The Friend Safari (Japanese: フレンドサファリ Friend Safari ) is a facility in Kiloude City where Trainers can catch Pokémon that cannot normally be found in Kalos .

In the games

Once the player has entered the Hall of Fame , they are able to access Kiloude City and thus the Friend Safari. At the Friend Safari, the player is able to access Safaris for any Friends that are successfully registered in the 3DS 's friend list (regardless of whether or not that person has played Pokémon X and Y ). Each Safari has designated Pokémon that can be encountered, all belonging to a designated type; these are determined by the Friend's friend code and will not change. As such, any players who successfully register a given friend code in their 3DS will all be able to access the exact same Friend Safari. There is no way for the player to access the Friend Safari for their own 3DS.

Friends who have been recognized in the PSS will usually be represented in the Friend Safari list by the avatar they were last seen with on the PSS, while Friends who have not been seen will be represented by a "?" icon. However, if the player has added more than 100 Friends (by deleting some at some point), the earliest-seen avatars may begin to be forgotten and revert to "?" icons until they are next seen on the PSS; this does not affect the rest of the Safari's status, however. Also, if a Friend is deleted from the 3DS's friend list and then readded later, their Safari may retain the status it had before it was deleted.

All Friend Safaris have three Pokémon that may be captured. Only Pokémon from the first two "slots" are available until the Friend to whom that Safari belongs enters the Hall of Fame and subsequently appears online in the PSS at the same time as the player (thereby also allowing the PSS to recognize the Friend if it had not already). Once all three "slots" are unlocked the Pokémon encountered in that Friend's Safari will thereafter have a chance of having their Hidden Ability .

Pokémon encountered in the Friend Safari are guaranteed to have at least two IVs of 31 and have a higher chance of being Shiny . When checking for Shininess, the game generates up to four extra personality values to attempt to find a Shiny value, resulting in a rate of 5/4096; this effect can stack with the Shiny Charm , which results in a rate of 7/4096. [1]

All Pokémon that appear in the Friend Safari are level 30 (causing some, such as Muk and Drapion , to be underleveled ). Pokémon can be found in the Friend Safari regardless of being Version-exclusive Pokémon or otherwise unobtainable in either version. All Friend Safari-exclusive Pokémon can be normally caught in either Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire , or both.

In the tables below, note that "rate" does not refer to encounter rate but rather the likelihood for a Pokémon to have been selected for that "slot" of a Friend Safari. All Pokémon that can appear in a given Friend's Safari have the same encounter rate.

Normal-type Safari

Fire-type safari, fighting-type safari, water-type safari, flying-type safari, grass-type safari, poison-type safari, electric-type safari, ground-type safari, psychic-type safari, rock-type safari, ice-type safari, bug-type safari, dragon-type safari, ghost-type safari, dark-type safari, steel-type safari, fairy-type safari.

• Initially, Vivillon 's icon would not replace the Poké Ball icon after it was encountered. This was fixed in the version 1.3 patch.
• Floette is the only Pokémon to have a greater than 50% chance of appearing in a Friend Safari.
• Cascoon is the only Pokémon to be found in a Friend Safari who does not match the designated type, as it is a pure Bug-type Pokémon found in a Poison-type Friend Safari. Its evolution , Dustox , however, is part Poison-type.

Choosing Type Option.

The Friend Safari  is an area in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y where you can encounter Pokémon not native to the region, Pokémon exclusive to the other version, evolved (not fully) versions of the Kalos starters and Pokémon that are otherwise rare. To get it the player must have at least one friend registered in the Friend List of the 3DS. The Friend Safari Building is located in the top right corner of Kiloude City, which is accessible only post Elite Four and after the player speaks to Professor Sycamore at Lumiose City's Train Station.

New Features [ ]

Unlike the previous games' Safari Zones , the amount of available Friend Safaris rely on the amount of friend codes the player has registered to their 3DS.

There is no time limit or limit to the amount of steps you can take in the zone.

Each friend the player adds has different Pokémon themed to their safari (i.e. a person with Fire-type Safari will have only Fire Pokémon) and they enter their own safari. In order to discover what your own Friend Safari type is and what Pokémon lie within, you must utilize another player aid and have them enter your safari after sharing friend codes.

Every friend code registered in the 3DS will have a safari regardless of whether that friend owns X or Y or not. Those who don't play will only have two Pokémon in their corresponding Safari and Hidden Abilities will not be available. A friend safari will only appear in-game when both players have added the other's friend codes.

In order to unlock the 3rd Pokémon and a chance for each available Pokémon in that Friend Safari to have its Hidden Ability, two players who have shared Friend Codes must have beaten the Elite 4 and be online at the same time at least once in X or Y. After you have seen your friend's avatar in-game while going online via PSS, all 3 slots will be unlocked and Hidden Ability Pokémon can appear in that friend's safari whenever you enter.

The Pokémon that players will find in each safari varies accordingly, but the type of the Pokémon found will always stick to the typing of the Safari. Note: 2nd evolutions of starter Pokémon can be found.

Friend Safari thread! I don't know what you'll talk about but I have a question. Are shiny Pokémon more common in the friend safari? I found my first Shiny Pokémon ever after about 50 encounters in the friend safari and I've been playing since R/S.  

I literally just went back there to see if this was true and the 3rd Pokemon I came across, a Ninetales, wound up being Shiny. Apparently a lot of people are finding shinies in Friend Safari.

I've been in the friend safari a bit and haven't found any. In fact, I've played Y for nearly a total of 90 hours and haven't found a single shiny, despite them apparently being more common in general.

i've been in a grass type safari and after 3 encounter with Ivysaur, the 4th was a shiny if that can help you to find the answer to your question  

I've spent hours in Friend Safari and I've yet to find a shiny in all my 15 years of Pokemon.

Found a Shiny Pachirisu today randomly in Friend Safari. I spent hours trying for a Shiny Charmeleon with no luck and I only seem to get these Shinies when I'm not looking for them haha. So 2nd FS Pokemon so far. Edit: 3RD SHINY! A Charmeleon. Was hoping to get one : D Modest Nature and Solar Power too. Will make a good Mega Charizard Y. Also hatched a Shiny Charmander today using Matsuda Method to give to my best friend : D The Charmeleon was gonna be backup in case none of my eggs hatched shiny but I guess I'll keep the Charmeleon for myself!

Up to now, I've got three shinies on my X version. The first on, an Ursaring, I got by randomly walking around the flowers on Route 21. The second one, a Cloyster, I got in one of my friend safaries. The third one, a Clawitzer, I got via chain fishing in Cyllage City. Three shinies, three different methods. Therefore I'm not quite sure if the probability of meeting a shiny in a friend safari is higher than normal.

Okay, I'm pissed, I still have yet to see a single shiny. I've played over 120 hours. Also, I still think Shininess should be able to be bred down. Makes no sense that it isn't, to me. Somewhat irritatingly, you apparently can't use pokeradar in the Friend Safari.  

I got my first shiny this gen in Friend Safari, a Spritzee.  

I found my second Friend Safari Shiny today, a Pansear (first was a Gabite). I'm pretty convinced the odds are higher. I'm not sure how long we'll go without knowing the exact odds but it's probably the easiest way to find a Shiny short of chain fishing.  

i found 5 shinies i the friend safari. i found a chansey, pancham, magmar, lanturn, and today i found a shiny eevee. im so happy

Also convinced that odds are higher in the Friend Safari, although I wish we had an exact figure for how much higher the odds are. Got a Shiny Swalot while looking for some random Whirlipede to trade to my friend and she ended up encountering a Shiny Mawile minutes later. (Which ended up being Adamant with perfect IVs in Attack and Speed so I'm jealous.)  

Dang, just got another shiny, a Munna this time. There has to be a much higher rate in the Friend Safari, my luck has never been this good.

How Doe Friend Safari Work?

I want an Excadrill with Mold Breaker but I don’t know how to get one. I read that you can get one in Friend Safari, but I have no idea how it works. Can anyone enlighten me?

Once you reach Metchi town you can get a secret base. At the back if your secret base, there is a friend safari, which is a patch of grass where three random pokemon that all share a type can be found. You can only find two of them until the sixth badge is unlocked. You can upload your secret base so other people can go to your friend safari, or you can go to someone else’s friend safari. The safari “LockNDoTs” has drilbur but you can only access it when you get six badges. Everything in friend safari has a 1/5 chance of having Hidden Ability.

I wanted to try and figure out how X & Y determine Friend Safaris based off of friend codes. I've tried looking for this in a variety of places online (and even in a couple of different languages). A couple of people have suggested that they figured it out, but there's no proof anywhere that I could find. Most threads around this died a few years ago, but I figure some people might still be interested so I thought I'd ask about it here.

Here's what I have found out:

• Friend codes seem to be saved within the save file as a truncated 32-bit integer. In other words, the friend code is treated as a 12-digit base-10 integer & then stored in a 32-bit value. This is alongside some other data (like whether or not the 3rd slot is unlocked, or if you've unlocked hidden abilities).
• I did find the area in memory that lists the Pokemon in the Friend Safari in order. It's simply a list of 216 Pokemon (any Pokemon with a 50% chance of appearing for a given slot appears twice in the list). I uploaded the list as a text file, for anyone who's interested. It's split into sections, with each line representing one slot & the Pokemon are in the same order as in the game's memory. With the ROM I was looking at, the list starts at address 0x65EDEA, if you want to look for yourself.

I've tried a few different things using friend codes:

1) Using the friend codes directly (like XORing the high and low words, or XORing all of the bytes & then looking at the result mod 18)

2) Using the friend codes as a seed for the PRNG, and then doing more math on that result (more XORs & mod 18 math)

I haven't had any luck discerning any kind of pattern just using math & logical operators. Also, some people have suggested that the Friend Safari is based on additional factors (like region and/or birth date), although I'm not certain about that ... but if it's true, then it would be even more difficult to work it out this way.

The other approach, of course, is to look at the code's disassembly & try to figure it out from that side. Unfortunately, I'm not very good with disassembly, so my attempts there haven't met with any success.

If it's anything like Mirage Spots (long thread with research and documentation), It could have used friend codes to seed the Mersenne twister or something... Probably too complicated IMO.  

Barely relevant information: We do have a Friend Safari Editor (Well, not exactly an editor, but an unlocker) I think it only unlocks the third slot, if you already have friends on that device.

Yeah - I actually found the relevant bits concerning the third slot & hidden abilities when I was playing around with save files a while back.

Anyway, this was purely a matter of curiosity - I haven't really touched Gen 6 for a while, and I've already collected all of the Friend Safaris that I really care about. It just seemed like an interesting problem.

• 4 years later...

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but there is now an answer to this! I wish I could take credit, but I just did a random search for it recently & found this - https://github.com/zaksabeast/XY-All-Friend-Safaris-Patch . This project essentially fakes out a bunch of FS entries that, if added as a patch, would give someone every possible Pokemon. This project also includes some Javascript that shows how the FS is actually determined. GF certainly went to a lot of trouble to obfuscate this, especially given how relatively insignificant the FS is.

The main thing is that it doesn't actually use the 12-digit friend code, but instead uses a hidden local friend code. I actually found that this local friend code is stored in the Pokemon X & Y save file, and since I have a backup of my save file on my computer I grabbed a few friend codes to test it out. I then went into the Friend Safari in-game & confirmed that the entries matched up with the results of the code.

Anyway, I realize it's a very small thing, but it's something that's been kind of bugging me off & on for years, so I'm glad I got some closure. And if someone else looks this up & stumbles upon this post, perhaps they'll find it interesting as well.

Ads are coming to Discord: from ad-free sanctuary for gamers to ad-infested chaos?

No, it’s not a belated April Fools joke. Ads are indeed coming to Discord. The most popular messaging platform among gamers, is preparing to roll out ads despite being pointendly anti-ads in the past.

On Saturday, March 30, The Wall Street Journal reported that ads from game developers are coming to Discord within a week , meaning the time when Discord users see the ads for the first time is just round the corner. But it should not come as a surprise to those who can read between the lines.

Last month, Discord’s SVP Peter Sellis announced that the platform would be extending its Quest feature, opening it to more developers .

“Sponsored” Quests are ads that appear at supposedly an opportune moment while you’re using Discord. They will prompt you to stream the advertised game for a certain amount of time, and if someone tunes into your stream, you may receive an in-game item or some other bonus in return. Before opening the feature to all developers, Discord said it had trialed it with select partners, such as Fortnite, and “received great feedback” from them.

“Quests will show up tastefully in Discord where you can opt-in to stream your game to friends and win rewards for playing,” Sellis said. Cue in the word “tastefully.”

Speaking to the WSJ, Sellis said that game developers would have an opportunity to run their “paid promotions” — a.k.a. ads — which would appear live on the bottom-left of the screen. It will work as follows: users will be asked to complete an in-game task (quest) from the advertisers and if at least one friend is watching them doing so, they will be rewarded.

How ads will be targeted

Advertisers make more money from ads that are highly relevant to the user. And to make them relevant, they need to collect as much data about the user as possible — the more, the better. Discord will target ads based on a user’s age, location, and gameplay. However, users will be able to opt out of some personalization.

Discord told ArsTechnica that users would still be able to opt out of promotions that are based on their activity or data, but noted it did not mean they won’t see any ads at all.

“Users may still see Quests, however, if they navigate to their Gift Inventory and/or through contextual entry points like a user’s friends’ activity. They’ll also have the option to hide an in-app promotion for a specific Quest or game they’re not interested in,” Swaleha Carlson, senior product communications manager at Discord, told the publication .

For now, the ads that Discord is going ahead with do not sound that intrusive or invasive. There is no talk yet about incorporating ads from marketplaces, like Amazon, or some other companies that push products unrelated to gaming, like make-up kits or home goods. However, this may change in the future.

When asked about whether or not Discord would introduce other ad formats, Carlson did not give a definitive answer, saying that they would “continue to iterate based on what [they] learn.” This leaves Discord a lot of room for maneuver on the ad scene, so we have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, the announcement came as a shock to some Discord users who still remember that its CEO Jason Citron used to be adamantly against relying on ad profits, and insisted on relying on subscriptions for revenue. In an interview to NPR in 2021 , Citron said that that privacy of Discord users is paramount to him, and that he believes that people should know that their “data is not going to be used against them in any way that is improper.”

While the current format is less intrusive than Facebook’s or other platforms’, it’s a slippery slope that could lead to a significant increase in ads down the road. Imagine a world where your cozy gaming chat is interrupted by ads for everything from energy drinks to cryptocurrency scams — it’s not what the users are signed up for, and it would certainly erode their trust in the platform.

If Discord made a U-turn on its stance towards ads, who’s to say they won’t keep pushing the boundaries? The path to monetization is paved with good intentions — until it isn’t.

As for the timing of the ad launch, Discord told Bloomberg in March that it wants to go public at some point in the future , but although its revenues quadrupled since 2020, it is still not profitable . So, apparently a foray into ads is an attempt to change that, so that the company can go to IPO.

How to block ads on Discord with AdGuard

While we’re yet to see these ads, AdGuard will likely be able to block them, keeping your experience on Discord nice and clean. Note that you’ll need to use the AdGuard desktop app for that — it’s available for both Mac and Windows operating systems.

AdGuard apps use filter lists to determine which content to block. AdGuard will check the traffic against its filter lists, and if the content matches any of the predefined filter rules, then AdGuard will prevent it from loading.

Most ad blockers are browser extensions. By their nature, they are only capable of filtering traffic in their respective browsers, and cannot block ads elsewhere. In contrast, AdGuard desktop apps are able to block ads across all browsers and other apps, including Discord, because they are not bound by these restrictions.

Unfortunately, on Android and iOS, due to OS restrictions, it’s nearly impossible to filter traffic inside non-browser apps. So in the case of Discord ads you will have to rely only on DNS-level blocking. It’s hard to make any definitive conclusions until these changes come into effect, but there is a huge risk that DNS filtering won’t block such in-app ads. However, if you use only Discord’s web version, AdGuard on mobile will work nearly as efficiently as on desktop.
