Freedom Center Tours

Please join us for Freedom Center Tours! They will be held on Thursday evening before the show, from 5 pm – 7 pm and are free of charge. If you can make the time to tour this facility, please do! You will be amazed at what this group of volunteers has accomplished! The Freedom Center Tours will showcase the opportunities which are provided to area Veterans. The Veterans Freedom Center is an all-volunteer center for Veterans from the Tri-State area (Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin) to gather. They have an awesome shop area  where Vets can go to learn scroll sawing and pen turning. They offer a crafts area where Vets can put together kits such as bird houses and whirly-gigs. They have an exercise room, a pool table and a kitchen area where Vets can get together to just hang out and talk. They provide supplies for all activities free of charge to the Vets. The Freedom Center is run independently and does not receive funding from state or federal sources – they carry on fundraisers year-round to pay for the center and their activities. The Dubuque area, as well as our scroll saw community, have been generous in providing support for this worthwhile cause. Although the founders of The Freedom Center keep a low profile and don’t seek recognition, it was started by a very dedicated group of guys who are committed to helping their fellow Vets—they are an awesome bunch!!!

The Freedom Center Volunteers also put in countless hours helping to plan, promote and pull together the Midwest Scroll Saw Trade Show. You will find them all around the Trade Show helping with everything from selling tickets at the entrance to organizing a program for the Friday evening dinner, to running the Scroll Saw Corral and Pen Turning areas. Be sure to thank them for their service to our country and for their willingness to help out fellow Veterans and our scroll saw community!

What People Are Saying

Yelp review.

The Freedom Trail is one of the iconic touristy things to do in Boston, and there's a reason for that. I did the full trail many, many years ago but decided to go with this shorter, more compact trail with our family. The 1.5 hour length is the right duration for kids, and our guide, Jeremiah Poope (his actual last name!), kept it interesting the entire time. He has been a tour guide in Boston for many years, and he had a ton of interesting stories and facts beyond the typical revolutionary war factoids.

We had a wonderful time and your guides were wonderful. They were energetic, informed, and brought history to life. Thank you once again!

TripAdvisor Review

We only had 1 day to explore downtown Boston, and this tour was a great way to see several different sites, learn about history, and get a bit of walking in. We were a few minutes late for the start of the 1pm tour but easily able to catch up and join in.. Our tour guide was fantastic! One member of my group uses a wheelchair, and the guide was great about leading the WHOLE tour through accessible entrances to sites and to sidewalks with curb cuts so that all of us could participate without feeling singled out.

Great tour with Isaiah Thomas! Great local guide who was very engaging and a walking encyclopedia of Boston history. It was a nice 1.5 hr walking tour hitting most of the south end Freedom Trail points of interest. For the money, it’s hard to beat!

The Freedom Trail Walking tour presents full of historic knowledge and our guide, Parker, provides us the best experience for this amazing learning adventure. That is to say, in this tour you can also learn about the myth and the truth of the history we learned from our textbooks. I would recommend anyone who visit Boston and is interested in learning history or simply just want to listen to funny stories

Freedom Trail Preservation

Boston's iconic 2.5 mile-Freedom Trail connects 16 nationally significant historic sites, each one an authentic treasure. Thanks to preservation efforts, these cultural assets are still intact, which makes Boston truly unique as one of the few places in America to experience the actual sites and learn the history they tell while walking through modern city streets.

Their physical location in downtown Cincinnati is just a few steps from the banks of the Ohio River, the great natural barrier that separated the slave states of the South from the free states of the North. Since opening in 2004, they have filled a substantial void in our nation’s cultural heritage. Rooted in the stories of the Underground Railroad, they illuminate the true meaning of inclusive freedom by presenting permanent and special exhibits that inspire, public programming that provoke dialogue and action, and educational resources that equip modern abolitionists.

Their mission is to pursue inclusive freedom by promoting social justice for all, building on the principles of the Underground Railroad.

14. Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center

Honoring a hero.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center is open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm. Closed Monday. No reservations needed.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center  is located amid the landscapes where Tubman lived and toiled. The unspoiled scenes in the area look much as they would have in Tubman’s time. The Tubman Visitor Center features 10,000 square feet of engaging, enlightening multimedia exhibits about her life. It’s a great stop itself and a great launching point for exploring the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, a scenic, self-guided driving tour that includes 36 sites related to Tubman and the Underground Railroad on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, with more sites in Delaware leading to Philadelphia.

The visitor center is open 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Sunday. No reservations needed. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Exhibits feature information about Tubman’s childhood and young adulthood, living and laboring under slavery here in Dorchester County and neighboring Caroline County. The center immerses visitors in the secret networks of the Underground Railroad and Tubman’s own daring rescue missions. Exhibits also feature Tubman’s actions during the Civil War, and her later years as a suffragist, civil rights worker and humanitarian. The exhibits emphasize her values of faith, family, community, and freedom. Tubman’s story is still relevant today, transcending race, gender, age, religion, and nationality — and shows us that regardless of circumstances, you can make choices that positively impact others.

The 10,000-square-foot visitor center includes exhibits as well as a theater that tell the stories of Harriet Tubman’s life and work. It also includes a classroom, gift shop, and library. If you’re bringing children, be sure to stop by the front desk and ask about the Junior Ranger program. The state park’s 17 acres include a meditation garden, nature trails and a 2,600-square-foot outdoor pavilion (for gatherings of no more than 75 people) available by rental (email [email protected] for details). The center includes state-of-the-art green elements such as bioretention ponds, rain barrels and vegetative roofs.

To request a tour for a group, complete the tour request form .

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center is operated by the Maryland Park Service in partnership with the National Park Service to honor Harriet Tubman. It opened to the public in March 2017. For more information, go to the Tubman Visitor Center website .
