Contiki is great for a particular audience, the 18 to 35 year old traveler. but are they any good.

Contiki is great for a particular travel audience. Generally, it’s aimed at younger budget-minded travelers 18 to 35 year olds. Contiki has hundreds of tours operating all around the globe and their whole thing is ‘social travel’. This is for those that want to soak in the cultural side of the destination and dive deep into the local nightlife as well. It makes sense any 18 – 35 year old looking to travel on a budget and party at the same time. Let us take a deeper dive this Contiki Review and see if it’s the right fit for you.

What is Contiki?

Founded in 1962 Contiki is a New Zealand-based tour company catering to the 18 to 35 year old market. The idea came from the founder looking to travel on a tight budget yet still have fun and see Europe. Currently, they operate over 300 tours around the world so it’s easy for anyone to find a cool trip anywhere on the globe. I need to mention they won’t allow travelers over the age of 35 to join their tours.

Let me say right now that the average age for a Contiki traveler is 18 to 27.

Accommodations: BUDGET! You’ll be staying in either in a hotel or a hostel so understand these aren’t 4 or 5-star hotels or hostels. However, Contiki does its best to find the best 3-star type hotel or hostel. Depending on the continent that 3-star Euro accommodation will be a 5-star somewhere else. The negative is if you’re sharing a room, you’re hoping your roommate won’t snore and will be courteous with the shared space.

That being said, I never felt unsafe in the locations I stayed in. For the most part, you’ll be out all day and partying most of the night, that bed is there for you to crash.

Hot Tip: If you want you can book your own room, that’s supplemental when you book the tour through Contiki directly.

Group Size: As with any Contiki tour you can expect a minimum of 20 or more travelers with you on the bus. I remember when I did a short 8 day trip I was with 25 or so other travelers. Many travelers will book multiple tours with Contiki so it’s common that during a trip a few will drop off while others will join the group.

Contiki Guides: They round up the whole group in the lobby of the hotel / hostel and they take you on the tour. Yes, they’re like the chaperones we had during a school trip. With one difference, they’re all young and they too want to party. They will take you around the city and do a pub crawl, hit up a club or some really cool local spot.

Food: Breakfast is provided on all the tours however from what I remember lunch and dinner was all on you. To save money you can catch some street food that is delicious and cheap.

Cost: Totally depends on where you plan to go and for how many days. A tour can range from $800 to $3500. Traveling to Europe will obviously cost more than Asia. Also, you’ll need some spending money for whatever comes up, I remember all I brought was $500 for the week.

Drinking and Partying: As you probably already know Contiki definitely has a partying atmosphere however I strongly suggest those 18 to 20 years old travelers to perhaps hold off on going to the US. The legal drinking age in the US is 21 and it’s strictly enforced. I’ve had many of my Australian travel mates say that when they visited the US the younger travelers couldn’t visit any bars or clubs.

Contiki Review:

My very first solo tour was with Contiki, I landed in Germany and ended in Prague. I can’t tell you how much fun I had. I have to be 100% honest, I was partying like an animal with everyone else so much of my day was spent being hungover. I pretty much drank Red Bulls to pull it together and finished the tour like a champ. The tour started in Berlin where I met with the tour guide and he was extremely helpful in getting me situated to my room, the rules of the tour, and explaining what optional add-ons were available.

The guide we had was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area and took his time in explaining everything. He was very outgoing so that made the tour better.

Having a good guide is everything!

The breakfast buffet I do remember was absolutely incredible! After a full night of drinking the first thing I wanted to do is chow down on food to soak up the alcohol….we all were doing it.

The negative part was the bus transportation from Berlin to Prague, it was a 5 hour drive so we lose most of the morning.

Prague was the city I fell in love with. I was really awestruck by how beautiful that city is and how much more fun I had in Prague rather than Berlin. The food and beer in Prague I felt was better and there was more to do and see. When the tour ended, I really wanted to stay but alas I had to return to my life in California. That trip forever changed how I viewed traveling alone.

Final Thoughts On Contiki:

Should you go on a Contiki tour? 100% absolutely YES, if you…

• Like to party
• Want the whole trip planned for you
• Want to meet new people
• Are on a budget
• Really like to party!

Optional Add-Ons: These are excursions that Contiki sets up that do cost extra. Depending on the country you’re in they can be just about anything but always check what the add-ons are and see which you want to do. Remember these are totally optional.

Bus / Coach: This is the only real negative about Contiki, when traveling from one city to the next you’ll be on the bus or coach for a while….in some cases a few hours. That can be a real drag because you lose precious time just sitting on a bus.

Beware of Australians! Seems that all Australians go on a Contiki tour at one point in their lives. Just kidding after doing so many of these tours some of the most fun people I’ve met are from Australia and frankly, they do make the coolest travel buddies.

Contiki rolls out Social Travel trips to bring travellers closer, faster

Contiki, a tour company aimed at 18- to 35-year-olds, has rolled out Social Travel trips to enable travellers to forge stronger bonds together over shared travel preferences.

According to Celest Quek, director of marketing & communications, The Travel Corporation, Social Travel by Contiki itineraries would appeal especially to new solo travellers, as “itineraries are designed to create group dynamics fast so travellers do not feel alone for very long”.

“They are grouped with like-minded travellers who are also looking to make new friends and memories,” said Quek.

However, she stressed that Social Travel also welcomes “couples, and friends travelling together”, as the itineraries are “designed for those who prefer heightened enjoyment over dealing with the trivial stresses that can occur when traveling in a conventional way”.

To identify their travel styles, customers can approach an accredited travel agent for a full explanation of available itineraries or use Contiki’s online trip finder quiz to match them to their dream trip.

When asked how the young generation in Asia-Pacific has responded to Social Travel by Contiki, given that Asians are generally more reserved by nature, Quek stated that it has been “very positive”.

“The global pandemic has not just restricted young people’s ability to travel, but it has also closed them off to the kind of social connections that are essential for personal growth. There is a bottled-up desire for authentic human connections all over the world, even for reserved individuals,” Quek opined.

Quek remains confident in the future of travel, especially for the gen-Z and millennial segments.

She said: “More countries in the region are gradually opening up, with the likes of Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam reviving the tourism sector either with a full reopening to fully-vaccinated travellers or via bilateral engagements with other countries.

“With this rosy travel outlook, we expect to see more Asia-Pacific travellers revelling in new experiences, and making friends and good memories along the way.”

Contiki and We are Social unveil ‘Switch On Social Travel’ challenge

Ben Clare: “Travel is more enriching when you live in the moment, not just capture it.”

Social travel brand Contiki  has partnered with socially-led creative agency We Are Social Australia for its latest campaign, Switch on Social Travel.

The social-first initiative took a group of 17 creators from the US and Australia aged 18-35, representing a combined following of 20 million users, for a seven day trip through Portugal and Spain.

The campaign encouraged them to disconnect from their platforms for the duration of the trip, to immerse themselves in their travel experiences. After reconnecting online, the creators shared their experiences with their followings.

Meanwhile, Contiki’s channels provided fans with sneak peeks of the trip through video content, documented through over 30,000 photos and 40 hours of footage, which were edited into short and long-form videos.

In additional to being pulished published across Contiki and the influencers’ channels, the campaign roll out has been further broadcast across Instagram Reels, YouTube, TikTok, and other digital platforms.

Melissa DaSilva , Contiki’s North America president, said that the campaign was aimed at “ inspiring travellers to truly engage with the world around them.

“This campaign redefines the conventional use of social media in the tourism industry. It’s about inspiring the audience to rediscover the real essence of travel – connections made, cultures explored, and memories created away from the digital gaze.”

Executive creative director at We Are Social, Ben Clare , explained that “for younger generations, never before has the pressure to immortalise a holiday or experience into a flawless social media post been so great. But doing so ironically detracts from the joy of travel and being fully present in the moment.

“It’s obviously pretty unconventional to engage travel influencers in a way that actually reduces their time online, but so far it’s proven to be a powerful message: travel is more enriching when you live in the moment, not just capture it.”

Earlier this year, We Are Social managed the social strategy and execution behind Mastercard’s Australian-first motion picture without pictures,  Touch,  which  premiered at the Westpac OpenAir cinemas in February. In March, the agency teamed up with Wayside Chapel to launch a behaviour change campaign, Social60 .

"Switch On Social Travel" is a social-first campaign that encourages creators to disconnect from their social platforms, and fully immerse in the travel experience. The campaign took a diverse group of 17 influencers from the US and Australia, boasting a combined following of 20 million users predominantly aged 18-35, for an epic trip through Portugal and Spain. But in a category awash with the same tired travel content, Contiki sought to redefine the travel experience by doing the unthinkable; challenge these travel influencers to completely unplug from social media for the entirety of the trip. Freed from the pressure of posting and seeking validation on social media, the influencers delved deeper into cultural experiences, formed meaningful relationships, and rediscovered the joy of living in the moment.

"As we continue to evolve the travel experience, we're inspiring travelers to truly engage with the world around them," said Melissa DaSilva, North America President, Contiki. "This campaign redefines the conventional use of social media in the tourism industry. It’s about inspiring the audience to rediscover the real essence of travel – connections made, cultures explored, and memories created away from the digital gaze.”

Throughout the social experiment, Contiki's channels provided fans with sneak peeks of the trip through engaging video content, capturing the essence of the journey and the authentic connections made by the participants. The 7-day journey was documented with over 30,000 photos and 40 hours of footage produced, which were edited into short and long-form videos, from casual vlogs to beautifully edited films that highlight the joy of immersive travel.

After reconnecting online, the creators shared their experiences, enriched by their time offline, with their followers, sharing their stories and answering questions from the audience.

The campaign has been rolled out globally across Instagram Reels, YouTube, TikTok, and other digital platforms, published across Contiki and the influencers' channels.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Travel Advisory: Portland Aerial Tram to close for routine maintenance May 23-27

(May 16, 2024) The Portland Aerial Tram will close for scheduled maintenance from 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, reopening at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. The work is scheduled for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, when the tram experiences lower than normal use and also closes for the national holiday.

The closure will allow crews to shorten the tram’s haul rope, which is used to propel the tram cabins from one station to the other. The haul rope stretches over time and must be shortened every 18 months and replaced every six years.

During this time, shuttle service will be offered. Go By Bike services will temporarily move to Zidell Yards May 20-28.

For safety reasons, the upper tram platform and tram elevator will also be closed during the work. The pedestrian bridge through the OHSU Kohler Pavilion garage will remain open for access into the main hospital buildings from OHSU Casey Eye Institute and lower Campus Drive.  

SHUTTLE HOURS

You can catch a tram shuttle at the Whitaker Lot on the South Waterfront and OHSU Kohler Pavilion turnaround on Marquam Hill. See a map of the shuttle route .  

The shuttle hours will be:  

• Thursday, May 23:  7:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m.  
• Friday, May 24:  5:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. 
• Saturday, May 25:  9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. 
• Sunday, May 26:  No service 
• Monday, May 27 : No service, normal holiday closure

Fare will not be required to board the shuttles. Even though shuttles will be available during the Tram’s normal hours, with more running during peak times (7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.), please plan to add as much as 30 minutes to your time in transit and expect to wait 10-15 minutes at each stop.

Shuttles are ADA accessible. However, anyone needing ADA access and transport should speak to an attendant to coordinate assistance.

GO BY BIKE OPERATIONS

Go By Bike will be temporarily relocated just north of the base of the Tram, at Zidell Yards, starting Monday, May 20 through Tuesday, May 28, to facilitate the required Tram maintenance. Go By Bike will be closed Monday, May 27, in observation of Memorial Day. Normal Go By Bike operations will resume on Wednesday, May 29 at the base of the Tram. How to qualify for the Citi Strata Premier Card

You'll want a good-to- excellent credit score to have the best chance of being approved for the Citi Strata Premier. There is also an additional restriction for qualifying for this card's intro bonus. If you've received an intro bonus for the Strata Premier or the Premier card within the last 48 months, you can't earn the bonus again with a new Strata Premier Card.

It's important to note that this 48-month restriction applies to when you received the intro bonus points, not when you opened the account. If you opened a Citi Premier card in April of 2020 but didn't earn the intro bonus until early July 2020, you have to wait 48 months from July — not April — to be able to earn the Strata Premier's bonus.

Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas closing in July. Here's what's next.

After more than three decades of business, Las Vegas' famed Mirage Hotel and Casino is shuttering its doors.

The Las Vegas Strip business announced the closure Wednesday night according to a post on social media, noting the Nevada property will soon "transform."

"We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation and world-class hospitality,” the Mirage, which opened 34 years ago, posted on Facebook.

The Mirage will be ceasing operations on July 17, the post said.

'A new era'

The hotel is known for its man-made Mirage Volcano spewing fire and water since the hotel’s 1989 opening.

It is also home to a Cirque du Soleil show with Beatles music as well as the Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers show.

Hard Rock Las Vegas coming soon

The business announced the resort will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas.

"We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation, and world-class hospitality," the casino's Facebook post reads.

Hard Rock will pay nearly $80 million in severance packages for union and non-union employees who continue to work at the property until it closes, the post reads.

CBP Releases April 2024 Monthly Update

WASHINGTON — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released operational statistics today for April 2024. CBP monthly reporting can be viewed on CBP’s Stats and Summaries webpage .

“CBP continues to surge resources and personnel to impacted sectors along the border to ensure the safe, swift, and orderly processing of individuals to maximize expedited removals. We have redoubled our efforts, in coordination with partners throughout the hemisphere and around the world, to disrupt the criminal organizations and transportation networks who are putting vulnerable migrants in danger while peddling lies and profiting from them. We have executed the largest surge of removals and disruptive activities against human smuggling networks in the past decade,” said Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner . “As a result of this increased enforcement, southwest border encounters have not increased, bucking previous trends. We will remain vigilant to continually shifting migration patterns. We are still experiencing challenges along the borders and the nation’s immigration system is not appropriately resourced to handle them, so we continue to call on Congress to take action that would provide our personnel with additional resources and tools.”

CBP continues to work tirelessly to strengthen border security and enforcement efforts, including collaborating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to quickly process noncitizens encountered at the border and remove or return those who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States, delivering strengthened consequences promulgated by the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule and its associated measures. Since the lifting of Title 42 May 12, 2023 to April 30, 2024, DHS has removed or returned over 720,000 individuals, the vast majority of whom crossed the southwest border, including more than 109,000 individual family members. Total removals and returns since mid-May 2023 exceed removals and returns in every full fiscal year since 2011.

Ensuring Border Security and Managing Migration 

CBP continues to expeditiously process, remove, and strengthen consequences for individuals who cross our borders unlawfully. Individuals and families without a legal basis to remain in the U.S. are subject to removal pursuant to Title 8 authorities and are subject to a minimum five-year bar on admission as well as potential prosecution if they subsequently re-enter without authorization. No one should believe the lies of smugglers. The fact is that people without a legal basis to remain in the United States will be removed. 

The United States is working together with our domestic and foreign partners to jointly disrupt irregular migration across the region, offering safe, orderly, and lawful pathways for intending migrants and taking action against ruthless smugglers who continue to spread falsehoods and show disregard for the safety and well-being of vulnerable migrants.

In April 2024, the U.S. Border Patrol recorded 128,900 encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border. In April, encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border were 6% lower than in March 2024 and 30% lower than April 2023.

CBP continually analyzes and responds to changes in migration patterns, particularly irregular migration outside of lawful pathways and border crossings. We work with our federal and international partners to combat human smuggling. The fact remains: the United States continues to enforce immigration law, and those without a legal basis to remain will be removed. Migrants attempting to enter without authorization are subject to removal under Title 8 authorities.

The U.S. Border Patrol has undertaken significant efforts in recent years to expand capacity to aid and rescue individuals in distress. To prevent the loss of life, CBP initiated a Missing Migrant Program in 2017 that locates noncitizens reported missing, rescues individuals in distress, and reunifies decedents’ remains with their families in the border region. In April, the U.S. Border Patrol conducted 411 rescues, bringing the FY 2024 total to 3,096 rescues.

CBP One™ App   

The CBP One™ mobile application remains a key scheduling tool as part of DHS’s efforts to incentivize noncitizens to use lawful, safe, humane, and orderly pathways and processes. Generally, noncitizens who cross between the ports of entry or who present themselves at a port of entry without making a CBP One™ appointment are subject to the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule. This rule presumes asylum ineligibility for those who fail to use lawful processes, with certain exceptions. DHS encourages migrants to utilize lawful processes, rather than taking the dangerous journey to cross unlawfully between the ports of entry, which also carries consequences under Title 8.

The CBP One™ app allows noncitizens throughout central or northern Mexico who lack documents sufficient for admission to the United States to schedule an appointment and remain in place until presenting at a preferred port of entry for their appointment, reducing migrants’ need to crowd into immediate border areas. Use of the CBP One™ app to schedule appointments at ports of entry has increased CBP’s capacity to process migrants more efficiently and orderly while cutting out unscrupulous smugglers who endanger and profit from vulnerable migrants.

In April, CBP processed 41,400 individuals through appointments at ports of entry utilizing advanced information submitted in CBP One™. Since the appointment scheduling function in CBP One™ was introduced in January 2023 through the end of April 2024, more than 591,000 individuals have successfully scheduled appointments to present at ports of entry instead of risking their lives in the hands of smugglers. The top nationalities processed subsequent to arrival for their appointment are Cuban, Haitian, Honduran, Mexican, and Venezuelan.

A percentage of daily available appointments are allocated to the earliest registered CBP One™ profiles, so noncitizens who have been trying to obtain appointments for the longest time are prioritized. CBP is continually monitoring and evaluating the application to ensure its functionality and guard against bad actors. 

CHNV Parole Processes

On January 5, 2023, DHS announced processes providing certain Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans who have a supporter in the United States undergo and clear robust security vetting and meet other eligibility criteria authorization to travel to the United States in a safe, orderly, and lawful way. Once they purchase commercial airline tickets for themselves These processes were built on the success of the process for Venezuelans established in October 2022; they are publicly available online, and DHS has been providing regular updates on their use to the public. This is part of the Administration’s strategy to combine expanded lawful pathways with stronger consequences to reduce irregular migration and have kept hundreds of thousands of people from migrating irregularly.Through the end of April 2024, 434,800 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans arrived lawfully on commercial flights and were granted parole under these processes. Specifically, 95,500 Cubans, 184,600 Haitians, 83,800 Nicaraguans, and 109,200 Venezuelans were vetted and authorized for travel; and 91,100 Cubans, 166,700 Haitians, 75,700 Nicaraguans, and  101,200 Venezuelans arrived lawfully and were granted parole.

Safeguarding Communities by Interdicting Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs

As the largest law enforcement agency in the United States, CBP is uniquely positioned to detect, identify, and seize illicit drugs before they enter our communities. CBP’s combination of interdiction and intelligence capabilities, complemented by its border search authorities, scientific services, non-intrusive inspection equipment, and canine detection teams, places it at the forefront of the U.S. government’s efforts to combat illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs.

In April, CBP also announced an expanded, multi-agency effort to target transnational criminals funneling fentanyl from Mexico into American communities.  Operation Plaza Spike  targets the cartels that facilitate the flow of deadly fentanyl, as well as its analogs, precursors, and tools to make the drugs. The operation is designed to disrupt operations in the “plazas,” cartel territories located directly south of the United States that are natural logistical chokepoints within the cartels’ operations. This is the next phase in  CBP’s Strategy to Combat Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Drugs, a whole-of-government and international effort to anticipate, identify, mitigate, and disrupt illicit synthetic drug producers, suppliers, and traffickers. 

That strategy also includes conducting operations, including Operation Apollo, that target the smuggling of illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. First implemented in southern California in October 2023, and recently expanded into Arizona, Operation Apollo utilizes local field assets augmented by federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners to target drug traffickers’ supply chains in select locations based on ongoing investigations, intelligence collection, and drug seizure data. Operation Apollo targets items required in the production of illicit fentanyl, including precursor chemicals, pill presses and parts, movement of finished product, and illicit proceeds.

Nationwide in April, cocaine seizures increased by 95% compared to March. To date in FY 2024 through the end of April, CBP has seized over 11,400 pounds of fentanyl. CBP has caught more fentanyl nationwide between the start of fiscal year 2023 through April 30, 2024 than in the previous five fiscal years combined, and we continue to optimize our intelligence and field operations to stop these deadly substances from reaching American communities.

Facilitating Lawful Trade and Travel 

 As international travel continues to increase, CBP is leveraging technology to streamline efficiency and increase security at air and land ports of entry. Travelers are encouraged to utilize CBP’s mobile apps to enhance their travel experience, including the Global Entry Mobile Application and Mobile Passport Control , as well as new Global Entry Touchless Portals at nearly all international airports across the United States, which protect passenger privacy and expedite arrival processing by eliminating paper receipts.

Commercial trucks processed at ports of entry increased 15% from April 2023 to April 2024. Travelers arriving by air into the United States increased 8% in the same period; passenger vehicles processed at ports of entry increased 3% ; and pedestrians arriving by land at ports of entry increased 2% over the same period.  

CBP works diligently with the trade community and port operators to ensure that merchandise is cleared as efficiently as possible and to strengthen international supply chains and improve border security. In April 2024, CBP processed more than 3.2 million entry summaries valued at more than $289 billion, identifying estimated duties of nearly $6.4 billion to be collected by the U.S. government. In April, trade via the ocean environment accounted for 39.66% of the total import value, followed by air, truck, and rail.

Protecting Consumers, Eradicating Forced Labor from Supply Chains, and Promoting Economic Security     

CBP continues to lead U.S. government efforts to eliminate goods from the supply chain made with forced labor from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. In April, CBP stopped 392 shipments valued at more than $184 million for further examination based on the suspected use of forced labor.

Intellectual property rights violations continue to put America’s innovation economy at risk. Counterfeit and pirated goods threaten the competitiveness of U.S. businesses, the livelihoods of American workers, and the health and safety of consumers.

Consumers are encouraged to be alert to the dangers of counterfeit goods especially when shopping online as they support criminal activity, hurt American businesses, and often have materials or ingredients that can pose serious health and safety risks. Every year CBP seizes millions of counterfeit products worth billions of dollars had they been genuine. In April, CBP seized 1,736 shipments that contained counterfeit goods valued at more than $235 million . CBP completed 20 audits in April that identified $13 million in duties and fees owed to the U.S. government, stemming from goods that had been improperly declared in accordance with U.S. trade laws and customs regulations. CBP collected over $5.7 million of this identified revenue and from previous fiscal years’ assignments. 

CBP is on the frontline of textiles and trade agreements enforcement, combating textile imports that are not compliant with U.S. trade laws. Protecting the domestic textile industry and American consumers is vital to U.S. national security, health care, and economic priorities. Toward this end, CBP is intensifying its targeting and enforcement efforts to increase and expedite the prosecution of illegal customs practices. CBP’s efforts include de minimis compliance, forced labor enforcement, cargo compliance, regulatory audits, and public awareness. This month DHS announced an enhanced strategy to combat illicit trade and level the playing field for the American textile industry, which accounts for over 500,000 U.S. jobs and is critical for our national security. The plan details the actions CBP and Homeland Security Investigations will take to hold perpetrators accountable for customs violations and safeguard the American textile industry.

Defending our Nation’s Agricultural System     

Through targeting, detection, and interception, CBP agriculture specialists work to prevent threats from entering the United States.  

CBP issued 7,139 emergency action notifications for restricted and prohibited plant and animal products entering the United States in April 2024. CBP conducted 101,416 positive passenger inspections and issued 823 civil penalties and/or violations to the traveling public for failing to declare prohibited agriculture items.

If you want to see some spectacular artwork, housed under some equally beautiful architecture, then you really can’t go wrong with a trip to Paris . Of course, the city of love is also the city of the most famous smile, but the Mona Lisa and the Louvre aren’t the only artworks and museums. In fact, Paris has over 140 museums, which is kind of a crazy number seeing as the city isn’t that big. So deciding which ones to bump to the top of your bucket list can be a little challenging.

Whether you’re after paintings, sculptures, design, fashion, or something modern, you’ll be able to find a museum that caters to your artistic tastes and interests. We think these are the 15 best museums in Paris to visit on your first trip around the city of love – though keep in mind that there are SO many more to see as well! 

Road to Paris

1. The Louvre

Okay so let’s get the Louvre out of the way. It’s stunning, it’s iconic, and it’s huge – you could get lost here (literally) for days because of the sheer size of it. It’s the biggest museum in the world, so naturally it attracts most of the world as well. Prepare for there to be some crowds, especially around the Mona Lisa which many globe-trotters come specially to see.

But it is an absolute must-see, even if you’re only stopping by at the end of your walk through the Jardins des Tuileries. The courtyard is where you’ll find the famous glass pyramid and just standing outside the Louvre and being in its presence will tell you how incredible it is. 

If you are planning on heading to the Louvre during your Parisian stay, we highly recommend booking your tickets in advance so you can skip some queues – and the sooner you get there the better!

2. Le Palais de Tokyo

Le Palais de Tokyo plays host to Europe’s biggest revolving collection of modern and contemporary art. This really is one of the best museums in Paris just because of the variety of artwork it holds, and the ever-changing nature of it – you could visit Le Palais de Tokyo every time you’re in Paris and see different exhibitions each time! 

Whether it’s photography, sculptures, installations, textiles, or film, the Palais de Tokyo has an exhibition for every kind of art-lover. The building itself is gorgeous with columns, reliefs, and a pond reflecting the museum’s grandeur. The east wing of the building belongs to the City of Paris and plays host to the Paris Museum of Modern Art – so really you’re getting two museums in one here!

3. Le Musée de l’Orangerie

Most famous as the museum which is home to Monet’s collection of eight stretching canvases called Les Nymphéas, gifted by the artist himself, Le Musée de l’Orangerie is not to be missed! 

It’s not the biggest museum in Paris, in fact it’s quite small, but the serene interiors and beautiful artwork dotting the walls will make you want to stay a while. Not to mention, it’s located right in the Jardin des Tuileries, neighbouring the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay on the other side, so it’s a great one to visit during a museum-hopping day trip! They have a mix of permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, as well as live events encompassing art, literature, and music.

4. Centre Pompidou

The first thing you’ll notice about the Centre Pompidou is that it really stands out. Windows and metal frames all around, colourful pipes and an outdoor escalator, you really can’t miss it. This is one of the top modern art museums in the world and it holds everything from paintings, sculptures, installations, and photography from a wide breadth of national and international artists. This museum also features fashion and furniture to give you a taste of something different.

Unfortunately, you’ll have to make your trip to the Centre Pompidou quite soon as it is scheduled to close in 2025 for 5 whole years. This is because the ‘inside out’ architecture it’s known for has suffered some significant wear and tear and needs some refurbishment. So, head out to see artists from Picasso to Kandinsky soon, or opt to wait 5 years to make that discovery even sweeter.

5. Le Musée d’Orsay

What was once a train station is now one of the best museums in Paris, and easily one of the most popular. The interior is stunning: white marble floors and a glass and gold domed roof – this is exactly the grace you’d expect from one of the best art museums in Paris! But, you’re not here for the interior, you’re here for the art – and there’s plenty.

Turner, Van Gogh, Caillebotte, Renoir, there’s a true collection of art spanning the ages and movements here so if you want a glimpse into impressionism, modern art, sculpture, Pre-Raphaelites, and Christian art then this is the place to go. The museum also has a cafe at the top right by the clock face which you can look out of and see the Seine with the Louvre and Le Petit Palais across the river!

6. Fondation Louis Vuitton

Rapidly becoming one of the most popular museums in Paris, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is hailed for its commitment to making the arts and cultures accessible to all. Owned by the luxury goods group LVMH, it hosts temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art which ranges from sculptures, installations, paintings, etc. and they also organise stage events such as concerts, live performances, film screenings, dance, and more. 

On top of this, the Fondation Louis Vuitton also commissions site-specific pieces from national and international artists, so you can really see some unique artwork on a visit here. The building itself is a work of art, reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House with waving panes of glass, water features, and a surrounding of lush parks.

7. le petit palais.

One of the most majestic museums on this list (though a lot of Parisian architecture is), Le Petit Palais is not to be missed. You’ll pass through gilded doors under a grand arch, which in turn is under an impressive dome crowning the roof, and immediately the scene is set. Le Petit Palais is easily one of the best museums in Paris for its elegance and the incredible art inside.

Originally built in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle, Le Petit Palais is now known as Paris’s museum of fine arts – so you’ll be seeing some truly beautiful things inside that’ll dazzle any art-lover or connaisseur. The museum also has a lovely little courtyard filled with greenery and a pond, as well as a cafe where you can sit and enjoy the sun.

Le Grand Palais, which is just across the road from the Petit Palais, is also an incredible music with huge halls opened up by the glass ceiling. If you’re heading to the Paris 2024 Olympics , then check out the Grand Palais as this is where the fencing events will take place!

8. Musée des Arts Décoratifs

Split into three sites around the city, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is the perfect stop for anyone with an interest in the decorative arts. Here you’ll be able to discover history through furniture, home ornaments, textiles, jewellery, etc. dating all the way back to the Middle Ages.

It’s an impressive collection which will highlight the human experience across centuries and you’ll probably be learning a thing or two along the way! It’s a mix of beauty and intelligent design across three stunning buildings in Paris – the day trip is worth it!

9. Musée Rodin

Primarily dedicated to the beautiful sculptures of artist Auguste Rodin, this museum is located in what looks like a manor house straight out of Bridgerton . With gardens and idyllic walking paths and plenty of trees, this museum is a great place to spend a sunny day. 

Scattered throughout the home are many marble, clay, plaster, and bronze sculptures depicting detailed scenes and anatomy. There is also a selection of Rodin’s letters, antiques, sketches and paintings on show, including the famous and controversial Before the Creation .

10. La Bourse de Commerce

La Bourse de Commerce is one of the best museums in Paris that wasn’t always a museum! Much like the Musée d’Orsay, this gorgeous building was once the centre of trade and negotiation as well as an area which provided services to businesses. Now this museum pays homage to the work of François Pinault with a permanent collection.

La Bourse de Commerce also holds temporary installations and invites artists to make work that is either inspired by the building’s architecture, or that can interact with it. With a stunning glass dome and an intricate fresco that wraps around the whole hall, the museum is a work of art in and of itself.

11. l’institut du monde arabe.

L’Institut du Monde Arabe is both an art and history museum as it covers Arabic heritage in France, its influence on French culture and vice versa, and aims to teach visitors about the Arabic world’s religions, languages, sciences, and communities. It’s a true learning experience and you’ll come out of a visit here a whole new person!

The building features an exterior of mirror-finished tiles with designs reminiscent of those found in Morocco which is brilliant under the sun! It’s also located by the Panthéon, La Sorbonne, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Jardin du Luxembourg, so you can have a day full of culture.

12. Musée de la Vie Romantique

Translated as ‘The Museum of Romantic Life’, this one is honestly quite underrated despite being a really cool museum in Paris – and so fitting for the city of love. Spread over two 19th century mansions (with the most adorable mint green shutters!), this museum is not only interesting but also cosy.

One mansion houses a tribute to the poet George Sand, displaying various artefacts and writings from her life, and you’ll be able to walk past rooms and hallways decorated with art from the Romantic era in both mansions. Once your tour is over – or maybe as a break between buildings – you should 100% enjoy a snack at the garden café. You’re also not far from Montmartre for even more exploration.

13. Musée Picasso Paris

This one is fairly self-explanatory: if you’re a fan of Picasso and all things Cubism then you have to make an obligatory stop at the Musée Picasso. But it’s not just Guernica and Portrait of Dora Maar , you’ll get to see the full evolution of Picasso’s work and style over his career.

But it’s not just Picasso, the museum also puts on temporary exhibitions revolving around other works and artists, making it a museum you can definitely visit more than once.

14. Musée Carnavalet

This is one of the best museums in Paris if you want to learn about Paris itself! The history of the city is traced back to prehistory, so this is some really in-depth learning. With over 4,000 artefacts on display, you’ll get to see restored architecture and furniture, paintings, items from daily life, textiles, and so much more. The museum itself is the oldest in Paris, having opened in 1880 at the Carnavalet Mansion which was a hotel. It’s been renovated and extended since to make room for the growing collection.

Stepping into the Musée Carnavalet is like stepping into a time machine – this is really a place to learn and get inspired.

Planning a museum day trip?

The great thing about Paris is that it’s so well connected. You can walk to all the main attractions in a day if you’re so inclined, or obviously take the metro from place to place really easily as well. This means that you’ll be able to squeeze in quite a few visits no matter how short your stay is in the city!
