About the ferry routes in and around the United Kingdom

If you are travelling from mainland Europe to the UK, most people will opt for a crossing from France or the Netherlands . There is also a f erry from Spain , but this usually serves as a return trip for Brits who go on holiday to the Iberian Peninsula. There are, of course, also many crossings from Ireland.

The ferry to and from the UK is a pleasant way to travel. You can travel with your own vehicle, and there is much to do on board the ferry. Even on the shorter crossings, you will never be bored. However, it really is a party on the longer crossings on ferries equipped with facilities you also find on a cruise.

Travelling and Staying in the United Kingdom

There are a lot of ferries going to and from the United Kingdom. This way you can travel comfortably to England, Scotland and Wales.

The UK is a versatile island with a rich culture and nature. So you can enjoy busy London, visit a Liverpool football match or just enjoy a peaceful walk through the Scottish landscapes. What you look for is up to you, the ferry will take you there!

Traveling around the UK on arrival by ferry is easy. Most terminals have excellent roads and public transport is often a very good option. For example, you can book tickets with various ferry companies that also include our train ticket. So you can leave the car at the right of the departure port. These tickets are often very affordable.

What people like to know

The ferry companies that you see most often when you book a ferry to the UK are DFDS, P&O, Irish Ferries and Brittany Ferries.

The cheapest way to get there by ferry is to book far in advance and compare multiple crossings. The shorter the crossing, the cheaper it usually is. Skip the ferries with a cabin and travel on unpopular times and days.

If you're only thinking about the cost of getting there by ferry: you can book tickets from France to the UK for a little over €50,-. Travelling from the Netherlands is a bit more expensive, but if you choose Stena Line, you can have a pretty good price for the Hook of Holland-Harwich crossing. Hull-Rotterdam is also a good option , but a bit more expensive as it is often an overnight crossing with a cabin.

Yes , it is usually possible to take the dog on board the boat to The United Kingdom. On the longer crossings, kennels can often be booked or the dog is allowed in the cabin. On short crossings, the four-legged friend can remain in the car. There are some formalities. For example, the dog must have an animal passport, a microchip, timely rabies vaccination, and treatment against tapeworm.

If this is not followed, there is a risk that the dog, cat, or ferret will have to be quarantined for four weeks. More info regarding bringing pets on ferries .

Can you help me? We are a family of 5, and we want to travel to the UK from France in September 2023. We don't have a car, is it possible to ferry without a car? And which ferry to take?

' data-src=

Most people take the ferry from Calais to Dover with P&O Ferries if they ferry travel without a car as with DFDS you can't book without a car (only with a bike) and with Irish Ferries it also doesn't seem possible (they are more unclear about it, when you book as passenger though there don't seem to be any ‘sailings' which is odd).

how quickly can I get from Norway to UK by ferry? 2 adults, a child and a pet, no car.

@hanna Then why go by ferry? I would consider going by plane and/or if you got by Train I would take a look on Trainline.com

Im looking at travelling from Dover to Calais; can I take my two dogs?

Yes on all ships on the Calais-Dover route dogs are allowed.

Would anyone know if there is a ferry crossing from Plymouth to Hull or Sheffield or even to Portsmouth then one from Portsmouth to Hull or Sheffield ?

There isn't a ferry available. The majority would opt for driving or using public transportation. best,

View of Hull Minster in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England

The amazing Hull Minster at the heart of the historic Old Town

The Port of Hull offers a major gateway between Yorkshire and Europe . Around 1 million passengers use the port to get to the Netherlands.

It offers some essential amenities such as a café, a small store and accessible restrooms. Plenty of paid parking spaces are also available in front of the terminal.

Ferries from Hull port: schedules and tickets

The port of Hull connects England with Rotterdam, the Netherlands . The ferry route to Rotterdam is operated by P&O Ferries. Specifically:

 • Ferry from Hull to Rotterdam : the ferry crossing between Hull and Rotterdam , is operated with up to 7 weekly crossings all year round. The crossing lasts from 11 to 11.5 hours .

Where is the ferry port in Hull?

The Port of Hull is situated on the north bank of the Humber Estuary just 32 km from the North Sea. The ferries operate from terminal 1 at King George Dock , off Hedon Road, about 5 km east of the center.

How to get to Hull port?

Getting to Hull port is very easy. If you are traveling by car , the port is located on the A63. Alternatively, a bus service from bus stand D near the St Stephen's shopping center and Hull Paragon Interchange rail station in the city center runs to the ferry terminal. It takes about 15 minutes .

Tip : if you’re traveling on foot you must check-in via terminal 2.

Yachts and sailing boats seen docked at Hull Marina

Hull Marina in the city of Hull, UK

Kingston upon Hull, often abbreviated to Hull, is an English seaport with a proud seafaring tradition . The city sits on the River Hull where it joins the estuary of the River Humber.

A handful of museums in Hull highlight the city's long and rich history . Even though it was the most bombed English city in World War II, apart from London, Hull has since rebuilt itself to become a thriving center of culture in East Yorkshire. A weekend of exploring the city’s quaint Old Town, impressive marina and architectural treasures will make it perfectly clear why it was voted the UK City of Culture in 2017 .

Outside the city center, Hull is only a short distance from some of Britain's most picturesque countryside and expansive coastlines ideal for nature lovers. The best of all worlds.

How to get to Hull

It's easy to get to Hull by car, train, plane, or ferry. To travel by car , take the M62 from the west, the A1 from the south and the A1 and M62 from Scotland. In addition, there’s a direct train service from London that takes less than 3 hours. Hull Trains also operate from major cities in the west including Manchester, York and Sheffield.

To get there by plane , you can catch a flight to either Humberside airport (30 minutes from Hull), Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport (1 hour) or Leeds Bradford Airport (1.5 hours) for intercontinental flights.

Lastly, to travel to Hull by ferry , Rotterdam in the Netherlands is your go-to port!

What to do in Hull

When visiting Hull, prepare yourself for a full day of exploring quirky museums, charming pubs and picturesque buildings on the banks of the Humber River. Start your holidays by heading to the Old Town of Hull , the city’s central district which retains a sense of the prosperous Victorian era.

Stroll through its well preserved cobbled streets and visit 2 of the city’s main attractions, the huge aquarium called The Deep and Hull Minster . Other hidden attractions to find in the picturesque Old Town include the Fish Trail and the George Hotel, which has England’s smallest window . Then head to Hull Marina and step aboard the Spurn Lightship. If you’re interested in maritime history, the Hull Maritime Museum is another great place to visit.

Fancy a trip to the beach? Head to the breathtaking Yorkshire Coast for some of Britain's most picturesque beaches, walks and sunsets. Alternatively, follow the footpath across the Humber Bridge and enjoy the panoramic views of the river.

Finally, we recommend attending some of the festivals Hull has to offer, such as the Hull Trinity Beer Festival in April, the Hull Jazz Festival in July and the Hull Fair in October. Catching a show at Hull New Theatre , one of the leading touring theaters in the UK, is another brilliant way to spend an evening.

Sightseeing in Hull

With a remarkable collection of city-run museums and architecture that allows you to travel back in time, Hull is the city where culture never sleeps. Here are some of the most popular attractions for sightseeing in and around Hull:

 • The Deep submarium, standing at the edge of the port, with great views across the Humber
 • Ferens Art Gallery
 • The Maritime Museum , celebrating Hull’s long maritime traditions
 • The Streetlife Museum , showcasing rare cars and a 1940s street reconstruction
 • The Wilberforce House , covering the history of slavery and the campaign against it
 • The Arctic Corsair , a nationally significant deep-sea trawler built in 1960
 • Hull Minster , England's largest parish church
 • The King William Statue III , one of Hull's most distinctive landmarks installed in 1734
 • The Spurn Lightship , guided ships safely through the notorious Humber estuary

Fun fact : an unusual feature of Hull is that it is the only place in the UK with white telephone boxes rather than red ones. You can spot a few scattered around the Old Town.

Nightlife in Hull

Come nightfall, especially at weekends, Hull gets lively thanks to its young student population and several streets lined with bars, pubs, cafés, and clubs. There is no better place to go bar hopping than Newlands Avenue .

If you’d rather spend the day in British pubs drinking pints, head to Hull’s Old Town which is known for having a large number of pubs within close proximity. For a rich and historic pub crawl , start at the Lion and Key on the High Street.

Food in Hull

Besides the beautiful old English pubs, Hull’s Old Town is also characterized by a stellar dining scene . The city is kind of a culinary hub catering for foodies of all tastes. Here are a few finger-licking dishes that visitors should try when in Hull:

 • savory pattie (deep-fried potato seasoned with sage and served with chips and mushy peas)
 • fish and chips
 • Yorkshire pudding
 • Yorkshire curd tart
 • parkin (cake consisting of flour, oatmeal, black treacle, and butter)
 • fat rascals (traditional Yorkshire cakes mixed with dried fruit)

Tip : if 2 days of tasty street food, fresh local produce and delicious beverages sounds like heaven to you, make sure to visit the Yum! Food Festival , which takes place at Hull Marina in August.

The 9 Most Scenic Ferry Rides In Europe

H aving grown up near and on the water, I love anything to do with boats. That said, you will probably never find me on a large cruise ship because I like flexibility and hate crowds when traveling. After the pandemic more than ever. But there are alternatives that give you the thrill of being on the water, feeling the wind in your hair, standing at the bow, looking ahead at your new destination from the water, which I think is just so much more fun than landing at an airport.

Despite my dislike of cruises, I have a distinct love of ferries. Go figure. A short, purposeful, and more often than not, cheap ferry filled with locals thrills me. It does not matter where I go, if there is a funicular or a ferry, I’ll be on it. And if it can take the place of a flight, even better, because just like with train travel, travel on a ferry it is just as much about the journey as it is about the destination.

Here is a selection of ferry trips within Europe that take you from one country to the next, across various seas, along rivers, or simply from one end of a city to the other. All have been chosen for their ease of use, great scenery along the way, convenience, or their way of providing an inexpensive alternative to a touristy boat trip.

Step aboard, and bon voyage .

1. Countless Ferries In Istanbul

One of the reasons that Istanbul is such a beautiful destination is not only its extensive history, but also the fact that it stretches across the Golden Horn waterway, the Bosphorus strait, and along the Sea of Marmara, all of which are crisscrossed by countless ferries. Hopping on a selection of these ferries should be near the top of your to-do list when exploring Istanbul. Most leave from the inner-city hub of Eminonu by the Galata Bridge. From here, you can catch a ferry to the colorful suburb of Balat; across to Uskudar on the Asian side; or up the Bosphorus toward the Black Sea. All tickets are cheap and easily bought at ticketing machines, and these normal commuter ferries will allow you to see all the sights from the water, travel past the smaller islands like Maiden’s Tower, and enjoy the sunshine while you go — all without paying the extortionate prices for the organized tourist harbor cruises.

Pro Tip: Plan for a stop in Ortakoy to see the pretty mosque and enjoy the little market with its food stalls.

2. Stockholm To Helsinki

Sweden to finland.

Traveling from the Swedish capital of Stockholm to the Finish capital of Helsinki by overnight ferry is probably the closest you will come to a cruise in this selection. Competing lines Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line have decked out their ships with saunas, restaurants serving local delicacies, and various other comforts. The ferries leave in the afternoon and arrive the next morning around 10 a.m., so you have plenty of time to stay on deck to take in the Swedish archipelago, with its countless small islands dotted with tiny, wooden huts, and also enjoy the ship itself. You can get a good night’s sleep before heading back on deck for the arrival in Finland.

Pro Tip: It is best to have either an early dinner, straight after departure, or a late one, after sunset, because the second and third hours after departure from Stockholm are the most scenic.

3. Venice To Burano

When in Venice, do as the locals do and catch a vaporetto , or waterbus, to the colorful little island of Burano. Vaporetti 12 and 14 leave from either San Zaccaria (near St. Mark’s Basilica) or Fondamente Nove and head to Burano, stopping at the glass-making island of Murano (with a chance to find some sea glass ) and continuing onto Mazzorbo and Torcello. Sitting on this large waterbus, you can spend all day on the waters of the Venetian Lagoon, enjoying the views and the other islands as you go. Buy a day ticket (or a 3-day ticket, depending on how long you are staying for) to get unlimited access to public transport. This way, you can hop on and off, spending a few happy hours exploring the various islands.

Pro Tip: Please note that since January 2023, Venice has levied a tourist tax on both guests staying overnight and daytrippers.

4. Algeciras To Tangier

Spain to morocco.

The Strait of Gibraltar is the stretch of water that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and divides Europe from Africa. On a clear day, you can spot one continent while standing on the other, and there are plenty of ferries making a quick connection between the ports. While there are many other crossings, my favorite ferry route is between Algeciras and Tangier because you sail right past Gibraltar with great views of the rock, and Tangier is a superb setting-off point for exploring Morocco .

Pro Tip: There are several ferry companies doing this route, with around 30 sailings every day. You can choose from fast, 1.5-hour crossings to slower ones, taking 2.5 hours. All ferries are open to foot passengers as well as vehicles.

5. Barcelona To Mallorca

While you are in Spain, you might want to check out the Balearic Islands. One good way of connecting from the mainland is to take the ferry from Barcelona to Mallorca or maybe Ibiza, depending on your preference. The crossings take six to seven hours, allowing you a day on the Mediterranean Sea to enjoy the sun, sea, and sights.

Pro Tip: There are two ferry operators that offer different itineraries, so you could opt for a night crossing in a cabin if you have connections to consider on your return trip

6. Saint-Malo To Jersey Island

France to uk.

Setting off from beautiful Saint-Malo and taking the 1.5-hour-long, twice-daily sailing to the Bailiwick of Jersey is a lovely experience, especially once you get closer to the island. Condor Ferries operates a no-nonsense, easy-to-use ferry that’s open to both foot passengers and vehicles, with restaurants and shopping onboard.

Pro Tip: Despite the short distance, it is worth paying a few dollars for an upgrade to the Horizon Lounge , as you will get seats with great views from the inside.

7. Athens To Santorini

Sailing through the Greek Islands by cruise ship is a popular route, and not surprisingly so. The beauty of the islands set against the Mediterranean Sea is unbeatable. But traveling by ferry between the islands allows you far more flexibility at a more affordable price. Head off from the Athens port of Piraeus and head for that oh-so-picturesque island of Santorini . Yes, Santorini is touristy, but you simply cannot beat those white and blue buildings nestled in the mountains. And on the way, you will spot many other islands and can enjoy being on the turquoise sea — while contemplating which island to hop to next. Ferryhopper has more on ferrying from Athens to Santorini here .

Pro Tip: There are many operators and ships, including slower car ferries and faster catamarans and hydrofoils. Choose carefully, as some of the faster ferries do not have open decks, and you will spend your time indoors, missing the views.

8. Split To Dubrovnik

Croatia has arguably the best coastline in Europe. It’s full of beaches, bays, islands, and medieval seaside towns, and the best way to enjoy the sights is by boat. There are plenty of organized tours and cruises, but the local ferries do the same job with more flexibility at a lower cost. Consider the trip from the seaside resort town of Split to the fortified city of Dubrovnik for maximum impact. You will not be able to pry yourself away from the views, I promise. Regular ferries operate up and down the coast, and this is just one option of many.

Pro Tip: Dubrovnik gets terribly crowded, so you might want to time your sailing to arrive in the afternoon, when the crowds start to thin out.

9. Central London To Greenwich

This isn’t a cruise ship but a waterbus, albeit one with the best seats in the house. Taking the waterbus from central London toward Greenwich is a veritable sightseeing tour that offers views of Westminster, St Paul’s, the Globe Theatre, the many bridges, Tate Modern, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and many more, all at the price of a bus ticket. Here is the map of the river (and all the things you’ll see along the way).

Pro Tip: If you are spending a few days in London, invest in an Oyster card for all public transport options.

Orkney to trial two electric ferries for three years

The multi-million-pound funding has come from the UK government's Zero Emission Vessel and Infrastructure (ZEVI) fund, which aims to boost the country's decarbonisation efforts.

Two electric ferries will go on trial in Orkney thanks to a £15m funding boost.

The vessels - which use hydrofoil technology to lift the hull out of the water to navigate above the waves - are being supplied by Artemis Technologies for a three-year pilot.

The smaller 12m ferry will operate a year-round service around the inner north isles, while the larger 24m boat will transfer passengers and light cargo around Eday, Stronsay, Sanday and Westray.

The 12m vessel is expected to arrive in March next year, while the larger boat is due to be delivered in 2025.

The fully-electric vessels will remain in the ownership of Orkney Ferries after the trial has concluded.

Charging infrastructure will also be installed as part of the Electric Orkney project, which is a partnership between Orkney Islands Council, Artemis Technologies and EMEC.

'World first' driverless bus service in Scotland

Orkney Islands Council leader James Stockan said: "Whilst this is tremendous news, this latest development must not be confused with our drive to secure funding for replacement ferries.

"This work is about looking at how we can, in the future, decarbonise our fleet - a key point of discussion with the Scottish government.

"Securing two vessels of this smaller size is the first stage in that process, allowing us to see how electric vessels might work, with a view to potentially upscaling in the future when further funding packages are in place."

A week on an undiscovered Greek island for under £400

Untapped thassos is perfect for beaches, boat trips and laid-back tavernas — and just a short ferry-hop from the mainland.

A Greek Orthodox monastery on Thassos

T o Thassos! Never heard of it? Well, neither have many Greek holiday enthusiasts, since few UK airlines serve the nearest airport, Kavala (on the mainland), and it’s a 40-minute ferry hop to get there. In the north Aegean, 150 miles northeast of Thessaloniki and connected to the mainland by boats from Keramoti, this small island is a treasure trove of pine-forested coast, turquoise swimming holes and simple, low-key accommodation. It’s the antidote to the scene on mainstream Mykonos and neighbours. Its relative obscurity means it’s our little secret — and a great place to sniff out a sub-£400 holiday in already-popular May.

For those living on the Greek mainland, Thassos is a honeypot of great beaches — in the warmer months, they take to the local ferries for day trips to some of the island’s best: Aliki, Marble, Livadi, Medalia. There are also historic mountain villages to seek out, and even an August honey festival. Like other northerly Greek islands, including Skiathos and Skopelos, this is an especially green spot, thick with pine forest and sheltered bays, with none of the mass-tourism plastic or yacht pollution of the more popular islands. It feels worlds apart from the dry, rocky landscapes of the Cyclades.

For a £393pp package including flights and transfers, your tour operator is Tui — which means 20kg luggage is included. You’ll stay near a sandy beach at the mellow, three-star Hotel Zafira, in Skala Rachoniou, a sleepy coastal town of one main square and a fishermen’s harbour. Your studio room will have a balcony or terrace and there’s a simple pool area with views of the surrounding olive groves and mountains, plus a snack bar for refreshments. Local tavernas are within walking distance, and boat trips around the island’s bays can be taken from Thassos Town, also known as Limenas or simply “the Port”. Departure is at the end of May, when temperatures are already in the mid-twenties with swimmably warm waters, though by evening you may need a jacket or cardigan.

Unlike many Greek islands, Thassos has a decent bus service, with operates between the main points on the island — such as Limenas to the traditional mountainside village of Panagia, or southern Limenaria to the ancient settlement of Theologos. For walkers, late spring and early summer are still cool enough to get out and about on foot: try the relatively flat, four-mile coast walk from Skala Prinos, just south of your hotel, to Skala Sotiros, or tackle the footpaths around the base of Mount Ipsarion, the island’s highest peak.

Don’t expect any rosé-sloshing beach clubs or towering mega-resorts here: this 150 square mile island is distinctly low-key (though Arriba Beach Bar will supply you with a lounger, an iced coffee and a reggae soundtrack beneath the pines, if you want a bit of a social scene). This is a place to switch off, enjoy nature, go walking and eat traditional Greek dinners by the sea.

The Atrium Hotel in Potos

Upgrade to a week at Thassos’s four-star Atrium Hotel in Potos, on a B&B basis. Also facing a gleaming sandy beach, the Atrium has rooms and food that are a little more modern and refined, with generous adults’ and children’s pools just steps from the sea, a Mediterranean restaurant and a top-notch buffet breakfast. You have the Captain’s Bar for evening cocktails, and palm-thatched parasols dot an unspoilt bay. The village of Potos is known for being a little livelier than many, with one of the island’s most popular beaches and plenty of tavernas and bars to choose from. The £1,000 holiday

Elegant Apartments in Pefkari

Most of the accommodation on Thassos consists of no-frills apartments or chilled-out beach hotels, but the odd glam apartment does exist. East of Limenaria on the south coast, Elegant Apartments are 11 studios arranged around a shared pool — on the small side, but you’re only a five-minute tree-lined walk from Pefkari beach. Decor is modern with geometric art on the walls, clean-lined bathrooms and kitchenettes; each studio has a balcony or terrace. Details Seven nights’ self-catering for two from £990pp, including flights and transfers, departing on June 5 (sunvil.co.uk)
