Kuromon Market 黒門市場

Kuromon Ichiba marketplace

A traditional marketplace filled with tantalizing scents, foods and pure Osaka energy

Stalls of fresh fish and produce line the long, narrow alley of the Kuromon Ichiba, an old-style marketplace in Osaka's Namba district. Visitors to the market carefully sort through the offerings to the sound of yells from the fishmongers promoting their catch.

The sharp scent of kimchee and the colorful arrangements of fish, meats and produce provide a powerful sensory experience.

How to Get There

You can get to the market by train and a short walk.

Kuromon Ichiba is a five-minute walk southwest from Nippombashi Station, and a 10-minute walk directly east from Namba Station. Upon crossing Sakaisuji Avenue, look for the large, multicolored sign that says Kuromon Market.

The 170 shops along Kuromon Ichiba specialize in fish, meat and produce. This market first came into prominence during the end of the Meiji period, and was named Kuromon (Black Gate) after the gates of the nearby Emmeiji Temple.

Kuromon Market

kuromon market tours

One of the numerous charms of the market is the way in which many of its shops not only sell larger food quantities for later consumption, but also smaller portions that can be eaten then and there. Some of the foods on offer are grilled seafood including crab legs and oysters, yakitori , sea urchin , sushi , eel , seasonal fruits , and the street food staple takoyaki .

Note that Kuromon Market can get crowded. When eating street food, make sure not to walk while eating, not to obstruct the flow of traffic, to properly dispose of your garbage and to handle your food carefully so not to soil the clothes of bypassers. The inconsiderate behavior of some tourists has been a cause of displeasure among some locals.

What's included

Try osaka's "must-eat" street food, takoyaki at kuromon market.

Have you heard of a Japanese street food called, "Takoyaki"? It's a small rounded ball snack made of wheat-flour based batter with a piece of octopus inside. After shaping it roundly with a mold, people put savory sauce and some bonito flakes on top. This Takoyaki is originally from Osaka and that's why we want you to try the best Takoyaki in this Osaka walking tour!

Have a taste of local favorite foods while walking through Kuromon Market and Dotonbori street

This tour will be an excellent option for you if you'd like to try different kinds of Japanese food in one place! Kuromon Market has a history of over 100 years and features more than 130 shops and stalls. With so many options, deciding what to try can be challenging. But don't worry; we'll stop by to sample local favorites, including fresh seafood, hot-pot dishes, and more.

After sampling foods, we'll head to a street called Doguyasuji Street. This street has contributed significantly to earning Osaka its title as "the Kitchen of the Nation," offering a wide range of kitchenware, tableware, and cooking equipment. These items cater not only to individuals but also to professionals. You'll discover unique and practical souvenirs for family and friends who enjoy cooking. Following that, we'll stroll around Dotonbori Street to indulge in more Osaka local foods!

Kuromon Market: Osaka’s Popular & Historic Marketplace

Get to know more about "Osaka's Kitchen"

Kuromon Market

Kuromon Market (黒門市場) , or “Kuromon Ichiba” , is a 580m-long market street located in Osaka’s Chuo ward.

Also known as “Naniwa no Daidokoro”(浪速の台所), which means “Osaka’s Kitchen”, this market has a history of over 190 years and has survived large fires and war attacks.

Kuromon Market is one of the largest markets in western Japan, having over 180 shops, stores, and restaurants.

Nowadays, it has become one of the “must visit” places in the area for foreign visitors, so much so that you will find more foreign visitors than Japanese visitors.

I will show you in this article about this popular market, including its history, recommended tours, how to get there, and interesting spots around the venue.

*Please note that this article contains affiliate links.

What is Kuromon Market

Kuromon Market

As I previously stated, Kuromon Market has a long history that dates back to the mid-Edo period.

The market was first called “Enmyoji Market” because there was a nearby Buddhist Temple called “Enmyoji”(圓明寺). Fishermen and merchants would gather in front of this temple, and that’s the origin of this market.

This temple had a big black gate and that is why the market came to be known as “Kuromon Market” (“Kuromon” literally means “Black gate”). Enmyoji was destroyed by a huge fire back in 1912 so it is not there anymore, but the name of the market stuck.

The market also was half-destroyed during WWII but was rebuilt by the community.

The market used to be composed of shops selling mainly fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, and sweets. At the beginning of the 2010s, more restaurants, Izakaya, and cafes started to open and it is said that this boosted the popularity of the market for foreign visitors.

What to do & see at Kuromon Market

Yakitori served at Kuromon Market

Kuromon Market has many different types of shops and restaurants, but the main attraction is still the fresh fish shops. About a quarter of the shops in the market are specialized in this. Restaurant chefs and homeowners come to get their supplies here because of the high-quality and freshness of the seafood that you can find here. Hence the nickname “Osaka’s Kitchen”.

Other than Fresh fish, you can also find shops for fresh vegetables and fruits as well as various kinds of sweets. One of the things that make this market popular is the fact that most of these shops will prepare and serve you their food for you to try right on the spot!

Stalls at Kuromon Market

The market also has several clothes and shoe shops as well as many restaurants, cafes, and Izakaya. In other words, you can spend an entire day here if you wanted to.

Act Now or Miss Out: The 10 U.S. Cities Where Homes Are Selling Faster Than Anywhere Else

The spring housing market may be off to a rocky start , but that doesn’t mean buyers can take it easy if they hope to succeed in purchasing a home.

While homes nationwide spent a median of 50 days on the market in March, they’re selling in less than half of that time in certain places, according to the most recent Realtor.com® data for median days on the market in the 200 largest metropolitan areas.

These fast-moving markets are spread out across the country, excluding the South. Some of these places are affordable, such as Rochester, NY , which tied for No. 2 on our list and on our most recent hottest markets ranking , where buyers can score a home for a median of $279,900 in March. Others are among the most expensive in the country, such as Silicon Valley’s San Jose, CA , which also tied for the No. 2 spot, where the median home costs $1.48 million.

These places tend to have lower unemployment rates, says Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale . Several have strong tech industries as well.

“Many of them are fairly expensive markets,” says Hale. “When prices are high, it’s expensive to just let [properties] sit when you’re trying to sell.”

Four of these brisk real estate markets are in the Boston area. These metropolitan areas include Manchester, NH , the No. 1 metro on our list, which was named America’s hottest housing market 22 times over the past three years. The other Boston-area markets are Worcester, MA , at No. 4; Boston , at No. 5; and Springfield, MA , at No. 7.

“You’ve [also] got markets that are close to popular, large markets,” says Hale.

Manchester, about an hour northwest of Boston, “is a very competitive market,” says local real estate broker Pamela Young , of eXp Realty. “An agent will delay showings until the open house. People go to the open house, and there’s 70 people there. Typically, an offer will come in from the open house.”

About 70.1% of those looking for homes in the Manchester area are from other states, according to Realtor.com data . Roughly 20% were from Boston and its suburbs, while 10.6% were from Manhattan.

That’s because buying a home in the Manchester metro area, with a median list price of $549,000, is about 37% cheaper than in the Boston area, where the median home price was $879,950 in March.

Young has seen homes sell within four days of being listed. These properties are typically in good condition and priced below what they’re worth to create competitive bidding.

As the stock market has soared, more people have jumped into the San Francisco Bay Area housing market, competing for a very limited number of homes for sale, says Patrick Carlisle , chief market analyst for the Bay Area for Compass.

The Bay Area includes the priciest markets on our list, San Jose and San Francisco , which tied for sixth place.

“It’s the hottest the market has been since the pre-pandemic housing boom. It’s the home of Nvidia, Google, Apple,” says Carlisle. “When people feel a lot wealthier, they feel better about buying a new home.”

So where do buyers need to pick up the pace? Here are the top 10 metros where homes are selling the fastest, plus how long it takes.

The Worthington Farmers Market is to open its summer season May 4 with a major honor to its credit. It has been voted by readers of USA TODAY as the nation's best farmers market.

They must be doing something right at the market that runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon along a stretch of High Street in Old Worthington. The Worthington Farmers Market topped outdoor markets that operate along the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida, and at an oceanfront park in Honolulu.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket had been voted No. 1 in USA TODAY's 10 best reader polls for three straight years. This was the first year Worthington's market was nominated by a panel of travel writers and other experts.

More farmers markets: When do area farmers markets open? Here's a guide to where and when to go

The result of reader votes were announced today.

"Nearly 100 vendors from the Columbus area converge for the year-round Worthington Farmers Market that adapts to the seasons," USA TODAY wrote.

"In summer, May through October, farmers and producers of high-quality food and plants sell al fresco in the Old Worthington Historic District. The rest of the year, the market goes indoors at The Shops at Worthington Place."

The last indoor market takes place Saturday before it moves outdoors for summer.

Organizers say the Worthington Farmers Market, which began in 1987, should have its highest number of vendors ever this summer.

Mother Road Market in Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished at the top in national voting, while the Garage Food Hall in Indianapolis finished second.

Here’s why an underwear company partnered with pga tour caddies.

In a unique partnership within the world of professional golf, the underwear brand SAXX has teamed ... [+] with a group of caddies instead of players.

While professional golfers get the headlines and notoriety, it’s caddies that help with the dirty work behind the scenes and often out of the public eye. So perhaps it’s only fitting a men’s underwear brand, SAXX, chose to pursue a partnership with five PGA Tour caddies.

Two of the caddies – Geno Bonnalie, who works with Joel Dahmen, and John Elllis, who is teamed with reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark – have had greater visibility recently through their appearances on the Netflix Netflix docuseries about professional golf, Full Swing. The others to sign the group endorsement deal with SAXX, which first ventured into golf sponsorship a year ago, are Aaron Flener (J.T. Poston), John Limanti (Keith Mitchell) and Joel Stock (Will Zalatoris).

SAXX has been around since 2006 and, with its patented BallPark Pouch, lays claim to being the first pouch underwear brand in the market. When the brand looked at getting involved in golf from a promotional perspective, Vice President of Brand Marketing Shawna Olsten said SAXX gravitated toward pro caddies because they’re often overlooked on the course and could be featured in a fun, authentic way.

Perhaps not suprisingly, as part of the Ball Masters campaign there is plenty of publicity and marketing language tied in to one of the main caddie responsibilities: taking care of their player’s golf balls. And that, of course, plays into the primary responsibility of SAXX’s underwear.

While specific terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, the group of five pro caddies will receive more than $100,000 in total and wear not only the company’s underwear on the course, but its new chino-style shorts and cooling polo shirts.

The group of five PGA Tour caddies who teamed with SAXX will wear the brand's underwear, as well as ... [+] shorts and polo shirts, on the course during tournaments this year.

In addition, SAXX will hold a fan activation at an upcoming PGA Tour event, the Travelers Championship in Connecticut, and said it will donate $100 to the Testicular Cancer Foundation for every birdie made by the caddies’ players for the rest of the season. The company is also on a search to find golf fans to become honorary “Ball Masters,” with winning applicants getting free underwear for a year.

As part of its continued reach into the golf space, SAXX is targeting resort and hotel as one of its fastest emerging wholesale channels and has secured product placements at properties such as JW Marriott, Ritz Carlton and Fairmont that have well-known golf destinations. But uniquely teaming with caddies instead of players is proving to be the brand’s most high profile venture in expanding its visibility in the golf world.

It was in this area where the young Peter I found his small boat, which marked the beginning of the history of the Russian Navy. You can visit the version of his pottery workshop in Kremlin in Izmailovo complex.

Present cultural complex Kremlin in Izmailovo was founded by Alexander Ushakov and Marina Alexeyeva in 2003. The idea of establishing a center of Russian culture came to Alexander Fedorovich came in a dream when he, a descendant of the famous icon painter Simon Ushakov, saw the current Kremlin with its towers, bustling area and a pond, surrounded by children. Day by day, more and more details appeared, and the time has come to present architectural design governor.

Izmailovo played a big role in the history and culture of the country. In 1974 there was an exhibition of contemporary avant-garde artists - an event that marked the beginning of the emergence of modern art. A little later there was formed the famous Izmailovo Vernissage, where started the sale of exhibited paintings, antiques, books, and then the products of traditional Russian crafts.

Kremlin lies on a hill. And Izmailovo Kremlin was also planned to be built on the hills before the Olympics in 1980, but construction was frozen at that time. And so, in 1998, Alexander presented the municipal authorities a wooden tower in the Russian style, and soon signed a project for the construction of the whole complex - a wooden Kremlin.

According to an ancient Russian tradition, before building up a settlement, a temple goes first. Thus, the first building that came to life in Izmaylovo was the church of St. Nicholas of Myra, the patron of crafts and trade.

Surrounded by colorful towers rises the Palace of Russian meal - an architectural fantasy of Simon Ushakov and wooden palace in Kolomenskoye. The palace was decorated ty Izmaylovo’s  own masters, its roof is crowned with griffin as a symbol of knowledge and the emblem of the Romanov dynasty.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

Expert Picks: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Expert Picks

Change Text Size

How it works: Each week, our experts from PGATOUR.COM will make their selections in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf. Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winners: Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin (+2800) – Two proven TOUR winners that will be looking to channel some good Presidents Cup vibes. I remain impressed with Taylor’s grasp of clutch moments and think these two could have the right resolve in crunch time.
  • Top 10: Taylor Moore/Matthew NeSmith (+300) – An eye-catching price on a pair that finished T4 here each of the last two years and now has double the margin for error to still cash a placement bet.
  • Longshot: Dylan Wu/Justin Lower (+6600) – Lower is someone that I think is trending toward a breakthrough, including a T4 finish last week in Punta Cana while Wu has been largely solid this spring.
  • H2H: Taylor/Hadwin (-110) over Sepp Straka/Brice Garnett – Like Matt, I’m going to run it back with my winner’s pick in the head-to-head market as I’ll happily back the Canadians over a duo that has been more erratic in recent weeks, particularly Garnett outside of his Puerto Rico win.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winners: Schauffele/Cantlay (+450) – I’m not a fan of advocating these short odds but this smells of a few years ago where these two can play their way back into full confidence ahead of the rest of the season.
  • Top 10: Nicolai Højgaard/Rasmus Højgaard (+210) – One of three sets of brothers in the field this one brings firepower and winning gravitas from the DP World Tour. This is a preview for future Ryder Cups …
  • Longshots: Pierceson Coody/Parker Coody (+10000) – Let’s keep the brotherly love going. They have the teamwork side of things down pat and many a good judge from the lower leagues of golf suggest these two are stars in the making with clearly a good pedigree in the sport.
  • H2H: Højgaard/Højgaard (-110) over Matt Fitzpatrick/Alex Fitzpatrick – As good as Matt Fitzpatrick is, I’m still waiting to see more from Alex. He was awesome at The Open Championship last year but struggled a bit in this event leaving me to trust the Højgaards.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior content manager, Golfbet)

  • Winners: Schauffele/Cantlay (+450) – It’s one of those weeks where I feel like overthinking things is a bad idea. Both players have shown they are making progress towards getting back to the top of their games. Both are also hungry for a win. With so many random pairings out there, I’m willing to take the short odds.
  • Top 10: Collin Morikawa/Kurt Kitayama (+115) – Morikawa has gotten things figured out. Though Kitayama hasn’t lived up to the standards of his Arnold Palmer Invitational win presented by Mastercard last year, he’s playing consistent golf right now with a Top 40 in nine of his 10 starts in 2024.
  • Longshot: Nick Hardy/Davis Riley (+5500) – The winners here last year. They’ve proven they love the team format and will find that spark again.
  • H2H: Taylor/Hadwin (-110) over Straka/Garnett – The pair finished second last year. Taylor has a win this year. Hadwin has two top-fives in his last six starts.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winners: Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak (+4500) – It’s hard to find a pairing where both players are in good form. Novak was red hot in February and Thompson has had solid showings late March through early April. I trust the two of these guys will be able to lean on each other's ball-striking and put up a ton of birdies.
  • Top 10: Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith (+225) – Both of the Canadian pairings have a lot to like but I’ll lean Conners/Pendrith over Taylor/Hadwin.
  • Longshot: Garrick Higgo/Ryan Fox (+6600) – The hope is that Fox can motivate Higgo to put together some great scoring this week. Fox has obviously been great recently, it's Higgo who is the wild car. I trust the team format brings some good play out of him.
  • H2H: Thompson/Novak (+105) over Doug Ghim/Chan Kim – Running back my winner in the matchup (could come back to hurt me).
