Last month, Samsung surprised Galaxy S23 owners by updating their phones with (then) exclusive Galaxy S24 AI features . Now, the company has confirmed that even more phones will be getting an AI update.

Samsung announced in a press release on Monday that select Galaxy AI-powered features will be coming to phones it released in 2022, including the Galaxy S22 series. The AI update will come via One UI 6.1 and will start rolling out in “early May.”

It looks like almost the entire suite of AI features will be rolling out to Samsung’s older phones, including the heavily advertised Live Translate, Circle to Search, Note Assist and generative image editing.

Other AI-powered tools in One UI 6.1 will also make their way over, including Chat Assist, Interpreter and AI-generated wallpapers. The only feature that hasn’t been included is Instant Slow-Mo, which is likely because of its hardware demands.

The full list of eligible 2022 phones includes the Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, S22 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4 and all models in the Galaxy Tab S8 range. The last announcement brought these same features to most of Samsung's 2023 smartphone lineup .

Samsung might not be finished with rolling out AI tools to older phones, either. A post by a Samsung employee on its community forums (spotted by Android Central ) said that two AI features—Circle to Search and Chat Assist—will come to the Galaxy S21, Flip 3 and Fold 3. The post says that these are supposed to be rolled out in early May too, although no 2021 handsets are mentioned in Samsung’s press release.

Samsung has long said that it wants to bring its core AI features to as many of its Galaxy phones (that it still supports with software updates) as possible. TM Roh, Samsung’s head of mobile, said last month that the company is actively reviewing which older tablets and handsets can run its latest AI technology.

The question then is what older phones will get the AI toolkit? The Galaxy S20 series, which was released in 2020, isn’t receiving Android updates anymore. However, the phone still gets quarterly security patches. Will Samsung’s four-year-old flagship phone also get some AI goodness?

What about its mid-range devices like the recently released A55 and A35? Neither is equipped with Galaxy AI, which might be because they don’t have the right specifications for it. But if three-year-old phones can support select AI skills, surely the latest handsets can too, despite their mid-range status?

Samsung may want to keep its AI technology limited to its upper-tier handsets because the very concept of AI sounds futuristic, which instantly rubs off onto the devices that are equipped with it. If Galaxy AI is available on the company’s cheapest devices, then that may cheapen the image of AI itself too. We will have to see how far the Korean company can spread these features, but it’s clear that the company wants as many people as possible to have their first mobile AI experience with Samsung.

April 17th update. For any Galaxy S23 users struggling with accidental activation of Circle to Search, which is a common criticism of the feature, Google is working on a solution. In its latest episode of the Made By Google podcast, which has delivered insights into the company’s future plans before , the development team behind the search feature admitted there’s more to do to refining work to be done.

“We spent a ton of time thinking about what is the fastest way to access [circle to search]. Because we knew that could make or break the product….we still have further to go and we’re working a lot to make sure that it’s triggered when you want, it’s not triggered when you don’t want.” Erin Lynch, a product manager at Google, explained.

The way to activate Circle to Search, by long pressing the gesture bar at the bottom of your phone’s display, is how Android users used to launch Assistant. Google clearly thinks the new search feature is a better of use of screen real estate and its preferred way for Android users to interact with the web. An example of that is a small titbit Alistair Pott, director of product management at Google, revealed on the podcast. He explained that the data shows people are using Circle to Search to highlight and search text, not just using it for images and often for translating text in foreign languages.

Samsung’s Galaxy A35 midrange smartphone is officially available in the US

The Samsung Galaxy A35 smartphone is officially available for US customers. We knew it was coming to the US , but we didn't know when. The phone starts at $400 and is available in two colors. It’s already been available in the UK since March.

The Galaxy A35 is squarely a midrange device, so don’t go expecting flagship features. However, this is still a capable smartphone with plenty of bang for your buck. Samsung’s A-series devices tend to be among our favorite low-cost smartphones . This model boasts a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display with a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz, just like its cousin the Galaxy A55. The Galaxy A35 also features the company’s Vision Booster software, which automatically adjusts the screen’s tone to suit different ambient lighting conditions.

It also includes Samsung’s proprietary Knox Vault technology, which originally debuted with the Galaxy S21 . This is a separate memory device within the phone for storing sensitive data like blockchain keys, biometric information and authentication credentials. The A35 and the A55 are the first midrange devices in Samsung’s lineup to get this tech.

Android Police has reported that the A35 features a modest Exynos 1380 processor, with an option for 6GB or 8GB of RAM. As for storage, there’s a 128GB model and a 256GB model, with no microSD card slot for additional room.

It includes three rear cameras. There’s a 50MP main camera and a 5MP macro lens, with a relatively pedestrian 8MP ultra-wide lens. The front includes a 13MP camera for selfies and the like. There’s also optical image stabilization (OIS) and video digital image stabilization (VDIS) to offset camera shake.

Again, these phones start at $400 and are hitting store shelves right now. They come in two colors with, with names like “Awesome Navy" and "Awesome Lilac." Not sure something can induce awe just by saying so, but whatever.

One UI 6.1 Brings Galaxy AI From S24 Series to Even More Galaxy Devices

Samsung Electronics today announced the availability of One UI 6.1, bringing Galaxy AI to even more Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Galaxy AI, the premium mobile AI experiences introduced on the recent Galaxy S24 series, will expand to the Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 foldable phones, and the Galaxy Tab S8 series tablets.

The One UI 6.1 update puts the following popular Galaxy AI features into the hands of more users around the world: Circle to Search with Google, Chat Assist, Interpreter, Live Translate, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Generative Edit, Edit Suggestion and AI-Generated Wallpaper.

Barrier-Free Communication and Productivity Taken to a New Level

Galaxy AI makes communication a bridge by offering features that deliver messages across straightforward in any language. Traveling abroad no longer needs to be a daunting prospect with Interpreter converting speech into translated text on a split screen. Live Translate offers instant voice and text translations over phone calls, while Chat Assist helps users’ message in different languages and adjust message tone.

More users can also benefit from its game-changing productivity and information access. Circle to Search with Google streamlines social media and internet interaction with a simple and intuitive gesture while Note Assist simplifies organization tasks with auto-formatting and summarization features. Availability

Why Samsung's $399 Galaxy A35 is the mid-ranger to beat in 2024

While we're still potentially months away from Samsung's next big thing in mobile, the new Galaxy A35 5G may offer just enough to keep consumers satisfied for a little longer. It's available starting today for $399 and comes with a vibrant 6.6-inch AMOLED display, a 5,000mAh battery, a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel main lens, an Exynos 1380 chipset, and more.

Those specifications might sound familiar because they're nearly identical to last year's Galaxy A54 5G , my go-to recommendation for mid-range phone buyers for a good part of 2023. With newer software features and a fancier camera system, I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung's Galaxy A35 5G dethrones the A54 on several of ZDNET's best lists in 2024, at least until someone else releases a better, affordably-priced handset. (Maybe the Google Pixel 8a ?)

Ahead of the launch, I spent an afternoon with the Galaxy A35, browsing the web, seeing how quickly it loaded up articles, watching videos, and stress-testing the device to see exactly what Samsung's latest mid-ranger was capable of. My takeaway? You've probably read the headline already, but it's one of the phones I'll be pushing most consumers to buy, especially if they don't need the best of the best -- and don't want to expense $1,000+ on one.

For $399, the Galaxy A35's specs are generous: 120Hz adaptive display (read: it switches between 60Hz and 120Hz to save power), IP67 water and dust resistance (not IP68, but still great to have), a 50MP main lens with optical image stabilization, up to fours years of operating system updates and five years of security updates; the list goes on. 

This feature set is all packaged in a sizeable form factor that now features a glass back cover -- last year's A34 had a plastic one -- and an iridescent Awesome Lilac colorway. The A35 comes in Awesome Navy too, but even my edited hands-on photos can't save the uninspiring look of the color.

What you won't find in the Galaxy A35 is Samsung's latest Galaxy AI features , the same on-device and cloud-based machine learning tools that have become all the rage with 2024 flagships. You can chalk that gap up to the lack of RAM (6GB), weaker processing power, or just Samsung's favoritism towards its S and Z series models; there's a slim chance the company will trickle its AI features to the A35 any time soon.

But for $399, you'll have to live with the shortcomings, which also include thicker bezels, the absence of wireless charging, and an in-display fingerprint sensor placed lower on the screen than typical Samsung phones. Fortunately, the Galaxy A35 has more pros than cons, as I've concluded from my brief but intimate hands-on time with the phone, and it may just be the mid-ranger to beat heading into the second half of the year.

The phone you buy for your parents: The Galaxy A35 5G is now in the US

• Samsung has announced the launch of the Galaxy A35 5G.

• It’s one of the first Galaxy A series phones to be given Samsung Knox Vault.

Samsung typically launches a variety of mid-range phones every year, with entries in the Galaxy A5x and Galaxy A3x usually arriving in the US. Unfortunately, Samsung revealed the recently released Galaxy A55 5G will not be coming to the US. However, its more affordable sibling, the Galaxy A35 5G, will be available in the States and is launching today.

First things first, let’s start with the exterior of the Galaxy A35 5G, which comes in Awesome Navy, Awesome Lilac, Awesome Lemon, and Awesome Ice Blue colorways. The handset features a flat display with a top center-aligned punch hole camera. At the back, you’ll see the triple camera array that looks similar to the design used for the more premium Galaxy S series.

That display uses AMOLED technology and measures 6.6 inches. You can expect full HD+ resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. If you think this sounds familiar, it’s about the same as what we got with last year’s model. To further improve the screen’s visuals, Samsung has given the handset a Vision Booster mode, which is said to provide clear visibility regardless of the environment.

While the display is important, so too are the cameras. The rear setup features a main camera, ultrawide, and macro lens that offers 50MP, 8MP, and 5MP, respectively. Meanwhile, the front camera boasts a 13MP shooter. Overall, the main camera gets a nice bump up from its predecessor, but everything else is fairly the same. Along with these cameras, however, we’re getting some nice camera features such as optical image stabilization, Night Portrait mode, 12-bit HDR, and video digital image stabilization.

On the inside, Samsung’s latest mid-range phone runs on an unspecified Octa-Core processor with your choice of the following configurations: 6GB + 128GB, 8GB + 128GB, or 8GB + 256GB. Last year, the Galaxy A34 5G was home to a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC, while the Galaxy A35 5G launched globally is powered by the octa-core Exynos 1380 SoC, though this hasn’t been specifically confirmed for the US unit.

The Samsung Galaxy A35 5G is powered by a long-lasting 5,000mAh battery and comes with “Super Fast Charging,” which supports up to 25W. This handset also offers decent protection with an IP67 rating.

Something interesting about this new phone is that it is one of the first in the A series to receive Samsung Knox Vault. You can also expect to be protected by Samsung Knox, a multi-layered security platform designed to protect hardware and software from vulnerabilities. The phone launches with One UI 6.1 based on Android 14. Samsung’s update promise covers this phone with four generations of Android OS updates and five years of security updates.

As with the Galaxy S models, the Galaxy A35 works very well with Samsung’s ecosystem. So you can connect with other Galaxy products in your collection.
