Jurgen Klopp, Mohamed Salah and a spat that sums up Liverpool’s damaging slump

KLOPP-SALAH

Mohamed Salah emerged from the corridor leading out of the London Stadium deep in conversation with David Moyes.

As the West Ham United manager put a hand on his shoulder and they said their goodbyes, Salah was flanked by a member of Liverpool ’s security staff for the short walk to the team bus.

It took him past a group of reporters eager to get his thoughts on an unseemly touchline spat with his own manager, Jurgen Klopp, as he waited to be introduced off the bench with 11 minutes to go in Saturday’s 2-2 draw .

Moments earlier, Klopp had sought to draw a line under it during his press conference. “We spoke about it in the dressing room, but it’s done for me. That’s it.” Asked whether the Egypt forward saw things that way, Klopp added: “It was my impression, yes.”

So, nothing to see here? All water under the bridge? Salah clearly did not get the memo.

It is standard practice for him to turn down interview requests — he has only stopped post-match to speak to the UK’s written press twice in nearly seven years as a Liverpool player — but this was not the usual smiling response of, “Not today, thank you”.

Not breaking stride, he said: “There’s going to be fire today if I speak.”

The words were uttered matter of factly.

“Fire?” The Athletic inquired.

“Of course,” he replied.

After his manager had sought to douse the flames, Salah poured petrol on them.

There did not need to be “fire”. He could have taken the opportunity to play down the altercation. Even better, he could have apologised publicly for the disrespect he had shown Klopp. He did neither.

liverpool fc stadium tour dates

After a wretched few weeks which have seen Liverpool’s title challenge disintegrate, it was another sad sight on Klopp’s farewell tour.

For context, Salah was added to the club’s leadership group last summer because he was regarded as such a role model for the youngsters in the squad. And what happened yesterday was not a brief moment of petulance. It spanned over a minute.

The flashpoint started with Salah, annoyed that he had remained on the bench for so long, seeming reluctant to shake Klopp’s hand as he prepared to come on. Words were exchanged before Klopp found fellow substitutes Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez more willing to embrace him.

As the incident continued, Klopp initially stepped away from it and focused his attention on the field, before walking back towards Salah and getting something else off his chest.

What followed was completely unacceptable as Salah, usually so mild-mannered, vented his spleen towards his manager, throwing his arms up and pointing in Klopp’s direction. It took Nunez, the most unlikely of peacemakers, to step in to calm his team-mate down.

Just to complete a bleak few minutes, Michail Antonio nodded West Ham level before the triple substitution could be made.

At the final whistle, Salah was the first Liverpool player to leave the pitch, briefly aiming some applause towards the away end, before ruffling his hair and disappearing down the tunnel. This was the day when the frustration that has been gradually building inside him erupted.

Salah’s durability has been as remarkable as his goal-scoring feats since arriving at Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017. He missed just 10 league matches across his first six seasons at Liverpool.

This season, he has missed much more game-time than usual. Damaging a hamstring at the Africa Cup of Nations on January 18 kept him out until the trip to Brentford a month later. Then he immediately broke down again and spent another three weeks on the sidelines and was not available for the Carabao Cup final win on February 25.

Since returning to action in early March, he has scored just five goals in 13 appearances, and two of those were penalties. During that damaging period, Liverpool have been knocked out of the FA Cup and the Europa League , and have now dropped out of the title race.

In three of the past six matches, Salah has been named on the bench. You only have to look at how he has reacted to being substituted in games to appreciate how much not making the starting XI hurts.

But the harsh reality is that he can have no complaints about being overlooked of late.

He has not pressed like he should out of possession, his touch has repeatedly let him down and, in the final third, he has been wasteful. He has looked like a player lacking rhythm and confidence.

liverpool fc stadium tour dates

Sorting out Salah’s future is one of the most pressing items in prospective new head coach Arne Slot’s in-tray as he prepares to take over from Klopp this summer.

It is a genuine dilemma. We are talking about one of the greatest players in the club’s history; a forward who is fifth on Liverpool’s all-time list of scorers with 210 goals in 346 matches and is still their top scorer this season with 24 goals in all competitions. He became the first Liverpool player to score more than 20 goals in all competitions in seven successive seasons.

It would be premature to describe his slump as proof that he is a declining force but, as he both turns 32 and enters the final year of his deal this off-season, it would be a sizeable gamble to offer another lucrative extension to someone earning over £350,000 ($437,145) per week.

Last August, Liverpool turned down an offer of £100million, potentially rising to £150m with add-ons, for Salah from Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ittihad, largely because they did not have enough time to find a suitable replacement. If a similar offer is forthcoming much earlier in this summer’s window, they would surely be tempted to cash in, given their self-sustaining business model.

Salah's big-money move feels inevitable - but Saudi-Egyptian relations are complicated

Much will depend on Salah himself.

Is he ready to wave goodbye to elite football in Europe and head for Saudi? There is a school of thought that he would rather sit tight for the final year of his contract and then depart as a free agent in 2025, when he could command a huge signing-on fee.

Maybe a proper break in the months ahead and then a new start, seemingly under Slot, will get him firing again.

But Salah needs to reflect on what happened at the London Stadium yesterday, because he let himself down. If he had something to get off his chest, it should have happened behind closed doors.

Klopp has elevated Salah into a global icon at Anfield — his departing manager deserved better than this.

Liverpool ratings: Salah gets 6/10 in elimination to Atalanta

The ESPN FC crew point to Liverpool's misfiring frontline after they exited the Europa League at the hands of Atalanta. (1:47)

Liverpool were eliminated from the Europa League quarterfinals by Atalanta on Thursday night as their 1-0 second-leg win saw them lose 3-1 on aggregate at Gewiss Stadium.

They got off to a perfect start when Mohamed Salah scored from the spot after the Reds were awarded a penalty for handball to cut the deficit to two.

A much-improved performance from Jürgen Klopp's side in the opening 45 minutes saw them in control of the first half, and they should have been two up when Salah was through on goal before the break, only for him to lob the ball off target.

But Liverpool didn't have as much joy in the second half as the attack struggled to make chances, with many of the passes over the top going straight to La Dea goalkeeper Juan Musso .

That saw hope begin to fade as time went on, and it was a similar story even after Klopp introduced Darwin Núñez , Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott as part of a treble substitution. The Reds simply couldn't ignite their attack and were slow towards the latter parts of the game, leading to a fairly comfortable night for the hosts in the end.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Trent Alexander-Arnold 's display was a promising one for Liverpool, who will need the sort of performance he delivered against Atalanta when playing in the Premier League . A clean sheet also provides a foundation to build on, with Liverpool's best back four and goalkeeper back fit.

Liverpool's attack fizzled out in the second half in a performance in which they simply didn't threaten enough. The Reds now only have the Premier League to go for.

Manager rating (out of 10)

Jürgen Klopp, 6 -- Liverpool were a much better side with Klopp instructing his forward line to interchange much more frequently to disrupt Atalanta's strict man-to-man marking system and they were also much more organised defensively. His substitutions were well-timed, but ultimately they didn't deliver.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best)

GK Alisson , 7 -- A confident figure between the posts who sometimes stepped up to build attacks when Atalanta were set deeper.

DF Andy Robertson , 7 -- Robertson was tireless off the ball as he looked to get high up the left-flank to create an out ball for his team mates. His movement also saw him sometimes making an option in centre-forward areas.

DF Virgil van Dijk , 7 -- Commanded the backline well when Atalanta were looking to play direct, catching them offside when Teun Koopmeiners had the ball in the net in the first half. Dominant when challenging for the ball.

DF Ibrahima Konaté , 7 -- The France international was assured in his duels and relished the challenge against Atalanta's forwards. A confident display from the 24-year-old.

DF Trent Alexander-Arnold , 8 -- An instrumental performance from Alexander-Arnold saw him at the heart of many of Liverpool's best pieces of attacking play, during a match in which he displayed all of his passing ability to create chances. Substituted in the second half after 72 minutes which will be positive for his fitness.

MF Alexis Mac Allister , 6 -- Pressed well from midfield and was aggressive in winning the ball back, but could have been better with his passing which wasn't at its normal level.

MF Curtis Jones , 6 -- Confident when on the ball during moments when he had time to run at the defence directly. Pressed aggressively from midfield in tandem with Mac Allister. Missed Dominik Szoboszlai after a good run was made into space in the 63rd minute.

MF Dominik Szoboszlai , 6 -- Szoboszlai created space with some promising runs into space to disrupt Atalanta's man-to-man system and always looked to play forwards, though he could have been a little more accurate at times.

FW Luis Díaz , 6 -- A hard-working performance from Díáz saw him stretch the play down the left flank where Alexander-Arnold picked him out before Liverpool won a penalty. Brought his marker out of position with confident play dribbling with the ball.

FW Cody Gakpo , 7 -- The Netherlands international continued his recent positive run of form and linked play well, setting up Salah for Liverpool's best chance from open play in the first half. His movement also caused trouble for Atalanta's defence.

FW Mohamed Salah , 6 -- Salah clinically dispatched his penalty, but he really should have had a brace with his one-on-one that he put wide of the goal.

Substitutes

Darwin Núñez (Salah, 67') 5 -- Gave the ball away too many times in quick succession, and it was too late by the time Liverpool began to play more directly towards him.

Diogo Jota (Diaz, 67') 5 -- Struggled to make an impact on the game when introduced, with Atalanta aggressive in pressing him.

Harvey Elliott (Szoboszlai, 67') 6 -- Elliott worked hard to get into space from central areas but Liverpool couldn't seem to get him on the ball enough.

Joe Gomez (Alexander-Arnold, 72') 6 -- On in place of Alexander-Arnold who has just returned from injury.

Jayden Danns (Robertson, 79') N/R -- A Europa League debut for the Liverpool academy graduate.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Manchester United, Real Betis looking forward to summer showdown at Snapdragon Stadium

United States Men's National Team player Johnny Cardoso

On July 31, the two international soccer powers will face off in an exhibition match at Snapdragon Stadium

Manchester United of the English Premier League has long been among the most well-known sporting brands in the world.

Real Betis of Spain’s La Liga has a massive following throughout Europe and wants to expand its footprint in the United States.

On July 31, the two international soccer powers will face off in an exhibition match at Snapdragon Stadium as part of each team’s pre-season tour.

Tickets for the match are on sale now.

The two clubs have history dating back over 100 years yet have only met four times, most recently in a pair of matchups in last season’s Europa League tournament.

Manchester United’s San Diego visit will also include a game against Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 27 and one against Liverpool in Columbia, S.C.

Juan Mata, who starred for Manchester United, and Tab Ramos, the former USMNT star who played at Real Betis, are taking part in numerous promotional activities as club ambassadors. They took a tour of Snapdragon Stadium on Friday.

Manchester United made its Snapdragon debut last July with an exhibition against fellow-English club Wrexham.

“It’s fantastic,” Mata said. “I experienced it myself as a player, coming over to the States many times. Just to hop on a plane and travel 12, 15 hours and get off and people still know you and love you and the club, it’s a great experience. Man United is one of the biggest names in the history of the sport so it’s nice to come to San Diego and get to know this town and gain new fans here in this wonderful stadium.”

While EPL teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have made several preseason trips to the U.S. for exhibition games over the years and carved out huge followings thanks to television contracts that regularly put the sport in front of American eyeballs, La Liga has been playing catch-up.

Though clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are very well known among international soccer fans, the league as a whole has not gathered the same kind of following in part because the presence on U.S. television has not been nearly as strong and teams haven’t made as many tours.

To that end, La Liga President Javier Tebas recently revealed plans to hold a regular season La Liga match in the United States during the 2025-26 season.

The door for holding such a match was opened recently when an agreement was reached between New York City-based event promoter Relevant Sports and FIFA, the sport’s international governing body.

“An official match in the U.S. will strengthen our position in the North American market,” Tebas told the Daily Mail. “Other very competitive leagues are coming so we can’t afford to always do the same things.”

Ramos, who played for Real Betis from 1992-95 and played in three World Cups for the USMNT, sees the upcoming tour as a good opportunity for the club to grow its brand.

It will be the club’s third visit to the U.S. since 2019 and only its second appearance in California.

Though official rosters for the tours will not be set until after preseason camps open, there’s a good chance that current USMNT member Johnny Cardoso will be on the field for Real Betis.

Cardoso has one goal and two assists in 11 appearances with Real Betis this season.

“Betis has a massive following in Spain,” Ramos said. “Most people here are more familiar with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico … but it is a huge club and is just starting to get its footprint out and about it. To play here in San Diego in a wonderful stadium like this against a club like Man United is a great thing. It’s a nice chance to win over some fans.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
