The team initially consisted of 13 members, including individuals such as Richard Anim, Kwadwo Saka, Kwame Peprah, Kofi Peprah, and others. One member dropped out due to work commitments in Senegal, and two others left the expedition in Morocco.

Their route began in Accra, weaving through various Ghanaian cities including Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, and Sunyani, before crossing into neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire. From there, they ventured through Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco, finally entering Europe through Spain via a Mediterranean ferry. Their journey showcased the diverse terrains and climates of Africa and Europe.

Ghanaian group makes history driving from Accra to London on daring 10,000km trip

ghanaians trip to london

A group of adventurous Ghanaians who embarked on an epic 10,000km road trip late last month from Ghana’s capital Accra to London, UK, finally made it to their destination on Sunday. The group, known as Wanderlust Ghana, arrived around 12:00 pm GMT (1:00 pm BST) after an expedition that took the team through various African countries and destinations in Europe.

They started the road trip from Accra on Sunday, July 23, 2023, through Ghanaian cities such as Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, and Sunyani to Dormaa before entering Cote d’Ivoire through Golokrom, citinewsroom.com reported .

From Cote D’Ivoire, the group went through Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco, and finally entered Europe through Spain by a Mediterranean ferry. All in all, in Europe, they traveled through Spain, Monaco, France, Italy, Germany, and The Netherlands and arrived in London on Sunday, August 6.

“I’m in. We made history,” Kwadwo Saka wrote on Twitter, now known as X, on Sunday.

A team of 12 including Richard Anim, Kwadwo Saka, Kwame Peprah, Kofi Peprah, and a female auto repair technician called Nana Afua Serwaa started the journey but one person dropped off in Senegal due to work reasons and two others also left in Morocco.

Vehicles used for the journey included a Mercedez Benz G-Wagon, two Toyota Landcruisers (V8), Lexus RX 350 and a Ford F150, Raptor, all Ghanaian registered. Members of the team revealed that they used about 250 liters of fuel daily and covered an average of 800 to 900 kilometers per day. In spite of the various challenges including frequent brake pad changes and interactions with authorities in Mauritania, the group said their time in Senegal and Morocco was amazing due to the countries’ infrastructure, hospitality and beauty.

The idea to drive from Accra, Ghana, to London, United Kingdom, was planned in 2018 by Kwame Peprah, who asked some friends to come along, with many rubbishing the idea. Auto marketing companies were also not willing to sponsor the trip. But after getting some responses from a few friends, the team decided to start the journey in 2020. Then Covid-19 ruined their plans. Later, the group did some traveling within Ghana to gain some experience before embarking on the daring road trip to London.

“We are explorers and we are doing this for fun,” one member of the group told Ghanaian station Peace FM after making it to Spain. “We’ve read about people driving from Europe to Ghana all the time, and we also planned to do it and we are almost there.”

“We’ve been driving around our continent, we’ve been driving around our country and we decided to take it to the next level,” Kwabena Peprah told the BBC. “But most importantly we knew we will get some traction with the media and we’d use it to raise funds to help underserved communities in our country through EduSpots, which is a philanthropy organization, which creates educational hotspots for schools in deprived areas,” he added.

After their warm reception in London, the team said they were planning to engage with the Ghanaian community and the Ghana High Commission to pitch their philanthropy to them. They will also be having a party with the Ghanaian community next Saturday.

The 13 Adventurous Team

Comprising twelve men and one woman, the team from Wanderlust Ghana ,  set out on an epic adventure to drive from Accra to London.

This group was driven by an insatiable thirst for exploration and a desire to reverse the narrative of foreign travellers coming to Africa.

How The Journey From Ghana To London Began

The expedition commenced from Accra, with the team’s estimated arrival in London scheduled for August 6 or 7, 2023.

Covering a staggering distance of 10,000 kilometres, the team embarked on a journey that took them through diverse landscapes, cultures, and borders.

The Motivation Behind the Journey

Inspired by tales of travellers journeying to Ghana and other African nations, the team decided to flip the script and embark on their own incredible journey.

Speaking about their motivation, one of the explorers disclosed: “ We are explorers and we are doing this for fun. We read about people driving from Europe to Ghana all the time, and we also planned to do it”.

Preparations They Made For the Big Adventure

Before embarking on their transcontinental journey, the team carried out a feasibility test drive to Togo.

This served as a vital step in their planning process, allowing them to understand routes, road conditions, and border crossings.

Beyond relying solely on digital maps, they built relationships with locals, preparing themselves for the challenges ahead

Challenges The Adventurous Team Might Have Faced

13 Ghanaians Successfully Arrive In London

Undertaking such a massive road trip may come with logistical challenges, including visas, border crossings, and daily planning.

The food, vehicle and petrol they use on the journey might be another massive challenge they faced.

The team’s convoy consisted of various vehicles, including Ford Raptors, Toyota Land Cruisers, a Nissan Patrol, a Lexus RX350, and a Ford Ranger.

They opted for a convoy instead of carpooling to assess how efficiently a large group could cross borders and handle the journey’s logistical demands.

The team’s courageous expedition allowed them to navigate these hurdles, experiencing the diverse cultures and unique road conditions of each region they passed through.

The Arrival of the Adventurous Team

Amazingly, the team of 13 successfully arrived at their destination, London on the day they had planned.

In a video shared by the teams, they could be seen jubilating and singing songs of joy due to their successful arrival. Family, friends and Ghanaians as a whole have shared in their joy.

As the team arrived in London, they achieved a historic accomplishment that stands as a testament to human determination, adventurous spirit, and the power of exploration.

Their journey from Accra to London demonstrates the possibilities that await those who dare to dream big and embark on extraordinary adventures.

In a world where travel is often simplified by air travel and digital navigation tools, the story of these thirteen intrepid explorers reminds us of the beauty of the open road, the thrill of the unknown, and the connections we can build through personal experiences.

Their journey will undoubtedly inspire others to step out of their comfort zones, explore new horizons, and create their own remarkable stories of triumph and adventure.

Ghana's Ibrahim Mahama: The artist clothing London's brutalist icon

  • Published 6 days ago

'Purple Hibiscus', an installation by Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, on display at the Barbican.

London's grey and angular Barbican Centre is now a sea of pink - its frontage covered in cloth that billows in the breeze as if dancing.

"It started off as a joke," visual artist Ibrahim Mahama tells the BBC.

"When I was invited here, I was looking at the grey concrete and the grey weather. I thought, why not use something more colourful as a contrast?"

So the 37-year-old turned to local experts in northern Ghana near his studio in Tamale, who weaved and sewed this project on a colossal scale.

During three months, a team of 1,000 people hand-stitched 2,000 square metres of striped cotton, before decorating it with 130 traditional smocks known as batakari.

Purple Hibiscus is the result of that toil. It is also a nod to London's famous rag trade - the city's fabric merchants, tailors and dressmakers who once dominated the area where the Barbican Centre now stands.

Ghana too has its own long and rich history of textiles - perhaps best known for its bright, patterned kente cloth.

After independence from the UK in 1957, the state initially invested in the garment and cloth industries but they later went into decline because of economic turmoil and cheap Chinese imports.

Textiles have made a comeback in recent years - despite a struggling economy - and Ghanaian fabrics are desired for their high quality and interesting designs.

"I always say that doctors repair the body, but artists fill the body with the soul. And in any society, art is the soul that drives it - to evolve in a more conscious way," says Mahama.

Ibrahim Mahama.

Community for him is key - his studio is open to visitors and he plans to open an art school for children.

Purple Hibiscus and Mahama's other large-scale public art installations reference the power of collective labour and the memories that textiles contain.

Jute sacks - used to transport cocoa, rice and charcoal - were draped over the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana's capital city. It was Mahama's way of exploring the history of trade in commodities and globalisation.

His latest project at the Barbican showcases a typically Ghanaian item he has been collecting since 2012.

Batakari - also called smocks or binŋmah in Mahama's Dagbani language - are tunics made from hand-woven strips of cotton then sewn together to create a distinctive striped pattern.

They originated in northern Ghana but are now worn throughout the country and the diaspora by men and women, on formal and informal occasions.

Some are passed down the generations - decades-old and unwashed - so "they contain the sweat, the economic struggles, the personal struggles, and the spirit of people", says Mahama.

"I like decay quite a lot. When something is at that point of its life, I always think that is when it is beginning to live more."

Ibrahim Mahama, Purple Hibiscus, 2023-2024.

Among the batakari on show in Purple Hibiscus are those donated by old chiefs. Others came from ordinary families who would trade Mahama their old ones for a new one, and others still were specially commissioned.

Many bear yellowish stains of sweat - and in some cases, urine. Some families would not give Mahama their batakari until they had put urine on it because they believe that the family's past, present and future is contained in the decades-old garment.

"They believe that when they do that, it somehow desacralises the material and then the soul will somehow escape away from it," explains Mahama.

"As an artist, I think it's even more interesting aesthetically."

Mahama is in some ways more focused on the process and experience of creating art than the final product.

Crafting Purple Hibiscus was so big a task that the team worked in Tamale's sports stadium, built for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament.

Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama poses for a photograph in front of his installation entitled 'Purple Hibiscus' at the Barbican centre in central London on April 9, 2024.

Bringing the textile creation over to London to drape on the Barbican's post-World War Two brutalist forms was a feat that makes Mahama proud.

"I thought what could be more beautiful than creating this relationship between these two labour forms - one that is coming from a post-war era, and then one that is coming from the 21st Century but also steeped in traditions and histories of the pre-colonial era."

Today it is an extraordinary sight, especially when a blue sky sets off the pink just so.

The billowing forms that batakari take when their wearers dance has always fascinated Mahama, who says they create a kind of optical effect.

It seems to me that, when the wind blows in a certain way, Purple Hibiscus is performing its own special dance.

Purple Hibiscus is at the Barbican until 18 August, as part of Unravel: The Power and Politics of Textiles In Art, which is open until 26 May.

Mayor ignores San Fran hellhole for a trip to China in pursuit of pandas

You know what would help the crime-ridden, drug-infested, feces-festooned streets of San Francisco?

Pandas. A couple of cute, fluffy, giant pandas.

And, being every bit the leader she is, Democrat Mayor London Breed jetted off to China for a week to bring some of those irresistible rascals home to the San Francisco Zoo.

London Breed will be renting pandas from China. Will they come with their own fentanyl? #SanFrancisco #askingforafriend #PandaGate pic.twitter.com/8gG2acJ5Zs — Citizenj17 ✝️ (@citizenj17) April 25, 2024

“According to Breed’s office, the mayor traveled to China for a week-long, multi-city journey that included meetings with government, business and airline officials. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng invited Breed to the country during last year’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, which was held in San Francisco,” Fox News Digital reports.

“We think that with increased flights, business opportunities, pandas, the economic opportunities for San Francisco will be significant,” Breed told reporters before her departure.

She returned to Fog City on Sunday with some good news.

Sure, San Francisco is “projected to face a $245 million deficit in the coming fiscal year, which starts in July, and a $555 million deficit in the following year,” according to Axios , but if she can scrape together the cash and Beijing approves, those adorable bamboo bandits will soon be sitting in a California enclosure.

Breed doesn’t know exactly how much getting them to San Francisco will cost her troubled taxpayers, but she’s confident she can make it happen.

“We expect a pair of pandas, and they are hopefully expected to come as soon as we’re able to raise the resources, do all the permitting, continue to work with the wildlife and conservation group in Beijing for all the paperwork,” the mayor told KTVU.

It’s happening: the pandas are coming to San Francisco! These Giant Pandas will honor our deep cultural connections and our Chinese and API heritage. They will bring residents and visitors from all over who come to visit them at the SF Zoo. pic.twitter.com/IInDO26QyI — London Breed (@LondonBreed) April 19, 2024

Strangely, not everyone appreciated Breed’s efforts.

“If you asked a thousand San Franciscans what the biggest problem facing the city is, not a single one of them would say that the zoo doesn’t have pandas,” Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher told Fox News Digital. “They would say they’re tired of rising crime, sick of soaring homelessness and fed up with a broken government that ignores the city’s problems.”

“Rather than boosting public relations for the Chinese Communist Party, Mayor Breed should focus on fixing San Francisco’s death spiral,” Gallagher suggested.

California Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones was equally unimpressed.

“Mayor London Breed’s decision to jet off to China in pursuit of pandas while her city grapples with escalating crime and homelessness is a disgraceful evasion of her responsibilities to ensure the safety of San Francisco residents,” he said. “Her misguided focus on photo ops abroad only highlights her utter disregard for the urgent needs of those suffering in her own backyard.”

Back in SF after an incredible trip to China! As many of you may know, we’re thrilled to be welcoming our very own pandas soon. I wanted to share a bit of my experience visiting them at the Shanghai Wildlife Park. Here in San Francisco, preparations for their arrival are… pic.twitter.com/xZlDnpLqH2 — London Breed (@LondonBreed) April 23, 2024

Crime is an issue in the City by the Bay.

According to Fox News Digital:

In most categories, crimes in San Francisco reported to police declined in 2023 compared to 2022, but not as much as the rest of the country, statistics from the FBI show. In 2023, there were 50,744 crimes reported in the city across all categories. In 2022, San Franciscans reported 54,649 crimes, a 7.2% decrease year-over-year.

However, robberies increased 14.8% in 2023 over the prior year, and motor vehicle thefts went up 6.3% from 2022. So far this year, the city has recorded 11,077 crimes, down 29.7% from the same period in 2022.

San Francisco International Airport spokesperson Doug Yakel is backing Breed’s China trip. With the hope that three China-based airlines will do business at SFO, he says increased air travel could mean millions of dollars for the city.

“It’s so powerful what it represents, not only for our airport but for local economies,” Yakel told KTVU. “We look at a single flight, and I’m talking a daily flight between a foreign destination like China and the U.S. to SFO. It can be upwards of $175 million in annual revenue and 1,200 jobs in the Bay Area total, and that’s just one flight.”

Perhaps, but Jones believes Breed should leave the pandas to San Diego.

“[E]veryone knows that the San Diego Zoo is world-famous for their panda exhibit,” Jones said. “Mayor Breed should focus on fixing San Francisco rather than competing with San Diego over pandas.”

Ruben Amorim silent on West Ham links after trip to London

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim dismisses reports of him being in talks with Liverpool. (0:38)

Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim is remaining tight-lipped about his future following his short trip to London amid speculation he could take the reins at West Ham .

Amorim, 39, smiled at the cameras but refused to talk to reporters after landing at Lisbon airport in the early hours of Tuesday.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Amorim had travelled with his agent Raul Costa on a private jet to London after Monday's training session to reportedly discuss a potential move to West Ham.

The aim of the trip, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola , was for Amorim and his agent to evaluate an official offer that he had received from West Ham earlier this month.

Sources have told ESPN that Amorim is one of the main candidates the east London club is considering to replace David Moyes.

A Bola add that West Ham's offer is more lucrative than Liverpool 's.

Sources told ESPN that Amorim has a contract with Sporting until June 2026 with a €20 million ($21.3m) release clause set for foreign clubs.

He is considered one of the top candidates to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer after Xabi Alonso announced his intention to remain at Bayer Leverkusen next season.

Earlier this month, Amorim angrily denied reports he had held talks with Liverpool or any other club regarding his future.

Amorim previously said he could not guarantee that he would continue at Sporting next season.

Sporting are aware of Premier League clubs' interest in Amorim but the Portuguese outfit remains hopeful that the coach will continue managing the league leaders for a fifth straight season.

While Sporting have not started a search for Amorim's potential successor, the club is reportedly keeping an eye on the market.

Amrim's team are seven points clear of nearest rivals Benfica in the Primeira Liga and are also through to the Portuguese Cup final.

Sporting are back in action on Sunday when they face FC Porto in the league.

Delta is reinforcing its No. 1 position as the largest U.S. carrier to Africa this winter by relaunching daily* service to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS), from  New York-JFK on Dec. 1. Fleet enhancements in service to Accra, Ghana (ACC), and South Africa are also underway.

The airline carries more than half a million customers between the U.S. and Africa each year on more than 34 weekly flights.

“These enhancements reflect our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning. “We’re expanding our options for customers to experience the premium service and elevated hospitality they expect from Delta.”    Delta currently operates daily service between Atlanta and Lagos and, with the resumption of daily New York-JFK service, will offer a total of 14 weekly flights to Nigeria in December through the first half of January and 10 weekly flights for the remainder of winter 2024.

Customers on this flight will have a choice of Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin experiences on the  Airbus A330-200 . Once on board, customers in Delta One can look forward to an extensive food and beverage program that includes thoughtfully curated menu options, as well as specialty snacks and premium beer, wine and spirits. Customers flying in Delta Premium Select will have more space to relax and stretch out, with a wider seat, deeper recline, an adjustable footrest and leg rest.

All customers can enjoy a wide selection of in-flight entertainment options – movies, TV series, music, podcasts and more – via Delta Studio. Delta also partners with diverse suppliers worldwide for in-flight products such as artisan-crafted amenity kits and beverages like Thrive Farmers Tea.

Premium upgrades in service to Ghana and South Africa

As the first U.S. airline to initiate service to Ghana, Delta remains the largest operator in the U.S.-Ghana market, offering year-round daily service from New York-JFK.

Furthermore, in late October 2024, Delta will upgrade its aircraft serving Ghana to the 281-seat Airbus A330-900neo , adding nearly 1,000 more seats each week, providing 30% more capacity between Ghana and the U.S. The aircraft features four differentiated cabin experiences: Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

Delta One Suites feature a sliding door for enhanced privacy, memory-foam mattress and soft bedding made from recycled materials. Delta One customers can also enjoy more beverage options and a seasonal chef-curated four-course meal.      Delta is also upgrading its aircraft from Atlanta to South Africa, where it operates 10 weekly flights year-round to Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT). With the introduction of the higher-premium 35H  Airbus A350-900 , this upgrade will provide an additional eight Delta One Suite seats, bringing the total to 40, along with improved operational performance. Customers can look forward to these changes for JNB effective Jun. 20 and CPT on Sept. 9.   For more information and to book travel, visit delta.com .
