How To Visit Malin Head, Ireland’s Northernmost Point

Posted on March 21, 2024

Categories Blog , Europe , Hiking , Ireland , Outdoor Adventures

Malin Head is Ireland’s most northerly point and it’s spectacular. When you think about beautiful coastal areas in Ireland, I’m sure that a few spots come to mind: the Cliffs of Moher, Giant’s Causeway , the Ring of Kerry , and the Slea Head Drive on the Dingle Peninsula.

However, on the Wild Atlantic Way in County Donegal, you’ll discover the equally magical Malin Head. More than just a pretty face, there are numerous reasons to add Malin Head to your Irish road trip itinerary.

Malin Head Ireland

I visited Malin Head after my journey around Northern Ireland enroute to Donegal . Even though it was a rainy day, I didn’t let the weather deter my adventures. After all, it’s Ireland and I was bound to encounter a few rainy days at least.

Table of Contents

Malin Head: The Northernmost Point of Ireland

Trail Signs at Ireland's most northerly point

It might seem trivial to visit Malin Head for this reason, but there’s something cool about standing at the most northerly point of a country. The most northern tip of headland is called Banba’s Crown, and you’ll find a weather station there.

It is one of 22 weather stations in the British Isles that comprise the BBC Shipping Forecast. It’s worth noting that there is another small island that’s technically farther north than here, but this is as far north as you can go on the mainland.

From this northerly spot on the Inishowen Peninsula, take a look to the northeast. You may be able to spot Inishtrahull Island off in the distance on a clear day. Even farther in the distance are the Scottish Hebrides.

There is a fairly large parking lot at Malin Head, and we visited at the end of September. On a dreary weekday, we had no issues finding a parking spot. If you visit during the busier summer months, it can get quite busy here. There are also public toilets at Malin Head.

From Easter to September, the Caffe Banba Coffee Van will likely be parked at Malin Head, serving up excellent coffee and fresh baked goods. They take pride in being Ireland’s most northerly bakery and coffee shop.

Go Hiking at Malin Head

Malin Head, Ireland

While I didn’t hike the entire path while I was there (due to time and weather constraints), I suggest walking the entire trail at Malin Head if you can. This out-and-back trail is 2.3km and will take you about 40 minutes to complete. Here is the trail map on AllTrails .

If you enjoy hiking and walking regularly, consider an AllTrails+ membership. There are many benefits to upgrading from a free AllTrails membership to their Pro membership. One main upgrade is being able to download offline maps, which is key when you’re going for walks where you may lose cell signal. Get 45% off an annual AllTrails+ membership , which amounts to only a little over a dollar a month.

From the car park, hike the paved path alongside rugged cliffs and the perilous ocean. I came across some of Ireland’s oldest rocks, sculpted over time by the raging waters.

Soon after walking down the path, I encountered a 30 metre chasm known as Hell’s Hole. It’s an extraordinary subterranean cave, although I merely observed it from above while the sideways rain pelted against my face. There is a small cross nearby that memorializes a French tourist who fell into the sea.

Malin to Mizen

If you’re thinking about embarking on a sizable adventure, consider hiking or cycling from Malin to Mizen. Malin Head is the northernmost point and Mizen Head, in county Cork, is the southernmost point in Ireland.

I visited Mizen Head, too, except I travelled there by car. Typically, the journey takes about 5-6 days to cycle and about 15 days to walk.

Watch the Northern Lights at Malin Head

The Inishowen Peninsula is one of the best places in Ireland to see the northern lights . The area surrounding Malin Head is a dark sky reserve, meaning that you’ll be able to view the northern lights at their most vivid.

While there’s no guarantee that the aurora will pulsate across the sky while you’re visiting, you can check out the aurora forecasts before heading out. There’s a Facebook group called Aurora Alerts Ireland and a Twitter feed with the same name.

The best time of year to view this natural phenomenon is in winter or spring. I didn’t travel here during the evening and didn’t see the northern lights, although I have seen them in my life before. They’re absolutely spectacular, and remains one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Star Wars Filming Location

Star Wars film location

For fans of the Star Wars franchise, parts of Star Wars Episode VIII were filmed at Malin Head. The entire village got caught up in Star Wars fever .

One pub owner painted a mural of Yoda on the side of his establishment. Another local coffee shop includes Star Wars references in its advertising. In one restaurant, they have a storm trooper helmet proudly displayed at the bar.

If you’re a fan of Star Wars, go for a walk at Malin Head and then head over to some local establishments. One unmissable place is Farren’s Bar , which also happens to be Ireland’s most northerly pub. They have some Star Wars art, murals and memorabilia at the pub, and they were happy to have a chat about Star Wars with us!

Landscapes and Wildlife at Malin Head

Malin Head, Ireland

In my opinion, the most important reason to visit Malin Head is for its stunning landscapes. You’ll witness lush hills, craggy cliffs, and crashing waves.

Everywhere you look is so incredibly green or blue. It’s a very peaceful and quiet place to be alone with your thoughts.

You might come across a variety of birds, including Eider ducks, gannets, doves, and other kinds of seabirds. Grey seals live on nearby rocky islets, although you might not be able to spot them from the coastline.

Malin Head Belongs on a Irish Road Trip Itinerary

Lauren at Malin Head

If you’re renting a car and driving all over Ireland like I did, why not make your way up to Malin Head? Public transportation isn’t the best in Ireland. While tour buses can take you all over Ireland easily, I prefer to drive all over the country.

By renting my own car, I can explore everywhere I’d like to go on my own terms. I can stay at certain spots for as long as I’d like and get to travel places that aren’t frequented by the tour buses.

Ireland's most northern point

I didn’t see any group tours or tour buses at Malin Head. It didn’t seem like a really touristy spot, although a few visitors braved the rain to wander around while we did.

Take a look at my guide to renting a car in Ireland for more details on how to do so and everything you need to know. We always use Discover Cars when renting a car on our travels. They allow you to compare prices between car rental companies to find the best rates. Search for your rental car here.

In terms of our itinerary, we visited Malin Head after departing Derry and Northern Ireland. Malin Head was one stop in County Donegal before contining down to Ramelton and then Donegal Town .

Where to Stay in County Donegal

Lough Eske Castle

If you’re checking out County Donegal or northwest Ireland, I highly recommend staying at Solis Lough Eske Castle . First of all, you’ll be sleeping in an actual castle – how cool is that?

It’s a dreamy, historic castle situated on the most gorgeous property. Perhaps you’d like to wander around the lake or pamper yourself at the spa? This is a five-star, luxurious property with many fabulous amenities.

Beautiful! Ireland is extremely stunning. I would love to visit it especially for the landscapes and the castles. I'm not sure about the food, though. Did you discover some authentic cuisines?

Nice! I’ve actually not heard of Malin Head, even though I’ve done a circumnavigation of Ireland and Northern Ireland. What a cool spot though! Hiking or cycling from Malin to Mizen really does sound like it would be an incredible adventure, and you would see so much of the landscape that way. I might add this to my adventure bucketlist!

I knew about Cork but had not heard about the northernmost point of Ireland. Ireland is such a beautiful country, and love how the place looks despite being wet! I loved how you went around on a road trip. I love to travel the same way, either rent a bike or a cab to go at my pace and just how flexible it is to travel! Glad that it is not yet such a touristy place. Would love to visit Malin head someday!

You can see the northern lights at the Inishowen Peninsula? Sign me up! I've been living in Canada for almost 9 years and still haven't seen it yet. If I'm in Ireland, I'll keep that in mind, maybe I'll have a better luck there.

Catch a glimpse, what to expect.

There are 24 species of whales and dolphins known in these waters. We have been keeping them company on a regular basis for many years. This boat tour does not target whales and dolphins specifically, but during navigation we might encounter  minke whale , common dolphin , bottlenose dolphin ,  harbour porpoise ,  basking shark , and sunfish  in Donegal Bay . Sometimes, when encountered, dolphins in the right conditions might play around the boat. Common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are often found in large, socially active groups and are often seen, bow-riding, surfing, lob tailing and breaching. They can leap several metres out of the water. Bottlenose, like many other whales and dolphins, are social animals. They tend to live in family groups called 'schools'. These schools can contain anything from just two or three dolphins to over fifty. Sightings are not guaranteed , as these are wild animals.

We share the area with large colonies of seals that can be observed up close. Harbour seals and grey seals are often seen on the rocks and in the sea caves of west Donegal . The area is also home to large numbers of Duck, Curlew, Oyster Catcher, Heron, Cormorant, Dunlin and Swan. Most visible are Gannets, Guillemots, Cormorant, Great Black-Backed Gulls, Puffins and Kittywakes.

Inishowen Boating Company operates 2 purpose-built fast charter boats from  Bunagee Pier Culdaff .

Inishowen is often described as Ireland in a miniature for its spectacular coastline bounded by Lough Swilly, North Atlantic Ocean and Lough Foyle.

A Tour of this Peninsular is an unforgettable experience along the rugged coastline with unspoilt panoramic views over Lough Swilly culminating at Malin Head the most Northerly point in Ireland where the uninterrupted panoramic views stretch out far as your eyes can see. A truly magnificent place, that also captured the hearts of the location scouts for Star Wars. “The Last Jedi”.  As you continue along the coast of this peninsular that is associated with the song Amazing Grace by John Newton you still have panoramic views from all aspects but this time looking over Lough Foyle towards Derry City. Derry was at one time, the main Port for Emigrants from Donegal making their voyage to the New World. Then it is on through Muff and back through the Gap to Donegal.

The Tour is fully guided with lots of stories, history, folklore and fun along the way with plenty of photography stops.

This tour can also be customised to suit any requirements including Ancestry, historical, Spiritual sites, photography.

Inishowen meaning the Island of Eoghain, predates the formation of County Donegal. An area steeped in history with many historical monuments dating back to early settlements, including Castles, High Crosses and the Granian of Aileach ringfort. An area of spectaculur scenery, at every twist and turn in the road with many sandy beaches including the Five Fingers Strand and Sand Dunes that are regarded as one of the highest in Europe.

Malin Head Walk

Malin Head Walk - 1.4 - 2.0 km - medium

Malin head walk.

The Malin Head Walk goes from Banba’s Crown to the natural break in the rocks called Hell’s Hole and is approximately 650 metres.

Though you can walk a bit further up, to about 1 km. Be very careful on this walk as even though the cliff views are spectacular there are very steep drops on to the rocks which are very close to the path.

It should take around 20 to 30 minutes to complete the walk and though the walk is fairly short it can be quite steep and slippy in places. It can also be very windy as the walk is completely open to the extremes of the Atlantic Ocean.

When you return you may find Caffe Bamba mobile coffee shop at the tower, so why not treat yourself?

Mizen Head: A Guide To Ireland’s Most Southwesterly Point

By Author James March

Mizen Head: A Guide To Ireland’s Most Southwesterly Point

The mighty Mizen Head in Cork is one of Ireland’s most iconic attractions and a visit here is one of the most popular things to do in West Cork .

A wild windswept peninsula with a fascinating history, Mizen Head is a breath-taking (literally!) place to feel the power of the Atlantic Ocean.

Stretching out from the southwest of Cork, it’s also the scene of tales, characters and a ragged beauty that few spots in Ireland can match.

In the guide below, you’ll find everything you need to know if you’re thinking about visiting Mizen Head, from when it opens to the story behind the bridge and the signal station.

Table of Contents

Some need-to-knows before visiting Mizen Head

Now, although a visit to Mizen Head in Cork is pretty straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

One of the most southerly points of the Irish mainland, Mizen Head is located at the tip of the Mizen Head Peninsula in southwest Cork. Around 125km from Cork City, you’re looking at a 2-hour drive down. Take caution when you get to the roads leading to the car park as they can get very narrow.

When you do arrive however, there’ll be plenty of parking for you to choose from. Head to the visitor centre and you should have plenty of space to park up.

3. Opening hours

During the winter months – from November to March – the visitor centre is only open on weekends, from 11am to 4pm. From March 17th to May 31st it’s open daily from 10:30 am – 5pm. It’s then open daily from 10am to 6pm during the peak summer months of June, July and August, before returning to the 10:30 am – 5pm schedule for September and October.

4. Admission

For adults it’s €7.50 while seniors and students can get in for €6. Children under 14 cost €4.50 while children under 5 can go for free. A family group of two adults and up to four children can get in for €25 (prices may change).

5. How long you need here

A typical visit to Mizen Head should last around 1-2 hours, but of course you can spend as long as you want! Don’t rush your visit as there’s plenty to read about and explore.

6. Mizen Head weather

One of the wilder sections of the Wild Atlantic Way , it’s worth dressing appropriately when you visit Mizen Head, even at the height of summer. So be sure to bring a hoody or a light jacket. If you’re here on a rainy day then make sure you wrap up and be aware of the wind gusts at all times – don’t go too near the edges!

A quick history of Mizen Head signal station

Mizen Head

Mizen Head has a bountiful history attached to it and there’s many tales that can discovered if you visit the visitor centre. Here’s an overview of where it all began.

The early days and the first lighthouse

The wild waters off Mizen Head had always been a treacherous place for ships to navigate, but things came to a head (no pun intended!) in 1847 with the sinking of the American liner the SS Stephen Whitney. With the tragic loss of 92 lives, the Irish Light Board decided a lighthouse needed to be built and one has stood at Fastnet Rock since 1854.

The SS Trada

Sadly, the fog and gales off Mizen Head were too much for mighty SS Trada, which sunk on December 22nd, 1908. However, resident engineer Thomas Lord and his fellow workers were able to rescue 63 crew by pulling them up the side of the cliffs. In the ensuing enquiry, the master of the ship blamed the disaster on the lack of a fog signal.

The fog signal and an armed raid

In 1909 a fog signal was established so that, in any fog conditions, a manual charge of explosives was let off at seven and half minute intervals. Those explosives were the target of an armed raid on the 21st of May 1920 and they were stolen in their entirety. Surprisingly, the fog signal wasn’t re-established until February 29th, 1924.

The first Radiobeacon in Ireland

Ireland’s first radiobeacon was installed at Mizen Head on the 1st of January 1931 at a cost of £10,017 (a pretty hefty sum in those days!). Though more modern technology has since been added, the remains of the beacon can still be seen on the hillside in the concrete plinths either side of the bridge. The Medium Frequency Radiobeacon service was discontinued on 1st February 1999.

1930 – 1968

On October 1st, 1959, a powerful light was established at Mizen Head with a strength of 11,400 candelas. Almost 10 years later, on the 10th of October 1968, the range of the light was increased to 16 nautical miles. 1968 had proved to be a pivotal year in Mizen Head’s communication abilities – a racon (radar transponder beacon) had been established in July 1968.

The withdrawal of the Lightkeepers

As technology progressed, the withdrawal of the lightkeepers became an inevitability. The permanent withdrawal of the lightkeepers finally happened in March 1993 when the Mizen Head light was converted to automatic operation. Thankfully, the surplus buildings were able to be converted to create the Mizen Vision visitor centre!

The story behind the Mizen Head Bridge

The story behind the Mizen Head bridge (pictured on the left above) is an interesting one. Separated by rocky sea inlet, it was decided in 1907 that there needed to be a bridge to span the gap between Cloghane Island and the mainland.

Around 150ft above sea level, the Mizen Head bridge was completed in 1910 and is one of the most interesting examples of early reinforced concrete construction in Ireland.

The reason for this is that it had a longer lifespan than steel in Mizen Head’s salty fog and sea spray. The old Mizen Head bridge lasted almost 100 years before engineers surveying it deemed it unsafe and it was closed overnight in February 2005.

Enveloped by scaffolding for three years, the funds to build a new Mizen Head bridge weren’t secured until 2008, which is crazy when you consider it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Cork .

The bridge was demolished and reconstructed using concrete and reinforced steel between October 2009 and December 2010, before being finally opened in August 2011 by Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar.

Things to do at Mizen Head

There’s plenty of things to see and do at Mizen Head in Cork, from magnificent views to a nice coastal walk.

Below, you’ll find some stuff to keep you busy when you arrive (just make sure to check the weather at Mizen Head in advance of your visit).

1. Kick things off with coastal views

After leaving the visitor centre, you’ll come to a little opening in the steel fence that leads down towards the cliffs. Although the ground is nice and smooth, it can get quite steep so take care.

You’ll eventually come to a little viewing platform where you’ll get some truly epic vistas! It’s important to note that the walk back up to the visitor centre is very taxing, so it won’t suit anyone with low levels of fitness or limited mobility.

2. The Mizen Head bridge

Mizen Head signal station

Though useful to get from the mainland to Cloghane Island, the views while you’re actually on the Mizen Head bridge itself are stunning.

With the waves crashing and the gales blowing as you’re suspended 150ft above the wild Atlantic waters, you can get a true sense of the natural power of the conditions in this remarkable part of the world.

You’ll also get more eye-level views of the rugged cliffs as they fall away into the distance. And don’t forget to look out for seals and their pups on the rocks below!

3. The Mizen Head signal station

Mizen Head lighthouse

Despite not looking like a traditional tall lighthouse (check out the ferry tours to Fastnet Rock for that sort of thing), Mizen Head’s lighthouse (or signal station) is still the centrepiece of a trip here.

From the signal station not only will you have the sweeping panoramas of the Wild Atlantic Way, but you’ll be able to have a true sense of what it was like for ships passing by through here before the jet age changed everything – and if the visibility is poor then you’ll get an even more vivid idea!

4. Keep an eye out for dolphins and whales

humpback whale

There’s also an array of interesting wildlife to look out for at Mizen Head depending on what time of year you visit, especially Dolphins and Whales.

You can get a closer look at some of Cork’s amazing marine life by taking one of the boat tours from Baltimore and a couple of other spots along the coast, but you’ll also be able to see their appearances from Mizen Head’s vantage point.

Minke and Fin Whales can be seen from the early summer months onwards, while Humpback Whales join in the fun from around August to January.

Related read:  Check out our guide to whale watching in West Cork (there’s info on tours, the best time to do it and more)

5. The Mizen Head visitor centre

the visitor centre

The Mizen Head visitor centre is where’ll you’ll be able to get a real sense of Mizen Head’s history and what life was like for the lighthouse keepers of yesteryear.

In fact, they’ve actually reconstructed the living quarters of a keeper, complete with maps of the era and a chart of what his daily routine would have been.

You’ll also be able to learn more about the grizzly shipwrecks that occurred in the area, such the aforementioned SS Stephen Whitney and SS Trada. There’s information on the interesting story of nearby Fastnet Lighthouse too.

6. Mizen Café

Mizen Café

Photo via Mizen Head Signal Station on Facebook

Of course, having come all this way, you’ll want some refreshments and the Mizen Café is just the ticket.

Their amazingly fresh fish and chips is the obvious choice if you’re in the mood for a proper feed, but there’s also a delicious selection of home baked cakes and pies if you want something a little smaller and sweeter.

Things to do near Mizen Head

One of the beauties of Mizen Head is that it’s a short spin away from many other notable landmarks of Ireland .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from Mizen Head (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Visit Brow Head

brow head county cork

At a latitude of 51.43ºN, Brow Head has the distinction of being the most southerly point of mainland Ireland (beating Mizen Head by a mere 9 metres!). Only a short journey from Mizen Head, there’re some deadly scenic walks in this area featuring the ruins of some old mining houses along the way (this was a famous mining area from the mid-19th century until 1906).

2. Barleycove Beach

Located in a sheltered bay between Mizen Head and the Lyroe Peninsula, the gorgeous sweep and sand dunes of Barleycove Beach were actually created by an 18th century tsunami! Relax on the golden sands, go for a walk along the glorious coast or grab a serious feed at the nearby Beach Bar. There’s a reason this is one of the best beaches in West Cork

3. Nearby towns and villages

There are several towns and villages a stone’s throw from Mizen Head. Crookhaven is 15 minutes away. Schull is a 29-minute drive away. Ballydehob is 40 minutes down the road and Skibbereen is a 52-minute drive away.

4. Cape Clear Island

Not only is Cape Clear Island Ireland’s southernmost inhabited island, it’s also an official Gaeltacht area with its own unique identity. Reachable by ferry from Baltimore and Schull, you’ll be treated to a splendid view of the rugged coastline and – if you’re lucky – some whales or dolphins along the way! Some other nearby islands include Bere Island , Sherkin Island and Whiddy Island .

Unspoilt beauty

Take a journey as far north as you can go, and you’ll reach the edge of Europe – otherwise known as the wild, rugged and romantic Malin Head. The start (or end, depending on your point of view) of the Wild Atlantic Way, Malin Head has long been renowned for its epic coastal scenery, thriving birdlife and historical curiosities. And though isolated, you’ll never feel lonely on this remote peninsula, as you’ll quickly find the locals give a warm welcome to those who come to enjoy the unspoiled scenery of their home.

Wildlife wonders

Donegal may be nicknamed "The Forgotten County"’, but its remoteness means it remains a place of unspoiled beauty, where wildlife flourishes in pure nature. Take a boat tour from Bunagee Pier to see a thrilling range of marine wildlife, including seals, basking sharks and even dolphins, if you’re lucky. Or head to Inch Fowl Reserve , a birdwatching paradise where geese, swans, ducks and other waders gather at panoramic lakes. And the land itself holds its own natural gems – Ballyhillin, a unique raised beach, is well known for its semi precious stones.

Walk in the footsteps of Jedi

The location scouts for Star Wars knew a good thing when they saw it and cast this secluded beauty in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Visitors and locals alike marvelled at the Millennium Falcon perched on the cliffs and storm troopers roaming the hills, and the cast and crew were in awe of the incredible scenery and warm welcome they received. They took to the area like natives, with actor Mark Hamill popping in for refreshments at Farren’s Bar . And they left Malin Head as everyone should – leaving no trace behind them.

Myths and legends

On the island of Ireland you’ll find that wherever you go, myths and legends follow and at Malin Head this is no different. At the very tip of the headland is Banba’s Crown , named after Banba, the patron goddess of Ireland. And Grianán of Aileach , a stunning stone ring fort, is linked to the mythological tribe of the Tuatha Dé Danann – worshippers of the god Dagda, who is said to have ordered the building of a stone fort to act as a burial monument to his son. Wander the landscapes of Inishowen, and you’ll find fascinating folklore at every turn...

Ireland’s incredible natural phenomena

Northern Lights, limestone landscapes and giant’s footsteps – discover Ireland’s natural wonders.

Chasing the Northern Lights

Picture this: a calm, clear evening. The sun sets below the ocean. Then, suddenly, the skies light up with rolling waves of neon pink, vibrant green and piercing blue – the Aurora Borealis. Here, at the edge of Europe, the Inishowen Peninsula  has almost perfect conditions for witnessing the phenomenon that is the Northern Lights. So join stargazers, light chasers and astrophotographers on the quiet beaches of Inishowen and watch the skies come alive with colour.

History in the waters

Banba’s Crown, while a place of mythology, is also strongly linked to history: known locally as “The Tower”, a clifftop tower was built in 1805 as part of a string of buildings around the Irish coast to guard against a possible French invasion. More modest are the nearby World War II lookout posts – Malin Head was one of 83 coastal locations used to provide a picture of wartime events along the Irish coastline. And as the seas off Malin Head has the largest amount of U-boats in the world and the largest amount of sunken ocean going liners, people often travel here to go wreck diving and witness the drama and history lying beneath the waters.
