Indians travelling through Japan do not require a transit visa, provided they stay within the airport's transit area and have the necessary documents proving their onward journey to another country. If your layover involves a same-day connecting flight and you do not leave the airport's transit zone, a transit visa is not needed.

However, should you wish to explore and visit places in Japan during your layover, obtaining a transit visa is essential. Transit visas are typically valid for up to 15 days. The required documents for a transit visa application usually include:

  • A completed visa application form, accompanied by a photograph.
  • Your passport.
  • Confirmed flight tickets showing your travel route.
  • A copy of the visa to your primary destination.
  • A bank statement to verify financial stability.

When applying for a Japanese visa, knowing what could potentially lead to a denial is crucial for strengthening your application and boosting the likelihood of getting approved. Here are some important considerations:

  • Lack of Proper Documentation: Submitting incorrect or misleading information can cause your application to be immediately declined and may also affect future attempts. All Japan tourist visa documents for Indians that you submit must be authentic, completed and satisfactory.
  • Not Enough Proof of Financial Stability: It's important to show a bank balance of at least INR 1,00,000 to cover your travel expenses and any emergencies that might arise.
  • Questionable Travel Record: A history of overstaying visas in other countries could be seen as a red flag, suggesting a risk of not adhering to Japan's visa regulations.
  • Intentions Under Scrutiny: Not being able to convincingly explain the reason for your visit and its consistency with your planned activities might arouse suspicion. Expressing plans to work on a visa that doesn't allow employment could result in denial. The activities planned in Japan, the applicant's civil status or position, and the intended duration of stay must align with the conditions for the status of residence and the period of stay as outlined in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.

When you arrive at a Japanese airport, here are key points visitors should keep in mind:

  • Prepare your travel documents: Ensure you have your passport, valid Japan visa (if applicable), return flight ticket, and accommodation confirmations at hand. This streamlines the immigration process.
  • Advice for minors : Minors travelling alone should remain with the airline staff assigned to them for security. Upon landing, locate the pre-arranged adult who will meet you, ensuring a seamless arrival.
  • Familiarise yourself with Japan's regulations: Head to the customs area if you need to declare items or if your baggage requires inspection. Understanding the customs rules at Japanese airports is crucial to prevent any complications.

Q1: i want to go to japan. do i need a visa.

A1: People of some countries (or from some regions) do not need a visa if their period of stay in Japan is 90 days or less and they are not going to be engaged in income-earning activities. Refer to the List of Countries and Regions that have Visa Exemption Arrangements with Japan .

Q1: how long is the application examination period.

A1: The standard processing period, when it does not have any problem on contents of the application, takes five working days from the next day after the date of the acceptance of application. Meanwhile, it may take longer than usual if a large number of visa applications converge at a short-time period. In addition, please note that it may take more than 5 working days (ranging from a couple of weeks to several months) in such cases where additional confirmation is required (submission of additional documents, an interview with the applicant, inquiries, etc.), or when a visa application is made for a long-term stay without a Certificate of Eligibility. Thus, visa applicants are recommended to apply early for their visa well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Q2: Why was I asked to provide additional documents?

A2: Sometimes additional information will be required for the examination process, and sometimes you will be asked in the process to submit extra documents in addition to the documents indicated as the necessary documents. Each applicant has different conditions and circumstances, and sometimes we do not become aware of these until the application has been accepted, therefore there are some documents that we do not ask everyone to submit from the beginning. If you do not submit the additional documents, the examination cannot be processed any further, and you will not be able to get the visa issued.

Q3: My departure date is approaching so could you issue the visa as soon as possible?

A3: We cannot make a decision about whether to issue or reject the visa application until the necessary examination has been completed. We process the applications fairly in the order in which we received them. Apply for the visa as soon as possible once your travel plan has been decided.

3. Issuance or Rejection of the Visa Application

Q1: tell me why you rejected my visa application..

A1: The reason for the rejection is that your application did not meet the criteria of visa issuance . We do not give you the specific reason of the rejection because if we do so, the information would eventually become known to the public. Once that happened, there is a danger that some people might misappropriate such information to get around the visa examination process and try to enter Japan for illegal purposes. It would impede the proper visa examination process in the future and have negative effects on Japanese society. The Administrative Procedure Act, Article 3, Paragraph 1, Item 10 excludes "dispositions concerning departure and immigration of foreign nationals" from application of the obligation to show the examination criteria or the reasons for the rejection of the application.

Q2: Why was my visa application rejected even though a Certificate of Eligibility was issued?

A2: The Certificate of Eligibility does not guarantee the issuance of the visa. The certificate means that the Ministry of Justice certifies that the foreign national meets the condition of landing (entering Japan): the activity which the foreign nationals wish to engage in Japan at the time of the landing examination is not fraudulent, and the activity is qualified to acquire status of residence that is stipulated in the Immigration Control Act, etc. Therefore, in the visa examination process, we do not examine the applicability of status of residence, but some other points such as the verification of the applicant's identity and the validity of his/ her passport. If it is found that the application does not meet the criteria of visa issuance in the process of examination, or it is determined that the Certificate of Eligibility was issued based on mistaken or fraudulent information, a visa will not be issued.

Q3: Why can't I reapply immediately after my visa application was rejected?

A3: We do not accept your visa application if your previous application was rejected and you will apply for the same purpose of visit within six months from the rejection. This is because if, for example, we accept the same application the day after it was rejected, the circumstances of the applicant would not change so that the result of examination would be the same. However, we sometimes accept re-applications within six months in cases where your circumstances have changed significantly after the rejection, and travel to Japan is necessary for humanitarian reasons. Consult with the Japanese Embassy or Consulate where you plan to apply for the visa before making the application.

Q4: Can I pay visa issuance fees with a credit card or a check?

A4: In principle, fees must be paid in cash using the local currency. In case that you apply for eVISA through the JAPAN eVISA website, online payment by credit card is available for certain countries and regions. You will not be required to pay visa issuance fees if the visa is not issued.

4. Prior to Entering Japan

Q1: i want to postpone my travel. until when is my visa valid.

A1: The period of validity of a single-entry visa (that becomes invalid as soon as once you enter Japan) is basically three months. Enter Japan within three months of the issuance of the visa. If you wish to postpone your travel for longer than three months, you will be required to make another visa application.

Q2: I have decided not to invite a foreign national to Japan after all. What should I do?

A2: Please report that you have cancelled the invitation, together with the personal identification information of the visa applicant, by email to the Embassy / Consulate General where the visa was issued. In addition, tell the visa applicant to bring his/her passport to the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General to cancel his/her visa. Note that visa fees will not be refunded even if the visa is cancelled before being used.

Q3: I have lost my passport with the visa in it. What should I do?

A3: Contact the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General that issued the visa to inform what happened. Also, it is recommended that you submit a lost property form to the local police station. If you need a new visa, you must make an application again.

Q4: Why was my application to enter Japan rejected even though I had a valid visa?

A4: A visa is no more than one of the requirements for the application to land in Japan and it does not guarantee that you will be able to enter Japan. (There is a warning on the visa application form and your signature on the application form means you have accepted this fact.) Even if you have a valid visa, sometimes you will not be given permission to enter Japan, for example in cases where the person who makes the landing application is different from the person whose name is recorded in the visa, and also in cases where you cannot properly explain to the immigration officer the activities you plan to engage in after entering Japan.

Q1: How will the personal information submitted at the time of visa application be handled?

A1: The personal information of the visa applicant, inviting person and guarantor will be managed appropriately in the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General based on the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. Also, local travel agencies that wish to handle visa applications have to get the approval by Japanese embassies /consulates, and the condition of such approval is that they have agreed to manage personal information appropriately based on the aforementioned act, under the same criteria as the outsourcing organization.

Q2: What is the legal basis for the issuance or non-issuance of my visa?

A2: Under the international customary law, the decision as to whether or not to issue a visa to a foreign national is determined to be a sovereign act of each country. Japanese consuls carry out the administration related to visas based on the Act for Establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Article 4 Item 13, Article 7 Item 1, and Article 10 Item 2 and Item 3).

Q3: Isn't the refusal of a visa for a spouse of Japanese an infringement of human rights?

A3: Entering Japan is not a right of a person of foreign nationality, so this is not an infringement of human rights. On the other hand, there are sometimes cases of human trafficking in which people from developing countries in an economically and socially vulnerable position are brought to developed countries for fake marriages, illegal work, etc. With this issue in mind, Japan is carrying out careful visa examinations in order to protect the human rights of foreign nationals, etc.

Q4: Isn't it unfair that people from countries which exempt Japanese from tourist visas, are required to get a visa to enter Japan?

A4: Visa exemptions are not necessarily bilateral. For example, there are many cases in which developing countries give visa exemptions to Japanese as a unilateral measure because accepting travelers from Japan is economically advantageous for those countries. However, on the other hand, if Japan gave visa exemptions to people from all of those countries, there could be a negative impact on the internal security and national interest of Japan. For example, it could lead to an increase in the number of illegal overstayers and illegal workers, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to consider visa exemptions carefully from a comprehensive perspective.

Q5: As a “guarantor”, to what extent do I need to be responsible?

A5: The "guarantor" for the visa application is the person who resides in Japan and makes a promise to the head of the embassy / consulate (the Japanese ambassador/ consul-general, etc.) to the effect that the visa applicant will stay legally in Japan. The responsibilities of the guarantor only entails moral responsibilities and does not entail legal responsibilities like that of the "guarantor" in the Civil Code. However, if it is recognized that the guaranteed matters (expenses for the applicant's stay in Japan, return travel expenses, compliance with laws and regulations) have not been performed rightly, that person would lose credibility as a guarantor in subsequent visa applications. Also, be aware that if the guarantor or inviting person made a false statement in the documents about their relationship to the visa applicant or the purpose of visit, or if that caused terrorists to enter Japan or crime such as human trafficking, they may be held criminally responsible.

India tourist visa from the embassy in 2023: A complete guide

Published: June 7, 2023

India tourist visa from the embassy

This article is a complete guide to obtaining India tourist visa from the embassy or consulate. You can learn everything about India tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility, documents needed, fee and application procedure.

Indian missions around the world issue India tourist visas for those that require a visa to enter India. Most nationalities are eligible to apply for an e-Visa or Visa on Arrival. But there are a handful of nationalities that are not eligible. These nationalities must apply for a tourist visa at their nearest Indian embassy or consulate.

Nationalities that are eligible for India e-Visa or India Visa on Arrival are also eligible to apply for an Indian tourist visa from their nearest Indian embassy or consulate. There may be occasions where a tourist visa from the embassy is a better choice than an India e-Visa or India Visa on Arrival . For example, US nationals can get a 10-year tourist visa from the embassy vs an Indian e-Visa which is only valid for 5 years. So a tourist visa from the embassy is a better choice in this case.

How to apply for Indian tourist visa from the embassy?

The India tourist visa application is a two-step process.

STEP 1: Online Application

Step 2: appointment.

The first step in the Indian tourist visa application process is to fill out an online application on the India visa portal .

If you are a family or group, each person must complete one online application form. There is no family application. Similarly, each person must schedule one separate visa appointment for document submission.

In the online application, you must select the Indian embassy/consulate where you plan to apply for your visa.

After filling out the application, you must print and sign it.

If the Indian embassy/consulate did not outsource the visa application to a visa application center, then you can walk into the embassy/consulate any day to pay the fee and submit your visa application.

If the Indian embassy/consulate has outsourced the visa process to a visa application center, then you will have to go to the visa application center’s website and schedule an appointment. You may be able to pay the visa fee while scheduling the appointment.

On the day of the appointment, you must submit your completed and signed application form, photographs and original passport. You must also pay the fee if you haven’t while scheduling the appointment.

If there is no visa application center near you, you can also send your completed application and documents to the visa application center by mail.

Word of caution on India tourist visa fake websites

If you search on the internet, you will see that there are many Indian visa websites posing as “official websites”. There is ONLY one OFFICIAL website for Indian tourist visas. The rest are all fake. The OFFICIAL website is below.

If applied directly at an Indian embassy or consulate: There is no option to track your application. But the processing time is fairly quick. The Indian mission where you are applying will tell you when to come back and pick up your passport, which is usually within 3 working days.

If applied at a visa application center such as VFS: You can track your visa application status on the visa application center’s website.

How to receive the approved India tourist visa?

If applied directly at an Indian embassy or consulate: At the time of submitting your documents at the embassy, the visa officer will tell you when to come back to pick up your passport. You will simply have to go back on that day to pick up your passport with your India visa.

If applied at a visa application center such as VFS: When your visa is processed, you will be notified by email to pick up your passport. If you have opted for returning the passport via mail/courier, your passport will have mailed to your address.

Visa processing times: applications outside the UK

Check how quickly you’ll receive a decision on your UK visa application if you are applying from outside the UK.

You are not required to book any travel before you apply or before a decision is made on your application.

You should allow enough time before you plan travel to make a visa application. You will only receive a refund of your application fee if we have not started to process your application.

You may be able to pay for a faster decision on a visa application.

When your application processing time starts

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) starts processing your application once you either:

verify your identity and submit your documents and application online using the UK Immigration: ID Check app . We’ll tell you if you can use this

attend your appointment at a visa application centre (VAC) to provide your fingerprints and a photograph (biometric information)

Applications made in the USA

If you make an appointment at a USCIS Application Support Center to provide your fingerprints and a photograph (biometric information) , you must then send your passport and documents to the VFS processing hub in New York.

If you make an appointment at a VFS premium Application Centre to provide your fingerprints and a photograph (biometric information), you can submit your passport and supporting documents at that location.

In both cases, the processing time starts when VFS receive your application.

When your application processing time ends

You’ll get a letter or email to let you know that a decision has been made on your application .

If you attended a visa application centre, you should not visit one until you have been contacted to do so.

You do not need to contact UKVI to track your application if you’ve already made a visa application and it is still within the current processing times.

When you might wait longer

Your visa application may take longer to process if, for example:

  • the information in your application is not accurate or requires further consideration
  • you need to provide further evidence, for example evidence of funds
  • your supporting documents need to be verified
  • you need to attend an interview
  • further information is required on your personal circumstances (for example if you have a criminal conviction)
  • UKVI is experiencing increased visa demand

You will be contacted by a letter or email if we need more information on your visa application.

Current processing times

The processing times listed below are based on the current volume of visa applications.

All UK processing times are measured against agreed customer service standards .

APPLY FOR INDIAN VISA ONLINE

  • Evisa.Express

It’s natural to feel anticipation, perhaps even apprehension, once you’ve submitted your eVisa application. After all, you just want your trip to go smoothly, right? Don’t worry – when you submit with Evisa Express, you can depend on our team of eVisa experts to maximize your chances for eVisa approval. Our average application approval time is 51 hours, though individual times may vary. Our success rate for India eVisas is 96%.

But what if your application is taking longer than you expected? How can you check your application status? How will you know once your application has been approved? In this article, we present the answers to these common questions about India eVisa processing times:

  • How long do applications usually take to be approved?
  • How can I check my application status?
  • It’s already been 60 hours! Is this taking too long? Help!
  • This is taking too long! Should I resubmit my application?
  • I’m now worried that some of the information on my application wasn’t correct.
  • I’m now worried that of the documents I uploaded wasn’t the right one.
  • How will I know when my eVisa has been approved?

1. How long do applications usually take to be approved?

The maximum application processing time is 72 hours: That’s just 3 days. And when you apply with Evisa Express, times are often much quicker. Our average application processing time is only 51 hours. So whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, feel certain that you’ll get your eVisa to India quickly and securely.

2. How can I check my application status?

You can check your application status at any time through Evisa Express’s secure website.

3. It’s already been 60 hours! Is this taking too long? Can’t you do something?

Don’t worry! Though it’s true that our average processing time is 51 hours, it’s perfectly normal for applications to take 60 hours or longer. The maximum time you’ll have to wait for a result is 72 hours.

After our team of eVisa experts goes over your application, we submit it to the Indian government for approval. At that point, the process is out of our hands; approval time depends on the Indian government. Remember, though, that our customer support team is available 24/7 should you need to reach out.

4. This is taking too long! Should I resubmit my application?

No! Under no circumstances resubmit your application, especially not within 72 hours of submission. Having duplicate applications will make the process take even longer, or halt processing altogether. It’s best to wait until you receive your decision. Chances are, the decision will be positive: Our application success rate to India is 96%.

5. I’m now worried that some of the information on my application wasn’t correct.

One of the best reasons to apply with Evisa Express is that our team of eVisa experts goes over your application with a fine-toothed comb before it is submitted to the Indian government. We check for inaccuracies, and any information that needs to be updated, added, or corrected. If we find anything that needs fixing, we reach out to the applicant immediately for corrections.

6. I’m now worried that of the documents I uploaded wasn’t the right one.

Have no fear – the Evisa Express team is on the lookout for incorrect documentation. It’s our job to locate inaccuracies in the application and uploaded documentation, and to reach out to the applicant for corrections if we need them. If you’ve uploaded an incorrect document, you’ll have the opportunity to send us the correct one before we submit your application to the Indian government.

7. How will I know when my eVisa has been approved?

Once your eVisa has been approved, you’ll receive an immediate notification at the email you submitted in your application. A copy of your eVisa itself will be attached to the message.

Once you receive your eVisa, print it out and carry it with you when you enter India. Travel authorities may want to see it. It’s also a good idea to carry a copy of your return/onward ticket, as well as proof of sufficient income to sustain you on your trip.

Evisa Express: Welcome to India

Even if your application has taken close to 72 hours, don’t worry: When you submit through Evisa Express, there’s a 96% chance that your application will be approved. And most of our applications are approved even quicker than that. With Evisa Express to review your application and facilitate its submission, you can be sure that your eVisa application is in good hands. Evisa Express: You take care of your trip; we take care of your visa.
