You will receive a confirmation email or text to confirm your assignments, and they will be added to League Lineup.

To view open assignments, CLICK HERE     to go to the officials page. "--Need Umpire--" indicates an open assignment.

Any questions, reach out by phone/text to Heather 812-589-1670.

Issues logging in to enter your team? (Update)

I'm aware that some (mostly new) admins that have been set up are not working on League Lineup.

Here is the information that LL/Stack Sports provided to help:

Newly added/updated admins will have to request a password reset link for them to access the account. They need to create a member account (MyLeagueLineUp account). Once a member account has been set up, including the password, they can go ahead and log in as admin using the same credentials.

How to create member account:

1. Go to your league's website 2. On the top right portion of the page, hover over 'LOGIN' then select 'MYLEAGUELINEUP' 2. Click 'Create Account' button 3. Fill out the form 4. Check your email (inbox and junk/spam mail) for temporary password. Note: In case you did not receive the email containing your temporary password in your inbox/spam/junk mail or it does not work, please use the 'Forgot your password' link in the 'Sign In' page. Also, Google Chrome is League LineUp's preferred browser. There is a chance that some features may not work on other browsers. Once they've created a member account and has set up their password, go back to the site and this time log in to the admin section Login > Administration > Sign in using the same email and password this will allow them to log in to your admin site.

*If you are still having issues, feel free to send me your roster info and I will get it uploaded for you.

2024 Games Entered

The games you scheduled this week are entered on the website. Please check your full schedule this weekend and report any changes needed no later than Sunday night. (Please text or email Heather at 812-589-1670 or [email protected]).

For games needing umpires, we will be reaching out to officials this week and will advise when games have been scheduled.

We're looking forward to the season!  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns now or as the season starts.

Game Scheduling Night - Tuesday, April 9th

All game scheduling will be completed on Tuesday, April 9th.

One coach from each participating team must attend that night, as you will be scheduling the dates and times of each of your games.

When and where will this be held?

All scheduling will take place at Stringtown fields (5800 N. New York Ave, Evansville 47711). Scheduling will take place inside.

  • Pony coaches should report for a 6:00 PM start time.
  • Bronco coaches should report for a 7:00 PM start time.
  • Mustang, Pinto , and Shetland coaches should report for an 8:00   PM start time.

What should I bring that night?

  • Contact info for head coach and (if applicable) assistant coaches or alternate contact person; This includes name, email and phone number(s) for each person
  • Field availability for your home field(s)
  • Personal availability of coach and players on your team
  • Physical calendar or printed copy of April/May/June calendar months
  • Pens or pencils
  • Any questions about rules, dates, the tournament, officials, etc.

Q:    I use my phone for scheduling everything. Do I still need to bring a calendar or printed copy of the April/May/June months?

A:   Yes.  Feel free to transfer the info to your electronic schedule at the end of the night, but trust our years of experience when we say it's easier to have a printed calendar as you're scheduling games. Before you leave that night, you will turn in a copy of your HOME scheduled games. That will be entered into League Lineup and be available for you to review a day or two later.

Q:    I don't have email, or I have email that I don't check. Can I just give you my phone number and you can just text me?

A:   No.  If you don't have email that will be checked regularly, please select another responsible person from your team's leadership group who is willing to take on that responsibility. The designated person(s) will be set up with access to allow for input of rosters and game scores/stats. In general, league-wide and division-level communication will also be by email.

Q:    How do I know my field availability?

A:    Before you come to scheduling night, please check with your park representative to verify if you are pre-assigned specific dates or times to play your home games.

Q:    What if I can't attend on Tuesday?

A:    If you can't attend, please make sure you have at least one responsible person attend who can schedule on your behalf. Each team doesn't need 5 people to attend, but in past years it has worked out well when each team has 2 representatives in attendance. (One can schedule home games, while the other schedules away games.)

** If you have any doubt that you or another rep from your team can attend, please reach out to Jeff Colvin ASAP at 812-746-7618.**

2024 Updating scores/stats

A quick reminder that the HOME team is responsible for updating a game's status/score and pitching info (if applicable).  Instructions for updating scores can be found in a guide under Forms - Rules & Information -- " How do I update game status and scores ?"  As the visiting team, it is still your responsibility to verify that the home team entered your pitching info correctly.

If a team has not entered their roster and you need to add pitching info, please type that information into the summary box on the score entry page until player detail is added.

2024 Reminder/Clarification on metal cleats

Parents and coaches, a reminder that metal cleats have never been allowed at any age level EXCEPT PONY (13-14).  At the Pony level, there are still some parks that prohibit metal spike cleats on the pitchers mound.  (Please check with the park/coach if there are questions, or look at the location on League LIneup for those where metal is not allowed on the mound.)

NO Pinto, Mustang or Bronco player may EVER wear metal-spiked cleats.

While we have specifically included this information on Bronco rules previously, we have now updated the Pinto and Mustang level rules to clarify this.

Attention Coaches/Parents re: Schedules

ALL DIVISION SCHEDULES ARE FINAL, and umpire assignments are in the process of being added.  Known umpire assignments will be completed by April 9th, and a 2022 revised EBUA officials list can be found HERE .

After April 9th --

For the HOME TEAM coach of a game:  At that time, any game where "Umpire needed" is listed instead of a name means that no one has signed up for your game.  If you have no officials assigned, you will need to reach out to find an official (using the EBUA list or any personal contacts).  If there is a single official listed, you can always reach out to the assigned umpire and ask if they know another official who would like to assist them.

At this point only Heather or Robb are able to enter/update game schedules and umpire assignments, so you will need to reach out to one of them (please use email [email protected], [email protected] AND/OR text 812-589-1670 and 812-228-7663)  to update the schedule if you are able to find someone.  EBUA members have been advised that they can check the ERBL website for assignments and contact the coach of the home team if they are interested in a game.  As the coach, you are responsible for securing umpire(s) if one or none have signed up, or if you're contacted that there is a conflict and they can no longer officiate your game.

**A reminder when you are contacting us about umpire assignments, schedule changes, etc:  Please give us your name, Team/Park, Division, and the game that you are referencing  (This is Keith with Stringtown Pony and I need to add umpire John Smith to our 5/3 home game at 7:30.  Or this is Steve with German 2 pinto team.  I need to move our 4/26 home game at 5:30 with Scott to 4/27 at 7:00 , still at German.)  Note that when you are moving games, as the home team coach you will be responsible for contacting any official(s) assigned to your game.  They should be given the first opportunity to officiate that new game, but if they can't you will need to find replacement(s).  Please relay that information in your email/text and it can be added/updated at the time your game is moved.

Coaches -- Next step (Enter your roster)

Your next step is to enter your roster into League Lineup.  You will need to log in as an admin using your email address.  This was set up during scheduling, so if you find that yours is NOT working, please text (preferred) 812-589-1670 or email Heather ( [email protected] ) with your team info (Division, Park, Team) and your email address.

When you select FORMS > RULES & INFORMATION, the first available item is the login guide.  Please take a look, as this guide will walk you through logging in as an administrator to enter your team info.  We're asking that rosters be entered before your first game, but no later than April 20. You must enter the full name of the player and their uniform number.  (If uniforms are not available until just before the first game, please go ahead and enter the full name and add the uniform number when it is available.)

Some additional information on umpires for your games --

Q - Who is responsible for securing an umpire for my game?

A - Any assignments completed at EBUA sign up night are added into League Lineup.  As the HOME TEAM COACH for a game, you are responsible for anything going forward.  If you have 1 umpire signed up, you need to reach out to that person and/or other officials to try and schedule a second person if needed.  If you have no umpires scheduled, again, you will need to reach out to umpires to see if anyone is available.  The EBUA umpire contact info list is available under Forms/Rules and Information.  The 2022 list can be found HERE .

**Please make sure when you view the schedule, you are looking at the HOME team which should match the VENUE listed.  We've had some confusion since the visitor team is listed first.  **

Q - What if I need to reschedule/postpone a game for any reason?

A - As the HOME TEAM COACH, you are responsible for contacting any umpires that have been scheduled.  For postponed games due to weather or rescheduled/postponed games we suggest calling (rather than emailing).  Please leave voicemail and ask for a confirmation from the official to verify the message was received.  If the official shows up because you didn't call... or didn't call in time... your park owes that official a show-up fee.

Q - I am an official/parent of an official and I need to let someone know that I have a game scheduled that I can't make, or would like to sign up for a game that is available.  Who do I contact?

A - You will need to reach out to the coach of the home team for the game in question.  They can pass along the changes to an ERBL admin who can update the assignment on League Lineup.  When you select the team to view in League Lineup, the coach/coaches contact number(s) will be listed.

Q - I'm a coach and was contacted by an official/parent of an official about a schedule change (can't make the game, or wants to schedule an open game).  Who do I contact to update the information in League Lineup?

A - Right now, please contact Heather at [email protected]  so she can make that change for you.  You will receive an email back to confirm.  Make sure you let us know the division, date/time of game and who you are/what team you are with.  When life gets crazy, it's easier if all the info is there in one email.

2024 - How do I update game status and scores in League Lineup?

We've created a step by step PDF guide to entering your scores using the new "Score Reporting" function that doesn't require you to log in as an administrator!

The file can be found under FORMS - RULES & INFORMATION, but you can also view/download the file from this link:  How do I update game status and scores?

2024 - Rainouts, reschedules, cancellations

Remember that the HOME TEAM is responsible for calling umpires if the game is cancelled/rescheduled/rained out/otherwise needing to be delayed or moved.  If you fail to notify umpires TIMELY you will be responsible for the show-up fee.  Timely means as soon as possible, but should be at least 2 hours before scheduled game start.  Many officials live 30-45 minutes from the locations where games are held, and they are trained to arrive 15-30 minutes before a scheduled game (some arrive even earlier).  Please be courteous and notify as soon as possible through a phone call or text.  If you are not able to speak to the official (and have to text or leave voice mail), please try to follow up again if you have not received any type of confirmation/acknowledgement within 30 minutes.

When rescheduling, please first contact the original umpires that were scheduled.  Again, it is the HOME TEAM that is responsible for securing the umpires on any rescheduled game.

No coaches have access to modify schedules.  If you need a game date or time changed (or a new game added) you must contact Heather (Text 812-589-1670 or email [email protected] )  to make those changes

Reminder - No head first slides at ANY base allowed**

For all divisions EXCEPT Pony, as in regular season play:

Just a reminder that any player that slides HEAD FIRST into any base WILL BE CALLED OUT.  Diving back to a base is permissible, sliding head first is NOT.

This rule applies to Pinto/Mustang/Bronco ONLY.

Pitch Counts

The general rule that will always apply when recording pitch counts is:

When a pitcher pitches to his final batter, his official pitch count and number of pitches used to determine days rest will be the first pitch of that final batter.

So whether that final batter is the first, second, fourth or last batter of the inning (or last of the game), you will record your pitcher's first ball thrown to him/her as the official pitch count.

Rest is calculated as per calendar day. (PONY rule)  What does a "day of rest" mean?

ERBL has always defined a "day of rest" as 24 hours and we're going to stay with that definition for the 2022 season, as we did in 2021.

*Rest is calculated as per calendar day.  ERBL is defining calendar day as 24 hours from the START time of the first game pitched.

As an example:

If you pitched at any time in a game that started at 6 PM on Monday:

  • If you need 1 day rest you may pitch at/after 6 PM  on Tuesday   • If you need 2 days rest you may pitch at/after 6 PM on Wednesday   • If you need 3 days rest you may pitch at/after 6 PM  on Thursday   • If you need 4 days rest you may pitch at/after 6 PM on Friday

No pitcher shall appear in a game as a pitcher for three consecutive days, regardless of pitch count. (PONY rule)

No pitcher may pitch three (3) consecutive days. So if your pitcher throws 20 pitches in a game Monday and 20 pitches in a game Tuesday he may NOT pitch at all on Wednesday.  (This applies to any series of consecutive days.)

We've added info to the pitching rules on the website.  View/download them HERE .

**This change to the definition also means that the pitch tracker reports (showing what days pitchers are next eligible) that are included in League Lineup will not be accurate .  The reports are set up based on the Pitch Smart rules that define a calendar day differently than we're using.  We don't have a way to redefine those rules in the report coding to match our 24 hour rule.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. **

2022 Bat standards

For the 2022 season, the ERBL has adopted a new 'any legal bat' rule.  The full guidelines can be viewed/downloaded HERE (linked to Forms>Rules & Information).

Evansville Baseball Faces Indiana in Road Trip Opener

The University of Evansville baseball team is embarking on a five-game road trip, starting with a matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington. The Purple Aces head into the game with an 18-17 record, coming off a dominant series against Illinois State where they outscored their opponents 28-7.

  • University of Evansville's pitching staff allowed the lowest three-game run total since 2020 with only 7 runs against Illinois State.
  • Senior outfielder Kip Fougerousse, a former IU player, has been a standout performer for the Purple Aces this season, boasting a .322 batting average with 8 home runs and 31 RBI.
  • University of Evansville has won eight of its last nine games, with graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger leading the offensive charge with a .383 batting average.
  • Indiana Hoosiers, with a 20-16 record, showcase a strong offensive lineup, led by sophomore infielder Tyler Cerny batting .348 with 15 doubles, 6 home runs, and 39 RBI.

The upcoming game between University of Evansville and Indiana Hoosiers promises an exciting matchup, with both teams looking to continue their winning momentum in this interconference battle.

As the University of Evansville baseball team faces off against Indiana Hoosiers, the game not only marks a competitive clash but also a homecoming for standout player Kip Fougerousse, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this compelling matchup.

How Harrison baseball is proving it's an SIAC contender this spring: 'Our kids believe'

evansville indiana travel baseball teams

EVANSVILLE — Harrison's baseball team celebrated in jubilation after notching the final out last week against North.

The 6-3 victory was the program's first win against the Class 4A No. 5 Huskies since 2019 and its first Southern Indiana Athletic Conference road triumph since May 10, 2022. Although the Warriors then dropped a one-run game to Class 2A No. 4 North Posey the next afternoon, they bounced back with another SIAC road win on Thursday against No. 8 Castle.

Harrison (6-4) has won three SIAC games this spring, matching their total from the last two years. The Warriors have proved they can be conference contenders by beating two of the favorites, North and Castle.

Evansville sports: Bosse's Enlow Field will be upgraded with a new turf football field and stadium roof

"You ask most people, those are two of the better teams in the conference with the arms they have on the mound and the offense they have," coach Houston Dillman said. "We've shown we can play against those guys, and our kids believe in it. They've put in a lot of work in the last three to four years to get themselves to this point."

"We're building stuff (at Harrison)," senior Kaleb Bard added. "Last year, we had zero seniors, but this year we have a lot. As we continued to grow, this team continued to grow."

There are many factors in Harrison's success. Its bats have been hot as it has recorded five or more hits in all but one game. Bard, a Kentucky Wesleyan signee, is strong as the designated hitter and is riding a seven-game hit streak. Senior Levi Thomas, who signed with Olney Central, has five doubles and three in the last two games.

The pitching and defense also has been strong. Thomas has produced some dominant outings on the mound while the Warriors' outfielders rob extra-base hits and the infield turns double plays. There's also been much praise for sophomore catcher Mason Baker.

"He does a great job behind the plate, we have great arms and our defense has been good this year," Dillman said. "If we're going to stay in games, we've got to throw strikes, make the routine plays and get timely hits. The defense is a big point for us, and we've got things we need to clean up. But we'll get back to work and keep taking strides in it."

IHSAA sports: The new reclassifications are out. Here's how Southern Indiana schools are affected.

One of Harrison's biggest keys to staying in contention is minimizing mistakes. The Warriors committed four errors on Tuesday against Memorial, and they proved costly as they fell 9-4 in their first SIAC loss of the season. They hadn't committed an error in the previous three games.

"There's a common denominator between our wins and our losses," senior Nolan Doan said. "When we win, we do everything right. When we lose, we have an error here or there. We can't let them snowball. But we've got to avoid blowup innings and we'll be fine."

Success is trickling in for Harrison athletics this school year, from boys basketball winning its first sectional title in 11 years to two individuals combining for three city track and field titles last Friday . Seniors Kaiden Bard and Eli Speer and junior Brooks Thomas were key contributors in basketball. Now they want to carry that success to the diamond, where they haven't won a conference title since 2010 or a sectional since 2016.

"They won in basketball, they want to win in baseball," Dillman said. "It credits all the coaches there at Harrison and the administration in what's going on. At the end of the day, they've got to believe. We're kind of mentors for them, and we just got to keep pushing them in the right way."

10 high school baseball teams to watch across Southwestern Indiana in 2024

EVANSVILLE — The calendar turning to March isn't reserved for basketball. Look to the diamond.

The 2024 high school baseball season begins this week. The postseason will arrive on Memorial Day weekend before we realize it. Many of the top programs in Southern Indiana reside in our corner of the state with a propensity for multiple weekends stays in the tournament. Who might be the top contenders this spring?

Here are 10 teams, listed in alphabetical order, to watch this season in the Evansville-area.

More: 65 high school baseball players to watch in Southwestern Indiana in 2024

Barr-Reeve Vikings

The Vikings advanced to the Class 1A state championship last year. A return trip isn't out of the question with nearly the entire starting lineup intact.

To advance deep in the tournament, you need multiple quality pitchers. Seth Wagler and Jacob Pauw fit the description after a combined 15-2 record last season; Wagler struck out 10 in the state championship loss to Lafayette Central Catholic. The lineup has potential high-impact hitters at multiple spots. The Vikings are one of the early favorites to advance from the south.

Castle Knights

Pencil the Knights down for a bunch of wins and competing for the SIAC and sectional titles.

It feels straightforward with this program, and the pieces are there again. Of course, the major topic is life without ace Cameron Tilly, who is now in the Southeastern Conference . There is still a Division I arm to lead the staff (Will Coleman, Missouri) and a Division I outfielder (Noah Drake, Indiana) to aid the lineup. The underclassmen thrown into the fire last year are also a year older and a year better.

Central Bears

The Bears would be the wildcard pick among contenders in the SIAC.

Following an 18-win season in year one for Robbie Frank, Central returns enough talent at key spots to remain squarely in the mix. Marshall recruit Josh Ferguson gives the Bears an ace. The outfield has a pair of all-conference caliber players in JJ Clark and Jaxon Henke. In total, Central has six returning starters and its best on a single night will be tough.

Forest Park Rangers

The Rangers' ceiling puts them among the top teams in Class 2A. Do they reach that potential?

A 22-win season a year ago ended quickly and surprisingly in the opening game of the sectional. There are spots to fill now including the No. 1 spot in the rotation , but Forest Park's strengths are also clear. Western Kentucky recruit Reid Howard has All-State potential in the infield. There is also ample depth on the mound with Joel Bueltel and Jaxon Lueken, plus an experienced senior class. A lot of eyes on Forest Park this year.

Jasper Wildcats

Keep it simple, folks. Never count out this program and coach Terry Gobert.

The reasoning this year is straightforward. The Wildcats will be tough when Andrew Noblitt is on the mound. Will Wallace and Kai Kunz provide impact bats and pitching depth. There will be upperclassmen at nearly every other position. The SIAC is stacked at the top, but every contender knows better than to underestimate Jasper. The Wildcats rarely beat themselves.

Memorial Tigers

Memorial has not won the SIAC title in baseball since 2018. Might this be the year?

The high-impact players are numerous, beginning with three Division I recruits in Matthew Fisher (Indiana), Thomas Lynch (Purdue) and Simon Schulz (Evansville). The former proved in the postseason last year how tough the Tigers will be when he is pitching. A couple of things to settle before May: who is their No. 2 on the mound? does the lineup find more consistency?

North Huskies

On paper, this might be the team to beat in the SIAC. The key will be what the Huskies get from the rotation.

The offense doesn't have the pop of recent years but is full of speed, contact and experience. The prime example is Indiana recruit Cole Decker in the leadoff spot. As with most years, North's success relies on the mound. There are known quantities with seniors Bryce Minton and Chris Cranick. The wildcard is 6-10 junior Kellen English. The Indiana commit raises the Huskies' ceiling by tapping into his potential.

North Posey Vikings

If you want to see offense, take a trip to Poseyville this spring.

The Vikings' top four hitters are back from a 19-win campaign that ended in the sectional championship game. Easton Luigs is on the shortlist for top returners in the PAC. Throw in two-way player Ethan Mansfield, plus Colby Angel and Logan Simmons. North Posey should play a role in deciding the conference and sectional title if it finds pitching depth or top-to-bottom production in the lineup.

Princeton Tigers

Need wildcard potential in the PAC? Don't overlook the Tigers.

A young team won 18 games last season and only two contributors graduated. Jarrett Kinder and Ryne Wilhite were All-PAC infielders a year ago. The latter was also Princeton's top arm with a 1.11 earned run average in 50 innings. The Tigers need the rest of the roster, notably a large junior class, to make a leap. There is intrigue here though.

Southridge Raiders

Last year showed the staying power of this program.

Two years removed from winning the state championship , the Raiders only just won the outright PAC title before beating county rival Jasper in the sectional. Six starters are back including the top three hitters. A lone concern is finding a true ace. There is a candidate in Evan McClain plus the return of all-conference infielders Hudson Allen and Blake Taylor. It wouldn't be a shock to see Gene Mattingly have Southridge competing for titles again.

Honorable mention: Tecumseh, Harrison, South Knox

Kim Caldwell hires Nolan Harvath as director of sports performance for Lady Vols

evansville indiana travel baseball teams

Lady Vols basketball coach Kim Caldwell has hired a new director of sports performance.

Nolan Harvath, who has worked with the West Virginia strength and conditioning staff since December 2020, was announced as the new director of sports performance for Lady Vols basketball on Thursday. Harvath and Caldwell previously worked together at Division II Glenville (W.Va.) State.

"I have had the pleasure of working with Nolan in the past, and he knows what we are trying to accomplish," Caldwell said in a school release. "He sees the vision we have and is dedicated to making sure we are the hardest-working team in the country. I know he is going to show up to work focused on ensuring our program is getting better every single day."

Harvath replaces Bryan Tatum, who was not retained from the previous staff.

Harvath most recently worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at WVU, working with the football team since spring 2022. He was originally hired to help with the baseball and golf programs. Prior to his stint at West Virginia, Harvath was the director of strength and condition at Glenville State from 2018-20. He also served as assistant athletic director from 2019-20.

Harvath, a Fairmont, West Virginia native, graduated in 2013 with a degree in exercise science from the University of Southern Indiana, where he played on the men's soccer team. He earned his master's in athletic coaching education from WVU in 2016.

He began his career during his senior year at USI, working at the Sports Acceleration Center located in Evansville, Indiana. He then worked as a strength and conditioning coach at the high school level from 2013-17 at his alma mater, East Fairmont High, and Morgantown High. He also worked with Pro Performance in Morgantown.

Harvath then went on to be a strength and conditioning intern at WVU and worked with the football team. He was also a consultant for the University of Charleston baseball team from 2016-20.

UE Baseball has one of longest win streaks in country

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The University of Evansville Baseball team is on a roll. They currently have one of the longest win streaks in college baseball, winning 8 straight games, with two conference series sweeps in there as well, and a win over IU. We last checked in with the team a couple of weeks ago when the win streak was just beginning, and since then, they have done nothing but win, so what’s been going so well for this Aces team.

“We’re playing great baseball right now,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll. “I think in all three facets. It starts on the mound. I think our starting pitching has been outstanding, they’ve been giving us a chance each and every game, and then our offense can go get it for us. We’ve put some crooked numbers from an offensive standpoint, but all in all, our pitching has been a lot better over the past month and that’s why we’re stacking the wins.”

One of the pitchers who has really settled in over this stretch, Donovan Schultz, who has 18 strikeouts over his last 21 innings pitched. Over this past stretch, this team has felt good.

“We’re having fun right now for sure,” said Senior Pitcher Donovan Schultz. “Winning is a lot of fun. When you’re able to string together eight in a row like we have here, it’s a lot of fun. People are happy to show up to practice, happy to be in the dugout, bring some energy during the games, so it’s been a lot of fun. We always knew we were capable of putting a lot of wins together, but there was a point about a month ago where we were on the other side, we were suffering a bit of a losing streak. I think, that’s something that we kept telling ourselves, ‘we’re capable of turning it around, we’re capable of getting a streak going in the other direction.’”

The Aces travel to face the Purdue Boilermakers on Wednesday at 5!

Indiana baseball whiffs on scoring chances, falls to Evansville

090A9206.jpeg

After showing serious signs of progress April 12-14 versus Penn State , Indiana baseball crashed back down to earth Tuesday night. The Hoosiers fell 5-4 to the University of Evansville at Bart Kaufman Field, as many of Indiana’s pitching struggles resurfaced and the offense failed to capitalize on scoring chances.

Indiana pitchers walked eight batters and hit three, leading to three of Evansville’s five runs. Senior right-hander Jack Moffitt was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on one hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch while recording just two outs between the third and fourth innings.

Indiana head coach Jeff Mercer said neither Moffitt nor starting pitcher Ethan Phillips, who labored through 2 2/3 innings while allowing one run, two walks and two hit-by-pitches, performed well.

“They weren’t in the zone consistently,” Mercer said postgame. “I didn’t think they were terribly competitive.”

Junior right-hander Julian Tonghini worked out of Moffitt’s mess, stranding a pair of Evansville baserunners after three men crossed the plate in the fourth inning. As the game went on, Indiana’s bullpen settled down and kept Evansville from extending its advantage.

Sophomore outfielder Devin Taylor’s offensive woes continued Tuesday. He went hitless for the third time in four games, but no at-bat ended worse than when he bounced into an inning-ending double play in the fifth inning, the second such rally-killer in as many innings for Indiana.

After entering the bottom of the fifth down 5-1, Indiana plated two runs and looked to either tie the game or take the lead, but Taylor faltered after being moved down in the lineup on account of his recent struggles.

Despite Taylor failing to keep Indiana’s midgame rally going, the bullpen held serve, setting the table for a Hoosier comeback as junior outfielder Nick Mitchell cut the Purple Aces’ lead to one with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

Junior outfielder Carter Mathison advanced to third base on the play, representing the tying run. However, Indiana’s rally fell short as sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny grounded out to his opposite number to end the inning, spiking his batting helmet in frustration. Cerny accounted for three of Indiana’s six runners left on base.

Although Indiana out-hit Evansville seven to four, the Hoosiers repeatedly faltered in high-leverage at-bats. Mercer cited Indiana failing to execute its offensive game plan and taking hittable fastballs as chief causes of his frustration.

“Offensively, when teams are giving you an opportunity to go and you don’t do those things, you’re not good,” Mercer said. “When those opportunities are given, you don’t get to guess and you don’t get re-dos.”

After Tuesday’s loss, Indiana is projected to drop to around 80th in the RPI , well outside contention for the 64-team NCAA Tournament field. It is yet another entry in the growing list of bad losses suffered by Indiana this season, filed among home losses to Purdue University Fort Wayne, Illinois State University and Butler University. The Hoosiers are 2-5 in Quad 3 games and 10-6 in Quad 4 games, which will negatively impact their postseason chances.

Related COLUMN: Indiana baseball is teetering on the precipice of a lost season Baseball is a silly game. Indiana head coach Jeff Mercer says it all the time. Some days, the deck is stacked against your team and there’s nothing you can do. On other days, everything you touch turns to gold.

“Earlier in the year, we weren’t good enough on the mound,” Mercer said. “Today, it was not (the pitchers’) fault. It was squarely on the offense. We’re at the top of every offensive category in the Big Ten. But dammit, we weren’t today.”

Now 20-17 on the season, the Hoosiers will look to rebound Friday-Sunday at Minnesota against a sub-.500 Golden Gophers squad that is just 3-6 in Big Ten play. Games are scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT on Friday, 3 p.m. EDT on Saturday and 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday, all available on Big Ten Plus.
