Eiffel Tower to Louvre Museum – by Metro, Bus, Taxi and walk
Many tourists on a Parisian holiday visit the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum on the same day.
Some visit the Louvre Museum first because it involves 2 to 3 hours of walking, and then head out to the Eiffel Tower.
Others prefer to explore the Eiffel Tower first and then visit the art galleries of the Louvre.
There are many reasons to plan a visit to the Louvre later in the day—visitors may want to be indoors during the hotter part of the day or experience the Louvre’s glass pyramid all lit up at night.
If you plan to see the art Museum first, check out our article on how to go from the Louvre Museum to the Eiffel Tower .
If you want to check out the Iron Lady and then go to the Louvre Museum, continue reading.

Otherwise, you may spend 30 to 90 minutes (depending on the season) at the ticket counter lines at each of the attractions.
If you have already bought tickets online, you can head straight to the elevators to ascend the Eiffel Tower.
In 90 minutes, you can explore the first and second floors of the Eiffel Tower and see stunning views of Paris from the third floor.
Once you have explored the Parisian Tower, reaching the Louver Museum will take you at least half an hour.
This time will vary depending on your choice of transport.
Tourists who are in a hurry are known to finish exploring the Louvre in 2 hours.
However, for a good tour of the world’s best masterpieces, you need at least 3 hours.
Whichever tourist attraction you see first, both are sure to leave lasting memories on you and your family (or group).
Tip: You can also visit the Eiffel Tower during the day and the Louvre Museum at night .

Visual Story : 16 must-know tips before visiting Louvre Museum
The Louvre Museum is 4.3 Km (2.7 Miles) from the Eiffel Tower, on the other side of the River Seine.
A taxi can cover this distance in approximately 12 minutes.
The walking distance is 3.5 Km (2.1 Miles).
If you decide to walk, you will need around 45 minutes. It is a nice walk, with the river crossing at Pont Royal (Royal Bridge).
From Eiffel Tower to Louvre Museum
You have four options for getting to The Louvre from the Eiffel Tower: the metro, the bus, the taxi, and a leisurely walk.
Paris has an evolved Metro service, and almost every place has a metro station within 500 meters (1/3 of a mile).
There are two metro stations near the Eiffel Tower: Bir-Hakeim, which serves Line 6, and Alma-Marceau, which serves Line 9.
A 10-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower gets you to Bir-Hakeim , where you must board a Line 6 train.
You will get off at Charles de Gaulle-Étoile station, which is about 7 minutes away and 5 stops from Bir-Hakeim. You can board the Line 1 train from here to the Palais Royal Musée du Louvre station.
The whole journey will take approximately 35 minutes.
The other option is to get to Alma-Marceau Station, which is 1 km from the Eiffel Tower (0.62 miles).
A 15-minute walk will get you to Alma-Marceau , from where you must board Line 9 to get to Franklin D. Roosevelt station.
You will reach the Franklin D. Roosevelt station in 2 minutes, where you must get down and board a Line 1 train.
After five minutes and four stops, you will reach Palais Royal Musée du Louvre station.
The whole journey takes approximately 30 minutes.
Because you must keep changing trains, we don’t recommend using the metro.
A taxi is the fastest way to get from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre Museum.
If you are short on time, we recommend taking a taxi.
There are many taxis around the Eiffel Tower, and if you are unable to hail one, try to find a taxi stand (also known as a taxi rank).
One of the closest taxi stands is at Hotel Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel at the corner of Rue Jean Rey and Avenue de Suffren.
It is less than 100 meters (325 feet) from Eiffel Tower.
You can also opt for taxi companies such as Centrale Taxi Paris , Les Taxis G7 , etc., which offer online booking.
For approximately €10, an Uber can drop you at the Louvre Museum.
Compared to the local Parisian taxis, most tourists find Uber drivers more polite, timely, and reliable.
Locals and tourists highly recommend bus No 72 to get to the Louvre.
This bus runs along the river Seine, and you get to see its numerous bridges and the city’s monuments along the route.
You can board Bus No. 72 from the Musée d’Art Moderne – Palais de Tokyo bus station, which is approximately 700 meters (half a mile) from the Eiffel Tower.
A brisk 10-minute walk can get you to the bus station.
After approximately 13 minutes and eight stops, you must get down at the Pont Des Arts bus stop.
The Louvre is less than a minute’s walk from the bus stop.
Check out RATP , the state-owned public transport operator, for the latest bus routes and timings.
If you have time, a healthy walk to the Louvre Museum is a good idea.
The walking distance is 3.5 Km (2.1 Miles), right along the Seine, making it an exciting 45-minute walk.
However, we don’t recommend it unless you are used to walking a lot.
Louvre Museum has approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) of art galleries to explore.
Even if you decide to spend 2 hours at the Louvre, you may end up walking around 3 Km (2 Miles).
Why would you want to tire yourself out?
Louvre and Eiffel Tower combo tours
Even though no single ticket offers access to the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, there are many combo tours with additional activities.
Two of our favorites are the ones where, besides these two attractions, you also get to board a Seine River Cruise and the one which includes a tour of the city of Paris.
A local guide accompanies you to the 2nd floor of the Eiffel Tower, after which you are on your own to the Summit (the 3rd floor).
After seeing the city’s stunning views from the top of the Eiffel Tower, you board the 1-hour Seine River Cruise.
The boarding dock is just below the Tower.
After seeing the sights of Paris from the water, head to the Louvre Museum to view masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory of Samothrace, Venus de Milo, etc.
Tour price: €140 per person
Check out this tour , which includes visits to the Eiffel Tower and Louvre, as well as access to Île de la Cité, the Latin Quarter, and Sacré-Coeur Basilica.
If, besides the Eiffel and Louvre, you would prefer to visit Notre Dame as well, check this out.
This Tootbus Hop-on Hop-off Discovery Bus Tour ticket takes visitors through the most popular landmarks of Paris, such as Haussmann, Musee d’Orsay, Trocadero, Opera Garnier, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre Museum.
Use the audio guide to learn more about the attractions you pass by.
Hop off at any stop and any number of times to explore the sights in more detail.
Pick from a 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day pass based on your schedule, budget, and comfort.

A walk from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre, Paris
Last Updated: 17 April 2024
On a Sunday morning in February I caught the RER A from Maisons-Laffitte to Paris . I had planned on the previous day an itinerary from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre. The weather forecast had been quite optimistic. Although chilly in the morning, la météo was forecasting a beautiful sunny day and it was not at all wrong!
A Winter walk from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre
Accompanied with my 2-year-old daughter, I went on a photographic walk from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre via some of Paris’ most famous landmarks: Esplanade des Invalides, Pont Alexandre III , Champs-Élysées , Place de la Concorde , and the Tuileries Garden . It seems like Paris invites us to walk without end, from one monument to the other. It took us more than 8 km to find our way from the Bir-Hakeim métro station to the Glass Pyramid of the Louvre (and as you can guess I pushed Aimée in her stroller all the way!)
- Start at: métro station Bir-Hakeim (line 6), boulevard de Grenelle (15th arrondissement)
- Arrive at: métro station Palais Royal Musée du Louvre (lines 1 and 7), place du Palais Royal (1st arrondissement)
- Distance: approximately 6.5kms (4 miles).
Champ-de-Mars and Eiffel Tower
How many times have we seen the Eiffel Tower ? Maybe a thousand times… still we’re always tempted to take tons of photos each time we see it! On Sunday morning, the Iron Lady was enhanced by the beautiful light of a February sun.
View of the tower from avenue de Suffren (15th arrondissement):
Entering the Champ-de-Mars:
A classic view of the Eiffel Tower from the Champ-de-Mars… look at that deep blue sky:
The top of the Eiffel Tower spotted through thorns made of leaf-less trees:
Even in the middle of Winter, this is a lovely Parisian place…
The Eiffel Tower in all its glory:
Aligned with a Parisian lamppost:
For great photos, stand by one of the four pillars of the tower. This one was taken on Avenue Gustave Eiffel:
A view of the Eiffel Tower from the lane in the Champ-de-Mars known as avenue Jean Paulhan. With these fir trees, it is hard to believe we are in the centre of one of Europe’s most populous cities!
One of the two ponds that makes up the English garden near the feet of the Eiffel Tower:
Let’s leave the Champ de Mars at rue de l’Université. At the intersection with avenue de la Bourdonnais (7th arrondissement), turn back to catch this great view:
Turn right to avenue de la Bourdonnais and walk until you reach rue Saint-Dominique. You’ll discover some pretty fun views of the Eiffel Tower towering the roofs of Paris:
Rue Saint-Dominique
The picturesque rue Saint-Dominique in the 7th arrondissement of Paris links the Champs-de-Mars to the Esplanade des Invalides and gives a great perspective onto the Eiffel Tower . The shopping street is lined with restaurants, bistrots, boulangeries-pâtisseries, grocery stores and other interesting bookshops. I used to work as a French teacher in a language school based in the neighbourhood!
At number 131 rue Saint-Dominique, the Neo-Classical “ Fountain of Mars ” dates back to 1806-1808 under the reign of Emperor Napoleon:
Photos taken at the intersection of rue Saint-Dominique and avenue Bosquet:
Make sure you look back from time to time, particularly when you reach the intersection with rue de la Tour Maubourg:
Pont Alexandre III
Rue Saint-Dominique takes you to the Esplanade des Invalides, a vast lawn that stretches between the Hôtel des Invalides to the River Seine.
Once on the Esplanade des Invalides, we turned left towards the River Seine and the Quai d’Orsay.
There we crossed one of my favourite bridges in Paris. Pont Alexandre III was built for the 1900 Paris World Exhibition and takes its name from the Russian Tsar.
Spanning River Seine, the bridge connects the 7th to the 8th arrondissements. With its beautiful candelabras and lamp-posts, Pont Alexandre III offers superb views to the Eiffel Tower and the big glass and iron cupola of the Grand-Palais. Here are a few shots:
The bridge leads to avenue Winston Churchill where two grand buildings are found on each side of the street: Grand-Palais and Petit-Palais.
Grand-Palais
The monumental Grand-Palais seems like it has been there for many centuries… but the structure is relatively recent as it was built for the 1900 Paris World Exhibition.
The frescoes, the statues, the columns… everything looks majestic. The Grand-Palais is topped by the mast bearing the French flag.
Petit-Palais
Opposite the Grand-Palais stands the Petit-Palais and its remarkable wrought-iron gate.
Avenue des Champs-Élysées
When we arrived on the Champs-Élysées , the traffic was not at all heavy. In the distance, behind the leafless trees, we glimpsed the windows of the Palais de l’Élysée (Élysée Palace), the official residence of the French President . Back then, François Hollande was President of France…
In the morning, the sunlight falls on the façade of the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Élysées. With good eyes (or with binoculars) you can spot visitors enjoying the view from the top of the triumphal arch!
Place de la Concorde
The Champs-Élysées ends at the majestic Place de la Concorde.
The Place de la Concorde is a treat for the eye, particularly for the one that takes the time to explore every little details: the monuments dedicated to eight cities of France, the extravagant lamp-posts, the statues of the two fountains by Jacques Ignace Hittorff and the hieroglyphics that decorate the Egyptian obelisk of Luxor .
The Ferris Wheel that stands on the Historical Axis that runs between the Louvre and the Grande Arche was due to close on the 15th February but was still open and running.
Tuileries Garden
The last stage between arriving at the Louvre is the Jardin des Tuileries. We entered the garden through beautiful gilded gates.
The exquisite Tuileries Garden was crowded by the time we reached the garden. Two of our favourite places are the terrasses (Orangerie and Jeu de Paume) offering a fine view over the busy Place de la Concorde, the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower.
The Grande Allée of the garden that runs along the Historical Axis gives spectacular views to the Grande Roue westwards and the Louvre eastwards.
The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel
At the end of the garden stands a monumental triumphal arch. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel was built by Napoleon in the early 1800s to commemorate the victory of the French Imperial Army in Austerlitz . Marking the limit between the Tuileries and the Louvre, the triumphal arch was once facing the Tuileries Palace . Since the dismantlement of the palace in the 1880s, the monument has been part of the Historical Axis.
The Louvre Palace and the Glass Pyramid
Our walk ended there… where the Kings and Queens of France had resided for centuries. The façades of the Louvre opening onto the Napoleon Courtyard and Cour Carrée are adorned with millions of Renaissance little details, reminiscent of the chateaux of the Loire Valley : chimneys, window-frames, classical statues…
The Glass Pyramid in the centre of the Cour Napoléon is unmissable. By the time we arrived there, the museum was already opened with a long waiting line at the entrance!
When the Eiffel Tower shows up behind the Louvre:
We ended our walk from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre at the métro entrance “Palais du Louvre” where a man was blowing huge bubbles to the amazement of tourists and children passing by:

I absolutely loved this tour, as my husband and I did this ourselves about 20 years ago, and even though the weather was rather grey, we still marveled at the beauty of everything. Thank you. Dian Francesca
Thank you for your comment! Yes it is a great tour, I also did it in Spring and Autumn and it was a real treat for the eyes! 🙂
Hi Pierre, Thank you for the armchair trip through Paris and the delightful pictures. Wishing you and your little family lots of happiness in your next home in the mountains. Caryl
Bonjour Caryl, Thank you very much for your kind message! It’s a pleasure to share with you our French journey! 🙂
Well done, Pierre, both for the itinerary and for the excellent photography. I wonder if the authorities will really remove the ferris wheel, as announced, to improve the view along the Historical Axis?
Thank you Keith! I’m pretty sure they will remove the Ferris Wheel… but when is the question! I heard May 2018 but other sources indicated July 2018. We’ll see who’ll won the battle whether the City of Paris or Marcel Campion (known as ‘the king of fairground entertainers’) 🙂
Thank you Pierre, I am travelling solo to France from Australia in August to celebrate my 50th birthday, I will be spending August in Paris doing day trips to other areas (Rouen, Amiens, Epernay, Versailles etc). Your walk from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre is definitely on my to do list!! Thank you for sharing your experience and photos ?? Mimi x
Thank you very much Melissa for taking the time to comment. I am very thrilled for you about your upcoming French journey. I really hope you’ll have an unforgettable time here in France! All the best!

Along with your small group, you'll continue to the city's literary heartland, the Latin Quarter, where your guide will tell stories of the famous writers who once called this place home. Here, you can also see the famous Notre Dame Cathedral from the outside—it's still undergoing repairs from the recent devastating fire, so entry isn't currently allowed.
Next, you'll catch the metro to the famous Louvre museum, home to the Mona Lisa and countless other iconic works. You'll skip the line at the Louvre so your super knowledgeable guide can show you the museum's highlights without the famously long wait. Finally, you'll cruise down the River Seine by boat, and finish you tour at France's most recognizable landmark : the Eiffel Tower. Learn the fascinating stories about the most iconic monument in Paris, before parting ways with your guide and using your entry ticket to ascend to the second floor, or enjoy a scenic river cruise on the Seine.

Montmartre, Sacre-Cœur and the Latin Quarter
Home of the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre is Paris' famous art district. Your guide will show you the best of the neighborhood this morning, and you'll learn the best spots to return to if you're planning a big night out in the city. In addition to the nightlife of the neighborhood, Montmartre was also the epicenter of the Belle Époque.
Once home to Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Modigliani, the neighborhood produced countless famous pieces of art between the 1870s and 1920s. You will pass the café where Van Gogh painted one his most scandalous works—he dared to paint a woman reading!
After visiting the Basilica of the Sacre-Coeur, you'll follow your guide to the Latin Quarter. Montmartre is the center of art, but the Latin Quarter is the center of literature. You will see the café and bookstore where Hemingway and Joyce spent their ex-pat lives in Paris. Then, you can take photos of the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral from the outside—sadly, the cathedral suffered a terrible fire in 2019 and is still being reconstructed.
Louvre Museum Tour
Skip past the famously long lines at the Louvre and see the museum's most influential works on a 90-minute tour of the Louvre. These works include the two of the most important Greek statues still standing: the Venus of Milo and The Winged Victory of Samothrace . These two famous statues are full of mystery and history, and you guide will bring them to life with stories of their meanings and origins.
You'll also see Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People. A symbol of French independence, strength and culture, it is the most politically important work at the Louvre. The painting is the most famous artistic depiction of the French Revolution and is often compared to the Washington Crossing the Delaware piece found in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Mystery Behind the Mona Lisa
Why is the Mona Lisa so famous? For starters, Mona Lisa’s expression has been often debated since its creation in the 16th century. Is she happy or sad or playful? Another intriguing thing about Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is that it's the highest insured work of art at a whopping $800 million.
Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpiece (called La Gioconda in Italian), portrays the wife of a Tuscan aristocrat named Francesco del Giacondo. Though she has been in the Louvre for over 200 years, the portrait became famous when it was stolen in 1911 in a global scandal. Now she is protected with bulletproof glass and personal body guards.
Finally, led by your professional guide, you'll head to the pièce de résistance of this Paris in a Day Tour. The guide will regale you with tales of the tower's construction, its significance to the City of Light, and the initial public reactions to this daring design. After saying goodbye to your guide, with your tickets in hand, you will have the opportunity to savor the magic of the Eiffel Tower.
Paris by Boat
With your tickets in hand, sit back and relax with beautiful views along the Seine. Paris river cruises are a great way to take in the ambiance of the city and get a taste of the luxury that Paris is known for. Cruise around the city and get a new perspective on the iconic landmarks, including the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Notre Dame, and of course, the Eiffel Tower in all its glory.

Aida was an excellent guide. This tour gave us everything we could hope for in one day in Paris. The only downside was the Eiffel Tour visit was at 930 pm, and we had tickets to a soccer match so we’re unable to include this in our tour as it could not be changed. Otherwise, an excellent day!
We had an amazing tour and saw so much of Paris! Much better than the bus tour we took the day before! I highly recommend, just be prepared for a lot of walking with a lot of steps. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand too!

Ouverture prochaine. Fermeture du 13 juillet au 25 août. Sur réservation. Cocktails : 25 euros. Verres de vin à partir de 15 euros.
1-7, rue Jean Richepin, 75116 Paris.
