LOOKING BACK 1921–1987

The Orpheum Theatre, originally known as the Hennepin, opened in 1921 and seats 2,579. Designed by the Milwaukee firm of Kirchoff and Rose in a Beaux Arts style, its first performers included the Marx Brothers with more than 70,000 guests attending the opening week run. Billed as the largest vaudeville house in the country when opened, it became a major outlet for such entertainers as Jack Benny, George Burns and Fanny Brice. The Orpheum featured a playroom and day care off the mezzanine lobby and backstage had eight floors of dressing rooms. As vaudeville declined in the 1930s-’40s, the Orpheum became one of Minneapolis’s major cinema houses, with Gone with the Wind in 1940 selling out every show for three weeks. It also hosted big bands including Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie. In 1959, Ted Mann, owner of six other downtown Minneapolis theatres including the Pantages, bought the Orpheum and brought in touring productions including My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof. Movies also continued to be shown, with the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball shattering box office records. The Orpheum set a Minneapolis record for first run engagements of Best Picture Oscar winners–nine in all–including From Here to Eternity in 1953 and The Godfather in 1972.

RENOVATION 1988–PRESENT

In 1988, the Minneapolis Community Development Agency purchased the Orpheum from singer Bob Dylan and his brother, David Zimmerman, who owned the theatre. Restoration began in 1993 and, to accommodate elaborate Broadway productions, the Orpheum stage was extended almost 20 feet, with the back wall of the theatre painstakingly removed brick by brick. Unexpected architectural discoveries made during the renovation of the lobby included six Pompeiian friezes previously hidden under velour curtains, fake window grids and a false wall. The chandelier in the main auditorium is the theatre centerpiece. It is 15 feet high and weighs 2,000 pounds. Following a $10 million restoration, the Orpheum re-opened in December 1993 with a concert by Heart and in January 1994 with the Broadway production of Miss Saigon. Productions that have originated at the Orpheum include Victor/Victoria, the pre-Broadway world premiere of Disney’s The Lion King and the national tour premiere of Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA. Hennepin Theatre Trust is now the owner and operator of this magnificent structure.

Review: 'hamilton' finally comes to minneapolis and, yes, it's great.

Many audience members for touring Broadway shows probably wonder, "But is it as good as in New York?" and the answer for "Hamilton" is, "No."

It's better.

It must be tempting to calcify a musical, particularly one as megasuccessful as "Hamilton," and we've certainly seen examples here of roadshows that try to duplicate, beat by beat, the originals. That's not happening with the hip-hop-based story of the loves and ambitions of Mr. Face-on-the-$10-Bill, "Hamilton," whose producers know a show only lives if its actors are encouraged to find something vital and new in it.

That starts with Alexander Hamilton, Joseph Morales, the cast member who, on the surface, most resembles the actor who created the role (and the whole show), Lin-Manuel Miranda. As depicted in the musical, inspired by Ron Chernow's bestselling biography, the title character is a brash and tactless orphan who works his way into General George Washington's inner circle and, by marrying well-connected Eliza Schuyler, into New York's high society. He could come off as a creep but Morales makes him likeably modest, his soaring tenor finding musical colors you won't hear on the cast album.

"Hamilton" works only if its Aaron Burr is Hamilton's equal, and this production has that. Nik Walker's witty take on Burr is sleazier, less elegant than Leslie Odom Jr.'s was in the original production. Walker reveals early on that Burr, whose rise to power mirrored Hamilton's, is a schemer who believes only in himself. He's an ironic snake from the get-go, which makes it entertaining to follow his machinations and devastating when his illusions are stripped away. It all comes together in his showstopping "The Room Where It Happens," which feels like both Broadway and church, in the best possible way.

This production's boldest choices are made by Jon Patrick Walker, whose King George III is not an arch, over-it autocrat but a whiny baby who has learned that his lover (i.e., America) dumped him and who can't even. It's a big, hilarious tantrum of a performance and, with King George only simpering on for three quick songs, Walker is smart to realize he can get away with a lot.

Marcus Choi's Washington is on the opposite end of the performing spectrum. His is a quiet, authoritative rendering of a man who knows himself better than anyone else on stage. Choi's work is understated, hitting full power only in Washington's "One Last Time," but his dignity anchors the show, particularly in a moving sequence when Hamilton challenges his father figure, shouting, "Call me 'son' one more time!"

Ta'Rea Campbell is also exceptional as Angelica Schuyler, Hamilton's sister-in-law and, perhaps, the love of his life. Campbell provides a calm center right up to her blistering, fast-rapping "Satisfied," which she positions at the midpoint between an operatic aria and Nicki Minaj's iconic rap for Kanye West's "Monster."

The production looks exactly like it did on Broadway, with one upgrade. Maybe it's because it's my second time and I knew what to expect, but the choreography, which previously struck me as too literal, now seems perfect, accentuating and focusing the ginormous story of "Hamilton." Really, the only flaws I can find are that Desmond Sean Ellington raps too muddily to be understood in the first act as Hercules Mulligan (a standby, Ellington performed on opening night instead of the regular Mulligan, Fergie L. Philippe). And it is ridiculously disruptive to start the second act when literally one-third of theatergoers have not made it back to their seats.

One slight disappointment newcomers to the much-hyped show may experience is that it's not quite as — sorry — revolutionary as they've heard. Despite the innovative concept and clever touches like turning the Declaration of Independence into a song lyric, "Hamilton" is, it turns out, just a musical, one that's structured a lot like "Les Miserables," with Burr as Javert to Hamilton's Jean Valjean. But what's breathtaking about "Hamilton" is how expertly it does all the things a musical can do, from catchy songwriting to visual moments that transcend the power of words.

Watching this talented and diverse cast, I kept thinking that Manuel's insistence that this story of yesterday should look like America looks today has given us a chance to enjoy performers who, as recently as 10 years ago, would not have been considered to play our very white Founding Fathers and Mothers. In fact, the show's concept essentially says that, although this story seems to take place in the past, it's really the present, when we're realizing the fragility of the values these statesmen gave their lives for, when we're still struggling to realize the self-evident truth that all men (and women) are created equal.

Things to Do

The cast of "Hamilton"

“Hamilton” fans will have to wait a little longer to see the much-loved show. Hennepin Theatre Trust announced Thursday that the blockbuster musical’s local tour stop has been postponed from July 27 through Aug. 29 this summer to April 4 through May 7, 2023.

Season ticket holders will be automatically moved to the rescheduled date and contacted directly by Hennepin Theatre Trust by email with further information. Ticket holders have the option of a credit, refund or the ability to donate the value of their tickets to Hennepin Theatre Trust. Individual show ticket sales will be announced at a later date.

With Broadway tours closed for more than a year, “launching new and existing tours requires months of production work that may include building sets and costumes, casting and rehearsals before getting back on the road. Touring Broadway depends on an interconnected network of cities as shows travel from theater to theater. Cities will reopen independently based on local governing requirements, show schedules and venue availability,” according to a news release.

Interview: HAMILTON's Conroe Brooks

The biggest show in the world has finally landed in Minneapolis. #HamiltonMSP is the most anticipated musical ever to play the Orpheum stage, as ticket sales and local hype prove. And this show is for real -- it's just as good as you heard and worth every expensive "Abe Lincoln." (Some lucky folks will see it for one "Ham" each performance - see More Info below.) Care is taken to ensure audiences on this #PhillipTour (or #HamiltourToo) get the same experience as audiences in NYC and Chicago. Part of that is the extremely talented cast. Every member is integral to the telling of the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

One of those people is ensemble member Conroe Brooks . Brooks also understudies both George Washington and King George. He took a little time to provide some insight to Minneapolis fans about being a part of this unprecedented show in this exclusive interview that confirms all my suspicions. Being in HAMILTON is the best job ever. Landing in Minneapolis for six weeks is the Cherry (& Spoonbridge) on top.

First, can you talk about how you were cast in HAMILTON (Phillip Tour Company) and/or how you first got involved with the show?

I submitted a self-tape of myself singing and rapping to an open casting email. Never thought anything would ever come of it. But a couple months later a got a reply to send a tape doing a couple songs from the show. About 12 auditions over almost two years later I got the call that I was cast.

How long did you rehearse with the cast for the tour before hitting the road? Did you work with the Cabinet (of course, I mean Lin, Tommy, Andy and Alex) to learn the show?

We rehearsed for about seven weeks in NYC. The Cabinet would come in from time to time to see the progress, give notes and mostly inspire us with how grateful they were for us as a whole new cast learning this show from scratch.

It looks like your background is more in television (from your bio - readers, see below); have you done stage work before?

I started doing theater in junior high and throughout high school. But I haven't done a musical in over 10 years. So this was a big and scary leap to be cast in the biggest show in the world. To be honest, I wasn't even sure I'd be able to do it and remember all the harmonies, choreography, or that my voice would last for eight shows a week. But it all worked out and I'm having the time of my life. Definitely feel like I belong on the stage.

You've obviously learned three parts for this show; how long do you usually have before you have to go on as one of the main characters you understudy? Have you played both parts on this tour, and in Minneapolis at all?

Sometimes we only find out the day of that we're going up. So you always gotta be ready. I have played both parts several times already. I haven't done either here in Minneapolis yet, but I will be playing King George next week (Sept 24-29) because our King will be on vacation.

What has been your biggest challenge and your favorite part of being in Hamilton?

My biggest challenge has been navigating my emotions with the loss of my mom in the middle of all this. I lost her pretty suddenly to brain cancer toward the beginning of the audition process. So unfortunately she never got to see on stage. That's really really hard. I struggle with that every single day. I sometimes get hit with emotion in the middle of a show. Luckily this show is full of passion so I'm sometimes able to manage it in a way that works for what I'm doing in the scene. But ultimately, her loss keeps me grateful for what I have, the beautiful people around me, and especially my dad and my sister. My favorite part about being in Hamilton is seeing how it's changing peoples' lives. We hear that every time at the stage door and it never gets old.

What is your favorite scene in the show?

As ensemble, my favorite scene is "Yorktown." We all get so hype at that part and it's just so moving. As GW, it's "One Last Time." That song is incredible and to get to act out that time in history is incredible.

Is being in HAMILTON as big of an acting workout as it seems? The ensemble all seems to be on stage and moving constantly -- are you worn out by the end each night?

Yes!!! We definitely have to take care of our bodies to be able to do this show. We also have a wonderful physical therapist that travels with us. We would fall apart without her.

As we're the Minneapolis section of BroadwayWorld, and I've seen that you've been getting out and having a good time in our city, I have to ask: have you ever been to Minneapolis before, and what's your impression been? What have you done that you especially enjoyed?

I never been to Minneapolis and I have clearly been missing out. I love it here. The people are friendly, great food, beautiful scenery. And I, of course, love my visit to Paisley Park. I'm a big Prince fan.

You are doing an Instagram takeover for Meet Minneapolis (BTW, I work there and for BroadwayWorld) - first, thanks! Second - any plans for that day (9/18/18 -- catch his Instagram story from @MeetMinneapolis here *)? Do you enjoy getting to know the cities you're touring in? Planning to go to the sculpture park and Cov restaurant that a friend said I must hit up. One of my favorite things about being on tour is getting to know a little bit about each city. It's such a gift.

How have you been received by Minneapolis audiences? I think I saw you and a couple cast mates mention the opening night audience was "lit" -- has the reception surprised you, energized you or been what you're used to?

I have been surprised by how awesome the audiences have been here. We can see that they are really loving the show. The audiences are usually always great, but here I think we're a bit closer than other theaters and we can really feel their energy.

Back to the show, what is one thing you'd recommend to anyone who has not seen the show before to pay attention to as they see it for the first time?

Listen to the soundtrack and get familiar with it. And maybe read a little synopsis on the story. The words come at you a mile a minute and it's nonstop. There is a lot going on visually so being somewhat familiar with the songs is helpful. It won't spoil anything for you by listening to the soundtrack.

It seems like you and the other cast members are just having the time of your lives on stage and what you show the world on social media. Is being in HAMILTON the best gig ever?

YES!!! And the cast is the best ever. That's what makes it the best gig ever. We're very lucky to have great people in this cast. And we're all grateful to be doing this incredible, life-changing show.

What's something that fans of the show would never guess about what's going on backstage?

We are quite silly backstage sometimes because we're enjoying ourselves so much. But as soon as we hit the stage we click back in.

Finally, is there anything else you'd like to share with your Minneapolis fans?

I'd just love to thank the Minneapolis fans for welcoming us with such love.

'Hamilton' tour cast opens up about AAPI representation in the arts

Celebrating the cast of 'hamilton': aapi heritage month.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. By now, you've at least heard of Hamilton: An American Musical. It's the Tony Award-winning play that has ben selling out on Broadway for years and has touring companies crisscrossing several continents. As you may have noticed, the cast looks quite different from the men and women found in your history books.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - You’ve either seen "Hamilton" or at least heard of it. It’s the Tony award-winning musical that has been selling out on Broadway for years and generating a lot of buzz around town recently. Often recognized for its diverse cast, this year’s Angelica tour features six actors of Asian descent.

David Park, who now stars as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson has been hoping to land a role in the show since 2017, when he won the lottery and got front row seats. He stuck around after the show to meet Lin-Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of the show with some bold words to share.

"I was like, ‘Hey Lin keep this show open for a while because I want to be in it someday,’" David said.

Fast-forward to November 2021, David’s vision manifested into reality. However, pursuing a career in the arts isn’t all that common for Asian-Americans. Like for swing performer Kendyl Sayuri Yokoyama, whose parents are in the medical and science field. Although she didn’t go in that direction, Kendyl knew right away theater was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

Breaking into the industry wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows for these actors though. Ethnicity being front and center.

"In school you kind of study roles and as an Asian actor, you're studying roles that you could play that normally a non-Asian person plays or you're doing 'The King and I' in rep class and that's not who I am," said David.

Kendyl added how cutthroat Asian-specific roles have gotten, "I auditioned for Addams’ Family years ago for community theater and they were like, ‘Sweetie you can’t be Wednesday because your parents have to be Asian.’ Even I was nervous to not be Asian enough for Asian jobs. That’s how competitive we all made us to be. There’s only one spot for an Asian person."

Thanks to shows like "Hamilton" that focus on color-blind casting, there are more opportunities for all. As swing performer Reanne Dawn Gutierrez Acasio recalled, "Families can look however they want nowadays and I’ve never run into an issue with, ‘Oh we have an Asian Schuyler sister, a Black Schuyler sister, a Latina Schuyler sister, they don’t look like a family.’ That has never been, I don’t think that has ever been an issue at least vocally."

Breaking the mold of success: AAPI actors in 'Hamilton'

Actors in the cast of "Hamilton" are breaking the mold of what success looks like in traditional, Asian-American families.

As David also pointed out, "In this show, every person is seen at some point and that’s also a beautiful part of it. That’s why at the end of the show, we bow in a straight line."

Hollywood is making changes too, bringing more diversity to the screens. We’ve all lived to see movies and shows like "Everything Everywhere All At Once" win an Oscar for best picture or "Beef," which has continued climbing up the Netflix rankings, something Kendyl said "changed everything for all of us."

"We see all these streaming sites making all these shows and some of them get canceled after a season. But I think that that is actually the remedy, where if we give a lot of people a lot of different backgrounds the opportunity to tell a story and tell it the way they want to tell it. And let the people decide what they want to consume," said David.

In response, Kendyl admitted, "I think that’s getting me out of this victim mindset like, ‘Oh Asians don’t get repped enough.’ They do now."

The most important people are showing their support too, traveling from near and far to watch their children hone their craft. Like Reanne’s family, who witnessed just how passionate she is about performance.

"They came all the way from Germany to see me as Eliza and it makes me so emotional because I finally got to show them. And just having them in the audience and loving it and telling me that they’re proud of me, which I don’t get that a lot," said Reanne.

In Asian cultures, being affectionate can be uncomfortable. That’s why we show love in different ways, by showing up for each other. As David explained, "Most of the time it’s like ‘I’m here. Like my time, my energy, my attention is currency and I’m giving it to you.’"

It’s not that affection isn’t shown in Asian families. Sometimes it is   shown but indirectly. Reanne gave a perfect example, "Of course they didn’t tell me this until after they were on the plane like ‘I don’t want to say it to her in person’ but my dad was like, ‘Your mom and I are so proud of your accomplishments and we’re so proud and excited for what’s to come for you.’"

AAPI representation in 'Hamilton' [extended cut]

The cast of "Hamilton" opens up about AAPI representation in the arts. Here's an extended interview with the cast of the popular musical.

Most Asian parents today don’t realize how big of an impact face-to-face communication has. David backed that up by adding, "Things like saying, ‘I’m proud of you’ in person. It matters in person and not in text. I mean, it’s impactful regardless, but things like that, they don’t really understand because that’s not how they grew up."

Direct or indirect, that support can make all the difference for these actors living life on the road. "Touring is a hard gig. We don’t have a lot of things that I don’t want to say people take for granted but are automatic ways to recharge your mind, body spirit," said David.

With that, Reanne emphasized the importance of taking care of yourself by doing things on your own time, "I think it’s very important to be able to anchor in something that’s outside of ‘Hamilton,’ outside of work because so much of our energy and time goes into this job that when we do have a moment of respite, we need it to recharge and rest."

For now, this trio will continue being their authentic selves while entertaining audiences across the country and inspiring the next generation along the way.

"This Korean-American family came up to David and had a little boy who was like, ‘he wants to do what you want to do,’" Kendyl shared. On that note, David thought, "If someone also saw that but translated it to ‘If he can do that, maybe I can do this thing I didn’t think I could do before,’ it can be so much more than acting and being a representative of that."

The trio also had some advice that could go a long way for younger, aspiring actors.

"I want to tell little youngins that you can just prove yourself wrong, that you have nothing to prove to other people and we are truly our own worst enemies," Kendyl said.

David said, "Just live your life and pursue things that make you happy. Pursue your passions genuinely, earnestly and I think from there like whatever you want to do, like you can do it."

And Reanne reiterated, "Have other things that bring you joy and fulfillment that’s outside of this industry. You don’t have to rely on the industry to make you a person to give you validation, to make you worthy."

That all comes with a final message from the trio: "You are worthy, you are worthy. Period. And if acting is what brings you joy, do it. Don’t let anyone tell you not to."
