Buffett performs in Tulsa OK

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band continued their “Songs From St. Somewhere” tour on Thursday night at the BOK Center in Tulsa OK. The set list from the show is now available. Some changes to the set list included “Tulsa Time” (Don Williams) and “This Land is Your Land” (Woody Guthrie cover).

Tulsa World has a review of the show: “ Parrotheads brave weather for Jimmy Buffett concert ”

Thousands braved bitter cold and slick roads to party in downtown Tulsa on Thursday. Buffett fans, known as Parrotheads, are famous for their devotion to the singer and turned out in big numbers for Buffett’s first show at the BOK Center.

“Hello, sunny Tulsa,” a barefoot Buffett exclaimed as his Coral Reefer band started playing “St. Somewhere” off Buffett’s newest album, “Songs From St. Somewhere.”

Buffett made it clear that this party was going on no matter what.

“This storm will pass and we’ll just have to wait it out here,” Buffett said, a plan many in the crowd were OK with. “You didn’t think I wasn’t coming, did you? I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”

Buffett is part of the fifth anniversary concert series at the BOK Center, celebrating five years since it opened its doors. BOK Center officials said that since before the doors even opened, they had been trying to get Buffett to town.

Jimmy Buffett (born December 25, 1946) is an American ‘gulf and western’, rock, surf, and country singer, songwriter, business man, and author, hailing from Pascagoula, Mississippi, U.S.

Having started his musical life playing the trombone in his high school band, Buffett moved on to play the guitar in his freshman year at Auburn University. With the release of his debut album “Down to Earth” in 1970, Buffet continued to grace the streets and beaches with his busking, honing his skills and developing the beach-bum persona he later became known for.

Jimmy Buffett’s second studio album “High Cumberland Jubilee” was lost by his label Barnaby, and didn’t appear until 1976. The singer-songwriter subsequently signed with ABC-Dunhill Records who issued the albums “White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean” in 1973, and the more thoughtful “Living and Dying in 3/4 Time” in 1974. However, it wasn’t until the 1977 album “Changes in Latitudes”, led by the Top Ten single “Margaritaville”, that Buffett truly became a household name for his tropically-themed soft rock.

By the mid-1980s, with dwindling chart sales but a devoted and prominent fan base dubbed the “Parrotheads”, Buffet would tour regularly, and later tried his hand club management and fiction writing. The live album “Feeding Frenzy” was issued in 1990, followed by the best-selling box set “Boats, Bars, and Ballads” in 1992. An album of original material “Fruitcakes” became one of Buffett’s fastest-selling albums, and paved the way for the almost-as-successful “Barometer Soup” in 1995 and “Banana Wind” in 1996.

Towards the end of the millennium having worked on a musical adaptation of the Herman Wouk novel “Don’t Stop the Carnival”, Buffet released “Beach House on the Moon” and “Live: Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday”. After creating his own label Mailboat and releasing a string of concert recordings, Buffet returned with new material, issuing “Far Side of the World” in 2002. The ever-popular musician went on to release the album “License to Chill” in 2004, “Take the Weather with You” in 2006, and “Buffett Hotel” in 2009.

Live reviews

Jimmy Buffett puts on an amazing show! From the second you get there you're surrounded by some of the most colorful people you'll ever see. Everybody brings their own bit of Margaritaville with them. Some first time attendees walk around bearing "Buffett Virgin" signs. From cars turned into boats, to homemade beaches, to bartenders throwing snowballs, to men in coconut bras, the parking lot party is best described as a drunken free-for-all fueled by tropical drinks. You will see things there that you will never see anywhere else. There is no party like a Jimmy Buffett tailgate party. Once inside, make sure to watch out for beach balls, because they will be flying everywhere. Once the concert starts, Buffett does not disappoint. The man is lively and exciting, jokes with the crowd, and obviously loves what he does. Only at one of his concerts will you ever see thousands of grown adults all pretending to be sharks for the song "Fins." Buffett's back-up, The Coral Reefer Band is fantastic. Nadirah in particular has an unbelievable voice, and the amazing steel drum playing will immediately bring you down to some far away island. Mr. Buffett keeps the setlist interesting with a mix of old favorites ("Cheeseburger in Paradise" in particular brings a huge response from the crowd) new songs, and even a few covers. His cover of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" is an old throwback, but Buffett has recently taken to performing Zac Brown Band's "Free." This song especially is a feel-good, magical one. In short, a Jimmy Buffett concert is one of the best, most unbelievable experiences a person can have, and makes for a night you'll never forget. Fins up!

Jimmy Buffett July 8, 2017, Riverbend Music Center, Cincinnati

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

This was Buffet's 50th show at Riverbend. I've been to 25 of them by my count. My fiscal year begins and ends with the Jimmy Buffett show in Cincinnati. This year was the exception to the rule and it really had nothing to do with Jimmy Buffett. Riverbend allowed so many tailgaters in who had no tickets or intention of going to the show, That when actual ticket holders started showing up at 6 PM, there was no place for us to park. So Riverbend had no choice but to just let us sit on the bridge. From the time we arrived and could actually see the Riverbend, it took us three hours to get in and finally find a parking spot. But then they didn't even have personnel out there trying to help concert goers get in and get parked. They had abandoned everyone. Drivers were left to unload all of the passengers and continue on in the motionless parking line. Always thought I would go to Jimmy Buffett shows until he quit touring, But after this, I will not be attending another Jimmy Buffett show at Riverband ever again. I pay too much money to miss half the show. If he tours next year, I will check him out somewhere that has a better grasp on their parking situation.

Veteran country rocker Jimmy Buffett still has the ability to transport audiences to his private paradise island with his surf style music. Well into his 60s, the star knows the influence that his easy listening music has had on people's lives and the crowd is made up of original fans as well as new coverts who may have been brought up listening to Buffett's music.

Jimmy is completely at ease onstage and performs with a huge smile on his face throughout the show. The audience's enthusiasm spurs him on as they sing, cheer and applaud throughout. There are roars of approval for fan favourites including 'Come Monday' and 'Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes'. The musician still has an impressive amount of skill with his guitar and his supporting band are also incredibly well trained.

The set is only punctuated by Jimmy himself conversing with his crowds with stories and meanings of songs. He has of course been touring for over four decades so he knows how to tease the crowd before he allows his band to begin the introduction to 'Margaritaville'. This is a wonderfully inclusive conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable trip to Buffet's paradise.

I first saw Jimmy Buffet back in 1993. I was 14 years old and it made a huge impression on me at that age.

Back then the parrot heads were much younger, wilder, and drunker. It was like a mini mardie gras and it was tons of fun. I saw him again this year and their was a huge crowd but the parrot heads were older and more toned down. It still had all of the same kinds of things but just more toned down. You didn’t see as many flashing women or really drunk people. But the music was still great.

He did all of his hits, the same ones he has been doing for almost 4 decades. He sounded great and he did show some age. He played for more than two hours and ended with a cover song of “Brown Eyed Girl”. His band sounded great and they were really tight.

He continues to attract tons of people to his shows and does not have any problem selling out shows every summer. It is really amazing that he can still do that considering he has not had any new hit songs in more than 20 years. But the old shows of the 1980’s and 1990’s are missed.

Great Show Saturday Night in Cigal in Paris, amazing athmosphere, Jimmy with his 14 piece Talented band Nailed it firmy to the mast with a great seletion of old and new songs including a great solo to end the night well worth the trip, Paris, sunny weekend,Parrotheads how could you not love it cant wait until next year, Gerry

the concert was absolutely awesome. the venue was good as well. Jimmy Buffett still can keep people on their feet and involved in the shows!! I would go again. The crew members for the venue were very organized and knowledgeable of the facility. We got in to our seats without a problem. It was good that there were plenty of restrooms on all floors.

Found out Jimmy was to be in concert on Maui 3 days after we were supposed to leave. Sacrificed my plane ticket, booked more hotel nights and got close-up seats. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

Got home to find he was playing in Seattle! Booked tickets for 4 and had the time of our lives! Two Buffett concerts in a month? A dream come true! Come back, Jimmy!!!

I have wanted to see Jimmy Buffett since I first heard him 38 years ago. And I finally got the change at La Cigale in Paris - Excellent venue and excellent seating. The concert was amazing. He has a certain style and attracts a certain crowd that can't help but project a feel-good factor. He is still rocking. See you next year Jimmy

Jimmy did an outstanding job in KC. He played many songs i had not heard at his concerts before. He did a duet with Carolina Jones Trip Around the Sun which is one of my favorites. He filled the house and the Parrotheads were rocking. Jommy never fails to play the standards everyone knows & loves. Just glad he is still touring!

Rarely in the Hollywood Bowl’s 100-plus years has the storied venue hosted the sheer star wattage from different fields that filled its stage Thursday night, April 11.

The occasion was Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett, a chance for the late singer’s friends in the music and movie worlds (plus a couple of Hall of Fame athletes) to show their love for the tropical troubadour, who died last year of skin cancer at 76. It was the kind of night where you see and hear things you don’t usually see or hear.

“I want to set the record straight — I was the one who smoked a bowl with Jimmy on the roof of the Vatican,” actress Jane Fonda told the sold-out crowd, jokingly correcting a tall tale Woody Harrelson had spun earlier. Tennis legend John McEnroe kept the gag going later by claiming he and Buffett had sparked up on Wimbledon’s Centre Court.

While tales of the Pirate Laureate’s prodigious partying — both real and embellished — were a regular source of laugh lines, the evening’s emotional touchstone was Buffett’s humanity and generosity of spirit.

“Jimmy Buffett was a cool guy,” actor Harrison Ford said. “There will never be another like Jimmy. Usually, cool guys aren’t that nice. Jimmy was more than nice. He was kind.”

Jon Bon Jovi compared the life lessons he learned from Buffett to being “at the knee of the Jedi.” Added pro surfer Kelly Slater: “He was keenly aware that life is fleeting and we have to make memories while we’re here.”

Paul McCartney, the night’s final individual performer, summed it up this way: “Like everyone else on the bill has said, this was a great man.”

The night was also a celebration of the bond between Buffett and his legions of festively festooned fans, affectionately known as “Parrot Heads,” forged over countless bacchanalian summer tours. “Jimmy liked it best when everybody had a good time,” James Taylor told the crowd in a video he sent from Perth, Australia. “That was his gift.”

But what about the music, you ask? Stunning. Highlight followed highlight over nearly three and a half hours. Again, things you don’t normally see or hear.

  • Brandi Carlile pouring her full passion into “Tin Cup Chalice” and “Come Monday,” two of Buffett’s most introspective ballads.
  • Jackson Browne delivering a tender reading of “He Went to Paris,” which actor Will Arnett introduced as “Bob Dylan’s favorite Jimmy Buffett song.”
  • Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro shredding through a medley of “We Will Rock You” and “My Guitar Gently Weeps,” using distortion and delay to great effect.
  • Dave Grohl climbing behind the drum kit to power a Zac Brown-led version of Van Morrison’s “Brown-Eyed Girl,” a staple cover in Buffett’s set lists.
  • Snoop Dogg getting a largely AARP-aged audience on its feet and singing along with “Gin & Juice.”
  • McCartney teaming up with the Eagles for an elegiac version of “Let It Be,” a song the Beatle said he personally sang to Buffett days before his death.

Those weren’t the only strong turns. Kenny Chesney, whose “no shoes” vibe is a direct descendent of Buffett’s Caribbean country style, tore through “Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude.” Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit — credited with coining the term “Parrot Head” during his stint with Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band — did a cheeky rendition of “Volcano,” changing a lyric to add political commentary. J.D. Souther’s scorching take on “Southern Cross” had the entire venue standing.

Sheryl Crow, who was a back-up singer for Buffett early in her career, had fun with “Fins,” leading fans in the well-known choreography.

Through it all, the Coral Reefer Band provided tight backing, playing with purpose. The band’s singer-guitarist Mac McAnally served as the evening’s amiable MC and kicked things off by singing “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.”

The show cooked along through most of its first three hours until the Coral Reefer Band left the stage. After a video played of an absent Dave Matthews singing “Lonely Cruise,” the Eagles came on to do “Boys of Summer,” “Take It to the Limit” and “In the City” — a polished performance that seemed disconnected from the rest of the show and its intent. The transition time to set up for the Eagles’ mini-set also sapped the night’s brisk pace.

The tribute ended with the expected group sing-along of the Parrot Heads’ national anthem,”Margaritaville,” which sent fans out in an upbeat spirit.

Earlier in the show, before he sang “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” country singer Eric Church recalled a conversation with Buffett where the topic turned to mortality and legacy.

“He said, ‘You know, Eric, guys like us never really die. Because the songs live forever.’”

Inside Jimmy Buffett’s Tribute Concert: McCartney, Margaritas, and One Hell of a Parrothead Party

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

“Good evening, Hollywood-fucking-Bowl!” Paul McCartney exclaimed to the flock of Parrotheads gathered before him. A sold-out crowd had assembled in the famed Los Angeles venue on Thursday to celebrate the legacy of Jimmy Buffett at “Keep the Party Going,” a laid-back, one-night-only tribute show full of eclectic guests.

“I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy , and like everyone else on the bill tonight, I said, ‘This is one great man.’ He was generous. He was funny. He’d done just about everything in his life,” McCartney said, before launching into “Let It Be .” It was a song that McCartney said he’d played for Buffett at his home during the final week of his life. Buffett died in Sept. 1, 2023, at 76 after a battle with Merkel cell skin cancer.

Paul McCartney 'So Happy' With Beyoncé's 'Magnificent' Version of 'Blackbird'

This being a Buffett tribute, however, any poignancy took a backseat to the party. The show officially kicked off at 7 p.m., but in the Parrothead time zone, it was perpetually 5 o’clock somewhere. Outside the gates, a sea of fans had donned their best tropical shirts, captain caps, and the occasional parrot accessory to get the festivities started. Even security was wearing leis.

Along with the stacked musical lineup, “Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett” featured introductions — some via video, some in person —  from Dolly Parton, James Taylor, Woody Harrelson, Pat Riley, and Dave Matthews. Harrison Ford was there in the flesh.

“There is no other way to say it: There will never be another like Jimmy,” Ford told the crowd, before introducing the Zac Brown Band as “one of Jimmy’s favorite and most-frequent collaborators.” The group jammed through the new track “Pirates & Parrots,” out April 19, and their collab with Buffett “Knee Deep,” with Brown literally taking off his pants to play the song in shorts and a tee backed by Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.

Mac McAnally, a longtime member of the Coral Reefer Band, introduced Eric Church, who delivered one of the standout performances of the night, as well as one of Buffett’s finest quotes.

“Jimmy enjoyed living life more than any person enjoyed living life,” the country star said. “I can remember we were hiking one day and we were heading up this vista and we started talking about music and songwriting and our careers and his life and my life, and death. And, ‘You know, Eric,’ [Jimmy] said, ‘Guys like us, we don’t really die.’ He said, ‘because the songs live forever.'”

“And this one will,” Church said, as the opening chords to “Son of a Son of a Sailor” rang out over the Bowl and an image of a sailboat drifting along the water was projected on a screen behind the musicians. Later, a projection of the Arc de Triopmhe appeared behind Jackson Browne as he sang his stirring rendition of “He Went to Paris,” one of Buffett’s greatest cuts from 1973’s A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean .

In the latter half, the set list shifted to songs that Buffett wasn’t exactly known for: Snoop Dogg took the stage for a performance of “Gin and Juice,” alongside psychedelic visuals of Buffett in the 2019 Matthew McConaughey film The Beach Bum . And Pitbull appeared to perform his own “Don’t Stop the Party” before being joined by Jon Bon Jovi for “Thank God & Jimmy Buffett.”

Sheryl Crow, who delivered an audience-participation rendition of Fins,” recalled adventures with Buffett and being hired by him when she was “absolutely a nobody” to sing backup on his 1989 album Off to See the Lizard. “[Buffett] is, for me, the most beautiful illustration of what it means to be alive and awake, and absolutely present in every moment,” Crow said.

For the home stretch, Don Johnson — no stranger to pastels and warm-weather vibes from his Miami Vice days — called to the stage “a bunch of guys [they] used to hang out with back in the day” and introduced the Eagles. Led by Don Henley and Joe Walsh, the California icons played their own miniature set featuring Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” and the band’s “Take It to the Limit” and “In the City.” The Eagles hung around to back up McCartney on the Beatles’ “Let It Be.”

But there’s only one way a tribute to Buffett can end, however, and Sir Paul knew it. Grabbing a margarita, he joined the Coral Reefer Band and the tribute’s cast for a “Margaritaville” finale.

“Jimmy Buffett, get a big kick out of this,” McAnally said. “Raise a glass, show ’em how to do it.”
