I have a 64 Galaxie XL 500 Convertible with a 289 and a 64 500 with a 390 Column shift. I would like to take the 390 out of the 500, warm it up a tad-(Clay Smith 282 Solid, Aluminum heads, 427 Exhaust manifolds, etc) and drop it into the Convertible. I would like a good performance trans so I was thinking that I should swap out the Cruise-O for a C6. My concern is that the 390 trans has the same D1 D2 set up as the 289 Cruise-O, is this true? I have done this swap before, at a younger age when I was less picky about things, and I remember I had to modify the cross member and I never got the XL shifter to actually be in the gear indicated on the shifter. So, now for the questions, will the stock Trans, Cruise-O, from the 390 car work for a hot 390, I would like to keep this trans if it will live. I will need a higher stall Converter are they available?. Or should I can the Cruise-O and go for a C6 which introduces other questions. Is there a shift arm for a C6 that will work with the XL shifter? Has someone on the forum built a "nice" cross member for this application. Thanks in Advance, Joe

Cruise- O- matic C6 swap??

  • Add to quote

I have a 65 Galaxie convertible with a fresh 352. My Cruise-o-matic is on its way out. Does any one know what flexplate I would need to do a C6 swap? Could I buy one for a 390? also what starter would I need? Any one who has done this please let me know of any headaches involved. Thanks for any info.

Use your stock flex plate. That's what I did on my 390 stroker/C-6. They are the same. As for the starter, use a later style because the old one is too long. I used a RobbMc mini in mine because of header clearance issues. Works great. Oh by the way, some flexplates used a flat steel reinforcement ring that fits around the flywheel bolts. I don't have an extra but they are pretty common. Maybe another member has a spare. Don

When I called the tbird houses, either I'm having an extremely difficult time explaining what I'm looking for, or they simply don't carry it. Mine is worn to put it nicely. The rear of the tranny rests on this x-member and I think it metal to metal sometimes. How would I ask for this bushing when I call the parts house.. Rear tranny x-member bushing? Why don't they understand? Does anyone have a part number?

  1. Cruise-O-Matic MX to C6 Conversion

The C6 will require a lot of changes (as has been discussed) but the are a better consideration than the FMX for performance use. 66 Mustang Coupe. 365hp, 4spd Toploader, sub-frame connectors. 1961 - 1966 F-100 & Larger F-Series Trucks - Cruise O Matic to C-6 conversion? - I'm throwing in the towel on building my Cruise-O-Matic tranny for my 66 F-250. After the third build, I cant seem to get it right. So, I think I'll just order a remanned C-6 from the parts house. ... When I swapped from a C-O-M to a C6 and the only things I needed ...

  3. cruise-o-matic to C6 transmission swap

The cruise-O-matic that came in your 62 would have had the long starter drive originally, untill 66 or 67. The long starter drive won't fit in the later c-6, so you will have to use the later FE starter unless its already bean changed out, and I believe the flex plate as well. oldtin, Apr 23, 2010. 4. Cruise-o-matic to C6 in a 65

First, let's confirm what we're working with: 1965 Galaxie 500 hardtop, originally a 352 with a Cruise-o-Matic transmission. The 352 was turfed for a 390 last year, and the transmission was original. The C6 I used had a casting code of D4TP7006, which from my searches indicate it originally came out of an F-100 truck.

My project is a '64 Galaxie 500 Convertible w/ 352fe and 3 spd cruise O matic. When I bought the car the trans fluid level was a quart over full. Since correcting the fluid level I have now ...

  7. Cruise O Matic to C-6 conversion?

The Ford C6 transmission was produced between the late 1960's and early 1990's and was mainly used as a heavy duty automatic transmission for cars, vans, pick ups and trucks. The standard gear ratios are 2.46:1 first gear,1.46:1 second gear, and 1:1 third gear. For a brutal increase in off the line accelleration it can be ordered with our custom ...

  8. cruise o matic vs. C6 swap?!!?

My son & I replaced the Cruise O with a C-6 in his 59 T-bird. The case above the Torque Converter is larger on the C-6 but it still missed the firewall by 1/2 inch. The trans mount is in a different location but a simple plate will take care of that. I built him a new trans cross member since his FE is close to 500 HP.

  9. Transmission Swap C6 back to a Cruise-O-Matic

  11. Cruise-O-Matic and/or C-6?

  13. Cruise-O-Matic to C6 conversion in 64 galaxie XL Questions

The Cruise-O in the other '64 will have the same PRN-D1-D2-L shift pattern as your small block COM. I, like you, had to make my own crossmemeber for a C6 transplant - I have heard the Crites ones fit like poop and must also be cut and modified to work in 60-64 full size cars. I re-named the Cruise-O-Matic in my '62 the Slip-O-Matic.

  14. '65 Cruise-O-Matic to C6 conversion

So I figure the C.O.M wouldn't handle it so I'm going to a C6 with a CK performance 4 pinion planetary with a lower 1st and 2nd. I'm putting it all in soon and was wondering if anyone has done the C6 conversion. I have the C6 motor mounts and tranny mounts and forward cross member. But the problem is the C6 is longer.

  15. Replacing Cruise-O-Matic with C6 in a '66 short bed

The cruise-o-matic in my '66 F100 short bed 2wd 390 needs rebuilt. I have a core C6 out of a 1960s car FE block that I was thinking of having rebuilt and using that instead. I measured the C6 front to crossmember at 22.5" and front to tail end at 34". My cruise-o-matic is shorter at around 20.5" to crossmember and overall around 25".

  16. Technical

On a 63 Cruise-O-Matic, the kickdown rod is only for a wide open throttle downshift. The linkage from the carb pushes the lever down only at WOT. The rest of the shift points and the transmission operating pressure are controlled by the vacuum modulator; actually a balance between modulator pressure and governor pressure.

  18. C6 Conversion

As far as I know, the Cruise-O-Matic can take pretty much the same amount of horsepower/torque as a C6. It handled the 340 hp of the M code sports engine and also the 400 hp of the 427 race engines. The C6 was introduced in November 1966 as a direct replacement for the Cruise-O-Matic.

  19. Cruise-O-Matic vs. C4 vs. C6 vs. AOD vs. etc etc

well..by far the easiest conversion, is to a C6. While there are "kits" to physically bolt a C4 or AOD to our FE's, it's significantly more expensive todo that swap. Not to mention a smartly built C4 or AOD would be advised to handle the additional torque, horsepower and weight of the bird.

  20. 66 F-250 Cruise-O-Matic to C-6 tranny swap?

    1961 - 1966 F-100 & Larger F-Series Trucks - 66 F-250 Cruise-O-Matic to C-6 tranny swap? - I have a 66 F-250 Camper Special, 352 FE engine and Cruise-O-Matic transmission with a bolt on yoke. 21. Ford C6 transmission

The Ford C6 is a heavy-duty automatic transmission built by Ford Motor Company between 1966 and 2004. It was marketed as the "SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic." Compared to its predecessor MX transmission, the C6 offered lower weight, less complexity, less parasitic power loss, and greater torque capacity for larger engines. It did this without exceeding the packaging dimensions of the MX.

  22. cruise-o-matic vs C6

The Cruise-O-Matic has a removable bell housing and the C6 does not, they are as different as night and day and both have there own chapters in the manual. The transmission codes for 1966 are: Code 7 & 8 Cruise-O-Matic. Code 4 is the C6. Code 6 is the C4.

  23. cruise-o-matic vs C6

Clutch, Transmission, Differential, Axle & Transfer Case - cruise-o-matic vs C6 - here's my delima, and i hope i'm in the right forum. First of all its a car, so please bear with me.
