Where to travel for a 2-for-1 trip

By Carnival Cruise Line

These nearby destinations let you see even more on one vacation!

Going on vacation is always a treat: time away from work, new experiences, new sights, delicious food, and fun. How could it get any better than that? What about a “2-for-1 travel deal”? Neighboring destinations can really expand your fun!

If you’ve got time to treat yourself to a little longer vacation, here are some of the best spots where you can double down:

Boats in a harbor in Portland Maine

Canada & New England

Sharing a similar coastline, New England and Canada make for an excellent 2-for-1 trip—especially if you’re traveling by sea! Make your way up the eastern seaboard and you’ll find all sorts of can’t-miss attractions !

Starting off in Boston lets you appreciate bustling city life. Catch major attractions like the New England Aquarium and Museum of Science, or a baseball game at Fenway Park just 2 miles from downtown. And as one of the oldest American cities, Boston is home to “ancient” attractions like the Old Statehouse building that survived the revolution.

Head North to Portland Maine and you’ll find a port with a renowned food scene that punches well above its weight. As an emerging food city , there’s more to enjoy than fresh lobster—but don’t leave without trying a lobster roll!—like specialized breweries, oysters, donuts, and even excellent Vietnamese cuisine.

Visitors exploring the hopewell rock formations in Canada

When you reach our northern neighbor, there’s plenty more to see. Near Halifax Nova Scotia , the famous Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is a picturesque stop on a rocky peninsula. The massive Bay of Fundy also boasts incredible formations of the Hopewell Rocks. And in St. John , you can see the churning waters of the “reversing falls” before strolling past colorful waterfront homes on your way to seafood and delicious international fare along the harbor.

The Sydney Opera House and skyline at night

Australia & New Zealand

On the other side of the world, making the trek to Australia is worth a spot on your bucket list , especially because it’s near New Zealand!

One of the best-known attractions in the Land Down Under is the Australian national animal : Kangaroos. But there are other wild animals you’ll have to see there, like the cute koala, the famously odd duck billed platypus, and the ferocious predators Australian crocodiles.

There are endless opportunities for exploration near Cairns , the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef which spans more than 134,000 square miles with colorful corals and vibrant fish species. And surfers will find plenty to love about Australia’s coastline, but especially at “Surfer’s Paradise” beach south of Brisbane .

Panoramic view of Auckland, New Zealand from across the water

But just across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand is home to one of the best places to travel in 2022 : Auckland .  Since the city is between two harbors, it’s no surprise ferries can take you to top attractions like the lava caves on Rangitoto Island. And like Australia, New Zealand has a thriving wine industry. Be sure to sample some local pinot noirs in town after taking in panoramic views from the iconic Sky Tower.

A view of the the Palace of Westminster and Elizabeth Tower in London, England.

British isles

What’s better than a 2-for-1 vacation? How about a 5-for-1!

If you’re headed to the British Isles , you can see England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—all under the same head of state—as well as their neighbor Ireland on the same trip. Or whichever calls to you most. The history and culture of these places converge, but each has their own unique draws.

A stone pub in Dublin, Ireland with an Irish flag and flowers

In Dublin, Ireland for example you can visit the famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral named after the country’s most famous saint, or the Guinness Brewery where you can learn to pour a pint from the experts.

Neighboring Northern Ireland is a separate country (and part of the United Kingdom). There’s plenty of history in the capital of Belfast , such as the Titanic Museum, but the Giant’s Causeway is truly a unique sight: thousands of interlocking columns reach into the North Channel towards Scotland.

Castle overlooking the city of Edinburgh.

And speaking of, Edinburgh Scotland is a must-stop to see castles. In town, Edinburgh Castle sits high on a rock and can be seen from miles, and another called Stirling Castle sits on an extinct volcano!

Dusk in Snowdonia National Park in Wales

Wales has Snowdonia National Park, that’s unique not just for its rare beauty, but since it covers more than 10% of the country!

And last but not least, London, England is home to some of the world’s most famous architecture, like Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth Tower (which houses the bell named “Big Ben”) and the seat of government in the Palace of Westminster.

2 For 1 Luxury Cruise Deals

Travel Agencies & Bureaus

Looking for 2 For 1 Luxury Cruise Deals? Cruise lines are going all out to attract new customers, and one of their newest and most effective strategies is 2 for 1 luxury cruise deals.  Offering steep discounts and 2 for 1 rates is a calculated gamble on the part of the cruise industry as it reacts to a slow economy by enticing vacationers with deals that appear too good to be true. While such deals might scare off many, there is no reason to be shay of these great cruise offers.  The cruise lines offer these deals knowing that they can expect a high rate of return clients. Cruises might well be the best of all vacation options.  The cruise industry will tell you that the proof is in the massive amount of return customers.  Staggering numbers of cruise customers return for another vacation in less than 12 months.  Because of these numbers, cruise lines feel comfortable offering such amazing discounts to get vacationers on board for the first time. Luxury cruise 2 for 1 deals are relatively new and came from the astounding success that discount cruise lines have had with similar deals.  These luxury cruise 2 for 1 deals also let cruise lines sell off the last few tickets for some of their cruises, ensuring maximum ridership.  Knowing that half of those tickets will likely go unsold anyway, the cruise operators realized that they could give away those unsold tickets in 2 for 1 luxury cruise deals and attract vacationers that might not otherwise have considered taking a cruise. The results have been sensational, and now these two for one cruise deals are the most popular luxury cruise deals being offered.  With their increased popularity, finding them is easy.  Almost all luxury cruise lines are now offering these two for one cruise deals to sell unsold tickets and attract new customers.  A simple internet search will reveal dozens of these deals, most of which need to be booked very quickly. The secret to these deals is being able to wait for the last minute.  If the destination doesn't matter, and if you have no preference for any particular cruise line, then you are going to find some great deals for cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean.  Just be prepared to pack your bags quickly, as you often only have days to get on board and start your vacation. One huge advantage for these luxury cruise deals is that they are constantly changing.  If you cannot find a cruise that interests you today, then there might be one tomorrow.  These 2 for 1 deals change daily, so be ready to make searching for them a habit.  Many people like to tediously plan their vacations to cram in the most enjoyment they can in less time and for less money.  These 2 for 1 deals require some planning flexibility, but can offer even more enjoyment for even less money.  About a week before the start of your vacation, begin searching on line for cruises that appeal to you.  Be ready to pounce immediately, because these offers are attractive and are scooped up very quickly. The key to taking advantage of 2 for 1 luxury cruise deals is being willing to take what comes to you.  These deals appeal to the adventurous types who just like to explore new places and enjoy new things.  With deals like this, you can never know what will be available until that very day.  The cruise lines are having a great deal of success with these offers, so it is safe to expect that they will be available for a long time to come

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

  • I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.
  • I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
  • My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.

Insider Today

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

my 2 for 1 cruises

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

my 2 for 1 cruises

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

my 2 for 1 cruises

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

my 2 for 1 cruises

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

my 2 for 1 cruises

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

my 2 for 1 cruises

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.

2 for 1 Fares?

Looking to try Regent and don't quite understand the

  • 2-FOR-1 All-Inclusive Fares

listed on the website

What exactly does that mean?

If the site shows a $6400 fare, is that the total for 2 people or, like other sites, would the total be $12,800?

The terminology is a marketing gimmick.  The rack rate is $12,800 per person, discounted to $6,400 per person.

Haha

Thanks, typical hype...Inflate the original price so you can "discount" it to the price you actually want to get!

You're also not going to believe all the "free" stuff you get for $12,800.  All these cruise lines overhype IMO.  Hope your first Regent cruise is as pleasurable as ours was.

Like

FWIW, before our first Regent cruise way back in '09 I did the same thing - looked at the fares and was like, "This has to be for two people - it can't be one bunk" - but it was.

On our third day on board we had already met with the cruise consultant to book our next cruise.  Once you're on board it's really easy to justify the spend...

For years I've wanted Regent to change that to 'Included' instead of 'Free'.  More accurate, and doesn't seem as tacky, IMO.

SandJCruiser

Several years ago were on a Tauck river cruise, which are all-inclusive.  Over cocktails one evening with some new friends, one of the ladies commented, "I really like that the drinks are free.". Her husband looked at her and dryly remarked, " They're not free; they're pre-paid. " 😁 Pretty much sums it up.

My wife does the eye roll when she hears "free".  I will say that Regent is truly "all inclusive", the spa & upgraded wines(liquors) and excursions are the only things that are  additional.  The OBC usually covers those.  When we've left the ship we've never owed a nickel, nice touch.  Shops & the Casino are also extra of course.

And, actually, most of the excursions are included. Depending on the port and the operator(s), I've often found the included ones to be as good as or better than the ones you pay extra for.

Definitely a distinction.  But something very easy to get used to...on other cruises, even if you purchase a package you still need to swipe or sign...I much prefer the Regent business model of just getting what you want...regardless of whether it's pre-paid or not.  🙂

I've often told people that you can definitely spend a few weeks on board a Regent ship and not pay a penny past what you've already paid.  Granted, some bumps make it better, like better wine and some upgraded excursions...but those are optional and not necessary to have a great vacation, IMO.

I will say we haven't seen this often, but we have seen it.  We always let DS know (politely, of course) when we're unhappy with an excursion, especially one we paid extra for, but fortunately that's not a common thing.

We've had very good success with the included excursions.  Mentioned in another thread wish we took a private tour to Kyoto, got shut out of a pay extra Bordeaux excursion to a top chateau with lunch that we would have liked to do.   Other than that great experiences.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

Royal Caribbean to pay $1.3 million in refunds over canceled Capital Jazz Cruises

Royal Caribbean Cruise

BALTIMORE — It's been more than three years since the Capital Jazz SuperCruise was set to sail.

Then COVID-19 hit, causing the trip to be postponed until January 14, 2022.

Paid customers had the option of getting a refund or cruising on the new date.

While many chose reimbursement, others decided to just wait and travel the following year.

However, those plans ended up being canceled as well due to the Omicron variant.

As result many received no money back for their tickets.

MORE: Cruise customers still seeking refunds after trip was canceled in January

Royal Caribbean Cruises reportedly helped with ticket sales on behalf of Capital Jazz, which is based out of Maryland.

According to the State Attorney General's Office, this left the cruise giant financially responsible.

Royal Caribbean denied those claims insisting they never directly received traveler payments.

They instead placed blame on Capital Jazz, suggesting they're responsible for issuing refunds.

This led to the Attorney General's Office launching an investigation into Royal Caribbean.

The investigation concluded Royal Caribbean engaged in unfair and deceptive practices, in violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

On Wednesday, without having to admit liability or guilt, Royal Caribbean agreed to a settlement that includes $1.3 million in refunds to impacted customers.

“Consumers deserve a refund when a business fails to deliver, even in unforeseen circumstances like the pandemic,” said Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown.

Those still owed a refund should expect a mailed check within three months.

A group of cruise ship passengers were stranded on an African island. What happened?

A n American couple who endured traveling through seven countries in 48 hours to catch up to a cruise ship that left them at a previous port said they may not re-board the boat.

A 21-day dream cruise along the coast of Africa turned into an international ordeal for couple Jill and Jay Campbell and a group of six other passengers after they said they were left behind during a tour stop on an African island.

What happened to the cruise ship passengers?

Six Americans and two Australians were on a privately-run excursion on the island of Sao Tome on March 30 and were supposed to be back by 3 p.m. local time, according to the couple.

When they didn't make it back in time due to what they said were issues with the tour, their Norwegian Cruise Line ship left without them.

The Campbells told NBC News their tour operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late rejoining the ship, but the vessel left anyway. They added that the island's coast guard tried to get them and several others to the cruise ship, but they said they weren't allowed to board.

The couple then had to make their way from Sao Tome to Senegal, where the cruise ship was docked on April 2.

“It’s one of those, ‘You can’t get there from here,’” Jay Campbell said on TODAY on April 2. “I think we flew through six countries just to get to Gambia yesterday.”

When will the passengers return home?

The couple traveled through seven countries in a 48-hour period to reach Senegal, according to Jill Campbell.

Following that ordeal, they said they aren’t sure if they’re going to board the ship again to rejoin the cruise.

“After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly,” Jill Campbell said.

“I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and the well-being of the customers should be their first priority, and that should be placed first," she said.

“We believe there was a basic duty of care that they’ve forgotten about so it does concern us.”

What has Norwegian cruises said?

Norwegian Cruise Line told NBC News in a statement that the Campbells’ situation was unfortunate, saying “guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time” and noting the group was on a privately-run tour.

The Campbells were thankful for the people of Sao Tome as they tried to navigate how they were going to catch up to the ship.

"It’s a very difficult process," Jay Campbell said. "You’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers.

"You’re dealing with different currencies, currency exchanges, finding someone that even has dollars, taking dollars, the minimum amount that we had, trying to convert them to local currency, (and) trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to."
