be able to fill some of these positions and get closer to full strength.

Bottom line: 2023 should be a good year for the travel and hospitality industry.

The hospitality industry has much to look forward to in 2023 as travel demand continues to grow faster than expected over the last few years. Consumer research reveals that leisure and group business travel remains strong and new workplace trends allow people to travel more as they can work from anywhere. While the transaction market slows down, there is still opportunity to find a good deal while still focusing on organic growth.
