Popular among couples and families alike, this fun-filled barrier island sits off the coast of Sarasota on the Gulf of Mexico. Between its Gulf shores and Atlantic coastlines, the best beaches in Florida have no shortage of powder-fine sand, national and state beach parks , marine biodiversity, and scenes that are both cocktail- and kid-friendly. From the siren song of South Beach and the unexpected surf town of New Smyrna to the natural wonders of Dry Tortugas National Park and Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, here are our picks for the best beaches in Florida—from the Panhandle to the Keys, each with its own distinct personality. Prepare to throw down a towel, soak up the sun in South Florida, and explore the excitement surrounding both land and sea.

Sebastian Beach, Fort Lauderdale

Despite an alarming onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, Florida’s beaches remain magnets for the queer community, none more so than this swathe in Fort Lauderdale where all the colors of the rainbow are represented. True, the utmost alpha-male gay eye candy resides on 12 th Street Beach in Miami; but many prefer Sebastian Beach for its hyper-inclusive vibe best described as the Cheers of gay beaches. All are welcome—and present.

Hunter Springs Park, Crystal River

While coastal beaches are the prime draws of Florida’s vast water world, the Sunshine State also impresses with myriad natural springs, seventy of which feed Crystal River and Kings Bay along the central-west coast. One is Hunter Springs, a rarity among state springs in that it boasts a lovely, small beach. However, truth be told, it’s the stunning water—and the life that thrives therein—that makes this area unique on Earth. Don a mask and snorkel, and head into the mesmerizing blue ombre waters of neighboring Three Sisters Springs, rife with sand volcanoes and underwater vents. Go further in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge to discover a manatee utopia, where the gentle giants bask in the warmth of natural springs, particularly during winter months. This happens to be the only place in the world where outfitters have permits to allow humans to swim (responsibly) alongside manatees.

Alys Beach, South Walton

Among the stunning wide beaches of Florida’s Emerald Coast, none wow more than this sparkling beach flanked by a 158-acre, picture-perfect town of white-washed masonry buildings finished in eclectic architectural styles. The highly manicured town comprises enclaves of stunning homes centered around dreamy courtyards, a main thoroughfare with boutiques and restaurants, and a 20-acre nature preserve. Since there are (intentionally) no hotels in Alys Beach, your access pass to the fine, white sands and calm, cerulean water lies in renting a cottage, villa or home—or befriending someone who lives there.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin

This untouched, 650-acre island feels like a giant sand bar reserved for the lucky few who visit. It dazzles with its pristine environs—vast stretches of radiantly white sands, cerulean waters, beautiful seashells, and prolific bird life. Access the island by ferry from nearby Honeymoon Island State Park or enter on foot via neighboring Clearwater Beach from the south, (A major hurricane in 1985 dredged up enough sand to create a link between Caladesi and Clearwater, but, be warned, it’s a long wade and recommended only for the physically fit.)

South Beach, Miami

Beautiful people, flashy cars, skimpy bathing suits, Art Deco architecture: It's all here on the two-mile white sand stretch that makes up Florida’s most famous beach. Within South Beach’s 22-block span, the busiest—and most touristy—section surfaces between 5th and 14th Streets, parallel to the iconic, neon-trimmed Art Deco backdrop of Ocean Drive as well as Lummus Park, home to 18 volleyball courts and two outdoor fitness gyms. Near the 12th Street lifeguard stations, rainbow flags mark the gay beach where you’ll find a sea of Speedo-clad, sculpted bods. Locals tend to hang south of the touristy hoopla, on the quieter patches below Fifth Street. Hotel beach clubs dominate the shoreline from 15th Street to 22nd Street, but rest assured, there’s still plenty of space for anyone to throw down a towel. To truly take in the pulse of South Beach (inclusive of vibe, high design and an upscale Miami “scene,”), consider staying at either the soothing, nature-inspired 1 Hotel South Beach or the art-forward, all-suite W South Beach .

Clearwater Beach

This Gulf Coast beach is a magnet for tykes and tots (and their parents), thanks to its clear, shallow waters, pillow-soft sands, playground, and Beach Walk Promenade, ideal for bike rides and rollerblading. When sun fatigue strikes, consider a respite inland at Clearwater Marine Aquarium to ogle the spectacular dolphin complex, home to multiple rescue dolphins, plus sea turtles, river otters, stingrays, and nurse sharks. Stay for the nightly, festival-style sunset celebration at Pier 60, where street performers delight as the sun sets.

Marco Island Beach

The western perimeter of Marco Island is marked by stunning, wide white-sand beaches idyllic for ambles and shelling. At low tide, wade out to sandbars to collect sand dollars and other sea treasures. Toward the north of this barrier island, Tigertail Beach Park is popular for its tidal lagoon, where paddleboarders can take advantage of the ultra-calm waters. Further south, the beaches are busy with families vacationing at beachfront properties like Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort and Spa and JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort (which also has an adults-only resort within a resort, Paradise by Sirene, for those who want to leave the kids behind.) Along the beach look forward to seabird activity aplenty, as Marco Island is a preferred nesting ground for least terns and black skimmers.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Forget what you think you know about Fort Lauderdale: The Pabst Blue Ribbon-strewn sands, Hawaiian Tropic oil slicks, and packed motels of yesteryear’s spring break capital have gone away (though the ultimate dive bar, the c. 1938 Elbo Room, is here to stay, much to our delight!) Nowadays, for the most part Fort Lauderdale beach is characterized by uncluttered stretches of sand, sparkling blue waters, upscale resorts, and mega-yachts rewriting this beach’s story. Billions in economic development have gone into erasing the Where the Boys Are vibe, restructuring Fort Lauderdale Beach as an unfussy yet refined alternative to neighboring Miami’s beaches. Case in point: Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Fort Lauderdale , a 189-key high design oceanfront stunner that opened in March 2022 and that ticks all the boxes one would covet in a snazzy Four Seasons stay—from excellent service to a sublime spa to an adults-only pool.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne

We wouldn't blame you if you took one look at this mile-long, undeveloped beach on the southern tip of Key Biscayne and thought, “I'm just going to nap.” But there’s also an extensive network of trails with superb Miami skyline views worth exploring. No wonder it regularly receives accolades as one of the top beaches in the country. Consider renting a bike from the park's concession and exploring in depth. Peek inside the circa-1845 Cape Florida Lighthouse (South Florida’s oldest) and look to the horizon for a glimpse of Stiltsville, a collection of historic homes that appear to float atop Biscayne Bay. Consider combining a trip to Bill Baggs with a stay at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami , a luxe yet unpretentious island retreat nearby with its own 1,200-foot-long golden sand beach.

Bowman’s Beach, Sanibel Island

Easily accessible off the main Sanibel-Captiva Road yet remarkably undeveloped, this family-friendly beach lacks the crowds of neighboring stretches but promises all the pastel-hued sunsets, excellent shelling, and gentle waves for which Sanibel Island is known. It’s also one of the best beaches in Florida for windsurfing, sailing, and even canoeing, thanks to inland waterways to the west of the beach. However, our favorite pastime here is a barefoot walk through the white sand, admiring the Gulf views and picking up more shells than we can carry along the way.

Fort De Soto Park, Tierra Verde

With a whopping 1,136 acres spread across five islands , this beach park impresses with its powdery white sands, nature trails, and patchwork of mangroves, ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. It’s not uncommon to see bottlenose dolphins skirting the shoreline and manatees bobbing up and down in the water. Families should head to the sprawling natural tidal pool on the park’s North Beach, an excellent spot for kids to collect seashells and splash around.

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Hobe Sound, Jupiter Island

Natural splendor takes center stage at this Nature Conservancy preserve on Jupiter Island. The beach is anchored by an ethereal 100,000-year-old Anastasia limestone shelf—the largest on the Atlantic coast—and the greater, untouched surrounds are considered a major success story in native coastal habitat restoration. Don’t expect to sunbathe and chill here; do expect to stroll the mile-long beach, marvel at a glimpse of natural Old Florida, view sea turtle tracks in the sands, and perhaps catch a shot of water plumes through the rocks, which are known to reach as high as 50 feet.

Haulover Naturist Beach, Miami

In the northern reaches of Miami Beach lies this welcoming, clothing-optional beach surrounded by undeveloped parklands. In fact, it is Florida’s oldest officially recognized public nude beach. All ages, shapes, sizes, and sexes are present, and there are several unofficial sections: one for families, another for non-families, and even a gay nude beach. Come prepared to bare it all among hard-core nudists and tan-line avoiders.

Bahia Honda, Florida Keys

Sitting at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico is a 524-acre beach park with some of the finest stretches of sand in the Florida Keys . At mile marker 37 of US-1/Overseas Highway, Bahia Honda is an essential stopping point on any road trip between Miami and Key West . There are both secluded and more trafficked spots for sunbathing and excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling. On the beach, be sure to look up: The largest intact section of Henry Flagler’s elevated overseas railroad is an eye-catcher.

Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge

About mid-state along Florida’s east coast, Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge is 20.5 miles of beach and shoreline habitat, situated between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach and designated for sea turtle conservation. It happens to be the world’s most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting and North America’s most significant area for green turtle nesting. Secure your spot far in advance to participate in naturalist-led nighttime turtle walks during nesting season (June-July annually) with Friends of the Carr Refuge . During this time, you’ll witness the spectacle of a nesting sea turtle laying her eggs, covering her nest, and returning to the ocean. Once the hatchlings start emerging from the nests in August and September, embark on a guided daytime dig turtle watch to view hatched sea turtle nests.

Henderson Beach State Park, Destin

A series of 30-foot white sand dunes underscore the natural beauty of this Panhandle beach. It’s one of the most picturesque stretches of the Gulf Islands National Seashore , an exquisite mosaic of barrier islands stretching 160 miles across the Gulf of Mexico, from Mississippi to the Florida Panhandle. Note that this beach park isn’t just popular with humans—it’s also a favorite nesting ground for green and loggerhead sea turtles, a known hot spot for dolphins, and a feeding ground for brown pelicans and black skimmers.

Siesta Beach, Sarasota

This incredibly wide beach along the Gulf of Mexico has what it calls the world’s finest, whitest sand (it’s more than 99 percent pure quartz, which keeps it cool even under blazing temps), and there’s plenty of it to go around. It’s the highlight of the 8-mile-long Siesta Key Island and popular with sand sculpture artists, hippies, and families basking in the sun. Cross the bridge from Siesta Key and arrive in Sarasota, one of Florida’s hottest emerging cities on its west coast.

Jupiter Dog Beach, Palm Beach

Expect paw prints of every shape and size along this off-leash beach in northern Palm Beach County. At two and a half miles long (from Beach Marker #26/Marcinski Road to Beach Marker #57 at the Carlin Park property line), it is the largest dog-friendly beach on the East Coast. On any given day, it’s simply a feeling of overwhelming joy as zoomies, splashes, and belly rubs abound. Doggie bags are provided at multiple sites on the beach, and four-legged beachgoers are expected to abide by the beach’s social code of conduct: behaved, obedient, and well-socialized.

Garden Key, Dry Tortugas National Park

Reached exclusively by seaplane (with Key West Seaplane Adventures ) or ferry (on the Yankee Freedom III ), the main island of North America’s most inaccessible national park houses Fort Jefferson, a circa-1846 coastal fortress, and some mind-blowing marine life off its coast. Snorkel among seahorses, sea turtles, and rainbow-hued tropical fish, or head toward the west moat wall in search of moray eels and nurse sharks. There’s limited shade and facilities, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen .

New Smyrna Beach

When one thinks of surfing in America, towns along the California and Hawaii coastlines quickly come to mind. But Florida has a surf scene, too. Case in point: this East Coast surfers’ paradise, which promises prolific breaks, thanks to some massive rock ledges four to five miles offshore. Hang ten or simply immerse yourself in the surf culture of this small stretch of Florida, which often receives accolades as one of the top surf towns in the U.S.

Mid-Beach, Miami

A raised boardwalk separates the beach from hotel-lined Collins Avenue between 23rd Street and 46th Street, an area collectively referred to as Mid-Beach. Home to some of Miami’s most stylish hotels—including The Miami Beach Edition , an Ian Schrager–backed reinvention of the 1955 Seville Hotel and the epicenter of Miami’s daytime social scene, Soho Beach House —this area caters to Miami’s style set and well-heeled travelers that consider South Beach passé. Nudists, this one is for you. There’s a reason Haulover Nude Beach is consistently listed as one of the best clothing-optional beaches in the world. Although the clothing-optional area is only a tiny part of the 177-acre urban park, its 0.4-mile stretch invites visitors from all over to be themselves in the purest form, and the weather makes it a place you can visit year-round. But, of course, you can still participate without taking your bathing suit off, and the waters are ideal for swimming and surfing.

Pro Tip: Don’t get naked on the wrong side! The nude beach is situated between the Intercoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. (There will, of course, be more apparent indicators that you arrived.)

Crandon Park

Let’s face it: Most people appreciate the fun and magic of beaches, but every beach is not for everybody, especially if you have children. (Think touristy party scenes or nudity.) So if family is the game, Crandon Park is definitely somewhere you want to play. It is located 10 minutes from downtown Miami. Its 808 acres offer plenty of room for visitors to spread out, and the park offers picnic areas, cabanas for rent, barbecue, volleyball courts, and a small nature center. But what parents will genuinely appreciate about Crandon Park is that there is a nearby restroom to almost any beach spot you decide to claim. Gone are the days of secretly convincing your kids to pee in water!

Smathers Beach

Key West isn’t known for beaches, especially considering most don’t even have sand. Siesta Key Beach

Once you step foot on the quartz-crystal powdery sand while the bountiful sun kisses your skin, you will quickly understand Siesta Key’s magic. During sunsets, few views can compete with the contrast of warm colors against some of the whitest, finest sand you will ever see.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

What makes Fort Lauderdale Beach phenomenal is its accessibility. Goodbye traffic, hello, more time getting your tan on. The surrounding area is being revamped for a new era of hospitality, as evidenced by six new hotels that opened in 2020, 10 new hotels in 2021, and another seven anticipated openings throughout 2022.

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is best known for its 1,080-foot Pier 60, making it an extraordinary place to watch the sunset, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Blowing Rocks Preserve embodies the bridge between preserving native coastal habitation and modern innovation. Shallow, warm water extends out into the Gulf of Mexico and is ideal for splashing about or for having an impromptu game of water football. Daytona Beach is a wide stretch of sand with some areas so hard-packed that driving is permitted along the top of the beach. The town itself has long had a reputation associated with spring break, but that has passed, and it now draws a more sedate group of visitors.

Bahia Honda State Park is located at mile marker 37 in the Florida Keys, near Marathon. This park offers one of Florida's most spectacular beaches and, since it is in a state park, it is left in a natural state. The park has three beach areas, Sandspur, Loggerhead, and Calusa, each facing opposite directions, so there is almost always one beach that is not affected by waves and wind.

The most beautiful section is on the outer shore, where Sandspur Beach seems to stretch on endlessly, with plenty of area for walking. Unfortunately, this section of beach was badly damaged by hurricane Irma in 2017 and is closed. The park service has not set a firm reopening date, but restoration efforts continue. Loggerhead and Calusa beaches are both open.

The water in many areas is shallow for a great distance. The beach is best visited during times of lower tide. The smaller beach on the inside offers great views of the old railroad bridge.

Alternative: Hobe Sound Beach

Another quiet retreat, the unsigned Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge , hides at the north end of Jupiter Island, just past Hobe Sound Beach (often packed with loud kids and teenagers). Escape the racket and treat your feet to a gorgeous two-mile beach stroll along its deserted sandy shores.

Detour: Many celebrities nest in Jupiter Island; it’s always fun strolling or biking down Beach Road checking out eye-catching mansions – many un-gated and easy-to-see. Tiger Woods lives here – so have Celine Dion, Alan Jackson and Burt Reynolds.

Melbourne Beach

Best beach for watching sea turtles.

Take a romantic stroll along Melbourne Beach during nesting season (May to October), as moonlit skies cast spotlights upon determined sea turtles crawling ever-so-slowly to lay eggs at the top of this wide beach (50-60 days later, hatchlings struggle back to the sandy shoreline).

Local tip: Ditch the flashlights and maintain comfortable space to avoid disturbing the turtles.

Treasure Shores Park

Best beach for treasure hunting.

The Treasure Coast earned its name for a reason. Valuables continue to wash ashore from countless nearby shipwrecks. Any beach along Hutchinson Island is ripe for harvesting tidal gifts, but my favorite is Treasure Shores Park near Sebastian. Just offshore is the resting place of a treasure-laden Spanish galleon that sank during a hurricane in 1715.

Detour: Visit nearby McLarty Treasure Museum to view many impressive artifacts recovered from the ocean’s depths. Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum in Sebastian boasts a bounty of treasures collected by this family of professional shipwreck salvagers. Rent metal detectors from their gift shop (which also sells actual treasures!) and sift for your own riches.

Sanibel Island

Best shelling beach.

Known as “the shelling capital of the world”, beaches of Sanibel Island (including Bowman’s Beach and Blind Pass Beach) offer a treasure trove of almost 400 species of shells. Do the “Sanibel Stoop,” prospecting for lightning whelks, prickly cockles, and jingle shells.

Haulover Beach

Best clothing-optional beaches.

Ready to let warm ocean breezes caress your skin – and shed those unsightly tan lines? While most naturist beaches are intentionally secluded, Haulover Beach , between Fort Lauderdale and Miami , has no shame. It’s like a mainstream beach… just without clothes. No matter your age or shape, you’ll feel comfortable strutting your stuff at this judgment-free, family-friendly beach (its patrolling ambassadors ensure that fun remains “clean”).

Alternative: Playalinda Beach

If you prefer a bit more discretion, the remote white sand beaches of Playalinda Beach , inside Canaveral National Seashore are more reserved. Although nudity is forbidden in Brevard County, the secluded stretch north of parking lot #13 is a de facto nude beach, sanctioned by official signs.

Local tip: Pack whatever you’ll need – including lots of water and sunblock; amenities consist of portable toilets in the parking lots. Passes to Playalinda cost $20/week, $40 seasonally; parking at Haulover Beach is $5 on weekdays, $7 on weekends and holidays.

Lake Worth Beach

Best family beach.

Once a popular gathering spot for free-spirited hippies, Lake Worth Beach continues to strut to a Bohemian beat. But these days, its gorgeous white sand beach is light on partying and heavy on family vibes, man. Surrounded by shops, restaurants and ice cream huts, kids won’t go hungry here – and there are plenty of washrooms and showers, too. From fishing from its spectacular pier to building fortresses in the sand or hitting the waves with a boogie board, it’s endless family fun.

Frederick Douglass Park

Best beach for riding horseback.

Whether you’re a diehard romantic or want to role-play thundering scenes from Game of Thrones , almost everyone has envisioned themselves riding horseback through crashing waves, the sea breeze blowing wildly through your hair. Well, saddle up and head to Frederick Douglass Park in Fort Pierce, the only beach in south Florida where hooves can hit the sand. Guided 1.5-mile trail rides take riders (including beginners) along stunning, secluded shores, where an abundance of sea life graces the sands.

Hollywood Beach

Best party beach.

Since South Beach gets all the attention, I’ll nominate Hollywood Beach as Florida's beach party central. Stroll or bike its beachfront Broadwalk , and it won’t take long to feel the burning party vibe. Lined with tiki bars, al fresco restaurants, t-shirt shops and ice-cream parlors, skateboarders whiz between pedestrians, as buskers juggle, sing and dance. Quiet in the morning, surfers invade by afternoon, and energy peaks after dusk when evening concerts rock the Bandshell, an outdoor music venue. This is quintessential Florida beach life.

Jupiter Dog Beach

Best dog beach.

Dog lovers are in great company at Jupiter Dog Beach , where owners are as friendly as their pets. Dogs run leash-free along two-and-a-half miles of shell-covered sand, aqua-blue waters lapping their paws. The area’s super clean, with free parking, free poop bags, plenty of trash bins and washing stations.

From the iconic Art Deco architecture and pulsating nightlife of Miami Beach to the more tranquil Siesta Key for those who just want to relax. Whether you’re seeking a serene getaway, a family-friendly shore, or a vibrant party scene, Florida’s diverse beaches cater to every whim and fancy.

We wanted to help you make the best choice for your next vacation so we came up with our favorite beaches in Florida so we can help make your travels just a little bit easier.

1. South Beach Miami

You might know it for its 1930s art deco vibes, or hot nightlife, but South Beach in Miami also offers powdery white beaches and lots of activities to boot. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, South Beach has two distinct areas that attract different crowds.

Lummus Park and Beach allows topless sunbathing and is a hub of activity with street foods, cyclists, skaters, and more. If you’re looking for a more chill vibe, then the area of First Street Beach at South Point might just be your thing. It is an area popular with surfers in South Beach as well as fishing enthusiasts and families.

Besides surf and sun, you can go shopping at the popular Lincoln Road Mall. To understand the real heartbeat of South Beach, you can take a guided art deco tour, enjoy all sorts of cuisine, Cuban in particular , and dance the night away at any number of clubs.

2. Panama City Beach

This is one of the best Florida beaches for the Spring Break crowd as well as for families. With 27 miles of clean, pristine coastline on the Gulf of Mexico, Panama City Beach was voted one of the top 3 beaches in the United States by TripAdvisor. There are a ton of activities you can get into at this beach with beach volleyball, snorkeling, and surfing.

Once you are tired of catching some rays and have had your fill of sand and surf, visit nearby attractions like Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. One of the most fun day trips you can do is head to Shell Island where you get a chance to see bottlenose dolphins up close.

Panama City Beach has a lot of holiday vacation rentals available in the high-rise condos along the beach. This can be an economical alternative to staying in a hotel when traveling in a group. The famous George Island State Park is located a 2-hour drive from here.

3. Miami North Beach

It may be more known for glitz and glam and The Real Housewives of Miami, but Miami Beach has more than 12 spectacular beaches to experience . Miami Beach is Florida’s most exciting and cosmopolitan city with art deco buildings, restaurants, nightclubs, and very tanned, attractive people. However, there are distinct areas and sandy stretches within it.

The closest thing to the official Miami Beach would be North Miami Beach. The beach is central and you’ll find locals and tourists alike sunbathing all day long. Since all of it’s quite central, there are a ton of eateries nearby. The beach is also home to the North Beach Bandshell which provides great musical entertainment throughout the year. Getting on the water is the best way to experience the Sunshine State. Take this City Cruise to see the Millionaires mansions of Miami and cruise to the Venetian Islands and South Beach.

4. Clearwater Beach

If you’re looking for one of the best Florida beaches with a real community feel, Clearwater Beach is where it’s at. You will find the public beach staffed with a lifeguard all year long. Art festivals take place throughout the year like the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival. This sand sculpture festival takes place in April attracting artists to create sand sculpture masterpieces.

One of the most pristine beaches, Clearwater is known for its smooth white sands as well as spectacular sunsets. In fact, the sunsets are so spectacular that there is a nightly festival to celebrate them with street musicians and activities for kids. 

Additionally, there’s lots of fun stuff to do near the beach like taking a visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium or Aspirations Winery. You can even take a boat tour to get familiar with more of Clearwater’s coastline.

5. Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach may be an obvious choice, but it is one of our favorite beaches in Florida. We used to come here with my family when I was younger to vacation for the winter.

This mammoth beach on the Atlantic Coast is 23 miles long with resorts lining the waterfront. The Halifax River – a lagoon separated from the Atlantic by barrier beaches separates the beach from the city. Daytona is an interesting beach that you can drive on. The Daytona Beach Pier also has attractions and rides and the Daytona Speedway is not too far away.

This can get very busy, especially by the pier, but we recommend staying at Daytona Beach Shores for a romantic escape on Daytona Beach. Ormond Beach is located just north of Daytona Beach and is a quieter option. Read more at: Best Things to do in Daytona Beach .

6. Fort Lauderdale

There is never a dull moment in Fort Lauderdale , with thousands of yachts and cruise ships visiting its coastlines each year. Fort Lauderdale Beach is one of the city’s premier beaches located at the heart of Fort Lauderdale.

Grab an umbrella and beach chair and just soak in the fact that you’re gazing out over the Atlantic Ocean. Or you can get out and get involved in any one of the dozens of activities happening simultaneously on one of Florida’s most beautiful beaches. You can try out parasailing, scuba diving, jet skiing and even rent a boat and take it for a sail.

Although a few decades back, Fort Lauderdale Beach was known for its college party atmosphere, these days it welcomes all kinds of visitors. You’ll find high-end restaurants and live music bars as well as museums, spas, and fun activities for kids like Bluefoot Pirate Adventures.

7. Santa Rosa Beach

This is one of the best Florida beaches when you’re looking for a mix of things to do with a group. Santa Rosa Beach attracts families to its lengthy coastline running from the Gulf of Mexico to Choctawhatchee Bay. Stretching 26 miles along the northwest coast, Santa Rosa Beach sits in the protected area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

It’s a great alternative to avoid the crowds of Panama City Beach. Beaches near Santa Rosa Beach are Grayton Beach State Park and Blue Mountain Beach.

You’ll find people doing everything from paddleboarding to fishing or simply basking in the sun on beach chairs. Off the beach, there are also a ton of things to do like visiting the local craft breweries or the historic Wesley Mansion which dates back to the late 19th century. You should note that Santa Rosa Beach has experienced a real increase in popularity so you’ll want to get to the beach early in the morning to score a prime spot. 

8. Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is located just south of Cape Canaveral on the Space Coast. It is one of the best places to learn to surf in Florida thanks to its calm waters. But it is also great for pros too.

This area is known as the East Coast surf capital of the United States.  Cocoa Beach is also home to the largest surf shop in the world, Ron Jean Surf Shop is a massive 52,000 square feet. You can find everything from bathing suits to top-of-the-line surfboards in the shop and it’s open 24/7.

Another thing you might want to check out on the east coast is the Barrier Island Sanctuary which is dedicated to the protection of sea turtles. It’s a half-hour drive from the beach and you can go on a guided walk through the sanctuary and learn all about the conservation of sea turtles . This east coast beach is less than an hour’s drive from Orlando and sits on Florida’s East Coast.

9. Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach sits on Santa Rosa Island and you’ll find that Pensacola Beach is where more of the action takes place while Santa Rosa Beaches are quieter.  The waters surrounding this barrier reef beach are crystal clear and the sands are soft and white.

You’ll find that there are lifeguards on the main beach areas but if you head into more of the quiet areas, you’ll get a beautiful beach, but no lifeguards. You can take dolphin-watching tours from the beach or head out to the pier to go fishing.

There’s an outdoor adventure park available for those looking for something sportier. One of the most fun things to do at Pensacola Beach is to go canoeing at night in glow-in-the-dark boats.

10. Key West

No list of Florida’s best beaches would be complete without mentioning the laid-back charm of Key West. At the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys, Key West is a blend of beautiful beaches, historic sites, and a lively street life. The beaches here are perfect for snorkeling, with clear waters and vibrant marine life.

11. Sunny Isles Beach

If you prefer being underwater rather than floating on top, then you’re going to want to check out Sunny Isles Beach in Miami Beach. It is famous for its world-class diving and snorkeling. The famous Newport Beach Fishing Pier sits on Sunny Isles Beach too.

And it’s not just for show, you can actually bring your fishing gear and fish here too. Nearby there are lots of cafes to get some high-end lunch. And speaking of high-end the Sunny Isles is known for luxury resorts and luxury living so food and accommodations are on the pricier side. 

12. Naples Beach

Located along the Gulf of Mexico, Naples Beach is renowned for its miles of soft, white sandy shores, which offer a sense of tranquility and an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The calm and clear waters here are ideal for swimming, making it a great spot for families and individuals looking for a refreshing dip in the sea.

Naples Beach is famous for its 1000-foot-long pier that juts out from its white sand. Named after Naples in Italy, this beach town keeps the Italian tradition alive with a great food scene. The city boasts a charming downtown area, where you can stroll along Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South, exploring upscale boutiques, art galleries, and a variety of dining options.

The area is also close to several nature reserves and parks, such as the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Everglades National Park, where you can experience Florida’s unique wildlife and landscapes through guided tours and hikes.

13. Tigertail Beach Park

From Naples make your way to Marco Island to visit the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands known as the Barrier Islands. You can drive directly from Naples to Marco Island taking the bridges across McIlan Bay and East Marco Bay. Many beaches are private on this island, but luckily there are two beautiful public beaches. One of which is Tigertail Beach.

Tigertail Beach Park offers paddleboard and jet ski rentals plus watersports rentals. You can explore its tidal pools on guided tours or self-guided tours, and there is a bird-watching tower where you can keep an eye out for migrating birds and see overhead views of the beach and lagoon. It was once only a sandbar off the coast of Florida but with shifting weather patterns, it is now connected to the mainland.

14. Oleta River State Park

Oleta River State Park is for people who like secluded beaches and rugged scenery. It has a 1200-foot beach but most people come to this area for the activities they can do in the water and in the forests. The park has a ton of biking trails and hiking trails throughout.

You can also rent gear to go kayaking and canoeing on the Oleta River which sits in this Florida state park. The fun part about this beach area is that you can sleep over in one of their cabins. There is a youth camping area too, but you’ll have to check with the park for rules and regulations on who can stay there.

15. Grayton Beach State Park

For a mix of nature trails and sand dunes, you’ll want to visit Grayton Beach in Grayton Beach State Park. This Gulf Coast beach draws a completely different crowd than Miami Beach or the Florida Keys beaches. The top beaches on Florida’s southern tip attract flash luxury and paparazzi, but in this state park, you live life on the quieter side with more secluded adventures.

The aquamarine water of Western Lake is the perfect place to swim and do some deep sea fishing as well as get in some paddleboarding. There are almost 100 acres of snowy sand dunes along the coast. The state park beach has restrooms and outdoor showers but you should pack your food and drinks with you before heading here.

16. Siesta Key

Have you ever sat in million-year-old sand? If you visit Siesta Beach you can. It is believed that the sand that’s found on the barrier island of Siesta Key has arrived there over millions of years from the rivers of the Appalachian mountains flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.

This sand is almost pure quartz crystals and it is so fine that when you walk on it, it seems to make a bit of a squeaking sound. These sugar-white sands have often been called some of the best sands in the world, making this beach in Siesta Key one of the country’s world-class beaches.

Besides basking in fine white quartz sand, you can enjoy some swimming and snorkeling at Siesta Beach. Nearby is Siesta Key Village which is full of lovely cafes as well as pubs and boutiques for shopping too. You can also rent a bike and take a leisurely sunset cruise through the small beach town.

17. Harry Harris Beach

This is the perfect beach to take your children to in the Florida Keys. Harry Harris Beach sits in Harry Harris Park on the largest key among the Florida Keys located in Key Largo . The beach area has a breakwater so the ocean is essentially turned into a pool that’s no higher than 5′ for your kids to swim around in. Key Largo is also one of the best places in Florida to go scuba diving.

If you venture out past the breakwater you can do some snorkeling, scuba diving boating, and fishing too. The beach grounds have a kid’s playground, picnic areas with BBQs as well as clean restroom facilities. You should also pack a picnic as there aren’t really any places close by to get a snack.

18. Dry Tortugas

Key West has some of the best beaches in Florida but the most pristine and secluded is the beach at Dry Tortugas National Park. Located 70 miles off the coast of Key West, Dry Tortugas is a great day trip by ferry or seaplane. 19. Sanibel Island

We are happy to report that Sanibel Island is open after the devastating Hurricane Ian in September 2022. They have made an incredible recovery with almost all of the major attractions re-opening. At the time of this writing, the only major things not open are the Lighthouse Fishing Pier and Lighthouse Tower area, but Lighthouse Beach is open.

Don’t miss Bowman’s Beach which is one of the best beaches in Florida, but it is also often voted as one of the best beaches in the United States . Sanibel Island is located just off the coast of Fort Myers and sits in the Gulf of Mexico. The area is known for high-end resorts and seafood restaurants as well as historic architecture.

It’s a sheller’s paradise and one of the most family-friendly areas in the state. The Sanibel Stoop is a term coined for all the people you’re going to see hunched over searching for unique shells on Sanibel beaches. According to area shellers, you’re going to find the most different variety of shells in the morning at low tide.

The Cocoa Beach Pier is a great spot if you’re looking for some excitement. Visitors can dine at any one of the delicious restaurants , have a drink during happy hour, or shop at a quaint boutique while live music fills the air.

The pier also provides great fishing spots and a killer view of the Atlantic Ocean. Beach, water sport, and fishing equipment rentals are available, not to mention the beach volleyball court for a great game.

Though there are countless wind and water sports to participate in like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or parasailing, one of the top things to do in Cocoa Beach is surf .

For a taste of Cocoa Beach’s surf culture, head to the beach early in the morning to watch locals and pros alike catch some waves or check out some of the local shops that create custom, handcrafted surfboards and stand-up paddleboards. The iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop, which is the largest surf shop in the world, is a can’t-miss either, not to mention it’s open 24 hours.

There are four main parks with access to one of the best beaches in Florida:

• Alan Shepard Park – Named after famed NASA astronaut, the park offers a great view of the shuttle launches – it’s quite a sight to behold. Though these are some of the nicest beaches in Florida for different reasons, Honeymoon Island also has about three miles of hiking trails through one of the last remaining slash pine forests which are brimming with wildlife.

The incredible variety of birds, such as osprey and eagles, also attracts birdwatchers to Honeymoon Island. Visitors can check out the Nature Center if they’d like to learn more about the wildlife in the area as well as the flora.

The history of the island is also a fun little bonus. The story goes that in the 1940s, Clinton M. Washburn, in an effort to rebrand the island since it was previously named Hog Island, announced that newlyweds could apply for a free vacation to Honeymoon Island.

Couples would stay in cottages with names like “Love Nest,” though there was no electricity or plumbing, and enjoyed activities such as swimming, fishing, and exploring the island.

Visitors these days can look at old photos of the honeymooners at the Nature Center and learn a little bit more about this unusual history. For instance, what is now Honeymoon Island used to be much bigger until a hurricane split it in two about 100 years ago – Caladesi State Park, another one of the best Florida beaches, makes up the other half.

Caladesi Island State Park

Surprisingly, this beautiful barrier island paradise has remained largely undeveloped, making it one of the best beaches in Florida for those who prefer a quiet, peaceful beach trip. This Florida beach destination is not far from Clearwater.

Visitors to Caladesi Island State Park can bring their fishing gear and hope for a good catch (as long as state fishing regulations are adhered to) or pack a picnic to enjoy at any of the pavilions while the kids have fun at the playground. The tranquil hiking trails and paths along the dunes can be so relaxing as well.

For a unique experience, paddle a kayak through the mangroves on the island or try camping on a boat! The marina is equipped with electrical service and water hookups as well as a grill for a completely different camping experience.

If you’re up for a bit of a walk, Caladesi Island State Park is also accessible by foot from Clearwater Beach since Dunedin Pass was filled in by Hurricane Elena in 1985, though many would consider six miles quite a far walk.

The most convenient way to get to Caladesi Island is via boat; if you’re in luck, you might even see some dolphins making a splash!

The Caladesi Ferry is available to take visitors to one of the top beaches in Florida while others arrive on private boats, but Florida locals insist that the best way to visit the island is by kayak and will even rent them out at a more affordable rate than a rental company.

Clearwater Beach

The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, either. In fact, Clearwater Beach is one of the coolest beaches in Florida because of its spectacular sunsets. Pier 60 actually hosts a nightly sunset celebration featuring live music, buskers, and local artisans.

Throughout the month, the Sunset Cinema screens great movies the whole family can enjoy as well. How perfect would it be to watch Pirates of the Caribbean on the beach?!

Besides the amazing things going on every day, Clearwater Beach hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year like the Clearwater Offshore Nationals for boating enthusiasts, the John’s Pass Seafood Festival for the foodies, and the Sugar Sand Festival that showcases incredible sand sculptures!

Ultimately, this is one of the best beaches in Florida because of…well…the actual beach! The waters are so calm, which makes it ideal for a relaxing day, and the city does a great job of maintaining the cleanliness of the beach, raking the superfine sand daily in the early morning. It’s also one of the only beaches nearby with lifeguards on duty all year long.

Beer Can Island (Longboat Key)

For those who want to get away from it all, or at least feel like they are, Beer Can Island is one of the best beaches in Florida to escape to. Though the name does not conjure images of beauty, this is actually a photogenic spot perfect for a photo shoot .

The soft white sand, turquoise waters, driftwood, and fallen trees of this hidden gem in Florida almost make it feel as if it was deserted.

It’s the perfect oasis if you’re looking for a quiet, private day at the beach to walk along the shore or hang a hammock between the trees and enjoy the breeze, though you should be wary of the rip currents.

Before you visit, keep in mind that there are no amenities or facilities, so plan accordingly. This secluded Florida beach is accessible by boat or by foot along either Broadway Street or North Shore Road at the north end of Longboat Key near Sarasota .

As its name suggests, Siesta Key is one of the top Florida beaches to come and relax. The powdery white sand, tranquil ocean waves, and soft, salty breeze are huge draws.

Many vacation rentals and hotels in Siesta Key are right on the sand with really convenient beach access. Visitors can charter a boat, rent vehicles and equipment for water sports, or book a fun excursion like parasailing or snorkeling .

There’s free yoga on the beach in the mornings and an exhilarating Siesta Key Drum Circle on Sunday evenings that can make anyone feel the beat and move with it.

Venice Beach

Just south of Sarasota lies fourteen miles of one of the best Florida beach vacation spots – Venice Beach .

Like many top Florida beaches along the Gulf Coast , Venice Beach has soft, pristine sand to dig your feet into and settle down for a fantastic day of sunbathing or kick around during an awesome game of beach volleyball at one of the two courts available.

Visitors can bring their own grub and set up in the picnic area. Alternatively, there’s a concession stand as well as numerous cafes and restaurants along the shore. Lifeguards are on duty year-round, so there’s no worry about safety, and there are restrooms and outdoor showers available for guests to wash away the sand and salt of the day. Even better, the parking is free!

The beautiful, warm Gulf waters make Venice Beach one of the Florida beaches ideal for swimming and boating. Beachcombing is one of the locals’ favorite pastimes as the beach is brimming with treasures like fossilized shark teeth and lovely shells.

During turtle nesting season (May – October), lucky beachgoers may even spot turtle nests or turtles hatching and making their way back to the ocean! It’s important to be mindful of these events so as not to disturb these amazing marine creatures.

The Venice Public Fishing Pier is a great place not only to fish but also spot dolphins and shorebirds, not to mention it’s right by the only dog-friendly beach in Venice, Brohard Park.

Visitors can also walk or bike along the paths through the Venetian Waterway Park, where they may even spot alligators in the water. At the end of the trail, guests are rewarded with the ruggedly beautiful Caspersen Beach. Though it’s not as immaculate and manicured as the main Venice Beach, the soft sand is complemented by dramatic rock formations that make this spot something special.

The wide expanse of a gradually sloping shoreline with the softest sand is one reason that Fort Myers Beach is one of the nicest beaches in Florida. This vacation paradise is dotted with both luxury resorts and quaint condos as well as the pier, fresh seafood restaurants , tiki bars, the Times Square shopping district, and much more.

Relaxing at the beach could mean setting up a lounge chair and laying under the sun or calmly canoeing through the mangrove forests, spotting dolphins or gentle manatees in the ocean.

Bahia Honda Key

The palm-lined beach of Bahia Honda State Park is the perfect view on a lovely, bright day in the Florida sunshine. It’s considered one of the top Florida beaches these days, but originally gained popularity when it became a stop along the railroad that Henry Flagler built all the way down to Key West .

Travelers would hop off the train to enjoy the balmy, salty ocean breeze and admire the spectacular view of the ocean. Unfortunately, the railroad track was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935 and the Overseas Highway was built over it, though the use of that bridge ceased in 1972.

Visitors can choose from any of the three beaches located at Bahia Honda State Park . On the west end of the island is Calusa, the smallest beach. Sandspur is the largest beach in the state park and is located along the southeast side of the island. The shallow water at Loggerhead Beach on the south side makes it ideal for families with young children.

Bahia Honda State Park lends itself to snorkeling or scuba diving for beginners because of its shallow waters that are bursting with tropical fish, coral, and other marine life. Kayak rentals are available as well or visitors can try geocaching, a real-life treasure hunting game.

As if the crystal-clear water wasn’t enough to entice visitors, Bahia Honda State Park is home to some rare flora and fauna that can be found along the three nature trails, one of which leads up to the bridge for a fantastic bird’s eye view of the island. Smathers Beach

Key West is known for many things, but generally not sandy beaches because the shores are usually rocky. Smathers Beach , though, had sand imported to make it one of the best beaches in the Florida Keys.

Smathers Beach is the largest in the city and offers visitors so many activities and amenities. Along with the beach volleyball courts, vendors line the beach to rent jet skis or snorkeling equipment. People can also book a windsurfing or parasailing adventure for a bit of a thrill.

During the busy season especially, there are plenty of food trucks where people can grab a delicious bite from a local business. This clean beach with plenty of shade and countless activities also make it a popular Spring Break destination in Florida.

There are restrooms and shower facilities available. Hotels , bed and breakfasts, and other rental properties are generally in keeping with the overall laid-back vibe of Key West with the added bonus of being right by one of the best beaches in South Florida.

Sand Key Beach is found just off the coast of Clearwater and is one of the best vacation beaches in Florida. This is a hidden gem beach, and you will feel like a local as you chill here and avoid the crowds of other beaches in the area.

This gorgeous west coast beach features amazing white sand, shells to uncover, and breathtaking sunset views. This is a great place to bring your significant other to enjoy peace and seclusion. While the beach is not free, it is worth the $5 parking fee.

The beach here is not super big, but it is great for swimming and sunbathing. If you want time out of the sun, you can rent an umbrella or cabana. There are also kayak and bicycle rentals available. If you need a beach wheelchair, you can get one of those too.

Sand Key Park includes plenty of fun things to do if you somehow grow bored of the beach. There is a concession stand, a boardwalk, and a nature trail.

The nearby salt marsh is a fantastic place to spot wildlife. Sit on the viewing benches and wait to see herons, roseate spoonbills, anhinga, and more as they feed and nest.

Fort DeSoto

Fort DeSoto Park has some of the best beaches in Florida for history lovers and is also one of the best things to do near St. Petersburg . There are three beaches here spread out on a V-shaped island.

North Beach is the biggest and most popular beach here. The stretch of white sand is perfect for swimming and watching the sunset. Kids will have fun on the pirate ship-themed playground. There is a snack bar, a bathhouse, restrooms, and plenty of shaded picnic tables.

East Beach is much smaller and less crowded, making it perfect for couples seeking time alone. There are picnic pavilions to rest under when the sun gets too hot. This is a good place for wind boarding.

The Dog Park and Beach is the closest to the fort and is a wonderful place to let your four-legged friends play in the water. This beach is also near the fishing pier.

South Beach

Miami’s South Beach is another of the most popular vacation beaches in Florida. This is a lively neighborhood with a fun atmosphere and awesome nightlife. South Beach attracts all sorts of famous and young people who want to have a great time.

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach on the east coast is one of the most famous beaches in Florida and is also one of the closest to Orlando . You cannot go wrong visiting this thrilling beach.

While Daytona Beach is known for its crazy and busy spring break energy, do not let that discourage you from checking it out. The area encompasses about 35 miles of beaches where you can make some great memories with friends or family.

There are so many fun and unique things to do at the beach that there is no way to be bored. The boardwalk and pier are great places to walk, soak up the vibe, and grab a snack.

There are a few great parks right next to the water with cool rides, splash pads, and volleyball courts. The Daytona Lagoon has epic waterslides, a lazy river, bumper cars, laser tag, mini-golf, an arcade, and more!

When you are not at the beach, you can check out Daytona’s other attractions including the famous Daytona International Speedway where the Daytona 500 NASCAR race takes place. You can also visit the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, the Museum of Art and Science, or the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.

Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island is one of the best day trips from Fort Myers. There are a few great beaches here to check out. You really couldn’t ask for better beach destinations in Florida.

Lighthouse Beach is found on the far eastern end of the island and encircles the Sanibel Lighthouse . This historic lighthouse is unique with its red iron design. This beach is a great place to find shells and go for a swim. There is also a fishing pier and a nature trail.

Tarpon Bay Beach on the island’s southern curve is usually not very crowded and is a great place to hang out. Be careful not to disturb turtle nests . There are plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby.

If you want a more secluded beach, head to Bowman’s Beach. This pet-friendly beach features picnic tables, barbecue grills, and a place to launch kayaks and canoes. There are also extensive nature trails.

The last beach on Sanibel is found near the bridge to Captiva Island and even extends onto the other island. Blind Pass Beach, also known as Turner Beach, is one of the best places to find new seashells for your collection. It is also a good place to fish. Swimming, however, is discouraged because of the swift currents.

My 11 Favorite Florida Beaches To Avoid The Crowds

Florida is known for its beaches, and with over 1,300 miles of coastline, there are plenty to pick from. But sometimes, even with all that coastline, it’s hard to find a place for a little quiet day at the beach. Florida has a population of over 22 million people, plus millions of tourists who visit every year. Many of our beaches can get pretty crowded.

In many cases, just finding a place to park near the beach is a chore. And then once you get on the beach, you find that hundreds of other people had the same idea. I don’t like beach crowds and have traveled all over Florida to find the best secluded beach spots. Spring Break and holiday weekends bring out the crowds just about everywhere, but here’s a list of a dozen beaches, and two bonus beaches, where you have a chance at a little sand-dune solitude.

1. Canaveral National Seashore

The Canaveral National Seashore is a 40-mile stretch of undeveloped Atlantic Coast beach that runs from the Kennedy Space Center north to New Smyrna Beach . There’s a northern entrance at New Smyrna Beach and a southern entrance in Titusville. There are only 193 parking spaces at the north end of the park, and 1,100 spaces at the south end. Holiday weekends draw a crowd, and sometimes the parking lots fill up. But for the most part, you can find a little privacy if you walk a short distance from the beach-accessible boardwalks. During the week, chances are you will have the beach almost all to yourself. If you are into beach hikes, the central part of the seashore is undeveloped, with no roads. Hiking into that area gets you totally alone, with just you, the seabirds, and the occasional coyote.

2. Satellite Beach

This beach is located south of Cocoa Beach . There are six parking lots, and generally the two lots on the north end, in South Patrick Shores, draw the smallest crowds. Even on summer weekends, you can usually find a patch of sand to call your own. Along the same stretch of beach is Patrick Space Force Base, with beaches open to the public. Just a note of caution: These beaches are not very wide and a lot of beach disappears during high tide.

3. Bahia Honda State Park

Located on the Florida Keys (Big Pine Key specifically), south of Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge , beach goers at Bahia Honda State Park are mostly campers from the park campgrounds. I’ve been there twice and had the beach pretty much to myself both times. This is a great beach for small children because offshore reefs calm the waves, and the water is shallow for a good distance out from the shore.

State parks in the Keys are usually fully occupied with RV campers in the winter months. Campsites are hard to find. But, you can still pay a fee and enter the parks without a campground reservation. Beaches at all the state parks in the Keys are usually uncrowded, even in the winter.

4. Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is located on the south end of Treasure Island, a beach community at St. Petersburg . It is used mainly by the local residents. The white sand beach is stunningly beautiful and the Gulf of Mexico waters are normally less wavy than beaches on the Atlantic side of the state. While the crowds are small, so is the public parking. There are only two parking lots that fill up fast on the weekends. During the week, you often have the place to yourself.

5. Crandon Park

This is a Miami-Dade park on Key Biscayne , the south end of Miami . There’s lots of parking, and plenty of beach, almost 2 miles of it. I’ve only been there twice, both times during the week, and the beach was deserted. The weekends get busy, but this is a big park with lots of beach for everyone. Sunrise here is a glorious display of red and orange colors framed by the coconut palms that line the beach.

6. St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Located in Port St. Joe, this could be my favorite beach in all of Florida. Its remote location on the Florida panhandle keeps crowds sparse at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park . Sugar white sand and towering sand dunes make for natural beauty. At one point, it was named the best beach in the country by the famed Dr. Beach. The only problem is most of the park, including the campgrounds, remains closed while it is being rebuilt in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in 2018. Only a small section of the beach is open for day use at this time. Park officials are targeting 2023 for reopening the entire park.

7. Gulf Islands National Seashore

Beautiful beaches don’t come any better than the white sands of this national seashore in Gulf Breeze on Florida’s panhandle. Stretching from Pensacola to Navarre, the Gulf Islands National Seashore is more than 26 miles long. There are a couple of access parks with parking and showers. Other than that, it’s just pristine sand and stunningly beautiful blue and turquoise water. People park along the road at random and stake out their own beach front with rarely anyone else in sight.

8. Captiva Island

Located across the causeway from Fort Myers , Sanibel-Captiva is known for its beaches and shelling . Captiva Island is at the end of the island chain and beaches are pretty much used mainly by guests at island hotels. There are three public beaches, with restrooms. Your day at the beach can be a little costly. There is a $9 toll on the causeway for non-locals and parking at the beaches is $5 per hour. 

9. Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island sits off the coast from Bradenton. There are three communities on the island and the least crowded beaches are found at the north end. The beaches on the Gulf of Mexico are wide and white, and I’ve never seen them crowded, even on a holiday weekend. Most beach goers here are local residents or guests at hotels and bed & breakfasts on the island. The problem here is parking. There are no public parking lots by the beach.

10. Sebastian Inlet State Park, Melbourne Beach

Sebastian Inlet State Park at Melbourne Beach is located north of Vero Beach and is divided by a channel from the Atlantic Ocean and a bridge. Of the north and south beaches, the south is the least crowded. There are no restrooms or structures of any kind. Parking is at pull-offs along Highway A1A with no parking lots. I have been here a number of times and have never seen more than a handful of people on the beach. Access to the south beach is free. 

11. Flagler Beach

Located on the Atlantic Coast, north of Daytona Beach, Flagler Beach isn’t all that remote, but few people use the beach here — mainly local residents. You park along the highway and there are plenty of dune crosswalks. The sand isn’t the prettiest, but there’s lots of it. There are restaurants and convenience stores along the road, but no public facilities or restrooms.

Bonus Beaches

It might not be fair to include these two bonus beaches, because they are not readily accessible. But their lack of access makes up for a lack of crowds.

Anclote Key State Park

Anclote Key is a small island offshore from Tarpon Springs, in the Gulf of Mexico. You can only get there by boat or kayak, and the kayak paddle is a long and arduous trip through open water. But once you get to the island, you are usually totally alone. There is a wild beach with lots of birds, and only occasionally will you run into other people.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the least visited parks in the National Park System that’s in the lower 48 states. Located 70 miles southwest of Key West, you only get there by boat or a chartered seaplane. Most people are day trippers who arrive by ferry from Key West. If you are one of the hearty souls who opt to camp out on the island, you will find yourself pretty much alone after the ferry leaves in the afternoon. The beaches are the only part of the attraction here. Visitors spend a lot of time touring historic Fort Jefferson, which was built in the mid-1800s.

Florida’s beaches are right up there with the best beaches in the world. Some get very crowded — like South Beach in Miami, Daytona Beach on the Atlantic Coast, and Clearwater Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. And even those places have smaller crowds on weekdays. You can’t ask for a better base to explore America’s oldest city; The Collector is a flawless example of history meeting luxury.

The Collector has a boutique feel, so it's ideal for a peaceful, intimate stay with historical intrigue and easy access to St. Augustine’s downtown Historic District.

The Collector Luxury Inn spans nine historic buildings from the late 18th century. Today, it sports modern, luxurious touches. When I stayed here, I didn't want to leave the property — and St. Augustine is my second-favorite city in Florida ( after Palm Beach, of course ).

The 30 rooms and suites are differently appointed, adorned with artifacts and antiques, and furnished with coquina walls, fireplaces, and refurbished hardwood floors. The grounds invite you to sit for a spell (with a cocktail from The Well Bar, if you please). Plan time to shoot the breeze with fellow guests at the heated outdoor pool and fire pits.

As enticing and secluded as the property is, one of the best parts of The Collector is its proximity to St. Augustine’s downtown Historic District. The city’s famous cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and historical landmarks are only a short walk away. Whether you’re there for the history, romance, or easy access to St. Augustine's charm, The Collector is undoubtedly one of Florida's best resorts.

There aren’t many places left that capture the essence and ease of Old Florida, but The Gasparilla Inn is one of them.

The Gasparilla Inn operates seasonally (early October to mid-July) and has a loyal clientele, so there is limited availability during peak periods, especially holidays and weekends. Occasionally, there's a dress code.

Although there’s plenty to do on-property, most guests choose this resort for its proximity to Florida’s famous theme parks; this is the next best thing to spending the night inside Cinderella Castle. Four Seasons Resort Orlando has a Disney Planning Center in the lobby, complimentary transportation to the parks via a luxury motor coach, and an on-site character breakfast on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Even better, guests get daily 30-minute-early access to any park.

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa

Little Palm Island is the only private island resort in the U.S. It's accessible only via private boat or seaplane, so it feels like an alternate (extravagant) reality.

During high season (January to June), a three-night deposit is due at the time of booking, with the balance remainder due 30 days before arrival.

If the Florida Keys are an escape, Little Palm Island off the coast of Little Torch Key is the escape within the escape. The four-acre island is exclusive and secluded yet still sports the modern conveniences of a top-tier resort, including dining, a full-service spa, and activities that immerse guests in the Keys’ natural beauty (think kayaking, backcountry flats fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, and eco-tours). There’s little wonder why T+L readers named it the No. 1 favorite resort in Florida in the 2023 World’s Best Awards .

“Little Palm Island feels so far removed from the real world, in a good way, that it’s hard to believe it’s one of the Florida Keys,” Nikolopoulos says. “The private island is tiny in size but huge on romance, with its thatched-roofed bungalows with private beaches, terraces with copper tubs overlooking the water, and major castaway feels. Plus, who doesn’t love the adorable Key deer that peek at you through the mangroves?”

Membership to the Boca Raton Club is available, so the people you’ll meet on the property are a mix of hotel guests and affluent locals.

Composed of five hotels within one larger resort, The Boca Raton has something for everyone. All of its offerings are upscale, including the adults-only Yacht Club and the Tower, near Harborside Pool Club, which is best for groups and families. “I’ve seen many iterations of this storied hotel over the years, but the most recent renovation feels like the right blend of history and freshness,” Nikolopoulos says. “I love the sprawling view of the sea and city from the new Tower suites, but I also enjoy the proximity to the water from the Yacht Club, which feels so elevated and exclusive."

Dinner forces you to make tough decisions: “There are 16 dining concepts to choose from," she says. "Still, nothing beats the fun of staying in and having the robot butler deliver snacks and games.” Yes, there’s a robot butler, and it even tells jokes.

You can find a beautiful beach, eight pools — including a 450-foot lazy river and waterslides — a fitness center, shopping, an extensive Racquet Club (there are 16 Hydro-Grid courts for tennis and six for pickleball, plus a full-service tennis concierge and expert instruction available), and a championship-level private golf course on the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. And if you don’t spend time at Spa Palmera — the resort’s award-winning, 50,000-square-foot, Alhambra Palace-inspired spa — did you really go to The Boca Raton?

Who can resist a historic waterfront resort in a splashy shade of pink?

The Vinoy is located in downtown St. Petersburg, not in St. Pete Beach, so there is no direct beach access. But there is a stunning pool with cabana rentals.

The Vinoy is no stranger to making headlines, from its New Year’s Eve debut in 1925 to recent headlines following a significant refresh and rebrand. After all, this pink and cheery hotel is designed to stand out. But this historic resort is also versed in discretion; it hosts celebrities, athletes, American presidents, and some of the world’s most well-traveled guests.

This hotel offers equal parts historic charm and modern luxury. Given its prime downtown St. Petersburg location, you’ll find a mix of locals and hotel guests on the front porch rocking chairs, shopping at the Sunni Spencer boutique, and dining and drinking at the hotel’s five venues. The Colony Palm Beach

The Colony and its distinctive pink facade epitomizes picture-perfect, Instagrammable, youthful, and vibrant Palm Beach.

Locals (like me!) flock to The Colony’s weekly events. Think live music on the weekends, Sunday-night bingo, and Monday-night trivia, plus a rotating roster of pop-ups, trunk shows, and artists-in-residence.

With deep Palm Beach roots dating to 1947 plus a commitment to constant revitalization, The Colony has seen many evolutions, and the current iteration is its best yet.

From whimsical hand-painted wallpaper in the Living Room to the exquisitely designed bungalows, penthouses, and residential-style villas (all created in collaboration with local tastemakers or internationally renowned designers, sometimes both), the hotel has so many details that you could spend a few hours just taking them all in.

Sunset Key Cottages

To unwind after living it up in the Conch Republic, you can combine a mainland Key West visit with a few days of R&R at Sunset Key Cottages.

The resort offers an “accessibly remote” experience, setting you apart from Key West but still close. You take a boat to the island that leaves Opal Key at the 15- and 45-minute mark of every hour from 6:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. and leaves Sunset Key’s dock on the hour and half-hour (after 11 p.m., the boat runs by request).

Located a seven-minute boat ride from sibling property Opal Key on the mainland, Sunset Key Cottages is a 27-acre resort consisting of 40 private cottages, a spa, and two dining destinations (a poolside tiki bar and a beachfront dining outpost) on a private island about 500 yards off Key West's western edge.

Away from it all and simultaneously in the middle of everything, the resort has been appointed by T+L readers to the World’s Best Awards for multiple years and included in T+L’s Top 500 Hotels.

As Nikolopoulos puts it, “This private island resort a stone’s throw from Key West feels like vacationing in small-town America, the kind of sweet place where you can let kids run outside all day (you might see them when the ice cream truck comes around).” Nikolopoulos's favorite part of the day is dinner on the beach at Latitudes with a mesmerizing sunset.

There is deliciously little to do aside from relax and enjoy, although the resort does have a spa, pool, beach ( a rarity in the Keys ), tennis courts, beach volleyball, fitness classes, and weekend family programming.

Eau Palm Beach

Eau Palm Beach's 42,000-square-foot spa is the best in the area (in my humble opinion). There are playful touches like a Wishing Well at the entrance (where you can pause and set an intention), dipping pools, hanging chairs in the sun-dappled garden, and mini cupcakes that are impossible to resist (don't resist).

You can’t beat the oceanfront location, but the hotel is slightly removed from the bustling heart of Palm Beach, so this is a quieter option away from the town's hubbub.

Eau Palm Beach feels “effortlessly” chic, though it’s evident that a lot of care and intention went into making this hotel as fabulous as it is. While Mother Nature was in charge of the sparkling Atlantic lining the east side of the hotel (an undeniable part of the hotel’s appeal), the cheery guest rooms, designed by renowned designer Jonathan Adler, are a destination in their own right.

Families and couples are drawn to resort perks like private beach access, children’s programming, eight onsite dining outlets, and complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, bicycle rentals, and non-motorized water sports equipment.

You may even find me there. Eau Palm Beach has my favorite spa in the area — somebody’s got to work the knots out of these keyboard-hunched shoulders.

Know Before You Go

• Florida is a seasonal destination. The association between Florida and summer vacation is strong, and for good reason, but in many parts of Florida, peak season is during the cooler winter months. Despite the heat, any place with a beach or theme park is fair game during the summer, and spring break draws crowds everywhere. Resort rates can fluctuate dramatically between on and off season, but I firmly believe there’s no wrong time to visit Florida .
• Make way for hurricanes. On the topic of seasons, don’t neglect to consider the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 every year. A storm may or may not form, but book with flexible cancellation policies and be prepared for potential rain during these months.
• The sun sets in the west. It works the same way in Florida. You’d be surprised how many people stay in oceanfront hotels on the East Coast, expecting a stunning sunset over the water, only to be disappointed when they realize they’ll have to awake at sunrise for such a scene.
• Not all resorts are family-friendly. Some spots are suited for a romantic getaway sans children (Little Palm Island), while others are built for the whole family (The Breakers). Check for solid kids programming if you plan to bring yours.

Corolla Beach: Outer Banks, North Carolina

Assateague Beach: Assateague Island, Maryland

A bastion of serenity, Assateague Beach is hidden away on Assateague Island, a sleepy 37-mile-long barrier island and protected nature sanctuary. Unlike some of the more touristy seaside spots in Virginia Beach, Sandbridge Beach’s relatively secluded location keeps the vibe much calmer.

“The coastal marshes and maritime forests allow visitors to spot the local flora and fauna—including shorebirds, dolphins, and loggerhead sea turtles, as well as gulls, terns, and sandpipers—with ease,” says Quinn.

Crane Beach: Ipswich, Massachusetts

One of New England's most cherished destinations for summertime family fun, Crane Beach supplies far more than just sun and sand. Tucked within a 1,234-acre conservation and recreation area, the four-mile-long beach is ensconced by dunes, pine forests, and the Atlantic Ocean, so it’s a great spot to explore picturesque scenery.

Travelers Hop to Warmer Destinations for Easter

Easter travelers are hopping on cruise ships and heading to beaches to celebrate spring. AAA Travel data shows a 28% increase in cruise bookings for March and April compared to last year, and a 60% increase for cruises departing from South Florida. With Easter arriving early this year, many travelers are looking to escape to warmer temperatures. And for many, an Easter vacation is a family tradition.

“Multigenerational travel is a growing trend, especially at Easter time,” said Brian Murray, Sr. Manager of Travel at AAA Western and Central New York. “We’re seeing many families taking vacations with grandma, grandpa, and the entire family. At the same time, international travel is soaring with people looking to see the world. This year, travelers are splurging on upgrades and once in a lifetime trips.”

Murray cited AAA data for March and April, which shows international flight bookings are up 20% and international hotel bookings are up 37%.

Here’s a look at the top ten destinations for local travelers this Easter based on AAA Western and Central New York bookings from 3/28 to 4/1: 

• Punta Cana 
• Cruising out of Florida
• Montego Bay
• Turks and Caicos
• Road trips are also popular this week while families take advantage of Easter break from area schools. For those traveling by car, AAA Western and Central New York’s Route Production Department, which handles maps and TripTik requests, reports a 30% increase in requests. The top destinations for local road trippers are:
• Florida – it’s always number one! This year, there’s an uptick in requests for the panhandle of Florida.
• Myrtle Beach, SC
• Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee
• Smokey Mountain National Park in Tennessee – drivers are specifically asking for maps along Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which goes from Virginia to the Smokey Mountains. 
• New Orleans
• Hilton Head, SC

Note: there will be local road trips across the state as well, to places like Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, the Thousand Islands, and New York City.
