2024 PGA Championship prop bet picks and PGA Tour predictions

T he best players in the world will be competing for the Wanamaker Trophy this week at the 2024 PGA Championship . The year's 2nd major is being hosted for the 4th time by Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. First round tees off on Thursday morning.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets from BetMGM Sportsbook among the 2024 PGA Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the heavy favorite at +450, and he's also the top-ranked player in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Rory McIlroy comes in at No. 2 in the rankings, and he also has the 2nd-shortest odds (+750) to win this week – which would be his 3rd consecutive victory on tour. Brooks Koepka may be ranked 29th in Golfweek's poll but he has the 3rd-best odds to win (+1400), with fellow LIV Golf member Jon Rahm being 5th (+1800).

Valhalla is a brute of a course, coming in at 7,609 yards as a par 71. The venue was renovated in 2021 in advance of this year's PGA Championship, which comes 10 years after the last time Valhalla hosted (2014). The overall length of the course is 151 yards longer than it was in 2014, so it should play even tougher than it did then.

PGA Championship – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. ET.

Xander Schauffele (+300)

Schauffele couldn't close out the Wells Fargo Championship thanks to a final-round 65 by McIlroy, and it once again raises some concerns about his inability to close out big tournaments. He could break through with his 1st major win this week, but taking him for a top-5 is much safer.

Rory McIlroy (+160)

McIlroy is still looking for his 1st major title since the 2014 PGA Championship, which just happened to be played at Valhalla. It'll take a great week for him to beat everyone in the field, but he should be in the mix on Sunday after winning each of his last 2 starts.

Jon Rahm (+333)

This time last year, Rahm was +800 to win the PGA Championship. That's not much longer than his odds for a top 5 this week, while his outright odds sit at +1800. There's no question he's being discounted because of his move to LIV Golf, as well as his struggles at Augusta, but Rahm is still one of the best players in the world.

PGA Championship – Top-10 picks

Brooks koepka (+150).

Koepka may have flopped at the Masters, but he's played well since then, even winning a LIV event in the last month. He should have a much better showing at the PGA Championship, an event he's already won 3 times, including last year at Oak Hill. He's a great fit for any difficult course like Valhalla because of the way he avoids costly mistakes and scrambles to save par.

Ludvig Aberg (+160)

If Aberg can notch a top 5 in his Masters debut, he can come in the top 10 at the PGA Championship. He's deadly accurate off the tee while still hitting it plenty long for a course with as much length as Valhalla, and his putter was excellent at Augusta throughout the week.

Cameron Young (+350)

Young has 5 top-10 finkshes in his last 8 major starts, which includes a T-3 at the 2022 PGA Championship. He still hasn't won on the PGA Tour, but he's come close several times and this week could be another near-win for Young. He's at his best when playing difficult courses that don't turn into birdie fests. Valhalla won't yield very low scores so Young should be able to hang around.

Other T10 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Max Homa (+275)

PGA Championship – Top-20 picks

Will zalatoris (+225).

Zalatoris at +225 for a top-20 finish feels like a fantastic value. He's finished in the top 10 in 4 of his last 5 starts in the PGA Championship or U.S. Open, with the only exception being a missed cut at the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Valhalla is a ball striker's course and Zalatoris has the length and accuracy to contend on Sunday.

Cameron Smith (+175)

Smith will need to keep it in the fairway in order to compete for the Wanamaker Trophy because if he starts spraying it off the tee, even his short-game prowess won't be able to overcome it. That being said, he's an outstanding putter and chipper so anytime he does miss the green, he'll have a chance to save par.

Corey Conners (+275)

Conners finished 17th at Kiawah in 2021, missed the cut in the 2022 PGA and came in 12th last year at Oak Hill, so he's had some success in this major championship before. His iron play will give him a fighting chance at Valhalla, even if his putter stays cold.

Other T20 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Akshay Bhatia (+375)
  • Alex Noren (+320)
  • Jason Day (+200)

PGA Championship – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Cameron Smith (+115) vs. Joaquin Niemann (-150)

Niemann might have the higher floor, but Smith absolutely has the higher ceiling this week. For that reason, Smith is the better pick at plus money against Niemann, who's never finished better than 23rd in a U.S. Open or PGA Championship.

Jason Day (-110) vs. Sungjae Im (-110)

Im has been up and down all year and though he's shown signs of life in his last 2 starts at the RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo, he's just not a great fit for U.S. Open/PGA Championship-style courses. Day, on the other hand, has won a PGA Championship.

Sahith Theegala (-120) vs. Sam Burns (-105)

Theegala is a legitimate contender this week as he looks to take his career to the next level, showing the creativity around the greens to save par when he misses with an approach.

PGA Championship – Top Japanese

Hideki matsuyama (+100).

Assuming his back is fine, Matsuyama shouldn't have much trouble cashing this bet. There are only 3 other Japanese players in the field, none with better odds than +350; Keita Nakajima is the 2nd-favorite behind Matsuyama. It's surprising this line is only even money.

PGA Championship – Top Debutant

Ludvig aberg (+300).

Aberg was the top debutant at the Masters and he's the favorite to be the same at the PGA this week. He just has a complete skill set to perform well at any course. Theegala is the 2nd-favorite to be the top debutant at +900, with Stephan Jaeger , Akshay Bhatia and Jake Knapp also lurking.

PGA Championship – First-round leader

Xander schauffele (+2800).

Schauffele was the 1st-round leader last week at Quail Hollow with a blistering score of 64, and he now ranks 6th in 1st-round scoring average this season. If you have concerns about his ability to close at a major, take him to be the 1st-round leader at an even better number than his outright odds.

Alex Noren (+9000, +700 for top 10)

Back to Noren we go with this 1st-round wager. He's fired rounds of 64 and 67 on Thursday in his last 2 starts and has the 3rd-best 1st-round scoring average on tour. He's been in the top 10 after Round 1 in each of the last 2 tournaments so that's another way to play this.

More expert prop bet predictions

Group d winner: will zalatoris (+450).

Zalatoris is grouped with Tyrrell Hatton (+275), Matsuyama (+350), Day (+350) and Im (+400), yet he has the longest odds of the 5. He has a better track record at the PGA Championship than any of those players in the last 3 years.

Koepka and Schauffele both to finish in top 10 (+900)

Koepka loves the PGA Championship and Schauffele is on a heater with 7 top-10s in his last 10 starts. At +900, it's worth playing because they're 2 serious contenders to hoist the trophy on Sunday.

2024 PGA Championship highlights: Xander Schauffele leads with 62

The first round of the 2024 PGA Championship is over at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, with Xander Schauffele off to a great start as he seeks his first major championship.

Schauffele shot a 62 (nine birdies, no bogeys) on Thursday, tying a record he shares with two others for best round at a major. He holds a three-shot lead on Tony Finau, Saheeth Theegala and Mark Hubbard.

Scottie Scheffler , who entered the tournament as the No. 1 player in the world and won the year’s first major championship at the Masters, shot a 4-under 67 and is tied for 12th place.

Tiger Woods teed off early in the morning and shot a 1-over.

USA TODAY Sports provided updates throughout the day. Here's how the first round went:

Mark Hubbard climbs to second place

Mark Hubbard put up a fantastic ending to the day as he jumped to second place after finishing the first round at 6-under-par.

Hubbard birdied three of the last four holes, and the late push began with a 30-foot putt on the par-4 15th. He doesn't have a PGA Tour win, but he ends the day just three shots back of the leader and he's tied with Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala.

First round on pace to break PGA Championship history

It’s been a great day to golf at Valhalla Golf Club, so great that the tournament record is set to be broken.

With the first round nearly wrapped up, 66 golfers are under par, which would be the most in PGA Championship history. The previous record was 60 in 2006 at Medinah.

Several players have noted the grass has been very soft and has played a factor in the low scores. A majority of the the players at the top of the leaderboard teed off in the morning.

Late golfers making some noise

Most of the crowd has left Valhalla Golf Club with the sun setting soon, but those still on the course are playing some good golf.

Mark Hubbard and Maverick McNealy are part of the third-to-last group to tee off Thursday, but they are both shooting well as they get close to wrapping up the day. Both are 4-under-par.

Scottie Scheffler wraps up first round

The top player in the world had a great first round in Louisville, finishing the day at 4-under-par and in a tie for 10th place.

Scheffler had a perfect start to the day with an eagle on No. 1, and he’s been able to overcome a couple of bogeys to be one of several players with low scores. He’s been on fire this year with four tour wins, including the 2024 Masters, and he remains in the hunt for another major championship this weekend.

Afternoon golfers climb leaderboards

No one has been able to get near Xander Schauffele’s incredible first round, but those who teed off in the afternoon are making progress.

All eyes have been on world No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler, and he’s played a steady first round at 4-under-par through 16. But some lesser known golfers had impressive days that were nearly free of mistakes. Tom Kim shot a 5-under-par to finish the day in a tie for fourth place, and Thomas Detry is also tied with Kim on the leaderboard.

Another hot streak for Collin Morikawa

Collin Morikawa nailed three consecutive birdies in the front nine to get him out of an early hole, and he’s done it again on the back nine to propel him near the top of the leaderboard.

Morikawa birdied Nos. 12-14 to put him at 4-under-par and is now tied for sixth. He’s knocked in some big putts during the hot streak, all of which were at least 10 feet away from the cup.

Tom Kim having mistake-free first round

Tom Kim has been impressive in his young PGA Tour career, and the 21-year-old is having another outstanding round on Thursday at 5-under-par through 13 holes.

Kim hasn't bogeyed in the first round so far, and he has birdies in three of his last four holes. His best finish in a major came in The Open in 2023 when he finished tied for second.

Thomas Detry climbing leaderboard

Thomas Detry has played a mistake-free first round so far as he’s made five birdies and avoided any bogeys through 11 holes. His shots on the fairway have been excellent and have set him up for relatively short putts. He’s tied for fourth place alongside Rory McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre.

The Belgian golfer has never won a PGA Tour event.

Scottie Scheffler finishes front nine strong

Scottie Scheffler had a hot start to the day with an eagle on No. 1, and he’s keeping a steady pace at 3-under-par through nine.

The world No.1-ranked player looked immortal until he bogeyed on the par-4 fifth, but he regained ground with a birdie on the par-5 seventh. He had a chance to climb up the leaderboard on No. 8 with a 56-foot putt for birdie, but it fell just short of the cup.

Xander Schauffele remains in first place after his fantastic 9-under-par day.

Collin Morikawa drills long putt to get under par

The 2020 PGA Championship winner is heating up after a slow start.

Collin Morikawa had two bogeys through five holes, but he's found a rhythm with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-8. He capped off an impressive streak with a 41-foot putt on the par-3 eighth to secure the birdie and put him at 1-under-par for the first time on Thursday.

Jon Rahm struggling early

Jon Rahm had an odd beginning of the week at the PGA Championship with his press conference, and things aren't looking good on the course either.

Rahm has quickly fallen into a hole with bogeys on three of his first five holes, including three in a row on Nos. 4-6. The Spaniard hasn't been able to get close on the green and his putter hasn't done him any favors either. Rahm is 4-over-par through six.

Scottie Scheffler cruising in solid start

Scottie Scheffler is showing early why he is the world No. 1-ranked player.

After his incredible eagle on No. 1, the 2024 Masters champion is in a groove after he picked up a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole to put him at 3-under-par and already launching himself into the top 10 of the leaderboard. Scheffler had great second shot on No. 4 to set up the birdie to put himself 13 feet away from the hole. It was a breeze with the putter, having no problem sinking the putt.

Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, others within striking distance

For the first round of a major championship, scores have been rather low for those players who teed off early at Valhalla. A brief fog delay caused tee times to be pushed back slightly, and the moist early conditions allowed many golfers to rack up the birdies.

In addition to Xander Schauffele's 9-under 62, fellow Americans Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala shot 65s to finish their opening rounds just three shots off the pace.

Other excellent early rounds included 5-under 66s from Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre. Among a group at 4-under 67 were Americans Ben Kohles, Brooks Koepka and Taylor Moore.

Scottie Scheffler tees off at PGA Championship, follows with epic shot

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler has a tough act to follow as he tees off at the second major championship of the golf season.

But after one hole, he appears to be up for the challenge.

Chasing Xander Schauffele's course record 62, the world's No. 1-ranked player safely launched his tee shot down the right side of the fairway on No. 1 ... and hit his approach shot into the hole for an eagle, from 167 yards out.

On ESPN's broadcast of the tournament, anchor Jim Nantz succinctly said, "Hello dad" as the ball took one hop into the cup.

Scheffler is playing in his first tournament since his wife Meredith gave birth to their son Bennett earlier this month.

Brooks Koepka soars on No. 7

The first eagle of the 106th PGA Championship belongs to defending champion Brooks Koepka.

Going for the green in two on the 590-yard par-5 seventh hole, Koepka hit his second shot from 211 yards out to within three feet of the hole. He converted the eagle putt to get him to 3-under for the tournament, then followed it up with a birdie to get to 4-under with one hole left to play.

Koepka has won five major titles in his career, including three wins in this event. He previously won the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019 in addition to last year.

Shortly after Koepka's eagle on No. 7, Bryson DeChambeau got one of his own on the same hole by holing out a 51-yard shot from the fairway.

Tiger finishes Round 1 at 1-over

Tiger Woods sits 10 shots off the pace at Valhalla after shooting an opening round of 1-over par.

On the same course where he won the 2000 PGA Championship (in a playoff over Bob May), Woods finished with back-to-back bogeys on holes 8 and 9 for a 72.

It was an up-and-down round of three birdies and four bogeys for Woods, who's seeking to tie the record of five PGA titles held by Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen.

Cam Smith gets his feet wet

Australian Cam Smith found himself in an interesting situation during his opening round that may seem quite familiar to many weekend duffers.

Tied for sixth at 3-under par, Smith's wayward drive on the par-5 seventh left him just to the right of the fairway landing area. The problem was, his ball was in the hazard and sitting in some shallow water.

Smith declined to take a drop and chose to play it out of the hazard … but not before taking off his shoes and socks to take his stance.

The Australian was able to make solid contact and get the ball back in play safely. His approach shot from 243 yards found the right rough, but he chipped it to within seven feet and sunk the putt for an unconventional par.

Xander Schauffele ties history with 62

Xander Schauffele has set a blistering pace at the 2024 PGA Championship, shooting a major championship record-tying 62 in his opening round to lead the tournament by three shots over Tony Finau.

Starting his round on the back nine, Schauffele – currently No. 3 in the World Golf Rankings – collected nine birdies without a bogey to get to 9 under par.

Finishing up with a two-putt par on the 415-yard, par-4 ninth hole at Valhalla Country Club, Schauffele's 62 tied the record he shares with Rickie Fowler (2023 U.S. Open) and Branden Grace (2017 British Open) for the lowest round ever in a men's major championship.

Tiger adds another birdie

Tiger Woods is back into red figures after notching his second birdie on the front nine at the par-5 seventh. (He began his round on hole No. 10.)

After a 300-yard drive into the landing area surrounded front and back by water, Woods found a fairway bunker on his second shot, but hit his approach shot to 13 1/2 feet and nailed the putt for birdie to get to 1-under for his round with two holes to play.

The birdie put Woods in a tie for 20th place.

Schauffele on record-setting pace

Continuing his early assault on Valhalla, Xander Schauffele has jumped out to a big lead with two holes to play in his opening round. With a two-putt birdie on the Par-5 seventh hole, Schauffele moved to an astounding 9 under par.

It was his fourth birdie on the front nine – after starting with five birdies on the back nine. If he birdies one of his two remaining holes and gets to 10-under, he would find himself in uncharted territory.

No player has ever shot 61 in any round of any major championship.

Schauffele leads Tony Finau and Robert MacIntyre by four shots.

Tiger back to even after birdie

Tiger Woods finally took advantage of a Par 3 on No. 3, using an iron to get within 5 feet of the cup and easily tap in for birdie. But no one has been able to stop Xander Schauffele (-7), who added another birdie at No. 4 and has a two-shot lead over Tony Finau, after he birdied 18 to close out his front nine.

Xander Schauffele moves to 6-under

Another hole and another birdie for Schauffele. He made good on the par 4, No. 2, while Rory Mcllroy hit the pin on the first hole of the back nine and tapped in for an easy birdie putt. McIlroy sits at 2-under, four shots off the lead.

Rory McIlroy struggling at end of front nine

Rory McIlroy showed a bit of frustration after his long putt for par on 17 went wide and settled for a bogey. He is 1-under and seeking his first major in 10 years, while Viktor Hovland's struggles on 17 also led to a bogey, and he is at 2-under. Three Americans are on top of the leaderboard, led by Xander Schauffele (-5), Tony Finau, who missed a birdie chance at 16, and Doug Ghim, who are one shot back.

Tiger finishes up and down front nine, Schauffele increases lead

Tiger Woods had one birdie and two bogeys in an uneven first nine holes and finds himself at 1-over after he settled for par on the Par 5 18th. Xander Schauffele is the leader at 5-under at the start of the back nine after another birdie on the 18th. Tony Finau is off to a torrid start as well and is one shot back after three straight birdies on 13, 14 and 15.

Xander Schauffele surges to PGA Championship lead

Schauffele, seeking his first major victory, birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 16 to take the outright lead at 4-under through his first seven holes. Doug Ghim and Jordan Spieth, who is off to a great start with birdies on three of his first four holes to start the day, are one shot back. After a bogey on 15, Tiger Woods, who has been playing with fire with his putting all morning, is back to 1-over for the round.

Golfers struggling with Par 3s, McIlroy, Spieth joins leaders at 2-under

With golfers usually making up scores when a hole is a Par 3, the early stages of Round 1 at the PGA are proving difficult. So far, only nine birdies have been made on the four Par 3 holes that have been played (No. 3, 8, 11, 14). But there have been 20 bogeys on those holes as well. Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, after his birdie on No. 13, Doug Ghim, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Jordan Spieth and Sahith Theegala are on top at 2-under.

Jumbled leaderboard early in first round

Through the early portion of the first round, no golfer has broken through to establish themselves as the one to beat. Doug Ghim and Xander Schauffele are the early leaders at 2-under, and there are nine golfers at 1-under, including Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald. Tiger Woods again settled for par on No. 13 and is still 1-over through three holes. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Tiger off to slow start

After Tiger settled for par on his first hole, his tee shot on the par 3 No. 11 went awry, and he had to settle for a bogey. Woods sits at 1-over, and his putting will be the key moving forward to see if he can take advantage of the multiple holes set up for easy scores.

Rory McIlroy starts with birdie

Xander Schauffele ties major championship scoring record with 62 to open 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla

For the second time in his career, schauffele has posted a 62 at a major; he's still seeking his first such victory.

xander-schauffele-2024-pga-championship-round-1-g.jpg

Xander Schauffele has done it again. Firing a 9-under 62 to open play at the 2024 PGA Championship, Schauffele grabbed hold of the lead in record-setting fashion. Schauffele's 62 ties for the lowest round ever scored in a major championship -- matching a mark he previously achieved -- while simultaneously setting a record as the lowest round in PGA Championship history.

The 62 is also a new competitive course record at Valhalla Golf Club. Schauffele clipped 18 prior instances of 63 being scored at PGA Championships and Jose Maria Olazabal's 63 at Valhalla in the 2000 playing of this event.

Thursday marked the second straight year Schauffele has scored 62 at a major as he did the same to start play at the 2023 U.S. Open. The Olympic gold medalist fired a 62 in Round 1 at Los Angeles Country Club last year to tie a mark set just moments before him by Rickie Fowler.

Schauffele is now the only man in the history of professional golf to shoot multiple rounds of 62 in majors. The feat has also been accomplished by both Fowler (2023 U.S. Open, Round 1) and Branden Grace (2017 Open, Round 3).

Coming off a disappointing finish at the Wells Fargo Championship last week in Charlotte -- in which Schauffele held the lead only to be usurped Sunday by Rory McIlroy -- the American was able to brush it off Thursday and look like his usual self in Louisville.

"It feels great. It's just Day 1, but someone tells me I'm going to shoot 9 under today, I'd for sure take it," Schauffele told ESPN after his round. "I've just been playing some really solid golf. Just been having a lot of close calls. To me and my team, we say, why not just keep chugging along?"

Despite the end result, Schauffele's day did not begin in ideal fashion as he failed to take advantage of his first hole, the par-5 10th. That was about his only mistake as birdies began to fly soon after. A tee shot from 215 yards on the par-3 11th settled 2 feet from the pin and set up the 30-year-old's first of the day. Conversions from 13 feet and 16 feet set up birdies on Nos. 13 and 15 before a laser approach put him in position for another on No. 16.

Schauffele capped his first nine with a routine birdie on the par-5 18th and saw him turn in 5-under 31. Already out in front of the pack, he kept his foot on the gas on the outward half of Valhalla.

A beautiful approach into the tricky par-4 2nd led to Schauffele picking up another birdie before taking to the short par-4 4th. Schauffele elected to hit driver and push the envelope on the hole, which proved to be the correct decision. Thanks to some added speed -- picked up this offseason through a concerted effort with his new trainer and swing coach -- Schauffele's tee ball came to rest just short of the green. A nifty chip resulted in his seventh birdie of the round.

Schauffele's eighth came on the next hole as a nice mid-iron allowed him to knock in another bid from inside 10 feet. He continued to saunter through the front nine of Valhalla without any signs of stress and got through the most difficult hole on the course, the par-4 6th, unblemished.

Shortly after, Schauffele needed two putts from 55 feet to kick in his ninth and final birdie of his round on the par-5 7th. A couple ho-hum pars put a bow on Schauffele's record performance and has now set the stage for a potential major championship breakthrough for arguably the best player in the world without one.

Last summer, Xander Schauffele matched the all-time low round in a major.

He matched it again Thursday at the PGA Championship, setting this event’s record low score in the process.

Schauffele opened in 9-under 62 at Valhalla Golf Club, matching his 62 from the opening round at last year’s U.S. Open (also shot that day by Rickie Fowler), a major record score that was first carded by Branden Grace at the 2017 Open Championship.

A week after finishing runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship – McIlroy played an eight-hole stretch in 8-under Sunday, en route to a five-stroke victory – Schauffele put his foot on the accelerator Thursday morning and didn’t let up. It gave him a three-stroke lead over Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala through the morning wave.

“I think I look at every tough spot now as another opportunity, try to flip it into a positive and make myself want to earn it versus getting scared of the moment,” Schauffele told PGATOUR.COM after his record start at the PGA. “Just embrace it, and really earn it and all the hard work you’ve been doing is worth it. Kind of taking that mentality on.

“I have been putting myself in some really good spots, I’ve been playing really good golf and there are obviously times when you’ll get a little uncomfortable. And there were a few times where I was a little uncomfortable on Sunday, and my perspective on that is slowly changing a little bit.”

Schauffele was plenty comfortable Thursday at Valhalla, hitting 12 of 14 fairways, 14 of 18 greens and needing just 24 putts. He ranked second in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and first in Strokes Gained: Putting through the morning wave, a potent combination.

Eighteen rounds of 63 had previously been recorded in the PGA Championship. No score of 62 had been carded at this event, which is now in its 106th playing.

“I’ll take 62 in a major any day,” Schauffele said Thursday. “It's a great start to a big tournament. One I'm obviously always going to take.”

Schauffele rewrote tournament history on Thursday, his opening round at Valhalla including nine birdies and nine pars. The San Diego State alum began on No. 10, rattling off birdies on Nos. 11, 13, 15, 16 and 18 to make the turn in 5-under 31. He added birdies at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 7, and he closed with a two-putt par at the par-4 ninth hole to secure the PGA Championship’s record low single-round score.

Schauffele is no stranger to hot starts at majors. He entered the week with a 69.81 scoring average in the opening round of majors, the lowest all-time career first-round scoring average in major championship play among those who have appeared in at least 25 majors (courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau). He has been a frequent contender at majors for nearly a decade, recording 12 top-10 finishes in 27 career major starts entering this week. This includes two runner-up finishes – 2018 Open Championship, 2019 Masters – but he has yet to win a major championship. His week in Kentucky couldn’t have started much better, as he looks to change that.

The only player to shoot 64 or better during a PGA Championship round at Valhalla GC was Jose Maria Olazabal, who carded a 63 (9-under that year) in the third round of the 2000 PGA Championship. A dozen other players have shot 65 here, including eight different players in 2014.

Schauffele’s round Thursday is one to remember. Now he aims to convert it into his first major title.

“I think not winning makes you want to win more, as weird as that is,” Schauffele said Thursday. “For me, at least, I react to it, and I want it more and more and more, and it makes me want to work harder and harder and harder. The top feels far away, and I feel like I have a lot of work to do. But just slowly chipping away at it.”
