Analysing Jumbo-Visma's 13-man Tour de France long list
A closer look at the riders in contention to support Roglic
Jumbo-Visma typically announce their Tour de France line-up before the turn of the year but, unlike the last few seasons, the team have decided to take a different approach for 2022.
Primož Roglič and 2021 sensation Jonas Vingegaard are set to take two of the eight spots, while a further four riders will be announced at the team’s 2022 presentation next week. Wout Van Aert will take one of those spots as he targets the green jersey but the final two riders are set to be confirmed later in the spring.
Cyclingnews looks over the 13-rider longlist and the riders in contention for a place come July as the team look to wrest the yellow jersey away from two-time winner Tadej Pogačar.
Primož Roglič
- Tours raced: 4
- Tour pedigree: Second in 2020, and three stage wins
Roglič, having recently signed a new long-term contract that will tie him to the team until the end of 2025, is the first rider on the team sheet. The Slovenian remains the man most likely to end Pogačar’s reign and, despite UAE once again strengthening in the off-season, Jumbo-Visma's collective are narrowly ahead when it comes to depth.
Roglič's record as a stage racer is plain for all to see, and had he not crashed out of contention in 2021 the race would have been a much closer affair. That said, the Slovenian will head into July as the underdog to Pogačar. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, with all the pressure and expectation set to build between now and the Grand Départ in Copenhagen, but Roglič has everything in his locker to win.
Jonas Vingegaard
- Age: 25
- Tours raced: 1
- Tour pedigree: Finished second in his first Tour de France
Last year’s GC revelation is set to return to the Tour de France in a protected role after his surprise second place in 2021. Whether Vingegaard is given the same level of protection and support as Roglič remains to be seen but, between now and the Grand Départ in his Danish homeland, he will have ample chance to solidify his role.
The route suits the 25-year-old but the opening week, as it proved last year, is fraught with pitfalls and obstacles. Having two leaders isn’t a bad position to be in at the start of a three-week if it’s managed professionally, but we also don’t know how Vingegaard will cope with the increased levels of pressure and expectancy that now rest on his shoulders.

His relationship with Roglič, which seems amicable, could be one of the most fascinating aspects in this year’s race. If the pair are both on form and try and gang up on Pogačar, it could be one of the best Tours we’ve had in recent years.
Wout van Aert
- Age: 27
- Tours raced: 3
- Tour pedigree: Six stage wins in three years and a contender for the green jersey
The Belgian will be at the start in Denmark and will line up as one of the favourites for the green jersey. A spell in the yellow jersey could be on the cards in the opening week given the early time trial and the cobbles that come on stage 5 but expect Van Aert to also play a valuable support role when required by his team.
The Belgian has never come across as the selfish type, so assuming that he and his team management are on the same page, this could be yet another hugely successful Tour for the rider. If the GC challenge fails for any reason then there’s probably no better plan B than giving Van Aert complete freedom.
Rohan Dennis
- Tours raced: 4
- Tour pedigree: Just one finish, although he does have a stage and a yellow jersey on his palmarès
Dennis’ arrival from Ineos Grenadiers is a major coup for the Dutch team as they look to replace Tony Martin as their super-domestique for Grand Tours. Dennis is, of course, more than a domestique, and he has the capacity to target time trials and small stage races at various points in the calendar, but his role in the Tour de France will depend on a number of factors.
A starting place isn’t guaranteed at this point and his record at the race contains just one finish from four starts. His last appearance ended in disarray when he left Bahrain-Merida mid-race and never pulled on their kit again. However, if Jumbo-Visma can manage his temperament then they have a world-class athlete at their disposal – see his support riding at the 2020 Giro d'Italia. With his focus last year being on the Olympics he didn’t get a ride in any of the Grand Tours, so there is an element of risk with any possible selection.
Robert Gesink
- Age: 35
- Tours raced: 10
- Tour pedigree: A former GC contender, Gesink is now the team’s veteran road captain
The legs might not be what they once were for a rider tipped as a potential winner during his heyday, but Gesink is nevertheless one of the most important riders on the team. His experience and calmness under pressure are vital for any potential Tour challenge, and his ability to shepherd leaders through both the medium and high mountains is almost second to none.
He may not have the kick of Sepp Kuss but his diesel-like ability to churn out kilometre after kilometre will be invaluable when the team looks to either attack or defend. He’s been with Roglič for each of his Vuelta a España wins, so there’s clearly respect and chemistry there, too. One of the most experienced Grand Tour riders in the world.
Steven Kruijswijk
- Age: 34
- Tours raced: 6
- Tour pedigree: Third in 2019 but has struggled for Grand Tour consistency in recent times
The experienced Dutchman might not be a viable plan B for leadership as he was at the start of 2020 when the team announced a trio of leaders, but he still has an important role to play when it comes to team responsibilities at the Tour.
Like Gesink, the 34-year-old has an incredible mountain pedigree, and his 12th place in the Vuelta last year demonstrated that his consistency is still in check when he’s fit and healthy. Injuries and bad luck have plagued him for the last couple of years but Kruijswijk, who hasn’t won anywhere close to the number of races his talent carries, would still walk into every single WorldTour squad's Tour line-up.
- Tours raced: 2
- Tour pedigree: Two impressive rides that include a 15th overall and a stage win last year
There has been talk of Kuss stepping up and leading a team in a Grand Tour but, assuming he doesn’t head to the Giro, the likely scenario will be that the American suits up for his typical super-domestique duties at the Tour before throwing his hat into the ring at the Vuelta a few weeks later.
The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best pound-for-pound climbers in the world with some key performances in the last few seasons and, while Gesink and Kruijswijk are both durable, it’s Kuss who is likely to be one of the last riders with Roglič and potentially Vingegaard in the mountains. With George Bennett no longer on the team, there’s more wiggle room and responsibility for Kuss in the coming years.
- Age: 26
- Tours raced: 0
- Tour pedigree: Yet to make his debut
Oomen has raced both the Giro and the Vuelta and has a top 10 in his locker from back in 2018 when he helped Dumoulin to second overall in Italy. However, a Tour spot has eluded him, despite his obvious talents.
It’s unlikely that Oomen is one of the six nailed-on starters at this point for the Tour and, with Dumoulin already targeting the Giro, the most plausible scenario is that Oomen links up with his former Sunweb leader for another tilt at the maglia rosa .
Tobias Foss
- Age: 24
The former Tour de l’Avenir winner had a breakthrough Giro in 2021 with ninth overall after George Bennett came down with an illness. The Norwegian looks like a solid Tour option for the coming years but the dilemma facing Jumbo-Visma will be whether the 24-year-old would learn more from racing for Dumoulin at the Giro or Roglič at the Tour.
With just one full Grand Tour under his belt, is he even ready for the Tour de France? There’s no point in rushing Foss at this point, so a Giro spot would make more sense.
Mike Teunissen
- Age: 29
- Tour pedigree: Won two stages (one was part of a TTT victory) and wore yellow in 2019
The Dutchman might not be an immediate candidate for a Tour de France spot but he’s certainly in the hunt given his track record and all-around ability. The former yellow jersey would be a crucial domestique in a tricky opening week when support around Roglič would be imperative, but it's Teunissen versatility that stands out.
The high mountains are not his forte but on flat roads, through crosswinds and the intermediate stages, he’s an ideal ally who can put himself at the full disposal of his teammates. If Van Aert needs any support going for green, then he should be there, too.
Tom Dumoulin
- Tours raced: 6
- Tour pedigree: Second overall in 2018 and three stage wins
The former Giro d’Italia winner is set to challenge for the maglia rosa once again this May but that doesn’t mean he’s not on the long list for the Tour de France. Even an 80 per cent Dumoulin would be an asset over three weeks, assuming he’s in the right frame of mind, but his place at the Tour would only be determined by his condition after his Giro d’Italia and whether Jumbo-Visma feel that the rider can take on back-to-back Grand Tours.
The team have stood by Dumoulin every step of the way since his sabbatical in early 2021 and any decision over a possible Tour place would be made according to whatever the circumstances were. There’s no way Dumoulin would be rushed towards the Tour.
Christophe Laporte
- Tours raced: 7
- Tour pedigree: The Frenchman has raced every Tour de France since 2015
Laporte might be a new arrival but that hasn’t stopped the Jumbo-Visma management from considering his availability for the Tour de France. The Frenchman has been a regular feature in his home Grand Tour every year since 2015 and, while he has come close on several occasions to winning a stage, he would be at the race in order to work and protect his leaders.
He doesn’t have the climbing pedigree of some of the other riders on this list but, during a difficult opening week, he could be crucial when it comes to keeping leaders safe and sound. Not one of the first names on the list but certainly an option.
Tiesj Benoot
- Tours raced: 5
- Tour pedigree: Yet to win a stage but has come close over the years
Another newcomer but still a rider with a strong Tour back catalogue. A Tour spot would mean an entirely different role for Benoot, who has spent his time at Lotto Soudal and DSM attacking and hunting down stage wins. At Jumbo he would need to curtail those ambitions and focus almost entirely on Roglič and Vingegaard.
That wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing; a rider such as Michał Kwiatkowski – a stronger GC rider – has made a career out of focusing on the Classics and then supporting his GC teammates over three weeks. Benoot is a better climber than a few of the domestique options on this list, which puts him in the hunt.

Ride Your Dreams: Jumbo-Visma's Annual Tour de France Jersey Design Revealed
Starry-eyed children and big cycling dreams are some of the designer’s inspirations.
Only one person gets to wear the yellow jersey during the Tour de France, which is why, around this time every year, Dutch team Jumbo-Visma—whose primary team color is yellow—unveils their one-off Tour jersey.
This year’s jersey features a mostly-black design, dotted with twinkling stars. At the upper center of the jersey, above the team’s bold logo, is a hexagon, inside which is a map of France. That hexagon is matched on the back of the jersey, featuring a constellation pattern.
The jersey will be worn by Jumbo’s men’s and women’s teams in this year’s Tours. The men’s race starts July 1 in Bilbao, Spain. The Tour de France Femmes starts on July 23 in Cleremont-Ferrand, France.
The inspiration for the jersey comes from an antique bicycle-themed ride at Efteling called “The Vélodrome,” which, according to the press release from Jumbo-Visma announcing the jersey, “tells the story of a little cyclist who, under a sparkling starry sky, breaks free from the merry-go-round called The Vélodrome and, as if in a dream, finishes on the Champs-Élysées.”
“The shirt’s starry sky reflects the power of dreams, framed by elegant gold embellishments,” the release continues.
The fairytale was written by the one of Efteling’s designers, Sander de Bruijn, who said, “It is a dream and an honor to design the Team Jumbo-Visma cycling jersey for the upcoming Tour de France. The underlying theme, ‘Believe in your dreams,’ is one of the best stories and messages we can share with children and all spectators of the upcoming Tour de France through the creation of ‘The Vélodrome: Ride your Dreams.’”
Jumbo fans around the world can not only order their own Vélodrome jersey , but if they do so before May 1, they can personalize their jersey with a moment in their own life that will be reflected in a corresponding star map on the back of the jersey.
Jumbo is still waiting to hear word from the UCI as to whether each of their riders can carry a personal star chart on their jerseys throughout the Tour.
Just as the dark design of last year’s jersey —which was inspired by the Dutch masters Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh—distinguished Jumbo riders from the yellow jersey, so too will this year’s dark theme.
Of course, if Jonas Vingegaard repeats his victory from 2022, as he and his Jumbo-Visma teammates hope, it won’t make much of a difference.
“Winning the Tour de France last year was a long-cherished dream come true,” said Jumbo-Visma’s general manager, Richard Plugge. “And, of course, we will do everything we can to make our dreams come true once again.”

What to know: jumbo-visma’s tour de france team, if there's any year that team ineos is going to be unseated from its tour throne, it's this one. and jumbo-visma could be the team to make it happen..

This year’s Tour de France could be the year Jumbo-Visma becomes the new Ineos.
The Dutch team motored its way through the summer schedule of pre-Tour races, pulping Egan Bernal and his Ineos Grenadier teammates.
Boasting a roster stacked with arguably the hottest riders in cycling right now in Primož Roglič , Wout van Aert and Sepp Kuss , Jumbo-Visma should have been going into the Tour with the wind at its sails. However, the sheen was taken off their awesome August in one disastrous day at the Critérium du Dauphiné earlier this month when crashes left Roglič battered and bruised, and co-leader Steven Kruijswijk unable to start in Nice this weekend.
On the flipside, Team Ineos was not to full strength through the Dauphiné and Tour de l’Ain as it carried the weight of off-form Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas. With both now axed from the Tour team , and Giro d’Italia champion Richard Carapaz drafted in, the British team goes into the Tour with stronger legs and a new, fresh face – leaving the balance of power between the two superteams finely balanced.
Will Jumbo-Visma and its fleet of powerful climbers be able to repeat their early-August feats when it counts most? Is Roglič fully recovered from his injuries? And will superstar Colorado boy Kuss be able to live up to the hype in his Tour debut?
There’s no doubt about it, whether they’re winning or losing, expect Jumbo-Visma to be in the spotlight from here on in.
- No, Roglič isn’t peaking too soon
- Kuss ‘leaving personal ambition at home’ for debut Tour de France
- What to know: Ineos Grenadiers’ Tour de France team
Tom Dumoulin, Primož Roglič, Sepp Kuss, George Bennett, Wout van Aert, Tony Martin, Robert Gesink, Amund Grøndahl Jansen
Even without Kruijswijk, the Dutch team boasts one of the most powerful eight in the Tour de France, pushing, if not surpassing, Team Ineos Grenadiers for strength and swagger.
While Roglič only has one grand tour title to his name, he’s looked almost unbeatable in the restarted season to date, knowing when to play his cards and knowing when to sit in the comfort of his Jumbo-Visma express mountain train.
However, his Dauphiné injury and recovery battle could rest heavy in his legs. Reports conflict as to how the Slovenian is faring, with the rider himself saying “ right now I am not feeling my best ” earlier this week, and the team telling AD.nl the very next day that “he is doing fine” and back to full training. Whether he is fully fit for Saturday or not, the last week will be far from the preparation the Slovenian had been hoping for.
Next to Roglič is the team’s new star, Tom Dumoulin . With a Giro d’Italia victory and second-place in both the Giro and Tour to his name, the Dutchman knows what it takes to win over three weeks.
Dumoulin looked nearly back to his best through the Tour de l’Ain and Dauphiné after 14 months away from racing with injury and illness. Provided his final preparations at altitude in Tignes went to plan this past week, we could see him back to the level that saw him rise to grand tour glory in 2017 and 2018, and a valuable sidekick for Roglič and second card for his team.
Away from the team’s leaders, Jumbo-Visma’s Tour team has form and momentum coming out of its eyeballs.
Coloradan Kuss has proven himself to be one of the best climbers in the world through August’s pre-Tour race block, and Wout van Aert has shown he can do almost anything he turns his eye to, whether it be winning on the gravel climbs of Strade Bianche, the last-ditch sprint of Sanremo, or a reduced bunch kick at the Dauphiné.
The pair make for two significant aces up Jumbo-Visma’s yellow and black sleeve.
While Kuss has been commanding all the attention in the past month, George Bennett has also been showing himself to be one of the top mountain domestiques out there right now, floating his way through the mountains at the Tour de l’Ain while having the versatility to take second-place at Il Lombardia.
Together with ever-reliable and massively-experienced Robert Gesink, Kuss and Bennett make up a formidable fleet of helpers for Roglič and Dumoulin, more than able to win stages themselves, and able to “do an Ineos” with their collective strength in the mountains.
It’s not all about the climbers though.
Jumbo-Visma rounds out its roster with Amund Grøndahl Jansen, the late replacement for Kruijswijk, and the massive motor and wise head of Tony Martin. Despite being the least-known name on the team, former Norweigan national champion Grøndahl Jansen has two Tours already to his name and a big engine to help Martin control the bunch.
The post-COVID season was going great for Jumbo-Visma – until it wasn’t. The crash-riddled fourth stage of the Dauphiné turned its trio of leaders into a duo, and left Roglič reeling and in a late battle for form.
While the team may have the collective strength to make do without Kruijswijk, the question mark over their Slovenian star could prove pivotal in how the Tour de France plays out. Roglič won’t be able to cruise through a snoozey opening week of sprint stages as he nurses himself back to health, and needs to be on the ball from as early as the mountains of Nice in stage 2.
The intrigue around Roglič stretches beyond the masses of road rash and bruises he picked up in the Alps earlier this month.
The 30-year-old was last on the type of imperious form he’s shown in the past month shortly before the wheels came out from underneath his Giro d’Italia campaign in 2019, where he flew high for two weeks before losing his grip on victory to cling on for a consolation third place. While Roglič and his team are undoubtedly older and wiser after scooping victory at the Vuelta a España last summer, the memory continues to nag at the back of the mind.
It’s not all about the Slovenian though – Dumoulin looked nearly back to peak form earlier this month, and if he continues his upward trajectory, will have the legs and the experience to mark himself as one of the top contenders behind five-star favorites Roglič and Bernal.
If there’s any year that Team Sky / Ineos / Ineos Grenadiers is going to be unseated from its Tour de France throne, it’s this one.
Three weeks ago, the balance of power was firmly shifted toward the dominant Dutch outfit. However, with Ineos bolstered and Jumbo-Visma battered, the scales could tip one way or the other in the 21 days of explosive, ruthless racing on tap for this year’s Tour.
Buckle your seatbelt, it should prove one heck of a watch.

Jumbo-Visma's Tour de France documentary 'All-in' has a release date
Jumbo-Visma have worked throughout 2022 to win the Tour de France and the mission, in which the Dutch team put their full focus, has been a success. Behind the scenes there was a camera crew following the whole story over the course of the preparation and the race itself, and the 'All-in' documentary will be released on the 1st of March.
The documentary follows the story of Jumbo-Visma from December 2021 to the 2022 Tour de France. It is a six-part docuseries which reveals the insides and background work in preparation for the Tour, in which Jonas Vingegaard took a brilliant win after cracking Tadej Pogacar on the Col du Granon on stage 11 and then resisting all the subsequent offensives.

Besides Vingegaard's success, Wout van Aert has conquered the points classification and the team has taken six stage wins, besides the many days in the yellow jersey. The series will show the likes of these two but also Primoz Roglic, Christophe Laporte, Sepp Kuss and all those involved in the conquest of the race.
“It results in a revealing document in which nothing remains secret," Prime have said in a statement. "The fierce discussions on the bus, doubts in the hotel room, the pain of losing and the sweet taste of winning: everything is in the picture."

UCI WorldTeam
Jumbo-Visma
Formerly Rabobank, Superconfex and Kwantum, as well as a host of others since starting life in 1984, Team Jumbo-Visma is the second longest running team at the top of the sport, beaten only by Movistar, which began as Reynolds in 1980. Over the past couple of years, the Dutch outfit have emerged as the new successors to Team Sky/Ines and cemented their position as the best team on the men’s WorldTour.
Their meteoric success isn’t just attributed to their superstars Wout van Aert, Jonas Vingegaard, and Primož Roglič, but also their entire team structure - from part-time staffers to full-time managers - and newfound focus on emerging young talent. Last year the team didn’t just achieve their big goal of winning the Tour de France, they smashed it out of the park.
Through the leadership of Vingegaard and Van Aert, but also the efforts of riders like Christophe Laporte, they came home with the yellow, green and polka-dot jerseys, as well as six individual stage victories. They’ve set an even loftier goal for the 2023 season: shepherd Vingegaard to a second Tour title and place Roglič on the top step of the Giro d’Italia’s podium.
On top of that, the team is also on the hunt for a Monument and, with the likes of Van Aert, Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benootm and new-recruit Dylan van Baarle on their roster, will be able to muster one of the great one-day racing squads the sport has ever seen. Looking ahead to the future, the team has snapped up one of Great Britain’s hottest young prospects in Thomas Gloag.
They’ll be hoping that the London-born lad can hit the ground running in 2023 and, before long, prove to the world that he’s a worthy successor to Vingegaard and Roglič.

It may look simple—get to the line first—but World Tour cycling is as complex as Grandmaster-grade chess. From raceday strategy to tactics in the bunch, every move is considered, calculated, and executed in pursuit of victory. At a time when many bikes are becoming general-purpose tools, our 5-level bikes remain precision instruments, engineered to meet the demands of the best riders and most challenging terrain.
Undisputedly the fastest bike
In the 2022 Tour de France, the S5 propelled Wout to the highest ever Points Classification score of the modern era. At 480, Wout was some 194 points ahead of his nearest rival—tangible proof that Cervélo keeps delivering aerodynamic gains to our World Tour athletes.
For the P5 we focused entirely on aero performance—within the boxes defined by the UCI, anyway. We applied years of experience in engineering the fastest aero bikes and real-world testing with our pro athletes. The result is a bike that pushes the boundaries in every way possible.
What Goes Up Must Come Down
R5 has one job—get to the top, fast. But for all the glory and fanfare that comes with a summit finish, they’re rarely the only climb of the day. And while a race isn’t usually won on a descent, they can certainly be lost. A climbing bike that can’t carve a hairpin is a bit like a cup of decaf coffee.
After last year's successes, ambitions are big again. Sportive director Merijn Zeeman says, "We exceeded our wildest dreams last year with six stage victories, the polka dot jersey, and most importantly, the green and yellow jersey. This year we are dreaming big too. Our ambition is to bring the yellow jersey back to Paris. We have a super strong team led by our leader Jonas Vingegaard, and we believe in our plan. Winning the Giro has been a dream come true for us this season. Our riders are prepared for a double at the Tour.”

Col de Joux Plane
A relative late comer to the Tour, the Joux Plane first featured in the 1978 race quickly building up a fearsome reputation. Since then it’s been the backdrop to plenty of fireworks putting the great French champion Laurent Fignon into difficulty in 1983 and Lance Armstrong well and truly against the ropes in 2000.
Montée D'Avoriaz
Climbed officially for the first time during the 1975 Tour de France, this wide and famous road leading up to the resort of Avoriaz provides endless opportunities to enjoy the mountain views at an average gradient of 6%.
Col de la Joux Verte
This legendary col has featured in the Tour de France seven times. Watch out when going through Les Lindarets, as it is not unusual to find herds of goats nonchalantly occupying the road.
Lac des Mines D'or
Located at the bottom of the Manche Valley, about 15 minutes from the center of Morzine, this small bucolic lake benefits from a very pleasant environment conducive to walks with its passes, mountain pastures and coniferous forests that surround it.
Col D'Encrenaz
Peaking at 1,433m, the col de l’encrenaz is a lesser-known pass. Easily accessible from Les Gets, its ascent is spread over more than 6 km with an average gradient of over 8% and in some places 10%… short, but intense! ideal for a short ride around chéry or for a longer loop on the La Ramaz side for climbers.
Col de la Ramaz
14 km long with sections at more than 10% and an average climb of 6.8%, La Ramaz is a must-ride pass for all cycling enthusiasts.

Jumbo-Visma managed to win all three Grand Tours in the same year, with three different riders claiming victory in the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France, and the Vuelta a España. Not even the dominant Team Sky achieved such a feat back in their heyday. So, what exactly drives their consistent success?
