Live reviews

Best known for his 1983 pop hit ‘Maniac’ from the movie Flashdance, Michael Sembello’s musical repertoire has diversified in quite a range of directions since then.

Over the span of his career, you’re more likely to find Sembello behind the scenes, having scored notable movies like Cocoon, Gremlins, and Independence Day, while also producing music with such prolific artists as Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, and Diana Ross. He’s also played backup guitar for the likes of Stevie Wonder.

His self-released work includes 1983’s Bossa Nova Hotel– his biggest hit– which featured Maniac, but he’s had a steady stream of album releases since then, including 1992’s Caravan Dreams, and 2003’s The Lost Years, his last full album release to date. He also formed a jazz rock band in the 90’s, The Bridge, which released only a single album. A bit more recent is his 2014 single, ‘There’s A Reason For This’, although even this recent release suffers from a definitive 80’s, Michael Bolton-eqsue ballad sound.

His ventures into movie scoring mean he doesn’t perform live shows very often, but his range of 80’s syncopated synth to 90’s soft rock, jazzy power ballads have most recently found success in Japan, which is where he last performed a string of shows in 2010. If his style of music is your kind of thing, grab your lighters and keep an eye out for upcoming gigs.

Michael Sembello

Michael Andrew Sembello  (born April 17, 1954) is an American Grammy-award winning and Oscar nominated singer, musician, songwriter, composer and producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Sembello was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his 1983 song "Maniac", which he sang and co-wrote. The song reached number-one in the United States and notably featured on the 1984 Grammy Award winning Motion Picture soundtrack for "Flashdance."

Sembello began his career as a session Guitarist, then became a solo-artist, songwriter, composer and producer.

Sembello was born and raised in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, a western suburb of Philadelphia. He studied guitar with jazz great Pat Martino.

Sembello began his career in music as a session musician, working with increasingly high-profile artists as a guitarist. By age 17 he was working professionally with Stevie Wonder on electric and acoustic guitar as a studio player on Wonder's  Fulfillingness' First Finale . He continued the same year, chosen as one of the core artists who worked on  Songs in the Key of Life , an ambitious double album that took two years to create. He was credited as lead and rhythm guitarist on most of the tracks, and shares songwriting credit with Wonder on the song "Saturn". The list of pop music personalities he worked with, or wrote for, includes Stevie Wonder (from 1974 to 1979), George Benson, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Sérgio Mendes, The Temptations, Stanley Clarke, David Sanborn, Miguel Mateos and New Edition among many others.

Sembello wrote a song, "Carousel", which Michael Jackson recorded for his 1982 album  Thriller , but it was replaced on the track list by "Human Nature".

Sembello released his first solo album,  Bossa Nova Hotel , in 1983. The song "Maniac" from that album, which he co-wrote with his keyboardist Dennis Matkosky, was selected for inclusion in the blockbuster film  Flashdance . "Maniac" went on to become the second best charting song from the soundtrack (after the title track) and the ninth biggest single of 1983. That soundtrack was rewarded with a Grammy Award in 1983 for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special.

Sembello produced guitarist Jennifer Batten's first solo album,  Above Below and Beyond  in 1992. In 1994, he produced Argentine singer Valeria Lynch's album  Caravana de Sueños  (1994), and co-wrote the title song with Puerto Rican Wilkins Vélez.

Sembello has spent much of his career writing songs for movies and film, some of which have achieved blockbuster commercial success. His songs are featured in the films  Cocoon ,  Independence Day ,  Gremlins ,  The Monster Squad  and  Summer Lovers , among many others. His song "Gravity" from the film  Cocoon  was accompanied by a music video directed by  Cocoon  director Ron Howard and included an appearance by Howard in a scripted fictional foreword to the video.

In 2008, Michael Sembello worked with saxophonist Michael Lington on his album  Heat , which was nominated as Jazztrax Album of the Year for 2008. Michael and his brother Danny Sembello penned three songs with Lington for the project. Sembello travels to Brazil frequently and is good friends with Daniel Jobim, the grandson of legendary composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Sembello has recorded his vocals in six languages and is continually writing, producing and releasing albums. In May 2009, the album  Moon Island  was released on EMI Japan. The album consists of American pop songs given new arrangements with a strong Brazilian influence.

Best of 80s Party Hits

Best known for his 1983 chart-topping hit " Maniac ," which first appeared on the multi-platinum Flashdance soundtrack, Michael Sembello is an American solo artist, songwriter, and producer whose music incorporates elements of pop/rock, dance, jazz, and soft-rock. Born on April 17, 1954, in the Philadelphia suburb of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, he became a versatile guitarist at a young age and began playing with Stevie Wonder at 17 years old. He appeared on Stevie Wonder's 1974 release, Fulfillingness' First Finale , as well as 1976's Songs in the Key of Life , both of which won Album of the Year at the annual Grammy Awards. He also began working as a songwriter, co-writing songs like Stevie Wonder's " Saturn " and the Michael Jackson deep cut " Carousel ." However, it was his appearance on 1983's Flashdance: Original Soundtrack from the Motion Picture that transformed him from a behind-the-scenes collaborator into a popular solo artist. " Maniac ," his Oscar-nominated contribution to the popular film, became a Number 1 hit in both America and Canada. It also cracked the Top 10 in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, and Switzerland. Months after the soundtrack's release, Michael Sembello released the solo album Bossa Nova Hotel , which included the Top 40 hit " Automatic Man " as well as a different version of " Maniac ." Although follow-up releases like 1986's Without Walls and 1992's Caravan Of Dreams failed to chart, Michael Sembello continued appearing on popular film soundtracks for more than a decade, contributing music to Cocoon , Gremlins , Independence Day , and other movies. He also explored genres outside of the pop/rock field, performing jazz with The Bridge during the late-1990s and recording Brazilian-influenced covers of pop hits with The Bossa Nova Hotel during the 2000s.

Whitney Houston

Movies and music have been a natural combination ever since sound was first added to moving images. Whether a film is a tear-jerking drama, an action-packed thriller or a side-splitting comedy, the right song at the right moment will always elevate the impact of a scene. Beyond that, many songs written or recorded for films have stood on their own, with the popularity of some eclipsing the movies that inspired them.

One of the most famous examples comes from 1992’s The Bodyguard . Though not everyone has seen the film, people of all generations can recognize its massive single: Whitney Houston’s smash cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” John Travolta’s 1977 classic disco film Saturday Night Fever produced several of the Bee Gees’ biggest hits — including “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever.” And let’s be honest: Damn near no one has heard of Ready to Wear from Robert Altman (the iconic director of Gosford Park, Nashville, M*A*S*H ), but if Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper” comes on, you’ll at least be singing along to the naaaa na na na naaaaa s.

Here’s a look back at the 75 biggest Hot 100 hits that arose from being featured on the silver screen. This list includes only the renditions that were recorded for films, or first released in conjunction with a film. So you won’t find LeAnn Rimes’ version of “How Do I Live” (Trisha Yearwood sang it in Con Air ), Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” (Kasey Cisyk was heard in the film of the same name) or Percy Faith’s “Theme From A Summer Place” (composer Max Steiner’s version was heard in that 1959 film).

This ranking is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years.

Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong" in 'An Officer and a Gentleman'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (three weeks), Peak Date: 11/6/82

Cocker & Warnes recorded this rock ballad for the Richard Gere/Debra Winger romantic drama. The song brought Will Jennings, Jack Nitzsche and Buffy Sainte-Marie an Oscar for best original song. Listen here.

Isaac Hayes, "Theme From Shaft" in 'Shaft'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (two weeks), Peak Date: 11/20/71

More than half a century after its release, the theme song to the classic blaxploitation film Shaft still sounds funky, fresh and unstoppable. The song made Hayes the first Black composer to win an Oscar for best original song. Listen here.

Whitney Houston, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" in 'Exhale'

Whitney Houston

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (one week), Peak Date: 11/25/95

Babyface wrote this soulful ballad for Houston to sing in her second feature film, Waiting to Exhale . Of her 11 Billboard Hot 100 toppers, it was Houston’s only single to enter the chart at No. 1.

Bobby McFerrin, "Don't Worry Be Happy" in 'Cocktail'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (two weeks), Peak Date: 9/24/88

McFerrin penned this good-natured song that urged people not to sweat the small stuff. The tune wasn’t written for 1988’s Cocktail , which starred Tom Cruise, but was released in tandem with the hit film, entering the Hot 100 the same week the film was released. The song won Grammys for record and song of the year. Listen here.

Diana Ross, "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)" in 'Mahogany'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (one week), Peak Date: 1/24/76

This inspirational ballad became Ross’ third No. 1 solo hit in 1976. It was co-written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser, the latter of whom had also co-written Ross’ second No. 1, “Touch Me in the Morning,” in 1973. Mahogany , Ross’ second film, wasn’t successful at the box office, but this elegant song had a life of its own. Listen here.

Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" in 'Dirty Dancing'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (one week), Peak Date: 11/28/87

Medley and Warnes sang this midtempo ballad in the climactic scene in the Patrick Swayze/Jennifer Grey film Dirty Dancing. It won an Oscar for best original song and helped the soundtrack album remain atop the Billboard 200 for 18 nonconsecutive weeks. Listen here.

Rose Royce, "Car Wash" in 'Car Wash'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (1 week); Peak Date: 1/29/77

This smash was the biggest hit in years for Motown legend Norman Whitfield. Whitfield wrote the song and its follow-up, “I Wanna Get Next to You” (which also made the top 10), for the 1976 comedy film of the same name with an ensemble cast that included Richard Pryor and Franklyn Ajaye. Listen here .

Frankie Valli, "Grease" in 'Grease'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (two weeks), Peak Date: 8/26/78

Barry Gibb wrote the title song for the John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John summer blockbuster Grease . In an inspired move, the movie cast a star who was more or less from the era depicted in the film to sing it. This should have been an Oscar contender for best original song, but only Newton-John’s showcase ballad “Hopelessly Devoted to You” was nominated. Listen here .

Nelly, P. Diddy and Murphy Lee, "Shake Ya Tailfeather" in 'Bad Boys II'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (four weeks), Peak Date: 9/6/2003

Boasting the so-called “War Chant” heard at many a football game and the line, “Is that your ass or your mama half reindeer?”, this hip-hop ass-shaker from the smash film Bad Boys II shimmied its way up to No. 1 on the Hot 100 for four weeks. Listen here .

Eric Clapton, "Change the World" in 'Phenomenon'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 5 (two weeks), Peak Date: 8/17/1996

First recorded by Wynonna Judd, Eric Clapton’s cover of “Change the World” (produced by Babyface) from the John Travolta romantic fantasy Phenomenon became one of the guitar legend’s biggest ‘90s hits, reaching No. 5 on the Hot 100. Listen here .

Ini Kamoze, "Here Comes the Hotstepper" in 'Ready to Wear'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (two weeks), Peak Date: 12/17/1994

Jamaica’s Ini Kamoze drew upon Cannibal and the Headhunters’ “Land of 1000 Dances” for this Hot 100 topper that began to take off after its inclusion in iconoclastic filmmaker Robert Altman’s 1994 Paris Fashion Week satire Prêt-à-Porter, released as Ready to Wear in the U.S. Listen here.

Prince & the Revolution, "Let's Go Crazy" in 'Purple Rain'

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (two weeks), Peak Date: 9/29/1984

Prince & the Revolution’s “Let’s Go Crazy” serves as the perfect hyped-up yet uplifting opener to Purple Rain — both the album and the movie of the same name. The track didn’t just top the Hot 100 — it shot to No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Dance Club Play charts, too.  Listen here .

Vangelis, "Chariots of Fire" in 'Chariots of Fire'

Vangelis

Hot 100 Peak Position: 1 (one week), Peak Date: 5/08/1982

Even if you haven’t seen the film it came from, nearly everyone can recognize Vangelis’ “Chariots of Fire.” The track has undoubtedly become the backing to any athletic triumph — including its own, as it earned the highest marks on the Hot 100 in 1982. Listen here .

On June 8, 2010, voters in Santa Clara approved Measure J, allowing Santa Clara to lease the land previously used as an overflow parking lot by the Great America theme park. This allowed the 49ers Stadium Authority to begin plans to construct Levi's Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. Funds for the project were secured on December 13, 2011, and construction started in April 2012.

Santa Clara was chosen after plans to build a new stadium at Candlestick Point, an effort to replace the aging and outdated Candlestick Park, failed when the 49ers and the city of San Francisco could not agree on the new stadium's location. The 49ers offices and training facility have been located in Santa Clara since 1987, so that was the logical next choice.

Tip: August through October can be very warm. Dress accordingly, use sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.

Levi's Stadium and the San Francisco Bay Area were chosen as the host stadium and city for Super Bowl 50, which took place on February 7, 2016.

michael sembello tour

The stadium will host Super Bowl 60 on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Stadium Name

On May 9, 2013, the 49ers and Levi Strauss & Co. announced a 20-year naming rights proposal to the Santa Clara Stadium Authority. The deal is worth $220 million, making Levi Strauss & Co. a corporate sponsor of the 49ers. At the time, the $11 million per season deal was the second-largest among current NFL naming rights agreements.

Over 180 different food items are served at Levi's Stadium, with 17 types of quick-service concepts named for exactly what they're selling. They include Franks (nitrate-free, with a vegan option), Burgers (with American Kobe beef and vegan burgers), Curry (Indian-style, with spiced naan, cassava chips, and varieties like Rajasthani lamb and vegan navy bean and kale), Tortas, Soft Serve, Barbecue (pulled pork or pulled jackfruit), Panini and Steamed Buns (Asian-style bao in Peking duck, pork belly, and vegan portobello varieties).

Many stands also offer kids' meals, including pizza, hot dogs, and chicken tenders. Vegans and vegetarians also have plenty of options.

On the upper concourse, there is a Mondo Burrito, a taproom with 42 different draft beers, and many places have wine available. There is also Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak & Pub, a high-end steakhouse with a casual pub that is also open on non-game days.

Members of the press are provided three meals on game days within the Verizon Press Level.

Team Store at Levi's Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers' flagship team store is located inside Intel Gate A at Levi's Stadium. The year-round store is 13,000 square feet and features officially licensed team merchandise.

  • * Monday to Sunday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Closed Wednesdays

There are also numerous smaller stores and kiosks located throughout the stadium.

michael sembello tour

Team Store Online

You can also purchase merchandise from the San Francisco 49ers Official Online Store .

Tip: While the Levi's Stadium store offers a larger selection than the official online store, much of the inventory is available there. If you see something that you like at the Levi's Stadium store, you can check for it online. You will likely find it cheaper, and it will be delivered to your home.

49ers Museum

Levi's Stadium is home to a 20,000-square-foot interactive museum that highlights the San Francisco 49ers' rich history in the Bay Area and consists of 11 gallery and exhibit spaces. You can stop by the Morabito Theater to watch the history of the 49ers on a 50-by-18-foot Sony 4K screen. The Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame houses life-size statues of the 49ers enshrined in Canton, Ohio. You can even see a re-creation of legendary 49ers head coach Bill Walsh's first office located in Redwood City.

There is a learning center for younger fans and interactive features on the bottom level of the museum. For example, you can practice your field goal skills by kicking through a virtual field goal, practice your endzone dance, learn to cheer with the Gold Rush cheerleaders, try your hand at broadcasting, and try on a 49ers uniform.

There is a fee to enter the museum.

michael sembello tour

There is stadium-wide Wi-Fi available for all fans. You can use it to access statistics, replays, and more via the stadium's official app .

You can also order food from your seat and either pick it up or have it delivered to you for a small fee. The options available for in-seat delivery are limited. You place an order and pay on your mobile device, an estimate for the delivery time is given, a code is made available on your device, and you show that code to the person who delivers your order.

Tip: Allow more time for your order to be delivered than the given estimate. The estimate can be lower than the actual delivery time.

You can also access mobile ticketing, turn-by-turn directions throughout the stadium, and view wait times for concession stands and restrooms. It is estimated that fans within the stadium are at most 10 feet away from a Wi-Fi signal.

Data speeds within the stadium during game time average about 60 Mbps for both download and upload.

Tip: Just to let you know, some phone carriers may be able to beat those speeds in the area of the stadium. For example, T-Mobile offers higher download speeds in the area. Game time speeds will vary.

Solar Power

Levi's Stadium features 49 solar arrays provided by NRG Energy on the roof of the facility to form the NRG Solar Terrace. It also features NRG Solar Bridges that fans cross to access the stadium. These all consist of over 1,150 solar panels. They gather enough energy to power the stadium for every San Francisco 49ers home game.

There are 10 clubs located within Levi's Stadium, with the largest being the United Club located on the 300 level of the Suite Tower. It runs the entire length of the field.

Family-Friendliness

Levi's Stadium offers family restrooms for parents and their small children. Like the other restrooms in the stadium, there can be a wait time for access.

The stadium can be loud for smaller children, especially during player introductions. You may consider bringing baby and infant ear muffs.

While the list of things that cannot be brought into the stadium is long, and you can only bring in clear, larger bags, diaper bags are allowed.

Tip: While the inner concourse is often crowded during games, the outer concourse is not. If you need to, walk there to get around the stadium.
