Mitchell's Ice Cream

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Who says ice cream is for warm weather? This ice cream is good all year. I love to go to the shop on 25th where I can watch ice cream being made. Great for parties. I can't pick a favorite because I get a different... flavor each time. Never been disappointed. More

Despite being very busy when we arrived, our whole group was served and devouring ice creams within 10 minutes of walking in the door. Portions are very generous and everyone was very happy with the delicious flavours. I went for the Turtle Sundae and would... definitely recommend, what a treat. Service with a smile from all employees was welcomed too. More

waited to celebrate a birthday until Mitchell's came back online for ice cream cakes. Worth every day we waited, Ordered the cookies & cream. Really good. Not too rich or overpowering. Nice frosting top. Chocolate cake on the bottom layer was a perfect compliment to... hold everything together.....firm and just a bit chewy. No way do you only have one piece of this masterpiece. Cant wait to try other flavors. The buzz is real...get to Mitchell's and support the local economy.......justification enough to treat yourself. Highly recommend. More

Wow. This place is amazing. I got a scoop each of dark roast coffee and pralines and cream. Both were exceptional. The coffee flavor was less sugary and more coffee-true than other coffee ice creams I have had. And the pralines and cream flavor was... to die for - with gobs of caramel mixed in. My husband raved about the wild berry crumble as well. Also fun to watch the folks making more ice cream in the factory behind the counter while waiting for your order. A must visit in Ohio City! More

Oh, oh, oh. Utterly wonderful. We walked over there after visiting the West Side Market, so it was a perfect ending to a good morning. There is outdoor seating to the side of the building, so you can enjoy the ice cream and watch the... world go by. I don't know enough about the range of ice cream in Ohio to get into the debate as to whether Mitchell's is the best, but, having explored ice cream in several states, I have to say it must be up there near the top. A Cleveland institution! Not good for people on a low sugar diet My trip to Cleveland takes me to Mitchell's Ice Cream, a legendary ice cream shop on W. 25th in Ohio City. Having lurked in places like Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Silver Lake, Los Angeles,... I'm kinda leery of "hipster" sections of major cities. But I went past my leeriness on a sunny, crisp day in June. I was carrying luggage and at least three bags. So my ordering went by a bit awkwardly. But the girl at the counter was friendly and not stereotypically hip. I ordered a small sundae of vegan chocolate butter ice cream, with a cherry, vegan marshmallows, and no nuts. The sundae is small and cute. But not for diabetics or people watching their sugar intake. I stopped eating the sundae one third of the way. I'm awaiting the bipolar causing sugar crash. Mitchells is definitely a legend in Cleveland. But I can't eat anymore of their ice cream. I'm too much of a humorless health nut More

We did the tour that is offered on weekend mornings. We got to see behind the scenes of the ice cream being made, hear the history of the building and owners, and taste test their flavors. You also got a free single scoop with the... tour. Only $10 a person and very fun. The ice cream was great & its no wonder its such a popular spot! Go early to avoid the line More

I had the lemon berry yogurt, and it truly was one of the best ice creams I’ve ever tasted. Every bite was just bursting with bright lemon and berry flavor - it tasted even better than it looked! My husband had the turtle sundae and... even with all the delicious toppings, you could tell the vanilla bean ice cream within was still amazing in its own right. We enjoyed it out on the patio with our pup. Definitely worth a stop! More

Very cool looking place. Theater marquee sign. A train elevated inside going around the shop, and possibly the creamiest ice cream I’ve ever had. my daughter went with the sherbet, my wife and I both went with the vegan buckeye, which was incredible. I probably... only needed a half a scoop, but one with the full scoop it was so good. Yes gluten-free options were available. More

Amazing place. Staff was friendly. The choices were huge. Portions were giant! Loved seeing them hand make the icecream... so interesting. The icecream itself was some of the best I've ever had! Thanks so much.

Wonderful seasonal selection and decent prices. Love the fact you can see the creamery at work behind the scenes. Plenty of scoopers to handle the stream of visitors. Tried the Lavender Honey (amazing) and Banana Creme Pie. Highly recommend stopping here.

Mitchell's ice cream is the best in Cleveland! We had our wedding shower in the upstairs space at the Ohio City location and it was a dream. The staff was so helpful and kind. Everything went perfectly! Plus, the ice cream dessert was a huge... hit with guests! More

No I'm not exaggerating, one visit to Mitchell's and you will be a believer. Where do I start? More flavors than you could ever dream of, the fact that they allow you to taste any flavor offered, friendly staff, really cool old renovated movie theater,... possibly the cleanest floors, seating area and bathrooms that I have ever seen in a restaurant and in a great neighborhood--Ohio City! Have dinner at one of the great restaurants (casual or fine), grab a drink at Great Lakes Brewery and have dessert at Mitchell's. If you go on Saturday, throw in the West Side Market and you have a near perfect day? What could be better? Walk around the joint and look into the work area through the windows to see how the ice cream is processed, made right on site, packaged and all--it is so clean that it looks like a movie set, almost fake! Even the workers are immaculately clean! Anyway, this place is a landmark--a historical building in a really hip neighborhood with a product that will knock your socks off. As I was enjoying my ice cream, I kept asking myself; "Is this for real?". No lie--simply the best! More

Carmel brownie ice cream amazing. Grab some and enjoy. Cute little spot that had great ice cream and friendly staff. They allow you to taste and didn’t rush us.

The ever revolving flavors at Mitchell's keeps me coming back, and their use of all natural fresh ingredients can easily be tasted. This location is great for kids as you can see live production of ice cream through huge windows.

This ice cream place is on a plaza adjacent to the university and close to numerous attractions. I waited in line for a bit. I asked for an explanation on what it meant to order a "taster's duo" or trio, but couldn't get a clear answer, and I didn't want the others behind me to wait longer, so I just ordered. I ended up getting a seasonal mint oreo instead of the mint chocolate chunk that I ordered; not a huge error so I just went with it. Setting service aside, it was quality ice cream, with a rich mint flavor and my cherry chocolate chunk being quite chunky. They had a few vegan flavors and sundae options and things. Seating was ample outdoors as well as indoors. As premium locally flavored ice creams go, it was quality stuff.

Oh WOOOOOOOOW! Let's start with that. I was looking for a sweet treat and as I was walking around the food court, I noticed this ice cream shop. The service is great and the flavors fantastic. I think I ate most of mine before exiting the parking lot... Yep, that good!

After dinner, my hubby decided on dessert. Of course I looked on Yelp and found Mitchell's Ice Cream shop. What a true gem we found. The ice cream selections and toppings variety was absolutely amazing. I opted for The vegan salted caramel pecan ice cream sundae and added marshmallows, salted pecans, whipped cream, and a cherry in top. The taste was extra creamy and delightful. 5/5 stars overall.

Delicious ice cream , I tried a few flavors before settling on pistachio flavor which was nutty and creamy. .... A tad bit sweet for me but it's dessert and most people eat because it's sweet. The burst of flavors in my mouth and the generous single scoop was shared by my family. Will certainly revisit!

Love love love Mitchell's! I've lost track of how many times I've gone here. The service is always so friendly and they let you try as many flavors as you want before choosing! The ice cream itself is some of the best I've ever had - every single flavor I've tried actually tastes like the thing it says it will taste like and has huge chunks of chocolate, cookies, brownies, etc. depending on your flavor. My favorite is the caramel fudge brownie but I love trying the new seasonal flavors too! They also have unique vegan flavors which I have not tried but have heard are good!

Visited Mitchell's for the first time after months of having people tell me that it was fantastic! It comes with little surprise then when I say I have to concur. I'm not the biggest fan of ice-cream but even I can recognize their craft. With a wide range of flavors and sizing options to choose from, I went with the junior scoop of tiramisu. It was definitely on the chocolatier side of tiramisu's rather than a lighter and creamy flavor but I'd still trust them over most other shops in Cleveland.

Two visits in two days to this awesome ice cream shop :-) Delicious ice cream!! Nice variety of flavors both seasonal and regular...prices are very reasonable and scoops are definitely worthwhile. Enjoyed coffee chocolate chunk in a waffle cone; ice cream scoop was so large that ice cream was at the bottom of the cone. ($6) Two family members had their taster's duo. Second time around, I ordered chocolate peanut butter cup. Just as yummy as the first day. Great service that's friendly and attentive. Fun ambiance; room to enjoy your ice cream while chatting with friends inside or eat on benches outside. Location is very conveniently located to Case Western Reserve University bookstore. Give it a try...you will not be disappointed.

One of my FAVORITE ice cream businesses to go to. This location is super nice! Has great views and the parking is super easy and right next to the place! I loved being able to walk around while eating ice cream.

mitchell's ice cream tour cleveland

If you like ice cream and are ever in Cleveland, you must check out Mitchell's! Love the flavors here (can never go wrong with pistachio) and it feels more exclusive than Jeni's which is also good, but is available even outside of Columbus. They are also so generous with the serving sizes, one scoop is plenty of ice cream! Staff is friendly, shop is clean, bathrooms are also available. Suggest parking in the retail lot which can be a bit difficult to find if relying on google maps.

More

The Cleveland 50: Mitchell's Ice Cream Opens

Even in chilly February, customers sit at tables topped with fluted flower vases beside pearl-cast window trim at Ohio City’s Mitchell’s Ice Cream. The largest of nine exclusively northeast Ohio locations, the flagship houses the kitchen where it all comes together — service, community and flavorful imagination, a vision 23 years (and at least 75 flavors) in the making, scooping the CLE a sweet spot on Ohio’s ice cream pantheon.

Serving the Occasional Customer On Oct. 6, 1999, brothers Pete and Mike Mitchell, then 27 and 22 years old, opened their first ice cream shop in Westlake. Perhaps owed to autumn weather, the space remained usually empty between serving “the occasional customer.” The brothers were present from open to close, returning at night to the one-bedroom apartment they shared down the street. “I think some of our customers felt bad for us because they thought ‘ these guys aren’t gonna make it ,’” says Mike.

A Name in Lights “We had our cones and our mouths were open,” says Pete of the February 2001 Plain Dealer coverage that might have pedaled community interest, complete with an article about the young business and a sizable photo of the brothers. “It was a silly picture, but it caught people’s attention.” Yet the Mitchells attest promotion into Clevelanders' lexicon was largely gradual. By 2014, the once boarded-up Rialto Theater was renovated into an ice cream emporium. Inside, a glass wall separating the kitchen is like a page from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ; patrons can watch the kitchen concoct their favorites from a second-floor balcony.

An Art, Science and Philosophy Picking a favorite is impossible for both brothers. Pete lists Peanut Butter Cup, Cookies and Cream, Wild Berry Crumble and Toasted Pistachios among his elites, though admits to lately indulging in Swiss White Chocolate Chunk. “There’s an art to ice cream making, and there’s a science to it,” explains Mike, citing precision in texture, flavor and mouthfeel to reach “that perfect, platonic idea of ice cream that we can all imagine.”

Flavors and Fortitude Each ice cream flavor has its niche of impassioned fans, something their new flavors, Vegan Buckeye (a peanut butter base ribboned with vegan fudge) and Vegan Chocolate Cookie Butter (a creamy blend of “many, many Oreos,” says Pete) have enjoyed since their February release. Despite a new Westlake shop in 2020 and a “handful” of fresh 2022 flavors, Pete and Mike are gracious and mindful, with full intentions to keep their business in Cleveland. “I don’t know where we’ll go in the next 20 years,” Mike says. “But I do know it’s going to be driven by the same values.”

Becky Boban is an assistant editor with Cleveland Magazine whose favorites are Cleveland history and Mitchell’s vegan pistachio.

Mitchell's Ice Cream flagship store in Ohio City opens with a flourish, and a new flavor

  • Updated: Apr. 28, 2014, 10:00 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 28, 2014, 9:00 p.m.
  • Joe Crea, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Talk about a kid in a candy store! If you take your sugary stuff ice cold and creamy, strolling past the freezer windows to make a selection at

shop is agony of the sweetest kind.

Bing Cherry Chocolate Chunk... Geauga Maple Walnut... Key Lime Pie... Tiramisu... Dark Roast Coffee... Lemon Black Raspberry Yogurt... Mint Cookies & Cream... Plus a new seasonal flavor, Rum Babka, offered in honor of last week's Dyngus Day celebration. On and on, they beckon.

Mike Mitchell laughs when a visitor revels in the effect of a trip past his display cases. The temptations are like a Taser, repeatedly stopping you in your tracks.

"What could be better than selling ice cream?" asks Mitchell, 37, his face cracked wide with a smile. He and his brother, Pete, 42, were taking me on a tour their latest store, the new flagship Mitchell Ice Cream shop they opened last week at 1867 West 25th St. in Ohio City.

"I mean, who doesn't love ice cream?" Mike Mitchell said. "Little kids, adults, old people -- almost everyone who comes in here comes in with a smile, and we try to send them away with one."

With enthusiasm as infectious as his, Mitchell could be selling used bike tires and you'd buy in. That we were talking about (and, OK, sampling) ice cream? Well... almost icing on the cake.

He and Pete can't wait to show off a private room, just off the lobby, that's big enough to accommodate up to 18 or 20 guests. Upstairs, a much larger public space can hold upwards of 75 guests. Each can be reserved for birthday parties and other events.

Overnight, the ninth Mitchell's location became its flagship store. Not only does the Ohio City shop fulfill a long-standing desire to be part of Cleveland's renaissance. The new location affords them space for a state of the art, 6,000-plus-square-foot production kitchen.

"We knew we wanted to be in the heart of the city," said Pete, reflecting on what it took to arrive at the sun-washed space that has taken shape in the historic Rialto Theater.

"Once we looked at Ohio City, and at this building specifically, we knew very quickly we wanted to be in this spot," he added.

That occurred about 2-1/2 years ago, when the Mitchells acquired the 1919 building, once a performance space for vaudeville acts. In more recent years it became known as the Moda Building -- initially famous as a haunt for local hipsters and power-brokers, and eventually infamous as a locale for drug deals. In 2006 Moda closed, after its owner plead guilty to charges of laundering drug money.

Which is another reason Mike Mitchell voiced enthusiasm for ice cream shops. The brothers' offer to replace a dubious night spot with a wholesome family-oriented enterprise was the first economic proposal local businesses and members of the neighborhood embraced.

"Please let people know how generous the Mitchells' have been to this community," said Anita Branan, director of the nearby Malichi Center.

A significant portion of the shop's opening day revenues went directly to the center's outreach programs, Branan said. Then op a recent Friday, she and aides accompanied an exuberant squad of school-aged children to the shop, where they were treated to cones and cups.

The shop's lobby stands in a space once occupied by the Rialto's ticket booth and front lobby. Look beyond the wall of glass windows behind the ice cream display and serving area and you'll see the kitchen.

There, under old industrial beams and a 35-high wood slat ceiling, in part of the area once occupied by theater seats, the Mitchell's team will produce all their ice creams, sauces and toppings, baked good such as brownies and batter for its freshly made cones, and other confections. This is their ninth location, following shops in Rocky River, Westlake, Avon, Beachwood, Solon, Strongsville, Bay Village and University Circle.

First, final licenses must be issued. And the region's relentlessly blustery weather must give way to the sunnier skies that will draw ice cream-hungry pedestrians into Mitchell's lobby.

"We're pretty patient," Pete Mitchell says, glancing in the direction of a few mid-afternoon customers enjoying sundaes and chatting happily.

"We're not looking to do many more stores," Pete says. "Mike and I are very happy to be here in Cleveland, and we have no desire to expand outside of here."

Glancing out onto West 25th Street, even on an overcast late April day, there's no dampening his own excitement over what he and his kid brother have created on the fringes of downtown.

"This is not the same neighborhood as it was two years ago, and it's not even the same neighborhood it was last year," he adds.

"There's such great energy here in Ohio City," adds Mike Mitchell. "It was a pretty big step for us, moving here -- but when we see everything going on here, it's hard to imagine not being right in the heart of all this."
