Legends Tour, the first tournament in Austria

The event will be attended by some of the best players on the European men's circuit reserved for over 50s

Legends Tour, the first tournament in Austria

The Murhof Golf Club in Frohnleiten, Austria is ready to host the first tournament of the 2022 season of the Legends Tour: the Riegler & Partner Legends. The event will be attended by some of the best players on the European men's circuit reserved for over 50s and, among them, also two Italians: the legend of blue golf Costantino Rocca and Emanuele Canonica.

Rocca, born in Bergamo in 1956, is the first Italian to have played in the Ryder Cup and has three participations in the event (1993, 1995 and 1997) which sees Europe and the USA compete with two successes (1995 and 1997).

In addition to having won two tournaments on the Legends Tour, in his palmarès there are four titles on the European Tour (17 in total as a professional) and a historic second place at the 1995 Open Championship (when he surrendered only to the play-off to the US John Daly).

Canonica, Piedmontese from Moncalieri born in 1971, boasts numerous international appearances and first place in 2005 on the European Tour at the Johnnie Walker Championship.

Legends Tour, event

Among the protagonists, in addition to the two Azzurri, also Mauricio Molina, winner of the tournament in 2021.

The host Markus Brier is also among the favorites. The Austrian, right on this course, in 2002 won his first title on the Challenge Tour: the Austrian Golf Open. Eyes also focused on Frenchman Thomas Levet, second on the 'money list' in 2021.

Absent, however, last season's winner of the order of merit: Welsh Stephen Dodd. Costantino Rocca is an Italian golfer. He boasts 5 victories in the European Tour, obtained between 1993 and 1999, among which the triumph in the 1996 Volvo PGA Championship stands out.

His 2nd place at the 1995 British Open was also historic, in which he was defeated only at the play-off by the American John Daly on the Old Course in St. Andrews, one of the "temples" of golf. The shot from the road on the 71st hole and the very long putt pocketed on the 72nd and last hole of the regular laps are still remembered today by enthusiasts all over the world.

He was the first Italian to play for Europe in the Ryder Cup. He has three participations in the Ryder Cup (1993, 1995, 1997): of this tournament, memorable are the Hole in One obtained in 1995 and his victory in single against Tiger Woods in the 1997 edition in Spain.

What Is The Legends Tour?

Formerly known as the European Seniors Tour and the Staysure Tour, the Legends Tour is the men’s professional golf tour for members aged 50 and older. Five years after the first edition of The Senior Open, won by Neil Coles in 1987, more than 60 professionals called for a formally structured Tour, which was then created in 1992.

The Legends Tour features a strong playing membership that includes former Major winners, world number ones and Ryder Cup players and captains. Players compete for the John Jacobs Trophy, which is awarded to the golfer who finishes first on the Legends Tour Order of Merit each season.

You can get up close and personal with Legends at world-class destinations across Europe, the United States and Africa by getting your Legends Tour 2022 tickets .

Past winners (full list below) include Scotland legends Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance, as well as former Masters champion and world number one, Ian Woosnam.

A host of other big names and former DP World Tour champions compete on the Legends Tour, including Thomas Bjørn, Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie, Michael Campbell, and America’s Tom Lehman.

Who Owns The Legends Tour?

In 2020, the Staysure Tour was rebranded the Legends Tour under a new ownership structure. This was part of a ground-breaking agreement between the European Tour and Staysure founder and group CEO Ryan Howsam.

Under the agreement, Howsam, who founded insurance firm Staysure in 2004, took a majority equity share in the Legends Tour. Howsam, a golf fanatic, also owns and invests in companies in sport, insurance, tech, food and media.

What Is The Alliance Series?

A number of Legends Tour events (see below) will take place in ‘Alliance’ format, which offers amateur golfers (max handicap 18 for men and 24 for women) the opportunity to compete alongside the Legends of the game and live the life of a pro – on and off the golf course.

There are six confirmed Alliance Series events in 2022. At these tournaments, amateur golfers get to play a minimum of two competitive rounds during the Championship, alongside different pros in front of crowds and the television cameras.

It costs between £8,000 and £12,000 to enter a tournament. As well as the playing experience, the package offers inside-the-ropes access at the tournament, hospitality, and use of the players lounge.

What Is The Celebrity Series?

The Celebrity Series provides another unique playing experience, where amateur golfers get to play with personalities from sport, business and media the day before the tournament gets underway. A Celebrity Series team consists of two amateurs, one Legend and one celebrity. The cost is £2,500 per person or £5,000 per team of two amateurs.

It’s a package that comes with all the trimmings, including inside-the-ropes access at the tournament, use of the players lounge and locker room, and post-round hospitality with the Legends.

What Is The Championship Pro-Am?

There’s a third opportunity for amateur golfers to experience the life of a pro golfer within the Legends Tour set-up  – the Championship Pro-Am. This takes place ahead of the competitive tournament days, and costs £3,500 per team (three amateurs and one professional). Individual places can be purchased for £1,000.

Legends Tour Schedule 2022

The Legends Tour has returned stronger and boasts an international schedule with tournaments taking place across a variety of different countries and continents. The Tour will come to a conclusion in the exotic climes of the Indian Ocean, with the ‘Indian Ocean Swing’. Firstly, The MCB Tour Championship Seychelles will be played at Constance Lemuria, Praslin, Seychelles, on December 2-4, 2022, while the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius will return to the Legends Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage, Poste de Flacq, Mauritius, the following week where players will compete for a minimum prize fund of €500,000.

A number of other events and venues complement a growing roster of top top-class tournaments on the Legends Tour in 2022, and there’s a lot of golf to be played before the Order of Merit winner gets crowned in Mauritius. And along the way, the players will be competing for record prize funds totalling over €15 million.

Legends Tour pays tribute to Barry Lane

legends tour austria

A star-studded field is expected to descend on Austria’s south-eastern region of Styria between May 18 and 20 for the first event of the new season – which promises to be the biggest season since the Legends Tour’s rebranding in 2020 – as Golf Club Murhof hosts the event for the fourth time.

In 2022, Euan McIntosh secured a maiden Legends Tour victory by one-shot at the venue after holding off a final-day charge from South African James Kingston. Helped by a stunning second round 64, McIntosh became the first Scot since Paul Lawrie in 2019 to win on the Tour, capping a remarkable rise for the 2018 Scottish Amateur Champion winner.

The two previous Riegler & Partner Legends events were won by Argentinians, with José Cócereswinning by four from Lawrie in 2019, before finishing four strokes back in second place as compatriot Mauricio Molina won for the first time on European soil in 2021.

This year’s event at Golf Club Murhof will also pay tribute to former Legends Tour, DP World Tour and Ryder Cup player Lane, with the event being the first held since his recent passing at the age of 62. Lane – an eight-time Legends Tour winner – acted as an ambassador for the Riegler & Partner Legends event and Golf Club Murhof since 2020.

Founded in 1962, Golf Club Murhof has played host to multiple major international golf events in its history, including the Austrian Ladies Open between 1998 and 2000. A few kilometres north of the historic city of Graz, the course – which is a challenge for golfers of all abilities – is surrounded by rolling hills and set in an area of lush parkland.

Mag. Gerald Stangl, promoter of the Reigler & Partner Legends, said: “It is a great honour to host the first event of the 2023 season. It will also be the first ever after the loss of our ambassador Barry Lane. We will try to create a very emotional and special week that pays tribute to him and his unique personality.”

The upcoming Legends Tour season promises to be the biggest since the rebranding in 2020, with larger fields, record-breaking prize funds, and new venues hosting major events like Ireland’s Seapoint Golf Links and Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen.

Former Ryder Cup captains and Major winners including Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie, Michael Campbell, Ian Woosnam and Thomas Bjorn all competed on last year’s Legends Tour.

Phil Harrison, chief executive of the Legends Tour, said: “We are super excited to be returning to Golf Club Murhof for the 2023 Riegler & Partner Legends as we look to kick start the season with a bang.

“Last year the event was a great season-opener, and with a strong field of golfers set to take part in May, this year promises to be no different. The event also gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Barry Lane with the week’s golf in Austria being played in his memory.”

Legends Tour: Biggest schedule and record prizepool

02/15/2024 by Golf Post Editors

The Legends Tour has unveiled plans for a record-breaking 2024 season, headlined by its busiest schedule to date and a €18 million prize pool.

Running from April to December, this year’s globetrotting schedule will feature 20 events – featuring new tournaments set to debut in Barbados, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, the UK and Zambia, with even more additions still to be announced. They join Legends Tour staples such as the flagship Staysure PGA Seniors Championship – which will return to Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen following the success of last year’s event – and the Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links.

Many of the Legends Tour’s brightest stars will be eyeing up Major victory in 2024 at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores Golf Club, the US Senior Open at Newport Country Club and The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Carnoustie Golf Links. The season will culminate with the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius at Constance Belle Mare Plage, where qualifying players will contest for the John Jacobs Trophy, which was won in 2023 by former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker.

Largest prize pool in Legends Tour history

As well as the tournament silverware, some of golf’s biggest names will also be competing for the largest prize pool in Legends Tour history. The €18 million (more than €8.6 million of which will be assigned outside of the Majors of senior men’s golf – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open presented by Rolex) represents a 100 per cent increase since the tour returned to a full schedule in 2022 following the Covid pandemic, with $2 million to play for in the final two events on the Road to Mauritius and a bonus pool of $100,000 for the top five players in the final standings.

Complementing the drama of the professional events will be the unique Celebrity Pro-Am, which sees stars from the world of sport and entertainment competing to raise money and awareness for their chosen charities. Meanwhile, passionate amateurs can tee off alongside their heroes in the Legends Experience, the tour’s one-of-a-kind pro-am experience.

Legends Tour on the rise

The announcement suggests the global growth of the Legends Tour – which hit new heights in 2023 – is set to continue. At the end of the season, the brand announced record figures for amateur participation, spectators and social media engagement, with the latter taking total reach across all channels to over 100 million people for the first time. In November, the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam – the competition’s first foray into Vietnam – embodied the expansion into new markets, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, that has characterized the Legends Tour’s first three years.

Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and 2024 promises to be another incredible year for the Legends Tour. “Securing new events in some truly spectacular venues around the world is always a key objective of ours, and we are thrilled with the additions to the schedule for this season, as well as the prestigious venues we are honored to return to. “Everything – from the standard of competition to the number of amateurs getting involved – has been growing year on year, and this year will be no exception. We cannot wait to see it all unfold.”

Legends Tour: New events in the 2021 schedule for over-50s circuit

The Legends Tour announced the first part of its International Schedule for 2021, marking the return of over-50s professional golf in Europe following the cancellation of the Tour's 2020 season due to coronavirus.

The Legends Tour has confirmed the first part of its 2021 schedule, with 13 tournaments already scheduled for the over-50s circuit in Europe next year.

Riegler & Partner Legends in Austria will kick off the 2021 campaign from May 7-9, following the cancellation of the Tour's 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, with further events to be added at a later date.

The announcement follows the ground-breaking joint venture between Staysure Group CEO Ryan Howsam and the European Tour earlier this year, when Howsam acquired a controlling stake in the Staysure Tour which was rebranded as the Legends Tour.

Mark Aspland, Head of the Legends Tour, said: "We have been extremely excited to announce this schedule after the cancellation of our 2020 Schedule and we cannot wait to begin again next year.

"We have used the time productively to strengthen our schedule for 2021 and give our members as many playing opportunities as possible. We have a fantastic mix of old and new events and we are looking forward to visiting places we know well and venues and territories that are new to many of us.

TRACK CHECK VIDEOS

Please  take a look at our   Track Check video's here   so you can see just how epic this destination is and what to expect

Can I change the arrival and departure dates?

The tour does need to run Saturday - Saturday. However if group numbers allow it maybe possible to adjust this, subject to availability and an increased charge.

Can I book a group larger than 8?

Yes, we can accommodate up to 16, though it will be subject to availability.

Can I travel as an individual?

Yes, though each week will require a minimum number of 4 clients to run.

Can I travel to a different airport?

Transfers can be arranged from Munich airport subject to availability and an increased cost of £200 per person.

What is the cost without transfers as I want to make my own way to Austria?

If transfers are not required the total cost of the trip is reduced by £100 per person.

Is Half Board an option in Schladming aswell?

Half Board option is an extra £20 per person per night.

Can I stay in just one resort?

If you wish to stay in Schladming or Leogang for the duration of the week the cost is £849 based on bed & breakfast and transfers to and from Salzburg airport, with a 6 day lift pass included.

How many trails are in Schladming & Leogang?

For more information on the trail network, check out our Schladming and Leogang resort guides

Recommended bike?

We would recommend a downhill bike for Schladming. It's a gnarly place to ride and to make the most out of the downhill tracks there a big rig would be ideal. That being said we have shredded all the trails here on long travel 27'5 and 29ers so you will be able to have an amazing time on your sturdy enduro bike aswell, we'd say a minimum travel requirement of 150mm front and rear. In Leogang either bike is appropriate, though we would not recommend taking the downhill bike across the Saalbach, the trails there are good but it will be hard work getting there.

If you ride in Reiteralm an enduro bike is recommended.

You should bring a full face helmet and all the protective equipment you would feel comfortable wearing.

Can I hire a bike?

There is a well stocked bike shop at the base of the Planai & Leogang lifts that have downhill and enduro bikes for rent. They are confirming brands and pricing with us at the time of writing.

How far away is Reiteralm?

It's around 15 minutes by van. Though technically in Schladming the trails start quite far up the hill one valley from the main riding area. You can easily ride back to Schladming from Rieteralm however. a private transfer there costs €12 per person for a minimum of 4 people, and a public bus service will be running from 2020 that can take bikes, to be included with your lift pass.

How far way is Saalbach?

As the crow flies not far at all, one valley, however to ride there takes around 1 - 2 hours depending on fitness, the trail linking the two resorts is flat and quite challenging, there will be alot of pushing!

Do you need a guide?

No, not in Schladming. However in Reiteralm you will access the better trails more quickly with one. A half day with a guide costs €30 per person based on a minimum of 4 people, and is all you'll need to get your bearings quickly.

Schladming is an excellent place to get some coaching. The bike school run by Austrian World cup legend Markus Pekoll would be a great addition to this trip. Prices TBC.

If you want to get some proper back country in around Saalbach a guide is good idea, contact us if you do. You will find all of the trails very well sign posted.

Is Schladming a big town? Bike Shops, Bar and Restaurants easy to find?

Schladming is a big mountain town. It has a couple of supermarkets, many bars and restaurants of all types. There is a good supermarket 30 seconds from your hotel, and a good bike shop even closer, it's even got  it's own brewery making the refreshing Schladminger Pilsner , and a very modern and well equipped hospital, which you hopefully won't need!

Is Leogang a big town? Bike Shops, Bar and Restaurants easy to find?

Bad Leogang, where the riding and hotel is, is tiny, there are a collection of hotels, a couple of cool bars and one huge bike shop. There is a small store selling essentials. The main hub of Leogang is marginally bigger, 15 miuntes ride away

What is the average cost of a beer? An evening out?

A pint of Austrian pilsner will set you back between €4.50 and €6 depending on where and when you buy it. Dinner in a decent restaurant will cost you around €12 - €20 per main course.

Will I need insurance?

Absolutely. With the UK's departure from the EU your EH111 card no longer covers medical care. You'll also want insurance against other circumstances such as bike theft, damage or cancellation for personal reasons. We recommend Yellow Jersey . Booking with us gets you a discount code for a 10% off.

We have taken care of the accommodation itinerary for you on this tour, but you’ll be tackling the trails in these resorts the way you want to, both resorts are fully lift assisted and with a huge amount of development in both of the past year this really is a bucket list mountain bike holiday.

Leogang is a small Austrian village that has been investing in the mountain bike scene for some years, with numerous World Cup and World Championship events and a huge trail network, jump lines and pump tracks. The Leogang the mountain bike community knows is very small. A hub of hotels and a few bars surrounding the lift station, it's a unique spot, imagine a bike park that feels like a playground built for mountain bikers!

The riding and how you approach Leogang is entirely up to you. If you have a downhill bike, you’re going to want to hit up the flow lines from the very top of the mountain such as Hangman or the jump track Hot Shots , before building up to the more testing Flying Gangster and Speedster (the World Cup track). Nothing quite beats the pace of the tracks here, absolute flat out madness. A real positive of the trail network here is it can be ridden on an enduro bike also. There is a little less traffic here during the operating months of June and July, with trails in good condition you’ll find you 160+ bike capable of tackling every trail, as well as opening up the possibilities of some of the new Enduro dedicated short travel bike trails such as Matzalm.

There is also the possibility to hit up the trails in Saalbach and Hinterglemm. Though it is a bit of journey to get there and back (allow an hour and a half each way, with some pushing and decent amount of pedalling), it’s worth the adventure and the riding in all the resorts is excellent, especially on the enduro bikes. These resorts are also part of the well marked ‘Big 5’ route that takes you across five peaks that are all lift assisted around the region, taking a full day to complete.

Schladming is a resort at the start of a new chapter in its mountain bike life and we have waited a long time, for the right time to do something here. The lure of one of the worlds greatest Downhill tracks has always been huge and now with the addition of what we think will be Europe's best lift assisted jumpline alongside many new Enduro trails this place is making a comeback and it's serious.

We are stoked to be able to offer this Leogang / Schladming package for 2020 and beyond. After several years of research, planning and connecting the right people in the right places we feel it's time for these mountain bike bucket list destinations to show their true colors and enter the lime light once again. #ONEPEDALAHEAD

The top section of the Planai lift is where most of the new work has taken place. This was always considered the ‘fun’ part of the bike park, with the fast Blue and Red flow lines, with their open shale corners, jumps and berms here and still in all their glory. Nearly every instagram clip you’ve seen in Schladming over the years would’ve been taken on this section of the hillside. Now add into this the best new jump line we’ve seen in Europe, and a brand new flow line and you’ve got yourself a serious park. The jump line, as yet un-named, is part of a project to take Schladming to the next level. Realised and created by slopestyle guru Matthias Garber and local legend Markus Pekoll , the fun you’ll have up here is off the charts. Every lip and berm has been sculpted to perfection, the jumps all work in harmony and it’s something you could ride on anything from a slopestyle bike to a full blown DH rig and have a blast. Bring the noise.

The legendary World Cup track has seen some of the most wild races over the last 15 years and a is a rider favourite for good reason. A full day is needed to learn what is actually quite a short run, what it may lack in length is more than made up for in difficulty. What makes this track special is the way that it flows down the mountain, gaps, transfers and technical sections litter the course and to get up to speed takes some skill and courage!

Schladming have also invested heavily in a new trail network in the Rieteralm riding zone, a ten minute drive from Schladming. Transfers can be arranged to ride this zone which is best ridden on an enduro bike. Lift assisted and predominantly gravity fed, the riding here is similar to many alpine bike parks, but far, far longer. Cleverly built flow lines are the main feature of the trail network, with fun to be had for most levels of rider from intermediate to expert.

Legends Tour hits new landmark with biggest schedule and record €18million prizepool

The Legends Tour has unveiled plans for a record-breaking 2024 season, headlined by its busiest schedule to date – including nine new events - and an eye-watering €18million prize pool.

Legends Tour

Running from April to December, this year’s globetrotting schedule will feature 20 events - featuring new tournaments set to debut in Barbados, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, the UK and Zambia, with even more additions still to be announced.

They join Legends Tour staples such as the flagship Staysure PGA Seniors Championship - which will return to Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen following the success of last year’s event – and the Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links.

As well as the tournament silverware, some of golf’s biggest names will also be competing for the largest prize pool in Legends Tour history. The €18million (more than €8.6million of which will be assigned outside of the Majors of senior men’s golf – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open presented by Rolex) represents a 100 per cent increase since the tour returned to a full schedule in 2022 following the covid pandemic, with $2million to play for in the final two events on the Road to Mauritius and a bonus pool of $100,000 for the top five players in the final standings.

The announcement suggests the global growth of the Legends Tour - which hit new heights in 2023 - is set to continue. At the end of the season, the brand announced record figures for amateur participation, spectators and social media engagement, with the latter taking total reach across all channels to over 100million people for the first time.

In November, the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam - the competition’s first foray into Vietnam - embodied the expansion into new markets, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, that has characterised the Legends Tour’s first three years.

Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and 2024 promises to be another incredible year for the Legends Tour.

“Securing new events in some truly spectacular venues around the world is always a key objective of ours, and we are thrilled with the additions to the schedule for this season, as well as the prestigious venues we are honoured to return to.

“Everything - from the standard of competition to the number of amateurs getting involved – has been growing year on year, and this year will be no exception. We cannot wait to see it all unfold.”
