Recent tour reviews

The concert in Stuttgart was not as I expected. I saw an excellent concert of Dinosaur Jr in Sao Paulo in 2010, but at this time the sound was way too loud and that made almost impossible to hear J. Mascis's voice. I like that Dino uses to play loud, but they exaggerated at this time, it was very unconfortble to stay next to the stage. The performances of Lou and Murph were excellent, but J looked like he was forced to be there.

"Hey, we got another tune for ya." Opened with Thumb, mind already blown. Of course played classics like The Wagon, Start Choppin', feel the Pain and Freak Scene. Encore of Just Like Heaven and then something I don't think I've ever seen them play. "Don't" from Bug. J just melted a few hundred faces on that one. Best guitar play I've ever seen and I've seen Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend and Eddie Van Halen. Dinosaur Jr forever!

As you'd expect- really loud, searing guitar, tight rhythm section pumped it out last night.

For me the bass player was the one who 'made' the gig.. he put boundless energy into the show and sang his song (left /right) off new album.

Sadly / strangely the bands timing was badly out on one of the old hits..feel the pain? - however the songs from new album were really well represented and it was on the whole, a great gig.

Dinosaur Jr. Plot North American Tour This Fall

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Indie rock veterans Dinosaur Jr. have announced a massive North American tour for this fall in a sign of hope that concerts may be able to resume in a somewhat normal capacity later this year.

The first of the two-leg trek kicks off September 7th at the Corona Theatre in Montreal and wraps November 27th at the House of Blues in Boston. A West Coast leg is scheduled to launch February 3rd, 2022 at Pappy’s and Harriets in Pioneertown, California, and wrap February 26th at the Ogden Theatre in Denver. Dinosaur Jr. also plans to host their annual Camp Fuzz retreat with fans July 27th through 30th in Big Indian, New York.

Tickets for all shows will go on sale Friday, March 19th, at 10 a.m. local time. Presale tickets for the tour stops and Camp Fuzz will go on sale Thursday, March 11th, via the band’s website .

Last month, Dinosaur Jr. announced a new album, Sweep It Into Space , and released the lead single, “I Ran Away.” Kurt Vile co-produced the record, which marks the band’s first since 2016’s Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not . Sweep It Into Space will arrive on April 23rd via Jagjaguwar.

Dinosaur Jr.’s ambitious tour plans are a sign that more artists are confident that some concerts and full-scale tours will be able to resume later this year. Still, even as more Americans get vaccinated, Covid-19 safety concerns remain, with some in the live entertainment industry telling Rolling Stone recently that they don’t expect pre-pandemic normalcy to return until 2022.

“I’m optimistic that if the vaccine rollout does go forward on this new timetable, we should be able to have shows by August, September, October in the amphitheaters at least,” one live industry executive, who wished to remain anonymous, said. “But the variable in all of this is what happens with these variants. And that’s the big concern for everybody.”

Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr.

Since classical-music bastion  Tanglewood  is nestled in the bucolic beauty of western Massachusetts, most people are entirely unsurprised to hear that some of New England’s most celebrated jazz and folk artists have deep roots in the area, among them Joe Morello ,  Arlo Guthrie  and  Taj Mahal .

But as shocking as it may be to some, the region has also germinated a number of ear-splitting, face-melting, head-numbing heavy-rock bands, including  Staind , formed in 1995 in Springfield, Killswitch Engage, formed in 1999 in Westfield, and the bone-crushing granddaddy of them all, the ever-brain-rattling power trio Dinosaur Jr., formed in Amherst in 1984.

With a singular sound that defies definitive categorization, Dinosaur Jr. has been labeled alternative rock, indie rock, noise rock, noise pop, hardcore punk and grunge, and the group has been enormously influential in all those genres for nearly 40 years.

Actually, though, the band has created a genre almost all its own, towering like some indomitable sonic beast that shreds its audiences to pieces with vicious, unrelenting acoustic assaults. Using extreme variations in dynamics, dazzling extended guitar solos, maximum feedback and distortion, pounding bass lines, thunderous drumming and vocalist J Mascis’ ever-distinctive whiny drawl – which he says he developed by listening to Neil Young,  Mick Jagger  and John Fogerty – Dinosaur Jr. is a stadium-filling behemoth that’s staved off near extinction more than once.

Formation, Debut album

The group was formed in 1984 as Dinosaur – not Dinosaur Jr. – by guitarist, vocalist and Amherst native J Mascis (born Joseph D. Mascis), bassist Lou Barlow, raised in Westfield, and drummer Murph (born Emmett “Patrick” Murphy), whose father was a professor at Smith College in Northampton. They built a devoted local following by playing gigs at UMass Amherst, Hampshire College and other small venues before recording an EP or LP.

In 1985, Long Island-based Homestead Records released the band’s self-titled debut, for which Mascis wrote all the songs and which was made for just $500 in a home studio in Northampton. Though the album was virtually ignored by both the mainstream and alternative press – and sold only about 1,500 copies in its first year – the group’s ferocious live shows post-punk havens like the Rathskeller  (Boston) and  The Living Room  (Providence) earned them a cult following across New England.

Sonic Youth tour, Name change

In 1986, after watching Dinosaur play at CBGB in New York City, Sonic Youth invited the band to join them on their upcoming tour of the Midwest, putting Dinosaur on the map far outside New England. Later that year, the band was forced to change its name following a lawsuit filed by members of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Country Joe & the Fish who had formed a supergroup called Dinosaur. Not wanting to sacrifice the name recognition the band had established, Mascis, Barlow and Murph simply added “Jr.”

You’re Living All Over Me, Bug

In 1987, after signing with Black Flag’s indie label SST, Dinosaur Jr. recorded their second LP, You’re Living All Over Me , an underground smash that they supported with a European tour and shows all along the east coast including one at the Nightshift Café in Naugatuck, Connecticut. In 1988, they cut the single “Freak Scene,” which became an instant college-radio hit, followed by their breakthrough album  Bug , recorded at  Fort Apache Studios . The online publication Beats Per Minute ranked #41 in its list of “Best 1980s Albums” and one critic praised Mascis’ songwriting as “outlandishly great,” noting his abundantly obvious classic-rock and folk influences.

Barlow’s departure, Sebadoh

In 1989, following a tour that included  Bunratty’s  in Boston and The Border in Burlington, Vermont, tensions between Mascis and Barlow were so high that they rarely spoke and Barlow left the group to form the Northampton-based indie-rock band Sebadoh . Don Fleming of psychedelic post-punkers The Velvet Monkeys replaced him briefly before Van Connor of Screaming Trees took over four-string duties. The new lineup had an underground hit with its non-LP cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” then left SST to sign with Sire Records, the group’s first major-label deal.

Green Mind , Whatever’s Cool with Me , Where You Been

In February 1991, Sire issued Green Mind , the band’s first album as Dinosaur Jr. but their fourth overall, which was essentially a Mascis solo effort since he wrote all the songs and played all the instruments on seven of the 10 tracks; Murph is behind the kit on three tunes. The group toured throughout the year with new bassist Mike Johnson, formerly of Slash’s Snakepit, and their opening act was Nirvana, whose second LP, Nevermind , dropped in September.

In 1992, Dinosaur Jr. recorded the EP  Whatever’s Cool with Me , followed by the 1993 LP Where You Been , which reached the top 10 in the UK and #50 in the Billboard Top 200 – the band’s first album to make that chart. The single “Start Choppin’” made it to #3 in the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The group played on the third Lollapalooza tour that summer and Murph left the group later in the year to join Boston-based alt-rockers  The Lemonheads , with that band’s drummer, George Berz, joining Dinosaur Jr.

Without a Sound , Martin & Me, Hand It Over

In 1994, with Mascis as the only remaining original member, Sire issued the next Dinosaur Jr. album, Without a Sound , which reached #44 in the Billboard Top 200; the single “Feel the Pain ” hit #4 in the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. In 1995, Mascis made his first solo acoustic tour which he recorded for his 1996 solo album  Martin & Me . In 1997, Dinosaur Jr. recorded  Hand It Over , which critics praised as Mascis’ best effort since  Bug  but charted poorly at #188 in the Billboard Top 200 and didn’t produce a hit.

Disbanding. Reunion, Later albums

In 2000, Mascis disbanded Dinosaur Jr. to start a solo career, recording  More Light  under the name J Mascis + the Fog. In the wake of the group’s demise, their songs appeared on the collections  BBC Sessions  (2000) and  Ear-Bleeding Country: The Best Of  (2001). The book  Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981–1991  (Little, Brown and Company, 2001) details the band’s backstory along with that of Mission of Burma and several others.

In 2005, after Dinosaur Jr.’s first three albums were reissued and Rhino released  J Mascis Live at CBGB’s (a recording of an acoustic gig from 1993), Mascis, Barlow and Murph reunited to play on  The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson , followed by a tour that took them across North America, Europe and Japan and their eighth studio album,  Beyond , in 2007. The reunion stuck, resulting in four more studio albums –  Farm  (2009),  I Bet On Sky  (2012),  Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not  (2016) and  Sweep It Into Space  (2021) – along with regular tours and appearances at festivals around the world.

Masics’ comments on reunion

Asked in a 2019  Rolling Stone  interview what sparked the reunion, Mascis grinned and shrugged in perfect synch with his laid-back, devil-may-care public image. “We agreed to do a TV show and a gig,” he said. “It seemed okay, so I agreed to do another thing and then a tour. It’s kind of like, each thing that came up, I’d decide if I felt like doing it or not. And then it just kind of went on and on, and we’re still doing it.”

dinosaur jr tour history

Being an asshole rock star was decidedly uncool in 1993. In the era of Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder, American indie music fans wanted their frontperson to be just like them – unassuming, honest and not interested in the trappings of fame. Despite Cobain’s meteoric rise, the archetype of the singer who gave no fucks is likely J Mascis whose three Dinosaur Jr. albums from the ‘80s set the template for ‘90s indie heroes like Pavement, Built to Spill and the Breeders.

Dinosaur Jr. wasn’t a legacy act by when the mid-‘90s rolled around though. They still produced vital music and the band is now touring to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their fifth record, Where You Been . The second Dinosaur Jr. album recorded after the departure of bassist Lou Barlow, Where You Been was the band’s best-selling record at that point in 1993, hitting number 10 on the UK charts and number 50 in the United States. A little more accessible than their earlier albums, Where You Been sounds both like a classic rock record and completely of its time.

On the second of two nights in Portland, Mascis, Barlow (who is now back in the band) and longtime drummer Murph tackled Where You Been in its entirety, along with a generous helping of Dinosaur Jr. favorites during a 19-song, nearly two-hour concert. The trio dutifully played the record in its entirety with no banter from Mascis aside from welcoming the crowd and then noting when they moved to side two after “Not the Same.” The songs didn’t stray too much from their form on the record, perhaps a bit faster and louder.

The three men lined up in a row with Mascis stage right, Murph in the middle and Barlow stage left. Watching Mascis and Barlow perform is a contrast in styles. The implacable Mascis absolutely shreds but barely a strand of his long white hair moves as he plays. Meanwhile, Barlow is a dervish of energy, his mane thrashing back and forth as he twists and turns his bass. Meanwhile, Murph beats the living hell out of his set.

On the first night, Stephen Malkmus joined the band for a song later on in the set. This time, Isaac Brock came out and did “Watch the Corners” and “Freak Scene.” Though it was cool to see a local favorite like the Modest Mouse frontman join in, he seemed a bit unsure of his parts, inserting guitar stabs that felt more at home on The Lonesome Crowded West than You’re Living All Over Me .

After stepping on and unplugging his cord a few times, Brock quipped something about how “winning isn’t for everyone” and then retreated off stage. The next guest, Bryan Giles from Red Fang, fared much better with “Sludgefeast,” pushing the older song into metal territory to the point where a small and somewhat pathetic mosh pit started up in the front. But that quickly ended after two patrons began to fight.

Peter Holmström from the Dandy Warhols also guested during a cover of “Just Like Heaven” but Dinosaur Jr. was at their best when the three members played alone. After finishing the main set with a scorching version of “Forget the Swan,” the band returned for an encore to play “Been There All the Time” and “Feel the Pain.” Mascis never once leaned into effusiveness. Instead, he let his guitar do all the talking, something he has always done in the three decades since Where You Been and the years prior to that.

Dinosaur Jr. are planning ahead to when concerts can presumably return in some fashion later this year and into early 2022.

The veteran rock band announced a lengthy run of North American tour dates on Wednesday, which, if all goes according to the United States and Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout and venue reopening projection, will begin in late July with their Camp Fuzz  summer weekend event in Big Indian, NY and will continue through the fall months and into early next year.

The main bulk of Dinosaur Jr.’s 2021 dates begin on September 7th with a show in Montreal, QC, and will continue across much of the central U.S. and Canada for a month before the first leg wraps on October 2nd in upstate New York. Following a month off, the fall leg of dates resumes on November 12th in Nashville and continues until November 20th following a gig in Boston.

The band will spend all of December and January off the road before the tour resumes again beginning on February 3rd in Pioneertown, CA, and will continue over 16 more dates along the West Coast before finally coming to a close on February 26th following a show in Denver, CO. Dinosaur Jr. is also scheduled to appear at the rescheduled Primavera Sound and NOS Primavera Sound Festivals in Spain in early June.

Tour pre-sale begins on Thursday (3/11) at 12 p.m. ET with the password “sweepit”, while the general on-sale starts next Friday (3/19) at 10 a.m. local. Head to the band’s website for tickets and tour info.

Last month Dinosaur Jr. announced the forthcoming arrival of the band’s 12th studio album with the Kurt Vile -co-produced Sweep It Into Space , due out on April 23rd via  Jagjaguwar .
