farm aid tour 2023

This year's Farm Aid concert on Saturday promises another musical harvest – and you can watch from home or on the go.

The festival to benefit family farms, being held at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana, is headlined by Farm Aid co-founders Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp, along with fellow Farm Aid board members Dave Matthews and Margo Price. "We are honored and excited to bring the Farm Aid experience back to Indiana," Mellencamp said in a statement . "My home state holds deep meaning for me and for the generations of family farmers who have dedicated their lives to caring for the Earth and bringing us good food.”

It's the 35th in-person Farm Aid concert. The first was held September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois six weeks after the Live Aid concert when Bob Dylan said from the stage, "Wouldn't it be great if we did something for our own farmers right here in America?"

Nelson, Young and Mellencamp organized the concert; Dylan, Billy Joel, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty were among the performers. The concert raised more than $7 million for family farmers.

The idea for Farm Aid was inspired by Bob Dylan's quotes at the 1985 Live Aid benefit concert, which raised money for the Ethiopian famine. During his set, Dylan mentioned that he hoped that some of the money raised may be able to pay for the mortgages on some of the farms in the Unites States.

Shortly thereafter, fellow musicians Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young joined together to organize the Farm Aid benefit concert, which aimed to raise money for and help family farmers in America. The first concert, which hosted over 80,000 attendees and raised over $9 million, was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois with performances from Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and more.

Decades later, Farm Aid is still working to increase awareness of the importance of family farms, and each year brings together some of the best names in country, blues and rock for an all-day festival of music, good food and hands-on activities to get folks in touch with the roots of our food.

Since its establishment in 1985, Farm Aid has raised more than $70 million for family farmers.

Bob Dylan Surprises Crowd at Willie Nelson’s 2023 Farm Aid Festival in Indiana

In July 1985, the singer's remark onstage at the Live Aid charity mega-concert inspired Nelson to create his first benefit for America's family farmers in September of that year.

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan astonished thousands of fans at Willie Nelson ’s sold-out Farm Aid festival with a surprise late-night performance Saturday (Sept. 23) at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana.

Willie Nelson’s 2023 Farm Aid Festival: Bob Dylan’s Cameo, Neil Young’s Return & More…

Trending on billboard.

On July 13, 1985, in Philadelphia, Dylan had taken the stadium stage of Live Aid, the mega-benefit organized to raise funds for Ethiopian famine relief. Between songs, he mused to the event’s global audience: couldn’t a similar benefit help America’s family farmers?

“The question hit me like a ton of bricks,” Nelson recalled to Billboard in 2015. The musician was on the road that day, watching Live Aid on his tour-bus TV, and began looking into the economic crisis that was then forcing family farmers off their land and into bankruptcy. Then he called his friends, including the musician who made the suggestion.

Dylan was among the remarkable lineup of country and rock musicians who played the first Farm Aid in Champaign, Ill., on Sept. 22, 1985, a bill which also included Nelson’s fellow Farm Aid founders Neil Young and John Mellencamp, along with Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt and many more — including Tom Petty, who died in 2017, and Petty’s band, The Heartbreakers.

Three decades on, Farm Aid remains music’s longest-running concert for a cause, having raised more than $64 million to support family farmers and a sustainable food system.

At Farm Aid in 1985, Dylan performed with Petty and The Heartbreakers.

“At that time, Tony Dimitriades, Tom’s manager, was in a business partnership with [the late] Elliot Roberts in Lookout Management” who represented Dylan, recalled Bill DeYoung, a music critic, author and Petty historian, in a 2017 interview with Billboard.   DeYoung for many years worked at the Gainesville Sun , the newspaper in Petty’s Florida hometown.

“Dylan needed a band for the first Farm Aid,” said DeYoung. “Everything else sprang from that.”

“Everything else” included the True Confessions Tour that Dylan and Petty launched together early the following year, in February 1986, during which the Heartbreakers backed Dylan for some 60 shows in Australia, Japan and the United States — including two nights at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. and three nights at Madison Square Garden.

The singers also performed at the second Farm Aid on July 4, 1986 — via satellite from their tour stop at Rich Stadium, outside Buffalo, New York. A second outing, the Temples in Flames tour, followed in 1987.

And the creative friendship between Dylan and Petty — born at Farm Aid — flourished.

In 1988, Dylan welcomed Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison to his studio in Malibu to record the song “Handle Me With Care.” Originally intended as the B-side to a single from Harrison’s Cloud Nine album, the song instead became the inspiration for the tongue-in-cheek supergroup The Traveling Wilburys.

Watch Bob Dylan and the Heartbreakers Play a Surprise Set of Sixties Classics at Farm Aid

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night, a shadowy group of figures walked onto the Farm Aid stage at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. This was supposed to be the moment where Wille Nelson wrapped up the night, but there was no sign of the Red Headed Stranger or his band. Instead, another act was plugging in instruments on the darkened stage. There was no announcement of any kind, and the large screens on both sides of the stage went completely blank for the first time all day. It took about 15 seconds for the screams to start once the light hit the face of the guy in the middle.

This was an extraordinary moment for many reasons. Dylan almost never makes unannounced appearances or performs without his own band; he hasn’t played with the Heartbreakers in 20 years; Campbell, Tench, and Ferrone have rarely performed together in public since Petty’s death; Dylan usually plays piano at his shows; there wasn’t even a tiny hint anywhere throughout the day that this might happen.

It became even more surreal once it became clear they were opening with “Maggie’s Farm,” which was their closer at the first Farm Aid. Dylan hadn’t played the song anywhere since 2009, but this wasn’t a rearranged Never Ending Tour rendition only recognizable by the lyrics. This was Dylan and the band largely recreating the sound of the original 1965 recording.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The mini-set wrapped up with “Ballad of a Thin Man.” This was yet another 1965 tune played to studio perfection. Before the crowd could fully process what happened, Dylan and the band walked off. They didn’t say a single word to the audience at any point. And since the screens remained off during the entire set, it’s quite possible some fans on the lawn didn’t even realize what had just taken place, since they could barely see any of it.

What exactly brought about this un-billed set? Is there any scenario Dylan tours with them next year and plays sets centered around his Sixties catalog? That’s very hard to imagine, but so was this Farm Aid set before it happened. Dylan has east coast dates with his standard band throughout October and November. Beyond that, it’s impossible to guess what will happen.

The Dylan/Heartbreakers set is likely to dominate the coverage of this year’s Farm Aid, but it was just one of many amazing moments. Here are eight others.

Willie Nelson Thinks Queer Message in Orville Peck Video Is 'More Important Than Ever'

Hear bob dylan cover hank williams' 'on the banks of the old pontchartrain' for the first time, dolly parton, linda martell, willie nelson's spotify numbers skyrocket thanks to beyoncé.

Ann Wilson Takes Charge After singing just two songs, Irsay walked off the stage and handed his band over to Heart’s Ann Wilson. This was a smart move even though this was now the Jim Irsay Band Minus Jim Irsay. Wilson belted out the Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” and Heart’s “Barracuda” was stunning power. Let’s hope she finds a way to reconnect with her sister Nancy at some point soon and get Heart back on the road. She remains one of the most gifted singers in rock.

The Black Opry Wows The Crowd Early in the day, the Black Opry featuring Lori Rayne, Tyler Bryant, and Kyshona took the stage. They had a tough task since many fans were still shuffling in and the crowd was largely unfamiliar with their work. Their set was also delayed by audio problems. But once they started singing, the crowd was wowed into a hushed silence. The three singers took turns signing their own country-tinged tunes and cheering each other on. They left to a huge standing ovation. Hopefully this is the start of a new Farm Aid tradition.

The Nelson Boys Deliver Just days after playing the Roxy with Neil Young, Micah Nelson played a solo set early in the day at Farm Aid that climaxed with a splendid “Everything Is Bullshit.” He’s still battling the viral infection Vestibular Neuritis and had to utilize a walking stick, but was otherwise in fine form. Later in the afternoon, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real had the entire amphitheater singing along to “Find Yourself.” They’ve been Farm Aid regulars for quite a while, and they’re better and better every single year.

Bob Weir Teams Up With Margo Price and Sturgill Simpson Bob Weir brought out Sturgill Simpson and Margo Price for his brief set with Wolf Bros. They opened with “Truckin,” transitioned into “Dark Star,” and closed out with “Not Fade Away.” Margo Price joined them on the last one. Dead and Co. may be a thing of the past after their farewell tour this summer, but it’s clear that Weir is nowhere ready to retire himself.

Drake’s Response Track to Kendrick Lamar Appears to Have Leaked

Drake responds to rick ross' nose job claim, warns rapper after diss, 'don't worry we'll handle it', 'secrets of the hells angels' tells real-life tales of the country's most notorious motorcycle gang, o.j. simpson executor says ron goldman's family will get 'zero, nothing' from estate.

John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews Play the Hits It wouldn’t be Farm Aid without John Mellencamp breaking out “Scarecrow,” “Small Town,” and “Pink Houses.” After spending much of the year on the road, his band was extremely tight. And John was in extremely good spirits as he played to what’s basically a hometown crowd. Directly before his set, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds had the entire place singing along to “Satellite,” “Crush,” and other old favorites. The full Dave Matthews Band still put on a great show, but it’s often more satisfying to see Dave in this mode.

About Farm Aid

Farm Aid is a full day of music, family farmers, HOMEGROWN food and agrarian experiences.

“Family farmers have the solutions to some of our toughest challenges,” said Willie. “As we face a changing climate, farmers in Indiana, across the Midwest and all over the country are farming in ways that create more resilient farms to build healthy soils and protect our water.”

Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and Margo Price host an annual festival to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food.

For more than 35 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $78 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

John Mellencamp would like you to behave. Or ‘don’t come to my show.’

farm aid tour 2023

John Mellencamp is a septuagenarian, a thrice-divorced grandfather and a chain smoker. He’s a liberal activist and a painter who’s never moved out of ruby-red Indiana. He’s a boomer rock star with a bunch of contemporaries in the grave. He’s quit the music business who knows how many times and is back on tour now, offsetting deathless hits like 1982’s “Jack & Diane” ( “Hold on to 16 as long as you can”) with death-obsessed latter-day songs like 2008’s “Longest Days” (“ Sometimes you get sick and you don’t get better”).

Last month, he walked offstage after being heckled at a concert in Ohio (though he returned to finish his set). Someone who’s never read an interview with the legendary musician might speculate that he’s reached his temperamental dotage, but a closer character study suggests Mr. Mellencamp has always been this capricious.

“I’m 72, and I’m still doing a teenager’s job,” he said, chuckling, during a recent Zoom interview.

He says his peers who are still at it are just as surprised by their longevity as he is by his own. Though they seem to be fewer and fewer.

“I’ll be working out today with an iPod and a song will come on and I’ll go, ‘Well, that [expletive] guy’s dead. This guy’s dead. What happened to this guy?’”

Here’s what he knows for sure: He’s not going to pitch a tour to play one of his best-loved old albums in its entirety, a la Bruce Springsteen and U2. So don’t look for a 40th anniversary roadshow of his quintuple-platinum-selling 1985 landmark “Scarecrow” next year, or one for its triple-platinum 1987 follow-up “The Lonesome Jubilee” in 2027.

“It just hits me sideways,” he says.

And he won’t be coming to an arena near you.

In 2009, the year Mellencamp toured minor league ballparks with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson (with whom he and Neil Young organized Farm Aid, an annual concert to raise money for farmers, staring in 1985), folk legend Pete Seeger gave him a crucial piece of career advice: “Keep it small, but keep it going.”

Which is why most of Mellencamp’s appearances in the D.C. area over the last 15 years have been at the 3,700-seat Constitution Hall, where he’ll perform again on April 18.

“As soon as [Seeger] said that, it all clicked in my head,” Mellencamp says. “Quit worrying about if you’re going to [expletive] sell all 20,000 seats. Go play places you know you’re going to sell out.” A smaller room makes audiences more tolerant of the unfamiliar, he says, though his set list is still heavy on the hits.

Mellencamp started singing in a band as a teenager in Seymour, Ind. When he first went to New York to seek his fortune in 1974, he was as interested in painting as in singing. (Even now, he still paints almost daily.) After several Hoosierville-to-the-Apple long hauls dropping demo tapes at every record label or management firm he could find an address for, he got a lousy deal, a risible but seemingly indelible stage name in “Johnny Cougar” and an unmemorable first few albums.

It wasn’t until his fifth, 1982’s “American Fool,” that Mellencamp began to find his voice as a songwriter, scoring his first and only U.S. No. 1 in “Jack & Diane.” On its follow-up, 1983’s “Uh-Huh,” the Artist Formerly Known as Johnny Cougar was at last able to use his family name, becoming John “Cougar” Mellencamp for his most commercial era.

He remained an innovative but reliable hit maker throughout the 1980s, landing 10 songs in the Billboard Top 10. More significantly, he smuggled then-uncool instruments like accordions and violins — and lyrics that foregrounded their political and existential discontent more audibly than many of his peers in that feather-haired era — onto MTV and FM rock-radio playlists: “Rain on the Scarecrow,” “Paper in Fire” and “Check It Out” have all remained set list staples over the decades.

By the time he was finally able to drop “Cougar” altogether, the 1990s had dawned. And though Mellencamp continued to make good records and score hits — his cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night” with D.C. native Meshell Ndegeocello lodged itself in the Top 40 for most of 1994 — he spent the decade railing against the fact the culture was passing him by, cussing out (and, on at least one occasion, punching out) label guys who couldn’t figure out how to make his hip-hop-curious Clinton-era albums sell like his Reagan-era ones had.

Once Mellencamp finally accepted that he was no longer a mainstream musician, he experienced a creative rebirth, teaming up with producer T Bone Burnett for a pair of stripped-down albums. 2008’s “Life, Death, Love and Freedom” was as somber and persuasive as a deathbed confession. He followed it up with 2010’s even more willfully primitive “No Better Than This.”

Though he’s continued to release albums of mournful but nourishing new music — two in the last three years, in fact — you won’t hear much of that material in his show. In his approach to curating his deep catalogue for the stage, Mellencamp was always more a Tom Petty than a Springsteen, nestling new or unfamiliar songs in among road-tested favorites and tending to stick to the set list rather than calling audibles. “I toured with Dylan for a while and he didn’t play any [expletive] songs that anybody recognized,” he says. “I thought, that’s too extreme. So it’s a fine line of what should be recognized and what should be kind of challenging for the audience. And I think the audience who likes music, they like the idea of being challenged a little bit.”

Of course, with Mellencamp, there are always contradictions. Including to his own edicts, like the one about booking only smallish venues. Later this year, he’ll play 15 outdoor dates on the Outlaw Music Festival Tour with his longtime Farm Aid fellows and ’09 ballpark tour mates, Willie and Bob. But when he isn’t sharing the bill with other headliners, he’s sticking to theaters.

And he’d like some decorum.

“I do expect etiquette inside of the theater, the same way you would at a Broadway show,” he says. “My shows are not really concerts anymore. They’re performances, and there’s a difference between a performance and a concert. Look, I’m not for everyone anymore. I’m just not. And if you want to come and scream and yell and get drunk, don’t come to my show.”

Step wooster visits historic law-reed-huss farm, breadcrumb menu.

By Eric Williams

On Sunday, March 24 th , The Ohio State University Wooster campus STEP Program was invited to tour the historic Huss Family farm and museum in Uhrichsville, Ohio. The Second Year Transformational Experience Program at the Wooster campus was invited to tour the grounds by Dr. William (Bill) Huss.

Dr. Huss learned about the Wooster campus STEP program while researching different programs in the area. Dr. Huss found the program to be innovative and worked with Wooster STEP coordinator, Penny Nemitz, to learn more about the program and to facilitate a student visit to his expansive and beautiful mid-19 th  century farmstead.

The student attendees ranged from past, present and future STEP students. Emma Leggett and Laura Scholl were 2023 STEP students. Jacob Stiltner, Trenton Horner, Ellen Fuller and Cambell Warrington are current STEP students in 2024. Daniel Hinojosa and Caleb Bennett are joining for next year.  We also had Lexi Schmidt, Landscape Horticulture major who was very interested in the crops and flora over the years on the farm.

Historic Huss farm features the original mid 1800’s farmhouse that has remained largely untouched for nearly a century, making the rooms and materials therein a time capsule of space and ephemera. Dr. Huss has worked diligently to preserve and recreate the living spaces of his various ancestors with rooms “feeling” like they would in World War I, the American Gilded Age, and the Depression. Students were treated to a guided tour of the locations by Dr. Huss himself and were delighted by the antiquity they literally were walking through.  Dr. Linden, Dr. Williams , P.Nemitz and the student attendees were incredibly gratified by the full experience and duly grateful to Dr. Huss for his hospitality and providing this fantastic learning experience.

Are you Looking for Kosher Eatery or Jewish POI near you?

About rostov-on-don.

Rostov-on-Don is a port city and the administrative centre of Rostov Oblast and the Southern Federal District of Russia. From ancient times, the area around the mouth of the Don River has held cultural and commercial importance. Ancient indigenous inhabitants included the Scythian, Sarmat, and Savromat tribes. It was the site of Tanais, an ancient Greek colony, Fort Tana, under the Genoese and Fort Azak in the time of the Ottoman Empire.

The Best Of Rostov-on-Don

Are you a rostov-on-don kosher establishment or tour operator, jewish history, poi & kosher establishments in rostov-on-don.

Rostov is the capital of Southern Russia, with a population of close to 15,000 Jews. Prior to WWII it was a thriving hub of Jewish life. Tragically, during the war it was also the site of the worst mass execution of Jews in Russia, where over 20,000 Jews perished over the course of two horrific days. Today the community is springing back to life, with one of the most active youth groups in Russia, a Jewish day school, an overnight camp, a dynamic women's club, a busy humanitarian aid service, and new programs every year.

What Is *JOFY?

JOFY, or "Jewish Observant Friendly" Establishments are lodging establishments offering special services for Jewish Observant guests such as Shabbat meals, accommodation on lower floors and regular keys for the rooms. It can also be a NON KOSHER establishment located in walking distance from the local Shul, community or kosher restaurants area.

Please note - *JOFY does NOT mean that KOSHER food is served on the premises!

Against the Grain Bonus EP 2: Rick Bayless, The Farmers’ Chef

Learn more about against the grain: the farm aid podcast.

Against the Grain: The Farm Aid podcast logo

We just got back from Luck Reunion, a music festival held on Farm Aid President, Willie Nelson’s ranch every March. There, we talked to farmers, artists and chefs. Specifically, we spoke to superstar Chef Rick Bayless. On a new bonus episode, Chef Bayless recounts his time living in Mexico. There he noticed that if people had a strong local agricultural economy, the food in the restaurants and homes just tasted better. When he moved to Chicago he decided to replicate this model.

In this very short, appetizer episode, Rick talks about how he worked with other chefs and local farmers to organize the first farmers markets in Chicago. More than that, over the last 37 years, his Frontera Farmer Foundation has invested $3.5 million in the city’s local agricultural economy, primarily through small grants to farmers seeking to expand production.

Listen to this Bonus Episode below, and make sure to subscribe in your podcast app of choice!

Rick Bayless

Rick Bayless

Chef Rick Bayless

Most people know Chef Rick Bayless from winning the inaugural season of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, beating out the French and Italian with his authentic Mexican cuisine. Others know him from the twelve seasons of his highly rated Public Television series, Mexico–One Plate at a Time, which was broadcast coast to coast and has earned him multiple Daytime Emmy nominations for Best Culinary Host. While known and lauded internationally for his TV shows, cookbooks, and philanthropy, Rick still spends most of his days in Chicago on Clark Street, continuing to spread the joy and push the boundaries of authentic Mexican cuisine with his restaurants: Frontera Grill, Topolobampo, Xoco, and Bar Sótano.

Rick and his wife, Deann, founded the casual Frontera Grill in 1987 and received the James Beard Foundation’s highest award, Outstanding Restaurant, in 2007. The 4-star Toplobampo, which served its first meals in 1991, earned the Beard Foundation’s award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2017 — a unprecedented accomplishment for side-by-side restaurants. At Topolobampo, Rick has also achieved a different feat: earning and maintaining a Michelin star since the guide first came to Chicago 12 years ago.

Excited to share the whole breadth of Mexican Cuisine, Rick brought River North the fast-casual, LEED GOLD-certified Xoco in 2009. This widely popular spot serves wood-oven tortas, steaming caldos, golden churros, and bean-to-cup Mexican hot chocolate. And in 2018, Rick and his daughter Lanie opened Bar Sótano, a speakeasy-style mezcal bar with modern Mexican bar food. Rick’s quick-service Tortas Frontera/Tortazo changed the face of food service at O’Hare International Airport, while their sister concept Tortazo is quickly multiplying through Chicago and NYC.

Rick and his staff have also dedicated themselves to changing the restaurant industry for the better, establishing the Frontera Farmer Foundation in 2003 to support small Midwestern farms. Each year, grants are awarded to farmers for capital improvements to their family farms, encouraging greater production and profitability. To date, the Foundation has awarded nearly 200 grants totaling nearly $3 million.

Rick has received a great number of James Beard Award nominations in many categories, and he has won seven: Midwest Chef of the Year, National Chef of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year, Who’s Who of American Food and Drink, Best Podcast, plus two for his cookbooks. The Government of Mexico has bestowed on Rick the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle–the highest decoration bestowed on foreigners whose work has benefitted Mexico and its people.

And in 2016, he earned the Julia Child Foundation Award, a prestigious honor given to “an individual who has made a profound and significant impact on the way America cooks, eats and drinks.”

The Luck Reunion

AGAINST THE GRAIN BONUS EPISODE 2: The Farmers’ Chef

KURN: Hello and welcome to Against the Grain, the Farm Aid podcast. I’m Jessica Ilyse Kurn.

FOLEY: And I’m Michael Stewart Foley. This is another special bonus episode like the one we did on Farm Aid Board artist Neil Young in December.

KURN: They’re so good. Together. That was Lucas Nelson singing just outside of Austin with his dad Farm aid, President Willie Nelson and his brother Micah Nelson at Farm Aid 2023. Last year we started with this performance because in this bonus episode, we’re taking you to the Nelson family ranch in the Texas hill country, which consequently is just outside of Austin.

FOLEY: The backdrop for this festival called, Luck Reunion, is Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch. This 500 acre ranch is centered around the old movie set that Willie used for his 1986 film, Redheaded Stranger. Yeah.

KURN: And Michael, it was my first time there and I have to say the whole setting from the expansive ranch to the movie set was pretty magical and the movie set includes an old bank building, a saloon and a one room chapel with an iconic single steeple.

FOLEY: Yeah. If you’ve seen the recent documentary Willie Nelson and family, which is out now on Paramount Plus, you’ve seen Willie and Sister Bobby performing in that chapel. You can find information on redheaded stranger and the documentary on our website at www.farmaid.org/podcast

KURN: On this particular day in March. The movie set was the central hub for this five stage day long festival. And the evening before a group of chefs headed up by Chef Michel Nischan prepared a spectacular fundraising dinner, which they called the PotLuck. This benefits a couple of nonprofit organizations including Farm Aid.

FOLEY: This year, one of the superstar chefs who prepared the potluck dinner was Rick Bayless. You may know his name. Rick does a lot of things, but he’s perhaps best known as the chef and owner of Frontera Grill in Chicago. Here he is explaining why he was participating in this event here at the Luck Ranch.

BAYLESS: My name is Rick Bayless and I’m the chef and co-owner of a handful of restaurants mostly in Chicago, and I’m here in Luck, Texas at this amazing ranch that is part movie set and part well, today, amazing stages for musicians and we’re doing this big potluck dinner for 300 people tonight. Lots of chefs have come together to make some pretty amazing food all cooked over open fires. There’s no gas hookups anywhere. So, uh it’s, it’s a style of cooking that I’m just absolutely wild about. One of the things that I have really focused on for many years is uh bringing tradition to the dining table. And I know that people are so into what’s the newest, what’s the most innovative and all of that. But the thing that nourishes our souls, I think is something that has been perfected over generations and generations

FOLEY: In talking to Rick. It was hard not to feel a strong connection because the work he does in Chicago that he started so many years ago, aligned so closely with farm aid’s efforts to build a more just food and farm system.

BAYLESS: I am a strong believer in supporting local farms because when I was living in Mexico, I discovered that whatever region I was in, if they had a really strong local agricultural economy, the food was better in the homes and the restaurants. It was always a great correlation like that. When I came back to the States after living in Mexico for five years, I discovered that Chicago really didn’t have a strong agricultural economy. So we set out to change that we had no farmers markets when our restaurant opened 37 years ago. And uh so I banded together with some chefs and we started an independent farmers market so that we could bring some of that local agricultural economy into the city. And we have developed that now into what I would say is one of the biggest farmers’ markets in the country.

KURN: That hard work paid off. The city of Chicago started to get involved and added markets throughout the city. But Rick found that the farmers didn’t have enough capital to keep up with this new customer base.

BAYLESS: And one time one of the farmers um came to visit us with a bag of spinach in January. And I was like, whoa, I mean, I think probably people know you don’t grow spinach in Chicago, in January. So where’d you get this? And he said, well, I have a hoop house and I know just the right variety of spinach to grow. And he said it freezes slightly during the night, but then the sun heats the hoop house during the day and it perks back up. Well, what happened in that sort of slight freezing and then thawing again is that the plants produced so much more sugar because sugar in the leaves will freeze solid.

And so it was the sweetest spinach I’d ever tasted. And I said to him, don’t tell any other chef in town about this spinach. I want all of this and I want twice this much. And he goes, I could never do that. I said, well, put in another hoop house. He said it’d take me five years to save enough money to put in another hoop house. And I said, what if we lend you the money to buy another hoop house and then you could pay me back in spinach next year.

So that started this no interest loan program that we developed for working with our farmers to help to make them more profitable and productive.

KURN: After five years, Rick turned that idea into a nonprofit organization that raises money and gives out grants to farmers for capital improvements.

FOLEY: Yeah, these grants are for things like fixing water systems, for new tractors, delivery vehicles and things like that. The Frontera Farmer Foundation really changed the landscape for agriculture in the Chicago metro area.

BAYLESS: This will be our 20th year with the Frontera Farmer Foundation and we have invested $3.5 million in the local agricultural economy. And we have done that in small grants, almost all of them between 10 and $15,000 because that’s the kind of investment that kick start. So many of these farmers had a number of years and at the same time, keeps them on the land, I will tell you that if you talk to the family, farmers around the Chicago land area, they will speak super highly about the fact that they never would have been able to be as productive as they are without an investment or maybe two or three investments from the Frontera farmer found because we just have their best interest at heart. And of course, in our restaurants, we use their product. We believe very much as farm aid does in paying a livable wage to these farmers through a, a decent price for their stuff. We’re not trying to undercut people and we work very very closely with a number of farms that are just like our family and around the Chicago land area.

FOLEY: It’s hard to fully describe the importance of this kind of work. Rick and his foundation are transforming a local farm and food economy. This moves us away from a dependence on industrial scale agriculture. It also pays farmers a fair price and brings better quality food to all of our tables. If you want to learn more about our time at the luck reunion, see photos and learn more about everything we’ve discussed in this episode including Rick Bayliss Frontera Farmer Foundation. Go to our website www.farmaid.org/podcast.

KURN: Have you been to one of Rick Bayless restaurants? If so, tell us about it by either emailing us at [email protected] or by contacting us on Farm Aid social media. We’re on lots of platforms like Instagram, Facebook and X.

FOLEY: If you haven’t listened to the full episodes of Against The Grain, you can find those on our website or in your favorite podcast app and please don’t forget to subscribe. It helps our podcast out tremendously.

KURN: This bonus episode of Against The Grain was written and produced by us with sound editing by Endhouse Media. Many thanks as always to Micah Nelson for composing and performing our awesome theme music.

FOLEY: Next month, we’ll be back with another full episode. Thank you for listening and thanks to all the farmers and chefs out there doing the good work.

KURN: We’ll leave you now with another 2023 performance from Willie Nelson & Sons. The full video is up on our YouTube and on our website. Here is “On the Road Again” because that’s where you’ll find Willie for much of the rest of the year. Check out his tour dates at Willienelson.com
