Edinburgh Helicopter Tours

Any company offering Edinburgh helicopter tours will specialise in creating a unique and unforgettable experience for their customers and showcase the beautiful landscapes of Scotland.

Generally, the point of departure will be Edinburgh Airport, where there is a dedicated helipad, and they may offer a variety of tours such as City tour, Coast and Castle tour, Golfers tour, and many more. Each tour typically lasts around 20-30 minutes, but longer tours are also available.

The helicopters will be one of those that are well-suited for sightseeing and touring, such as the single-engine Robinson R22 or R44, or a Eurocopter AS 350 , or a JetRanger. These aircraft are safe, reliable and comfortable, and they can accommodate between 3 to 6 passengers.

It’s worth noting that availability and prices for the tour might vary depending on the season, the tour chosen and the weather conditions. It’s recommended to check their website or contact the company directly for the most up-to-date information on prices, availability, and tour itinerary.

Where is Edinburgh Airport and how can I reach it by road or public transport?

Edinburgh Airport (IATA code: EDI) is located approximately 8 miles west of the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It’s easily accessible by road or public transport.

By Road: Edinburgh airport is connected to the city centre and other areas of the city by the A8 and M8 motorways. The airport has multiple car parks available for short-term and long-term parking. Additionally, there is also a shuttle bus service for customers who park off-site.

By Public Transport: There is a regular bus service (Airport Express 100) operated by Lothian Buses which departs from St Andrew Square in the city centre and runs to the airport every 10-15 minutes . Additionally, the tram service from the city centre to the airport also runs frequently. Edinburgh Trams connect the airport to Edinburgh city centre in around 30 minutes and stop at various points along the way.

Taxi and ride-hailing services like Uber, or other ride-sharing services, are also available for transportation to and from the airport.

Cumbernauld Airport

Your Edinburgh helicopter flight may also start at this aerodrome.

Cumbernauld Airport, also known as Cumbernauld Aerodrome, is a small general aviation airport located in Cumbernauld, about 16 miles east of Glasgow.  It serves the local community with a variety of aviation services such as flight training, helicopter charter, aircraft maintenance and repair, and has a small number of private aircraft based there.

The airport has a single asphalt runway, which is around 1000 metres long, and it is equipped with basic facilities like Fuel facilities, lighting system, and some hangars. It is also used by emergency services and local businesses that require air transportation.

What to wear

While the interior of a helicopter is comfortable, you will be crossing an airfield apron to reach it so it’s worth dressing for the weather outside.   Here are some general guidelines for what to wear during each season:

Spring : During a Scottish spring, the weather can be unpredictable, with a mix of cool and warm temperatures. It’s a good idea to wear layers, such as a lightweight sweater or long-sleeved shirt, a light jacket, and a scarf or light scarf, so that you can easily adjust to the changing temperatures.

Summer : During the summer, it can be quite warm (but it’s not guaranteed), especially inside the helicopter, where the air conditioning might not be very strong. It’s best to wear lightweight, breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and a light hat or sunglasses. Keep in mind that the temperature could be much cooler at altitude, and a light jacket or sweater is recommended.

Autumn : In autumn, the weather can be cool and crisp, so it’s best to wear layers, such as a sweater or long-sleeved shirt, a jacket or fleece, and a hat or scarf, to keep warm.

Winter : Scottish winters can be quite cold, so it’s important to dress warmly, in layers. Wear warm clothes such as thermal pants, sweater, and jacket, with a thick scarf and gloves. It’s also important to wear a warm hat or earmuffs to protect your head and ears from the cold.

Overall, I suggest wearing clothes that are comfortable, easy to move in, and nonrestrictive, as well as closed-toe shoes. Also, always keep in mind that, even in the summer, it is much colder at altitude and the temperature inside the helicopter might be lower than the one outside.

How long does an 18 or 25 mile helicopter ride take?

The duration of an 18-mile helicopter ride can vary depending on several factors such as the type of helicopter, the speed of the aircraft, and the weather conditions.

In general, most helicopters can travel at a speed of around 110 to 130 miles per hour (around 180-210 km/h). However, when it comes to sightseeing and touring, the speed will be slower to allow time for passengers to take in the sights and take photos. Also, due to safety reasons, the helicopter might fly at a lower altitude, and a bit slower, to avoid turbulence and ensure a smooth flight.

Based on those general assumptions, an 18-mile (about 30 kilometres) helicopter ride would typically take around 10 to 15 minutes, but again it could vary depending on specific factors. It’s best to check with the tour operator for the most accurate information about the duration of the tour you’re interested in.

Likewise, the duration of a 25-mile helicopter ride will depend on the same variables. A 25-mile (around 40 kilometres) helicopter ride would typically take around 15 to 20 minutes.

Is a short helicopter ride worth the expense?

Is a round of golf worth the expense?  A SCUBA dive?  Whether or not a short helicopter ride is worth the expense is a subjective matter and can vary depending on the individual and their personal preferences. However, here are some factors that might help you make your decision:

  • Scenery: Taking a helicopter ride allows you to see the sights and landscapes of a region in a unique and breathtaking way that is not possible from the ground. For many people, the experience of flying over stunning natural or urban landscapes is well worth the expense.
  • Convenience: Depending on the location, a helicopter ride can be a faster and more convenient way to travel compared to other forms of transportation. It can allow you to cover a lot of ground quickly, which is particularly useful for people with limited time or mobility.
  • Safety: Helicopters are considered to be safe aircrafts, and modern helicopters are equipped with many advanced safety systems.
  • Flexibility: Many helicopter tour operators offer flexible flight times and pick-up/drop-off options. Which can be more convenient for you, than sticking to a scheduled transport option.
  • Memorable Experience: A helicopter ride can be a memorable and exciting experience, many people find the sensation of flying in a helicopter to be thrilling, and they enjoy the views and the unique experience of being up in the air.

You should also consider if you have any other expenses that you have to cover and if this is something you can afford. You may also want to do a comparison of prices from different operators, as although prices don’t vary much, the extras they lay on may be different.

Embarking on a helicopter ride over Edinburgh, Scotland’s storied capital, is to weave through centuries of history, architecture, and unparalleled natural beauty from an extraordinary vantage point. This city, with its dramatic setting across rocky hills overlooking the sea, presents a tapestry of old and new—a blend that captivates from the skies as much as it does from the cobbled streets below.

As the helicopter lifts off and Edinburgh unfolds beneath you, the city’s iconic skyline comes into view, dominated by the imposing Edinburgh Castle . Perched atop an ancient volcano, the castle is a sentinel watching over the city, its walls and towers narrating Scotland’s tumultuous history. From this aerial perspective, the strategic importance of its location, commanding views over land and sea, becomes strikingly clear, offering a glimpse into the past when kings and queens roamed its halls.

Beyond the castle, the historic Royal Mile stretches down the spine of the Old Town, leading towards the Palace of Holyroodhouse , the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. This ancient thoroughfare, lined with medieval tenements and historic landmarks, tells the story of Edinburgh’s past, each stone and spire a chapter in the city’s narrative. Viewing the Royal Mile from above provides a unique appreciation for its layout, designed to fit the narrow ridge leading down from the castle, showcasing the city’s adaptation to its rugged landscape.

The helicopter ride also offers panoramic views of the New Town, a masterpiece of urban planning and a testament to the city’s Enlightenment era. The geometric precision of its streets, elegant Georgian townhouses, and lush gardens contrast with the organic sprawl of the Old Town, illustrating Edinburgh’s architectural evolution. From the air, the harmony between the Old and New Towns, separated by the verdant Princes Street Gardens , is a beautiful testament to the city’s ability to balance its heritage with progress.

Helicopter Tour over Edinburgh in Scotland

Beyond the city’s architectural wonders, the helicopter tour reveals the natural beauty that surrounds Edinburgh. The extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat rises from Holyrood Park, a rugged reminder of the city’s ancient geological past. The view from above captures the majesty of this natural landmark, offering a moment of reflection on the forces that shaped this landscape millions of years ago.

The flight might also take passengers over the Firth of Forth , where the impressive engineering of the Forth Bridges can be admired. The three bridges, each from a different century, span the estuary with grace and might, connecting Edinburgh with the Kingdom of Fife. The contrast between the Victorian Forth Bridge, the 20th-century Forth Road Bridge, and the modern Queensferry Crossing is a visual narrative of Scotland’s engineering prowess and its embrace of the future.

Moreover, a helicopter ride over Edinburgh allows for an appreciation of the city’s setting within the Lothians, bordered by the rolling Pentland Hills to the south and the tranquil waters of the Firth of Forth to the north. This juxtaposition of city and nature, of historical depth and the breath of the landscape, highlights the unique character of Edinburgh.

In conclusion, taking to the skies for a helicopter tour over Edinburgh is an unforgettable experience that melds the thrill of flight with a profound connection to Scotland’s capital. It offers not just breathtaking views but also a deeper understanding and appreciation for the city’s rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether it’s the ancient majesty of Edinburgh Castle, the elegant geometry of the New Town, the wild beauty of Arthur’s Seat, or the engineering marvel of the Forth Bridges, the city reveals its secrets to those who venture above, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who see it from this remarkable perspective.

  • phoebek279 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Avoid staverton AVOID! We bought the voucher through BuyAGift, but the experience is through Adventure 011. We visited Gloucestershire Airport (Staverton) to watch a family member go on a 12 mile Helicopter ride. He thoroughly enjoyed the ride, however it was the lack of communication and thereafter lack of professionalism that tainted the whole experience. We arrived ready in time for the flight, scheduled to depart at 11. We waited and waited, no-one explained the situation that they were going to be late or why this was the case, or even apologised for the inconvenience. One of our party then decided to ask when they would be departing, and the response was "it does say in the small print, that departure could be within one hour of the original departure time." OK, that's fine, but could someone have just mentioned that to us? Even so, the flight did not depart til 12:10 and then got back in at roughly 12:20! So not within the hour! The worst part about this is when feedback was left, a man from Adventure 001 rang up to discuss the feedback. They disputed that because we entered the weight of the passenger as 12 stone (we didn't have scales so had to take an educated guess) and when he was weighed on site, he was actually 12 stone 9lbs, that this sent the staff into a "quandary!" and they had to juggle things around then (this was the man's words). Again, could they have spoken to the passenger regarding this so that we were aware that things were having to be "juggled around" - again, poor communication and poor excuse. Secondly, the man on the phone tried to argue that the flight departed at 11:46, saying that their records are correct! Well, look at the timestamp of the photos we took as our family member is waiting to board the helicopter (12:08) and then what time he arrives back (12:20.) I think you will find that YOUR records are inaccurate, and if 11:46 was the flight time he was supposed to be on, then why wasn't he? The man on the phone was rude about this, accusing us of being wrong when in fact we were completely in the right. The man was unnecessarily rude, asking questions like "were you actually there?" and trying to make us out as liars, trying to say that one of our party "disturbed briefing" to ask when the flight was departing, even though the member of our family that was out there said they were not even briefing, just stood there ready to go! We hung up the phone in the end, as we were not being listened to at all, he was trying to argue with false information and poor excuses. As I said, the helicopter flight was enjoyed, however we would not use Staverton airport again, purely due to the complete lack of communication from staff throughout, then the absolute disrespect from the person on the phone. It seems they only want good feedback, not the truth and constructive criticism so that they can improve! We didn't want anything back from the company, it was just the principal of being kept late for so long and with no explanation why, and for them to acknowledge that they need to do better. I mean, just look at the other recent reviews; it all speaks for itself. Read more Written April 23, 2024

Tried to speak to groundcrew but sh ran away and got in the helicopter which then flew off. Shocking experience all round. Feel like we have been conned. Read more Written April 6, 2024
  • Terri R 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Short & sweet Our friends bought my husband a voucher for his 50th birthday. 10mile walk, then a 6minute helicopter flight followed by afternoon tea. By the time we went to book there was no dates available within our voucher expiry date. So paid extra to extend the voucher for a further 12months. Then found I could have done it without paying. I then doubled our flight to a 12 minute package & booked my husband to have the front seat! More money! We didn’t do the walk due to having no childcare for our disabled son. Check in was easy. Staff knowledgeable. Boarded the flight, so excited for our 12minute flight. It was getting close to staff lunch time & low on fuel so we got a 6 minutes (being generous) flight! Very disappointed we boarded at 12.57 and I was sat back in the car by 13.06 definitely not 12 minutes flight! As that included picking up our photos after & paying for them Definitely not worth the amount of money we ended up spending. Plus we got no afternoon tea just a box of milk tray and 2 small bottles of bubbly Read more Written April 6, 2024

  • awayoverthere 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Wowcher problems Like a few other reviewers, I have had major issues and in the end, I paid for a voucher that I was told is invalid and is non refundable. I bought a voucher via wowcher. Due to the weather & winter months, the flight was postponed a few times. It was eventually booked for May 2024 until I received an email from Adventure 001 to say they've fell out with wowcher and were cancelling all vouchers. I also received a phone call and I was told that Adventure 001 were owed "10s and 10s of thousands of pounds from wowcher". This may or may not be the case, I have no idea. But what did happen, is I paid for a voucher, booked a flight which was cancelled. There is no way any customer should suffer or lose money due to a dispute between 2 companies - it's unprofessional. When trying to book, I often found that I was having to book months in advance. When that was cancelled, I was having to book several months in advance again. So prior to the cancellation, close to 2 years had passed after buying the voucher and the flight date - that's not normal with other helicopter companies I have used. In the end, I will get my cash back but the overall experience with Adventure 001 (regardless of whether it's their fault of wowchers fault) has been absolutely terrible and I could not recommend this company to anyone. Conversely, I'd say avoid at all costs. Read more Written March 19, 2024

On 1st December it was minus conditions I didnt expect the event to go ahead. Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two private jets on crime prevention tour

Live Moment Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two private jets on crime prevention tour

Premier Steven Miles and Commissioner Steve Gollschewski

Queensland's premier has faced questions over his use of government-chartered jets, as he announced plans to bolster police numbers and give Cairns a dedicated chopper.

Premier Steven Miles said he believed the use of two private jets to travel across regional Queensland this week to make crime prevention announcements was appropriate.

Mr Miles, Police Minister Mark Ryan and newly minted Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski have travelled to several regional cities a day this week, including Cairns, Townsville and Hervey Bay.

A police helicopter in hangar.

To transport the travelling parties — which also included local MPs — two government-chartered jets were used on multiple days to travel between Brisbane and north Queensland.

Steven Miles said the planes were needed for the busy schedule.

"It was determined that was the most appropriate way to deliver the itinerary," he said.

"It just would not be possible for me to have done that without access to those QG Air planes."

Mr Miles said he used commercial flights for travel when possible.

"That itinerary was based on my desire to make sure that I, the police commissioner, and police minster are in regional Queensland as much as we can possibly be," he said.

Live Moment

Look back at how ABC readers and other Australians responded to this live moment.

How can a Polair helicopter assist police?

  • Police say Polair capabilities can enhance police operations in regional areas
  • Polair helicopters have advanced camera, thermal imaging and night vision capabilities
  • The helicopters are used daily to help police with tracking offenders, surveillance operations and search and rescue missions

That is where we will leave our live coverage. Thank you for joining us.

If crime rates are going down in Cairns why is a police helicopter needed?

Police Minister Mark Ryan says in the financial year to date, which is about nine months, the number of offences against properties in Cairns is down 12 per cent   and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle is down 20 per cent.

He says the new helicopter will be there to complement the work that police do.

"Polair is not just about apprehending offenders, it is about saving lives. "The very first call for service the Townsville helicopter was called to was a little boy lost in the bush. "Police tell me that they may not have found that boy if it was not for the helicopter. "That is why you need Polair."

MP says a police helicopter is a 'game changer' for Cairns

"If you are a crook out there you will now be observed from a very high altitude, you won't even know that the machine is even up there, but it will see you," Barron River MP Craig Crawford says. "It can lock on to the vehicle that you have stolen, it can see your heat signature when you are running through the park in the middle of the night. "You will be caught, you will be found, you will be charged and you will go in front of a magistrate."

Wondering what this is? Join us next time we're live and be part of the discussion.

On Monday, Mr Miles travelled from Brisbane to Cairns to hold a press conference alongside Mr Gollschewski after he was announced as the new police commissioner.

Mr Miles spoke in Cairns again on Tuesday, before he travelled to Townsville then Hervey Bay to make announcements about tackling youth crime with Mr Ryan and Mr Gollschewski.

The trio went from Brisbane to Cairns and Townsville again on Wednesday to spruik a new police helicopter and funding for more police officers.

Deputy Opposition Leader Jarrod Bleijie said the premier was   "wasting valuable resources with two luxury jets flying to the same location".

"The same five locations with his police minister," he said.

"They couldn't fly in the same plane together?"

Official guidelines state government jets should only be used when commercial flights are unavailable or inadequate.

'Aggressive recruitment campaign'

The dedicated police helicopter will be used to combat crime, as the state government announces plans to bolster the force with 900 new officers.

The ambitious recruitment target comes ahead of the looming state election and two days after Steve Gollschewski was appointed as police commissioner.

The commitment includes a boost of 500 sworn officers and 400 unsworn personnel over the next three years.

Despite a competitive labour market, the state government said an "aggressive recruiting campaign" had led to a 200 per cent jump in the number of recruits in the pipeline over the last year.

A group of police recruits, many of them women, standing around their trainer.

Nearly 700 aspiring officers are undergoing training and more than 2,000 applicants are in the recruitment process.

"The extra personnel will be allocated to areas across Queensland, ensuring we are future-proofing our police and keeping pace with population growth," Commissioner Gollschewski said.

"Despite the recruiting challenges being experienced in policing jurisdictions across Australia, the QPS is continuing to see a healthy pipeline of police recruit applicants."

New police chopper

With crime shaping up as a key issue in this year's state election, the Queensland government has also committed to purchasing a police helicopter for Cairns.

The aerial asset will include sophisticated thermal imaging cameras and night vision capabilities.

Townsville received a police chopper in January, which is flown daily to track offenders and stolen cars, conduct surveillance operations and search for missing people.

So far, it has taken 110 flights and located 74 persons of interest and 41 stolen vehicles.

"We heard yesterday from the police in Townsville that the helicopter there can allow them to do some tasks that might have once taken weeks in just minutes," Premier Steven Miles said.

Commissioner Gollschewski said he was "delighted" that Cairns would be getting its own chopper.

"We've seen how extraordinarily successful these assets are both in south-east Queensland and in Townsville," he said.

"They are a game changer for our police here and they will be a game changer for the community."

The announcements are the latest in a suite of new government initiatives to combat crime.
