Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm secured a third DP World Tour Championship victory with a two-shot win in Dubai, as Rory McIlroy ended the season top of the DP World Tour rankings.

Rahm took a one-shot advantage into the final round and never left the top of the leaderboard during an entertaining final round at Jumeriah Golf Estates in Dubai, mixing six birdies with a lone bogey to end the week on 20 under.

The Spaniard's closest challenge came from Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren, who carded rounds of 66 and 67 respectively to share second spot, with McIlroy a further stroke back in fourth spot after a four-under 68.

McIlroy's finish ensured he retained his place at the top of the season-long DP World Tour rankings and secured him the Harry Vardon Trophy for a fourth time, with the world No 1 also becoming only the second player in history to win the PGA Tour's FedExCup and the DP World Tour order of merit in the same season.

Relentless Rahm wins again in Dubai

Rahm made the dream start when he birdied his opening three holes but failed to get up and down from the greenside bunker to save par at the fourth, as Noren followed successive birdies from the second by holing from 30 feet at the sixth to briefly get within one of the lead.

Noren bogeyed the par-five next, where Rahm rolled in from 20 feet to briefly go three ahead when Hatton followed four birdies in his first eight holes with a three-putt bogey at the ninth.

Rahm reached the turn with a two-shot cushion over Noren, who birdied the ninth and halved the advantage with a 25-foot birdie at the 12th, with the Spaniard regaining that margin by draining a 30-footer at the par-three 13th.

Hatton posted back-to-back birdies from the 13th to pull level with Noren and added another at the par-five last, setting the clubhouse target at 18 under, as Rahm moved a big step closer to victory with a six-foot birdie at the 15th.

Noren birdied his penultimate hole and recovered from finding water off the final tee to save par at the last, keeping him alongside Hatton in tied-second, as Rahm negotiated the closing holes to complete a record fifth Rolex Series title and become the first three-time winner of the DP World Tour's season finale.

How McIlroy ended European No 1

McIlroy came into the week top of the season-long standings and one of seven players with a mathematical chance of ending as European No 1, with the four-time major winner going into the final day with a narrow lead in the projected standings over US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

The Northern Irishman birdied his opening two holes and cancelled out a dropped shot at the next by making a 10-foot birdie at the fifth, before responding to a dropped shot at the ninth by starting his back nine with a birdie.

Back-to-back birdies from the 14th saw McIlroy close on Rahm at the top of the leaderboard, with the world No 1 closing a final-round 68 with three pars to top the DP World Tour standings for the first time since 2015.

Fitzpatrick needed a top-two finish to have a chance of leapfrogging McIlroy, although dropped four shots in a five-hole stretch around the turn on his way to a one-over 73 and a share of fifth place with compatriot Tommy Fleetwood.

DP World Tour Championship leaderboard: Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton share Round 1 lead in Dubai

Rory mcilroy and jon rahm are also still within striking distance of the season-long points race.

DP World Tour Championship - Day One

Three major winners emerged as the favorites to win the DP World Tour Championship earlier this week, and one of them co-leads in Dubai after Round 1 as the DP World Tour season comes to a close. Matt Fitzpatrick, who has won two of the last six season-ending tournaments on this golf course, shot a 7-under 65 and is tied with Tyrrell Hatton after 18 holes of play.

For a while, it looked as if it might be even better than that. Fitzpatrick birdied his first five holes before cooling off and playing the next 13 in just 2 under. Still, it's an ideal start for the reigning U.S. Open champion as he looks to cap what has been a spectacular year with a second win and, potentially, his first Harry Vardon trophy, given to the player who tops the DP World Tour's season-long points race.

"I was laughing to be honest [about the hot start]," Fiztpatrick said. "I said to [caddie] Billy [Foster] yesterday, 'When we won in 2020, didn't we have four in a row?' Then we did four in a row and we laughed about that, then I made a fifth. It was a nice start to the day."

Seventh birdie of the day 💪 @MattFitz94 ties the lead. #DPWTC | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/i2isf1ahzP — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) November 17, 2022

Hatton, too, had a nice start to his day. He birdied four of the first seven, and then four more after that before making his only bogey of the day (a six on the 18th hole). He fell into a tie with Fitzpatrick because of a mistake at the last but is still in a good spot to get what would be his first win since Abu Dhabi at the start of 2021.

"I'm surprised to hear it's my lowest round to start with [at this event]," said Hatton. "Obviously it was a good day. Hit a lot of good shots. Putter was great. Kind of happy with that start. Although my head's a bit fried at the moment. My mind is just raging at the last there. But it is what it is."

Those two lead a resurgent Alex Noren by one and Adri Arnaus by two, but the bigger names and more feared players are further back. Tommy Fleetwood is 4 under; Jon Rahm is 2 under; pre-tournament favorite Rory McIlroy is 1 under; Shane Lowry is 1 over; and Viktor Hovland is 2 over. That's a lot of ground for nearly everyone in this group to make up on two Ryder Cup-level players like Fitzpatrick and Hatton.

"I play well here," said McIlroy. "[I was] 3 under through eight holes. I'm not -- it's not far away. It's not as if there's anything that I need to drastically work on. And yeah, thankfully there's three rounds left, go out and shoot a good one tomorrow and be ready for the weekend."

Rory McIlroy opened with 71 today at the DP World Tour Championship. Incredibly, it's his highest opening round score worldwide since a first round 73 at the Masters. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) November 17, 2022

The silver lining for McIlroy is two fold. One, there's plenty of time left to make up a lot of ground, and he's perhaps the best ever on this golf course (although Fitzpatrick is terrific as well). Two, McIlroy only narrowly trails Fitzpatrick for the season-long points race. Even if Fitzpatrick wins, McIlroy can still win the race by finishing second in this field.

Regardless, the tone has been set by two Englishmen for this week's tournament. Several other superstars are chasing, but running down one of Hatton and Fitzpatrick will be difficult enough. To get by two of them will be, if it happens, an extraordinary feat.

DP World Tour Championship Odds

  • Matt Fitzpatrick: +230
  • Tyrrell Hatton: +450
  • Rory McIlroy: +750
  • Alex Noren: 9-1
  • Jon Rahm: 9-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 11-1

Fitzpatrick and McIlroy have changed positions here. McIlroy was shorter than 3-1 to win coming into this week, and Fitzpatrick was 9-1 before his 65 in the first round. I'm hesitant about the players beyond Hatton because of how quality the top two are, and I'm glad to have picked Fitzpatrick at 9-1. However, if I have to take somebody outside of the top two, I'm going with Fleetwood, who is coming off a win last week in South Africa and just three back.

ISPS Handa Championship | Day 1 Highlights | DP World Tour

dp world tour day 1

After a month's stop, DP World Tour is back

A fter a month-long hiatus, the DP World Tour takes center stage once again with the ISPS Handa Championship. From April 25th to 28th, the tournament will be held in Gotemba, Japan, in the Shizuoka Prefecture, with eight Italians competing.

Alongside Matteo Manassero, who has already secured a victory at the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa this year, the lineup includes Guido Migliozzi, Edoardo Molinari, Renato Paratore, Francesco Laporta, Filippo Celli, Lorenzo Scalise, and Andrea Pavan.

All Italians will be present except for Francesco Molinari, who will be competing in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in the United States, partnered with Luke Donald, captain of the European Ryder Cup team.

Dp, results

Currently ranked 12th in the Race to Dubai, the DP World Tour's merit-based system, Manassero is coming off a 5th-place finish at the Hero Indian Open.

As one of the pre-tournament favorites, the 31-year-old Venetian will face stiff competition from the numerous Japanese players, exactly 45 of whom will be vying for glory on home soil. Among them are Keita Nakajima, the reigning champion of the Hero Indian Open, and Rikuya Hoshino, this year's Qatar Masters champion and currently second in the money list.

Additionally, Ryo Hisatsune will have a chance to shine. In 2023, he became the third Japanese golfer in history to win a title on the circuit after Hideki Matsuyama (Masters 2021) and Isao Aoki (Panasonic European Open 1983) thanks to his victory at the Open de France.

The event, now in its third edition and organized in collaboration with the Japan Golf Tour, will offer a prize purse of $2,250,000, with $382,500 going to the winner. The tournament will take place at the Taiheiyo Club Gotemba course, designed in 1977 by Shunsuke Kato and renovated in 2018, providing a scenic backdrop of Mount Fuji.

The course previously hosted the World Cup of Golf in 2001 and will host the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in October. Notably absent from the tournament will be Australian Lucas Herbert, the 2023 champion, who has since joined the LIV Golf, the Arabian Super League.

Among the prominent competitors are Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, who finished 12th at The Masters, and past winner Yuto Katsuragawa from Japan, who claimed victory in 2022.

Rory McIlroy seizes the day, wins Hero Dubai Desert Classic for fourth time

Rory McIlroy, DP World Tour, Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Call him the King of Dubai.

After temporarily relinquishing his throne at last week’s Dubai Invitational , Rory McIlroy bounced back with a vengeance Sunday, winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for a second consecutive year.

It is McIlroy’s fourth career victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, the most out of any player in the 35-year history of this marquee DP World Tour event.

“It is really cool. You know, I didn’t really think about [potentially being the fourth player to win this tournament] during the course of the round,” McIlroy said of his win.

“It was a really tricky day. It was hard to get it close and make a ton of birdies... but it’s a great start to the season.”

He shot a 2-under 70 to finish at 14-under overall, one stroke ahead of 30-year-old Pole Adrian Meronk .

His march to victory began at the 351-yard par-4 2nd hole, where McIlroy launched a perfect drive that landed in the heart of the green. He then two-putted for his first birdie of the day.

THAT drive https://t.co/myxRH2znKW pic.twitter.com/pr3gfHHjwl — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) January 21, 2024

That put some pressure on 54-hole leader Cameron Young , who then held a one-shot lead over McIlroy walking off the second green.

Young then stumbled, bogeying the fourth and sixth holes to quickly drop to one behind McIlroy.

McIlroy maintained his one-shot lead by the time this final pairing arrived at the 8th hole, a 459-yard dogleg right par-4. The Northern Irishman then rolled in a 31-footer for birdie to increase his lead by two. Then, at the 9th, McIlroy holed a 16-foot birdie putt to improve his lead further.

“The pivotal point for me came on the 8th and 9th hole,” McIlroy said.

“Making two threes there, that sort of set me up to try to control it on the way in.”

Funny enough, his birdie on the 9th would be his last of the day. He played very conservatively on the back nine, knowing he had the lead in hand. But he almost coughed it up at the par-5 13th, where he duck-hooked his tee shot in the native area well left of the fairway.

Rory McIlroy, DP World Tour, Hero Dubai Desert Classic

He even had to hit a provisional.

“I made that one blunder on 13 and made bogey there but felt like I steadied the ship well over the last few holes,” McIlroy said.

“It was one of those days where there was not a ton of fireworks just because the course was so difficult, but I held on as best as I could, and thankfully, no one around the top of the leaderboard made much of a run.”

After bogeying the 13th, McIlroy fell back to 14-under, but finished with four straight pars to hold on for the win. And considering where he began the day on Saturday, nobody would have ventured to guess that he had a chance to defend his title at the Emirates Club.

McIlroy entered the third round ten shots behind Young, but a 9-under 63 on Saturday vaulted him up the leaderboard and into the mix.

“I thought on Friday night, I thought 10-under for the weekend, I would have a really good chance to win,” McIlroy reasoned.

Rory McIlroy, DP World Tour, Hero Dubai Desert Classic

“I shot 11-under and ended up winning by one. I have played the game long enough to know how these things are going to go. Thankfully, I played the golf I needed to, and it was just incredible to get my fourth win here at the Emirates.”

The four-time major winner played terrific once again in the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating that his current form is excellent.

McIlroy’s next start will come at the beginning of February at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the second Signature Event of the 2024 PGA Tour season.

So, watch out, world; McIlroy is playing well, and he knows it, too.

“I know I’m playing good golf,” McIlroy said.

“There are still a couple of misses off the tee left. One got me on 18 last week [at the Dubai Invitational]. I missed a tee shot left on 13 today which sort of cost me a shot... A couple of little things still to work on, but these weeks are great. You learn a ton from them, and obviously great to get the competition and come out on top as well.”
