It’s been almost two months since we threw M’s “first trip around the sun” first birthday party at our house and I’m only just now getting around to posting about it!! With his birthday being in November, it has kind of become an extension of the chaotic holiday season for us 😆.

I was planning this party for a while before it was actually time to throw it, and the amount of times I searched “first trip around the sun birthday ideas” is slightly absurd. I’m such a perfectionist, so obviously this was no exception!

We had been deciding between a Where the Wild Things Are “Wild One” birthday theme and the First Trip Around the Sun birthday theme, but I’m glad we ultimately went with first trip around the sun! It ended up being so cute and fun.

Instead of buying themed decorations, I decided to just purchase a printable set of decorations on Etsy ( Here’s a link to the one I got–it was so amazing!). A lot of printer ink and cardstock paper was used, but it was the best decision for me to do the printable stuff because I was able to personalize so much of it.

First Trip Around the Sun Birthday Ideas: Invitation

We used an awesome Etsy printable decorations bundle by PaperMinxPrintables and it included a regular printable invitation and a digital option. We decided to go with the digital invite and we just texted/emailed our guest list the invitations.

It is very unlike me to do digital invitations, but it was perfect for M’s first birthday since the guest list was mostly just family. We were able to edit the text and the colors of the invitation, but we didn’t change the colors. They matched with our theme already.

First Trip Around the Sun Birthday Ideas: Outfits

For M’s First Trip Around the Sun birthday, I decided to get cute “Mom” and “Dad” space-themed shirts. I got them on Etsy! I also got M a shirt that said “One” on it. They turned out adorable.

M also had a long sleeved onesie under his tee because it was pretty chilly that day! I got the onesie in a pack of space-themed onesies from Hudson Baby. Here they are on Amazon!

First Trip Around the Sun Birthday Ideas: Decorations

Like I mentioned before, we bought a bundle of printable decorations on Etsy for M’s First Trip Around the Sun birthday. Everything in the bundle was editable, which was awesome!

We designed the poster using the printable decorations bundle we got, then we had it printed at Staples. The ONE balloon boxes are from Amazon. You have to do a little assembling for the boxes, but it’s overall pretty easy!

The cute rocket balloon is also from Amazon. I had seen it in some images on Pinterest and on Etsy, and I became somewhat obsessed with obtaining it (😂) because I thought it was too cute.

I bought this balloon arch on Etsy and assembled the whole thing myself. It was quite an experience! Blowing up the balloons was the hardest part, and I’m glad I got an electric balloon inflater ( like this one here ) for that part. Putting the actual arch together was fun for me, but I might just be a weirdo!

The number 1 balloon is from Amazon and so is the spaceman balloon . I also added in the star & moon balloons throughout my decor.

The high chair banner is from the printable decorations bundle we got. Then I just tied some streamers onto the sides in the theme colors.

The cute little first trip around the sun birthday crown is also from Etsy! My son hated wearing it, so it didn’t get much use, but it’s definitely super adorable and well made!!

I used M’s monthly photos to create this milestone banner and then I hung it on our fireplace mantel in the living room. The design for the banner was part of the Etsy bundle we got, so I just went in and added the photos on my computer, then printed out the finished banner. Super easy!

We had this cute milestone poster that I made using the Etsy decorations bundle. I got it printed at Staples and then had to back it on actual pasteboard. I tried to use this little easel I got from Dollar Tree to hold it up, but that idea was pretty unsuccessful (as you’ll notice in some other photos!). Ya can’t win ’em all!

The Happy Birthday banner was in the first trip around the sun birthday decorations bundle from Etsy. I also used the planet images in the printable decorations bundle, enlarged them on my computer, and printed them out to use as decorations. I love how the planets turned out looking!

First Trip Around the Sun Birthday Ideas: Cake & Food

In an attempt to save a little money, I decided to go ahead and make M’s cake and cupcakes for his first trip around the sun birthday party. This is very unlike me, because I am really NOT a baker. However, they ended up turning out great, and making the cupcakes made me discover that I actually like baking. I started baking some other tasty stuff after this and now I have a new hobby that I have no time for!

Full disclosure: the cake definitely ended up leaning a bit, so it was far from perfect. But for my first cake, not horrible! I used 3 4-inch round cake pans and made the cake 3 layers (hence the leaning!).

To make the cake and the cupcakes, I just doctored up some cake mix! I started with funfetti cake mix. I added one extra egg than the directions call for (the directions said use 3, so I used 4). Instead of oil, I used melted butter and I used twice the amount (the directions said 1/2 cup oil, but I used 1 cup melted butter instead).

I used Satin Ice Buttercream Icing Mix to make the icing. I iced the cupcakes using an icing bag and a star icing tip. Then, I added some gold sprinkles!

The cupcakes were absolutely DELICIOUS! Everyone loved them and they were slightly shocked to hear I had made them!

The cake topper is from Etsy and the number 1 candle is from Dollar Tree. I got the edible stars on Etsy as well!

The cupcake toppers were also a part of the amazing first trip around the sun birthday decorations printable bundle on Etsy! The tiered tray for the cupcakes is cardboard and I got it on Amazon.

I have a tiered tray that I made, but I ended up using it in the other room for the party and somehow I took exactly zero pictures of the area where the actual food was. I was having wayyyy too much fun setting up all of my on-theme snacks on the dessert table 😆. The labels were part of the decorations printable bundle, I just edited them to say what I wanted them to say.

We got these adorable planet cake pops on Etsy as well! Perfect for a first trip around the sun birthday theme! And they were also delish.

Here’s your reminder that it really doesn’t matter what the birthday baby’s cake looks like, because it’s going to get destroyed in a hot second!

First Trip Around the Sun Birthday Ideas: Activities

We had a few activities to try and keep people somewhat occupied! I made this personalized box for M and we used it as a time capsule for his first birthday. We had everyone write him a letter and fill out a cute little questionnaire making guesses as to what he will be in the future! We put them in the time capsule box for him to open when he turns 18.

In addition to the letters, we also put all of his birthday cards in there, his shirt that he wore, and all of his birthday decorations that would fit in there. I also had a few things from his baby shower that I put in there as well. I had planned to make a little newspaper telling about current events to put in there as well, but I haven’t gotten a chance to do it yet. Maybe my next project??

We also had a moon bounce (on-theme!) in our backyard for the kids at the party! It was a little chilly that day, but everyone still went out there and had a good bounce. My little one year old LOVED it!

My sweet little baby is growing up! He had such an awesome time at his birthday party and I’m so glad he loved it so much.

It was definitely a lot of work planning and decorating and making things for M’s first trip around the sun birthday party, but it was all soooo worth it! After the party was over I was kind of like “Okay, what do I do now????” 🤣

Time to get moving onto my next craft project, I guess!

I made the cake and cupcakes the day before the party. I stored them in airtight containers in the fridge unfrosted, then I frosted them the morning of the party. For the icing, I just used a hand mixer with the buttercream icing mix!

I labeled the sour gummy worms as “space worms”.

Saturday 20th April - Funchal

I managed to sleep for a few hours as the alarm was ringing at 12.30am. Left the house 2.15am to Bristol Airport, the journey was smooth and uneventful as no traffic on the road. There was no queue at the EasyJet bag drop (3.30pm) with no delays in security. The departure lounge was initially quiet but became very busy later on.

The 6.25am EasyJet flight boarded on time with a 3hrs 15 min flight time. The Airbus A321 neo the largest aircraft on EasyJet’s fleet was 5 years old and the flight was smooth and uneventful. I sat in row 28B which was one row in front of the emergency exit. This was a very unusual seat as there was a large space (the size of a seat) on the window side with two seats before the main corridor. The other seats had a 3-3 configuration. After an excellent flight landed at 9.50am, 20 minutes early.

After a short ten minute wait at passport control the baggage came off the plane very fast. Pre booked a private transfer with Madeira Airport Transfers, 24 euros. The driver was waiting in arrivals and the journey was fast and comfortable, arrived in the hotel at 11am. Unfortunately, an early check in wasn’t possible so walked into Funchal old town and had a drink and snack at O Tacho Da Velha restaurant on Rua Dom Carlos. I only ordered a drink and a chicken toasted sandwich but had to send the sandwich back as the chicken was extremely hard and the bread was dry and tasteless. Ended up returning to the Porto Santa Maria and enjoyed a lunchtime snack and spent a few hours relaxing around the pool. The weather was very pleasant with a mixture of sunshine and cloud & felt warmer than 23C. For further information on the hotel, see review below:-

Sunday 21st April - Funchal

Spent most of the day walking and returning to various places from my previous trips. Walked from the Porto Santa Maria along the promenade towards the lido area, Funchal looked as beautiful as ever with the palm trees, flowers and ocean views. Excellent weather with lots of sunshine. There were no cruise ships in the port and not many tourists around. Walked up the steep hill by the Pestana Carlton to the lido area passing Reid’s and the Cliff Bay . Called into the Porto Mare (stayed there for 10 days on my last visit nearly 2 years ago) and walked around the pool which looked as beautiful as ever. Also visited the Pestana Grand (stayed there four times), noticed the plants have grown in the garden, they were planted when the palm trees were cut down due to bad weather over three years ago. I will always have a soft spot for the Pestana Grand but it appears you can only book half board which is a shame.

Enjoyed a coffee in the Magic tea house, the butterflies are still flying around and prices continue to be very reasonable. Returned to Funchal along the coastal promenade and enjoyed the pleasant views of the ocean with lots of palm trees and flowers. Joined the main road back to Funchal and the weather started to cloud over but the temperature was perfect for walking (23C) with no wind. Called into the Beer House on the main promenade (delicious ice cream) and returned to the hotel. Didn’t venture far in the evening as enjoyed a light snack in the hotel. Excellent food and reasonable prices.

Monday 22nd April - Camara de Lobos

Caught the local Rodoeste bus to Camara de Lobos, see timetable below:-

Purchased the bus tickets from the kiosk next to the bus stop or you can purchase from the driver 2.20E. The weather fluctuated between long cloudy and sunny periods with a comfortable temperature 23C. The journey took 30 minutes due to heavy traffic, lots of bumps and twists and turns along the coastal road.

I have visited Camara De Lobos over ten times during the last 20 years and noticed a big difference as it more commercialised and much busier with lots of tourists. It’s the first time I’ve seen a very long queue of people waiting for a photograph by the statue of Winston Churchill. On the positive side it’s still pretty with lots of ocean views, just busier. Enjoyed a coffee in the Pestana Churchill Bay which was very pleasant and walked up the steps towards Funchal and enjoyed the beautiful views of the boats and ocean. The walkway to Funchal is still closed by the Orca Praia hotel. Walked as far as I could and caught the bus back to Funchal.

Funchal was very busy as there were two cruise ships with an additional 9,500 visitors on the AIDAcosma (German ship) and Marella Explorer . I looked at the cruise schedules and deliberately escaped the city which was an excellent idea. The restaurants were jam packed with visitors so ate in hotel which was a perfect and relaxing end to the day. For further information about the cruise ships, see link below:-

Tuesday 23rd April - Botanical Gardens.

Travelled to the Botanical Gardens by local bus (number 31) which leaves from Avenida Do Mar, opposite the Palacio S Lourenco on the promenade side. It’s also possible to catch bus 31A & 29, fare 1 euro 95 & tickets are purchased on the bus. Journey time approximately 20 minutes. Entrance fee 7 euros 50 cents. My last visit to the botanical gardens was in June 2005 & I couldn’t remember a great deal.

The gardens have more than 2,500 exotic plants from various parts of the world and covers an area of 80,000 m². Lots to see and do but you really need good mobility (steps, uneven ground, steep slopes) to see them at their best. In addition to the beautiful plants and flowers the views of the Bay of Funchal are fantastic, could even see the cruise ships in the background. The weather was glorious with lots of sunshine (24C). Walked around the gardens for over two hours and enjoyed a drink on the outside terrace, prices were reasonable. I had an excellent visit, the gardens exceeded my expectations but I would try to visit on a sunny day.

When returning to Funchal I walked up the main high street Avenida Arriaga and enjoyed an ice cream in the Ritz cafe which was very pleasant. Walked around the Municipal Gardens which were very pretty and colourful with different types of plants and strolled back the hotel.

Wednesday 24th April - Jasmin Tea House

Started the day with an early morning walk to see the sunrise directly outside the hotel. The sky had different shades of oranges and red with different reflections. The ocean was calm and still with expensive yachts and two big cruise liners on the opposite side. I also saw a large moon in the far distance above the Cliff Bay. Apart from a friendly Portuguese woman taking photos and the odd runner there weren’t any people around, the best time of day to take photos. The weather was similar to yesterday, lots of sunshine with a temperature of 26C.

After breakfast had a walk along the main promenade and saw the Cunard Queen Elizabeth cruise liner. When the cruise passengers started to arrive in large tour groups caught the 47 bus (final destination São João Latrão) to Jasmine Tea House on the Levada Dos Tornos halfway between Monte and Camacha. The bus fare was 1 euro 95 cents, journey time approximately 20 minutes. The stop for the tea house was nearly at the end of the line but a kind local woman pressed the bell to stop the bus. The bus was half empty & was full of locals with no tourists. The tea house is located on a quiet mountain road in the middle of nowhere with no shops or restaurants close by. The bus stop is directly outside the tea house at the bottom of the short steep driveway.

On arrival, climbed some steep steps (some uneven ground with a hand rail) and enjoyed a short levada walk which was very pretty with lots of green trees, plants and flowers with great views. Walked the same route back and enjoyed a snack and drink in the tea house. The tea house has a small garden with beautiful views and was very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. There were only two other guests in the tea house and I recognised them as I asked them if the Camara de Lobos promenade was open a few days ago, what a small world! Prices in the tea house very reasonable. I had a tea and two fruit scones with jam and butter. The scones were fresh and crumbly but the texture was not like an English scone as more like a cake. The tea was served in a china cup with a bright blue tea pot and red milk jug. There are also light snack options and various cakes including apple, lemon and banana all 3 euros. There is a blackboard with the bus times back to Funchal. I had an excellent visit and would definitely recommend if you want to visit somewhere different with not many tourists.

Thursday 25th April - Funchal to Madeira with EasyJet

Time to wave goodbye to Madeira and travel back to Bristol. Madeira Airport Transfers arrived a few minutes early at 8am for the journey back to the airport. The roads were extremely quiet due to a bank holiday and the journey back to airport was fast and smooth. There was a small queue in the EasyJet bag drop but security was fast. I watched planes land on the outside terrace, saw the incoming aircraft land early. A perfect day for flying with a mixture of sun and cloud with no wind. After passport control boarding was very disorganised and confusing with long queues and people standing everywhere in a small space with not many seats.

The flight departed promptly at 11.30am with a flying time of 3hrs 15 min. The aircraft was under a month old and the flight was smooth. Landed in Bristol 10 minutes early at 2.50pm. Another excellent flight with EasyJet, 10/10.

NASA begins delivering 1st Artemis Moon Trees to be planted across United States

The trees began as seeds flown around the moon on NASA's uncrewed Artemis 1 mission in 2022.

The first woman slated to launch to the moon has delivered one of the first trees grown from seeds recently flown there. NASA astronaut Christina Koch presented a loblolly pine "Moon Tree" sapling to her home state of North Carolina on Wednesday (April 24). The tree began as one of more than 1,000 seeds that were flown around the moon on NASA's uncrewed Artemis 1 mission in 2022. "With the planting of an Artemis Moon Tree today at the governor's mansion, North Carolina is firmly planting the roots of exploration for generations to come," said Koch, who is targeted to launch in late 2025 as a member of the Artemis 2 crew . Koch's presentation marked one of the first deliveries to a new generation of Moon Tree stewards, whom NASA has selected from across the country. Koch's alma mater, White Oak High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina, is another of the chosen recipients. "I used to dream about going to space by looking up through the pine trees, and so, it was just a really great symbol of our commitment to North Carolina, North Carolina's commitment back to NASA, and all the amazing universities here that produce people for the aerospace industry," said Koch according to The Daily News , the local newspaper in Jacksonville. "That whole Artemis generation that's coming up here and that we can't wait to see exploring space."

In addition to the loblolly pines, which are native to North Carolina, the Orion spacecraft that flew on Artemis 1 also carried sycamore, sweetgum, Douglas-fir and giant sequoia seeds on its 270,000-mile (435,000 kilometers), 25-day journey. Back on Earth , the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service oversaw that the seeds germinated and grew into seedlings for their distribution as Artemis Moon Trees. In August 2023, NASA put out a call for interested educational and community organizations to apply to grow a Moon Tree . The space agency chose recipients based on their ability to care for the various tree species and their position to use the tree's growth as an outreach tool in their neighborhoods, cities or states. "Together, NASA and the Forest Service will deliver a piece of science history to communities across our nation," said Mike Kincaid, associate administrator of NASA's Office of STEM (science, engineering technology and math) engagement. "Through this partnership, future explorers, scientists and environmentalists will have the opportunity to nurture and be inspired by these Artemis artifacts in the community where they live, work and learn." NASA is notifying the selected institutions in waves, with the first now underway, followed by groups in the fall of this year, spring 2025 and fall 2025. The agency plans to keep a record of the recipients on its website , noting the species of tree they received and their planting cycle. Moon Tree hosts will also be invited to engage with the public at quarterly virtual gatherings beginning this summer. A full list of the first, almost 50 recipients has yet to be made public, but according to a social media post , Mary Chapa Academy in Greenfield, California received a sapling on Thursday (April 25).

The idea for the Artemis 1 Moon Trees was grown out of a similar project carried out by Apollo 14 command module pilot Stuart Roosa, who as a former Forest Service smoke jumper launched with hundreds of tree seeds in his personal preference kit on the 1971 moon mission. 

The Apollo Moon Tree seedlings were planted across the U.S., with many becoming part of the country's bicentennial celebration in 1976. 

"A new era of Moon trees will one day stand tall in communities across America," said Bill Nelson, NASA's administrator. "NASA is bringing the spirit of exploration back down to Earth because space belongs to everyone. The Artemis Generation will carry forth these seedlings that will be fertile ground for creativity, inspiration, and discovery for years to come."
