The best GaN chargers you can buy: Expert tested

adrian-kingsley-hughes

Gone are the days of bulky wall chargers that ran hot and offered only a single USB port. Today's landscape features compact, efficient chargers with multiple ports that stay cool, even with heavy use.

Navigating the vast sea of chargers, from top-tier brands to those best steered clear of, can be daunting. However, my extensive testing over the last year of more than 130 GaN chargers -- spanning various sizes, power outputs, and manufacturers -- has culminated in a curated list of the very best chargers on the market.

What is the best GaN charger right now?

Based on my testing, my pick for the best GaN charger overall is the Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN 5-Ports Desktop Charging Station , which is powerful enough to replace a whole bank of standalone chargers. Whether you're on the lookout for a sleek, portable charger or a powerhouse for your desktop capable of charging multiple devices simultaneously, this list is designed to help you discover the perfect charger for your needs.

The best GaN chargers of 2024

Ugreen nexode 300w gan 5-ports desktop charging station, best gan charger overall.

  • USB-C and USB-A ports
  • Keeps cool no matter what the load
  • Perfect if you have legacy USB-A devices
  • Very expensive
  • Too heavy to carry about

This Ugreen GaN charger is a absolute beast. A unit. Built like a brick, equipped with five ports, and can replace a whole bank of standalone chargers. And it's powerful too, capable of a total output a total of 300W, which is more than twice what Apple's standard single-port 140W MacBook Pro charger can deliver.

While a lot of chargers falter when placed under sustained heavy load, that's not the case with the Nexode 300W. This thing can output the full 300W indefinitely. It's a very stable, high-quality charger.

Another thing I like about this charger is that the topmost USB-C port can always output 140W, no matter how many other ports are in use.

Satechi 145W 4-Port USB-C charger

Best gan charger for traveling.

  • Interchangeable plugs for worldwide support
  • Powerful enough to charge a laptop
  • Smaller than Apple's 140W USB-C charger
  • No USB-A legacy support for those who need it

Being a frequent traveler, I've often felt that the gear I used on the road was a compromise, lacking the versatility, power, or quality of the equipment I left at home or in the office. The need to balance weight and global compatibility invariably imposed constraints and limitations.

And despite being smaller than Apple's 140W USB-C charger, two of its ports utilize Power Delivery 3.1 technology, each capable of providing up to 140W of power individually while the other two ports support Power Delivery 3.0, and can each supply up to 45W when used singly.

Not any more with the Satechi 145W, 4-Port charger. Not only does this have four USB-C ports to keep all my devices topped up, but it also comes kitted with four interchangeable international adapters (EU/AU/UK/US), complemented by a mesh carrying bag for the ultimate convenience while traveling. And unlike some chargers I've tested, the adapters are easy to interchange on this unit.

The reviews of this charger emphasis the build quality and how well designed it is, but don't make the mistake that some seem to do and buy this charger if you need legacy USB-A charging support, because this is one is designed for modern workloads.

Satechi 145W tech specs: Ports : 4 x USB-C |  Max single port output : 140W |  Total power output : 145W |  Dimensions : 96 x 76 x 28mm/3.1 x 3.78 x 1.22 inches |  Weight : 357 g/12.6 oz

Satechi 200W GaN 6-port charger

Best gan desktop charger.

  • Perfect for those who don't have any legacy USB-A devices
  • Six USB-C ports
  • Max single port output of 140W
  • Heavy presence on desk so it doesn't get dragged about
  • Too heavy to be a travel charger
  • No USA-A port

Satechi's new 200W USB-C GaN Charger is a charger that's up to the job, no matter what the device. Laptops, smartphones, tablets, earbuds, and power banks, this will charge them all.

Read the review: Satechi 200W GaN 6-port charger

On the front are six USB-C ports supporting a total power output of 200 watts combined. With a single device connected to the first or second port, the unit can output a maximum of 140W, enough to charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro at full speed.

Alongside the six ports is a discreet LED indicator, while on the bottom are rubber feet to keep it from sliding around on the desk, and there's also a cradle to hold the charger in a vertical configuration.

Constructed of space gray aluminum and black polycarbonate, this gives it an elegant yet highly durable finish.

Satechi 200W GaN 6-port charger tech specs :  Ports : 6 x USB-C |  Max single port output : 140W |  Total power output : 200W |  Dimensions : 105 x 105 x 35mm/4.1 x 4.1 x 1.4 inches |  Weight : 622 g/22 oz

Zendure Universal 65W Travel Adapter

Best lightweight gan charger.

  • Multifunction
  • Power outlet prongs pack away tidy
  • Doesn't convert mains voltage

With this Zendure charger, you can charge up to six devices simultaneously (one of those devices being mains powered). And it's perfect for traveling because it combines a a travel adapter for converting socket pins between different countries, along with a multi-port charger, into a single unit.

And while 65W might not seem like much, this will actually run and top up a MacBook Pro, and if you have a smaller laptop then this could very well charge it at full power.

The Zendure Universal Travel Adapter integrates the US, UK, EU & AU plugs into a sleek all-in-one unit, so it can plug into and accept pretty much any plug or socket you encounter (note that it does not alter the voltage of the outlet -- the voltage in that country is the voltage you will get out of the unit).

Zendure Universal Travel Adapter tech specs :  Ports : 4 x USB-C and 1 x USB-A |  Max single port output : 65W |  Dimensions : 168 x 107 x 35mm/‎6.6 x 4.2 x 58 inches |  Weight : 283 g/10 oz

Anker 312 25W USC-C charger

Best gan charger for a smartphone or tablet.

  • Perfect for smartphones and tablets
  • Foldaway prongs make this even more compact!
  • High quality
  • No cable (but remember, this is $10)

This is the perfect charger to buy if you're looking for an additional charger for your smartphone or tablet. Compact and small, high quality, and at a price that you can't beat.

Read the review: Anker 312

I have several of these in use and always keep a few of these in stock because they're great to give people who only have some scabby charger that takes ages to charge their device and gets red hot in the process.

Ugreen Nexode 100W GaN Charger with MagSafe

Best magsafe gan charger.

  • Premium quality
  • MagSafe charging pad means no need for a cable to charge your iPhone
  • Two USB-C and one USB-A means you can charge a total of four devices simultaneously

The Nexode 100W charging station features three USB ports -- two USB-C and one USB-A -- that share between them 100W of output power. This means owners can charge a wide range of devices, from the latest MacBook Pro to an Apple Watch, AirPods, an iPad, or anything that has a USB port.

And this device is no slouch, as it's capable of charging the new Apple M2 MacBook Pro from zero to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Read the review: Ugreen Nexode 100W GaN Charger with MagSafe

The magnetic charging plate -- which is good with any iPhone from the iPhone 12 to the very latest iPhone 15, or an Android device that has wireless charging and a magnetic case -- can be angled up to 65 degrees, so users can choose the perfect viewing angle for the smartphone. Which is the best GaN charger?

Which is the best GaN charger really depends on what you want from a charger -- for some, lots of ports and high power output is what they want, for others it might be having a travel charger that's easy to carry around. For others, it might be having a mix of legacy USB-A and modern USB-C ports.

This chart will help you pick the right GaN charger for you.

What is the best GaN charger for you?

Best is subjective ... do you want power, or something small that you can throw into a backpack when you travel? Do you need one port or many? Are you charging a smartphone or an array of device?

To help you narrow down the charger for you, I've put together a table highlighting the strengths of each charger.

Factors to consider when choosing a GaN charger

A variety of factors impact the quality and usability of GaN charger. Here are some things to take into consideration before buying one:

  • Type of ports : Are you happy with USB-C only, or do you still need USB-A for legacy devices?
  • Power output : If you're charging smartphones and tablets, then a charger that can support 25W or 65W is ample, but if you are charging big devices such as laptops then you're going to need a charger that will support 100W or even 140W of power.
  • How many ports : The more ports a charger has, the bigger and heavier it is.
  • Interchangeable plugs : If you are traveling abroad, having a charger that comes with interchangeable plugs is really handy.
  • Your actual needs versus your fantasy requirements : Some people -- I'm one -- are drawn to this "bigger is better" way of thinking when sometimes what you need is portability. There's nothing wrong with having a massive charger brimming with ports, but remember, if you want to take this with you on the road or traveling, those extra ounces will start to feel like pounds.

How we test GaN chargers

Every year I test dozens of GaN chargers, both in the test lab and in real-world conditions, and there are certain things I look for in a charger if it is to make it onto my recommend list.

  • First, does it do what is says it will do? This isn't as easy as plugging it in to see if it will work, but I also test the charger under heavy and sustained loads (because even a poor quality charger might be able to work for a few minutes). I also test single port load and multi-port loads to make sure these are in line with the specs. To get a passing grade, a charger needs to output the rated power for several hours.
  • Is the charger safe? I carry out a number of electrical safety tests, and also thermal measurements, because no one wants an overheating charger in the home.
  • Is it robust? Can it handle being plugged and unplugged repeatedly? Are the ports good quality? Can the charger handle being dropped and kicked about, because this is the sort of abuse it's going to get in day to day use, especially if it's a travel charger.

What is gallium nitride (GaN)?

Gallium nitride (the chemical formula for this is GaN) is a crystal-like semiconductor material with special properties.

GaN has been used in electronics for decades, starting with LEDs in the 1990s, where it was used to emit light to TVs and computer displays before finding its way into transistors, and nowadays it is replacing the industry's previous favorite semiconductor material -- silicon.

And it is these transistors that are the key to making GaN chargers special.

So what's the big deal with GaN transistors and how do they make for better chargers?

A transistor is a tiny electronic switch that opens and closes really fast, and GaN has several advantages over silicon when used in transistors. Not only are GaN transistors smaller than silicon transistors, but they can carry more power, switch faster (around 40 million times a second, roughly four times faster than silicon transistors), and they are much more power efficient.

While silicon transistors have a power efficiency of around 87%, GaN transistors boost this efficiency to over 95%.

The reduction in transistor size means that newer GaN USB chargers can be physically smaller than the older silicon technology chargers. And while it's nice to have smaller chargers, it is the increased efficiency that is the most important factor when it comes to USB chargers because the more efficient an electronic component is, the less waste heat it generates.

Consumers are, understandably, concerned when chargers feel hot to the touch. While it is common for chargers that use silicon transistors to get to the point of almost being too hot to touch, I find it rare for a charger using GaN technology to feel mildly warm.

The faster switching also means that a GaN transistor inside a charger can have better control over the charging and respond to events such as overheating or overvoltage much quicker than older transistors could, making them safer in use.

Can you use an adapter to change a USB-C port into USB-A?

Yes. Something like this or this will do the job.

But bear in mind that these add yet another thing to lose or forget, and something else to break.

Are there alternative best GaN accessories worth considering?

If you are looking for a more specific charger, consider these top picks for the best GaN accessories.

Best USB-C Laptop Chargers: GaN Inside Makes Them Super Light

We benchmarked several USB-C laptop chargers with Gallium Nitride to help you find the right one for you.

USB-C Laptop Chargers

If you own a lightweight laptop, you've probably noticed that the charger it comes with isn't quite as svelte as the device itself. Even the best Ultrabooks often come with AC adapters that are rightfully called “power bricks.” But if you can use your existing laptop charger to bludgeon someone in self defense, it’s worth spending the money on a third-party unit that won't weigh down your bag and eat up space.

Fortunately, if your system gets power via USB-C, you can easily find a third party charger that weighs less, looks better and may even have additional ports for charging other devices at the same time. The latest, greatest and best USB-C laptop chargers use semiconductors made from GaN (Gallium Nitride) rather than silicon, which allows them to handle more current in a smaller space.

The marketplace is flooded with GaN-powered USB-C laptop chargers with wattages that go all the way up to 100 watts (the maximum allowed by the current USB Power Delivery standard). But not all of these adapters are created equal, with significant differences not only in design and ports, but also in the amount of wattage they can deliver, which is often higher and sometimes a little lower than advertised. In order to help you find the best USB-C laptop chargers, we’ve tested the latest GaN-powered models from major brands such as Anker, Aukey, IOGear and RAVPower.

 USB-C Laptop Charger Shopping Tips

Why you can trust Tom's Hardware Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

  • Bring your own USB-C cable: Most USB-C laptop chargers come in wall wart style, with a single chassis and prongs that fold inward for compact storage. However, they usually don’t come with cables, so you’ll need to buy a USB-C to USB-C cable of appropriate length, usually at least six feet, if you don’t already have one.
  • Get ready for heat: If you're running anywhere close to the rated wattage (or above), expect your USB-C laptop charger to feel toasty to the touch. In our tests, after 20 minutes of running at one watt below their rating (ex: 64 watts on a 65-watt charger), temperatures ranged from 119 degrees Fahrenheit (48.3 Celsius) to 154 degrees (67.8 Celsius). That's unpleasant, but not dangerous. You can get a cooler skin temperature by purchasing a higher capacity charger than you need and running it at less than its maximum.
  • Mind the second port: Many chargers also come with a second port that's either USB Type-A or USB-C.  You can use this port to charge a mobile device or even power a Raspberry Pi, but it will take a certain amount of amperage away from the main port.

Best USB-C Laptop Chargers You Can Buy Today

Aukey Omnia 65W (PA-B4)

1. Aukey Omnia 65W (PA-B4)

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The super svelte and lightweight Aukey Omnia PA-B4 tops our list. It not only performs well, but also provides dual USB-C ports which give you just enough juice to use an ultrabook while charging a Nintendo Switch, a mobile phone or even a second laptop (albeit it slowly and only when you’re not using it).

Though it is conservatively rated for 65 watts, in our tests, the 3.65oz Aukey Omnia PA-B4 managed a maximum sustained rate of 72.6 watts (19.2V / 3.78A). After 20 minutes of that maximum the temperature hit a steamy 139 degrees Fahrenheit, but the charger was a much cooler 120 degrees, the second coolest of all chargers we tested, when run at 64 degrees.

Better still, the Omnia PA-B4 offers up to 15 watts of juice from its second USB-C port (only the top port can be used for max wattage), which is more than enough to charge a second device or comfortably power a Raspberry Pi 4. The primary port will emit less power, however, if a second device is plugged in. In our case, we pushed the primary port 50 watts under those conditions, though Aukey only advertises a maximum of 45 watts.

Aukey Omnia 100W (PA-B5)

2. Aukey Omnia 100W (PA-B5)

If you’re using a 16-inch MacBook Pro or another USB-C laptop that requires more than 65 watts of juice, the Aukey Omnia PA-B5 is your best bet. This super-svelte charger can not only hit its rated 100-watt output capacity but, in our tests, it exceeded that number by more than 10%, delivering 113.7 watts (19.6V / 5.8A), which is more than the USB-PD standard even supports.

When outputting either its maximum wattage or just below its rated wattage, the Aukey Omnia PA-B5 can get pretty hot, returning skin temperatures of 165 degrees Fahrenheit (73.9 Celsius) and 154 degrees (67.8 Celsius) respectively. However, if it's not pulling close to the maximum -- as laptops rarely do -- the charger will be quite a bit cooler. When we pulled just 65 watts, the Aukey Omnia PA-B5's temperature hit just 119 degrees Fahrenheit, which is in line with what the coolest 65-watt chargers.

Perhaps just as important as the Aukey PA-B5's output is its size and weight. This wall wart is just 2.24 x 2.24 x 1.26 inches and 5.3 ounces, which compares very favorably to the RAVPower Pioneer 90W (RP-PC128) that tips the scales at 6.7 ounces with dimensions of 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.2 inches.

Aukey Omnia 61W (PA-B2)

3. Aukey Omnia 61W (PA-B2)

As of this writing, Aukey's Omnia PA-B2 is the smallest USB-C laptop charger on the market. This diminutive wall wart measures just 1.77 x 1.77 x 1.18 inches, which makes it even smaller than RAVPower’s tiny Pioneer RP-PC112, which is just 1.9 x 1.9 x 1.2 inches itself. The Omnia PA-B2 is also a full 0.45oz lighter than its competitor.

Likely because of its small size, the Aukey Omnia PA-B2 can get hot. When running at 60 watts, the PA-B2 hit a toasty 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 Celsius). At its maximum draw of 65 watts, the temperature jumped up to 141 degrees (61.1 Celsius).

However, even at these temperatures, the Omnia PA-B2 is cooler and more consistent than the RAVPower Pioneer RP-PC112, which hit 143 degrees at 60 watts and could not maintain its maximum wattage of 69 watts for more than a few minutes before it turned itself off.

RAVPower Pioneer 65W (RP-PC133)

4. RAVPower Pioneer 65W (RP-PC133)

While most modern-day mobile devices charge over USB-C, there are still many gadgets, including budget Android tablets and Raspberry Pis older than the Pi 4, that utilize micro USB. Though you can buy a USB-C to micro USB adapter, many of us have drawers full of USB-A to micro USB or USB-A to USB-C cables. So it can be pretty useful to have a USB-C Laptop Charger like the RAVPower Pioneer RP-PC133, which has a secondary Type-A port.

In our tests (using a load tester), the RAVPower Pioneer RP-PC133, delivered a full 15 watts (3.27V, 4.72A) from its Type-A port while also providing up to 54.9 watts (19.6V, 2.8A) from its USB-C port at the same time. More importantly, when we hooked the RP-PC133 up to both a laptop and a phone at the same time, it gave the laptop a full 51 watts of juice, which is better than Aukey's slightly-smaller Omnia Mix PA-B3, which gave the same laptop only 38 watts with the phone attached.

RAVPower appears to have a different design philosophy than Aukey when it comes to exceeding its rated wattage. Where the Aukey chargers we tested could sustain wattages above their advertised maximums, RAVPower units could hit higher peaks, but then would shut themselves down after a few minutes. For example, the Pioneer RP-PC133 outputted an epic 73.7 watts (19.5V, 3.78A) on the USB-C port alone, but it didn’t last long.

At 64 watts, one below its rated maximum, the RAVPower Pioneer RP-PC133 maintained a skin temperature of just 119 degrees Fahrenheit (48.3 Celsius), which is pleasantly cool compared to most chargers we tested.

IOGear GearPower 60W (GPAWC60W)

5. IOGear GearPower 60W (GPAWC60W)

IOGear’s GearPower 60W (GPAWC60W) has an oblong box shape that’s a little different from the rectangular shapes from competitors Aukey, Anker and RAVPower. At 3.5 oz it's not quite as light as the Aukey PA-B2 nor is it as small, but it hit a higher maximum wattage, achieving a full 69 watts (19.6V, 3.55A), even though it’s rated for only 60.

The IOGear GearPower 60W is a bit expensive compared to its competitors. At press time, it was $5 more than the Aukey PA-B2 and not available at Amazon in the U.S.

Other USB-C Laptop Chargers We Tested

  • Aukey Omnia Mix 65W (PA-B3) : Aukey's USB Type-C / Type-A charger is also really good and about on par with the RAVPower Pioneer RP-PC133 while weighing less. However, we found that in real-world charging, the RP-PC133 gave more power to a laptop (51 watts vs 38) when a phone was attached to the Type-A port.
  • Anker PowerPort Atom III (60W) : At 4.6oz, this is the heaviest 60-watt charger and it’s also the largest. It also gets warmer (127 degrees Fahrenheit) than competitors in the same capacity when running at one degree below rated wattage. Having come out in mid-2019, this is one of the older GaN chargers out there, and it shows.
  • RAVPower Pioneer 61W (RP-PC112 ): This 61-watt charger isn’t as small as the Aukey Omnia PA-B2, but it gets significantly warmer after 20 minutes running at 59 watts. It can hit a full 69.48 watts for a time, but it can’t sustain that wattage and will shut down before 20 minutes have passed.
  • RAVPower Pioneer 90W (RP-PC128) : In theory, this charger would be a decent one, because it has dual USB-C ports. However, it can’t exceed its 90-watt rated maximum for any length of time and, considering that the most powerful MacBook Pros now use 96-watt chargers, it’s hard to recommend this over the Aukey PA-B5, which is rated for 100 watts and can deliver far more.

How We Tested

To see how each USB-C Laptop Charger performed, we attached it to a MakerHawk load tester. l . In order to get the chargers to perform, we had to run them through a USB PD trigger chip, which allowed us to turn their voltage mode up to the 19 - 20V range that's required for laptop charging. Then we turned the dials on the load tester until we reached the maximum amperage each could deliver and then set a timer for 20 minutes to see if the charger could sustain this wattage and how hot it got after that time.

We found that some chargers, specifically all three RAVPower chargers we tested, could not sustain their highest possible wattages and, after less than 20 minutes, would shut down. We conducted a second series of heat tests with each charger at one watt below its maximum rated wattage (ex: 59 watts on a 60-watt charger) and recorded the temperature there as well.

If a charger had dual ports, we plugged one port into a USB-C phone while we used the other with the load tester. We also tried these dual-port setups with a real laptop, a ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 8) and used a USB-C power meter to see how much the charger was delivering.

* -- Charger shut down before 20 minute stability / heat test could complete at that wattage.

  • AeroWB As an electrical engineer this article really makes me cringe. Not because there is a lot wrong with the tests done, and also not the low technical depth. No, the contents are fine but the constant use of the horrible words wattage and amperage are offending and make my brain hurt. Now unfortunately these words have been misused so much that they have become part of the normal vocabulary, that's how languages work. However anyone who knows the proper words would never use those. So I hope you will use the proper words next time, they are power (or rated power) instead of wattage and current instead of amperage. Now you might think, why are those words wrong when they are in the current vocabulary. There are two important reasons: A) Because they sound stupid to anyone with a technical background, and someone using them will instantly make it known to the technical people they are dealing with a non or less technical person. B) Because they are wrong, even though they are in the dictionary. The best explanation is to compare these with some other more known ones. For instance lets take temperature, temperature is expressed in Kelvin, Celsius or Fahrenheit. You don't say it's 23 temperature today, no temperature is what you are talking about and you can measure it compared to a reference, for example: "it's 300 Kelvin" is a valid expression. No lets say we have two objects with a different temperature. You can say object A has a lower or higher temperature than B, or you could even tell the exact temperature expressed in one of the usual units. But you never would say, object A has a higher Kelvinage then B, or Fahrenheitage or Celsiusage, that sounds ridiculous doesn't it? If you aren't convinced try this with distance in meters, or light years or use weight in pounds or kilograms. The only difference with wattage and amperage is that so many people have been misusing these words persistently that they have become accepted. So remember this: power is measured in Watts and electrical current is measured in Amperes. As an electrical engineer this article has offended me, unfortunately I am not a woman, a gay or black so I suppose this is not going to help me get any compensation in the current PC culture but I still hope some will read this and better their lives and start using power and current! (If you really can't tell, this last part is ironic) Reply

  • TJ Hooker @AeroWB Do you have an issue with the term "voltage"? It also appears in this article and would seem be another 'improper' term by your logic, but you didn't mention it. Some other examples I can think of are mileage and tonnage. I'm sure there are more that I can't think of at the moment. I've never seen someone take issue with the terms amperage/wattage (although admittedly I'm not sure how often they come up), nor do I take issue myself. I am also an electrical engineer. Reply

  • AeroWB @TJ HookerGood one, I never thought about voltage though I wouldn't know another English term, maybe potential or something like that. In my native language (Dutch) we do have a proper word for that, and in Dutch people also use the voltage, amperage and wattage (written the same though pronounced differently) and those are all wrong. About the take issue this is somewhat ironic, I don't really care that much, though it does stand out in an article in negative way, so therefore I wanted to mention it. @bit_userI am sorry for the unnecessary addition. I agree it is good if there is place were we aren't distracted with all those social issues and can focus on something else. Unfortunately these things are permanently popping up everywhere where, and also in my mind. So the rebel in me pops up unexpectedly sometimes Reply
AeroWB said: As an electrical engineer this article really makes me cringe. (If you really can't tell, this last part is ironic)
  • fish2000 While I, too, lack an EE degree – is it just me, or is the methodology employed for this articles’ tests a flawed one? The reporting privileges the results from chargers that violate the Power Delivery spec – lauding devices that exceed not only their own rated power output, but also the negotiated PD contract that ostensibly gets forged between the UFP and DFP during device configuration. Isn’t that a bad thing? I mean, if my 2016 MacBook asks for 87W but ends up getting ninety-something, it’s great if the computer can productively cope with that kind of overvoltage – but that is literally not the deal that those machines negotiated. Plus, we don’t even really know the particulars of said negotiation – according to the article, they used load testers set to deliberately overdrive the power supplies. A real-life, laptop-grade PD sink is a subtler construct, designed by dint of obediance to the PD rules to specifically not do this kind of thing. The fact that the RavPower supplies reset themselves under these contrived and extreme conditions is good behavior, no? … For the curious, here is a fantastically well-written and rigorously illustrated article on this subject, describing the minutiae of a PD implementation bug (in Apple’s own hardware, no less!) that I would recommend to all interested parties. But so, either way: I have both Anker and RavPower devices, and if someone were to buy me a beer I would tell them the story of how two of these namechecked GaN chargers – as well as an Innergie 60c – each individually dealt with sustained AC input power instabilities on the allegedly 120V/15A rail furnished to passengers on Amtrak trains… spoiler alert, the non-GaN Innergie was the least problematic on this one. I would totally welcome a certified EE’s opinion on this, personally, for what it’s worth. Erm. Yes! Reply

I just tested these GaN chargers — and they’re a game changer

You need GaN chargers in your life

Ugreen GaN charger

I review and own a wide variety of electronics, which means I’m constantly charging one, two or more devices at any given time. As you could imagine, that’s a lot of wires and power bricks to manage — not to mention a bunch of sockets being used up on my surge protector . Thank goodness for USB wall chargers.

I admittedly didn’t start using USB wall chargers until recently. I’ve purchased several from Anker and they’ve allowed me to charge multiple devices via a single power brick. And while Anker’s products are fantastic, I’ve recently grown fond of Ugreen’s GaN chargers.

Below, I’ll detail why I’m now a huge fan of GaN chargers and why I’ll recommend them to anyone within earshot. And though I’m spotlighting Ugreen’s products in particular, this article is really about GaN chargers in general. Read on to find out why GaN chargers are awesome and how they’ve been a game-changer for me.

What the heck are GaN chargers?

Before continuing, I think it’s essential to briefly explain what GaN chargers are and how they differ from traditional chargers.

Where standard power bricks are silicon-based, GaN chargers use gallium nitride — hence, GaN — which is a semiconductor that runs cooler than standard charger components like silicon. Since they’re very efficient at conducting electricity, you can squeeze more power from a smaller charger. GaN chargers can pack many ports in close proximity to one another, and distribute power to them more efficiently.

Ugreen Nexode 140W USB-C charger: $119 @ Amazon

Ugreen Nexode 140W USB-C charger: $119 @ Amazon The Ugreen Nexode 140W is a powerful GaN charger that can power devices like the 16-inch MacBook Pro along with other gadgets. If you need to power multiple devices fast, this is an excellent GaN charger to get.

They also generate less heat because their energy loss is lower. This also contributes to GaN chargers’ relatively smaller size — they don’t need big heatsinks like those typically found in silicon chargers.

In short, GaN chargers are smaller than standard silicon chargers but are capable of distributing more power to more devices while generating less heat. They’re a nearly perfect product for their intended purpose.

GaN chargers helped me declutter

To ensure I can always keep my devices powered up, I have a USB-C cable, Lighting cable, and micro USB cable at the ready. I could probably ditch the micro USB cable since almost all of my electronics charge via USB-C nowadays, but I feel better having it on standby, on the off-chance I'll actually need it.

I used to have these cables connected to three separate power bricks, each taking up space on my surge protector. It took me an embarrassingly long time to get wise and finally buy USB chargers with multiple ports.

Ugreen Nexode 100W USB-C charger: $79 @ Amazon

Ugreen Nexode 100W USB-C charger: $79 @ Amazon The Ugreen Nexode 100W has three USB ports for charging your electronic devices, including tablets, smartphones and even laptops. This is a great product for anyone who owns multiple electronics.

I started with a couple of small Anker chargers before trying out Ugreen’s. To be specific, the Ugreen Nexode 100W USB-C charger, has become a mainstay of my desk setup. Because of this handy peripheral, I no longer have to contend with multiple cables jutting out of several power bricks connected to a power strip. I can keep them all connected to a single source, as you can see in the picture below.

Ugreen GaN charger

Let’s talk about power distribution for a minute. If you’re charging a single device on the Nexode 100W, the top two USB-C ports deliver a maximum of 100W each, while the third USB-C port and the single USB-A port deliver 22.5 each. If you’re using all four ports, the top USB-C port delivers 45W while the second one pumps out 30W. The third USB-C port and the USB-A port dole out 10.5W max each.

Ugreen GaN charger

Thanks to all of those ports, I’m able to simultaneously charge my iPhone 13 Pro , iPad Air 5 , Apple Airpods Pro and Apple Watch SE . But obviously, I can charge anything, not just products in the Apple ecosystem . Regardless, my work and personal space are now much tidier thanks to this Ugreen GaN charger.

Less stuff to carry around in my bag

I take the Nexode 140W USB-C charger with me when I travel. I use it to keep the MacBook Pro 16-inch and some of the other aforementioned devices charged if I’m somewhere with a wall plug. As you can imagine, this is preferable to carrying the laptop’s big 140W charger, along with the other power bricks for each of my devices.

Ugreen GaN charger

And if anyone I’m with needs to charge their devices, I bring the Nexode 65W USB-C charger , which has two USB-C ports and a lone USB-A port. The 45W charger is good too, but I like bringing the 65W with me since it pumps out more power and has three ports instead of two.

Super fast charging

According to Ugreen, the Nexode 140W USB-C charger can charge the MacBook Pro 16-inch up to 56% in 30 minutes. I haven’t done a proper benchmark to verify that claim, but this GaN charger does indeed power up Apple’s huge laptop pretty fast. The same applies to whatever else I’m charging.

Even if I’m using one of the ports that delivers less power, or if I have multiple devices plugged in, all my electronics charge relatively fast overall.

GaN chargers are game changers

Regardless if they’re from Ugreen, Anker or other reputable manufacturers, you need GaN chargers in your life. Not only are these products extremely useful, but they’re also relatively affordable. The Nexode 140W, for example, currently costs $89 on Amazon, while the 100W charger is currently $79. Considering their utility, those prices are practically a steal.

If you own multiple electronic devices and have limited space to connect them all, you should definitely consider getting a GaN charger or two. It might change your life.

The best GaN chargers is something everyone with a phone, tablet or laptop should know about. Because, quite simply, they'll power up these devices more quickly than a traditional type of charger.

This new generation of chargers use gallium nitride rather than silicon, which is better at conducting electricity. And this makes them smaller, more energy-efficient, cooler, and able to charge more quickly than silicon chargers.

This means you'll save space, save money on electricity bills and won't have to wait around so long for your phone, tablet, camera, or laptop to be at 100%. So really, why would you buy any other type of charger?

Below we've brought together the best GaN chargers on the market today. Choosing between them is mainly about how what sort of devices you want to charge. A 45W charger is fine for a phone, but for a powerful laptop you'll need something more like 100-200W. Also, if you need to power up more than one device at once. some GaN chargers come with lots of ports. Alternatively, if you're looking for a different type of charger, see our guides to the best wireless chargers and the best solar chargers .

This is a tiny little charger that is perfect for charging your iPhone at maximum speed, and then slipping into a pocket when you're done.

Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN charger

A quite frankly ridiculously powerful 300W of charging capacity for multiple devices including power-hungry laptops – squeezed into a small cube that won't look out of place on any desk.

Ugreen Nexode 140W 3-Port GaN charger

One of the most powerful wall chargers for power-hungry laptops and other devices, the only downside is the charger's large size takes up more space in bags and sockets.

Anker Prime 240W GaN Desktop Charger

This might not be the most powerful on this list, but still manages an epic 240W of charging – however, this is the most sleek-looking desk charger for any minimalist setup.

Anker Prime 100W charger held in a hand

1. Anker Prime 100W GaN Charger

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

I am a big fan of the Anker Prime range of chargers and this one at 100W is probably the best of the lot for a size-power ratio. The Anker 100W is a compact and powerful charger that will free you from carrying around large bulky chargers, or even worse, chargers with separate power bricks. The charger also offers enough power out of one port to easily keep the best (non-gaming) laptops running at max juice all day, and with three ports to charge all your devices quickly when needed.

The size Anker has shrunk this charger to I think is amazing, it is so light and I can easily slip it into a pocket if needed. The Anker 100W has a sleek design and a durable build quality, although it does get quite hot when used to maximum capacity. It has two USB-C ports that support Power Delivery (PD) up to 100W, which means it can charge most laptops, tablets, and smartphones at their optimal speed. It also has one USB-A port for older or lower-power devices that still rely on that connection. The charger also has a smart chip that detects the connected devices and adjusts the output accordingly, ensuring safe and efficient charging for all your devices.

Whether you are traveling, working, or using it around the home, I think the Anker 100W is a great choice for anyone who needs a versatile and portable charger that can handle multiple devices at once.

Best GaN charger for travel

Ugreen Nexode 65W charger held in a hand

2. UGREEN 65W USB C Travel Charger

If you’re someone who travels frequently, I would suggest checking out the Ugreen Nexode 65W 3-Port Travel Charger. I’ve found it to be a versatile and user-friendly solution for my power needs while on the go. The charger’s simple and intuitive design, featuring click-in and out international plugs, ensures hassle-free charging and compatibility with various global wall outlets. Additionally, the included soft case not only keeps everything organized but also protects the charger and accessories during travel, minimizing the risk of losing those essential components.

While there are other smaller and more powerful chargers out there, I’ve found that the Nexode 65W charger strikes a good balance between size and function. It offers a 65W power output that caters to a range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to some laptops.

Whether you’re a frequent traveler like me or simply seeking a multi-device charger for home use and the occasional getaway, I think the Ugreen 65W charger is a smart choice for a more streamlined roaming power solution.

Anker 511 Nano 3 Power Adapter (30W) in a hand

3. Anker 511 Nano 3 USB-C GaN Charger (30W)

When it comes to choosing the best GaN chargers, there are a lot of factors to consider. However, the most important ones are price and power. If you’re looking for a charger that offers great value at the lower end of both of these, then the Anker Nano 3 (30W) power adapter is an excellent choice.

This tiny device is capable of charging a MacBook Air at full speed, an iPhone up to three times faster than with an original 5W charger, and the latest Samsung phones at full speed with Samsung Super Fast Charging. It’s a versatile charger that can handle all your charging needs.

However, there are some downsides to this charger. For one, there’s only one port, which means you can only charge one device at a time. Additionally, it’s not suitable for large laptops. So if you have a larger laptop that requires more power, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Best desktop GaN charger

Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN charger

4. Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN charger

This charger from Ugreen leads the pack out of all the chargers I have tested for sheer power and connections, capable of an astonishing combined 300W of charging power over its five USB ports.

The Nexode 300W comfortably powered and charged every device on my desk including two MacBooks, phones, tablets, and of course, cameras. The charger gets a little warm, but not to worrying levels, and the power never once cut out or dipped in my testing.

While you might find a lot of your devices can't currently make use of the full charging speeds that this Ugreen charger is capable of out of each port, you'll be future-proofed for when these devices do come along.

Finally, the Nexode charger looks great, but the downside is the charger is a little heavy and isn't the most convenient to move from place to place with, although is certainly possible, but this might disappoint anyone who needs a lot of power on the go. This is much more at home as a permanent addition to your desk as a power hub.

Best powerful GaN wall charger

Ugreen Nexode 140W charger held in a hand

5. Ugreen Nexode 140W 3-Port GaN charger

I tried out the Ugreen Nexode 140W 3-port charger and it worked wonders. I would go as far as saying it is the only charger you are going to need. It is powerful enough to support even the most power-hungry laptops and devices with 140W single port charging.

Even with all three ports in use, there is enough power to keep less power-intensive laptops running, alongside your phone and other devices. I pushed this charger as hard as I could with two laptops and a phone and it kept all three juiced up while running with no issues like power drop-outs or overheating.

The charger itself is well-designed and looks great. It is lightweight, but it is a little larger than some of the lower-powered devices on the market, so it will take up a little more room in a bag, or require a bit more space around your wall outlet. It also isn’t the cheapest charger on the market, but for the power and future-proofing, I think this is a great investment.

Best looking GaN desktop charger

Anker Prime 240W GaN Desktop Charger on a wooden table

6. Anker Prime 240W GaN Desktop Charger

The Anker Prime 240W desktop charger has proven to be a valuable addition to my workspace, effectively addressing the issue of managing multiple cables from various outlets in my power strip. The charger boasts a sleek and sophisticated design, although the stand struggles to keep the charger upright, and the fixed power cable restricts optimal positioning.

Nonetheless, if you’re seeking a solution for powering multiple devices simultaneously, this charger is an excellent choice. Its 240W capacity, distributed across four outlets, effortlessly accommodated my array of devices. Even under the strain of multiple laptops, the charger performed flawlessly and maintained a cool temperature. The single ports, offering 140W or 100W, were particularly useful for my more power-hungry devices.

While the Anker Prime 240W charger is somewhat pricey compared to less powerful alternatives, it’s worth considering whether your devices can fully utilize its power capacity. Despite the cost, investing in this charger could be a prudent move for future-proofing your tech setup.

Best wall charger for power and ports

Belkin BoostCharge Pro 140W 4-Port GaN Wall Charger held in a hand above a wooden floor

7. Belkin BoostCharge Pro 140W 4-Port GaN Wall Charger

For the past week, the Belkin BoostCharge Pro has been my primary wall charger, and its performance has left me thoroughly impressed. With four ports capable of delivering a whopping 140W of power, it effortlessly charges even my most power-hungry laptops at maximum speed. The ability to charge multiple devices simultaneously without sacrificing charging efficiency is a definite plus.

What I find particularly useful is the inclusion of adapters for various countries. This feature not only makes the charger an ideal travel companion but also eliminates the need for separate adapters, saving me both money and the hassle of remembering to pack them!

However, there is a minor downside. The charger's size is quite substantial, which means it occupies a significant amount of space in my bag and around the socket. This can make it challenging to use in confined spaces. It's probably on the larger end of what I'd be comfortable carrying around.

Best GaN charger with MagSafe wireless

iPhone 15 Pro Mac charging on a Ugreen Nexode 100W GaN with 15W MagSafe on a wooden desk

8. Ugreen Nexode 100W GaN with 15W MagSafe Charging Station

The Ugreen Nexode 100W GaN charger is a delightful addition to my meticulously arranged desktop setup, thanks to its 15W MagSafe feature that brings a touch of elegance when I place my iPhone on the MagSafe charger in landscape mode, it transforms into a beautiful desktop clock, merging functionality with style. In general, the charger’s design is visually appealing and enhances the overall look of my workspace.

The charger’s robust 100-watt output provides ample power to charge my MacBook or phone through its two USB-C ports or lower-powered devices through the single USB-A port, which makes the charger very versatile. However, the 100W single port rating does drop quite a bit when multiple ports (or the MagSafe pad) are in use at the same time.

The only feature I find missing is a second wireless charger beneath the top surface, which would have been ideal for charging my AirPods or Apple Watch, thereby increasing its versatility. Nevertheless, given the rarity of chargers that offer both wireless charging and a powerful desktop charger combination, this is one of the best desktop chargers I’ve used.

How to choose the best GaN charger

Firstly think about how many devices you want to power, and what power ratings your devices have.

If you want to power a lot of smaller devices, then you need to look for a charger with the highest number of ports. If this can be combined with a big maximum wattage from the charger then that will mean you can charge these many devices even faster. Phones, headphones, and wearables all charge at quite low rates compared to laptops, so can usually all be charged simultaneously at full speed.

If you have one of two big devices that are power hungry like a laptop then this means you might be better off with a powerful charger with just a few ports as the more you plug into the charger the more you dilute the total power until you get to the point where it is not able to power your most needy devices.

What's the difference between GaN and GaN2

GaN2 (or GAN II) is the latest generation of GaN charging technology - providing improvements in power transfer, heat dissipation, and charging speed over first-generation GaN devices.

What does GaN stand for?

GaN is short for Gallium Nitride. It's a natural mineral, that is an alternative semiconductor material to silicon. Gallium nitride allows manufacturers to make chargers that are smaller, faster, and more power efficient than the brick-like silicon chargers that we have grown up with.

How we choose the best GaN chargers

We choose which GaN chargers go into this guide based on a few different criteria. Firstly, we choose brands that we know are reliable, there are a lot of brands on marketplaces like Amazon that come and go, but having confidence in an established brand is important for safety and should you need product support.

We then try to select a range of chargers that cover different use cases like charging single or multiple devices, different power output requirements, and lastly covering a range of prices.

The broad range of chargers in the guide reflects this desire to be as helpful to as many people as possible in deciding their next GaN charger.

The 120W ArcDock from Spigen increases the available power to 100W with a single USB-C charger and can deliver up to 60W to each USB-C port when charging two. Have a wireless charger for you desk? Get 18W of power on a USB-A port for it without giving up a single watt on the primary USB-C port for your laptop.

Anker PowerPort Atom III Slim 30W

Sleek and stylish

Like the 65W four-port model, this is another nice-looking GaN charger that can charge either a phone, tablet, or laptop. It can also hide in a deck of playing cards if your coworkers tend to "borrow" yours.

Baseus PowerCombo 65W USB-C charger

A complete desktop power solution

The PowerCombo 65W Charging Station from Baseus can handle most or all of the power needs of a modern work-from-home desktop. Available in black or white for a better match, this charging station has up to 65W power delivery on one USB-C port and comes with two outlets for other devices like a monitor or standalone battery charger.

Mophie Speedport 120 GAN charger

Portable power station

Mophie from Zagg has been powering our phones for years, but its Speedport 120W charger can top up every device in your backpack from a single plug. It has 120W of total output with three USB-C ports and a USB-A port. The top two USB-C ports can handle a full 100W of power, with the lower USB-C delivering 20W and the USB-A ports offering up to 12W.

Ugreen Nexode 4 GAN charger

Fast USB-A charging

This 100W Nexode Desktop charger can deliver up to 23.5W from the USB-A ports which is around double that of most other multi-port chargers. This can be nice for older tech using micro-USB that support fast charging. Besides that, you get three other USB-C ports with up to 100W of power delivering in single-port mode and 65W in two and three-port modes.

What GaN actually is and what it does in your charger

GaN stands for Gallium Nitride, an alternative to the traditional silicon that has dominated electronics for the last few decades. Gallium nitride has some advantages — a wider band gap means it's easier for energy to pass through it, and it has higher limits for the temperatures and power levels it can handle — that makes it almost tailor-made for higher-capacity tech like Power Delivery chargers for today's best Android phones .

In short, semiconductors and chargers made with gallium nitride are smaller and more efficient, which in turn can help them avoid heating up as much as traditional silicon-based chargers.

However, since the goal of most gallium nitride chargers is to be as small as possible, some GaN chargers still get uncomfortably warm when used for long periods of time because they don't have as much room for heat dissipation. You're not going to be able to bake a cookie on a GaN charger the way you can on a MacBook brick during an all-night editing session, but they'll still get a little warm depending on how hard you work them.

What makes the Anker 313 Ace the best GaN charger on the market

In an age where you can charge quite literally all of your tech via one protocol — from your laptop to your phone to all the power banks and headphones in between — one good Power Delivery charger with PPS can replace a dozen chargers. So if you can get away with a single-port charger — or you need a charger for your purse or backpack — the Anker 313 Ace is the perfect choice.

45W is the top speed for charging the best Chromebooks and many USB-C laptops, and it will charge almost all tablets at top speed, too! It can even deliver 45W charging on phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra thanks to its support for Super Fast Charge 2.0. Just make sure you also grab one of the best USB-C cables with 5A support to use with it.

If you need to charge two devices at once — think of two students with Chromebooks for homework — the Spigen 120W ArcDock is a great pick. Not only does it have enough power for two power-efficient laptops at once, but it also has the ports to top up all of your essential devices once homework is done.

The Best USB-C Laptop and Tablet Chargers

Our four picks for best USB-C laptop and tablet chargers, placed next to a laptop that is being charged with a USB-C cable.

By Sarah Witman

Sarah Witman is a writer focused on batteries and charging accessories. She has spent countless hours charging, discharging, and recharging batteries.

Buying a new laptop charger was once an arduous and expensive ordeal, but computers with USB-C charging have made it much easier and more affordable.

The best choice for almost any modern tablet or laptop is Nekteck’s 60W USB-C GaN Charger . This adapter is just as powerful and reliable as a replacement from your laptop’s manufacturer, and it’s smaller than almost any other we’ve seen. It’s safety-tested and certified, and it comes with its own USB-C charging cable, making it a particularly great value at its very low price.

Everything we recommend

gan usb c travel charger

Nekteck 60W USB-C GaN Charger

Best replacement usb-c laptop or tablet charger.

This compact charger can power almost any USB-C laptop at top speed, and it works great for lower-powered devices, too. Despite its affordable price, it even includes a cable.

Buying Options

gan usb c travel charger

ZMI zPower Turbo 65W USB-C PD Wall Charger

The next-best option for most laptops and tablets.

This charger is about the same size as our top pick and charges just as quickly, but it’s not independently certified for safety and performance.

gan usb c travel charger

Nekteck 100W PD 3.0 GaN Wall Charger

Best for most high-powered laptops.

This model has all the power of the charger included with a 15- or 16-inch MacBook Pro but is smaller and costs much less. The included cable is removable and replaceable, in case it gets damaged.

gan usb c travel charger

Insignia 140W Dual Port USB-C Compact Wall Charger

Best for a 16-inch macbook pro (2021 or later).

With more power from one port than most models we’ve tested, this compact charger has two USB-C PD ports capable of delivering 140 W apiece or 145 W total. It’s pricey, but it comes with a long, 8-foot cable.

Whether you need to replace your original charger or you just want to have an extra at home or the office, you should get the Nekteck 60W USB-C GaN Charger . It will charge almost any laptop 13 inches or smaller at full speed, and it can fast-charge most lower-powered laptops, tablets, and phones, as well.

The Nekteck is smaller and lighter than just about any other laptop or tablet charger we’ve found, it has a convenient fold-up plug, and it comes with a detachable cable, which is something that usually costs $10 to $20 on its own .

This charger is cheaper than many less powerful models, and like most of Nekteck’s products, it’s certified by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), which means an independent third party has tested it and ensured it meets performance and safety specifications.

Port 1: 60 W USB-C Dimensions: 1.97 by 1.97 by 1.2 inches USB-C cable: 6.5 feet, detachable

Nekteck makes the best all-around charger we’ve tested, but if it’s out of stock (or if the price jumps to over $30), we recommend grabbing ZMI’s zPower Turbo 65W USB-C PD Wall Charger instead.

The ZMI has plenty of power for most laptops and any tablet, and like the Nekteck charger, it comes with a sturdy cable. The main reason it’s not our top pick is that the ZMI charger isn’t USB-IF certified. While that’s not a dealbreaker altogether, we think it’s worth a few more dollars to get the Nekteck charger.

Port 1: 65 W USB-C Dimensions: 1.97 by 1.97 by 1.1 inches USB-C cable: 4.9 feet, detachable

Almost all computers that charge via USB-C have a maximum charge speed of 60 watts, but a handful can charge even faster with more power—most notably, the MacBook Air (2022 or later) reaches its peak charging speed at 67 W, the 15-inch MacBook Pro (2019) at 87 W, and both the 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or later) and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019) at 96 W. For these laptops, we recommend Nekteck’s 100W PD 3.0 GaN Wall Charger .

This 100 W charger, which is notably smaller than Apple’s own charger , comes with a detachable USB-C charge cable and costs less than half the price of what a full replacement set would cost from Apple. Like our 60 W top pick, it’s independently tested and certified for safety.

Port 1: 100 W USB-C Dimensions: 2.7 by 2.7 by 1.2 inches USB-C cable: 6.5 feet, detachable

If you have a laptop that requires more than 100 W (such as a 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 or later), or if you’d like to fast-charge two smaller devices simultaneously, the Insignia 140W Dual Port USB-C Compact Wall Charger is your best bet.

Its two USB-C ports can deliver up to 140 W apiece or 145 W total, and it’s small and light (weighing just 10 ounces), given its high output.

Like our other picks, the Insignia has a handy fold-up plug, it’s USB-IF certified, and it comes with a cable. Not only is the 8-foot-long cable longer than that of the rest of the bunch, but it’s more powerful—capable of passing up to 240 W—and adds premium features like a woven-nylon sheath and an attached hook-and-loop cable tie.

Port 1: 140 W USB-C Port 2: 140 W USB-C Dimensions: 3.3 by 2.8 by 1.3 inches USB-C cable: 8 feet, detachable

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: nekteck 60w usb-c gan charger, runner-up: zmi zpower turbo 65w usb-c pd wall charger, also great: nekteck 100w pd 3.0 gan wall charger, also great: insignia 140w dual port usb-c compact wall charger, other good usb-c laptop chargers, what to look forward to, the competition.

I’ve been a science journalist for more than seven years, covering a wide variety of topics from particle physics to satellite remote sensing. Since joining Wirecutter in 2017, I’ve reported on power banks for phones and tablets , portable laptop chargers with USB-C ports and/or AC outlets , USB-C cables and adapters , and more. I spent nine hours researching and 26 hours testing USB-C laptop and tablet chargers for this guide alone.

The current iteration of this guide builds on extensive research and testing conducted by Nick Guy, who has covered power accessories since 2011 and reviewed them for Wirecutter for over six years.

This guide covers chargers for laptops that get power via a USB-C connection, specifically those that use USB Power Delivery (USB PD), a technology that lets USB-C transmit the high power required to charge a laptop. Most modern laptops—from super-slim ultrabooks to heavy-duty laptops designed for gaming, video editing, or working with lots of data—charge using USB-C.

With USB-C now nearly ubiquitous across phones, tablets, laptops, and more, you no longer have to rely on your device’s manufacturer to be the only source of a safe charger. Every computer comes with a charger, but you might still need or want another, whether to avoid carrying it to and from work or because you need to replace a broken one.

Charger speeds of popular notebook computers and tablets

Some tablets that charge via USB-C come with underpowered chargers, so our picks will allow you to charge them much faster. For example, the 20 W charger that comes with the largest iPad Pro will charge its battery to 18% after 30 minutes and 35% in an hour, while a 30 W or faster charger provides a 33% charge in half an hour and 65% in one hour.

Five different USB-C chargers stacked one on top of the other.

We pored over the USB charging catalogs from a wide range of reputable brands to find the best competitors. From there, we whittled down the list based on the following criteria:

  • USB-C ports with 30 W or higher output: Since many laptops charge at 45 W or higher, that’s the minimum we initially considered for the chargers we tested. Anything lower than that will still charge these devices, but won’t do so at the maximum rate. We also tested 60 W and 87-to-100 W chargers, which are capable of charging more powerful computers faster. For our most recent update, we tested five 30 W chargers to find a smaller alternative that can still charge the MacBook Air and some Chromebooks at their highest speeds.
  • USB-A ports with 12 W or QuickCharge 3.0 output (if applicable): Many USB-C chargers also include a USB-A port for legacy devices. USB-A charging maxes out at 12 W (5 volts, 2.4 amps) for Apple devices and many Android phones, while some of the latter can charge faster with Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 standard. We considered only chargers capable of this maximum output level.
  • Power-to-dollar value: We considered the price of the charger relative to the total power it can deliver across its ports, ruling out models that were more expensive but didn’t offer a higher power output or extra features.
  • USB-IF certification: Although we didn’t require it, certification by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) helps bolster the credentials of a charger, signaling that it’s well made and safe, and that the company behind it has invested in its own reputation. Given two identical chargers, we’d choose the one with the certification.

To find the top options in each category, we put the finalists through a number of tests.

  • USB-C ports: We used Total Phase’s USB Power Delivery Analyzer and its Data Center Software to measure and record the power rates the chargers made available to connected devices, the actual power output observed when connected, how those compared with the advertised figure, and whether there were any errors in how the charger and device talked to each other.
  • USB-A ports: We tested how much power each USB-A port can provide. To do this, we plugged in a variable power load and an ammeter, which allowed us to finely control the power flow. We started with the power load set to 0 amps, then turned it up until it matched the promised amperage, ensuring the voltage stayed within 4.75 volts to 5.25 volts.
  • Combined power output: After assessing each port, we tested the combined output when all of them were in use by devices that take a lot of power.
  • USB-C cable testing: For the chargers that came with a USB-C cable, we used Total Phase’s Advanced Cable Tester to make sure the cable was safe and worked as labeled. Nonstandard cables have been known to cause problems, including sometimes destroying the devices they’re meant to charge . We won’t recommend a charger that comes with a cable that fails our tests.

Our pick for the best replacement USB-C laptop or tablet charger, the Nekteck 60W USB-C GaN Charger.

Nekteck’s 60W USB-C GaN Charger is the best charger you can buy if you need a replacement for almost any modern laptop with a 13-inch (or smaller) screen that charges via USB-C. It’s also a great option for the iPad Pro.

It will charge your device fast, it’s small, and it’s safe, since it’s one of the few chargers (especially at its price) to be certified by the USB-IF. It’s also quite affordable—a fraction of what you’d pay Apple for a replacement—even though it includes a 6.5-foot, 60 W USB-C cable in the box.

It delivers the power it promises. The Nekteck offers enough power for almost any 13-inch laptop, including the more power-hungry 13-inch MacBook Pro.

USB-C charging is standardized into different power levels, and the most common ones used with computers and tablets are 45 W (15 volts, 3 amps) and 60 W (20 volts, 3 amps). This charger supports the former but will automatically switch to 15 W, 27 W, and 36 W rates as needed to fast-charge phones and other devices.

When plugged into a 13-inch MacBook Pro, it properly charged at 60 W with 20.4 volts. It passed the Total Phase tests , as expected.

The Apple 61W Charger next to the Nekteck 60W USB-C GaN Charger to show the difference in size.

It’s a bargain compared to first-party chargers. The 60W USB-C GaN Charger has often been on sale, sometimes for well under $20. Even at its historical high price of $29 (as of this writing), it still costs only a third of what Apple charges for its comparable charger and cable .

It’s such a strong value that we don’t think you should buy a lower-powered charger even if your device requires only 45 W; those slower chargers aren’t any cheaper, and the 60 W option will potentially be more useful in the future.

It comes with a great cable. It may even be worth it to buy the charger if you simply need a new cable—it comes with a great one, and the price isn’t much higher than buying one separately. USB-C charging cables have come down in price alongside USB-C chargers themselves, but good ones still normally cost $10 to $15.

The one caveat here is that the included cable supports only 60 W charging, so don’t expect to get full speed if you use it with more powerful chargers.

It’s USB-IF certified for peace of mind. Nekteck is one of the few companies with USB-IF certification across its entire product line. That means an independent lab has verified that it meets an industry-standard set of criteria for safety and performance.

Since we test all of our recommendations ourselves, we don’t rely exclusively on USB-IF certification to make a pick. But that stamp of approval on the company’s designs and adherence to USB-C standards gives the Nekteck charger another advantage over the competition.

Close up of a Nekteck charger connected with a cable to a laptop port.

It’s tiny and lightweight. The Nekteck charger is nearly the smallest USB laptop charger we’ve tested at this power level, just a hair bigger than the ZMI zPower Turbo 65W USB-C PD Wall Charger . Measuring 1.97 by 1.97 by 1.2 inches, it has a volume that’s about half that of Apple’s 61W USB-C Power Adapter , and it’s small enough to throw in a computer bag or a jacket pocket. Folding prongs make it that much more compact.

It comes with a solid warranty and reliable support. Nekteck’s standard warranty period is 12 months, which is plenty of time to use your charger and ensure it’s working properly. We’ve found the customer support to be helpful, both in terms of response speed and addressing our concerns.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

If you want a charger that comes in an Apple-y white or adds a pop of color to your work setup, you might be disappointed that this model comes only in black.

A ZMI zPower Turbo 65W USB-C PD Wall Charger with usb-c cable connected.

ZMI’s zPower Turbo 65W USB-C PD Wall Charger is the best charger you can buy if our top-pick charger is out of stock, or if it’s significantly cheaper when you’re ready to purchase.

It offers 65 W charging in a relatively compact package about the same size as the Nekteck, and like the Nekteck, it passed our Total Phase tests without any issues. That means it will charge safely and correctly match the power level of whatever you plug it into.

However, it doesn’t have USB-IF certification like the Nekteck charger does. ZMI includes a 5-foot, 100 W USB-C cable in the box, and that cable also passed our tests.

Close up of the ZMI’s single USB-C port.

It provides plenty of power for most laptops and tablets. The ZMI charger properly powered a 13-inch MacBook Pro at 60 W, and it showed the expected results in the Total Phase tests. Although it can provide up to 65 W, the extra 5 W you get compared with our top pick won’t make a big difference, even with more power-hungry devices.

It’s the most compact charger we’ve tested, by a hair. Measuring 1.97 by 1.97 by 1.1 inches, the zPower Turbo is almost identical in size to the Nekteck 60 W charger, and once again, it’s about half the size of Apple’s 61W USB-C Power Adapter . The plain black box won’t turn any heads, but with the contrasting glossy and matte surfaces, it looks nicer than many chargers.

Its included cable is high quality. The 5-foot cable that comes with the ZMI 65 W charger is designed to support up to 100 W charging, which we verified with Total Phase testing. That means you can use it with more power-hungry devices compared with our top pick.

Its warranty is even longer than our top pick’s. The charger and cable combo comes with an 18-month warranty, giving you an additional six months (on top of our other picks’ one-year warranties) to request a replacement if your charger is faulty.

Nekteck’s 100W PD 3.0 GaN Wall Charger connected to a usb-c cable.

Nekteck’s 100W PD 3.0 GaN Wall Charger provides enough power to fast-charge a 2022 or newer MacBook Air, a 2021 or newer 14-inch MacBook Pro, or a 2019 15- or 16-inch MacBook Pro, and it costs less than half the price of Apple’s 96W USB-C Power Adapter. It’s smaller, too.

You can find even smaller high-power-draw chargers, but they’re a lot more expensive than this particularly affordable model. We think it provides a great balance of price, size, and power.

An Apple’s 96W Charger next to a The Nekteck 100W PD 3.0 GaN Wall Charger to show the difference in size.

It has a remarkably svelte design. The square power brick is quite compact: Apple’s charger is 3.2 inches square and just over an inch thick, while Nekteck’s is 2.75 inches square and about 1.2 inches thick.

Both the Apple and Nekteck chargers have fold-out prongs, but the prongs on Nekteck’s charger can’t be removed and replaced with a longer cord as they can on an Apple charger. Like our top and runner-up picks, it comes only in black, but it has a sleek look on the whole.

It’s certified safe and accurate. Like the company’s 60 W charger, the 100 W Nekteck charger is USB-IF certified, meaning an independent lab has verified that it meets a set of criteria for safety and performance.

It has a long cable and warranty. This Nekteck charger includes a 6-foot detachable USB-C cable, adding to the value of the package. And if anything happens to the charger itself, Nekteck provides a 12-month warranty.

Our pick for best USB-C laptop and tablet charger that provides more than a hundred watts, the Insignia 140W Dual Port USB-C Compact Wall Charger.

Few laptops need more than 100 W to charge at top speed, but if you have one that does—like a 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 or later, or Dell’s XPS 15 or 17—the Insignia 140W Dual Port USB-C Compact Wall Charger is unparalleled.

It costs about $10 more than Apple’s version at the time of this writing, but it’s just as powerful and compact as that charger, and it has two things the Apple model doesn’t: a second USB-C port and a luxuriously long cable.

It has two powerful ports. Insignia’s charger can pump out up to 145 W total from its two USB-C ports, or up to 140 W from either port. Even if you don’t need the full 140 W for a single device, it’s nice to have some extra power to split between two devices—say, to fast-charge a MacBook Air and an iPad Pro simultaneously.

It’s small, lightweight, and sleek-looking. Like Apple’s 140W USB-C Power Adapter, Insignia’s version weighs just 10 ounces, or about as much as a standard volleyball. It’s squarish in shape, measuring 3.3 by 2.8 by 1.3 inches, and has a convenient fold-up plug.

Like our other picks, it comes in only one color—white—but its rounded edges give it a streamlined, sophisticated look.

The Insignia 140W Dual Port USB-C Compact Wall Charger, placed next to Apple's 140W charger. Insignia's charger is smaller and features a second USB-C port.

It’s pricey, but still a good value for what you get. Costing $110 at the time of this writing, the Insignia charger is the most expensive of our picks (by a lot), but it’s also the most powerful of the bunch, and the only one with multiple charging ports.

It comes with a standout cable. At 8 feet, the removable cable that comes with the Insignia charger is longer than those included with our other picks, and since it’s capable of passing up to 240 W, you can use it with even more powerful devices (few such devices currently exist, but it’s still a nice feature to future-proof your purchase).

The cable is covered in an extra-rugged fabric sheath, and an attached hook-and-loop cable tie helps keep it neatly coiled in your bag.

It’s been cleared by an independent third party. Like all of our picks, this cable is USB-IF certified, ensuring that it meets performance and safety specifications.

It’s backed by a solid warranty and reliable support. This charger-and-cable combo has a one-year warranty, giving you ample time to confirm it’s working properly. Insignia is Best Buy’s in-house electronics brand, and we’ve found the customer support to be helpful and responsive.

If you have a high-powered laptop and frequently travel internationally: Get the HyperJuice 140W PD 3.1 USB-C GaN Charger . It has a 30 W USB-A port, a 100 W USB-C port, and a 140 W USB-C port (the maximum output when multiple ports are in use is 140 W). It’s more expensive than any of our picks, and it’s not USB-IF certified. But it’s lightweight, comes with a cable, has a foldable plug, and includes three international plug adapters.

If you want lots of power and ports in a portable package and you don't need a cable: Get the Anker 747 Charger (GaNPrime 150W) . It has three USB-C ports and one USB-A port with a total maximum output of 150 W. It’s small and light, has a foldable plug, and comes with an unusual accessory—a silicone stabilizer that suctions onto the wall outlet to keep the charger from getting bumped or pulled out. It’s on the pricier side, doesn’t come with a cable, and isn’t USB-IF certified, but if it suits your needs even with those trade-offs, it’s still a great charger.

If you want a charger with three USB-C ports and a super low profile: Get the Belkin Boost Charge 3 Port USB-C Wall Charger with PPS 67W (WCC002dqWH) . It weighs just 3.4 ounces, has a foldable plug, and only juts out about an inch when plugged into a wall outlet. Each of its three USB-C ports has a maximum output of 67 W, or a combined output of 65 W when all three ports are in use. However, it lacks USB-A ports and isn’t USB-IF certified.

Several new models were announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2024, and we plan to test them against our current picks as soon as they become available:

  • Baseus announced the GaN5 Pro Desktop 240W Fast Charger , which it says has a rated maximum output of 240 W (from a single port or split between five ports) and the ability to control your charging preferences remotely via an app.
  • Hyper announced the HyperJuice 100W USB-C GaN Global Charger and HyperJuice 70W Travel Charger with Adapters . The former has a rated maximum output of 100 W, which it splits between three USB-C ports and a USB-A port, and the latter splits 70 W between two USB-C ports and a USB-A port. Both chargers have folding plugs and seem relatively compact.
  • Scosche announced the PowerVolt PD150 , which has a rated maximum output of 150 W that it splits between four USB-C ports.

We also plan to test the following models this spring:

  • Anker Prime 240W 4-Port GaN Desktop Charger (A2342)
  • Belkin BoostCharge Pro 140W 4-Port GaN Wall Charger (WCH014dqWH)
  • Belkin BoostCharge Pro 200W 4-Port USB-C GaN Charger (WCH015dqWH)
  • Nomad Dual Port USB-C 65W Slim Power Adapter
  • Satechi 145W USB-C 4-Port GaN Travel Charger
  • Ugreen Nexode 140W 3-Port USB-C GaN Wall Charger
  • Ugreen Nexode 200W 6-Port USB-C GaN Desktop Charger
  • Ugreen Nexode 300W 5-Port USB-C GaN Desktop Charger

This is not a comprehensive list of all USB-C laptop and tablet chargers we’ve tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our requirements.

Single-port chargers

The Anker 313 Charger (Ace, 45W) offers less power for the size and price compared to most of our picks, and unlike those models, it doesn’t include a cable.

The Anker 717 Charger (140W) performed well in our testing, but unlike our 140 W Insignia pick , it has just one USB-C port, it’s not USB-IF certified, and at this writing it has a fairly low rating (3.3 stars) on Amazon.

The RAVPower 61W GaN Tech Wall Charger is one of the smallest chargers we tested, at 2 by 2 inches and just over an inch thick, but it doesn’t come with a cable.

The following single-port models offer less power for the size and/or price than otherwise comparable models:

  • Anker 713 Charger (Nano II 45W)
  • Anker 715 Charger (Nano II 65W)
  • Apple 96W USB-C Power Adapter
  • Apple 140W USB-C Power Adapter
  • Invzi GaNHub 33W USB-C GaN Charger
  • Satechi 100W USB-C PD Wall Charger
  • Scosche PowerVolt PD60
  • ZMI zPower 33W USB-C Wall Charger

Multiport chargers

The Amazon Basics 100W Four-Port GaN Wall Charger has two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports, and it offers lots of power for the price, but newer multiport options are available that are smaller and lighter and/or come with a cable.

The Anker 737 Charger (GaNPrime 120W) offers a lot of power for its size, and it comes with a handy silicone stabilizer to keep it suctioned securely onto the outlet’s faceplate. However, its oblong shape makes it jut out awkwardly from the wall, it’s not USB-IF certified, and it’s pricier than otherwise comparable models.

The Apple 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter has a super-low profile, and we like that its ports face the floor when it’s plugged in so your cords stay parallel to the wall, saving even more space. However, it doesn’t offer much power for the size and price (the same is true of the standard-sized Apple 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter ).

The Baseus GaN2 4 Ports Fast Charger 100W has a foldable plug, comes with a cable, and it’s one of just a few options with two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports. However, it’s not USB-IF certified, and it offers less power for the size and price than most of our picks.

The HyperJuice 245W GaN Desktop Charger has the highest total output of any charger we’ve tested, though it splits that power among four USB-C ports. Given its peak power, it’s a good size and price, and it comes with an AC extension cable so your ports are always within reach. However, it’s not USB-IF certified, and at 1.2 pounds it’s one of the heaviest models we tested.

The Nekteck 107W USB C Charger (GaN Tech) splits its total wattage between two USB-C ports (one maxes out at 65 W, and the other at 30 W) as well as two USB-A ports, which is less power than we’d recommend for most people’s desks.

The RAVPower 65W GaN Tech Wall Charger (RP-PC145) offers a combined output of 65 W from its two USB-C ports; each can put out that much power when used individually, or they can split it. However, otherwise comparable models have more ports.

The RAVPower 65W GaN Tech Wall Charger (RP-PC133) and RAVPower PD Pioneer 61W 2-Port USB C Wall Charger are good values for what they are, but other options with a similar size, price, and wattage offer more than one USB-C port.

The RAVPower 90W GaN Tech Wall Charger is a former upgrade pick, but otherwise comparable models are more powerful, have more ports, and/or are about the same size.

The Satechi 75W Dual Type-C PD Travel Charger has two USB-C ports, offering 60 W from one port and 18 W from the other, plus two USB-A ports with a combined 12 W output. But it’s an expensive charger, and in our testing neither USB-A port supported that full 12 W on its own, even when nothing else was plugged in. The 108 W version is essentially the same charger, and suffers from the same issues, except it has a 90 W port in place of the 60 W port.

The Ugreen Nexode 100W USB C GaN Charger-4 Ports Wall Charger , and a similar 65 W version , both triggered error messages in our testing software. Also, several customer reviews for each model note that the chargers often reset while charging, rather than delivering a consistent flow of power.

The ZMI zPower Trio 65W Desktop Charger is too low-powered for a desktop charger (its combined output is only 65 W), despite its small size and low price.

We also tested the following multiport models but ultimately dismissed them since otherwise comparable models offer more power for the size, more power for the price, USB-IF certification, a foldable plug, and/or a more packable shape:

Razer's tiny USB-C GaN travel charger packs an incredible 130 watts and four ports

For those on the go, it's hard to beat this new charger with 130 watts output and super compact design.

Razer Gan Charger

What you need to know

  • Razer's first GaN charger packs 130 watts and fits in your pocket.
  • It features two Type-C and two Type-A ports for all your devices.
  • It goes on sale in the coming weeks at $179.99 from Razer and its retail partners.

There is a lot of innovation going on in the field for those not keeping abreast of portable chargers. The latest is Gallium Nitride (GaN), which premiered in early 2020 to replace traditional silicon. The result? We get much smaller wall chargers that can also pack more wattage without burning up the place.

Razer Gan Charger

And with that, Razer is now getting in on the mix with its new $180 USB-C GaN charger. While not cheap, it does a few noteworthy firsts, including offering 130 watts of total power instead of the standard 100 watts of its competitors.

The Razer USB-C GaN travel charger packs two USB-C (100 watts max) and two Type-A (18 watts max). The total maximum is 130 watts. There are other features like Intelligent charging (directs the most efficient charge to each connected device) and Rapid Power Delivery.

When combined with the direct and foldable plug (versus a corded solution), Razer's charger is a minuscule 32 x 77 x 62 mm and weighs just 349 grams making it completely pocketable. And fret not non-US customers as Razer has global adapter power plugs to make it work anywhere.

It also comes in either Razer mercury or straight-up black with some lovely green accents.

Because of the universal nature of the Type-C and Type-A outputs, you can use this charger with any laptop that takes a Type-C charge (Mac or Windows-based), tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches. Of course, if powering a gaming laptop where more than 100 watts is needed to supply the CPU and GPU during gaming, you'll still need the bigger charger that was supplied with the computer – but you can use it for passive charging (when the laptop is in standby).

Current limits of Type-C ports limit it to just 100 watts, but that will change in the coming years as 240 watts will be allowed .

As to when and where you can grab one, Razer says it starts shipping within the next 30 days for $179.99 at Razer.com, RazerStores, and its global retail partners.

In addition to this tiny charger, Razer also introduced its brand-new AMD-powered Blade 14 laptop , and a refreshed Raptor 27 gaming display .

Razer Gan Charger Render

The Razer USB-C GaN Charge delivers 130 watts of total power to its four USB ports (two Type-C, two Type-A). This is one tiny but powerful travel charger with foldable charging prongs and reliance on new Gallium Nitride (GaN) tech.

How-To Geek

What is a gan charger, and why will you want one.

GaN chargers were everywhere at CES 2020. You'll be seeing them more and more when you purchase new devices---and here's why!

Quick Links

The advantages of a gallium nitride charger, what is gallium nitride, why is gallium nitride superior to silicon, where you can buy a gan charger today, the chargers of the future.

Gallium Nitride (GaN) chargers were everywhere at CES 2020 . This modern alternative to silicon means smaller, more efficient chargers and power bricks are on the way. Here's how it works.

GaN chargers are physically smaller than current chargers. This is because gallium nitride chargers don't require as many components as silicon chargers. The material is able to conduct far higher voltages over time than silicon.

GaN chargers are not only more efficient at transferring current, but this also means less energy is lost to heat. So, more energy goes to whatever you're trying to charge. When components are more efficient at passing energy to your devices, you generally require less of them.

As a result, GaN power bricks and chargers will be noticeably smaller when the technology becomes more widespread. There are other benefits, too, such as a higher switching frequency that enables faster wireless power transfer, and bigger "air gaps" between the charger and device.

At present, GaN semiconductors generally cost more than the silicon kind. However, due to improved efficiency, there's a reduced reliance on additional materials, like heatsinks, filters, and circuit elements. One manufacturer estimates cost savings of 10 to 20 percent in this area. This could improve even further once the economic benefit of large-scale production kicks in.

You might even save a bit of money on your power bill since more efficient chargers mean less wasted energy. Don't expect to see a huge change with relatively low-power devices, like laptops and smartphones, though.

Gallium nitride is a semiconductor material that rose to prominence in the 1990s through the manufacture of LEDs. GaN was used to create the first white LEDs, blue lasers, and full color LED displays you could see in daylight. In Blu-ray DVD players, GaN produces the blue light that reads the data from the DVD.

It appears GaN will soon replace silicon in many areas. Silicon manufacturers have worked tirelessly for decades to improve silicon-based transistors. According to Moore's Law  (named after the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and, later, the CEO of Intel, Gordon Moore), the number of transistors in an integrated silicon circuit doubles about every two years.

This observation was made in 1965, and it largely rang true for the last 50 years. In 2010, though, semiconductor advancement slowed below this pace for the first time. Many analysts (and Moore himself) predict Moore's Law will be obsolete by 2025.

Production of GaN transistors ramped up in 2006. Improved manufacturing processes mean GaN transistors can be manufactured in the same facilities as the silicon type. This keeps costs down and encourages more silicon manufacturers to use GaN to produce transistors instead.

The benefits of GaN compared to silicon boil down to power efficiency. As GaN Systems, a manufacturer that specializes in gallium nitride, explained :

"All semiconductor materials have what is called a bandgap. This is an energy range in a solid where no electrons can exist. Simply put, a bandgap is related to how well a solid material can conduct electricity. Gallium nitride has a 3.4 eV bandgap, compared to silicon’s 1.12 eV bandgap. Gallium nitride’s wider bandgap means it can sustain higher voltages and higher temperatures than silicon."

Efficient Power Conversion Corporation, another GaN manufacturer, stated  that GaN is capable of conducting electrons 1,000 times more efficiently than silicon, and with lower manufacturing costs, to boot.

A higher bandgap efficiency means the current can pass through a GaN chip faster than a silicon one. This could result in faster processing capabilities in the future. Simply put, chips made of GaN will be faster, smaller, more power-efficient, and (eventually) cheaper than those made of silicon.

Although they're not yet widespread, you can buy chargers that use GaN tech from companies like Anker and RAVPower . These are USB-C chargers capable of USB-C power delivery for modern laptops.

The Anker PowerPort Atom PD1 is a 30-watt charger with fast charging capabilities. It's designed for phones, tablets, laptops, and more. You'll notice it's around 40-percent smaller than a charger that doesn't use GaN technology. Anker also produces the 60-watt PowerPort Atom PD2 ---which has two USB-C ports, so you can charge multiple devices simultaneously---and the four-port PowerPort Atom III Slim .

RAVPower has a similar line up. Its PD Pioneer 30W  delivers a modest throughput with one USB-C port. The beefier PD Pioneer 61W  handles more power, but still only houses one USB-C port. If you want to use one of these chargers, your laptop must support USB-C power delivery .

Other GaN chargers, like those Aukey showed off at CES 2020 , won't be available until later this year. However, we expect to see many more on the market soon.

Perhaps the most exciting GaN charger on the horizon is the HyperJuice by Sanho . Successfully funded on Kickstarter (it raised more than $2 million), Sanho aims to deliver the world's first (and smallest) 100-watt USB-C charger to backers by February 2020. This will be the first that can power and charge high-end laptops like the MacBook Pro.

The good news is none of these chargers are particularly expensive. The 61-watt RAVPower retails for around $40, and Sanho has announced a price bracket of between $50 to $100 for the retail version of their 100-watt charger. For reference, a brand-new Apple 96-watt USB-C power adapter  retails for $79, and it's considerably larger and heavier than the credit-card-size HyperJuice.

You probably won't see a lot of GaN chargers in the wild until large hardware manufacturers, like Apple and Samsung, start including them with their new computers and smartphones.

Think about it---when was the last time you bought a charger? How many of the chargers plugged in around your house or office came with a past purchase?

If you do decide to start enjoying the charging benefits of GaN now, you can do so without paying the premium normally associated with cutting-edge technology.

7 best fast chargers for all your devices in UAE, for 2024

Best buys electronics.

Recharge laptops and smartphones in minutes with powerful, speedy charging bricks

fast charging

When you purchase a new smartphone, you might notice something unusual: the box is missing a charger.

These days, companies like Samsung and Apple are deliberately excluding USB phone chargers when they sell smartphones, in an attempt to curb e-waste. One charging adapter can be used to power multiple devices, after all. So, if you already charge your tablet or laptop with a USB Type-C charger, it is likely to work just as well for your new smartphone.

But since you’re not getting one right out of the box, it’s up to you to carefully consider your options and budget, and buy a charging brick that meets your requirements.

We spoke with Rinky Rajan, product manager at Newcom (@newcommea on Instagram), a Dubai-based IT distribution company. For those who carry multiple gadgets, she advised: “A larger, multi-port charging brick is better than carrying numerous one-port bricks as they typically offer sufficient wattage power and capabilities.”

However, she cautioned that such bricks tend to be heavier, so they’re not ideal for travel. She added: “Many of these multi-port chargers do not offer the maximum charging power for larger devices, so for someone who wishes to charge their laptop with 150W power, it might be better to keep a separate laptop charger with them.”

In the market right now, there exist 18W (and under) chargers that are primarily designed for smartphones. Then, there are 20W to 30W chargers that are suitable for tablets, and 65W (or higher) chargers that can handle thin or light laptops. There are also chargers with an output of 100W or more, which can handle simultaneous charging for multiple gadgets, even high-performance laptops.

So, do you need a fast charger just for your phone, or would you use it to recharge your tablet and laptop, as well? Do you need a charging brick with many ports? Or a first-party phone charger (like the one supported by OnePlus phones), which would be much faster than standard USB power delivery?

No matter what kind of charging brick you’re looking for, our expert advised us on the best picks for you. Scroll down to read her advice. We’ve curated a list of the best options out there, right now, based on her recommendations, as well as top ratings and user reviews. Pick the one you need, with Amazon Prime and juice up all your devices as early as tomorrow.

1. Best Overall: Targus PowerElite 100W GaN Charger

  • Charge up to four devices simultaneously
  • GaN technology
  • Comes with international plugs
  • Folding prongs for portability

Rajan’s top recommendation is Targus’ PowerElite, for three reasons: “It is compact, compatible with various international plug standards, and features multiple fast-charging ports.” With two USB-C and two USB-A ports, it offers flexibility, so you don’t have to carry separate USB chargers. You can power up to four devices at once, from smartphones to laptops. The charger comes with interchangeable global plugs (UK, Europe and Asia, Australia, and the US), making it ideal for those who work on the go or frequently travel internationally. All ports are capable of fast charging. Rajan explained how Gallium nitride (GaN) impacts the charger’s performance: “[It] makes it more portable and compact than a silicone counterpart with the same charging capabilities. Replacing silicone with GaN also means that the charger preserves its lifetime (by generating less heat) and draws less power from the outlet.” Some reviewers comment, however, that the bulky plug sometimes falls out of wall sockets.

2. Best Value: Anker 735 Charger

  • Charges up to three devices at a time
  • Portable and compact
  • USB-C and USB-A compatibility
  • Can break if dropped, reviewers say

Our next-best pick is Anker 735, which is a 65W charging brick that powers up to three devices at once. With two USB-C ports for laptops and tablets, and a USB-A port for a smartphone or smartwatch, it’s a good size for the average user who would like to power up all essential devices in one go. Reviewers attest to it offering excellent value for money, since it’s light, compact, and compatible with most devices. When you connect one device, it focuses all its 65W Max power into juicing it up as quickly as possible. And when you add more devices, it uses PowerIQ 4.0 technology to detect and distribute power based on the needs of the connected device. Anker also uses GaN technology to deliver faster, more efficient charging speeds than standard power bricks, despite the charger’s compact size. Do note that some reviewers caution its prongs can bend or break if it falls, so be careful when plugging it into the socket.

3. Best 30W Charger: Belkin 30W USB-C Wall Charger

  • Fast power delivery
  • Compatible with Apple and Android devices
  • Comes with a USB-C cable
  • Compact and light
  • Charger may block socket below it

If you’re looking for a solo charger for your smartphone or tablet, consider Belkin’s single-device charger. Compatible with both Apple and Android devices, it can boost the power of an iPhone 13 or Galaxy S22 Ultra from zero to 50 per cent in just 24 minutes. Its dynamic power delivery technology delivers up to 25W for Samsung phones, and up to 27W for iPhone 14 Pros, which is why it’s a reliable, speedy charging brick to have on hand when your device is running low on battery. The brick comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable, so you can charge your phones (or laptops, or tablets) immediately. Do note that while it’s as small as a key, the charging port is at the bottom of the brick, and may block any sockets below it.

4. Best 45W Charger: Belkin Boost Charge Pro Dual USB-C 45W Wall Charger

  • Two-port simultaneous charging
  • Rounded shape, no sharp edges
  • Does not include cable

Another fantastic option from Belkin, this dual USB-C charger offers two USB-C ports with a combined maximum output of 45W. This means you can fast-charge two small devices at once, like an iPhone and a Samsung Galaxy phone, or fast-charge one larger device, like an iPad Pro. The Boost Charge Pro can bring up a Samsung S21+ from zero to 50 per cent in just 27 minutes, and an iPhone 13 to the same point in 28 minutes. The brick uses GaN technology for a safe and efficient process that won’t leave your phone feeling overheated or overcharged. The charger does not include any cables, however, so you’ll have to purchase them separately.

5. Best 65W Charger: UGREEN Nexode 65W USB-C Charger

  • Three-port simultaneous charging
  • GaN technology for increased efficiency and safety
  • Compact and portable
  • Foldable design
  • No cables included

Like our top Anker pick, this UGREEN 65W charger is equipped with two USB-C ports and one USB-A port, allowing you to charge three devices simultaneously. With its PD 3.1 protocol, a single port can pump 65W of power to a MacBook Pro 16-inch laptop, charging it fully in just 1.5 hours. It’s compatible with most brands of smartphones, laptops, tablets and smartwatches, giving you the flexibility and convenience of charging them all with a single brick. Although no cable is included, the Nexode has other useful features going for it, like a travel friendly, foldable design, and always-on temperature detection that keeps your gadgets safe from overheating. Reviewers say it’s extremely fast – some have juiced up powerbanks with 20,000mAh batteries within two hours. Others say its charging speed remains consistent, even when it’s recharging multiple devices.

6. Best 120W Charger: Anker 737 120W GaN Prime Charger

  • Compact design
  • Fast, efficient power delivery
  • Seamlessly charges full-size laptops at high speeds
  • Becomes warm with use

Like our top pick, the Anker 737 supports power delivery for three devices at once – with two USB-C ports and one USB-A port – but it ramps up power to 120W. That’s double the output of Anker 735, and enough to charge a large laptop, along with two other power-hungry devices, like a smartphone and tablet. If you connect a single device, it rapidly charges it at up to 100W. And if you add more gadgets, Anker’s PowerIQ 4.0 technology detects the needs of connected devices and adjusts power delivery automatically for fast, efficient distribution. The brand’s ActiveShield 2.0 intelligently monitors temperature to safeguard connected devices, and the brick is compatible with virtually all electronics, like tablets, notebooks, phones and accessories. Reviewers say it’s reliable and fast, but tends to get warm during extended charging sessions.

Warranty: The manufacturer provides 18-month warranty.

7. Best High-Power Charger: Razer 130W USB-C GaN Charger

  • Four-port simultaneous charging
  • Supports PPS
  • Comes with power plug adapter
  • Slightly bulky

If you’re looking for a charger that can rapidly charge your ultraportable laptop, and have juice to spare, consider Razer’s 130W GaN charger. With four ports – two USB-C and two USB-A – the brick can recharge your smartphone, tablet, laptop and gaming headset, all at the same time. Its two USB-C ports support 100W max each (this power is split into two if both ports are in use, which still means incredibly speedy charging). Its Programmable Power Supply (PPS) technology allows it to modify voltage and current, based on the device’s charging status, which means it’s efficient and safe to use. Although the charger is slightly bulky, it’s ready for travel, since it comes with a convenient power plug adapter that fits most power outlets around the world.

Bonus: Buy with zero per cent installments and pay Dh54.33 for 12 months with select banks.

What are some things to consider before buying a charging brick?

charger

Walk down an aisle with fast chargers, and it boggles the mind – there are so many to choose from. So, where do you start?

Rajan shared several aspects to consider before buying a fast-charging brick:

  • Power intake: Just how much power intake does your device accommodate? Rajan said: “Ideally, devices capable of fast charging should be charged by compatible power bricks. On the other hand, although devices not capable of fast charging will generally not face damage by receiving more power than they are capable of utilising, it is good to double-check the limits of your device before making a purchase.”
  • Utility: What are you using the charger for? If it’s for temporary use, you’ll likely not require a relatively expensive multi-port charger, or one that’s suitable for travel. Depending on what you are using it for, you “would benefit from considering factors such as the number and type of ports supported by a charging brick and its weight and portability”, Rajan advised.
  • Travel considerations: Plug compatibility becomes a primary concern when you’re looking for a charger that you can use internationally. Rajan said: “There are multi-port charging bricks that come with interchangeable plugs that meet different international plug standards (namely, UK, US, and Europe), and these may be helpful for individuals who travel internationally frequently enough to require this level of flexibility.”
  • Credible brands: Don’t settle, when you’re buying a charger – it may harm your device, if it’s not up to the mark. Rajan said: “Buyers should pay attention to the manufacturer of the charging brick they wish to purchase. Since regulatory testing requirements are more stringent in some countries than others, credible manufacturers that sell products worldwide are more likely to meet the necessary regulatory testing and standards. Although rare, some manufacturers do not meet such standards, which can ultimately damage the charging device, even the user (if it catches fire or emits a shock).”

Minimum wattage guidelines

You would think the greater the power, the faster your device will charge. But a smartphone doesn’t require a 100W multi-port charger, just like a laptop won’t recharge rapidly when it’s charging on a brick that’s below 65W.

To break down the wattage requirements of specific electronics, we asked Rajan for some clarity. Here’s what she said:

Smartwatch: Smartwatches are small, delicate devices compared to phones. So, if a compatible charging wall adapter is unavailable, charge them using a laptop or desktop as the power source.

Smartphone: 10W to 18W is standard wattage for charging a phone (18W or more if the phone supports fast charging). Anything below 10W is not recommended, as charging a smartphone with lower than standard wattage can damage the battery in the long run.

Tablet: 20W to 30W, which ranges between standard and fast-charging. The ideal power in this range will depend on the device’s capabilities, but keep in mind that anything below can take too long to charge the device (between eight to nine hours instead of two to three hours) and result in battery damage in the long run.

Laptop: 65W+ is recommended for laptops, although 100W is much better, and anything above that would be ideal for those with laptops capable of handling more power.

Rajan added: “If someone prefers using a wall outlet, they must ensure that the adapter is UL-certified and offers a power output of five volts or one ampere (or less). Avoid fast chargers for smartwatches as they can damage the watch by delivering surplus power in the long run.”
