History of Makalidurga
The fort was under the control of feudalism from Doddaballapura. After him, it was controlled by the Maratha leader Mr. Shivaji, and by Mr. Peshwa Madhavarao in 1761 AD. Then Venkateshayya, the brother of Haider Ali’s chief Venkattapayya, seized this fort from the Marathas.
“HyderNama,” which was written during Hyder Ali’s time, has several references to the Makali fort.
The famous Tippu Sultan has been credited with strengthening this fort during his administration. Secret ways, weapons, water containers, escape routes, and view towers that were constructed during Tippu’s time still exist, offering up a trove of information for a fellow history buff. Usmaan Saheb was the Amaldaar (revenue officer) of this place during that period. The same is also mentioned in a Gouribidanuru scripture.
On the 10th of September, 1790, Major Goudi orchestrated a surprise attack on this fort and seized it. Francis Bukan, who visited this place after Tippu’s reign, recites the Maakali fort in his reports. By that time, it had become a peaceful place and a hospitable place to many saints and sages.
Why The Name Makali?
Makalidurga is named after a woody medicinal climber, “Makali Beru” (Decalepis Hamiltonii). On the hills, the root extracts called “Maagali” are densely available even now. Over time, the name became “Maakali” or “Makali.” The roots from this endangered plant are used to prepare healthy drinks and in medicines for blood purification.
Makalidurga Forest Official Contact
We recommend Mr. Ganga Raju – +91 6362976110 . Ensure that you have a functioning understanding and can communicate in the regional language, Kannada, as that is all the guide communicates with. Mr. Ganga Raju is punctual and opens the gate at 6 AM sharp every day. He is available at the base if you need any help or in case of emergencies.
Network Availability
Airtel and Jio are the only providers with decent reception of internet and cellular networks even at the summit. No signal was found with the BSNL operator.
ATM Availability
There is no ATM available near the trek starting point. However, you can find ATMs in Doddaballapur town, approximately 15 Km away, so ensure you carry sufficient cash.
Languages Spoken
The regional language, Kannada is the only language spoken by the forest officials and the people in the region.
Parking Availability
A good amount of parking spaces are available at the base of the trek.
Restroom Facilities
Near the parking lot, clean and well-maintained restrooms are available.
Best Time To Visit
During summer, it will be challenging to hike, given the unforgiving scorching heat. The rocks remain slippery during the monsoons and rains. So, the best time to visit Makalidurga is during pre and post-monsoons in the months of May, November, December, and January, especially in the morning hours when the temperature is not too hot.
Although Makalidurga hills can be hiked throughout the year, during summer, we advise you to start the trek as early as 6 AM as it becomes increasingly hot and humid as the day goes by.
How To Reach Makalidurga From Bangalore?
The Makalidurga railway station (Station code: MKL, 2 Km) is the closest railway station. There are trains from the KSR station in Bangalore with a stop at Makalidurga. The train journey is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
You have to walk about 2 km from the station to reach the base of the trek. Watch out for the yellow marking, 54/100 on the track. This signboard indicates the end of the railway trail.

If you have a vehicle, search for the Makalidurga trek starting point on Google Maps. It will lead you straight to the parking area of the trek. Cross the railway track, and you can find the entry gate.
If you are dependent on public transport, there are BMTC buses every 15 mins to the Doddaballapur bus station from the Majestic bus terminus. From Doddaballapur, you can ask the locals, hop on a bus, and get down at the Makalidurga stop or the Makalidurga railway station. The journey from Doddaballapur takes around 20 – 30 mins.

Makalidurga Trek Reviews
Shivank pant.
Makalidurga Trek is a beautiful and easy trek located near Bangalore. The trekking trail is well-maintained and offers picturesque views of the lush green hills, a small lake, and surrounding valleys. It takes around 1-2 hours to reach the summit, and the views from the top are simply breathtaking. Overall, Makalidurga Trek is a great way to spend a day in nature and soak in the scenic beauty of the region.
Trek is relatively easy with the marked route. You can't catch the sunrise from the top in summer as entry only begins by 5 am. The view is quite nice.
The mountain is quite steeper found it pretty tough to climb down. Guides on the tram of Banbanjara were really supportive of us and made sure we were safe. The view is amazing and it's worth it🥰
The trek was arranged nicely and it was completely safe to trek at night. Passing the night and welcoming the morning while trekking in between forests was the best feeling ever. At the peak the views are mesmerizing and the story about the fort from the guide was informative. We spent quite a bit of time at the peak and enjoyed it a lot there.
We had trekked before to the small peaks but night trekking was our first experience and was the best experience. Watching the beauty of nature during the night was worth a try and we loved it.
All our friends decided to trek here in the night and with the transport facility available it was a perfect night outing for us. The guide was great and knew the route well. We saw amazing beautiful views at night with the stars above us. At the top, the feeling was so divine and we got to see Shiva temple as well. It was a memorable experience.
We loved our visit to the Makalidurga top and the views from there. The sunrise view was breathtaking and we had captured many moments there and had the best sunrise view ever.
Trekking to the fort and seeing the Shiva temple early in the morning was indeed an amazing feeling. The views are beautiful and the climate was soothing and peaceful. It was a must-try experience.
A nice short trek. A good trek if you are a beginner. The view from the top is breathtaking.
It was so adventurous and enthralling trek. Wherever you see, it is dark but even the darkness on the paths could not stop us from reaching our destinations. Went on it with friends and had an amazing time. Must try it once. It is different from day trekking.

Makkalidurga is 60kms away from Bengaluru after Dodda Ballapur. Makkalidurga, also known as Gunjur Hill, is situated at Makalidurga village, 12 km from Ghati Subramanya. On the top is a magazine house called as Maddinanave built out of brick and mortar with an oval shaped window-like opening. A succession of dilapidated fort walls and a temple housing the statue of Linga and Nandi tells the tale of Sage Markandeya performing penance here for a long time.
Though the ascent is tedious, the summit offers inquisitive 360 ° landscape views. The jabbing dry grass is an irritant in dry months and is challenging to discover the grass-covered route during the rains. Expect high winds and fog on the hilltop. The awesome sight of the train chugging at the foothills seems straight out of a children's storybook.

My Experience of Makalidurga Trek
I recently went on the Makalidurga trek with one of my friends, and it was an amazing experience. I was pretty excited about this trek as it was going to be my first trekking experience after I moved to Bangalore.
I planned this trek with one of my very old friends and booked the ticket online on this website for both of us.
Note: It's important to book the ticket in advance as there might be availability issues at the last moment.
As decided, we started early in the morning at around 4.30 AM by car and it took 1.5 hours to reach the base of the hill.
After reaching we parked our vehicle in a well-maintained parking area which is there at the starting point of the trek. There is a washroom facility also in case you want to use it.
We started our trek after crossing the railway track and showing our ticket at the base of the trekking point to the forest guards.
The trekking trail was well-defined, and we passed through a small village before starting the ascent. The trail was covered with vegetation, and the views of the surrounding hills and villages were stunning. We took several breaks along the way to catch our breath as the trails were pretty hard in between and enjoyed the scenery.
After about an hour and a half, we finally reached the top of the hill, and the view from the top was breathtaking. We could see miles and miles of lush greenery and several nearby hills. The fort ruins were also impressive, and we explored them and took pictures.
The view was just marvelous and was perfect to take a drone shot. I recently purchased a new drone and after seeing such an amazing view, I took my drone and took amazing shots which you will definitely see in my vlog. Although I couldn't manage to get many shots as I still have to learn a few more techniques on flying a drone.
Overall our experience was amazing and we enjoyed the trek. Everything was perfect, the greenery, the scenic view, and the view from the top of the hill. I truly recommend it to go on this trek if you are in and near Bangalore and need a weekend sporty gateway with your friends and family.
Key Points to Keep in Mind
1. Book a trek ticket in advance on the Karnataka eco-tourism website .
2. Wear comfortable trekking shoes with a good grip to avoid slipping.
3. Carry a small backpack with water bottles, snacks, a first aid kit, sunscreen, and a hat or sunglasses.
4. In winter, carry warm clothing as you may feel cold up on the hill.
5. Follow the trail markers and signs to avoid getting lost, and stick to the designated trail to prevent accidents.
6. Maintain cleanliness in nature. Do not throw any garbage in the open. If you plan to carry snacks with you carry the leftover wrappers and keep the surroundings clean for our next fellow trekkers.
I hope you got all of the details required to attempt the Makalidurga Trek in your coming weekends.
