Soak up unforgettable views of Skógafoss waterfall, Iceland

At 60 meters (197 feet) tall and 25 meters (82 feet) wide you’ll be instantly impressed by the size of Skógafoss. The waterfall is striking year-round. But if you’re here on a day when the sun’s shining on the cascade you could see rainbows in the spray – magical!

During your visit, you can hike up to a platform overlooking the falls below. Just make sure to bring your camera – you’ll definitely want to capture the stunning view.

There’s more to this waterfall than meets the eye. This breathtaking curtain of water also features in age-old folklore. According to a Norse legend, Þrasi Þórólfsson – the first Viking in Iceland –  threw a chest of treasure into the river.

It’s said that over the years many people tried and failed to fish the wooden chest out of the waterfall. Until, one day, someone climbed into the cascade. But they could only grasp the handle on the side of the chest. And because the wood was so rotten, the handle broke off and the treasure plummeted to the bottom of the falls, never to be found.

For a while, the ring-shaped handle was on the door of the nearby church, Skógakirkja. Nowadays, if you visit Skógar Museum, you can see the ring the locals claim came from the chest for yourself. The museum is also worth exploring if you’d like to learn more about the culture of the area.

You might also be surprised to learn that the cliffs Skógafoss flows over, were part of Iceland’s coastline during the last Ice Age. Since then, melting ice caused the country’s landmass to rise. This drop in sea level means that you’ll now find the waterfall 5 kilometers (3 miles) inland.

Skógafoss waterfall has been  my all-time favourite waterfall in Iceland since I first visited it as a child with my parents.

Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of some 60 meters and a width of 25 meters. You can walk right up to it but be prepared to be drenched. It is overwhelming standing next to it.

Top photo: a rainbow at Skógafoss

Seeing that the waterfall produces a lot of drizzle you will be able to see beautiful rainbows on sunny days.

The most beautiful rainbows I have ever seen I have seen here by Skógafoss.

Often there are beautiful double rainbows here and once I was encircled by a beautiful rainbow - I stood in a circle of a rainbow!

A rainbow by Skógafoss

It was impossible to take a photo of it, but my husband tried his best to take all kinds of photos of me with the rainbow.

In one photo I look like I am the gold at the end of the rainbow as the end of the rainbow seems to be coming out of my ear :)

Steps lead up to an observation platform above Skógafoss, i.e. if one is up for it, as there are some 527 steps, depending on where you start.

I once climbed these steps on a very cold and extremely windy November day , which left me almost flying in the air!

But it is well worth climbing up all these steps to see Skógafoss from above and the beautiful view from up there.

Skógafoss is only one of the waterfalls in Skógá river, there are 30+ other waterfalls in this river above Skógafoss, some of which I will hopefully be exploring next summer!

If you do this hike may I ask you to report back to me with the number of waterfalls in the river, as I have heard several numbers, ranging from 22-37!

A short video I took of Skógafoss on a sunny day in 2023

In 2010 Eyjafjallajökull glacier started erupting and blew millions of tons of ash into the atmosphere. Skógafoss went grey, and everything was covered in ash.

It was so sad seeing my favourite waterfall in such a condition.

When you start seeing the waterfall from the ring road, it looks like a painting; ever so beautiful and majestic!

It is especially beautiful when the water is still and I have seen some spectacular photos taken from this angle.

The Legend of the Treasure Chest in Skógafoss

Skógafoss waterfall up close

A legend is connected to Skógafoss waterfall; it is believed that behind it you can find a chest filled with gold and treasures. The story goes that  Þrasi Þórólfsson , the Viking Settler at Skógar (Eystriskógar) in around 900,   hid the chest and it is said that the first man who goes there will find great treasures.

I found this folklore in Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - the Collection of Folklore of Jón Árnason :

"Þrasi lived in Eystriskógar, some people say at Þrasastaðir farm, a short distance east of Skógafoss waterfall; Skógar is now the easternmost farm in Rangarávallasýslu county.

Skógafoss waterfall South-Iceland

Skógafoss waterfall

At that time Loðmundur lived in Sólheimar, the next farm east of Sólheimasandur sands, and thus they were neighbours. Þrasi and Loðmundur were both very skilled in magical arts.

A river ran through their lands, called Fúlilækur, and then Jökulsár glacial river in Sólheimasandur plains.

Landnáma states that both of them distributed this river to the other's land as neither of them wanted to have this smelly river close.

This resulted in the sand, called Sólheimasandur plains , being void of grass - and one can still see many runways in the sand where the river has run at each given time.

The spectacular Skógafoss Waterfall in South-Iceland and the Legend of the Treasure Chest

Finally, the neighbours realized that they were creating a desolate wasteland.

On the east side of Jökulsá glacial river, there is a hill in Sólheimaheiði heath leading from the mountain alongside the river - it is called Loðmundarsæti, but opposite on the west side of the river in the lower part of Mt. Skógafjall there is a place called Þrasaháls hill.

The river runs in gorges between these two hills and onto the sand plains.

Map from Landmælingar Íslands - the National Land Survey of Iceland

Map from Landmælingar Íslands - the National Land Survey of Iceland

It is said that in this location Þrasi and Loðmundur stayed while they were quarreling and both Landnáma and the folklore state that they made peace by the gorges and decided on making the river fall onto the sand plains by the shortest distance to the sea.

But it seems like there is always a whirl in this river and that one wave seeks upstream, while the other falls downwards, and the story goes that this unnaturalness of the river stems from the fight between Þrasi and Loðmundur.

Skógafoss waterfall

How many trolls do you spot in this photo? :)

The story goes that Þrasi, who owned a chest filled with gold and treasures, had put the chest beneath Skógafoss waterfall, and in olden times one could see one side of the chest protruding from the waterfall.

There is an old rhyme, which goes like this in Icelandic:

" Þrasakista auðug er

undir fossi Skóga,

hver sem þangað fyrstur fer

finnur auðlegð nóga."

In English, it goes something like this:

" The chest of Þrasi is filled with treasures

located beneath Skógafoss waterfall,

the first man who goes there

will find great richness. "

The chest ring is on display at Skógasafn Museum

The story goes that there were once three men at Skógar, the sons of Ámundi Þormóðsson (" lögréttumaður " 1639-1671 or longer). They wanted to retrieve the chest from beneath the waterfall.

All of a sudden they looked in the direction of the farm, and it appeared to be on fire - they decided to return back, only to find that there was no danger apparent on the farm.

The spectacular Skógafoss Waterfall in South-Iceland and the Legend of the Treasure Chest

Later on, they decided to go again to the waterfall to retrieve the chest and were not misled by some delusions.

They managed to get quite close to the chest and were able to hook a ring on the side of the chest.

But as they were about to pull the chest towards them they jerked the ring from the chest, and the chest got left behind. The story goes that the ring is now located in the church door at Skógar".

(Translated into English from Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - the Collection of Folklore of Jón Árnason).

The chest ring from the chest is now on display at the Skógar Museum . Skógakirkja church was deconsecrated in 1890, and the current Skógakirkja church (photo above) belongs to the Skógar Museum.

I have read that when the church at Skógar was deconsecrated this beautiful chest-ring was used in the church at Eyvindarhólar in the vicinity of Skógar. That church was pulled down in 1960, and a new church was built.

I visited that church on the same day that I stayed at Hotel Skógar , and it is a beautiful modern church. The chest-ring was then donated to the Skógar Museum and is there on display.

There is a wonderful legend in which the first Viking settler in this area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure chest filled with gold behind Skógafoss. It is said a local boy found the chest some years later.

It was possible for him to take hold of the ring on the side of the treasure chest before it vanished once again.  Allegedly, he retained the ring which was given to a local church. Nowadays there is a ring, reputed to be from the chest, in a local museum!

So legend has it that a treasure chest of gold is still waiting to be found behind the waterfall. This makes Skógafoss truly a golden treasure of Icelandic nature just waiting for you to discover it!

The second folklore having to do with Skógafoss is about a troll. Trolls, elves and other hidden creatures are common in Icelandic folklore. So it might not come as much of a surprise that one of Iceland’s best waterfalls has a troll story.

The story has not been recorded very well but goes a little something like this: a gigantic troll was walking around the South Coast carrying a smaller troll on its shoulders. It stumbled upon a big and beautiful waterfall, Skógafoss.

Skogafoss Waterfall drone view from above

The troll was so amazed by the waterfall that it stared at it until the sun came up and they both turned into stone. The trolls now rest in the hills of the waterfall staring at it for all eternity.

The trolls can easily be spotted by hiking up the east side of the mountain. Halfway up, take a left turn and walk onto the leap – you’ll see it there!

Skógura is  a forest in  Icelandic and Foss means  waterfall .

In the Icelandic language, we change each and every word a million ways when using it. This is a bit like the ‘s used in English. Skóga is one of the ways to change the word Skógar and fits better when put together with the word “foss.”

Skógafoss, therefore, translates to Forest Waterfall. This might be a bit hard to believe, but Iceland was actually 25% covered by trees when the settlers arrived in the eighteen hundreds.

Skógafoss

  • What to see
  • South Iceland

Located near the south coast of the country, Skógafoss is considered one of Iceland's biggest and most beautiful waterfalls  and a must-see attraction . Find out how to visit!

At the end of the  Skógá River  near Iceland's southern coast is  Skógafoss , one of the country's  most famous waterfalls . Cascading 200 feet (60 meters) over dramatic black rock cliffs and contrasting spectacularly against the emerald green landscapes surrounding it, it's considered to be the "perfect waterfall". It's equally stunning in winter when the snow covers the falls in a sparkling white mantle .

Skógafoss can be admired both from below, where the curtain of water forms a  rainbow on sunny days , and from above. Those brave enough to climb the more than 400 steps can enjoy unparalleled views of the southern coast of Iceland  from a metal balcony at the top, and watch how the water falls furiously and endlessly over the rocks.

If you plan on visiting Skógafoss in winter, we recommend bringing crampons to enjoy the experience comfortably.

The legend of Skógafoss

A mysterious legend amongst locals in southern Iceland tells that behind the huge curtain of water at Skógafoss lies a precious treasure . According to the tale, it was hidden behind the waterfall many centuries ago by the Viking Þrasi Þórólfsson.

Skógafoss in Vikings

Among the many films and series shot in Iceland , Vikings are one of the most prominent. Alongside other impressive places on the island such as Reynisdrangar, and the black beach at Vík , Skógafoss is one of the most recognizable locations in the History Channel series.

Just like with the tourists who visit it,  Skógafoss leaves Floki , one of the most charismatic characters in Vikings, completely speechless .

How to get to Skógafoss?

The waterfall is located in the south of Iceland, just two hours drive from Reykjavik , so there are several ways to get there.

The easiest and most comfortable way to visit Skógafoss is to book an organized tour along the south coast of Iceland, stopping at places like Seljalandsfoss  and Vatnajökull Glacier as well. Take a look at our  South Coast Tour: Glaciers and Waterfalls and book online in advance.

Another way to go to Skógafoss is to  rent a car  and drive along the Ring Road to the village of Skógar, where you can see signs of the waterfall of Skógafoss.

The last way to get to Skógafoss from Reykjavik is by bus , this, however, is the least convenient option, as it involves a number of bus changes and the journey can take up to five hours.

Skogafoss Waterfall

Basic information.

Skógafoss is a breathtaking waterfall located in the southern part of Iceland. It is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its powerful flow and stunning natural beauty. The waterfall is 60 meters (197 feet) tall and 25 meters (82 feet) wide and drops from a height of 60 meters (197 feet) into a deep pool below. The water flows from the Skógá River, which has its source in the nearby Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The mist generated by the waterfall often creates a rainbow, adding to its beauty. Skógafoss is also a popular hiking destination, with a trail that leads to the top of the waterfall, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Visitors can also explore the Skógar museum nearby, which tells the story of the local area and its history. Skógafoss is a must-see destination for any traveler visiting Iceland and it’s a great place to experience the country’s natural beauty.

Skógafoss is the most photographed scene in Iceland. When the sun reflects off the constant spray of the waterfall, it produces a beautiful single or double rainbows. This brings it into one of the most visited location in Iceland, along with the other close by highlight, the stunning Seljalandsfoss Waterfall . Skógafoss translates to “forest waterfall”.

Where It Is Situated and How to Get There

Skogafoss is either the starting or ending of one of the most popular and exciting summertime hiking trails in Iceland, Fimmvörðuháls. Skogafoss waterfall is situated south of Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Þórsmörk Nature Reserve . Along the Skógá river, the waterfall lies in the sea cliffs of the former Icelandic coastline, which has receded by 5 km. Despite this, the cliffs remain intact with a curtain of water magnificently flowing from a height of 60-meters. The unique waterfall is a direct offspring of two glaciers, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull .

  • Fimmvörðuháls Hiking Tour

Easy to reach by road, the waterfall is around 150 km away from the Capital of Iceland, Reykjavik . Making it highly accessible from the main road, it falls only 2 km from the ring road and 500 meters off-road 1. Following the simple route signs navigating to ‘Skógá’ or ‘Skogafoss’, you will be led to the parking area near the foot of the grand Skogafoss.

The Skógafoss Folklore

As legend has it, a Viking named Thrasi hoarded his treasure of gold and jewels in a cave under Skógafoss. There have been many who have attempted to unfold the mystery of the chest of gold and it is so believed that a young man once discovered the hidden treasure. Though he almost succeeded, he tied a rope to the ring-style handle to pull it out of its place of deep burial. Unfortunately, as the story goes, the handle broke off and that was all he got his hands on. The ring is now said to be adorned on the church door at Skógá.

Apart from the legends and stories associated with Skogafoss, the everlasting beauty of the waterfall has gained admiration across the globe, inviting visitors to indulge in its splendor. It has been featured in various movies and has become one of the most popular must-sees on the top of the checklist when visiting Iceland.

Skógafoss, Iceland – Popular for a Reason

Skógafoss waterfall is one of those instantly recognisable landmarks in Iceland that has been used in countless movies and advertisements to showcase the natural beauty of the countryside. Nevertheless, it is striking in person and should not be missed if given the opportunity. Skógafoss is a popular attraction on most tours around the southside of Iceland and it’s easy to find an accessible group tour that includes a stopover there. For those who want to travel on their own, Skógafoss is about two hours away from Reykjavík on a straight drive down Þjóðvegur 1 highway. It is located in Rangárþing eystra, south of Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

The Legendary Skógafoss

Skógafoss is around 60 m high and 25 m wide, making it one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland and while it’s usually viewed from below, there is a trail close by that leads up to the cliffs above that offers impressive views down the cascading water. Legend has it that one of the first Vikings in Iceland buried a treasure behind the waterfall that was later partially recovered and given to a nearby church for savekeeping. Today, a ring from the treasure trove is found in a museum at Skógar , a small village close to Skógafoss. Along the river Skógá, from where Skógafoss falls, are a number of smaller waterfalls that are worth the hike up to enjoy, along with impressive views over the South Coast. Skógar village is a short twenty minute walk from Skógafoss and is a great little place to stop for coffee or a meal and unwind from the thunderous vistas. Although small, the village has a number of accommodation options for those who want to extend their stay, and at least one of them, Hótel Skógafoss offers a nice view directly at the waterfall.

iceland tour skogafoss

Skógafoss and Beyond

Skógafoss is only one of many attractions in this area of the south that includes the Seljavallalaug hot pool and Seljalandsfoss waterfall. It also marks the beginning of the hike up Fimmvörðuháls , a 22 km trail between glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The hike takes about 11-14 hours but because of its great accessibility it’s one of the most popular hikes in the country. Close by is also the iconic Þórsmörk , a breathtaking highland valley with beautiful hiking trails. There’s a reason why some places are used to advertise Iceland and it’s safe to say no one will be disappointed with a visit to Skógafoss and the surrounding area.

Photography at Skogafoss in Iceland

Iceland is a paradise for photographers. Diverse landscapes and vast untouched nature are the best settings for capturing nature at its best. As a serious hobbyist, I want to share my personal experience taking photos of Skogafoss waterfall.

Capturing the Powerful Fall

The waterfall itself is a mesmerizing subject. With its thundering power, immense height, and impressive width, Skogafoss creates a dramatic scene that sparks our creativity as photographers. There are countless possibilities to explore, from experimenting with different angles, compositions, and shutter speeds. Whether capturing the splashing water in a single moment or creating a dreamy, long-exposure shot to freeze its motion, Skogafoss offers wonderful opportunities for artistic expression.

Playing with Light and Mist

The mist generated by Skogafoss adds an ethereal touch to photography. On sunny days, as sunlight filters through the mist, rainbows often appear –  sometimes even double rainbows –  adding a magical element to the images. We can use this interplay of light and mist to create captivating and atmospheric shots.

Exploring Different Perspectives

Skogafoss offers various vantage points for us to explore. From the base of the waterfall, we can capture the immense scale and power of the cascades. Venturing to higher viewpoints, such as hiking to the top where you will find an observing deck, or exploring nearby hills that allow you to showcase the waterfall within its surrounding landscapes, adding depth and context to our shots.

Timing is Key

Besides the technical aspects of photography, Iceland’s ever-changing weather adds a special atmosphere to our work. Taking photos of Skogafoss at different times of the day can give us different results.

During sunrise and sunset, beautiful golden light casts a warm glow on the waterfall and its surroundings, creating magical scenes. On cloudy or misty days, the images have a moody and mysterious feeling. Skogafoss offers us a range of emotions to capture, like a stage for our visual storytelling.

Adapting to Weather and Conditions

Iceland’s unpredictable weather adds a unique aspect to our work as photographers, but it can also impact the performance of our gear if we aren’t prepared. So, it’s essential to be ready for changing weather conditions when capturing photos at Skogafoss waterfall.

Strong winds and the mist from the waterfall can affect equipment, so I highly recommend bringing protective gear such as lens cloths and covers.

Additionally, wearing sturdy footwear and exercising caution on slippery surfaces is crucial for navigating the area safely. And for achieving excellent sharpness in your work, don’t forget to bring a tripod along.

Skogafoss Waterfall Tours

As one of the most popular attractions in South Iceland , many day tours visiting that region will stop at Skogafoss waterfall.

The wonderful South Coast waterfall tour stops at Skogafoss along with other popular sites such as black sand beach and glacer. And if you prefer joining a small group tour for a more personal experience, the premium South Coast tour is highly recommended. In winter, a combination of a South Coast day tour and a Northern Lights Hunt is a fabulous option for you.

If you like to explore Iceland’s south shore to its fullest within a day, I recommend joining the glacier lagoon full-day tour during which you can take a glimpse of Skogafoss as you pass by.

Folklore about Skogafoss Waterfall

According to Icelandic folklore, Skogafoss waterfall holds a captivating tale of hidden treasure once belonging to þrasi þórólfsson. It is believed that the Viking settler buried a chest filled with valuable treasures behind the cascading water. Over the centuries, many have attempted to claim the treasure, but none have succeeded.

The most famous account tells of a local farmer who managed to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it vanished, leaving only the ring behind. The ring was later entrusted to the Skogafoss Folk Museum, where it serves as a reminder of the mysterious folklore surrounding this enchanting waterfall.

#1 You Can Drive From Reykjavik To Skogafoss In Under Two Hours

Believe it or not, Skogafoss Waterfall is actually closer to Reykjavik than you might think! Many people choose to visit Gullfoss Waterfall along Iceland’s Golden Circle but it takes only about 20-30 minutes more to visit Skogafoss Waterfall on Iceland’s south coast!

The drive from Reykjavik to Skogafoss Iceland is 97 miles long and takes about 1 hour and 54 minutes depending on weather conditions and how many stops you make along the way. The drive to Skogafoss Waterfall is easy and direct as you will be on Iceland’s Ring Road heading east the entire time!

You can see Skogafoss from the Ring Road and most GPS’s recognize the location so it is quite easy to navigate and find your way to this waterfall. If you are driving in Iceland , you are going to want to make this one of your stops around the Ring Road!

Skogafoss Iceland makes a great day trip from Reykjavik, or if you are doing an Iceland road trip and have more time, you can stay the night! We recommend spending the night in Vik or Selfoss, depending on which way you are headed and how long you are looking to explore the area surrounding Skogafoss.

#2 You Can Actually Climb To The Top Of Skogafoss Iceland For A Unique View

People either visit Skogafoss Waterfall on one of Iceland’s many tours or on their own self-drive trip around the island. They will walk around the waterfall for a few minutes and get back in the car or bus and depart.

We recommend staying longer so you really have time to soak in all that Skogafoss has to offer. Once you are done marveling at the waterfall from below, head to your right where you will find steep steps/a trail. There are almost 500 steps and the climb is pretty steep.

You can climb these steps to the very top of the waterfall for a unique perspective from above. Compared to the number of people that admire Skogafoss Waterfall from below, not as many choose to venture to the top of the waterfall.

While you are up there, make sure to turn completely around and enjoy the expansive view of the south Iceland coast as you watch the river from the base of Skogafoss Waterfall flow out to meet the ocean.

#3 The Bathrooms At Skogafoss Waterfall Cost Money To Use…..Sometimes

Yep, like many other bathrooms in Iceland, the toilets at Skogafoss cost money to use. The restrooms are located at the entrance to the parking lot on the right-hand side. They are nothing to be proud of and are not the cleanest. Think of them more like a bathroom you might see at a state or national park as far as cleanliness goes, except it is a bathroom that you have to pay for.

One time we went the payment station was working and the next time we visited the payment station was completely and utterly broken so the bathrooms were free.

Unfortunately, when visiting Skogafoss you have probably been driving for quite a while so you will most likely pay these bathrooms a visit. Make sure you have some money on hand in the event it is a true emergency and you really need to use the restroom. The pay box may or may not be active so it will be a surprise when you arrive!

#4. You Can Visit Skogafoss Anytime Of The Year But Be Very Careful When You Visit During Winter

Skogafoss Waterfall is open 24/7/365 so no matter what time of year you visit Iceland , you can pay this famous waterfall a visit! We have actually visited twice when it was snowy ourselves and on one trip the waterfall was green and the next day it was snowed in! When visiting Skogafoss Iceland in Winter , you must be extremely careful.

close up of skogafoss waterfall in iceland surrounded by snow on a cloudy winter day

The combination of the water, snow, and cold coat the rocks at the base of Skogafoss Waterfall with dangerously slippery ice. It is still possible to walk on the ice to reach the base of the waterfall, but you must be aware and be super careful.

When packing for Iceland, especially if you know it will be snowy/icy, make sure to bring crampons or a walking stick to help you navigate the ice. If you didn’t have time to grab these items before you left, tread with care. Many people take spills when visiting Skogafoss and we can attest to just how slippery and unsuspecting the icy rocks and ground can be!

#5 There Are Food And Lodging Options At Skogafoss Iceland, But They Are Very Expensive

Everything in Iceland is expensive. That being said, some things in Iceland are extra expensive and the food and lodging right by Skogafoss Waterfall fall into the second category!

When you turn off the ring road you will go down a road and then will make a left to the Skogafoss parking lot. Off that first road, you turned onto there will be a variety of food and lodging options but be warned that they are on the pricey side so if you are trying to visit Iceland on a budget, it is probably best to skip staying or eating here!

We always suggest heading to one of the grocery stores in Iceland and stocking up on snacks and lunch food which ends up being much cheaper than eating at the most expensive places around like the ones nearby Skogafoss Waterfall. As mentioned above, if you are looking for somewhere more affordable to stay, try heading to Vik or Selfoss, or even driving back to Reykjavik for the night!

-Dress Appropriately When Visiting Skogafoss Waterfall . No matter what time of year you travel to Skogafoss Waterfall Iceland, you are going to want to wear the proper clothing. We have seen so many people at Skogafoss wearing completely inappropriate clothing.

These people are either cold, wet, or both and certainly complaining about it! Save yourself the trouble by wearing great shoes and a warm coat!

-Visit Skogafoss Early Or Late If You Want To Avoid Crowds. If you are looking to have Skoagfoss Waterfall all to yourself you are going to want to visit first thing in the morning or right around sunset.

We have visited around sunset and have been the only people there! If you are a photographer and are looking to take some awesome shots of Skogafoss, we recommend going early or late! You can even visit Skogafoss Waterfall after dark if you want to get some great astrophotography or watch the Northern Lights dance over the waterfall!

-You Don’t Have To Drive To Visit Skogafoss Waterfall. If you are traveling to Iceland but you don’t want to rent a car, no worries! There are many affordable tours in Iceland that will take you to Iceland’s south coast and all of these tours stop at Skogafoss Waterfall.

-Budget Enough Time To Really Enjoy Skogafoss. Many people visit Skogafoss Waterfall and only stay for 10-15 minutes. This certainly isn’t enough to take in the majesty that this stunning Icelandic waterfall has to offer.

When visiting Skogafoss Waterfall, we highly recommend that you stay for at least an hour if not more! Walk around the river that comes from the base of the falls.

Walk up close to the base of Skogafoss. Climb the stairs to the top of Skogafoss and walk around and enjoy the view. There is so much to see and do and so many ways to enjoy Skogafoss Waterfall Iceland! We highly recommend spending a little longer than just 10-15 minutes at this wonderful stop!

-Leave No Trace When Exploring Skogafoss . While this may sound like a silly thing to include, it must be said! Skogafoss Waterfall is a very popular destination in Iceland and many people visit every day and millions visit per year. Some people have no respect for nature and litter and damage the environment.

Do not throw anything in the water or on the ground that isn’t naturally there. If you smoke, extinguish your cigarettes and throw them in the trash. Do not, under any circumstances, throw cigarette butts on the ground when visiting Skogafoss Waterfall. There are plenty of garbage and recycling bins around so use them and save the beautiful waterfall.

Located in the south of Iceland, spectacular Skogafoss Waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in the country. Here’s a guide to visiting.

Table of Contents

How To Get To Skogafoss Waterfall

Skogafoss Waterfall is located just off Route 1, the well known ring road that circles the country of Iceland , so it’s pretty easy to get to.

If you’re based in the capital city of Reykjavik , one of the best ways to get to Skogafoss Waterfall is to hire a car and drive.

Just follow the Route 1 ring road south from Reykjavik and it will take you all the way to the Waterfall. You can actually see it from the road.

It’s a scenic and straightforward drive that takes just over 2 hours. In addition there is free parking once you arrive that’s just a few minutes walk from the waterfall.

The number 51 bus from Reykjavik will take you half-way to the town of Selfoss. From there you then get the number 52 bus which will take you directly to the falls. This takes a little longer than driving yourself.

Best Time To Visit Skogafoss Waterfall

As one of Iceland’s most popular attractions, Skogafoss Waterfall can get pretty busy, especially during the peak tourist months of June, July and August.

However, the sun only sets for a short time during the summer months in Iceland so, if you want to avoid the crowds, you’ve got plenty of time to visit early/late in the day.

Or, the months either side of the peak season, especially when the children are in school, are also less busy.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind the cold, Skogafoss Waterfall looks pretty magical during the winter months cascading out of its rugged, snow covered surroundings.

Furthermore, although you don’t have as many daylight hours during the winter, there are definitely fewer visitors at this time of year and you might also get to see the famous Northern Lights.

Skogafoss Waterfall History

Skogafoss Waterfall is on the River Skoga which originates from a spring beneath Eyjafjoll mountains. It flows over a large, former sea cliff that once would have sat on Iceland’s coastline.

As the coastline receded the former cliffs remained and now sit approximately 4 km from the shoreline.

Legend has it that the first Viking settler in the area, Prasi Porolfsson, buried a chest full of gold behind Skogafoss Waterfall. With the end of the chest just being visible.

Many years later, locals searching the area are said to have found the chest and tried to retrieve it. They put a rope through the ring on the end of the chest but the ring broke off and the chest fell back into the watery depths.

The large ring from the chest is said to have been given to the local Skogar village church, where it was placed on the door and used as a knocker.

Interestingly, the ring from the Skogar church door is now on display in the local Skogar Museum. Where you can visit and make-up your own mind about the legendary tale!

What To Expect At Skogafoss Waterfall

Skogafoss is a dramatic and impressive waterfall at 25m wide, with a drop of 60m. Cascading over a towering cliff, the water crashes into the basin, producing an abundance of spray.

In fact, due to the amount of spray, when the sun is shining you are very often rewarded with colourful single and even double rainbows. Making for some great photo opportunities.

Following a flat trail you can get up close to Skogafoss Waterfall and enjoy the full force of this natural wonder. I would recommend waterproof clothing if you are going to do this though, as the spray will definitely get you!

Additionally, if you are feeling energetic, there is a steep, narrow staircase of over 400 steps that you can climb up to a viewing platform at the top of the falls.

From here you have scenic views across the surrounding rugged landscape and out over south Iceland’s coastline. This is also the start/finish of the popular Fimmvorduhals Hiking Trail.

The river below Skogafoss falls is home to a large salmon and char population. So you will often see fishermen here if you visit between the months of July to October.

Spectacular Skogafoss Waterfall is a must for your Iceland itinerary. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

If you would prefer a day trip to the south coast that includes a visit to Skogafoss, the From Reykjavik: South of Iceland Full-Day Trip is a good option.

Fun Fact: Skogafoss Waterfall is so dramatic that it has been used in a number of well known films and TV series including Game of Thrones, Thor, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Vikings.

Keep your eyes peeled for rainbows!

Located at the foot of the impressive Eyjafjöll mountain range is Skógafoss, a magnificent 60-metre high waterfall where, according to legend, the first Viking settler in the area hid a treasure in the cave behind the cascade.

This is also one of Iceland‘s most photogenic landmarks; since the waterfall produces a lot of mist, rainbows are a common sight on sunny days. Nearby is the Skógar Folk Museum, which boasts an array of interesting artefacts including an original turf farm that shows how people lived hundreds of years ago.

Skogafoss Waterfall Hike: Iceland’s Most Beautiful Waterfall Trail

WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT THE SKOGAFOSS WATERFALL HIKE? Look no further!

Skogafoss is one of Iceland’s most-loved water features and just one photo shows you exactly why! The waterfall is absolutely huge and so, so beautiful.

Hiking to the top of the waterfall and beyond gives such an incredible feeling and you shouldn’t skip the opportunity if you find yourself in southern Iceland.

This article will give you all you need to know about the wonderful Skogafoss waterfall hike and lots of details about why Skogafoss is a must-see location!

Where is Skogafoss?

Skogafoss is a stunning waterfall situated in the southern part of Iceland.

It is located near the small village of Skogar, which is approximately 150 kilometres east of the capital city, Reykjavik.

The waterfall is one of the country’s most iconic and popular tourist attractions, mainly because of its impressive height of 60 metres and width of 25 metres.

Skogafoss waterfall with tourists admiring it from a far

Skogafoss is part of the Skoga River, which originates from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. The waterfall is fed by water from both the Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers.

The surrounding area is characterized by lush green landscapes and is also home to the Skogar Museum, which offers some great insights into Iceland’s cultural heritage.

Accessible by road, Skogafoss is easily reached and is a must-visit destination for those exploring the breathtaking natural beauty of Iceland.

How to get to Skogafoss?

Skogafoss is very accessible by road so if you’re hiring a car for your visit then you’ll have no bother getting to the site.

You’ll have around a two-hour drive to undertake after setting off from Reykjavik but it’s not too tasking, especially in summer. Follow the ring road eastwards from Reykjavik, and eventually, you will be able to see Skogafoss from the road. Turn left to get to the parking lot, around one kilometre from the main road.

However, if you’re opting to spend your trip to Iceland on tour buses then there is an endless list of tour options which stop at Skogafoss – particularly if you’re taking a South Shore day tour or a Golden Circle one.

Here’s a small list of the best tours that you can take that will stop off at Skogafoss so that you can get some wonderful pictures and views.

My Top 3 Picks: Tours Which Stop at Skogafoss

iceland tour skogafoss

#1 TOP PICK

Girl looks away from the camera towards Skogafoss

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ From Reykjavik: South of Iceland Full-Day Trip ✔️ 10-hour tour from Reykjavik ✔️ Stop at Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss and many other top spots 🚫 Large group size

iceland tour skogafoss

From Reykjavik: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach ✔️ See Skogafoss and many other water-wonders! ✔️ Optional boat cruise on a lagoon 🚫 No hotel pickup or dropoff

iceland tour skogafoss

From Reykjavik: South Coast Tour & DC-3 Plane Wreck ✔️ See several major volcanoes and Skogafoss ✔️ Stop at a cool tourist attraction- the DC-3 Plane Wreck 🚫 Reviews say stop times are short

Can you climb to the top of Skogafoss?

Yes! You can climb to the top of Skogafoss and you should! The stairs to the side of the waterfall take you up over 60 metres to see the waterfall from above and the views are incredible!

How many steps are there to the top of Skogafoss?

Skogafoss waterfall hike consists of 572 steps to the top. You will get some amazing views and so it is well-worth it, but it’s not recommended if you have mobility issues as the steps can be quite steep and slippery in places.

When is the best time to visit Skogafoss?

Skogafoss is incredible all year round and there are perks with every season. Summer and autumn are my favourite seasons to see Skogafoss as there is a lot more water cascading over the cliff, giving a greater impression of the Skogafoss’ power.

The lighting is just perfect with the angle of the sun often giving multiple rainbows to admire to the sides of the waterfall.

Looking on social media, you’d probably be convinced that many people are editing rainbows, but they aren’t! The rainbows at Skogafoss are completely natural and some of the brightest rainbows I’ve ever seen in my life.

Something to bare in mind is that you might want to opt to visit quite early in the morning or late in the afternoon if you have the freedom of your own car as summer and autumn are extremely busy with tourists at the waterfall.

If you want the perfect photo with no people in the background then you’ll need to time it right!

Fimmvorduhals Trail – Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

While a quick visit to Skogafoss can consist of a small hike (climbing to the top), there is a greater hike that you should not miss if you have the time.

Skogafoss can actually be used as a starting or finishing point of the Fimmvorduhals hiking route.

Fimmvorduhals is one of Iceland’s most popular hiking routes with hundreds of travellers completing it each year. It can only be completed in the summer months when there are better conditions and less risk of ice and other hazards.

The Fimmvorduhals hike takes in 26 waterfalls, 1 volcano and 2 glaciers – and is an unforgettable experience. It also gives you a great glimpse of the wildlife of Iceland .

It’s quite incredible that the route takes in so much and is actually quite short at around 25 kilometres long.

Here are the key highlights of the trail, starting at Skogafoss:

Beginning at Skogafoss, you will hike past numerous other waterfalls along the Skoga River, witnessing beautiful cascades and Kvernufoss.

Hikers will then cross volcanic landscapes formed by the infamous Eyjafjallajokull eruption in 2010. The highest point of the hike: Fimmvorduhals Pass, gives stunning panoramic views of glaciers and mountains.

Another highlight is the Magni and Modi Craters which were formed in the eruption. They provide a great insight into how the volcanic eruption went down.

Hikers will then descend down into Thorsmork Valley, heading back into green landscapes and away from the alien-like terrain that was previously ventured through.

The hike is considered moderately challenging but most experienced hikers will be able to complete it in one day. Some travellers decide to split the journey over two days and stop overnight in a lovely, rural hut.

The most challenging aspect of the hike is the elevation gain with over 1000 m covered in a short distance.

Walking the Skogafoss waterfall hike is a fabulous experience that you shouldn’t miss out on if you have during your trip.

If you aren’t travelling around Iceland in your own car, then you can still definitely undertake the Skogafoss waterfall hike.

The experience of hiking the Fimmvorduhals trail is one of the top contenders with the Fagradalsfjall tours or a volcano helicopter tour .

There are several private hiking tours of the Fimmvorduhals route but this one is by far the best value one that I could find and passes all of the most beautiful areas:

Conclusion: Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

Your Guide to Skogafoss Waterfall in Iceland

Skogafoss is known as one of our most impressive waterfalls here on the island and makes for spectacular photos since it’s one of the few falls in Iceland that one can get up close and personal to.

So, if you are coming for a visit to the island soon or just want to learn more about Skogafoss , stick around – we reveal all in this article.

Skogafoss Falls

Skogafoss Falls

Skogafoss Waterfall can be found in the southern part of Iceland , located on the Skoga River, and is one of the waterfalls in Iceland that’s not to be missed. The falls are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

Not only does it boast a staggering drop of 60 meters, but it also plummets down to the black pebble shore below , surrounded by the greenest of vegetation and moss growing on the rocks (the latter is obviously subject to seasonal changes).

And if the falls look familiar to you, it might be because you’ve already caught it on screen with Skogafoss appearing on the popular series, Game of Thrones. The following are some of the questions we’re most frequently asked about Skogafoss Falls:

What’s the Meaning of Skogafoss?

The meaning of Skogafoss might not be what you expect if you haven’t seen the lush greenery surrounding the falls yet. Skogur in Icelandic means ‘forest’, and foss translates to ‘falls’ . Therefore, Skogafoss is a combination of the two, loosely translating to the ‘Forest Waterfall’.

How was Skogafoss Formed?

It’s interesting to note that Skogafoss was never really formed or created. It was always there, just not as noticeable as it is today.

It may seem like a strange notion, but the steep cliffs that showcase the splendor of the Skogafoss Falls today once marked the coastal cliffs of the island . It was due to marine erosion that the coastline had receded into what can be seen today.

Skogafoss formation

The Legend of Skogafoss

Legend goes that an old Viking named Prasi Porolfsson hid a treasure chest with gold and all sorts of other riches behind the Skogafoss Waterfall in the year 900 . As you can imagine, to this day, nobody has taken on the thousands of liters of water plummeting to the ground every second to check whether the legend is actually true (and please don’t try to be the first!).

When is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Skogafoss in Iceland?

Skogafoss is open to the public all year round, but many would suggest rather going during the summer months in Iceland (June to September) since things can get a bit wet at the falls.

If you’re visiting any other time of the year, also keep in mind that January, February, March, September, October, November and December is considered to be the wettest months in the area (from actual rain, not just mist and spray from the falls).

Other than that, it’s still possible to visit Skogafoss in Iceland during winter (if the roads allow). Just be careful at the Skogafoss stairs since they might be a bit icy and slippery.

Skogafoss in summer

What is the Best Time of the Day to Visit Skogafoss in Iceland?

If you are going to be visiting Skogafoss during the summer season, you’ll need to visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak season crowds.

How Much Time Should I Spend at Skogafoss?

Those who are wondering how long to spend at Skogafoss should consider everything there is to do there; you can walk around the river, snap that picture at the base of the falls, and climb the stairs to the top of the falls and admire the breathtaking views. This will all require at least an hour of your time , if not more.

The Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

We highly recommend that you go on the Skogafoss hike when visiting the falls. The Skogafoss Waterfall trail is one of the most picturesque trails you’ll find here on the island. And, no, we are not talking about the stairs leading up to the top of the waterfall. The Waterfall Way Hike is a day trail that starts at Skogafoss and takes you all along the river.

It’s a bit of a challenging route, so keep that in mind if you have very small children or the elderly in your party. But it’s also a quick hike. The 8-kilometer trail won’t take you longer than 2 hours to complete. This hike is well worth getting your hiking boots on.

How to Get to Skogafoss Waterfall

There are essentially three ways for you to get to Skogafoss Waterfall:

Many guided tours have Skogafoss as an attraction. You can either opt for a guided day tour that only visits the falls, or you can opt for one of the multi-day guided tour holiday packages that simply has Skogafoss as part of its itinerary.

It is possible to get to Skogafoss by using the public transport system. You can catch the 51 bus from the capital city of Reykjavik to Selfoss and then get on the 52 bus that will take you directly to the falls. Alternatively, you can get a bus to Vik from Reykjavik and then just walk the rest of the 13 kilometers to the falls.

Getting from Reykjavik to Skogafoss is incredibly easy by car and will take you just 2 hours. Simply get on the Ring Road and start driving east ‘till you see the falls. Alternatively, you can drive from Selfoss to Skogafoss, which will take you roughly an hour and 15 minutes.

As you can see, it’s possible to have Skogafoss as a day outing from one of these cities/towns, but many choose to have the falls as a stop along their Ring Road road trip.

Skogafoss Visit

Skogafoss Waterfall; the Falls You Can Almost Reach Out and Touch

What makes visiting Skogafoss such a special experience is the fact that it’s one of the few falls here in Iceland that you can get really close to without standing on an observation deck or behind railings. This, of course, doesn’t mean that you should take liberties – your safety should always be a priority (in other words, no treasure hunting for you!).

The drive from the capital city to Skogafoss is incredibly scenic, so our recommendation is to rent a car in Iceland and make Skogafoss and a few other nearby attractions stops along your road trip. But whatever you decide to do, do not miss the ‘Forest Waterfall’ whilst on your trip to Iceland.

The Unbelievable Skogafoss Waterfall Hike (up the Beautiful Fimmvorduhals Trail)

' src=

Skogafoss is an incredibly powerful and impressive waterfall on the Southern Coast of Iceland. Cascading off the Southern cliffs of Iceland, Skogafoss is the final waterfall of the impressive Skoga River as it makes its way from the glacier to the ocean. But this is just one of the many incredible waterfalls on the Skoga River, and the Skogafoss Waterfall hike (on the Fimmvorduhals Trail) directly above this waterfall is one of the best hikes in Iceland.

We visited Skogafoss and did the Skogafoss waterfall hike up the Fimmvorduhals Trail for about 6 miles during the summer of 2022. You will also see this trail called the Skógá  Trail  or even more generally Waterfall Way. In this post, you can find details on how to visit this waterfall and all the details on hiking the lower part of the Fimmvorduhals Trail. Since we also researched doing this trail as a point-to-point trail, we will also share some basic information about this option.

Looking for more Iceland travel inspiration, see the best waterfalls in Iceland .

The Base of Skogafoss Waterfall, Iceland

Quick Overview of the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike (the Fimmvorduhals Trail)

The Skogafoss Waterfall Trail, or Waterfall Way starts at the parking lot for Skogafoss and follows the Skoga River towards its source at the inland glaciers. The waterfall is said to pass over 26 waterfalls as it flows to the ocean, and the trail offers stunning views of these unique waterfalls and the valley.

The first site on your visit to the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike is the mighty Skogafoss. Once you find the parking lot, which is directly off Route 1, you can’t miss the waterfall. You can walk on the obvious trail and get right up to the base of the waterfall where the powerful spray will cover you in water. If you’ve brought your rain gear, it’s worth getting up into the spray!

Walking along the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

The Skogafoss Trail begins just to the left of the waterfall – you will simply follow the series of stairs up to the top of the waterfall. From the top of Skogafoss, the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike truly begins and follows the river up the valley. This well-marked and easy walking trail passes waterfall after waterfall with more amazing views around every corner. The entire Fimmvorduhals Trail travels up 25 km and can be done as a long single-day trek. This does involve spotting a car or arranging some type of transportation.

The easiest way to hike the trail is from the bottom as an out and back. This allows you to you can simply turn around whenever you want. Even walking just a mile up the trail will give you incredible views of several waterfalls. The trail meanders up the valley with a mostly gentle rise and you are rewarded with views of amazing waterfalls.

The trail is relatively easy and can be enjoyed by anyone with moderate fitness – it is a great trail to hike with kids.

For more details on the complete hike, scroll down.

How to Get to the Skogafoss Waterfall

Skogafoss is a very easy stop along the Southern Coast, and the large parking lot is just off Route 1. Since the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike and the start of the Fimmvorduhals Trail leaves from right next to Skogafoss, you can use the same parking lot. There was a small fee to park in the lot, and you can also stay nearby or camp. If you scroll to the bottom of this post you can see some suggestions on where to stay.

The View of Skogafoss from the Parking Lot - the Skogafoss Waterfall Trail goes up the right side of the Waterfall

Most People who are doing the Skogafoss Waterfall hike are driving themselves along the Southern Coast or around the ring road, but there are many tours that stop at Skogafoss, although you may only have a short time to visit, so while you will be able to see Skogafoss, you may not get to walk very far up the Trail.

Below are some common driving times for getting to Skogafoss:

  • Reykjavik to Skogafoss: 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • Gullfoss to Skogafoss: 2 hours
  • Reynisfjara Beach to Skogafoss: 30 minutes
  • Seljandsfoss to Skogafoss: 30 minutes

Map of the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

The map below shows the start of the hike and the general walk up the hiking trail. There is not much need of a more detailed hiking map if you are just doing the lower part of the Skogafoss Waterfall Trail, as the trail is obvious and straightforward.

Best way to View Skogafoss

There are 2 excellent viewpoints to see Skogafoss. The first is to walk to the base of the waterfall on the obvious trail that leads right from the parking lot. The second viewpoint is to view Skogafoss from the top. To reach the top, you will walk up the steps just to the side of the waterfall. This is the hardest part of the visit! There is a viewing platform at the top of the falls and from here, the Fimmvorduhals Trail follows the river inland.

If you have the time, we highly recommend walking to the viewpoint above Skogafoss, even if you don’t plan to go further on the trail.

Getting sprayed by the water at the bottom of the Skogafoss Waterfall

Different Options for Hiking the Fimmvorduhals Trail

As mentioned above, the Skogafoss Waterfall Trail includes the lower part of the Fimmvorduhals Trail. The Fimmvorduhals Trail starts in Skoga and ends in Thorsmork. This means if you are planning to hike this trail, you will need to arrange transportation either to or from Thorsmork. The trail 26 km one way and is an incredible if long day hike that passes near dormant volcanos as well as the many waterfalls on the Skoga River. We were planning to do this entire trail but due to the logistics, we ended up doing just the lower section.

If you are looking for more information on hiking the Fimmvorduhals Trail, the Earthtrekkers website has a great overview.

Hiking on the bottom of the Fimmvorduhals Trail

Details of the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike (the lower part of the Fimmvorduhals Trail)

The hardest part of the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike is the hike up the stairs to the top of the Skogafoss Waterfall. If you reach this point, the rest of the hike is straightforward with a gentle incline and no steep or challenging sections. The stairs can get a bit crowded with people who are just here to see Skogafoss, but as you walk further and further up the trail, the crowds begin to thin. When we hiked the trail, we had entire sections of the walk to ourselves.

Beginning the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

In the next section, I will describe some of the main sites you will see along the lower section of this trail, but in actuality, you can simply just walk up the path until you are tired and enjoy waterfall after waterfall. For most of the waterfalls, you will be looking down into the river and as you walk up the trail, you will get viewpoints of both the lower part of each fall and the view of the top of the falls looking down.

Many of the waterfalls are marked, and you can check off the different falls as you hike.

Use common sense and respect the signage and trail markings to avoid contributing to erosion or putting yourself in danger near a big drop. Iceland has a fragile ecosystem and there is trail maintenance underway to make sure the trails remain safe for everyone. You will see many side trails where people have gone off trail to get the best view, but are causing environmental problems.

The Skogafoss Waterfall Hiking Trail above Skogafoss

The immediate trail above Skogafoss provides your first view up the valley and in the other direction you will see the coastline stretching out below you. You will pass many small waterfalls which don’t even get proper names and the valley begins to deepen surrounded by lush hillsides.

The first larger named falls you will see are the High Peaks Waterfall and Cascading Falls. These waterfalls are about a 45-minute walk up the Skogafoss Trail

The Skogafoss Waterfall Hike

Following the trail past Cascading Falls, you will eventually come across some signage within a short walk. When we visited in the summer of 2022 parts of this trail were undergoing maintenance. The hike here becomes increasingly dramatic as the gorge down to the Skoga River deepens and the views become even more breathtaking.

There are some sections of the trail that were quite muddy, even though it hadn’t rained much recently, and I can imagine that the trail would be a good deal muddier after a heavy rain.

iceland tour skogafoss

Since the trail continues on for 26 km, you will want to choose a turnaround point somewhere on the lower half of the hike. One option for a turnaround point is Subtle Falls. Subtle Falls is about a 1.5-hour hike from Skogafoss and just under 6 km.

After Subtle Falls, the next obvious turnaround point is the Bridge. This is about 8 km up the river from Skogafoss. This point is about 2.5 hours from Skogafoss and about an 8 km walk. While it’s fun to try to make it to the bridge, we found this part of the trail the least interesting. It’s still a great hike, but after the amazing lower section, it’s not quite as impressive. Sunset Falls is a beautiful waterfall located near the bridge.

Unless you are hiking the entire Fimmvorduhals Trail, you will likely want to turn around here and begin making your way back down the Skogafoss Waterfall Hike. The walk back will likely take less time as you are on a gradual downhill walk.

iceland tour skogafoss

We walked the Skogafoss Waterfall Trail on our trip around the Ring Road and found it was one of the best coastal hikes in Iceland. We visited late morning after stopping at Seljandsfoss and spent about 5 hours exploring Skogafoss and the Skogafoss Waterfall Trail.

Skógafoss Waterfall – South Iceland

Skógafoss waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland and is among the top 5 largest in the country. Aside from the millions of gallons of glacial melt water cascading over this huge cliff, Skógafoss offers camping and hiking for the adventurous visitor.  It is an impressive curtain of glacier melt water.  The waterfall is fed by two glaciers: Eyjafjallajokull and Mýrdalsjökull, making it a unique waterfall in Iceland.

Skógafoss waterfall is in the Mýrdalsjökull region, between Vík and Hvolsvöllur. It is 20 kilometers from Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Although the waterfall now sits some 5 kilometers back from the sea, it used to fall into the sea. In 2010, the area suffered badly under the ash from the Eyjafjallajökull.

Treasure at Skógafoss Waterfall

One of the first settlers in Iceland, Þrasi Þórólfsson is rumoured to have hidden a treasure chest behind Skógafoss Falls. This is obviously just one of those rumours that was spread to kill stupid travelers. In almost every inaccessible spot in Iceland, there is a story of hidden treasure.

Pro-photographer Sessions

How do i get to skógafoss waterfall.

Skógafoss waterfall is easy to find and highly accessible throughout the year. The waterfall can be viewed easily from the ring road as you drive through South Iceland. It is only 20 kilometers east of Seljalandsfoss waterfall, so if you are heading east from Seljlandsfoss, you will stumble upon Skógafoss waterfall after about 20 minutes of driving.

There are maintained roads that take you closer to the waterfall, with access to hotels, restaurants, and a campsite. The road continues to a gravel car park and gets bumpier as you approach the waterfall. There is a point where no traffic is allowed, and it takes about 2 minutes to walk right up to Skógafoss. In the winter, this land can become very slippery close to the waterfall. I recommend microspikes.

Skogafoss snow scene: Top #Iceland photo locations

Skógafoss Photo Tips

Skógafoss waterfall is amazing to visit all year round, but it works best for photography during the winter because it is south-facing.  The sun hits the full face of the falls after 2 p.m., but the spray from the waterfall can catch the sunlight a few hours earlier. In the summer, the midday light might be too harsh for effective landscape photography.

What Lenses do I need at Skógafoss?

I don’t see much point in having anything wider than 24-mm on a full frame (17-mm on a crop sensor). Although you can get really close to Skógafoss waterfall, the spray becomes too much for a wide-angle lens. All the photos in this post were taken with a 24-mm prime lens.

There are good opportunities to photograph Skógafoss with a telephoto lens. From the car park, you can frame the waterfall tightly with a 200-mm lens. You can do the same from the ring road with a 400-mm lens. There is little need for big telephoto lenses after the car park, so I recommend leaving it in the car after shooting from the car park.

Experiment with shutter speed. Try using a tripod and vary shutter speeds from 1/4 to 1/125. Your success will depend on the amount of available light.

Skógafoss Viewing Platform

There is a set of stairs on the eastern side of the falls that offers great views of the falls to visitors. Although the viewing platform offers a safe view of the falls, it is not the best place for photographers. It is difficult to set up a tripod high enough to avoid the steel bars.

For hikers, this is the start of the Fimmvörðuháls pass, a hiking route between the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier and Eyjafjallajökull Glacier, which leads to Þorsmörk. Both the names ‘Þorsmörk’ and ‘Skógafoss’ suggest forest land.

Can I walk behind Skógafoss waterfall?

You can walk right up to about 10 feet from the Skógafoss waterfall. The river prevents regular tourists from getting even closer. Away from the waterfall, the river is shallow enough to wade in, but underneath the falls, the river is likely to be significantly deeper. Only a foolish person would attempt to get under the waterfall, and their chances of actually going behind it and surviving would be very slim.

Western Iceland is where you can find Snæfellsjökull National Park, home to the beautiful glacier.

Snæfellsjökull was declared a national park in 2001 and is only one of three national parks in the country .

Snæfellsjökull is described in Jules Verne's famous novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

There are several black sand beaches in Iceland that are truly a sight unlike any other.

A GUIDE TO SIGHTSEEING IN ITALY: A ROMAN ADVENTURE AWAITS YOU

One of these is Reynisfjara, a black sand beach good for seeing but not for swimming because of the cold water and strong currents that make it dangerous.

You can also see the sparkle of Diamond Beach while in Iceland. This black sand beach is full of diamond resembling ice, making the water shimmer and shine.

Again, Diamond Beach is another beautiful landmark, but avoid swimming in this water, mainly because of the icebergs that can cause injury.

Vatnajokull glacier is Europe's largest. You can explore the glacier on foot or rent a snowmobile to see more in a short time.

There are so many breathtaking ice caves to explore throughout the glacier.

Vatnajokull may look familiar to you, even if you haven't visited Iceland before, as it was featured in the HBO series "Game of Thrones" and two "James Bond" films.

Vatnajökull National Park is where you can find Skaftafell nature reserve. Skaftafell nature reserve has been a part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2008. Glacier lagoons, black sand and mesmerizing rock formations can all be found here.

EXPLORING THAILAND'S TAPESTRY OF TRADITION, ADVENTURE, TIMELESS BEAUTY

It is just about 45 minutes from Diamond Beach.

Taking a Golden Circle tour is a must-do activity on a trip to Iceland. The Golden Circle is a scenic route where you'll be able to see Iceland in all its beauty.

How much time you carve out for this depends on how long you want to spend at each stop. You can easily spend days exploring this area, or you can rent a car and spend a few hours driving around.

There are three main stops part of the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall.

Reykjavík is filled with bars and restaurants , making the city a great spot for thriving nightlife at the end of a busy day exploring.

While here, you can also visit Hallgrimskirkja Church and stop by one of the many local swimming pools throughout the city.

AUSTRALIA TRAVEL GUIDE: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT THE LAND DOWN UNDER

Skogafoss waterfall is a breathtaking beauty you will not want to miss when traveling to Iceland.

Get your cameras ready for this stop, because you'll want to snap a picture of you in front of the enormous waterfall. It's not a bad idea to pack a pair of waterproof shoes on your visit.

You don't need to carve out too much time for this, 30 to 45 minutes will do. Rainbows are very common here, so keep your eye out for that, too.

While in Iceland, you'll most likely be able to cross "see the northern lights" off your bucket list.

Making a plan to see the colorful lights in the sky is a little tricky, since their occurrence is not super predictable. That said, visiting between September and April, when the nights are long and dark, will give you the best possibility of seeing the aurora borealis.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”
