Lady Gaga reveals trailer for Chromatica Ball concert film on HBO: 'I'm so excited'

Put your paws up, little monsters. It’s time to return to Chromatica .

On Wednesday, Lady Gaga dropped the trailer for “Gaga Chromatica Ball,” a concert film that pays tribute to the popstar’s 2022 Chromatica Ball tour . The nearly minute-long teaser shows an eye-popping sequence of Gaga performing onstage, taking on high-energy choreography in various striking outfits.

“I’ve always just said I was born this way,” Gaga says in the clip, referencing her 2011 hit "Born This Way."

The HBO film, directed and produced by Mother Monster herself, chronicles Gaga’s Chromatica Ball performance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, according to a press release .

“I’m so excited that we can finally share The Chromatica Ball film with the world,” Gaga wrote on X alongside the trailer. “This film chronicles a time of immense creativity…the fashion, the dance, the music. Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other—you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget.”

“Gaga Chromatica Ball” marks the second collaboration for Lady Gaga and HBO.

A concert film on Gaga’s 2009-2011 Monster Ball tour, “Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden,” aired in May 2011. The film, co-executive produced by Gaga, earned five Primetime Emmy nominations , winning an award for Outstanding Picture Editing.

“Lady Gaga is a complete powerhouse,” said Nina Rosenstein, executive vice president of HBO Programming, Late Night & Specials, in a statement. “She’s a once-in-a-lifetime artist who never holds back, and 'Gaga Chromatica Ball' puts her endless list of talents on full display. We’re thrilled to partner with her once again for this breathtaking concert special.”

The Chromatica Ball ran from July to September 2022 in support of Gaga’s sixth studio album “Chromatica.” Released in 2020, the dance-pop LP debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned Gaga a Grammy Award for best pop duo/group performance for “Rain on Me,” a collaboration with Ariana Grande .

“Here’s the truth—no matter where life or my career has taken me, my time with you always is a path back to a very powerful part of myself,” Gaga wrote to fans on X. “I hope you will feel seen when you watch this film. And know that I edited it carefully to honor you.”

Lady Gaga finally revives Chromatica Ball tour with new 2022 concert dates

More than two years after announcing the Chromatica tour, Gaga will finally hit the road in support of the Grammy-winning album with a slew of new dates.

Rocket No. 9 is taking off to the planet Chromatica once again, as Lady Gaga finally rescheduled her highly anticipated Chromatica Ball tour dates more than two years after their initial announcement.

According to a tweet shared Monday by Gaga, the tour will now expand to 15 dates around the world, beginning July 17 and stretching through September 10.

Gaga initially announced the Chromatica Ball tour to coincide with the album's original rollout in 2020, though the coronavirus pandemic forced the global tour's postponement twice: once to the summer of 2021, and again to 2022.

Released in May of 2020, Chromatica debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and produced two top-five hits: Lead single "Stupid Love" and the No. 1-bowing Ariana Grande collaboration "Rain On Me." To date, the House of Gucci actress has only promoted Chromatica with one televised concert performance at the 2020 MTV VMAs, where she took the stage with Grande to perform a medley of tunes from the album.

In addition to the Chromatica Ball , album producer BloodPop previously told EW the team behind the studio set has also worked on continuing the Chromatica era in different ways — including a potential rollout of unreleased songs recorded during the LP's early sessions.

"We worked with SOPHIE very early on. [She was] the first collaborator of those sessions," he told EW shortly after the album's release, referencing late Scottish producer SOPHIE's contributions to the gestation cycle. "Those days were fun. We set up six microphones and recorded [Gaga's] Lamborghini exhaust, and SOPHIE cut it up into samples. [Though they didn't make the album], we still plan to finish those songs and present something special within the Chromatica universe."

Lada Gaga might have been snubbed by Oscar for her non-nominated role in House of Gucci , but her legions of fans will have ample opportunities to show their love this summer: Gaga’s long-postponed Chromatica Ball stadium tour is back on, with more than a dozen dates just announced.

Included on the itinerary: Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium (Sept. 10) and, for the New York area, East Rutherford, New Jersey’s Metlife Stadium (Aug. 11). See the complete tour schedule below.

The tour had originally been set for 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid pandemic shutdown. Gaga’s album Chromatica, which includes collaborations with Elton John, Ariana Grande and others, was released in May 2020, with the remix album Dawn of Chromatica released last September. “Rain On Me,” the album’s Gaga-Grande collaboration, was a #1 hit.

Gaga announced the tour on Instagram today.

Lady Gaga announces 'The Chromatica Ball' summer stadium tour

The tour kicks off in July.

Lady Gaga had to postpone her planned tour in support of her 2020 album, "Chromatica," due to COVID-19, but now she's coming back in a big way.

The star has announced "The Chromatica Ball" summer stadium tour, which will feature her performing in 14 cities starting in July.

In addition to the previously announced tour stops before the pandemic, the new dates feature her performing in eight additional cities.

The stadium tour starts July 17 in Dusseldorf, Germany, and visits Europe and the U.K. before arriving in North America on Aug. 6 with a show in Toronto. The tour also includes stops in Washington, D.C.; East Rutherford, New Jersey; Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Lady Gaga Kicks Off Her Chromatica Ball Summer Stadium Tour! See Her Dramatic Performance Looks

The world tour, delayed for two years by the pandemic, is Lady Gaga's first since 2018

Lady Gaga returned to the stage on Sunday for the first show in her long-awaited Chromatica Ball Summer Stadium tour .

After a two-year delay, the tour — which was originally postponed in June 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic — kicked off with a sold-out show in front of 54,000 people at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The concert was the the first ever public live performance of Gaga's No. 1 selling, sixth studio album, Chromatica . Fan favorite tracks from the LP were among the 20-song set list, including "Rain on Me," "Stupid Love," "Replay," "Free Woman," "911" and "Alice."

Other songs included hits from the songstress' massive discography such as "Bad Romance," "Poker Face," "Shallow," and more (though songs from Gaga's 2013 album Artpop and her 2016 album Joanne appeared to be skipped). The show capped with "Hold My Hand," a single which dropped in May and was written for Top Gun: Maverick .

Of course, this being Gaga, the Chomatica Ball tour was littered with over-the-top theatrical moments and avant-garde outfits, including a striking headdress she paired with a black latex bodysuit.

Her piano was set inside a gorgeous sculpture of thorns.

She was also photographed in a red ensemble that include a jacket with dramatic puff sleeves and a painted bodysuit with duck-tape x's over her nipples. Another look dressed Gaga in a head-to-toe grey look with high-waisted, belted pants.

In a video Gaga posted to Instagram earlier Sunday, the entertainer gave fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the show, nothing that she had not been on tour since 2018.

"The stage was inspired by brutalist architecture, materials, textures, crudity, transparency. A real savage and hard look at yourself, what you've been through," she said. "I wanted to tell a story with abstraction and art, so the show celebrates things that I have always loved like art and fashion and dance and music and technology, poetry, and the way all of those things work together."

She continued, "Everybody has worked so hard on this show and we love you so much. We're so grateful … I want to thank you for sticking it out with me and loving me through the different iterations of my artistry as well as me as a person."

Chromatica was released in May 2020. The Chromatica Ball Tour, produced by Live Nation, will continued across Europe, Asia, and North America for 19 more shows with stadium stops in Sweden, France, the Netherlands, England, Canada, the U.S. and Japan.

Since the release of Chromatica , Gaga released Dawn of Chromatica , a remix album of the original featuring musicians like Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama on Sept. 3. She also released Love for Sale with icon Tony Bennett, a Cole Porter tribute album on Sept. 30.

She also returned to the big screen, with an acclaimed performance in House of Gucci .

This May, Gaga wrote on Instagram that her recent single "Hold My Hand" was a "love letter" to them.

"When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick , I didn't even realize the multiple layers it spanned across the film's heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we've been living in. I've been working on it for years, perfecting it, trying to make it ours," she wrote. "I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other — a longing to be close when we feel so far away and an ability to celebrate life's heroes."

The special was filmed in front of a sold-out crowd of 52,000 people at the Los Angeles Dodger Stadium during her 2022 Chromatica Ball Tour.

The singer is bringing the show to the living rooms of all of her fans with a new concert special that has just set a spring premiere date.

Per Deadline , Lady Gaga's concert special Gaga Chromatica Ball will debut Saturday, May 25 at 8:00 PM on HBO and on the Max streaming service . The special will be a worldwide event with it being available to watch simultaneously on Max in Latin America and the Caribbean, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on HBO Max in The Netherlands and Poland, on HBO GO in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, on Crave in Canada, on Pass Warner in France, on Stan in Australia, and on ThreeNow and Three in New Zealand. There will also be additional territories announced at a later date that include the U.K., Germany, India, and Japan. The show was Gaga's seventh headlining tour, which was delayed by two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to reports, the tour ultimately grossed $112.4 million from 834,000 tickets being sold.

Lady Gaga has opened The Chromatica Ball – which means the much-anticipated setlist has been revealed, and tickets are now on sale.

The iconic pop star is now touring her latest album Chromatica with performances in stadiums in the UK, Europe, US and Asia.

The tour debuted to rave reviews from fans in Dusseldorf on July 17, who said it was “magical” to see Gaga perform such a personal album.

Speaking about the forthcoming tour to Contact Music , an insider said: “Gaga knows how long fans have been waiting for these shows and is putting everything into making them spectacular.

“She has splashed out on a warehouse in London for her team to secretly rehearse the show over and over until everything is exactly how she wants it.

“In terms of staging it’s probably the most complex she’s ever done — and that really is saying something as her tours are always impressive. The stage is huge — money clearly is no object.

“Visuals have been shot and right now it’s about tweaking things so everything goes smoothly and without a hitch.”

Lady Gaga ‘s Chromatica Ball Tour is expected to be one of the hottest events of the summer.

The pop star will travel across the globe, starting in July, in support of her sixth studio album “ Chromatica .” Gaga initially planned to go on tour immediately following the album’s 2020 release but, like many performers, postponed the tour due to COVID.

The singer announced the rescheduled dates last week, with shows set for dozens of cities such as Paris, London, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Tickets for the newly added shows went on sale last Friday, going for as low as $100 on resale sites such as Vivid Seats and Ticketmaster .

The 2020 album faced a fairly silent press cycle due to COVID but still shot to the top of the Billboard 200 chart and earned Gaga a Grammy nod in 2021 for best pop vocal album. Variety ‘s Jem Aswad praised the album as one of her best yet, calling it “pure, joyous, dancefloor pop.”

Before she hits the road with “Chromatica,” Gaga will return to Las Vegas for her “Jazz & Piano” residency , which will run from April 14 to May 1. The residency kicked off in 2019 but was later postponed due to the pandemic. Her remaining nine concerts will take place at the Park MGM hotel and casino, where she will perform some of her favorite songs from “The Great American Songbook” in addition to her and Tony Bennett’s Grammy-winning joint record “Love for Sale.” Tickets are still available for purchase here , starting at $150 apiece.

It's hilarious how she thinks she's some massive touring juggernaut in the same vein as Coldplay, U2 and Metallica. Some of those dates (announced two years ago) haven't even sold out yet and it starts in a week. I'm guessing we'll see thousands of cheap tickets suddenly start appearing in a few days time to make it look like it's a "sellout", and even if they can't flog those to some poor unfortunate souls they'll try to cover up the large empty spots with tarpaulin or block them off entirely in a desperate bid to hide the truth from the GP. Not sure why she's even touring with that awful flop album in the first place, but I guess we'll get some laughs out of this tour if nothing else. Fact is, no one but her ever decreasing fanbase cares about Lady Gaga in 2022 and haven't for a very long time.

Well your standards are very low if you think using inflatables as stage props, wearing terrible costumes and stomping around and squealing like a demented hog is "setting a standard". The fact that she's only touring stadiums this time around gives the impression she thinks she's bigger than she actually is, and yes, she does think about Metallica's numbers considering she used an image from one of their dates to fool people into believing the huge audience was from one of her ARTRAVE dates, LOL and completely hilarious watching her scrambling for excuses when she was called out for lying, but Lady Gaga once said that lies are more interesting than the truth, so is anyone surprised by her constant stream of verbal Diarrhea?

Her career was a car-crash circa Born This Way and it took Bradley Cooper to pull her from the wreckage for ASIB. Everyone thought she would build on that sound and then she released...Chromatica. lol First (solo) single turned out to be a monumental flop and the album dropped down the charts quicker than a lead balloon. She can't get a #1 single these days without collaborations. Oh and the cheap tickets sold first and the expensive ones still remain - some of those tickets have been on sale for months. Lady Gaga Reveals ‘Chromatica Ball' Release Date Nearly Two Years After Announcement

Lady Gaga's long-awaited Chromatica Ball will finally hit screens this month following a two year wait, the singer announced Wednesday.

The concert film, originally announced in 2022, will feature footage from Gaga's global Chromatica Ball stadium tour, which featured music from her 2020 album, Chromatica . The movie premieres on HBO on May 28, and will subsequently be available to stream on Max.

"Put your hands up, come on!" the singer shouts in the trailer for the film. On Instagram , she elaborated: "This film chronicles a time of immense creativity… the fashion, the dance, the music. Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other - you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget. Stadium after stadium. Sold-out crowds. The deafening sing-alongs. Chromatica  was colorful revenge. The chaos of it all became pure energy and life. With a texture best experienced live."

In a lengthy post, Gaga went on to say she loves her fans - the monsters - "more than I can say."

"See yourself in every vocal, every fabric choice, the choreography, every image," she wrote. "Here's the truth - no matter where life or my career has taken me, my time with you always is a path back to a very powerful part of myself. In a stadium filled with YOU it came to life. Thank you for that feeling. I hope you will feel seen when you watch this film. And know that I edited it carefully to honor you."

Later Wednesday, in a separate post , Gaga went into detail on the editing experience for the film. "I spent countless hours in the editing room bringing my vision for this film to life," she wrote. "It is my gift to you – directed, produced and created by me, alongside some of the most talented, creative people in the world."

The Chromatica Ball tour was initially scheduled for summer 2020, but was postponed due to COVID-19. The singer announced the film in September 2022, when she confirmed that cameras had recorded her Sept. 10, 2022 performance at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium. She also serves as director and producer on the project.

UPDATE (2/6):  Lady Gaga ‘s Chromatica Ball Tour has once again been postponed, this time to 2022. Per an email sent to ticket holders , Gaga said: “While some parts of the world are moving quickly to open up, others are not yet ready. So until we can confirm all global dates, we have to postpone the Chromatica Ball shows to the summer of 2022.”

Dates were not announced at the time of this statement.

Lady Gaga has announced new summer 2021 dates for her Chromatica Ball Tour, which was previously postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The six-date trek includes two European stops, followed by a run of four North American dates. Lady Gaga will perform in Paris and London on July 25th and 30th, 2021, respectively, while the North American leg launches August 7th in Boston. After that, she’ll play Toronto on August 16th, New York/New Jersey on August 19th, and Chicago on August 27th. Those who purchased tickets to the original run of concerts will receive information regarding the new gigs via email.

Gaga wrote on Twitter: “We’ve been working hard to figure out the safest and soonest way to bring this show to you, but most importantly want everyone to be healthy and able to dance together at the shows as we always have.”

“I’m not having fun tonight,” Lady Gaga sang to a packed MetLife Stadium on Thursday (Aug. 11) night. No, Mother Monster wasn’t putting down her 54,000 exhilarated fans at the East Rutherford, New Jersey stop of her Chromatica Ball Tour; she was simply delivering the declarative lyric from her wistful breakup anthem “Fun Tonight.” Even so, the opportunity wasn’t wasted on one fan: “WE ARE!” he screamed in response. That unexpected levity during a collective emotional pause was exactly the kind of moment that makes the joy of live music so impossible to replicate. And when a supermoon popped its shining face above the rim of the MetLife Stadium as Gaga segued into “Enigma,” it reminded you how amazing it is to finally have concerts back in our lives.

The Chromatica Ball Tour was initially slated to begin in 2020 but was quickly postponed a year due to the pandemic and then once again until 2022. For most artists, pulling off an all-stadium tour this summer in support of a two-year-old album would be a total non-starter, but in a lot of ways, the timing has benefitted Gaga. Chromatica served as a return to her art-pop weirdness and dancefloor roots, something that many longtime fans had been waiting years for. Despite the (Oscar- and Grammy-winning) quality of her material in the meantime — and even if you Stan Joanne and Tony Bennett duets — there’s no denying that after two years of lockdown, people are ready to get out and dance . And from the deliciously bratty “Sour Candy” to the whirlwind catharsis of “Rain on Me” to the diva house delight “Babylon,” Chromatica has emotionally resonant dancefloor bangers that stretch from ancient city styles to sci-fi chic.

Gaga’s millennia-spanning Chromatica mood board was beautifully conveyed by the Chromatica Ball stage design, which melded the stone-slab elegance of ancient civilizations with shades of Fritz Lang’s German expressionist classic Metropolis (1927), particularly during a moment where a mob of her dancers are pressed against a concrete wall, stretching toward an out-of-reach Gaga dancing above. (Given the significance of Babylon to that silent classic and Chromatica , it’s probably not a coincidence.)

Of course, the Chromatica Ball is far from exclusively new material. She opens with a one-two-three punch of her early dance-pop classics: “Bad Romance,” “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” – i.e., the songs that made O.G. Monsters fall head over forked tail in love with her in the first place. But even while giving her audience the setlist wish list-topping tracks at the start of the show, she smartly holds back a bit, building anticipation by performing “Romance” while encased in an angular robotic cocoon. When she’s released, her mobility is dictated by the constraints of a sharp-shouldered outfit paying homage to art-pop pioneer Klaus Nomi, making her movements deliberate and mysterious (the choreographer brilliantly brings her “Babylon” lyric “moving like a sculpture” to vivid life on the Chromatica Ball stage). All this has the effect that by the time we’re just three songs in, Gaga has put on a hell of a spectacle while barely moving from one spot, yet the audience is still losing their minds. When she finally does join her dancers for the full pop choreography experience on fan-favorites like “Monster” and “911,” the ecstatic release is palpable.

Truly, there are no “grab a drink/hit the restroom” moments during this show, but the standout portion is the piano segment of the evening, where she moves to a smaller in-the-round stage and sits behind a piano that looks like H.R. Giger got his hands on some old tubes and a gnarled tree and went HAM. Make no mistake – Gaga’s vocals were fully audible and impressive from start to finish, but during this part of the show, we’re treated to the depths of her substantial pipes and her deep attachment to the energy of the crowd. Plus, it was smartly balanced: Instead of dialing down her delicious oddities and making it a detour into exclusively acoustic material, she gives us the best of both worlds. “Born This Way” begins as a cabaret piano sing-along before morphing into the full dance-pop version, followed by her declaration that “if this country comes for gay marriage, you know what’s gonna happen.” And while “Shallow” is a vocal showcase by nature, she belted it out with a purple insect apparatus covering the top half of her head, which – as a credit to her remarkable taste level – somehow didn’t detract from the emotional impact one bit.

As for the New Jersey setting, the Manhattan native gamely called out both her Jersey and New York fans throughout the night while shouting out Bruce Springsteen and a mutual collaborator, the late Clarence Clemons. Clemons, an essential E Street Band member, brought his sax to Gaga’s soaring Born This Way single “The Edge of Glory” back in 2011; he died two days after the music video’s premiere.

“All I ever wanted was a video on my fire escape,” she laughed, noting that the “Glory” clip gave her the chance to check that item off her bucket list. Citing it as an example of dreams coming true, she encouraged her fans to follow theirs – but it’s safe to say for about 54,000 folks, at least one of those dreams came true on Thursday night thanks to her.
