Fable: The Journey

Fable: The Journey is a game by Lionhead Studios for the Xbox 360. The game will only be playable with Microsoft's Kinect; no controller needed, just yourself. Peter Molyneux presented the game at E3 2011 with a trailer and some gameplay.

Set fifty years after the events of Fable III , you are a normal Dweller named Gabriel who has been separated from his tribe. Gabriel comes across Theresa , who has been wounded by the Devourer , an agent of the Corruptor . The Corruption is taking over Albion , and Gabriel must take Theresa to the Spire to restore her power.

The game takes place throughout large portions of Albion . The events of Fable III are still felt during Fable: The Journey .

Gameplay [ ]

Fable: The Journey is a first-person game that has players use Kinect to manipulate magic in order to defeat enemies. By using your hands to perform certain gestures, players can cast 3 different damage dealing spells with their dominant hand and manipulate environmental objects and enemies using the 'Push' spell with their other hand.

A large portion of the game takes place with your horse, Seren. Driving the horse requires "holding" the reins and guiding the horse along a path. You must also care for your horse by petting and brushing her as well as caring for her when she gets hurt. There are experience orbs along the road as well, some of which can only be collected at varying speeds. According to information revealed at E3 2012, the horse may even learn specific voice commands used when you spur it forward.

Interspersed with the travel and combat sections of the game are rest stops, optional stops and camps.  Rest stops allow you to heal Seren before continuing on your journey, optional stops challenge the player with a short combat segment or puzzle for a collectable reward and camps allow the player to groom Seren and learn more about Theresa and her motivations.

There is also cross-game interaction with Fable Heroes . Gold earned in Fable Heroes can be transferred to Fable: The Journey as experience; however, this can only be done once per playthrough. All Hero Dolls unlocked in Fable Heroes can be hung from your cart in Fable: The Journey

First Look [ ]

After the first demo was shown at E3 2012, there was a backlash from a large number of people (particularly those from the Fable fan-base). The game was shown as an "on-rails" shooter as opposed to the conventional RPG format of the previous Fable titles. Peter Molyneux has since apologized during an interview, stating that the reveal of the game was done poorly and that the developers took a risk by removing "the navigation system" from view, which is where much of the criticism came from. He went on to say that the games of the main Fable series were separate from this one as, in terms of plot, it would not focus on the "bloodline".

Fable: The Journey doesn't have a complex combat system. The use of  Strength  and  Skill  were totally removed and the player can only use  Will  attacks thanks to the magic Gauntlets acquired at the beginning of the game.

Gabriel spells

Art of Gabriel using spells on Hobbes

The  Spells  the player is able to use have to be unlocked through the gameplay of the mains story in dungeons called Temples . Most spells are only offensive but there are some used for defense such as Counter.

The spells are extremely necessary for the gameplay to proceed once unlocked, as lots of puzzles demand their usage once they're unlocked. Also, new enemies show up to pose a challenge towards the new spells.

See  Fable: The Journey Spells for a complete list of spells available in the game.

Fable: The Journey preview - Hands-on the first three hours of the Kinect-based adventure

Race horses and cast magic spells with no controller in hand

The more we see Lionhead’s Kinect-controlled, first-person adventure, Fable: The Journey , the more impressed we are with how far the title has come. The integration of motion controls and the switch to the first-person perspective is a sharp contrast from the previous games in the series, and those changes had a lot of Fable fans worried. But after we had a chance to play through the first few hours of the game, it seems those fears may be unwarranted. The characters, environments, and interactivity through the Kinect are all delightfully Fable.

Fable: The Journey is much more cinematic than its predecessors. The game starts with the hero, Gabriel, traveling with his nomadic Dweller tribe when he falls asleep at the reins and gets cut off from the group. He decides to take a different path and comes across the seer Teresa, who is running from a mysterious, evil force called Corruption, and asks Gabriel to take her back to her home to the Dark Spire where she can regain her power. Teresa rides along and guides Gabriel on the path toward becoming a hero and stopping the Corruption--whether he wants to or not.

Playing Fable: The Journey feels like you’re playing an interactive movie. The cutscenes are plentiful and there is constant dialogue between Gabriel and the other characters accompanying him, even during gameplay. As you steer your horse down a road and enjoy the scenery, Theresa often fills you in on the surrounding environment, telling you stories on the history of Albion, and challenges you to enter dangerous areas in search of powerful relics, treasures, or just someone to ask for directions. It’s all surprisingly immersive and informative, but the witty banter and humor also shines through.

fable journey xbox 360 kinect

A large portion of the game will be spent driving the wagon, which is controlled entirely with your arms. If you pull back with one arm and push forward with the other, you’ll turn. Pulling both hands to your chest slows the horse to a walk and raising your arms up and cracking the reins speeds your horse up to a trot. There’s a short sprint if you crack the reins again. The controls are intuitive and easy to learn, but the driving sequences are still challenging at the same time.

It may sound a bit boring to stare at a horse’s backside for more than a few minutes, but the game keeps the driving sections entertaining. Aside from the companion conversations and beautiful vistas, you’ll also have to pay attention to hazards on the road, or your horse will suffer the consequences. Your horse can take damage from colliding with objects, running over rough road too quickly, or being attacked by enemies. You’ll see your horse’s health meter drop if you make a mistake, but once you stop by one of the many campsites along the road, you’ll truly see repercussions of your carelessness.

fable journey xbox 360 kinect

Gabriel’s horse is the hero’s main companion and best friend in the game, and is one that you have keep in good health if you want the old girl to perform at peak efficiency. During your travels, you’ll come across rest stops and camps that allow you to check on your horse. If you’ve steered your horse into objects, or happened to come across a hostile group of Hobs during a driving section, you’ll see ugly gashes and even arrows lodged in her side. You’ll have to carefully pull out arrows and use your healing powers to mend the wounds, but if you are careless, your horse will let out heartbreaking cries of pain.

Caring for and healing your horse creates an interesting dynamic. You’ll get experience for cleaning the accumulated mud off your horse, feeding her apples, and pumping water for her to drink while you’re at camp. But since the horse is such an important character in the story and because you interact with her so much, you’ll want to heal her wounds and keep her clean because you’ll feel bad otherwise.

But Fable: The Journey isn’t all about brushing horses and driving wagons--you’ll also shoot magic spells with your own hands. We’re not going to say that it beats the standard Xbox 360 controller just yet, but the way you use your body to cast magic in combat feels completely natural. The action sequences take you through on-rails levels that include dark caves, Balverine-infested forests, and Hob camps. To fight off your enemies, you can shoot an electrifying Bolt spell, manipulate objects and enemies with the Push spell, and block attacks with the deflection spell--all with simple hand gestures that work extremely well. However, surviving battles isn’t about how fast you wave your arms around; each spell can be used in special, creative ways.

Push will latch onto enemies and objects with green tendrils, which you can use to fling your target around the level with a wave of your hand. Bolt can be fired directly at your enemies, or you can shoot the electric ball off to the side, then drag it toward your target. This makes it easy to damage enemies hiding in cover or home in on an explosive barrel--which is extremely satisfying. The real fun comes when you combine the spells to toss an enemy into the air then blast him with your offensive spell, or deflect enemy projectiles back to the source and then finish them off while they’re stunned. It all combines to make you feel like a powerful mage, and it’s a lot of fun as a result.

fable journey xbox 360 kinect

Fable: The Journey is shaping up to be one of the more promising games to come out for the Kinect. From what we’ve seen so far, this new direction for the series still feels like a Fable game. The story takes some unexpected turns, you actually care about the characters, and the new perspective on the world makes even the familiar sights feel fresh. We’re interested how the adventure turns out when it releases on October 9.

E3 quick play: fable: the journey.

The next Fable has been announced, but before you run to play Fable 3 again in preparation, it's not Fable 4. This time Molynuex and the gang have turned to the Kinect sensor for the Xbox 360, creating a game that exists in the Fable world but doesn't feature any of the characters. But does that work? Will you want to play it? And what's all this fuss about the new game being "on rails". We find out.

Our quick take

Fable: The Journey

What platform is it on?

When's it due out?

What other game is it like?

Fable series

Does it use any new tech like 3D, PlayStation Move, or Kinect for Xbox 360?

Yes – the Kinect

Fable: The Journey is poised to take the cherished action-adventure series to Kinect for Xbox 360. Under Microsoft's licensing agreement with Epic, Lionhead is equipped with the latest Unreal Engine technology to bring powerful new experiences to the critically acclaimed Xbox 360 exclusive franchise that has sold more than 9 million copies.

The storyline

Back in Albion Fable: The Journey follows a different path to the one in the Fable games, however exists in the same environment. Set soon after the events of Fable 3, The Journey puts players in control of a new hero who has just come upon Theresa; the blind fortune teller featured prominently in the Fable series. Tasked with bringing Theresa to the Spire, our hero will have to venture through an Albion that will feel somewhat familiar.

Our first impressions

We enjoyed two outings of Fable: The Journey across the course of E3 in Los Angeles. First at the Microsoft press conference at the start of the week at the E3 gaming convention, and then again in a behind closed doors session with Peter Molyneux himself.

Between the two we’ve managed to get a good grasp of the game, seeing different elements and grilling Molyneux at the same time.

What we do know is that the game will be a complete Kinect experience when it hits the shops some time in 2012, and that you won't need to use the controller at all.

“In the past Fable has been about walking, jogging or running,” Molyneux explains to Pocket-lint. “This time you can play the game entirely sitting down.”

Worried that driving around Albion in a car wouldn’t a) fit in and b) involve you having to hold your hands out in front of you – something that would be tiring, you’ll play a gypsy riding a horse and caravan with you arms controlling the reigns of the horse to move forwards, faster, slower, left and right. Pull the reigns up and your horse will move forward, to the right it moves in that direction, and so forth just like driving a real horse. Molyneux tells us whips will be available at a later stage in the game (moral choices and all that).

But it's not just about moving your arms. Molyneux is hoping to include voice control as well so you’ll be able to “click click” or “whooo boy” your horse ditching the arm controls altogether.

Why’s all this important, well from what we can gather it’s going to be the main stay of the game with you riding around in your caravan breaking occasionally to interact with things on the side of the road.

The game focuses around life-force Molyneux explains. Everything has life force and you can take it from creatures, animals, people, pretty much anything in the game. Take too much and they die bringing in a moral choice that we’ve seen in previous Molyneux games.

“It’s not on rails,” Molyneux affirms. “You’ll be chased, you’ll chase.”

That said we immediately go into an area on rails (a pre glide path that sees the game push you along into the action like you are on a train track rather than free movement as in previous Fable games) to take on a group of ghouls. It’s a chance to show off the magic element of Fable: The Journey.

Magic can be wielded with one hand, or both, and depending on your hand movements will depend on what magic you can create and how it is cast. Holding your hands together lets you create the magic and depending on what you do with your hands thereafter will depend on what happens on screen.

We see magic being squished together to create stronger magic, as well as something Molyneux refers to as Creation magic that lets you create shields, spears, fishing rods, and even a telescope. It's magical for the lack of a better word.

Sadly we were only treated to seeing the magic used for the shield and spear elements in our demos, but you get the sense that you'll really feel like a magician casting your spells and setting them off on their short journeys.

Trying to drive home the fact that Fable: The Journey isn’t about a rails game on foot, Molyneux again tells us that “There isn’t many times when you are on foot.”

It’s something that we are going to have to take with a pinch of salt for that’s all we’ve seen, but other titbits to note is that it's the same team that developed the now halted Milo and Kate venture demoed for Kinect last year and not the Fable 3 team. That means plenty of emotional tugs on the heart strings no doubt and something more than Molyneux has been able to show us in our 15 minute demo.

As to why it’s not called Fable 4? According to Molyneux he didn’t want to be bound by the Fable world. This route allows him to enjoy its surroundings without having to worry about the characters from the previous games or the affecting the storyline.

Our time as always was brief and from what we’ve seen we are really sure what to make of Fable: The Journey. If the walking elements are on the infrequent side then that means a lot of staring at a horse’s arse and we are sure that’s a game we want to play either.

What is clear is that it’s typical bold stuff from the creator of classics like Black and White and the original Fable series and it will be interesting to see how Fable: The Journey develops over the coming months. This is one game where the verdict is still very much out.

Fable: The Journey is out some time in 2012.

Please note

The E3 games convention is a fantastic chance to see the latest games due out over the coming year, as well as, letting us get a glimpse into what is going to be the big titles and the ones to avoid like the plague.

The big problem however is that for most of the titles that glimpse is, well, just that. At the show you'll get to play a level here or a multiplayer map there or even have a product manager walk you through a specific level.

So with that in mind we present you with our Quick Play.

What we've done is broken down the key facts you need to know and then given you our first impressions based on around 15 minutes of gaming. For us that 15 minutes isn't enough to do a First Look review or even a review. How can you rate a game that offers over 30 hours of gaming on just 15 minutes of play? However it should hopefully give you an idea, a feeling, a notion, of what to expect come launch day.
