Lebanon tourism up by 70% in 2022, recovery signs evident

Tuesday, December 27, 2022 Favorite

Tourism, Conflict, Lebanon, Israel

Lebanon tourism has shown signs of recovery with an increase of 70 percent in the number of inbound tourists to the county.

The first nine months of the year registered an increase in tourists. The success of a summer campaign welcomed 1,720,000 tourists between July, August and September, according to figures from the Lebanese interim government.

The Ministry of Tourism expects to receive half a million visitors during the winter season until next March. Under the “Eid Al-Shtawiyya” (“Let it be repeated in winter”) campaign, industry authorities expect billions of dollars to come in, as confirmed by the high number of airline tickets sold and the number of scheduled flights.

Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport witnessed increased passenger flow by 53 percent during the first ten months of 2022. In the month of July, 90 planes arrived in Beirut at a rate of 180 passengers per flight, ending in September with an average of 110 flights and an increase of 19,000 citizens per day going through the International Airport. The main passenger destinations during the season were Iraq, Jordan and Egypt

Hotel occupancy rate increased from 45 percent between January and September 2021 to 55 percent in the same period this year.

Lebanon to get $9bn cash boost from 2.2 million visitors in 2023, minister says

Crisis-hit country, which hosted 1.7 million tourists last year, is seeking much-needed revenue from the sector.

Lebanon expects to host 2.2 million tourists and earn about $9 billion in much-needed tourism revenue this year as it grapples with ongoing political deadlock and its worst economic crisis since independence.

This is slightly up from the 1.7 million visitors the Arab country hosted in 2022, when it received a similar $9 billion in cash flow from tourism, Walid Nassar, Lebanon's Minister of Tourism, told reporters on the sidelines of the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

Of the 2.2 million expected visitors, 75 per cent are expected to be Lebanese that live abroad who will return home for the holidays and the remaining 25 per cent foreigners mainly from Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait, he said.

The projected tourist numbers stand far below the pre-Covid level of seven million visitors in 2019, he said.

“You can expect a really hot summer in terms of tourism in Lebanon,” the minister told a panel at the annual travel event.

All seats offers direct aisle access and more space for travellers.

Lebanon's economic and financial crises have been exacerbated by a political impasse that has blocked the formation of a new government and the enactment of reforms required to unlock billions of dollars in aid from the International Monetary Fund and other international donors.

Asked how the crisis-hit country will attract a little more than two million tourists this year, the minister said that the Lebanese pound's devaluation has made services and accommodation cheaper for international tourists spending hard currency.

Lebanon's central bank devalued the pound in early February, with the official exchange rate changing to 15,000 to the US dollar, compared with the peg in place since 1997 of 1,507.50 to the greenback.

This led to a surge in consumer prices in March and the Lebanese pound trading in the parallel market at as much as 140,000 to the dollar earlier this month.

Inflation in Lebanon hit an annual rate of about 264 per cent in March.

Warming diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran will also have a positive impact on Lebanon's tourism performance, the minister said.

The Riyadh-Tehran detente is expected to have “positive repercussions on the whole region and in Lebanon in particular”, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said last month.

“Any rapprochement between any two Arab countries will affect positively Lebanon because we are part of this area … we are acting to improve this relationship between Lebanon, GCC [Gulf Co-operation Council countries] and Saudi Arabia,” Mr Nasser said.

Eco-tourism, religious tourism and rural getaways in the mountains are also attracting different types of travellers to the country, Mr Nassar said.

“We were surprised last year, after the port explosion and the Covid-19 pandemic, by the number of people that came to visit Lebanon,” Mr Nassar said.

The tourism ministry and the private sector will organise more than 80 events over the summer months to attract more visitors, he said.

“Lebanon has spectacular tourism offerings. Despite its economic crisis, it is rich in its attractions,” Mr Nassar said.

“Tourism is the backbone of the national economy.”

When is the Best Time To Visit Lebanon?

Lebanon is blessed with an agreeable Mediterranean climate and four distinct seasons, similar to Jordan , but unusual for the Middle East.

When to visit Lebanon - overlaid on beautiful Byblos skyline photo

Yet with such diverse topography, the climate and weather of Lebanon can vary a great deal depending on where you are. In general, spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons to visit Lebanon, summers get very hot, and winter is when you’re likely to see a lot of rain or snowfall.

With around 300 days of sunshine per year, chances are that you will be able to catch some good weather in Lebanon during your trip regardless of when you choose to go. But there are periods that are better than others to travel to Lebanon, depending on what you are looking to do.

Spring in Lebanon

The best time to visit Lebanon, particularly Beirut, any other coastal cities, and the Bekaa Valley (where you can see the ruins of Baalbek ), is during the spring. Between the start of April and through mid-June, the weather is generally sunny, warm and wonderfully pleasant with temperatures ranging between 15 and 28 degrees.

Baalbek Temple Lebanon

Autumn in Lebanon

Autumn is another agreeable time to visit. Temperatures in Beirut usually range between 16 and 30 degrees between September and November.

It’s still possible to take advantage of Lebanon’s beaches during your trip. You can swim starting in the spring all the way through the fall, even as late in the year as November. Autumn is also a great time to hike in the mountains and admire the changing foliage.

Keep in mind that during both spring and autumn, temperatures will be cooler in the mountains, and will drop significantly once the sun goes down. Be sure to bring layers you can add on and remove.

You’ll find more tips on what to pack and what to wear in Lebanon here !

Summer in Lebanon

The coast and places like the Bekaa Valley get very hot during the summer months. Beirut’s temperatures average between 24 and 30 degrees during July and August and you are likely not to see a drop of rainfall during that time. It is also very humid. A place like Bekaa, which is buffered by mountains, will be hot but dry.

This type of summer climate may not be so unusual but frequent power cuts can make it unbearable at times, particularly on the coast. If you and your family are staying in a larger hotel or hotel chain, for example, it theoretically shouldn’t be much of a problem as they will have decent generators to power the air conditioning. Smaller, family-run boutique hotels and guesthouses may have less reliable electricity, however.

Qadisha Valley in summer

Going to the mountains and places like the Qadisha Valley, for example, can be a welcome respite from the humidity on the coast. While it can still get quite hot during the day, the temperatures are significantly more pleasant, ranging between 6-22 degrees, and the air less humid.

Winter in Lebanon

Winters in Beirut are relatively mild temperature-wise, ranging from 11 to 19 degrees between December and March, with January being the coldest month of the year.

This is the season when Lebanon sees a heavy concentration of rain. Also, the weather is a bit … moody. It can be grey, calm, and cool one moment until a sudden a violent thunder or hailstorm sweeps in.

While they usually don’t last too long, it’s always good to be prepared for such a quick change if you’re out and about. Bring extra layers, an umbrella or a rain jacket, with you if you can. Waterproof shoes are always a good idea to wear during the rainy months if you’re walking around a lot outside. While snow is extraordinarily rare in Beirut, it has been known to happen.

Variable weather in Bekaa Valley

Though it is very hot during the summer, the Bekaa Valley gets cold and windy during the winter and may experience heavy snowfall. Snowboots are a good idea to bring.

Bekaa Valley

Also, it’s good to bear in mind that many places may not have adequate heating. During the winter, some smaller hotels and many restaurants will tend to be very cold (often colder than outdoors as many buildings are not properly insulated, and as a result hold humidity inside). Again, it’s good to bring an extra layer just in case.

Snow in the mountains!

Winter in the mountains is vastly different than on the coast. Lebanon also boasts a handful of decent ski resorts, such as Zaarour and Mzaar, whose altitudes range between 1,700 – 2,465 metres.

Mount Lebanon covered in snow in winter

The mountains see quite a bit of snow between December and lasting until March, sometimes even until mid-April. This is the time of year to test the Lebanon cliché and try to ski and swim on the same day. (Just keep in mind that it would be a very busy day.)

Public and Religious Holidays in Lebanon

With such a mix of different religions all within one country, Lebanon has quite an array of public holidays.

While you will find that many institutions like banks, schools and different government offices will be closed on these days, many restaurants, cafes, stores, shopping malls, and certain tourist sites will still be open, albeit possibly with reduced hours. In Beirut, you should still also be able to easily access taxis on Lebanon’s public holidays.

While it might be more strategic to avoid a visit during holidays like Ramadan or Eid (which vary each year in terms of when they take place), there is no need to fear that the country will be completely shut down during these periods. You may just want to avoid these times to reduce any inconveniences.

Tourists are hitting the road again, a new study has revealed.

Visitor spending was up about 13 percent in 2022 over 2021, according to a recent study released by Pennsylvania’s Office of Tourism from data collected by Tourism Economics, a private company based in Wayne.

Visit Lebanon Valley president Jennifer Kuzo said information in the report titled “Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism in Pennsylvania – 2022” is great news for the county’s tourism economy.

“It is very important, and it means a lot to the county,” said Kuzo. “We do a lot of marketing, advertising, promoting and creating trails and things for people to do in the Lebanon Valley. There’s not always a hard Return on Investment for that, an ROI number that we can capture.”

Direct tourism revenue in Lebanon County rose from $258.8 million in 2021 to $296.4 million in 2022, according to the study that includes Lebanon County in a nine-county region that’s designated as Dutch Country Roads.

The state calculated tourist revenue in five categories for the report: lodging, food/beverages, retail, recreation and transportation. Revenue was up about $10 million to $11 million in each of those categories except lodging and retail sales, which rose $4.6 million and $3.3 million, respectively.

Kuzo noted that the increase can be attributed to travelers wishing to hit the road again following the pandemic that made state and federal officials hit the brakes by shutting down businesses in March 2020.

“The pandemic brought everything to a halt, and the tourism and hospitality industries took it on the chin,” she said. “We rely on those industries to bring in tourism revenue. The difference between then and now there is a workforce issue (with a few local businesses) and we’re working to combat that. But, yes, the numbers have bounced back.”

The report includes figures for the Tourism Satellite Account, or TSA, which is the overall impact the tourism industry has on the economy.

That figure reached $312.9 million in Lebanon County in 2022, up from $274.7 million in 2021, an increase of nearly 9 percent. The TSA is compiled by adding direct visitor spending revenue to government contributions and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE).

“The impact of a new manufacturing facility includes the construction of the facility and its operations (and) the TSA framework is what helps define that ‘tourism industry’ similar to that manufacturing plant,” said Christopher Pike, director of Impact Studies at Tourist Economics. “The TSA framework for tourism thus includes the visitor spending in a region as well as construction of hotels/restaurants/stores in future support of visitor activity, an estimate of maintenance spending by tourism-focused businesses as well as personal spending in support of traveling.”

Pike said PCE also includes purchases like a boat for recreational activities or furniture for a vacation home. That figure declined slightly in Lebanon County from $14.6 million in spending in 2021 to $14.4 million in 2022.

lebanon tourist per year

As visitor spending increased, so did employment in the tourism industry during 2022.

Direct employment in travel and tourism also saw an increase in Lebanon County from 2021 to 2022. These statistics are for those individuals who work directly in the tourist industry.

That figure rose from 1,686 workers to 1,824 individuals from one year to the next, which Kuzo called “a good sign for the future of tourism and the hospitality industry.”

Those 1,824 employees generated $67.1 million in income and paid $14.7 million in state and $16.1 million in federal taxes during 2022.

“These numbers show growth and the impact tourism is having on the area,” said Kuzo. “When people say Lebanon County isn’t a big tourist area, I beg to differ. All visitor spending matters whether you’re from Palmyra or New Jersey.”

In Lebanon County, direct employment in travel and tourism exceeded its pre-pandemic level. As of 2019, there were 1,807 workers while the recent study showed a total of 1,824 employees as of 2022, which shows that employment is back and slightly exceeds the pre-pandemic level.

Jobs also increased in Lebanon County that don’t have direct ties to tourism but are impacted by it.

“This total includes the benefit to the economy of that spending – for example, the restaurant meal bought by the traveler was delivered by a wholesaler and the restaurant used a bookkeeper as an accountant and a printer for the menus,” said Pike. “The wholesaler, accountant and printer did not get any money directly from travelers but their services were purchased with money from traveler activity. This is the indirect effect and part of the total.”

lebanon tourist per year

Employment in these kinds of jobs rose from 1,255 in 2021 to 1,328 in 2022, an increase of about 75 positions. Those 1,328 jobs generated $59.6 million in income, paid $13.1 million in state and local taxes and another $12.7 million in federal taxes in 2022.

The report notes that statewide tourism is nearly back to its pre-pandemic levels.

“In 2022, traveler spending in Pennsylvania continued to regain the ground lost due to the pandemic. With growth in overnight visits and business travel recovering, traveler spending increased 19% to within 1.5 percent of pre-pandemic levels. While PA’s visitor volume increases were strong, they were tempered by moderating growth in day-trips impacted by the rise in gasoline prices.”

Kuzo said her office, which is funded by the county’s hotel occupancy tax, uses stays at hotels as an indicator of tourism in the Lebanon Valley. Guests who pay the occupancy tax include those who stay at hotels, motels, inns, Airbnbs, VRBOs, and campgrounds with running water. (The county gets a portion of that tax revenue as does the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center & Fairgrounds, according to Kuzo.)

“Our hotel occupancy figures are up 319 percent in the last eight years, so I know the demand and the interest is winning,” said Kuzo. “That’s a good sign for us and an obvious way to measure our success and the growth of the county. It is a combined success for everything that’s happening.”

She noted that Lebanon County’s proximity to such tourist hotspots as Hershey and Lancaster County contribute to the Lebanon Valley’s tourism figures.

“Yes, we’re getting overflow from Hershey and Lancaster. We can see it in the developments that are coming up,” Kuzo said. “We can see it in the businesses that are popping up. And we’re working harder than ever to create more reasons to come to the Lebanon Valley.”

Within Lebanon County, Kuzo noted the annual Lebanon Area Fair is one of the biggest economic contributors to county tourism because it runs eight days.

Another is the county’s expo center, which operates events throughout the year.

Its website says the grounds feature “75,000 square feet of indoor exhibition space within eight adjoining buildings, 70-plus acres of fairgrounds, and state-of-the-art livestock and equestrian facilities.”

“Pat Kerwin and the expo are doing a wonderful job,” said Kuzo. “He might have 300 groups a year that are using and planning events at the expo center. They work hard to meet and fill that need.”

Expo center executive director Pat Kerwin said the facility’s calendar is one that is nearly full but is still managing to grow. (LebTown runs a monthly calendar of events held at the expo center for its readers.)

“There’s something going on here almost every day of the year except major holidays – although some of those dates are starting to fill in too,” said Kerwin.

lebanon tourist per year

Kuzo also cited the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area as a major draw for tourists who come to witness the migrating snow geese who stop there overnight (although those feathered friends aren’t counted as tourists nor do they pay the hotel occupancy tax fee).

Another top tourist event in the Lebanon Valley for people who live outside of Pennsylvania is the Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show . The art show could see a boost in attendance in 2024 with the LebTown-exclusive announcement of the first-ever international film festival premiere during arts fest this August.

Read More: Lights, camera, action: International film festival to debut at Mt. Gretna art show

“The art show brings thousands of people to the area and a lot of them – because it is a juried art show – are artists from all over the country and we get a lot of people from New York and New Jersey who come down for the show,” said Kuzo. “All you need to do is look at the license plates in the parking lot. You will see Virginia and Maryland and (cars) from all over.”

April 8, 2024, Solar Eclipse Will Pass Over All 7 US Cities Named Nineveh?

Some christian groups have preached that the eclipse is a bad omen., published march 31, 2024.

False

About this rating

On April 8, 2024 , a total solar eclipse will blot out the sun for a couple of minutes in a small band across the United States. The eclipse's totality is the only time humans can look directly at the sun without damaging their eyeballs, and so millions of people from around the world will flock to cities in the path of totality, such as Dallas and Indianapolis.

Eclipses do not discriminate, so anyone in the path of totality will be able to see the sun fully obstructed by the moon. However, some people  have claimed online that there's one interesting coincidence about the eclipse's path of totality: It will pass through every city in the United States named Nineveh. That name is shared by an ancient city in modern-day Iraq that was described in the bible as "evil."

Snopes received an email from a reader who requested that we check the claim about cities named Nineveh in the eclipse path. In our research, we discovered that many of the people making the claim were Christians who were interpreting the eclipse as a bad omen .

Contrary to the claims, Snopes discovered that the path of totality in the eclipse does not pass through seven cities in the United States named Nineveh — it passes through just two. But before counting places named Nineveh, we must first briefly clarify how eclipses work.

How Eclipses Work

A total solar eclipse is caused by the moon and the sun being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. The moon fully blocks the light from the sun, casting a really large shadow on the earth. Those inside the moon's shadow, called the umbra, are the only ones who will be able to look directly at the sun without eye protection, and it's the small path of the umbra that people travel to in order to see the total solar eclipse. The website GreatAmericanEclipse.com created a visualization of the shadow's path across North America.

Outside the umbra, where the moon blocks only some of the sun, is called a partial solar eclipse, and the sun looks like it has a giant bite taken out of it. You cannot view a partial solar eclipse without special eclipse glasses, and this area is much, much larger than the umbra. The entirety of the continental United States will be able to see a partial solar eclipse on April 8, just as the entirety of the United States (even Alaska and Hawaii) was able to see a partial solar eclipse in  2017 .

The cool part (partial) of an eclipse can be seen from a very large area, as long as you wear eclipse glasses. The really cool part (total) of an eclipse can be seen only in a small area. It is the total eclipse that people have thought held religious significance since practically as long as humans have had eyes to see and religions to follow.

To quote the essayist Annie Dillard :

A partial eclipse is very interesting. It bears almost no relation to a total eclipse. Seeing a partial eclipse bears the same relation to seeing a total eclipse as kissing a man does to marrying him, or as flying in an airplane does to falling out of an airplane. Although the one experience precedes the other, it in no way prepares you for it.

Places Named Nineveh

We started with Wikipedia's list of places named Nineveh to get a general idea of where to look. Of course, we cross checked those results with more-reliable sources of knowledge, including Google Maps and data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Wikipedia listed just six places in the U.S. named Nineveh, which made our claim of seven dubious to begin with. Checking the locations of those places on Google Maps, we found that three were actually townships, a term used for county subdivisons in some states.

The first was the largest, Indiana's Nineveh Township (south of Indianapolis), which contains a small hamlet of the same name. Both the township and the hamlet will indeed fall in the path of the total eclipse.

Next, Wikipedia listed two townships in Missouri — one in Adair County (about halfway between Kansas City and Davenport, Iowa) and one in Lincoln County (about an hour northwest of St. Louis). But neither of the two townships contained a village named Nineveh on any of the maps we looked at. Furthermore, neither of the townships fell in the path of the total eclipse.

The fourth place on Wikipedia's list, Nineveh, New York, is about 30 minutes east of Binghamton. We found it marked on maps but, again, it did not lie in the path of totality.

Fifth: Nineveh, Pennsylvania, roughly halfway between Pittsburgh and Morgantown, West Virginia. This Nineveh was marked on maps, but it was also outside of the total eclipse. It was also the last Nineveh listed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Sixth, we found Nineveh, Virginia, an hour and a half west of Washington, D.C. This was the easiest to check: Nobody in the state of Virginia will be able to see full totality during the eclipse. We did not find a label for Nineveh on maps, and buildings located in the area had their postal addresses listed as White Post, Virginia.

That completed the Wikipedia list, but various posts about the supposed line-up listed two more Ninevehs located in the U.S.: one in Texas and one in Ohio.

Nineveh, Texas, was not marked on maps, nor did it have a post office. It was located not far off of Interstate 45 halfway between Houston and Dallas. This one was close, but we eventually confirmed that it would be outside of the zone of totality by referencing nearby cities that also were outside of totality.

Nineveh, Ohio, was a similar story: not found on maps, no post office, no Census data. But this Nineveh, 30 minutes northwest of Dayton, was finally our second hit.

In total, we counted two places named Nineveh in the United States that could be found in the path of totality.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

Map shows area affected by earthquake centered in New Jersey

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter.

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake.

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said.

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out,"

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake.

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884.

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

2024 NFL Draft: Top WR prospect Marvin Harrison Jr. visiting Bears on Monday, per report

Harrison is generally considered the top wideout in his class.

marvin-harrison-jr-usatsi-cbs.jpg

Most people in and around the NFL already know that the Chicago Bears will be selecting a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in this month's draft. It was obviously already headed in that direction early this offseason, and the Bears all but confirmed it when they traded incumbent starting quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers .

It seems highly likely that their man is USC quarterback Caleb Williams, but even if it's not, the Bears are fortunate in that they have another top-10 pick on their hands with which they can potentially land another top-tier talent. Even after the team traded a fourth-round pick for former Los Angeles Chargers star Keenan Allen , many still expect the Bears to pursue a wide receiver with that No. 9 overall pick.

Three of the six experts over on our mock draft hub have the Bears landing Washington's Rome Odunze, for example. But the Bears might have their eye on a wideout even higher on the board than Odunze, who is considered a consensus top-10 prospect.

Chicago is bringing in Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. for a visit on Monday, according to The Athletic . (Also on visits to Chicago on Monday are Texas receiver Xavier Worthy and UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu.) Harrison is potentially in the mix as high as No. 3 overall, and it's highly likely that the Bears would have to trade up to get him.

But with the Patriots , Cardinals , and Chargers all rumored to be potential trade-down targets, maybe the Bears have their eye on doing something similar to what the Houston Texans did last year when they selected C.J. Stroud at No. 2 and then traded up to No. 3 to get Will Anderson.

Pairing Harrison Jr. with Allen and D.J. Moore would give Williams (or whomever else they take at No. 1) one of the best receiver corps any top quarterback prospect has worked with in recent memory, and put him in a far better position to succeed than Fields was throughout his Chicago tenure. If the Bears can pull it off, it might cost a whole lot; but it also might be well worth it.

What is Songkran? Everything you need to know about Thailand’s wet and wild New Year celebrations

Songkran celebrations in downtown Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, April 2014.

Here's where to celebrate Songkran this April.

Songkran will kick off in Thailand on 13 April, bringing raucous water fights to the streets of Bangkok and beyond.

The three-day festival marks the start of the traditional Thai New Year and is a major draw for tourists.

Here’s everything you need to know about Songkran, including its origins and where to celebrate.

Why is Thai New Year celebrated in April?

Songkran, or Thai New Year, is Thailand ’s biggest and most important annual festival.

It is traditionally celebrated for three days starting from the first full moon in April. This is because the country runs on the lunisolar Theravada Buddhist calendar.

The name Songkran comes from an ancient Sanskrit word meaning to ‘enter’ or ‘pass into’ and refers to the movement of the zodiac.

These days, the festival has a set start date of 13 April.

Songkran water fights are rooted in tradition.

Why are there water fights during Songkran?

The water fights that have become synonymous with Songkran are an escalation of tradition.

The first day of the festival is traditionally marked with spring cleaning and a water pouring ceremony. During this, scented water is poured onto sacred Buddha images in temples. This symbolically represents purification - or the washing away of the previous year to welcome the New Year.

On the second day, young people pay respect to their elders by pouring scented water over their hands and feet in return for blessings and floral garlands, and offerings are made to monks and temples.

The festival also marks the start of the rainy season - and one of the hottest times of the year.

Outside of the temples, these elements have metamorphosed into giant water fights involving super soakers, buckets of ice water, loud music and street parties.

Revellers also ‘bless’ one another by putting ‘din sor pong’, a limestone-derived cooling talcum powder paste, on each other’s faces. This has been banned in recent years as some people smear it in other’s eyes and mouths, or occasionally even use it as an excuse for inappropriate touching, but it’s still a regular feature of the festival and is generally used respectfully.

Songkran celebrations in Bangkok, Thailand, April 2015.

Where’s the best place to celebrate Songkran?

If you’re ready and willing to get soaked for three days straight, Bangkok is the place to be for Songkran.

Khaosan Road, the epicentre of the backpacker universe, is guaranteed to have thumping parties and crowded water fights. Siam, in central Bangkok, is also primed for Songkran, with various pop-up stages showcasing traditional dancing and live music.

Silom Road is another hub, with LGBTQ-friendly parties along Soi 4 and a major annual pool party at W Bangkok hotel. Fresh-faced revellers head to RCA, the heart of the city’s clubbing scene, which will also host Siam Songkran Music Festival this year.

If you want to level up with water cannons, laser beams and world-class DJs, book a ticker for S2O music festival .

To see the more traditional side of the festival , head to riverside temples such as Wat Pho and Wat Arun, catch cultural performances in Lumphini Park, or head north to the city of Chiang Mai.

Thai dancers perform a group classical dance during Songkran festival at Phra Singha temple in Chiang Mai province, 2014.

Want sun, sea and sand while getting soaked? The notorious beachside town of Pattaya extends its Songkran celebrations for a full week. Other popular beach destinations like Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phangan also join in the celebrations.

Top tips for celebrating Songkran

If you’re in Thailand during Songkran, be prepared to get wet.

Street vendors sell waterproof pouches in the lead up to the event, which are ideal for keeping your phone safe and dry. You’ll also see goggles for sale - and you’ll understand why when you get squirted in the eyes.

Avoid getting the water in your mouth as it’s likely to make you ill - but don’t forget to stay hydrated with bottles of filtered water.

Road accidents are common during Songkran.

Join in the celebrations but be respectful: don’t splash monks, elderly people or babies. And keep your water fights to designated areas.

Songkran is a notoriously dangerous time on Thailand’s roads due to drunk driving and water splashing. It’s best to avoid travelling during the festival. Use public transport while in the city.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The path of totality for the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

Follow live updates on the solar eclipse

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

The moon covers the sun during a total solar eclipse in Cerulean, Ky.

Below is a list of timings for some U.S. cities along the path of totality, according to NASA .

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
  • Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
  • Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
  • Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
  • Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
  • Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

Other resources can also help you figure out when the various phases of the eclipse will be visible where you live, including NationalEclipse.com and TimeandDate.com .

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.
