Caminar sobre un glaciar en Noruega [Nigardsbreen]

En el mes de agosto del año 2018 hicimos un Roadtrip por Noruega . Una de las excursiones más excitantes fue la que hicimos por el Parque Nacional Jostedalsbreen . Más concretamente el hiking por el glaciar Nigardsbreen con crampones . ¡Qué emocionante caminar sobre un glaciar en Noruega !

Es ya nuestro séptimo día de viaje por tierras noruegas. Partimos de Borgund, de cuya increible iglesia te hablaré en otro post. El camino en coche es espectacular. La verdad es que conducir por Noruega es toda una experiencia porque los paisajes son un espectáculo. Te recomiendo sin lugar a dudas que conviertas tu viaje a Noruega en un Roadtrip y que alquiles un coche. Así podrás ir dónde y cuándo quieras a la velocidad que te apetezca. Teníamos ya reservada nuestra excursión para hacer trekking (o hiking) por el glaciar Nigardsbreen y habíamos quedado con el guía a las 15 horas. Madre mía qué nervios…. ¡Íbamos a caminar sobre un glaciar ! Por cierto… ¿no sabes qué es hiking? Te lo cuento más abajo.

🛸 Cómo llegar al graciar Nigardsbreen

Nos dirigimos hacia el Parque Nacional de Jostedalsbreen y más concretamente a una de sus lenguas, la Nigardsbreen . La carretera discurre al lado de un río de aguas glaciares color turquesa. Los fiordos y todo el agua que vemos hoy es de este color. Precioso.

Llegamos al Centro de Visitantes Breheimsenteret . Está abierto desde mayo hasta septiembre y dentro hay una tienda de regalos, una cafetería y una oficina de información turística. También pueden sacarse aquí los tickets para las excursiones aunque nosotras ya los habíamos sacado por Internet. Por cierto, si quieres mirar algo en Internet aprovecha aquí, tienen WiFi .

No te pierdas las vistas del glaciar desde la gran cristalera del Centro de Visitantes. Se ve una gran lengua de hielo que baja entre las montañas y que te pone aún más nerviosa. ¡Madre mía, que ganas de empezar!

Aquí tienen un buen parking y se puede dejar el coche. Si optas por esta opción deberás caminar unos tres kilómetros hasta el siguiente parking, punto de partida de las excursiones. Nosotras decidimos ir con el coche hasta este segundo párking pero tuvimos que pagar 60 NOK (algo menos de 6 euros) porque este pequeño tramo de carretera es de peaje.

Llegamos pronto y nos damos una vuelta viendo el ambiente. Hay bastante gente. Algunos van por libre y otros esperan para empezar su excursión guiada. Nosotras no sabemos muy bien si debemos esperar aquí al guía o ir hasta el pie del glaciar , así es que preguntamos a uno de los guías que hay por aquí y nos dice que aunque es pronto podemos ir subiendo.

Desde aquí hay también dos opciones para llegar al glaciar. Una es ir bordeando la orilla del lago Nigardsbrevatnet . Te llevará entre 45 y 60 minutos. Otra opción es ir en barquita hasta la otra orilla. Esta es la opción que nosotras elegimos cuando sacamos los tickets por Internet.

Llegamos al otro lado del lago y comienza la parte emocionante. La ruta discurre entre rocas así es que no hay un camino propiamente dicho. Algunas empresas que realizan excursiones ponen conos que has de seguir pero otras, como fue nuestro caso, no ponen nada. Eso sí, toda la ruta está marcada con unas señales rojas que debes ir siguiendo.

El río se cruza por varios puntos a través de pasarelas de madera pero para mí el momento álgido de la rutita hasta el pie del glaciar llegó cuando ante mí veo aparecer un puente colgante de madera que… bueno, creo que me puse blanca como la pared. De hecho, cuando reservamos la excursión escogimos el barquito porque yo había visto en Internet este puente y pensé que cogiendo el bote me libraría de cruzarlo pero…

No! Allí estaba ante mí. De madera. Viejo. Largo. Con un río pequeño pero enfurecido debajo. Ay madre…. ¿mi vértigo me permitirá cruzarlo?

Miré al glaciar que ya estaba a pocos metros y pensé que tenía que llegar sí o sí y no tenía otra forma de hacerlo así es que allí que fui. En la foto me estoy riendo pero es por no llorar…. Qué mal rato. Eso sí, también te digo que desde entonces mi vértigo ha mejorado muchísimo y ya no tengo tanto miedo a las alturas. Va en serio, ¿eh?

Salvado este, para mí, importante escollo, seguimos caminando entre piedras para llegar al pie del glaciar .

❄ Excursión sobre el glaciar Nigardsbreen con crampones

Y por fin llegamos hasta el comienzo de nuestra excursión sobre el glaciar . En un pequeño puestecillo al lado izquierdo de la lengua del glaciar hay una chica que tiene toda la pinta de ser guía así es que le preguntamos y efectivamente. Mientras llega el resto del grupo nos da un arnés a cada una para que nos lo vayamos poniendo. También nos entrega unos crampones y nos dice que nos esperemos a que venga el resto y que entonces nos explicará cómo ponerlos.

Aprovechamos el rato para hacer millones y millones de fotos. El paisaje para alguien que nunca ha estado por estas tierras (lo más al norte que yo había estado hasta ahora era Holanda ), es impresionante. Impresionante por diferente, por grande, por salvaje, … A mí me tiene alucinada.

Supongo que ya sabes que en Noruega hace fresco hasta en verano. Este día era 25 de agosto y mira mi atuendo. Te aseguro que no me sobraba nada.

Ya han llegado todos y nuestra guía nos enseña a ponernos los crampones y nos une a todos con una cuerda. Nos da algunas instrucciones sobre seguridad y listo. Ha llegado el momento ¡Allá vamos!

Los primeros pasos sobre el hielo del glaciar son temerosos a pesar de llevar los crampones pero pronto te das cuenta de que eso se agarra muy bien y que si no haces nada raro es bastante seguro.

Poco a poco empezamos a ascender. Si uno se para, todos nos paramos. La guía va explicando algunas cosas pero nosotras vamos bastante retrasadas y no nos enteramos de muchas cosas. De todos modos yo voy flipando y solo con lo veo ya me vale. Jajajaja.

El hiking sobre el glaciar dura unos 45 minutos aunque a mí me parecieron 5. El tiempo se pasa volando entre hielo de un color azul intenso y agujeros cuyo fondo no alcanzas a ver (aquí te tiemblan un poquito las piernas 🙂 Caminamos muy despacito siguiendo el ritmo de la cordada y parando de vez en cuando para hacer fotos. Yo me habría tirado aquí 4 horas más pero tenemos que bajar.

Te voy a dejar un video que grabé mientras caminaba sobre el glaciar con los crampones y que es malísimo. No lo grabé para ponerlo en el blog pero a lo mejor te sirve para hacerte una idea de lo que es andar sobre un glaciar. Una vez llegamos abajo devolvemos todo el material que nos entregaron, nos despedimos de la guía y de nuestros compañeros de excursión y hacemos otro millón de fotos más. Aunque no las necesitaré para recordarlo porque las imágenes se han quedado grabadas en mi retina para siempre.

🤔 ¿Merece la pena pagar por un hiking sobre un glaciar?

Sí. Rotundamente. De hecho si vuelvo a ir a Noruega y tengo la posibilidad contrataré otro pero de más duración. Noruega no es barato y cada cosa que contratas te cuesta un dinerillo pero hay algunas actividades de guiri como esta que tienes que hacerla sí o sí.

⛷ ¿Es difícil caminar con crampones sobre un glaciar?

Pues mira, la excursión que nosotras hicimos es una excursión recomendada para adultos y niños desde los 8 años.

Por mucho que a mí me diera la impresión de que yo era una avezada alpinista y que lo que estaba haciendo era algo digno de contar a mis nietos en realidad es un simple hiking. ¿Que qué es un hiking ? Pues significa «senderismo», más fácil que lo que conocemos como trekking. Si tienes curiosidad puedes mirar la diferencia entre trekking y hiking aquí .

Teniendo cuidado con el material, no haciendo el cabra y siguiendo las instrucciones que te dan antes de comenzar, no hay peligro y es muy fácil de seguir.

Prácticamente siempre hago mis reservas con Booking porque me parece rápido, fiable y nunca nunca he tenido ningún problema.

Hola la excursión tiene incluida la ida y vuelta en barca, según parece, ¿Tuvisteis problemas para subiros porque hay gente que dice que hay problema pero parece que solo si no vas en grupo, cogiendo la excursión entera barco con guía no hay problema verdad?

Hola Bea. La verdad es que nosotras no tuvimos ningún problema. También es verdad que cuando fuimos no había mucha gente. De hecho no había cola ni teníamos a nadie delante. Esperamos unos minutos, vino el barquero, nos subimos y listo. Ningún problema.

DÍA 6: Glaciar de Nigardsbreen.

Hoy vamos a vivir una nueva aventura noruega: realizaremos un hiking (que no trecking) por el glaciar de Nigardsbreen . Hay varios niveles de dificultad en las caminatas entre las que elegir, desde muy fáciles a avanzadas. Desde mayo a octubre, todos los días salen expediciones por el glaciar y a diferentes partes del mismo. Las caminatas cortas se pueden hacer especialmente entre julio y agosto.

Madrugamos para estar a las 09:15 en el Centro de Visitantes de Jostedal donde compramos la entrada para el “ Blue Ice Family Hike ” de 1 hora que vamos a realizar. El precio es de 110€ por persona, algo caro para nuestro road trip lowcost pero merece mucho la pena.

Desde aquí tomamos un tramo de carretera que se dirige al, muy cercano, camping de Jostedalbreen . Casi pegado a este camping os encontraréis con una carretera de peaje de 3 Km donde solo se admiten tarjetas de crédito (4 €) y tienes que pagar sí o sí para que se levante la barrera y poder pasar. Llegamos al lago donde aparcamos en el parking de forma totalmente gratuita (¡ya hemos pagado el peaje!) y cogemos una barca (4 € por persona ida y vuelta) que nos deja a 15 minutos de la lengua de hielo. También se puede ir andando bordeando el lago, pero la caminata es de más de media hora sólo hasta el punto donde te deja la barca.

Aquí empieza la ruta andando hacia el glaciar , en la que para no perderse es imprescindible seguir los conos amarillos (sólo si has contratado el hiking, sí vas por libre se supone que no debes seguir este camino). Por el camino h ay escaleras, barandillas, puentes colgantes de madera y cuerdas que nos ayudan a recorrer el trayecto de forma cómoda.

Por fin llegamos al inicio de nuestro hiking (y justo vemos cómo se desprende un trozo de glaciar y baja por el río hasta el lago).

Nos colocan los crampones sobre las botas para que nuestras pisadas en el hielo agarren bien y nos atan con una cuerda para mantener el grupo unido y seguro.

A parte del guía (súper simpático) nos acompaña otra pareja. Al principio da un poco de miedo, pero enseguida quedas fascinado por la belleza y sobre todo por el azul del glaciar.

La hora se pasa volando y te quedas con ganas de más. ¡La próxima vez haremos el hiking de 5 horas!

Después de nuestra experiencia en el glaciar, continuamos la ruta del día hacia la iglesia de madera de Urnes , la cual nos quedamos sin ver porque justo cuando llegamos al puerto para coger el ferry que te lleva hasta ella, estaba saliendo y el tiempo de espera para coger el siguiente es demasiado largo. Decidimos sacrificarlo y continuar hasta el Boyabreen Glacier para echar unas fotos antes de que empiece a llover.

La última parada es para subir al Loen Skylift , el teleférico con más pendiente del mundo . Permite ascender los 1.000 metros de acantilado que parten de un fiordo, hasta la cima donde en verano se accede a una zona de senderismo, y en invierno se puede esquiar con unas magníficas vistas. El precio por persona es de 50€ para el trayecto de ida y vuelta . Sin embargo, no para de llover y no merece la pena. Si mañana hace mejor día, haremos un nuevo intento.

Hoy dormimos en el Hjelle Hotel (desayuno incluido).

Hola! En primer lugar me ha gustado mucho vuestro post! Os quería preguntar si creéis que el hiking de 1 hora (o el de 2) resultarían muy dificultosos para dos personas en la treintena que no hacen prácticamente deporte jaja… Es que estoy con la duda de hacerlo o no pero no quiero quedarme con las ganas… Recomendáis reservarlo con antelación o no hace falta (por si sale un día lluvioso) Graciaaaas!

Podréis hacerlo sin problema chicos además merece mucho la pena, es una pasada animaos !!!!!

Gracias por los ánimos! Hicisteis el Short o el Extra-short? Es que el blue ice que comentáis se ve que ya no existe jeje

Creo recordar que hicimos el de 1 hora, pq el de 3 horas que era el siguiente no nos daba tiempo íbamos muy apurados con el road trip. Hay que estar allí 1 hora antes y tal el camino es largo hasta llegar al glaciar recomiendo vayáis en barca.

Nigardsbreen glacier walk

Nigardsbreen is an easy accessible glacier in the Jostedalsbreen national park.

Family friendly glacier trekking

To get here, you will drive through the spectacular landscape of fjords and mountains. You will meet your guide at the parking lot by the glacier. During the walk towards the glacier, the guide will talk about the history of the glacier and how the glaciers have formed the landscape we know today in the western part of Norway. When we are on the ice we will all use an ice axe, crampons and we will be attached to each other with a rope.

Minimum age 12 years .

Highly qualified guides

All Breogfjell Mountain Guides are qualified IFMGA Mountain Guides (called “Tindevegledere” in Norwegian) or approved in Norway by Norsk Fjellsportforum. They also know the area like their own pocket.

Equipment and clothing

• A small backpack (20-40L)
• Mountain boots
• Clothing for a day in the mountains: insulating underwear/wool, wind/waterproof clothing
• Insulation jacket like down, primaloft or wool is nice to have when we eat lunch
• Thin gloves/mittens
• Thermos with warm beverage and lunch
• Sunglasses!

Accomodation and food

Food It will be possible to buy food in nearby foodshops the day before. You must bring your own packed lunch.

Visitor’s & Hiker’s Guide To The Impressive Nigardsbreen Glacier

The Nigardsbreen Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in Norway. Hike to its viewpoint or book a guided glacier-walking tour to see this stunning ice scenery .

12 things to know about visiting the Nigardsbreen Glacier in Norway

I have to admit, I was a bit on the fence about hiking to the Nigardsbreen glacier. I knew this is a touristy spot and a popular day hike in Norway . After a streak of circumstances, I didn’t start hiking late into the afternoon.

By then all tourists, tour groups, and boats were gone and even though it was the height of the season we were the only other car in the parking lot. My friend and I ended up hiking to Nigardsbreen Glacier’s viewpoint in complete solitude.

If you would like to add this place to your Norway itinerary then I recommend that you read my article about everything there is to know about this hike.

1. Nigardsbreen hike: the stats

• Time required :  2 hours
• Total Ascent : 180 m / 590 ft
• Type of hike : Out and back

2. About Nigardsbreen Glacier

Nigardsbreen is an arm of Jostedalbreen glacier which in turn is the largest glacier in Norway and continental Europe. In 1985 the Nigardsbreen Nature Reserve was created to protect the glacier arm and its surrounding. The reserve borders directly with Jostedalsbreen National Park.

The glacier lies at the end of the Jostedal Valley. The nearest town is Gaupne which is 30 minutes drive away.

It is one of the most visited glaciers in Norway, but sadly just like many glaciers in the World, Nigardsbreen isn’t immune to the effect of climate change and shrinks in size year after year.

3. The map of the hike to Nigardsbreen

Above you can see the path I followed from the car park to the summit. I measured the distance, elevation gain, and route with my Garmin Fenix 6S pro watch.

4. How difficult is the hike to Nigardsbreen ?

With only 180 meters (590 feet) of elevation gain the hike to Nigardsbreen is relatively easy. It is still a mountain hike though, so easy doesn’t mean you can tackle it wearing sandals.

There is quite a bit of rock hopping in the first half of the hike and a part of the trail leads through smooth rock slabs. They can get quite slippery in wet weather. Staircases have been placed in tricky sections.

Navigation on the trail to Nigardsbreen is very easy with plenty of waymarks from start to finish.

5. When can you hike to Nigardsbreen

The toll road to the parking lot is usually open from late May/early June to October. During winter time it closes and cross-country ski tracks are set up.

During winter time the glacier and its crevasses are covered in snow and it is not safe to venture out there on your own unless you have plenty of mountaineering experience.

6. How to get to the trailhead of the Nigardsbreen hike

The best way to get to the trailhead is to drive. There is a huge parking lot right near the start of the trail.

Bear in mind that the last 3 kilometers of the road between the Breheim visitor center and the parking lot are on a toll road.

There is an automatic gate that opens once you pay the fee. Cards are accepted and the current fee for cars, motorbikes, and motorhomes is 90 NOK.

If you are looking for bathroom facilities, there are toilets in the Breheim visitor center and at the parking lot near the trailhead. There are no facilities directly on the trail and not many places where you can go off the trail and hide.

7. Optional shuttle boat to shorten the hike

The optional shuttle boats operate on the nearby lake Nigardsbrevatnet between June and September, cutting the distance and time of the hike by half.

No reservations are required and they operate on a first-come-first-served basis. A roundtrip fee is 75 NOK per adult and 50 NOK per child.

To get on the boat you just line up near the departure dock at the end of the parking lot and wait for enough people to join the trip. The boats don’t have a regular schedule. They operate on demand throughout the day and the journey only takes a few minutes.

8. Nigardsbreen trail description

The start of the trail is at the northern end of the parking lot. An information board has been placed near the trailhead to educate tourists about the trail, and the proper hiking kit.

The first half of the hike runs along the shore of Lake Nigardsbrevatnet. The trail is undulating and there are plenty of rocks to hop on to avoid your feet getting wet.

Be aware of the no-stopping signs due to rocks falling off occasionally from the nearby mountains, particularly after rainfall.

You can skip this part of the trail and take the shuttle boat, which I wrote about in the previous paragraph.

The second half takes you through the glacier moraine up to the viewpoint of the Nigardsbreen glacier. This path can be quite slippery as you walk on rock slabs smoothed by ice and water.

Around halfway up, you will cross a suspension bridge above the Jostedola River which takes its beginning only 100 meters higher.

The viewpoint was set up very close to the glacier. Too close to my liking to be honest. Having read about many accidents of tourists being crushed by ice because of getting too close to the glacier I couldn’t help but feel uneasy.

Unless you are on a guided tour, don’t even think about crossing the safety barriers!

TIP: Go in the late afternoon after the crowds disperse and have the whole place to yourself.

9. Guided trekking tours on the Nigardsbreen glacier

I have done a guided glacier trek on the Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia and it is still one of the coolest things I have ever done on my travels.

If you would like to get up close and personal with the Nigardsbreen glacier and venture out directly on the ice, then you can book a guided trekking tour .

Prices for a guided hike range from 545 to 1380 NOK per person and the hikes take anywhere between 3-6 hours to complete.

10. What to bring and wear on the hike to Nigardsbreen

My go-to pair of hiking shoes for easier trails or via ferrata, where I don’t need extra ankle support. They provide excellent grip on the rock and are very durable.

11. Where to stay nearby 

If like me you are traveling around Norway in a campervan then I highly recommend staying at the Sandvik campsite in Gaupne. It’s in a lovely setting and has nice facilities. It will be a great place to explore other nearby hikes which I will get to in the next paragraph.

If you are traveling in a regular car, below are a few hotel choices nearby.

Gaupnetunet Hotel & Huts

Great and central location in Gaupne with easy access to the road leading to Nigardsbreen. The Sandvik campsite is operated from the reception of this hotel.

This is the best option if you want to stay directly in the Jostedal Valley and the Nigardsbreen day hike

12. Other activities and hikes to experience nearby

Molden hike

A very popular day hike with the best views over Lusterfjord. Fed with water from glaciers of the Jostedalsbreen (including Nigardsbreen) Lusterfjord has beautiful turquoise color, particularly on a sunny day and you can see those colors from the summit hike to Molden .

Austerdalsbreen hike

A great off-the-beaten path albeit a slightly longer alternative to the Nigardsbreen hike. The Austerdalsbreen glacier viewpoint is, at least in my eyes, the most beautiful glacier viewpoint in Norway. I don’t think it will stay under the radar for much longer.

Sognefjellet Scenic Road

The Sognefjellet Scenic Route runs between Gaupne in the South and Lom Municipality in the North. For over 100 kilometers the road follows exquisite landscapes and crosses Northern Europe’s highest mountain pass. With plenty of viewpoints to stop and take photos, this is a must-do scenic route that features on some of my Norway road trip itineraries.

Thanks for your information it is really fantastic. Please, can you tell me the name of the excursion you chose to the glacier ( I saw 4 in the company you recommended and I do not know what to chouse); how many hours do you walk on ice? If you are a good hiking but not in ice, it is posible to do your own hike? I want so much walk as long as I can on ice but I do not know if I can I cannot drive, how can I go ( taxi to expensive for me) from Gaupne to the visitor Centre? Thanks

Hi Maria. Thanks for visiting. It depends on your budget and your fitness level. I think the first one called “Short Blue Ice Hike” is a good one to start. you get to spend 1.5 hours on a glacier. You can’t go out and walk on the ice on your own. You have to do it with the company and a guide. You can only walk on your own until the viewpoint of the glacier. As for buses. There are buses that go from Songdal called ‘glacier bus’ which operate during the main season. I am not sure if they stop in Gaupne but I imagine they do since they go past Gaupne anyways. Nor-way.no is a good website to look for bus connections.
