The place exceeded my expectations and made the experience worth every kina spent😊👏it's definitely an amazing place to chill, have fun, unwind and reset by using all the facilities provided to meet your needs and expectations. The staff, facilities, the food and the place were just amazing making our stay lovely with no issues

Location was cool with the surrounding beaches and hiking area over the hill. Lovely room with nice balcony and good views.

The island is a fabulous location so close to Port Moresby. Apart from the obvious diving possibilities around the island, it has some excellent walks on the ridge and around the shore. The hotel and rooms are very modern. The airport pickup and drop off to the Tahira jetty went smoothly.

The staff were great. The best experience was Uday Kumar who went above and beyond his duties for me. He went to the airport to retrieve my lost luggage and had it sent to me as quickly as possible.

Beautiful spot. We enjoyed the different activities. Nature around the rooms is impressive. From the room we could even see small manta ray. Staff was flexible and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.

The whole peaceful atmosphere, the sense of freedom after living in Port Moresby, the beauty of the place, the trees and gardens, the wild animals that can be observed (Wallabies, Queen Victoria pigeons), the walk across the island with breathtaking views on ocean and mountains, the kindness of all staff and Managing Director, the absolute quiet

We enjoyed the weekend retreat- the environment, quality and comfort of the room, and customer service was great.

Location, rooms (water villas), swimming pool and dive shop. It was my second stay at Loloata. Even better then the first one. This time I could go for scuba diving and I’m very impressed. Excellent dive boat, excellent dive masters and very good dive sites (outer reef). We have seen leopard sharks, sea snakes, walking shark, white tip sharks, stone fish and lot of small stuff. Great visibility.

Everything was good. The stay. Choice of food. Views from the island. We enjoyed taking the walk around and over the top of the island.

Loloata Island Scuba Resort is just 15 minutes from Port Moresby but guests feel like they're on a distant Melanesian garden isle. Dive Information

Diving & marine life.

Situated behind a barrier reef of the Coral Sea, Loloata is a quick boat ride to many dive sites. Divers are treated to vast coral reefs, massive coral heads, muck diving, wreck diving and many more sites. With 29 known dive sites, the variety keeps even the most veteran dive travelers looking forward to getting back in the water.

While diving is offered year-round, conditions vary depending on time of year. The best diving is from late October through early December, when the water is the calmest and visibility is best. Late December through early April is the wet season, with calm seas but lower visibility due to rain. During late April until late May (the doldrums) the visibility begins to improve and the sea is calm. June through early October is the dry season with great visibility, however, winds create some surface chop on the water.

Since, the water temperatures range from 76F in Aug/Sept to 86F in Mar/April, 3mil wetsuits are recommended for the colder water, and skins during the warmer periods.

Divers visiting Loloata will find an abundance of marine life. Rich coral reefs and wrecks are home to nudibranchs, frogfish, seahorses, shrimp, eels, batfish, anemonefish, cuttlefish, squid, pipefish (like the ornate ghost pipefish), occasional rhinopias and many other Coral Sea favorites. 

Dive Center Information

Loloata has two 30 foot (10 meter)-dive boats that each carry up to 10 divers plus crew. The on-site dive shop has full rental gear (minus lights) as well as new gear sales. A wet area is provided behind the dive center for rinsing and drying dive and camera gear. There's also a hyperbaric chamber in Port Moresby, providing some peace of mind in case of emergency.

Morning boats depart from the jetty at 8 am for two dives, returning midday for lunch. The afternoon boats depart from the jetty at 2 pm and return at about 4:30 pm. Night dives are also available.

My adult daughter spent three days here while waiting to board the Golden Dawn for a trip to the Eastern Fields. I have known several who have stayed here and it came with high recommendation.

We were somewhat limited by weather that limited the diving to one day instead of 2 or 3. The one site that we wanted to get to was Suzy’s Bommie which didn’t happen because of weather. We did have one nice day out and some some decent sites that I enjoyed and we saw some good content underwater.

The dive guiding was good and they guides worked to point out things that were interesting to us. I would rate the diving to be a 6 or 7 on a 10 point scale. For a stopover spot, it was quite good and I would recommend anyone that is leaving on a trip out of PM to spend 3 or 4 days here. My daughter went on the flashlight fish night dive which is very unique and enjoyable.

The resort experience starts when you clear customs at the airport. The hotel was there with a sign waiting for us, so I rate them highly on this important point. The trip is a 45 minute car ride and a 15 boat ride and your arrive at a long dock in a stand alone island.

The rooms were OK, but maybe a touch below what I was expecting. Each room was in a stand alone bungalow with a bed and a hideaway bed that was not so great. Similar to Lembeh Resort, but a notch below.

The resort is very informal with everyone eating at one common table including the owner who chatted with us each night. Nice touch. The food was good, but lacked variety. I like the breakfast and lunch and dinner were buffet style. The resort has a pretty good sized meeting going on which I think pushed the quality of service a bit.

The resort has plenty of animals which are kind of fun. PNG wallabies are in abundance as are a few kinds of decorative birds. I got to breakfast early on my first day and found a wallaby huddled under a dining table. We startled each other when I pulled out my chair.

I would recommend anyone who is coming to PNG to stay here for 2 to 5 days. Some of the diving is quite good. Suzie’s Bommie and some of the other open ocean bombes are very good which I know from earlier dive trips. You will enjoy a unique little island with a lot of personal charm, but very little pretense.

Loloata Island Resort

Loloata offers the unique qualities of convenience and natural beauty. The resort island is only 15 minutes from the international airport in Port Moresby, but you’ll feel like you’re a world away on this beautiful Melanesian garden isle.  The resort operates all year round.

Loloata and its surrounding reefs and islands are the perfect nature study and are regularly visited by botanists, marine biologists and others with a special interest in the flora, fauna and rare marine species.

Accommodations

A short walk away beside the foreshore, the colonial-style elevated unit offers superb facilities and features a wide veranda where you can lounge and take in uninterrupted ocean views, or simply stretch out and fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping the foreshore.

The resort offers two levels of accommodation, with a choice of air-conditioned and non air-conditioned rooms.

A Divers World

Needless to say, in such an aquatic wonderland, there is a world of discovery for snorkelling and scuba diving enthusiasts. Local divers, island guests and the scuba schools enjoy escorted trips to nearby reefs and Lion Island, which is famous for its many species or hard corals.

30 dive sites exposing a range of habitats, wrecks, reef drop offs, passages, bombies, pinnacles, muck sites; good wide angle and macro possibilities.  Most dive sites are within 20 minutes of the resort.

For the initiated, Loloata’s world class scuba services offer adventurous wreck dives throughout Bootless Bay, night dives and superb diving excursions to nearby Horseshoe Reef Marine Park.

The Diving Season

Late December until early April is the wet season: The sea is usually relatively calm, but the visibility declines through the wet season.

Late April until late May is the doldrums: The sea is usually calm and the visibility begins to improve.

Early June until early October is the dry season: Southeast trade winds blow at this time, making the sea sometimes quite choppy, the visibility is quite good.

Late October until early December is the doldrums again: This is when the best diving is to be had with calm seas and good visibility.

• Diving is run all year round and even during bad weather some dive sites are still accessible.
• Water temperature ranges from 25 degrees C (76 degrees F) in August and September up to 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) in March and April
• We advise divers to wear a Lycra skin to prevent sunburn and stings. During the cooler months a 3mm wetsuit or thicker is recommended.

When You’re Not Diving

If you’re the type who likes to play “on water” Loloata offers facilities to help you fish, swim, kayak, windsurf — even surfski!

• Bush walks Early morning and late afternoon are ideal times to go bush walking or stroll along the beach and foreshore. It is possible to course the whole island in about an hour.

Hors d’oeuvre are served on the patio beside the bar every evening promptly at six o’clock.  Dinner on Loloata is a more relaxed, a la natural event offering a selection of international cuisine superbly influenced by more traditional flavours. This is followed by desert with an abundance of freshly roasted Highland Coffee, which is also complimentary any time of the day or night.

Special diets and vegetarian dishes can be accommodated with advance notice. Children’s meals can also be served earlier if adults wish to dine alone.

How to Get There

Port Moresby (Jacksons International Airport) is the nearest airport. Getting to the Island involves a 15 minute car ride from the airport followed by a 10 minute boat ride on one of the Loloata Island Resort private ferries / water taxis.
