Professor james tour: a “liar for jesus”.

Renowned scientist James Tour at Rice University is facing the wrath of Internet trolls because of his candid evaluation of origin of life research in a recent public lecture in Dallas . For his frankness, Tour is being vilified by detractors as an attention-grabbing charlatan, an incompetent scientist, and even a “ Liar for Jesus ”!

Some further background might help you better appreciate the chutzpah of these claims. Dr. Tour is one of the world’s top synthetic organic chemists. He has authored 680 scientific publications and holds more than 120 patents (here is a partial list ). In 2014, Thomson Reuters named him one of “ The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds ,” and in 2018 Clarivate Analytics recognized him as one of the world’s most highly cited researchers .

Tour is also fearless. He joined more than a thousand other scientists in signing the “ Scientific Dissent from Darwinism .” More recently, he has become a thorn in the side of the origin of life research community, offering blunt assessments of the current state of origin of life research.  

Heretical Views

Such heretical views can get you into trouble. In January, Tour delivered a lecture on “ The Mystery of the Origin of Life ” to an audience of nearly 1,000 at a Discovery Institute conference in Dallas. The lecture has already attracted over 74,000 views on YouTube — for good reason. Tour’s public talks sizzle, and his rollicking Dallas lecture was no exception.  

At one point, Tour got a bit carried away while critiquing an article by Nobel laureate Jack Szostak , one of the world’s top origin of life researchers. Highlighting an inaccurate diagram in Szostak’s article, Tour made an off-the-cuff remark about Szostak, telling the audience that “he’s lying to you.” It was an uncharitable characterization. To Tour’s credit, when he was challenged on his use of the term “lying,” he apologized directly to Szostak by phone, and he followed up with a statement to someone else, which he authorized for release to the public. Part of Tour’s statement read :  

That was a strong word (“lying”) which I regret saying. I have already apologized to Jack Szostak by phone, and he very graciously accepted the apology. If given a chance, I would likewise apologize to any of those cited in that talk to whom I said such a thing. My behavior was inappropriate.

Exemplars of Civility?

Tour was right to apologize. At the same time, his detractors aren’t exactly exemplars of civility, and I suspect that some of them were far more interested in smearing Tour than promoting respectful dialogue. Take Gary Hurd, Internet atheist, troll extraordinaire, and the Internet’s main attack dog against Tour right now. Hurd’s rhetoric makes Tour’s off-the-cuff swipe at Szostak seem genteel. Hurd is the one who characterizes Tour as a “ Liar for Jesus .” He also says : “James Tour lies his ass off for money, adulation, and I suppose his hopes for salvation.” Hurd (whose doctorate is in “Social Science,” not chemistry) goes on to accuse Tour of telling “15 lies in under 4 minutes counting repeated lies. That is Trumpian. And, his lies are exposed by undergraduate level chemistry. They are not even sophisticated lies. They are stupid obvious lies.”

I wonder how many people who objected to Tour’s comment about Szostak have called on Hurd to apologize for his vicious personal slurs against Tour?  

The Substance of the Attack

Regardless, what about the substance of Hurd’s attack? Is Tour really a serial liar who, in less than four minutes, shows that he doesn’t understand undergraduate level chemistry? You be the judge:

1. According to Hurd, Tour was lying when he criticized as scientifically inaccurate two figures in Jack Szostak’s article labeled “Simple sugars.” When I asked Tour about this criticism, he responded that Szostak himself conceded to him that these figures were inaccurate! Tour wrote me :

As listed, the sugars do not look like sugars. One needs to have the double bond shown to one of the oxygen atoms or they are not sugars. Shown are a diol and a triol. Even Jack, when he and I spoke on the phone, conceded that point. And he blamed the error on a staff artist from Scientific American , and the mistake was transcribed when the article was used by Nature . I have written several times for the News and Views section of Nature and Nature series journals. It is an honor to be so asked. But we are asked as authors to show care to ensure accuracy. And the galley proofs are returned to us for our careful check and documented approval.  

So much for this supposed lie by Tour.

2. According to Hurd, Tour was lying when he questioned the scientific accuracy of two figures in Szostak’s article labeled “Cyanide derivatives.” Not so, says Tour, who responded to me:

Either we fill in the hydrogen atoms or we show the pi bonds. But we cannot omit both. Moreover, the convention is that all heteroatoms should bear the hydrogen atoms. Only carbon can be devoid of hydrogen in the convention. But that is only to fill the valance states. So one needs to see the pi bonds if we are omitting the hydrogen atoms. Therefore, as drawn, the organic starting materials are glycerol (1,2,3-propanetriol or glycerin), ethylene glycol (1,2-ethanediol), diaminomethane (methanediamine), and 1-aminopropane. The latter two are troubling in light of the text which mentions iron cyanide. Iron(III) cyanide complexes are extremely stable; there is little free cyanide expected to be in the solution, so maybe Szostak is speaking of something else.  

Once again, the charge that Tour was lying or incompetent disintegrates.

Another Charge Evaporates

3. According to Hurd, Tour was lying as well when he claimed that the diagram labeled “RNA nucleotide” in Szostak’s article was inaccurate. Tour’s response to me : “it is not a nucleotide since it is devoid of any stereochemistry.” Again, the charge that Tour doesn’t understand basic chemistry seems to evaporate.

Tour went on to explain that the errors he found in the drawings pale in comparison to the biggest problem with Szostak’s Nature article:  

…all of the above is minor compared to Szostak’s showing that in a single step, heat and light can make a compound that resembles a dehydrated nucleotide (though it is not a nucleotide since it is devoid of any stereochemistry) from “simple sugars” and “cyanide derivatives.” …The major issue is that heat and light cannot afford that conversion from ethylene glycol, glycerol, or the sugar products derived thereupon after their oxidation to the aldehydes. To present that heat and UV light can act on these compounds (even if we are to use these 2 and 3 carbon simple sugars rather than glycerol and ethylene glycol, and to use any simple cyanide derivative) to afford anything like the listed “RNA nucleotide” (albeit not a nucleotide since it shows no stereochemistry) is incorrect and misleading. There are so many steps involved in such a transformation. But to a biologists, like Szostak, explaining to the non-expert, he feels the details are not essential for him to point out. But the details are everything !  

4. Hurd further accuses Tour of lying because Tour declared that Szostak’s article was published by the journal Nature . Hurd argues that the article only appeared in a special section of Nature described by the journal as “an editorially independent supplement produced with the financial support of third parties.” Hurd seems to be implying that Nature wasn’t really editorially responsible for the article. But if you follow the “ About this content ” link provided by Nature itself, you find an expanded explanation that makes clear Szostak’s article was vetted and approved by Nature’s regular editorial staff. “Editorially independent” means not that Szostak’s article was independent from Nature , but that it was independent from the influence of funders. The content was “already deemed worthy of coverage by our editorial departments… The ultimate approval of any story rests with the editorial department.” So the article in question was definitely published by Nature — just like Tour said. Again, no error, and certainly no lie.  

The Primary Literature

5. Hurd chastises Tour for introducing this section of his lecture by saying he was going to look at the “primary literature” and then immediately talking about Szostak’s article, which was a popular-level summary rather than a piece of primary original research. At last, a fair point (sort of), which Tour concedes in his letter to me. But this is a quibble. Whether a popular piece or original research, the article in question was published with the backing of one of the world’s most prestigious science journals and written by one of the world’s leading authorities on origin of life research. That definitely makes the article fair game for Tour and others to criticize. It should be added that Tour went on in his talk to critique other articles that unquestionably are part of the “primary literature,” just like he promised, and he does this even more in his letter to me and in an earlier essay . So this particular complaint is much ado about nothing.  

Finally, Hurd dismisses Tour’s lecture as a whole by asserting: “There are too many falsehoods, and misrepresentations to review in detail.” But if there really were so many falsehoods in Tour’s talk, you would think Hurd would choose to refute the ones that were the most central to Tour’s hour-long critique. Instead, Hurd obsesses about four minutes where Tour criticizes one short article. I’ve seen Hurd’s critique treated online as if it were a devastating takedown of Tour’s views. But anyone who watches Tour’s entire lecture can easily see that all Hurd offers is (at best) a skirmish at the edges.

Tour’s scientific research areas are broad, including medical, mechanical and bioengineering solutions. He has published myriad research articles, developed many patents, and formed several businesses. Tour has received numerous awards for his research, and for his work as a professor. But Dr. Tour’s goal is far beyond accomplishing things of mere scientific interest. He has even developed science curriculum for K-12 students.

One of his most promising studies involves fusion of a separated spinal cord. “We’ve developed a material where we can take a split spinal cord of a rodent, put one drop of the material on it, and then put it back together,” he said. “In that one drop, there is one percent of graphene nanoribbons. The nanoribbons will align longitudinally with the spinal cord. And then what happens is that the neurons grow from top to bottom, and then from bottom to top. Without the graphene nanoribbons, they just miss each other. So, two weeks after the surgery, the rodent can walk just fine. It scored an 18 out of 21 in mobility, with 21 being perfect mobility. In three weeks, it scored a 19, able to run and do most everything that it was doing. This particular rodent had still a little bit of a curl in one of its paws. But hopefully we’ll get better at that.”

In John 14:12, Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things that these, because I am going to the Father.” Tour aims to do just that. “We’re working on restoring optic nerves where we could do whole eye transplants – something that’s never been done. We already have in our group where we’ve developed a system that can restore hearing. We want to restore walking. We want to restore seeing. We want to make the lame walk, the blind see and the deaf hear. We want to do the works of Jesus Christ.”

With the nanocars specifically, Tour envisions them being utilized in biotechnology. “We have motorized versions, too, where you shine a light on them and they will propel across the surfaces. The motor spins at three million rotations per second. We’ve now translated these and taken the wheels off them and are using them in solution to drill into cells,” he said. “We’re using it as a new way to do therapy. We put a peptide on them, which is a small protein. And that will target a specific cell type, and then it goes and it binds to that cell. Then we turn them on, and the motor goes on and drills a hole into the cell. It kills it in about one minute. And so now we’re targeting things like pre-melanoma and seeing if we can use it to target specific cancer cells and very rapidly kill them. So, we’re moving it more into a medical scenario.”

The possibilities of the natural world are only beginning to be tapped into, he said. For Tour, his passion for science is not surpassed by his love of the Maker of it all. Before he became a researcher and professor, Tour was a young man who knew very little about the God of the Bible.

“I grew up in a very secular Jewish family in the suburbs of New York City. I didn’t know the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament. I had picked up a Bible a few times and tried to read it. It never made any sense as a child. We never talked about God in my home. We went to the synagogue a few times a year. And I think the difference between my home and many other Jewish homes is that we were never taught against Jesus Christ. Most Jewish homes speak poorly of Jesus. And because of that, it’s harder to speak to people about Jesus,” he said. “So, when somebody told me that he would like to share with me an illustration of the Gospel, and Jesus was then presented, I didn’t immediately discount him, because I had never been told anything negative about Jesus. And then when I was deeply convicted by the Scriptures that I was reading, it just really hit me. And I was exposed to my sin for the first time. Modern secular Judaism does not look at sin; it does not consider sin. When I was confronted with my sin, my first realization I had, when I was 18 years old, is that I was a sinner. It really hit me. Then, a few months after realizing that I was a sinner, I prayed and invited Jesus into my life. He lifted that burden of sin from me. It really affected me. Jesus stood in my presence, though I couldn’t see Him. I was on my knees. And His presence is so delightful. I wasn’t scared. I just couldn’t stop weeping. It was so overwhelming. To this day, I remember it very clearly. And He’s given His life for me. And He continues to lead me.”

While faith must be accepted with an element of trust, it is not so different from many scientific tenets that are taken by faith, Tour said. “A lot of science is inference based upon facts,” he said. Tour is truly a student of the Bible. The Scripture God has revealed is precious to him; he has studied it as diligently as he has studied science and molecules.

His typical mornings begin at 3 a.m. “Actually, the first thing I do is I just fall on my knees and I spend 45 minutes in prayer. There are a few things on my prayer list that I pray specifically for every day. I just look through the list and offer those up to the Lord. Jesus says in John chapter 17, ’I glorified You on Earth by accomplishing the work that You have given me to do.’ I say, ’Lord, let me glorify you by accomplishing this day the work that you’ve given me to do.’ And I’ll repeat that each morning. And then I pray. I pray for conversions – that I would see people come to the Lord. I say, ’Lord, don’t let this week go by without a conversion. Let me see somebody brought to Christ.’ And then I pray that He gives me the wisdom like Bezalel had, who constructed the tabernacle across many disciplines. He was skilled in all sorts of matter of bronze, gold, silver, wood and fabrics – very unusual. And he had the ability to teach it. Bezalel creativity: creativity comes from God. Something that is really different – something that someone else in the world doesn’t see that you see. And I’ll wash up and then read the Bible, spending time and meditation on the Word of God. I pick up where I left off the day before and then also prepare for the Bible study that I teach each week, and read the Scriptures and just say, ’Lord, speak to me through this passage. What do you want me to say?’ There’s so much that could be said. Our biggest problem in the Scriptures is that we have an embarrassment of riches. ’What shall I say Lord? What shall I bring out? Lord speak to me.’”

LIFE’S WORK

Tour’s meditation time on the Word of God is precious, and has borne fruit in his life, as the Holy Spirit brings to the forefront the Scriptures that apply to his situation. When he and his wife, Shireen, had been married for only a few years and Tour was in graduate school, they started a Bible study in their home. Some of their student guests were very casual, putting their shoes on furniture and letting food drop off their plates. A few days after one of the studies, their toddler daughter found a lingering chicken bone behind a couch cushion and put it in her mouth, leading to a scare for her parents.

“The students would come in and they were messy. The chicken bone – that’s what really set me off. But the Lord spoke to me. I was praying about this. And God spoke to me through the Scriptures, through Proverbs 14:4. It says, ’Where no oxen are, the manger is clean, but much increase comes by the strength of the ox.’ I knew, ’If you want to see the power of God in these people’s lives, these student’s lives, the manger is going to get dirty.’ And so that changed. And I said, ’Forever our home would be open.’ So now we have a lot of students in it. But we just paint a lot and replace furniture and shampoo the furniture and things like that.”

Also as a young man, Tour made it a priority to invest in his family. Each morning he would wake his children at 5:30 so they could have family devotions together. “I would read through the story of the Bible. We would have portions that we would be memorizing together. Then we would get on our knees and each of us would pray. I’m not a trained Bible teacher, but I taught them. I read to them the Word of God. I did the best I knew how. I wasn’t always perfect. A lot of times, I was tired myself.”

Tour explains the deep relevance of Scripture in his daily life. “Moses said in Deuteronomy 32, ’This word that I’ve spoken to you, you are to command your sons carefully to observe. It is not an idle word for you. Indeed, it is your life.’ I believe the Scriptures. Every word of God in that book, every word is true. It is never contested. There’s never been a contest between the Bible and any scientific fact. There has been controversy between what the Bible says and scientific speculation. But the speculations constantly are changing. There has never been a problem between what the Bible says and a scientific fact. This is my life – the Scriptures. The Scriptures are my life. They speak to me. God speaks to me primarily through the Scriptures. I read them from Genesis chapter 1 to Revelation chapter 22. And then when I’m done, I start again. And I leave off just where I left off the day before every day for the past 40 years. It is my life.”

SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY

Being a devout believer and a leading scientist isn’t unheard of, but it’s rare. Tour stands strong in the origin of life debate. “When I look at biological systems, and the amazing functionality of a biological system, even if we just take a cell – just a single cell – and you look at the mechanisms within that cell, it is utterly amazing. How can you look at that and just say, ’Oh well, 3.8 billion years ago, under a rock, it just got started up’ – that’s idiocy. It is amazing to look at that. You don’t even have to look at a human being with all of this. You just look at a single cell – a simple cell and the mechanisms within that cell are huge in complexity,” he said.

Part of being a good scientist is realizing what is still unknown. And the more Tour has learned and studied, the more he is in wonder of creation. “Take any chemist, any biochemist, any evolutionary biologist, and say, ’I will give you all the components of a cell. I’ll give you all the nucleic acids, all the proteins, all the lipids and all the carbohydrates. Could you hook them up in the orders that they need to be hooked up?’ The answer is ’no.’ ’But even if I gave them to you in whatever order hooked up that you wanted, could you then put them together in the cell and have the cell operate?’ And the answer is ’no.’ Anybody who would claim otherwise is a rookie. They really don’t know what they’re talking about. We have no idea how to get this thing working. And when you put it all together, what is the spark of life that gets the thing running? How do you start this thing? Nobody knows. When something dies, it’s very hard to even explain what it is you’ve lost when the cell has stopped functioning. Try to restart that thing – very hard. You don’t even know.”

The discrimination against people of faith within the scientific community is an ongoing issue, Tour said. “They make it so hard for people to speak up. You take a young assistant professor who is going to speak up boldly about his or her faith – and then you threaten that person, that if you don’t follow the party line, you’re not going to get into the societies. I mean, it’s a frightening thing. You wanted conformity? Okay, you’ve got it. This is part of why I’m here. We have to fill universities with people who love the Lord and are not afraid to talk about Him. I even understand and I see myself what’s happened in the last 20 years with my being here at Rice. Students used to come to me to say, ’Biology professor so-and-so is mocking Christians all the time.’ Mocking Christians? Why would they want to do that? Have they not enough biology to teach? Why don’t they come and mock me? We’ll go toe-to-toe. Would you like to put your credentials against mine and tell me how stupid I am? And they can mock me and tell me how silly I am. And we’ll put my credentials against theirs. Students don’t come and tell me this anymore. I think it’s shut the mouths of people.”

Although he hasn’t been welcomed into all circles, Tour’s love of God, people and science has remained intact. “So many mornings, I wake up and feel defeated. I spend time in Scriptures and in prayer, and I come out a roaring lion. Jesus Christ changes lives. He’s the Creator of the universe. He was in the beginning before anything was and anything that’s been created – He did it. Then He lived this perfect life – this perfect life before us – teaching us what it is to walk with God, to have a relationship with the Father. I shudder to think of what my life would be like without Him. If I had to come to work every day and I were just a regular scientist, it would be terribly boring. I know Jesus Christ is with me. I know the God of the universe who created the heavens and the earth guides me. And the only thing that holds me back is my insufficiency of faith. He does great things and He has great things planned for me. By His grace, we swerve into things. I just trust Him. And I want to glorify Him on earth by accomplishing the work that He’s given me to do.”

In 2024, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In 2021, he won the Oesper Award from the American Chemical Society which is awarded to “outstanding chemists for lifetime significant accomplishments in the field of chemistry with long-lasting impact on the chemical sciences.” Tour became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2020 and in the same year was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Centenary Prize for innovations in materials chemistry with applications in medicine and nanotechnology.  Based on the impact of his published work, in 2019 Tour was ranked in the top 0.004% of the 7 million scientists who have published at least 5 papers in their careers.  He was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors in 2015. Rice’s james tour named to national academy of engineering, professor honored for work on “novel forms of carbon”.

Rice University chemist James Tour was named to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions accorded “in recognition of distinguished contributions” to the field.

Tour, the T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor, professor of chemistry and of materials science and nanoengineering and of computer science, was recognized for his research on the “synthesis, fabrication, properties, applications and commercialization of novel forms of carbon and their composites and derivatives.” “I am deeply grateful to my colleagues for putting me forward for this honor,” Tour said. “It’s wonderful to join the ranks of Rice engineers that bear this honor, and to see our work on carbon materials recognized. We think of the impact our research will have in the real world, and aim to put our findings in the context of current needs and challenges we face as a society.”

Tour’s research areas include organic synthesis, chemical biology, spectroscopy and imaging, and nanomaterials synthesis. His work has helped drive discovery and innovation in new materials synthesis through techniques such as flash Joule heating , laser-induced graphene, and single-molecule nanomachine synthesis for biomedical applications. “Rice University takes immense pride in the recognition bestowed upon Professor James Tour as a distinguished member of the National Academy of Engineering,” President Reginald DesRoches said. “Jim is one of those rare talents who can both conduct creative and groundbreaking fundamental research, while also developing technologies that are finding their way into the marketplace. Jim’s dedication to innovation and his profound impact on advancing nanotechnology exemplify the spirit of excellence that defines our institution. We congratulate Jim on this well-deserved honor and look forward to his continued leadership and inspiration within our community and beyond.”

Tour has a significant publication track record exploring sustainable methods to make carbon-, graphene- and silicon oxide-based materials with potential for use in nanoelectronics, photovoltaics, supercapacitors, lithium ion and lithium metal batteries, carbon dioxide capture, water splitting and purification and more. Applications stemming from this research could, at scale, enable new, more sustainable recycling, manufacturing and energy use practices and impact national security. Single-molecule nanomachines such as the molecular motors and molecular jackhammers developed by Tour and his team were proven effective against infectious bacteria , cancer cells and treatment-resistant fungi , showing the potential of a molecular mechanical approach in therapeutics. The Tour lab is also home to the world’s first nanocar with turning buckyball wheels.

“The breadth of Jim’s discoveries across the scientific disciplines, including chemistry and engineering, is truly remarkable,” said Amy Dittmar , the Howard R. Hughes Provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “I’m pleased to see the National Academy of Engineering recognize him for his distinguished accomplishments, including over 800 research publications and more than 200 patents. His research is transforming medicine and the energy transition.” Informed by his research, Tour started more than a dozen companies in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals to electronic memory and advanced materials that he says now have a collective value of nearly $2 billion. Three of the companies are publicly traded.

“This honor is incredibly well-deserved, and I am delighted for Jim,” said Thomas Killian , dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and a professor of physics and astronomy. “His contributions to chemistry are broad and profound, spanning from fundamental discoveries in carbon nanoscience to applications that address great societal challenges related to energy, the environment and human health. His success in translating his research into high-impact companies is remarkable, and he has also been a dedicated mentor to many graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.”

Tour is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including recognition as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Inventors, and as a recipient of the Feynman Prize in Experimental Nanotechnology, the NASA Space Act Award, the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society, the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award.

He is one of 114 new members and 21 international members in the NAE’s newly elected class of 2024. The new members will be formally inducted at the academy’s annual meeting Sept. 29.

The 49-year-old’s new show will air on Discovery, but his solo project doesn’t mean The Grand Tour is over. Filming for the next series kicked off last month in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Hammond’s net worth is estimated at £28.9 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, meaning he sits in-between May and Clarkson.

The Grand Tour season 4 will air on Amazon Prime Video in 2020.

In 2022, Woods became a billionaire, making him the second sports player to reach this distinction alongside LeBron James .

Woods reached this financial milestone despite turning down a "mind-blowingly enormous" offer from the upstart LIV Golf tour, which attempted to compete with the PGA Tour before the companies merged.

According to LIV CEO Greg Norman , the offer was in the "high nine digits."

In addition to his tournament earnings, Woods invested in two homes on Jupiter Island, Fla., a golf course design business and a high-end mini-golf chain .

In 2022, Woods and fellow golf star Rory McIlroy revealed they founded TMRW Sports, a tech-focused venture with plans to launch a new golf league called TGL.

The star also teamed up with Justin Timberlake and British billionaire Joe Lewis for Nexxus, a luxury real estate company.

Though Woods made a killing throughout his career, he also became quite the controversial sportsman following his bombshell infidelity scandal in 2009.

As OK! previously reported, the celeb cheated on his then-wife Elin Nordegren with several women, including Rachel Uchitel , who recently spoke about how the experience still haunts her all these years later.

In a new interview, the golfer's former mistress shared, “When you are in a conversation piece that big that everyone wants to talk about, it's going to go to your grave.”

The 49-year-old expressed how the highly publicized incident altered her ability to “ trust .”

“Well, it's, it's affected my relationships, I have a very small world , I keep it that way. I don't really trust a lot of people because what I've been through is something that a lot of people cannot understand,” she stated.

Uchitel continued: “Listen, it's not like I don't know what people think of me. But I've spent the better part of 15 years trying to do something else that overshadows it.”

How The Grand Tour spent their £160-million to take on Top Gear

The way Jeremy Clarkson tells it, The Grand Tour, the new high-testosterone supercar show he’s hosting with Richard Hammond and James May, has all the ingredients that made Top Gear a world-wide success.

“It is full of middle-aged men falling over with the occasional car sticking its nose into the frame,” he says.

For legal reasons, they are being careful not to actually copy any Top Gear features, but Clarkson says the constant will be Hammond and May, “whom I hate”.

He adds: “But that is really what is at the core of The Grand Tour; our relentless and unending need to belittle and humiliate one another.”

The new show is launched next week via Amazon’s online Prime Video service.

Top Gear fans mourned when Clarkson was fired by the BBC after punching a producer following an argument over a cold buffet, and although May and Hammond were not involved in the fracas, they also left the show.

Their new roost has the biggest budget ever for a streaming internet TV series. So how have the trio, with their obsession for supercars, spent all that money?

£160 million

Total sum Amazon is reported to have paid for 36 episodes of The Grand Tour across three years. That’s nearly £4.5 million a show, about 10 times more than the cost of a Top Gear episode.

£10 million

Clarkson’s reported annual salary, making him Britain’s highest paid TV star. That works out at about £833,000 an episode.

At the BBC, he was said to be paid £1.5 million a year.

His replacement on Top Gear, Matt LeBlanc, is likely to be paid £2 million a year by the BBC, as lead host of the next series – a considerable increase on the £500,000 the former Friends star earned for his work on this summer’s shows, co-starring with Chris Evans, who has now stepped down.

£7.2 million

Reported annual salary for each of the co-presenters Hammond and May, which works out at £600,000 an episode – a distinct improvement on the £500,000 a year they were each said to earn on Top Gear.

£20 million

Value of the cars in the six-minute opening sequence of the first episode, which features 150 custom cars and six jet planes, as well as acrobats and stilt-walkers. The cars include a Bugatti Veyron (£1.4 million) and a Rolls-Royce Phantom (£750,000).

The entire Mad Max-style segment, filmed in the Californian desert with 2,000 extras, cost a flabbergasting £2.5 million to make.

That’s the top speed of the three hypercars in a race-off in Portugal – the £1,150,000 Ferrari LaFerrari driven by May, Hammond’s £712,000 Porsche 918 Spyder and Clarkson’s £866,000 McLaren P1 are among the fastest cars on the planet.

Grand Tour producer Andy Wilman, who had worked on Top Gear with old schoolchum Jeremy Clarkson since 2002, says: “Making that film was a joy. It was the first thing we’d done since leaving the BBC, and it has a real attitude.

“It hits you in the face like hearing a Clash album for the first time. It doesn’t matter whether you like cars or not, that film just has such a chemistry. There’s a massive air of refreshment, we’re all going at it like crazy.

“Partly, it’s because everyone was rested, and it’s because we were fresher than we had been for 15 years, getting back to a time when we were left alone to make the show the way we wanted.

“We had that at the BBC in the beginning, but as the show became more successful, Broadcasting House got more involved in the everyday running. By the end, it had become a treadmill. Amazon have given us no notes, no directions, they’ve just given us a platform to make and broadcast a show. That’s lovely.

“The timetable has been horrendously tight, but we handled it because we’ve suddenly got so much more vim and vigour. Those three are banging off the walls like kids on sugar.”

Cost of destroying 20 G-Wiz electric cars in a gigantic game of Battleships. The 20 cars were used as missiles. “That’s the Christmas show,” says Wilman, “and we wanted to give the traditional board-game market a boost. So we used cars as torpedoes. It was gratuitously big-budget, I admit.”

£3.2 million

Total salaries for 80 crew, who flew a combined distance of 5.1 million miles (at an estimated cost of more than £750,000), taking the production to 15 countries and staying in a total of 1,500 hotel rooms – spending £270,000 on bed and breakfast alone.

The first show is based in California, for the second episode they are in Johannesburg, and the next two are in Britain, including one in the seaside town of Whitby in North Yorkshire.

After that, it’s Holland, and Finland for Christmas, before they go to Namibia for an African special. That one rang alarm bells in the legal department: the new show has to be demonstrably different from the old Top Gear, for contractual reasons, and in 2010 the team had shot one of their most celebrated specials in Botswana.

That episode had featured some of the most beautiful landscape on earth, and naturally the three presenters commented on it. This time, they were asked by wary lawyers not to do that. “So they stood and looked across the Skeleton Coast in Namibia at sunset,” says Wilman, “and went, ‘What a rubbish view!'”

Editing is not yet completed on the final shows, but they go to Germany, then Nashville, Tennessee, and Scotland, before finishing in the United Arab Emirates.

“We’re constantly aware of our previous form, our legacy,” says Wilman. “We have to plan things, we can’t always just let them happen, even though my favourite moments are often the spontaneous ones.

“So with our tongues well and truly in our cheeks, we set about reinventing this action movie, where life is like a video game: if you die, you go back to the beginning. Our version is, ummm . . . a pastiche!”

The size of the on-set audience in a marquee set up in different places for each show, compared with the 900 who used to fill Top Gear’s studio – an aerodrome at Dunsfold, Surrey – for each edition.

The scaled-down production is a matter of sheer logistics: it’s hard enough to transport a marquee big enough to display the cars and set it up in a dozen countries, never mind cramming in almost a thousand fans.

The smaller audience changes the dynamic of the show. The old Top Gear used to have the feel almost of a stadium rock event. The Grand Tour promises to be more intimate.

“Because the tent is much smaller, it alters the dynamic immediately,” says Wilman. “There’s a different atmosphere, an interaction that creates energy, with the audience really filling the space.”

A bigger difference is the loss of the aerodrome’s racetrack, on a converted runway, and its tame racing driver, the Stig. Forced to leave Dunsfold behind, the team also had to abandon the Star In A Reasonably Priced Car feature, where celebrities raced to beat each other’s lap records.

Wilman insists this gave them “a boot up the backside”, spurring them to come up with new challenges.

Some of these are outlandish. In Barbados, the presenters build an underwater reef from wrecked cars bought for next to nothing at a breaker’s yard.

“That wasn’t exactly a big-budget segment,” concedes Wilman.

With the success highlighted above, it's no surprise to see Thomas inside the top-10 of the PGA Tour's career money list. Accumulating over $56 million in eleven years as a professional, Thomas has earned more than legends like Luke Donald, Steve Stricker and Ernie Els.

The figure becomes even more impressive when you consider that it doesn't include Thomas' FedEx Cup success, increasing the total by a further $10 million. Thomas currently sits just $5 million behind good friend Jordan Spieth , and just $7.5 million behind the fifth place entrant, Adam Scott .

His most successful season to date came in 2016-2017, picking up five titles including his first Major win at the PGA Championship. He earned over $9 million that year, and led the money list, but accumulated approximately a third of that figure last season on the PGA Tour.

In terms of total net worth, it has been reported that this number is around the $60 million mark for the Kentucky native.

As you would expect, the American has a number of big sponsors, which includes the likes of Titleist and Footjoy , manufacturers who have been with the American more-or-less since he turned professional.

Like many professional golfers he is also sponsored by NetJets, an American company based around private air travel. Other major sponsors include Citi, an investment bank, and Troon, a management company in golf.

In May 2021, Thomas formed a partnership with Lineage Logistics, a company based out of Michigan that focuses on transporting cold foods. As part of their sponsorship, Thomas will wear Lineage’s logo during official tournaments, and Lineage will commit $100,000 to the Justin Thomas Foundation and its associated charities through donations as well as event support.

That being said, in 2021, he did lose one of his biggest sponsors in Ralph Lauren. This came after Thomas used a homophobic slur because of a missed putt during the Tournament of Champions.

This was immediate and Thomas said he respects the company's decision after putting it in a "terrible position". He added: "It's humiliating, it's embarrassing, and it's not me. It's not a word that I use, but for some reason, it was in there. That's what I'm trying to figure out as to why it was in there, and it's going to be a part of this process and training program or whatever I need to do, not only to prove to myself but prove to my sponsors and prove to those people that don't know who I am that that is indeed not the person I am."

In March 2022, Thomas revealed a new apparel provider in Greyson Clothiers with the founder of the apparel company, Charlie Schaefer, previously spending 13 years working in design at Ralph Lauren.

Both Titleist and FootJoy stuck by the former World No.1, with Thomas currently using a full bag of Titleist clubs , as well as FootJoy golf shoes. James hahn is mad as hell about the changes coming to the pga tour and he isn't afraid to tell you why, share this article.

James Hahn is mad. Like the TV newscaster in the classic movie “Network,” Hahn is mad as hell except he’s mad as hell about the changes coming to the PGA Tour in 2024.

“I mean, I hate them,” Hahn said during a phone interview with Golfweek that interrupted his gym workout. “I’m gonna say exactly what 99.99 percent of fans said about players leaving for the LIV Tour. If our players just said, ‘We’re doing this for the money,’ I would have a lot more respect for them. But how they’re covering up what they’re doing and trying to make it a thing about sponsors and fans and saving opposite-field events. I think that’s all BS.

“All the big names that are talking about this ‘new product,’ if you just came out and said, ‘Hey, we’re doing this for the money,’ they want more guaranteed money and this is another way to funnel more money to the top players in the world, I’d have a lot more respect for them.

“Right now, they’re just covering their ass and saying everything that the PGA Tour basically has trained them to say, have taught them to say and try to make it not about money when everyone knows 100 percent it’s about more guaranteed money being funneled to the top players in the world. We’ve been talking about money for the last two years and for them not to say that that’s not the No. 1 reason why they’re making these changes —it’s very, very hypocritical.”

Hahn, a 41-year-old two-time Tour winner, was just getting warmed up. His fellow Cal alum Max Homa on Wednesday during his pre-tournament press conference said he might go on a rant about the changes and then did for more than 4 minutes. Hahn had a lot on his mind and spoke for more than 45 minutes on Thursday, touching on a wide array of topics. So, let’s get after it.

Hahn’s beef is with the PGA Tour essentially creating what he called “a two-tiered system with a feeder tour onto the elevated Tour series.”

“They have created these elevated events where it significantly impacts other full-field events sandwiched in between full-field events. The solution to their problem is to limit the number of players that get into elevated events to force the other players to play in the other full-field non-elevated events,” he said. “To me, it’s a road that we have to be very careful on because going to back our mission and our purpose is to be able to create the best playing opportunities for our membership and be able to contribute and donate back to the communities and the charities that we play in. It seems like the major theme over these past few years has been how do we get the most money to the most popular players on our Tour?

“I use the word popular instead of best players because, granted that Tiger is one of the best players to ever have played this game, but he just won the PIP money two years running without really playing golf, without being ranked in the top 1,000 and without keeping his card. I never would have imagined growing up that someone could make more money just for being popular than for how good they are on the course.

“And I say that as one who believes pay that man for bringing our Tour to where it is today and I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve it but what are we doing as a business, as a company, what are we doing? We’re not spending money to provide the best playing experience for our members; all we’re concerned with is just pushing money to the top players on our Tour. That’s where we are getting a great divide between the elevated events and non-elevated events and the players who play those two different tours.”

“We’ve lost our power, the majority of the membership has lost their power to the elite running the show.”  —James Hahn

Hahn served as a player director on the PGA Tour until the end of the year and was replaced by Peter Malnati to represent the Tour’s rank-and-file:

“When I see Peter I’m going to tell him exactly what Lanto Griffin told me when I was put in that position and my mind was swayed by the executives on the board. He said, ‘You were put there for a reason to voice the opinion of the majority of the players on the PGA Tour.’ If he doesn’t have enough balls to sack up and vote no against it then I don’t want him on the board. We picked the wrong guy. He was put there to argue our side of the discussion.

“It’s gonna pass regardless but if he doesn’t have enough balls to vote against it and take the stance that I did and stand up for what he believes in then he shouldn’t be on the board. We don’t need another person like that on the board, if you can’t stick up for us. Let’s be honest, it would have passed, they had enough votes to pass. It’s just a cop out to prevent the media, yourself, Alan Shipnucks of the world asking him why he voted no. If he doesn’t have the courage to go into the lion’s den then he should get out. We need somebody else in there. I did it, right. And everyone saw how I was treated.”

On voting against last year's increase $100 million PIP: 'It's just a $50 million mistake'

Buried in the last paragraph of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan’s memo to players was the announcement of the reduction Player Impact Program (PIP) money from $100 million back to its original level of $50 million. Does Hahn feel vindicated for casting the lone opposing vote against the increase?

“Yes, 100 percent. We never should have gone to $100 million to begin with but that’s $50 million we just threw away on this experiment. And we knew that no one was really gonna go jump ship (to LIV). You’re just funneling money to this small group of people just because they were demanding it. They were literally negotiating with the Tour and they were saying that this is what they want or else. They basically said, not word for word, ‘We want $120 million in the PIP or else’ and we said, ‘OK, what if what if we give you 100?’ ‘OK, we’ll settle for 100.’ That’s not how a business is run. That’s not how an organization is run. That’s not how the PGA Tour should be run.

“It’s just a $50 million mistake. Think about what we could have done with an extra $50 million. Like, the money just doesn’t grow on trees. We could have given $50 million to charities around the United States of America, and still be in the same position that we are today. We wasted it on 10 people. Think about how ridiculous that is. That was my stance from the get-go. What changed from last year to this year for us to drop it from $100 million to $50 million? What changed?

Here Hahn describes why he felt that his voice wasn’t being heard by the board, and he threatened to resign from the board before being talked out of that by a Tour executive.

“So here’s where the power of influence, the power of someone’s on-course excellence means more in those meetings than the correct opinion,” he said. “I’ve been saying the same exact thing about Patrick Cantlay. He won the FedEx Cup and didn’t get any PIP money. And I said that in the meeting and nothing happens. Well, guess what? Patrick Cantlay gets (elected to the board and gets) in those meetings. He says something very similar, that he’d rather play for it. And they listened to him. Why would they listen to him and not me? The message is the same. It’s because he has a higher world ranking than I do, he has won more golf tournaments than I have, his net worth is triple what I’m worth. Does any of that even matter when the message is the same and it’s the correct message?

“It happened before when Jordan Spieth was on the board that the (four independent directors) listen to players that have a higher world rank than those who don’t. That’s just my personal experience.

“After my first year on the board, I wanted to resign because I didn’t feel like my voice was being heard. I felt that they were listening to Jordan, which granted, he’s very, very smart, very well spoken. He articulates his words in a way that I could never and he gets his message across. He’s a very likable person in those meetings. On and off the course, I have nothing but the most respect for Jordan. But you can see how when he talks that everyone’s eyes in the room just glimmer like he’s the prom queen, and everyone wants to ask her out for the dance. When Jordan would talk to an executive in the board meetings, that (independent director) started blushing, ‘Oh, my gosh, Jordan’s talking to me. How awesome is this?’

“So, they talked me out of resigning and said this is exactly why we need you on the board. Because we need you to speak up and I say, ‘Well, how do I speak up when you guys don’t listen? Why should I be on board? You already have your agenda. Everything’s already been written out. We already know what’s going on and you guys are more interested in this small group of people, this elite group of people, and not necessarily what’s better, what’s best for the whole Tour.’

“Where do we go from here? I don’t know. I’m outspoken. These are my opinions. I’m just trying to make the Tour better. But I don’t see how taking care of the top players in the world and not taking care of the bottom players on our Tour unites us all to want to be better.

“I’ll play the remainder of this year with full status and then next year I’ll probably end up with conditional status, past champion status and I’ll play in those opposite-field events and then retire the following year because I mean, I’m older. I can’t really hang with the younger stars of our game. I mean, they’re really good. They’re really good. But also I don’t feel like the Tour is going in a direction that the majority of PGA Tour players like.”

Hi Terry. Sting has had a very successful solo career. Mick and Keith wrote songs together and therefore always split their royalties. Had either wrote all their songs individually wdp they would’ve been up there with Bono.

Bruce Springsteen could probably be worth a few hundred million more if he were to have ever sold the rights to use his songs for advertising..imagine what nike, automobile companies or any company with a device that ” runs ” would shell out for ‘ Born To Run ‘ ? He of course has turned down any such endorsements and keep in mind this goes back 35 years + .. before he was financially set for life , though he wasn’t doing to shabby back then .. oh yeah the beer industry would probably love the rights to ‘ Glory Days ‘ !
